03:56 AM pere: hi
04:41 AM Tom_L: morning
04:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:22 AM mrec: is anyone using PSNG with linuxcnc?
06:29 AM mrec: I'm not sure what this thing is doing but it's totally wrong when I want to get the center of a 10cm object
06:34 AM mrec: the sourcecode is so clear but the machine is obviously not doing that :-)
06:34 AM mrec: well time to debug more...

05:13 PM roycroft: if the linkages is misadjusted you may not be able to engage the clutch release all the way
05:14 PM roycroft: so it could be that as well as the synchro ring
05:14 PM JT-Shop2: I've been working on getting my dev PC back up to snuff
05:14 PM Tom_L: what os version?
05:14 PM * roycroft has no elections work to do for the first time since july
05:14 PM JT-Shop2: clutch release?
05:14 PM JT-Shop2: Tom_L, me?
05:15 PM roycroft: the thing that happens when you push the clutch pedal in
05:15 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:15 PM roycroft: you release the clutch
05:15 PM JT-Shop2: d13
05:15 PM JT-Shop2: nothing else worked with my video card and monitor
05:15 PM Tom_L: right
05:16 PM JT-Shop2: clutch is hydraulic and works fine
05:16 PM roycroft: so it's the shift linkage you're talking about?
05:16 PM JT-Shop2: yes
05:16 PM roycroft: oh, ok
05:16 PM roycroft: then never mind :)
05:17 PM JT-Shop2: the transmission is bolted to the rear end and the clutch is bolted to the motor
05:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: who knows how well the car was treated before JT got it
05:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: might have been a crappy synchro when it went it at the factory, just wore early
05:23 PM roycroft: today would be a good day to make my new scroll saw mobile, i think
05:23 PM Tom_L: it just seemed easier to check the linkage first
05:24 PM roycroft: and i may already have a set of casters for it
05:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've broken plenty of synchros
05:24 PM roycroft: i might even get a bit of cad work done tonight
05:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and yeah check the linkage for proper travel
05:24 PM * Tom_L reminds himself to not let CaptHindsight[m] drive his vehicles
05:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you don't always have to use the clutch to shift between gears
05:25 PM Tom_L: how well i know
05:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: thats what synchros are for
05:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and it's not my fault if the synchros take too long to lock up
05:26 PM roycroft: i was driving from eugene to medford once, about a 3 hour drive, and part of the clutch linkage disconnected in my pickup
05:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they weren't designed tough enough
05:26 PM roycroft: '75 chevy with a muncie 4 speed
05:26 PM roycroft: i had to finish the drive down there without a clutch
05:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the "rock crusher"
05:26 PM roycroft: i found a big empty parking lot to park in, so i could be sure to have an unobstructed path in front of me to start the truck with the granny gear engaged
05:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah I've had to drive over an hour in traffic with no clutch
05:27 PM roycroft: but i did manage to finish my job down there and drive back home safely
05:27 PM roycroft: the only really scary part was when i got back to eugene and hit traffic
05:27 PM roycroft: there are three mountain passes between here and medford
05:27 PM roycroft: they are baby mountain passes in elevation, but they are stil 6% grade for an extended distance
05:28 PM roycroft: so that made for a fun drive
05:28 PM roycroft: the granny gear is not synchronized in a muncie 4 speed
05:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: had a good battery and starter so even if I came to dead stop I could restart the engine in 1st
05:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: diesel Jetta
05:29 PM roycroft: that's what i had to do
05:29 PM roycroft: and fortunately i had two fuel tanks on the pickup, and had topped them both off when i left
05:29 PM roycroft: so no stops for fuel
05:29 PM roycroft: no fuel gauge on the second tank, though
05:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I think I went through 3 clutch cables in that car but had near 300K miles when the timing belt went
05:30 PM roycroft: my usual method was to fill them both, drive on the second tank until it was empty, then switch over to the first tank which had a gauge
05:30 PM roycroft: not a diesel, obviously
05:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: cable broke on the expressway in traffic
05:31 PM roycroft: that's a word i haven't seen nor heard in a long time
05:31 PM XXCoder: my worse experence was on mecury sable 1988. chair broke when i was going 60 mph. I was looking at my car ceiling at 60 mph
05:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: IDOT tow truck gave me a push to get started the first time
05:32 PM XXCoder: I barely could pull back up using steering wheel (without turning it!) and still stayed in line
05:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 2 babies in the car as well, thinking about that now they probably would not have pushed me
05:32 PM roycroft: that doesn't sound like a fun time, xxcoder
05:32 PM XXCoder: had to constantly hold into steering wheel till I got home. I had to replace chair
05:32 PM XXCoder: roy no crap lol
05:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: a seat with no back is no fun, or exciting depending on your pserspective
05:33 PM XXCoder: after that it was quite reliable car for nearly 10 more years
05:33 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight[m]: it wasnt back that broke
05:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: did you weld it in place?
05:34 PM XXCoder: it was whole chair. it disconnected and entire chair flipped back
05:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is was the bolts through the floorpan?
05:34 PM XXCoder: nah I got chair from its sister car ford from junkyard
05:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even more fun
05:34 PM XXCoder: nah chair bolt tabs broke off. it was former known recall apparently
05:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 🤣
05:35 PM XXCoder: my car was low mileage for such a old car
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: almost as fun as a car with no brakes
05:36 PM roycroft: i'm not a ford fan
05:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: move it around the parking lot using just Drive and Reverse
05:36 PM roycroft: i've owned two
05:36 PM roycroft: oh, three
05:36 PM roycroft: the first was a '52 pickup, with a flattop six
05:36 PM XXCoder: lol that same car had "too much brakes" at one time. turns out old lady never went to check up on car. so it was negative 50% and negative 100% life on disc and drum
05:36 PM roycroft: that as a nice vehicle
05:36 PM roycroft: wait, that was my second one
05:37 PM roycroft: my first ford was a '73 pinto
05:37 PM roycroft: all i can say about that car is that i survived it
05:37 PM roycroft: then i had the pickup
05:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my only Fords were two Mustangs, 69 and 72
05:37 PM roycroft: and i owned an '80s mustang for a while
05:37 PM XXCoder: other problems was water pump was VERY dead, new belt. thats it. besides oil it was only fixes I ever did in years of driving
05:37 PM roycroft: i've owned more volkswagens than anything else
05:37 PM roycroft: followed by chevys, and then toyotas
05:37 PM XXCoder: only ford I ever owned is ford focus 2012
05:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I wouldn't mind a Diesel VW again
05:39 PM XXCoder: I would love to have converted vw beetle to ev
05:44 PM JT-Shop2: I had a 65 and 66 mustang, dad bought the 65 on his credit card for $200
05:44 PM JT-Shop2: 200 straight six with floor shifter and bench seat pretty rare
05:46 PM JT-Shop2: the 66 caught a trailer hitch on the passenger side from headlight to tail light and the drivers side got a hit and run at night got it for $250
05:47 PM JT-Shop2: replaced both fenders and doors and the quarter panel
05:47 PM XXCoder: my mecury was pretty rare big engine v6
05:47 PM XXCoder: it could easily overtake honda with dumb huge extust hose in back
05:47 PM Loetmichel: man, when i read that my mouth waters.
05:47 PM JT-Shop2: contact cement was used to put brown naugahyde on the metal parts of the back seat
05:48 PM Loetmichel: <- wants to have a '69 F100 or F150... not aviable in germany. not even as a bucket of rust with a vin for five figures.
05:48 PM XXCoder: 3.0L v6 is common model. mine was 3.8L
05:48 PM XXCoder: it barely could fit in bay lol
05:49 PM XXCoder: man I miss it. if it wasnt totaled I would be still driving it now
05:49 PM XXCoder: well maybe not because it sure drank gas
05:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Loetmichel: 6-8 L engines in 1400Kg cars were pretty common back then here
05:50 PM Loetmichel: well, what did you expect from a large displacement natural aspirated gas engine without any optimisations we made in the last six decades?
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but only 250-350 HP from the factory
05:51 PM Loetmichel: CaptainHindsight: I know. and i know the gas guzzling. doesent mean they arent pretty to my eye (or me caring about the fuel costs.)
05:52 PM XXCoder: similiar to this https://mercury.bid.cars/0-32067048/1993-Mercury-Sable-1MELM5048PA667919-10.jpg lol
05:52 PM XXCoder: you can see frankly how giant it is. barely 1-2 inch on left side.
05:52 PM XXCoder: front and back similiar
05:53 PM XXCoder: its actually 1993 though it looks basically exactly same as my 1988 was
05:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ~425 HP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYA0RQt1aP8
05:53 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: still looks better than my Merc A160 (a-class) engine bay. sent it to the shop to have them change the ignition coils because i couldnt be bothered to break three new joints in my arms just to get to the spark plugs on that /$&%$%&/ car.
05:53 PM XXCoder: LOL
05:54 PM XXCoder: loet I did change spark plugs myself but wished I didnt
05:54 PM XXCoder: but I had no money at all that time
05:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: look at the gas prices in 2015 :)
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh wow that was in Finland
05:57 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: back in my youth i would have done it myself. But lets be honest: at 53 i am a lot less flexible AND earn enough money that the ~320 eur I paid for that job were worth the "no hassle" thing.
05:57 PM XXCoder: lol yeah. I was hmm late 30s then
05:57 PM XXCoder: no job at that time
05:58 PM Loetmichel: That doesent mean that that 45° tilted forward sideways mounted engine is any more fun to work at
05:58 PM XXCoder: if I still had car couple years later id have just sent it into shop
05:58 PM Loetmichel: you have about 50mm between radiator and valve cover.
05:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Loetmichel: they were fun but not very reliable
05:59 PM JT-Shop2: if it's not the shift linkage then I have to do the work because no one around here works on manual transmissions much less a corvette
06:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you can drop the trans then you could send it out for a rebuild
06:00 PM JT-Shop2: I bought a set of plugs for my uplander sideways v6 and took the plugs and the van to the shop and let them do it
06:00 PM JT-Shop2: if I got it out I'll replace the worn parts
06:00 PM JT-Shop2: no one does manual transmissions here
06:01 PM XXCoder: Loetmichel: whats sad is that after all that work on spark plugs, car was totaled 3 months later
06:01 PM XXCoder: it drove like new
06:01 PM JT-Shop2: that sucks
06:01 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:02 PM XXCoder: someone did a left turn without looking, and escaped
06:02 PM JT-Shop2: ouch
06:02 PM JT-Shop2: hit and run?
06:02 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:03 PM JT-Shop2: I got arrested for hit and run on the new orleans bridge but there was not a scratch on my car so the state police let me go
06:03 PM JT-Shop2: the bridge police were the lowest of all the cops in new orleans
06:03 PM XXCoder: ah yes forgot ither ford I owned, ford contour. dont buy one since they ALL have tranmission problems. its why theyre so rare now
06:04 PM XXCoder: weird. so they blamed you for someone else or what
06:05 PM JT-Shop2: on my `80 Custom Deluxe C10 pickup I used to rebuild the transmission often, I had so many parts I scatter them on the floor and pick the best ones to put it back together
06:05 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: probably similar car and lazy cops
06:05 PM JT-Shop2: I went through 3 engines on that truck and one frame
06:05 PM XXCoder: jt geez
06:06 PM XXCoder: my contour tranmission was just great (surpise!) but it had so many problems
06:06 PM XXCoder: like if its hot day and I drive for 40 minutes, it doesnt have any coolant
06:06 PM XXCoder: but if cold day coolant dont leak. period
06:06 PM XXCoder: never solved that as I decided to get nissian van to replace that
06:06 PM JT-Shop2: usually I had a 3 speed cast iron tranny in the truck but once I found an aluminum muncie 4 speed and had that in for a while
06:08 PM XXCoder: jt lol I always had 2-3 bottles of water in car in case it vaporizes its coolant
06:08 PM * JT-Shop2 calls it a day
06:08 PM Loetmichel: JT-Shop: i lately drove a new merc sprinter... was surprised how agile that truck was. then i found the sixth gear ;)
06:09 PM XXCoder: once took wrong bottle and tried to drink it. it had traces of coolant. got me so sick and almost stopped my water drinking for a while
06:09 PM JT-Shop2: my buddy had a corvair that leaked so much oil he kept 2 gallons of recycled oil in the car at all times
06:09 PM XXCoder: still dont know why its perfectly sealed and boom no water if in summer
06:09 PM JT-Shop2: my ridgeline has a 9 speed transmission
06:10 PM JT-Shop2: weird for sure
06:10 PM JT-Shop2: anyway see you guys later
06:10 PM XXCoder: happens even if I mix in proper coolant stuff. after wasting gallons of that I just started using pure water in summers
06:10 PM XXCoder: have good night
06:11 PM Loetmichel: but i have to say that its pretty dicey to drive a 3.5 ton box car at 180kph... especially empty
06:11 PM XXCoder: I mixed in coolant when it didnt look like it would dump coolant for rest of year
06:11 PM XXCoder: loet lol
06:11 PM Loetmichel: what? thats perfectly legal here!
06:12 PM Loetmichel: :D
06:12 PM XXCoder: 111 mph for us imperial rebels
06:12 PM XXCoder: way too fast
06:12 PM Loetmichel: those sprinters arent called that for nothing
06:13 PM XXCoder: lol
06:14 PM XXCoder: generally from I understand your highways and freeways is better designed than usa ones anyway
06:14 PM Loetmichel: yep, they sure are
06:14 PM XXCoder: here its impossible to drive at 111 mph for most of it, assiming cops miss it
06:14 PM XXCoder: way too twisty (mountainous and hilly here)
06:14 PM XXCoder: flatter states certainly can
06:14 PM Loetmichel: doesent help in a car thats about the size of a short bus but less than a quarter of the weight
06:15 PM Loetmichel: a bit of side winds and you do a funny dance
06:16 PM Loetmichel: but yeah, german highways (a.k.a autobahn) are usually designed to be driven with 250kph++ cars in mind.
06:16 PM Loetmichel: at least the parts with the (////) sign (no speed limit from here on)
06:16 PM XXCoder: pretty cool, but I dont think I will drive there lol
06:18 PM Loetmichel: well, i drive ~1000km every two weeks to my wifes new house. fun fact: even an a-class can do 200kph ;)
06:18 PM Loetmichel: (it starts getting thirsty at about 160kph though)
06:21 PM Tom_L: put nos on it
06:22 PM XXCoder: or over 1k km ev range car lol
06:34 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: EV car?
06:35 PM XXCoder: yeah was mostly kidding, not many 1000 km ev cars out there
06:35 PM XXCoder: basically it wont be thristy since it dont have gas ;)
06:35 PM Loetmichel: its a 100hp petrol A-class. no EV
06:36 PM XXCoder: I know im not talking about that vehicle :)
06:36 PM Loetmichel: and i BARELY make it to my wife and back with a full 55 liters tank of E10
06:36 PM XXCoder: sounds like you need to get another vehicle for long transits
06:37 PM Loetmichel: well, i bought it to have 4 wheels after my BMW convertible spit out a piston sideways (AGAIN!)
06:37 PM Loetmichel: its NOT my dream car
06:37 PM Loetmichel: it just was aviable
06:37 PM XXCoder: ouch
06:38 PM Loetmichel: thats the SECOND BMW 318i engine that dies on my that way.
06:38 PM XXCoder: sounds like might be design flaw
06:38 PM Loetmichel: thanks BMW for making the oil holes in the crank shaft to small on those
06:38 PM Loetmichel: it is
06:39 PM Loetmichel: if you ever buy a used car with that 1.8/2.0 liter 4 cylinder: get a contract that states the former users/owners did ALL oil changes in time and with the good stuff
06:40 PM Loetmichel: if they have skipped some and there is soot/debris buildup in the oil pan it WILL fail eventually
06:41 PM Loetmichel: VERY unfun if you are driving at 100++mph on the highway an the engine stalls suddenly after throwing a rod/piston.
06:41 PM Loetmichel: at least i have fast reflexes ;)
06:42 PM XXCoder: :)
06:42 PM XXCoder: talking abouyt reflexes lol glad I got good ones sometimes
06:43 PM XXCoder: I was driving my van when I looked away for just a moment. seems someone stopped very hard, causing bunch of vehicles to stop right away. my van is pretty heavy so...
06:43 PM XXCoder: I braked quite hard, pumping when tires slid. I looked to right but there was car. wrong way left side was open so I steered very hard and stopped
06:43 PM XXCoder: I knew I couldnt stop in stop so had to get out of way lol
06:44 PM XXCoder: end result was my van was barely a inch away from car on right, and my van mirror would have destroyed her car mirror if I moved forward more. she was stunned lol
06:44 PM XXCoder: nice blue smoke too :P
06:45 PM XXCoder: I was 3-5 car lengths away at start but was looked away for less than a second so I had 2 car lengths to stop. way too short
06:45 PM XXCoder: 3-5 hm i think more like 5-7 but yeah
06:57 PM XXCoder: Loetmichel: its why im glad I always have distance between my vehicle and next one. because who knows would happen. dunno why some people love to follow so closely
07:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: impatient, legend in their own mind types of F1 wanabe drivers
07:07 PM XXCoder: indeed
07:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: irritating since I can stop way faster then they can
07:07 PM XXCoder: if someone gets real close, I vary my vehicle speed by tiny amount
07:08 PM XXCoder: like 1-2 mph
07:08 PM XXCoder: makes it less predicable so they back off
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I don't let anyone tailgate me anymore, too many idiots
07:09 PM XXCoder: yup
07:09 PM XXCoder: if someones stubborn ill just slowly slow down
07:09 PM XXCoder: evenually they change lines and speed away
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but they all know what they are doing, "trust me I'm an expert driver" types
07:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yes, best
07:10 PM XXCoder: over 90% of tailgaters just back off and stay there after my vary speed so its pretty rare I have to do second one
07:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's about 50% of the drivers around here, impatient and expert idiots
07:11 PM XXCoder: did it maybe 2-3 times after years of driving
07:11 PM roycroft: my casters have 1/2"-20 stems
07:11 PM roycroft: the pads on the scroll saw have 3/8"-16 stems
07:11 PM XXCoder: heh reminded myself of most recent slowdown one
07:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: have caught back up to a few upside down in the medians and similar
07:12 PM roycroft: i can easily drill the holes in the legs out to 1/2", but i have a really hard time doing that
07:12 PM roycroft: i don't like modifying things from factory like that if i can help it
07:12 PM * roycroft needs to figure out how to get over that
07:12 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: i know that feeling. Had a grandma in a small car pull out between two semis on the right lane (without looking in the rearview mirror) at 90kph while i was coming in from behind in a 2 ton station wagon at 200++kph. made a nice 80m of dotted black lines on the tarmac. had the car at 90kph about 2 newspapers from her back bumper.
07:12 PM roycroft: now i'm looking online for some nice casters with 3/8" stems
07:12 PM Loetmichel: gets the heart pumping for sure
07:13 PM roycroft: and waiting a week or so to do this
07:13 PM XXCoder: I was driving back home, very late. guy stayed very close even after 3-4 minutes of small random speed. so I started just losing 1-2 mph per minute. it got down to 45 mph when guy finally changed lines and sped off. thing is it was 2 am. my car and that driver car was ONLY cars in freeway, literally
07:13 PM XXCoder: loet ow
07:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: one time it was 4 kids in a brand new Mustang, 5-10 minutes later they were standing next to their upside down car looking at me drive by waving
07:13 PM * roycroft is a turtle driver, and doesn't have much trouble with traffic other than the too close followers
07:13 PM roycroft: and i do the same thing
07:13 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: may have been just using you as a "pacemaker"?
07:14 PM XXCoder: maybe but then guy was very close
07:14 PM XXCoder: I mean, cant see headlights close
07:14 PM Loetmichel: yeah, thats not good
07:14 PM roycroft: when they get too close and won't back off, i start by bumping the cruise control down a mph or two at a time
07:14 PM roycroft: if that doesn't work by the time i go down 5mph or so i just disengage the cruise control with my foot off the accelerator
07:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: one of our cars has a "The closer you get the slower I drive" sticker
07:15 PM roycroft: all the while watching my rear view mirror closely, so i can accelerate if a collision would be otherwise imminent
07:15 PM Loetmichel: well, getting rear ended can end funny sometimes.
07:16 PM roycroft: getting rear ended is the fault of the other driver 100% of the time
07:16 PM Loetmichel: had that while waiting on a roundabout in said 2 ton Opel Omega station wagon.
07:16 PM roycroft: but it can still result in serious damage and bodily injury
07:16 PM Loetmichel: ... heard a crash from behind while still on the brakes.
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "cant see headlights close" is an everyday thing here
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: several times a day
07:16 PM Loetmichel: got rear ended by some hotshot in a brandnew VW caddy...
07:16 PM roycroft: as it is in most of california
07:16 PM roycroft: even in the rural areas
07:17 PM roycroft: and they won't overtake
07:17 PM Loetmichel: result: his car was about a foot shorter, hood rolled up like a tuna can, both headlights in shards, leaking radiator fluid like crazy, front bumper somewhere IN the car...
07:17 PM roycroft: like, i'll be on the 101, which is a freeway in norcal, cruising at the speed limit in the right lane
07:17 PM XXCoder: here its not too bad, though be very aware when its raining
07:17 PM XXCoder: nobody knows how to drive in rain
07:17 PM roycroft: up in humbolt or mendocino county
07:18 PM roycroft: very little traffic
07:18 PM Loetmichel: my Opel: a few cracks in the paint on the bumper and one of the park sensors fallen in
07:18 PM roycroft: and someone will come up behind me can't-see-headlights close
07:18 PM roycroft: and stay there
07:18 PM roycroft: even though i'm driving at the limit
07:18 PM roycroft: and even though there's a passing lane with zero traffic
07:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you can be 10-20 over the limit here in the left lane and someone will tailgate and flash their lights
07:19 PM roycroft: the mentality seems to be "i want to drive faster and i insist that you do too"
07:19 PM roycroft: i would not do well back east
07:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: they just want to be in front of you without passing
07:20 PM roycroft: i do use the passing lane
07:20 PM roycroft: but only when people in the slow lane are going way below the limit
07:20 PM roycroft: and when i get in the passing lane i drive at the posted speed limit
07:20 PM XXCoder: I call those fearful speeder. they want to go really fast but afraid to go alone
07:20 PM roycroft: i only remain in the passing lane until i've overtaken the slow vehicle(s)
07:20 PM roycroft: that's kind of it
07:20 PM roycroft: they don't want to get the speeding ticket
07:21 PM roycroft: they want me to go fast and get the ticket
07:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I once had a guy behind me completely lose his mind when i didn't pull up and block and intersection so he could turn right 30 seconds earlier
07:21 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: there is an old german song about that. cant cite the whole lyrics here buts its basically about a businessman in his big mercedes at night on the autobahn following a girl in a 2CV and singing about how he likes it that for ONCE he dont have to hurry. And then you hear the girl singing how she is frightened by that big black car in the back and has all kinds of horror scenarios
07:21 PM Loetmichel: going thorugh her head
07:21 PM roycroft: i am, btw, courteous enough to watch the passing lane to see if anyone is near before shifting into it
07:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he pulled in front of me trying get me to hit him (brake check and similar)
07:22 PM roycroft: if there are a bunch of speeders in that lane coming up fast, i just slow down until there's a clear interval and then overtake
07:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he actually stopped in the middle lane of the expressway and got out of his car
07:22 PM Loetmichel: in the end the takes and exit and wants to hide behind some hedges or something. and he sings about "byebye pretty lady, here our ways part, it was nice to have known you"
07:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we passed him on the right shoulder at 5mph
07:23 PM roycroft: i've dealt with folks like that a lot
07:23 PM XXCoder: capt jeez
07:23 PM roycroft: i once was driving at the speed limit on a side road
07:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: older guy as well
07:23 PM roycroft: the limit was 35mph
07:24 PM roycroft: some guy came up so close i think a piece of newspaper would not fit between his bumper and mine
07:24 PM roycroft: no traffic
07:24 PM roycroft: it was a two lane road, but it was a straight stretch, so legal to pass
07:24 PM roycroft: but he wanted to tailgate me badly
07:25 PM roycroft: so i slowed down very very gradually, smiled, and tried to wave him by me
07:25 PM roycroft: that only pissed him off
07:25 PM roycroft: i finally slowed down to a complete stop
07:25 PM roycroft: and waved him by
07:25 PM roycroft: he finally did so
07:26 PM roycroft: and i continued on my way
07:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: had similar, I had to actually pull onto the shoulder and stop to get them to pass
07:26 PM roycroft: the speed limit increased to 55 after a bit, and i moved up to the limit
07:26 PM roycroft: he was way ahead of me, but saw me, and started slowing down
07:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: like tailgating is how you are supposed to drive
07:27 PM roycroft: i kept safe distance the whole time but then he brake checked me seriously
07:27 PM roycroft: like he slammed on his brakes
07:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yup, nuts
07:27 PM roycroft: being a safe distance behind him, i got nowhere near him
07:27 PM roycroft: but after that, he drove 15mph in a 55 for about 10 miles
07:27 PM roycroft: and every time i tried to overtake he would straddle the road and block me
07:28 PM XXCoder: road rage isnt funny
07:28 PM roycroft: i don't get it
07:28 PM roycroft: *i* was not the one in a hurry
07:28 PM roycroft: i was perfectly fine going 15mph
07:28 PM roycroft: but the rage was strong in that one
07:28 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: they feel slighted if you drive to slow for their liking and take it out on you if they get the chance.
07:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: they are looking for confrontation
07:28 PM roycroft: yes, they aer
07:28 PM Loetmichel: pretty common everywhere i think
07:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how you get shot around here
07:28 PM XXCoder: yeah I always plan trip so I have 30 minutes before appointment or work shift
07:29 PM roycroft: and smiles and flashing peace signs only gets them angry
07:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've warned idiots not to do that anywhere near the city
07:29 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: s/angry/MORE anglry
07:29 PM XXCoder: so i always have plenty of time
07:29 PM roycroft: smile?
07:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you will get shot in minutes if not sooner
07:29 PM * roycroft is pretty sure he moved away from chicago just in time
07:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: that is the difference between the city and the country around here, in the city people are happy to give you trouble if you ask for it
07:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the country people tend to put up with bad behavior
07:31 PM roycroft: when i lived in chicago motorists were kind of crazy in the city and in much of the suburbs
07:31 PM roycroft: but out in the country they were pretty ok
07:31 PM roycroft: i took the el or the subway most of the time so i did not have to deal with motorists that much
07:32 PM roycroft: but in california, as i said a while ago, people drive insanely everywhere
07:32 PM roycroft: even in the middle of nowhere
07:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: anytime near the rush hours it's just impatient aggressive driving with poor driving skills
07:32 PM XXCoder: I'm just glad I only drove to calfornia once. to get mk3s and filament rolls
07:32 PM roycroft: not to mention they all have cell phones now
07:32 PM XXCoder: most of it was "nowhere" so very few cars
07:32 PM roycroft: when i lived in chicago cell phones did not exist
07:33 PM XXCoder: just glad I managed to drive to next gas station lol was really low when I arrived
07:33 PM roycroft: much of mendocino county is called "the lost coast"
07:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have had people that were tailgating me crash into the car in front of me since I had to change lanes quickly to avoid being the target meyself
07:34 PM Loetmichel: btw. there was a (rare) case of a "brake checker" here in germany a few years ago where the one in the rear car died in the accident. IIRC the brake checker was tried and convicted for murder with a deadly weapon and got lifetime.
07:34 PM roycroft: because there are are no towns, and very very few people there
07:34 PM roycroft: i've driven down highway 1 on the lost coast, where i'd see another car every 20 minutes or so, and still had to deal with road ragers
07:34 PM XXCoder: roy theres sigificant miles streach between north and south calfornia with no gas station at all. like 100 miles
07:34 PM roycroft: see, i don't get that, loetmichel
07:35 PM XXCoder: I was already at 130 miles left or so predicted. I was at 15 miles left predicted when I fueled up
07:35 PM roycroft: what if an animal or person ran across the road and the "brake checker" slammed on the brakes for that reason
07:35 PM roycroft: how is that differnt?
07:35 PM roycroft: it's the person following too close who is at fault
07:35 PM Loetmichel: it is different because of intention
07:36 PM roycroft: when you're behind another vehicle the only safe way to proceed is to assume that the vehicle in front of you is going to slam on the brakes at any random time
07:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah braking just to be a dick to try and get rear ended is malicious
07:36 PM Loetmichel: a brakecheck done "right" doesent leave the victim time to re-establish the safety distance
07:36 PM Loetmichel: and that IS taken into account here
07:36 PM XXCoder: I guess on insurance its behind thats always at fault, while front driver can be charged or not if brake checking
07:36 PM roycroft: i've done minor brake checks
07:36 PM roycroft: but most i just decelerate
07:37 PM roycroft: again, though, watching the rear view mirror constantly, and being prepared to accelerate to avoid collision
07:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm ready for flares like fighter aircraft
07:37 PM roycroft: i would *never* intentionally cause a collision
07:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: follow too close, flares
07:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Gallager had a routing about how everyone should get dart guns for bad drivers, at the end of the day the police just drive around ticketing cars full of darts
07:39 PM roycroft: bottled, concentrated farts that automatically discharge to the rear when someone gets too close would be fun
07:39 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: btw: following to close is called "nötigung" here. and carries pretty heavy penalities if getting caught. BUT: if you can believable explain that the one in front cut into your lane and there was simply no time to reestablish the distance then the one in front gets the blame.
07:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've considered making an EMP to disable them
07:40 PM roycroft: it's the same here
07:40 PM roycroft: and it happens far too often
07:40 PM roycroft: especially when the one cutting in is in rage mode
07:40 PM XXCoder: if hologram tech existed I'd make my car "longer" by a foot on front and another for back
07:40 PM XXCoder: so theres more room to push back tailgaters
07:40 PM roycroft: i've considered getting a dash cam
07:41 PM roycroft: and i well may do so before i next go down to california
07:41 PM XXCoder: roy me too. expecially since I cannot replace my car now. no money
07:41 PM Loetmichel: I have considered to get a "cow bar" for the back bumper.
07:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they work great for accidents
07:41 PM XXCoder: id suggest so
07:41 PM Loetmichel: "just let them sort their problems themselves" :)
07:41 PM XXCoder: get ones with both front and rear
07:41 PM roycroft: that would be ideal
07:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: son was recently hit from the side, driver blew the stop sign, cam showed the whole thing, slam dunk getting their insurance to pay up
07:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the other driver lied to the police about how she stopped
07:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: as soon as she heard, "let's look at the cam" she shut up
07:43 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: when we were in africa with THAT: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=16316&g2_serialNumber=1
07:43 PM XXCoder: very miliary looking. vaguely reminds me of vw bus
07:44 PM Loetmichel: at some time we were in the cab drinking coffee and the driver suddenly laughed, then something crashed and a merc limo went flying into the curb
07:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: around here they are also intimidated by the size of your car
07:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you have an SUV or larger they pull less crap
07:44 PM Loetmichel: driver told us afterwards that they drove aside his window and started to wave with a pistol to get him to stop
07:44 PM Loetmichel: he just laughed and pulled the steering wheel left
07:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you are in a small car they just cut you off or tailgate
07:45 PM XXCoder: geez
07:45 PM XXCoder: if I lived there id get large vehicle. assuming I stayed alive
07:45 PM Loetmichel: (nobody said bandits are smart, but really? attacking an ex military truck with a pistol?)
07:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not too smart
07:46 PM XXCoder: yeah
07:49 PM Loetmichel: ... especially when said 13 ton truck has visible dents and bruises in the 60mm by 5mm steel pipe the bumpers and side tanks are made of ;)
07:52 PM XXCoder: :)
09:40 PM XXCoder: pretty cool https://www.reddit.com/r/functionalprint/comments/xjs0th/i_dropped_a_bunch_m4_and_m3_nuts_and_to_sort_them/
09:40 PM XXCoder: fast sorter for nuts
09:42 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KKZR-n3Zws
09:46 PM Tom_L: kinda cheesy really
09:47 PM XXCoder: kinda swisscheesy
09:48 PM XXCoder: looks like engineering student project
09:48 PM Tom_L: 1st year...
09:49 PM XXCoder: fun lol
11:34 PM mrec: I have a very weird issue here
11:34 PM mrec: G91
11:34 PM mrec: G1 X-70.000000
11:34 PM mrec: G90
11:34 PM mrec: G91
11:34 PM mrec: G1 X140.000000
11:34 PM mrec: G90
11:34 PM mrec: ends up at X44.481
11:34 PM mrec: the starting point is X0
11:36 PM mrec: if I change G1 to G0 it's okay
11:36 PM mrec: any idea what could cause that?
11:36 PM mrec: I'm debugging why psng doesn't work properly with my larger stock
11:49 PM mrec: does linuxcnc.command support some kind of timeout?
11:50 PM mrec: There is a default timeout - so if your command runs past 5 seconds, the wait will return before the command finishes.
11:50 PM mrec: damn....
11:50 PM mrec: and no error message what a shit
11:54 PM mrec: and the best of that is that it's doing a G1 instead of G0
11:54 PM mrec: so this can easily happen with everyone...
11:55 PM mrec: another thing is why does print() not work inside that glade/python pushbutton callback
11:55 PM mrec: the logging module doesn't work either
11:56 PM mrec: well it's probably twisting around stdout or whatever.
