12:53 AM roycroft: well, i found the two piece spool for the sunlu filament, so i'm giving the black stuff a go
01:02 AM roycroft: it will work or it won't
01:02 AM roycroft: if it does i'll print with it until it's gone or it doesn't work
01:02 AM roycroft: if it doesn't work right away i'll toss it and move on to the grey stuff tomorrow when it arrives
01:02 AM t4nk_fn: I say: a very hearty good mourning this morning, my two-bit friends!
01:08 AM XXCoder: roycroft: nic
01:09 AM roycroft: we'll see
01:10 AM roycroft: i put the spool on the rollers, so perhaps it will unspool better
01:12 AM roycroft: it looks fine so far, but it's on layer 2
01:12 AM roycroft: if i have nine finished boxes in the morning i'll be very happy
01:12 AM roycroft: if not i'll go "oh well"
01:13 AM XXCoder: yeah
01:13 AM XXCoder: check on it after some time, in case it has wires
01:13 AM roycroft: i'm going to bed in a few minutes
01:13 AM roycroft: i have to start work at 5am
01:13 AM XXCoder: my brothers sunlu had wire at beginning then rest of roll was fine
01:14 AM XXCoder: good night
01:14 AM roycroft: i was planning on tossing this spool in the trash
01:14 AM roycroft: so if i get anything good out of it i'll be happy
01:14 AM XXCoder: yeah
04:19 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
06:18 AM JT-Cave: installed Debian 11.4, changed sources to sid and comment out security... installing now we shall see if the gpu is working
06:20 AM JT-Cave: I think the issue is the AMD RDNA 2 architecture on the video card is so new
06:22 AM JT-Cave: downloaded emc 2.8.2 and it still has libboost-python requirement fixed to one version 1.62.0 at least I think that's the version I backported on the bp
07:44 AM pere: JT-Cave: did the linuxcnc packages in sid not work?
08:43 AM pere: is there any interest in testing a debian 12/bookworm based live ISO?
09:11 AM Loetmichel_: *niiiice* $me is just using a 40W china c02 laser to do powder coating removal on a steel enclosure to make it conducting / faraday cage on the inside. MUCH less work than grinding ;) (but the worker i ordered to change the parts is slightly panicked after i explained why he has to ALWAYS wear that 10600nm glasses near the machine, even if the lid is closed.)
09:11 AM Loetmichel_: :D
09:13 AM Tom_L: pere, i have a test pc i could try it on
09:15 AM pere: Tom_L: I can guide you through the build process. do not have a good place to put 3 GiB ISO image.
09:16 AM pere: Start with this: sudo apt install live-build && mkdir live-build && cd live-build && lb config --config https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/buster-live-build/
09:17 AM pere: you need around 9 GiB of free space, if I remember correctly.
09:18 AM roycroft: your worker should be a bit panicked about that
09:19 AM roycroft: a healthy dose of fear will tend to counter incipient complacency
09:20 AM Loetmichel_: roycroft: i may have overdone it describing what happened when i hid the "laser test" button while my finger was in the beam path... and then had him imagine what his eyes would do when 40W hit on less than 3mm diameter of tissue... :)
09:22 AM roycroft: overstating your case is not bad when it comes to safety
09:23 AM Loetmichel_: s/hid/hit
09:24 AM JT-Cave: pere, I've not gotten that far, IIRC they worked fine the first time I installed sid
09:26 AM pere: JT-Cave: good. worked for me too when testing the bookworm iso.
09:32 AM roguish[m]: JT-Cave:
09:43 AM norias: howdy.
09:47 AM jpa-: Loetmichel_: what's the problem with lid? don't trust the window?
09:48 AM JT-Shop: roguish[m], up here
09:48 AM Loetmichel_: jpa: poor form fit. you can see the laser working between the lid and the body at certain angles.
09:48 AM pere: Tom_L: once you got the git repo, you should witch to branch bookworm and follow the README instructions.
09:48 AM Loetmichel_: the window is trustable
09:49 AM jpa-: Loetmichel_: heh :)
10:15 AM perry_j1987: morning guys
10:22 AM Tom_L: pere, it will have to be later on but i'll check the logs
10:25 AM pere: Tom_L: ack.
10:25 AM Tom_L: working...
10:26 AM Tom_L: it will be this evening before i can build it
10:30 AM Tom_L: pere, i've at least got the repo
10:32 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:32 AM Tom_dev: git checkout bookworm
10:32 AM Tom_dev: error: Your local changes to the following files would be overwritten by checkout:
10:32 AM Tom_dev: auto/config
10:32 AM Tom_dev: Please commit your changes or stash them before you switch branches.
10:32 AM Tom_dev: Aborting
10:32 AM Tom_dev: i made no changes :)
10:33 AM Tom_dev: gotta run...
10:42 AM pere: Tom_L: just do 'git checkout auto/config' to get rid of the change done by lb config, and switch to the correct branch after this. not sure why I did not get this during my testing.
10:42 AM coredump[m]: the good folks at mesanet are going to check if my 7i96 is repairable or replaceable. Peter and katharine have been very attentive. I will hope for the best ;D
10:50 AM roycroft: some folks complain that the mesa cards are expensive, but for what they do, and for the customer service and programming/configuration support one gets, i think they're a bargain
10:51 AM coredump[m]: agreed, roycroft
10:56 AM perry_j1987: could someone help get me setup on a better way to touch off this gang tool setup heh
10:56 AM perry_j1987: i'd like to be able to just touch off tool 1 and be rdy to go if i loose steps or etc
10:57 AM perry_j1987: im so tired of doing every tool every time now lol

11:26 AM * gywilo[m] uploaded an image: (36KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/bamQqghlnwVVmcGffpaLXLcP/unknown.png >
11:26 AM gywilo[m]: I'm not seeing any homing methods within kins_name.c for any of the kinematics files.... (full message at https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/libera.chat/dcf52a11d2c61408cd0ed3d3a8a8d7fb8779125f)
11:34 AM gywilo[m]: [some machines, like delta, hexapods, pentapods need to be homed with all axes at once]
11:35 AM gywilo[m]: I'd like to understand how this homing functionality is achieved with linuxCNC
11:42 AM gywilo[m]: it looks like there is a 'home_sequence' parameter for each JOINT, within the ini config file. Perhaps setting all joints to 'HOME_SEQUENCE = 0' would be sufficient
11:43 AM gywilo[m]: is there a default config .INI file for each machine type? I would be interested to view for delta/hexapod/pentapod
11:48 AM Tom_L: pere, should the readme.md be bookworm instead of buster?
11:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:49 AM Tom_dev: P: Symlinking hooks...
11:49 AM pere: Tom_L: yes.
11:49 AM Tom_dev: ./auto/config: 21: ./auto/config: --config: not found
11:49 AM Tom_L: i'll edit that line and try again
11:50 AM GTKplusplus[m]: I've gotten fed up with dealing with gmocappy
11:50 AM GTKplusplus[m]: So I'm trying out axis, with a brand new config to be safe
11:50 AM GTKplusplus[m]: And I can't get it out of estop. And when it gets out (on it's own time) I can't have it toggle on machine power
11:50 AM pere: Tom_L: let me swap over to my copy.
11:50 AM GTKplusplus[m]: Every day I get closer to buying a new monitor just to use a UI that actually worms
11:51 AM GTKplusplus[m]: s/worms/works/
11:51 AM pere: Tom_L: oh, a missing \ in line 20.
11:52 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm_build.png
11:53 AM Tom_dev: pere, what file?
11:53 AM pere: auto/config
11:53 AM GTKplusplus[m]: And now after 4 or 5 minutes it turned on by itself
11:53 AM Tom_dev: added
11:53 AM GTKplusplus[m]: I love axis /s
11:54 AM Tom_dev: pere, building
11:54 AM Tom_dev: may not be here when it's done
11:55 AM pere: Tom_dev: very good. fix pushed.
11:56 AM Tom_dev: puts the iso in the desktop folder?
11:56 AM jpa-: gywilo[m]: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/src/hal/components/homecomp.comp seems like it might be relevant, but i don't know any details about it
11:59 AM Tom_L: pere, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm2.png
12:00 PM pere: did you reconfigure after switching branches? look to me like it is trying to build on buster.
12:00 PM Tom_dev: i am on buster
12:00 PM Tom_dev: do i need to install bullseye first?
12:00 PM pere: sure, but config/build should say bookworm.
12:01 PM pere: lb config as instructed in the README should set up the build for bookworm, if on the bookworm branch.
12:01 PM Tom_dev: git branch shows bookworm selected
12:01 PM pere: if it was wrong, you will have to do sudo lb clean to start over.
12:01 PM pere: linuxcnc-uspace is in bookworm (or at least was in bookwork yesterday), so it should be found.
12:02 PM Tom_dev: cleaned and trying again
12:03 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm3.png
12:04 PM Tom_dev: looks like some libs are missing
12:04 PM Tom_dev: i need to run but i'll try again later on
12:08 PM GTKplusplus[m]: ZincBoy[CA, ON] I give up on getting probe screen to work
12:08 PM jpa-: i should get started on getting probe screen to work :)
12:08 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Even after moving to axis M6 doesn't work.
12:09 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Probe does but I need to be able to do tool changed
12:09 PM GTKplusplus[m]: s/changed/changes/
12:09 PM jpa-: ah, that - i need to figure out something custom for M6, because sometimes i want to reset tool length offset and sometimes not
12:10 PM GTKplusplus[m]: It still crashes the program when I confirm I put the tool in. Rerunning M6 works, because then I skip the tool change window
12:10 PM pere: Anyone recognize the hanging G71 issue tested in <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/pull/1869 >? I forgot where I found the issue. Thought it was on github, but fail to find it there, so it might have been here.
12:10 PM Tom_L: pere, what libs should i be looking for?
12:10 PM GTKplusplus[m]: My previous remap was very simple. You set a reference tool (m600, then M6 to it) and rerunning M6 to the currently used tool just reprobes it
12:11 PM GTKplusplus[m]: But current setup doesn't work because it stops halfway through, killing program execution, so I can't do tool changes in programs anymore
12:11 PM pere: Tom_L: none, it should just work...
12:11 PM jpa-: GTKplusplus[m]: i have the same problem with axis that the remap code just stops when it executes the "original" M6
12:11 PM Tom_L: pere, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm3.png
12:12 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Yeah, I have no idea how to solve this at this poit
12:12 PM GTKplusplus[m]: s/poit/point/
12:12 PM pere: Tom_L: do you have bookworm listed in /usr/share/live/build/data/debian-cd/?
12:12 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Aside from throwing money at a new monitor and using an actually working UI
12:12 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Something with built in probing
12:12 PM GTKplusplus[m]: So that I can use my standard macro
12:13 PM pere: Tom_L: the error most be above that image, as libcrypt is libssl, and have been around for decades.
12:13 PM Tom_L: no it is not there
12:13 PM Tom_L: buster jessie sid squeeze and stretch
12:14 PM pere: Tom_L: oh. I forgot created a symlink to sid as a workaround for live-build in buster not knowing how to handle bookworm. perhaps that is the problem you are facing? I ran into the lack of lilo in bookworm, so I did not expect that issue.
12:15 PM pere: sudo ln -s sid /usr/share/live/build/data/debian-cd/bookworm
12:15 PM pere: it is a nasty hack. a better aproach would be to upgrade live-build.
12:15 PM pere: sorry, I forgot about that.
12:17 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Also, really. Wtf is about machine power just taking ages to register the button press on axis?
12:18 PM GTKplusplus[m]: It's a purely software toggle on this machine
12:18 PM Tom_L: pere, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm4.png
12:19 PM pere: Tom_L: this is weird.
12:20 PM Tom_L: this is a clean buster install i use for test
12:20 PM Tom_L: if that helps
12:20 PM pere: mine is an old upgraded one started over a decade ago. guess I need to try a clean install. lack the disk space to do so.
12:21 PM Tom_L: that's why we're testing
12:21 PM Tom_L: :)
12:21 PM pere: I am starting to wonder if something broke last night, or what on earth is going on here. I'm doing a new build now to see.
12:22 PM Tom_L: what's your timezone?
12:22 PM Tom_L: i need to leave for a while
12:22 PM Tom_L: cst USA here
12:23 PM pere: +0200.
12:23 PM Tom_L: -6 iirc here
12:23 PM pere: lets continue later. very glad to detect this berkeley quality software issue. :)
12:23 PM Tom_L: heh
12:23 PM Tom_L: np
12:27 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: That is why I ripped all the toolchange stuff out of probe screen in my version. Seemed to conflict with my actual M6 remap.
12:28 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Your version unfortunately doesn't work either
12:28 PM GTKplusplus[m]: At least on my machine
12:28 PM GTKplusplus[m]: With it the macro that I have gotten working doesn't recognize variables in ini anymore
12:28 PM GTKplusplus[m]: s/have/know/, s/gotten/is/
12:29 PM GTKplusplus[m]: I have no idea what is going on, tbh
12:29 PM GTKplusplus[m]: And development just takes so much time which I don't have, which is why I don't want to make my own ui
12:32 PM jpa-: GTKplusplus[m]: have to tried with & without the checkbox "Remap M6" checked in probe screen?
12:32 PM jpa-: it makes a difference, though i haven't yet got it working either way :)
12:33 PM GTKplusplus[m]: Yes
12:33 PM GTKplusplus[m]: No change
12:41 PM pere: Tom_L: the build still succeed on my test machine. :/
12:52 PM roycroft: i decided to use purple filament for my storage boxes for non-standard hardware, because it's going to be a royal pain in the butt to organize that stuff
12:54 PM roycroft: also, purple is a pretty color
12:54 PM roycroft: and most importantly, atomic filament have it in stock right now
12:59 PM unterhaus_: When a boring head is said to be 2", is that the diameter of the head or how far it will extend out?
01:01 PM jpa-: unterhaus_: usually it is the diameter of the holder and the boring range should be indicated separately
01:01 PM unterhaus_: so far they have only said how far they would extend
01:02 PM jpa-: compare with e.g. https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/H24e1368aa7d04348986c51a04bb5fdf2d.jpg
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.instagram.com/p/CgZgo2OpS0G/
01:07 PM unterhaus_: Criterion got really expensive all of a sudden
01:09 PM unterhaus_: Cap'n, what's he doing with an esp32 and lcnc?
01:10 PM unterhaus_: should have grabbed a link, now I can't find it
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus_: making it work
01:19 PM unterhaus_: making it work for what?
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: because he wants to
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: LCNC using some PC or Rpi and an ESP32 for software stepping
01:23 PM XXCoder: roycroft: did the black sunlu complete?
01:29 PM fogl: hello
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: howdy
01:31 PM fogl: is there an outout which is active when machine is at standstill and in manual mode. I would like to enable manual tool change during manual and standstill.
01:32 PM fogl: I have a machine with foot pedal toll clamping control.
01:33 PM fogl: toll=tool
01:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fogl: you can make one active
01:39 PM fogl: based on which pin
01:39 PM fogl: probably motion.something
01:39 PM fogl: ?
01:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: do you have any free pins on your IO? Which hardware are you using for IO? LPT + BOB, Mesa cards, something else??
01:40 PM fogl: yes
01:40 PM jpa-: !halui.program.is-running && motion.in-position could work
01:42 PM fogl: and i would like also to lock the linuxcnc when i start the manual tool change procedure - is there an input to lock it?
01:42 PM fogl: @jpa: i see - this should work - will try :)
01:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: like hitting the Pause button
01:43 PM fogl: motion.enable IN BIT
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: StepConf even has an option for "Prompt for Tool Change"
01:43 PM fogl: no, i would like to prevent that somebody jogs machine or start the program
01:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I forget what it uses. You can try it and see what it generates
01:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh a real lock on the machine
01:47 PM fogl: i am not sure how is this typically done, but i assume there should be some safety
01:47 PM jpa-: toggling motion.enable will throw error on GUI usually
01:52 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I think you can do this with some HAL logic and setting motion.feed-inhibit as well as disabling axis.x.jog-enable. Both of these together will prevent jogging as well as programmed motion.
01:57 PM fogl: @zincBoy: will try that, thank you :)
01:59 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, the BP is moving with Axis :)
02:28 PM cncturndeg: Hi i run into big problem with the lathe macro on a other motherbord or machine
02:28 PM cncturndeg: the gmocappy starts up
02:28 PM cncturndeg: but with the lathemacros embedded tab it fails to start no buttons only the preview
02:29 PM cncturndeg: sim.gmoccapy.lathe_configs lathe works
02:31 PM cncturndeg: is the founder andypugh here ?
02:32 PM JT-Cave: Andy is not the author of gmocccappy
02:32 PM JT-Cave: the author hangs on the forum only
02:33 PM cncturndeg: ok can i upload somwhere the output of the console so this guy can see what happend
02:33 PM XXCoder: dpaste is fine for that
02:34 PM JT-Cave: on the forum you can
02:34 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I have encountered this and it is usually a misconfigured INI. What errors do you see?
02:34 PM JT-Cave: no one here knows anything about gommaccopy
02:34 PM cncturndeg: lathe_c runs with lots of warnings !
02:37 PM cncturndeg: let me paste it
02:38 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Use dpaste. Don't paste it here
02:39 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:39 PM cncturndeg: https://dpaste.org/bYDCV
02:44 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Ah, you are using 2.9. Sorry can't help you with that. Any reason you can't use 2.8.2?
02:45 PM cncturndeg: the new cycles are in master so 2.9
02:47 PM pere: cncturndeg: do you see the same error with axis?
02:47 PM JT-Shop: you should be asking on the forum in the gomaccpy section
02:47 PM cncturndeg: let me test this
02:48 PM * pere find forums a horrible interface for dialog.
02:50 PM perry_j1987: i wish i could just understand whats going on sometimes lol
02:51 PM perry_j1987: just homed the lathe and switched to t1 then went and did test cut and touchoff g54 and entered in what i measured /2 for radius
02:51 PM perry_j1987: g54 doesnt change when i jog around at all
02:51 PM perry_j1987: just says -0
02:53 PM cncturndeg: G8 G7 ?
02:54 PM Tom_L: pere, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm5.png
02:54 PM perry_j1987: G8 is active it says
02:54 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, don't have the libs to run your gui?
02:54 PM pere: Tom_L: I got live-build version 1:20190311. Which is your version?
02:54 PM Tom_L: how do i check?
02:55 PM pere: dpkg -l live-build
02:55 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:55 PM pere: Tom_L: are you sure your disk is not full? broken perl in build chroot is very hard to get without a full disk.
02:55 PM Tom_dev: ii live-build 1:20190311 all Live System Build Components
02:55 PM Tom_dev: it isn't full
02:55 PM Tom_dev: 500gb with buster install
02:55 PM Tom_dev: that's it
02:56 PM pere: try sudo chroot chroot perl -V
02:56 PM roycroft: yay! a little packet of gummi bears just arrived in a big box!
02:56 PM XXCoder: nice lol
02:57 PM roycroft: the shipper padded the gummi bears with some spools of filament so they wouldn't get damaged in shipping
02:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why for the live LCNC if LCNC is in the Debian repos?
02:57 PM XXCoder: smart. gummi bears is expensive and brittle
02:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just easier for noobs?
02:57 PM Tom_dev: sudo chroot chroot perl -V
02:57 PM Tom_dev: perl: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypt.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
02:57 PM JT-Shop: Tom_dev, still installing dependencies for qtpyvcp
02:58 PM pere: Tom_dev: so the directory where the live environment was built is somehow broken. :(
02:58 PM pere: do you have a build.log file?
02:58 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/build.log
03:00 PM cncturndeg: so here lathe_macros runs under AXIS
03:00 PM cncturndeg: set me test under tochy
03:00 PM pere: Tom_L: this make me belive the 'sudo lb clean' step has failed:
03:00 PM pere: P: Begin bootstrapping system...
03:00 PM pere: W: skipping bootstrap, already done
03:01 PM pere: if sudo lb clean do not remove the chroot, try doing it manually.
03:01 PM cncturndeg: pere it runs under axis
03:01 PM Tom_dev: lb clean
03:01 PM Tom_dev: P: Executing auto/clean script.
03:01 PM Tom_dev: [2022-07-26 15:01:00] lb clean noauto
03:01 PM Tom_dev: P: Cleaning chroot
03:01 PM pere: I was looking for a failing debootstrap in the log, but debootstrap was skipped.
03:01 PM Tom_dev: how to do it manually?
03:02 PM pere: sudo rm -rf chroot
03:02 PM Tom_dev: if you want i can start from scratch
03:02 PM Tom_dev: just need to know what to get rid of
03:02 PM pere: that should be close to starting from scratch. there is also the apt cache in cache, but it should just speed up the process, not mess it up. :)
03:03 PM pere: the only step I can thing of that would be more 'start from scratch' is 'rm -rf config; git checkout config; lb config' :)

03:05 PM Tom_dev: i need to boot into another system for a bit. brb
03:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: starts around #2637
03:06 PM pere: Tom_L: it look like you get buster installed in your chroot, and then try to upgrade to bookworm. :(
03:06 PM cncturndeg: I see all Cyles of lathe macros in touchy
03:11 PM * roycroft wonders why one would want to install an os that hasn't been released yet to run linuxcnc, other than for testing
03:12 PM Tom_L: pere, are you building on bookworm?
03:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: because Debian is soo ooolld
03:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: by the time Debian releases something the hardware is obsolete
03:13 PM perry_j1987: lol
03:14 PM cncturndeg: No not running lathe_macros on the gmoccapy
03:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have had to shelve GPU cards and wait a year for Debian to catch up or make a new kernel
03:15 PM * JT-Shop installed sid because nothing else worked with my video card
03:15 PM Tom_L: keeps you out of the bars
03:16 PM pere: Tom_L: nope, I build on buster like you.
03:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT-Shop: I'm running a 5.18 backport kernel in Bullseye, that probably has your card in it
03:16 PM Tom_L: pere, what would be different?
03:16 PM pere: Tom_L: I do not understand what it can be. What do you get from 'sudo chroot chroot lsb_release -a'?
03:17 PM Tom_L: rebooting..
03:17 PM roycroft: there is a major debian release every two years, with point releases every 2-3 months, on average
03:17 PM cncturndeg: CaptHindsight[m] GPU on livekernal ?
03:17 PM pere: Debian/stable is solid and stable, but I try to upgrade my oldstable machines not too long after a new stable is released.
03:17 PM roycroft: new device drivers are often added to the point releases
03:17 PM cncturndeg: why not ubuntu
03:17 PM cncturndeg: as of Blender Use
03:17 PM pere: for this build I had to track down a machine with 10GiB free disk space, so I ended up on a buster machine.
03:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: cncturndeg: Ubuntu is almost like Linux, they just change the name of every file to keep you on your toes :)
03:18 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:18 PM * roycroft has tried ubuntu, and thinks the question to be asked is "why ubuntu?" not "why not ubuntu?"
03:19 PM Tom_dev: chroot: failed to run command ‘lsb_release’: No such file or directory
03:19 PM pere: roycroft: are you talking about my bookworm live ISO build regarding non-released oses?
03:19 PM roycroft: i'm referring to the ongoing conversation that i just stepped into the middle of
03:20 PM pere: roycroft: it is for testing, just as you suspected. :)
03:20 PM cncturndeg: Question can i see or get Files on Git from the past
03:20 PM pere: to make sure a LinuxCNC live ISO can be ready when the next release of Debian is stamped.
03:20 PM roycroft: and that's a very legitimate reason to do it
03:20 PM Tom_dev: pere, ^^
03:20 PM cncturndeg: Somone changed yesterday the UI and Py file
03:21 PM roycroft: this is not the first time a conversation has been had on this topic
03:21 PM Tom_dev: nor the last
03:21 PM pere: cncturndeg: you can do 'git checkout <commitid>' to jump to a specific point in git log history.
03:21 PM roycroft: and at times in the past folks were insisting on running linuxcnc on the latest, most bleeding edge development build of debian for their "production" machines
03:21 PM roycroft: which is the thing i cannot comprehend
03:21 PM cncturndeg: pere then i need to get the Git repro first
03:21 PM pere: Tom_dev: gah, then the chroot building stopped very early. What about 'cat chroot/etc/debian_version'?
03:22 PM roycroft: working with a development version for testing/porting to the new os release is a worthy thing, if that's what you're into
03:22 PM pere: cncturndeg: git clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/
03:22 PM Tom_dev: gah
03:22 PM Tom_dev: cat: chroot/etc/debian_version: No such file or directory
03:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: no such thing as new hardware and Debian stable
03:23 PM pere: wow. then the base-files package is not installed either, and that is in the base set created by debootstrap. hm, perhaps debootstrap do not understand bookworm...
03:23 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Me too. I am sticking with 2.8.2 on my mill until a new tested version is released. I don't want to experiment with safety critical systems.
03:23 PM JT-Shop: 15/64-20 brass screw done... looks pretty good even if the slot is a bit wide
03:24 PM Tom_dev: ZincBoy[CAON][m], awww jump in head first!!!
03:24 PM pere: Tom_dev: I got debootstrap version 1.0.114. Do you have /usr/share/debootstrap/scripts/bookworm ?
03:24 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I am running on a 6 year old pc for my mill controller and it is way faster than needed even still
03:24 PM Tom_dev: JT-Shop, that only took what?? 2-3 days?
03:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we use Gentoo for production machines with LCNC
03:24 PM pere: roycroft: does it matter that you do not comprehend it? do you want to?
03:25 PM Tom_dev: pere, yes
03:25 PM Tom_dev: wanna see the contents>?
03:25 PM pere: nope
03:25 PM roycroft: pere: i might possibly want to comprehend
03:26 PM roycroft: you could have hand-filed the slot in way less time than you spent machining it, jt-shop :)
03:26 PM pere: but try 'sudo debootstrap bookworm testchroot http://deb.debian.org 2>&1 | tee debootstrap.log' and share debootstrap.log if it fail.
03:26 PM pere: Tom_dev: ^
03:26 PM JT-Shop: only took a couple of minutes to machine...
03:27 PM Tom_dev: Failed getting release file http://deb.debian.org/dists/bookworm/Release
03:27 PM JT-Shop: 2 days to fix a scrambled hard drive
03:27 PM pere: (I used to hack debootstrap, debian-installer and live-build, so I kind of know how this works, and is very confused how it can fail like this. :)
03:27 PM Tom_dev: I: Target architecture can be executed
03:27 PM Tom_dev: I: Retrieving InRelease
03:27 PM Tom_dev: I: Retrieving Release
03:27 PM Tom_dev: E: Failed getting release file http://deb.debian.org/dists/bookworm/Release
03:27 PM pere: Tom_dev: Release changed name to InRelease, so that is not fatal.
03:28 PM pere: gained some more signatues to detect man-in-the-middle attacks to the apt sources.
03:31 PM newgra: pere now i got git linuxcnc
03:31 PM newgra: how to find the old files
03:32 PM newgra: i think andypugh changed it
03:32 PM pere: newgra: 'git log' is your friend. you can use 'git log path/to/file' to see its history and git log -p path/to file to see exactly what was changed.
03:33 PM * Tom_dev wonders what pere dreams about
03:34 PM pere: Tom_dev: a self sustained colony on Mars and world peace. :)
03:34 PM Tom_dev: you can't use world peace... all the Ms Americas use that in their bio
03:34 PM pere: Tom_dev: did the deboostrap run to completion?
03:34 PM Tom_dev: it stopped
03:34 PM Tom_dev: i posted the lines
03:35 PM Tom_dev: 15:27:31
03:35 PM pere: that caused it to stop? that is very strange.
03:36 PM Tom_dev: would i need something added to apt sources>
03:36 PM Tom_dev: ?
03:36 PM pere: Tom_dev: try dropping the url, ie only debootstrap bookworm testchroot
03:36 PM pere: perhaps your local deb.debian.org apt source is messed up. It is a CDN backed http source.
03:37 PM pere: or perhaps I made a typo. confused. :)
03:37 PM Tom_dev: now it's running
03:37 PM pere: My test run of 'sudo debootstrap bookworm testchroot' worked, at least.
03:37 PM Tom_dev: :)
03:37 PM pere: and cat testchroot/etc/debian_version return bookworm/sid as expected.
03:38 PM Tom_dev: i didn't log it
03:38 PM newgra: i need to go to sleep it is late in Europ
03:38 PM newgra: BY
03:38 PM Tom_dev: I: Base system installed successfully.
03:38 PM Tom_dev: last line
03:38 PM pere: newgra: good luck and good night. :)
03:39 PM pere: Tom_dev: right, so deboostrap is able to create bookworm chroots. good.
03:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why doesn't Debian backport new drivers for stable distros?
03:39 PM pere: CaptHindsight[m]: irc.debian.org #debian-devel might be a good place to ask.
03:39 PM Tom_dev: cat testchroot/etc/debian_version
03:39 PM Tom_dev: bookworm/sid
03:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: pere: i stopped going there
03:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they used to get angry about questions likethat
03:40 PM pere: Tom_dev: ok, last idea: sudo rm -rf *; git checkout . ; lb config; sudo lb build'
03:40 PM roycroft: so it's a typical linux channel
03:40 PM roycroft: full of angst, arrogance, and anger :)
03:40 PM pere: sound more like you two bring it with you. it seem to be present here too. :)
03:41 PM Tom_dev: that was violent! removed all my desktop icons :)
03:41 PM pere: Tom_dev: wipe everything, start from scratch. yeah.
03:41 PM roycroft: if linux channels ever get you down, though, you can always pop into #ciscohelp for a moment and the linux channels will look a lot better
03:42 PM pere: Tom_dev: why did you have your desktop icons in the buster-live-build directory?
03:42 PM Tom_dev: i wasn't in that directory at the time
03:42 PM Tom_dev: :)
03:42 PM pere: oh
03:42 PM Tom_dev: so pretty much everything is gone now
03:43 PM Tom_dev: good it's a test pc
03:44 PM pere: remind me of a story about SGI Irix from a long time ago. It used to set up rm for root as an alias for rm -i. We used to replace the root configuration with our own, without such aliases.
03:45 PM pere: next a irix consultant come along to help us with a problem, and the first he do after getting root access to the machine is rm /etc/*...
03:45 PM Tom_dev: now try to build it?
03:45 PM pere: the sudo lb build' part from above should already have tried to build it.
03:46 PM Tom_dev: it's gone now, i'll have to start fresh i think
03:46 PM pere: ah, the .git directory went too?
03:46 PM Tom_dev: everything in /home/xxx
03:47 PM pere: mkdir live-build && cd live-build && lb config --config https://github.com/LinuxCNC/buster-live-build && git checkout . && git checkout bookworm'
03:47 PM pere: and then lb config && sudo lb build
03:47 PM XXCoder: roycroft: reminded me of one time I went to ##java. I said hi, I got some programming issue
03:47 PM XXCoder: I was banned
03:47 PM * JT-Shop wonders what tom is doing?
03:47 PM Tom_dev: trying to screw up this install
03:47 PM XXCoder: I said to myself "okay I was saved from toxic communty"
03:48 PM pere: he is helping us get a newer live iso some time in the future. :)
03:48 PM Tom_dev: error: pathspec 'bookworm' did not match any file(s) known to git
03:48 PM pere: ah, sorry. wrong url.
03:48 PM Tom_dev: ahh i see that
03:48 PM pere: git remote add pere https://github.com/petterreinholdtsen/buster-live-build/ && git fetch pere
03:49 PM pere: I did cut-n-paste from the README, and forgot it is pointing to the official repo.
03:51 PM JT-Shop: well JET customer service sucks big time
03:51 PM Tom_dev: building
03:55 PM norias: hmmm.
03:55 PM pere: Tom_dev: the annoying thing is if it work now, and we have no idea why. :)
03:56 PM norias: This house I'm buying claims to have a 208V single phase outlet.
03:56 PM Tom_dev: haha
03:56 PM norias: I'm not sure how that happens
03:56 PM XXCoder: very safe
03:56 PM Tom_dev: pere, it does appear to be building ok
03:56 PM XXCoder: seriously though thats weird voltage
03:56 PM norias: XXCoder: aye.
03:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: pere: "Linux is violence"
03:56 PM norias: XXCoder: you can get 208V single from 208V three phase easily
03:56 PM norias: XXCoder: you can also get 120V single from it
03:57 PM pere: CaptHindsight[m]: linux is community, helping your friends and sharing knowledge. :)
03:57 PM norias: but I suspect the house is not wire with three phase
03:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: nah, spend some time in #Linux
03:58 PM pere: isn't it 230V+=10%, which would be 207-253V?
03:58 PM XXCoder: dont go to ##java
03:58 PM pere: +-, I mean.
03:58 PM norias: is the range really that wide?
03:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you get over the rainbows and fluffy bunnies pretty quick
03:58 PM norias: also, wouldn't it just get labeled 240V?
03:58 PM norias: I think 240 is nominal in the US
03:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: especially don't go there and ask about javascript
03:59 PM norias: when I went through the place I clearly saw an outlet labeled 208v
03:59 PM pere: norias: "The actual voltage coming out of the wall varied around the nominal voltages. The variance in most countries was around +/-6%. In 2003, mains voltages across the EU (which then included the UK) were standardised to 230VAC +/- 10%." according to <URL: https://www.ampworks.co.uk/myth-busters/mains-voltages-in-the-uk-and-the-eu-and-what-it-means-for-guitar-amps/ >. Believe it is +-10%.
03:59 PM XXCoder: capt lol. sadly I did not ask a javascript question before I was banned
03:59 PM norias: and it's labeled in the breakers
03:59 PM XXCoder: I never knew why I was banned
03:59 PM XXCoder: and no, my nick was not any different
04:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: norias: US is either 240 or 208 based on Delta or Wye transformer windings
04:00 PM pere: norias: what is rather weird labeling.
04:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: both are available here
04:00 PM norias: CaptHindsight[m]: huh. So the main would be 208?
04:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: norias: https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fb73169b3cf45501d1769e5/1607402458581-WZ642PSRS0ZP33X2FAC1/Wye-Delta+Windings+1.jpg?format=2500w
04:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: residential will only get 2-poles and a neutral
04:03 PM norias: hmmm
04:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: large multi-units will get 3-phase Wye most often today
04:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and commercial but industrial can pretty get whatever they want
04:03 PM norias: i've just never seen this in residential
04:04 PM norias: i called the power company and supposedly their records say it has 240V service
04:04 PM norias: and I can't see how you'd get 208V from 240V
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: older US is mostly 120/240 Delta
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: newer is 102/208 Wye
04:04 PM norias: ( other than transformer)
04:04 PM norias: oh. really?
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 120/208
04:05 PM roycroft: except on a day like today when it might be more like 102/204 delta :)
04:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you usually don't get 208 from 240
04:05 PM norias: huh. that's interesting
04:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Wye is easier to balance for the power co
04:06 PM pere: Tom_dev: I take it the build is still running?
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they started changing over in the 80's
04:06 PM Tom_dev: /home/tom/live-image-amd64.hybrid.iso 228.6MB
04:06 PM norias: i kinda feel ripped off
04:06 PM Tom_dev: just finished
04:06 PM norias: i want my 32 extra volts
04:07 PM Tom_dev: i will do a fresh buster install and try it again
04:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: norias: then ask for Delta
04:07 PM norias: or they could just send that other leg and I'll get a transformer :)
04:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: CaptHindsight: you can get 208 from delta but it's rare
04:07 PM Tom_dev: pere, last few lines of the build:
04:07 PM Tom_dev: Reading state information...
04:07 PM Tom_dev: E: Unable to locate package lilo
04:07 PM Tom_dev: E: Unable to locate package lilo

04:07 PM Tom_dev: Reading package lists...
04:07 PM Tom_dev: Building dependency tree...
04:08 PM Tom_dev: Reading state information...
04:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: norias: from the center tap of one winding to the common of the other 2 windings will get you 208
04:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: with delta
04:11 PM Tom_L: pere, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/bookworm/bookworm_build.png
04:12 PM pere: Tom_dev: ah, that is the same problem I ran into with the live-build in buster. fixed by editing /usr/lib/live/build/installer_debian-installer
04:13 PM pere: Tom_L: that was a very small iso. mine is 3 GiB.
04:13 PM Tom_dev: likely not a good one then
04:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the magic of Debian!
04:16 PM pere: CaptHindsight[m]: which platform are you working on getting linuxcnc to work on?
04:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ebuilds for Gentoo
04:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: been using Gentoo with LCNC since 2012 or so
04:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but the RTAI dev is going to make ebuilds now
04:18 PM JT-Shop: I'm glad someone else is having fun
04:18 PM Tom_L: heh
04:21 PM pere: CaptHindsight[m]: ah, nice. how long does it take to install an optimized linuxcnc from scratch using gentoo?
04:44 PM pere: time to sleep here. :)
04:44 PM Tom_L: pere,
04:45 PM Tom_L: i'll do a fresh install and try again
05:07 PM skiboy[m]: I did a retrofit on a CNC lathe and posted the docs here: https://github.com/Szalacinski/linuxcnc_novaturn_retrofit
05:55 PM gywilo[m]: what are the outputs from running PNCconf utility? how would I configure more than a 4 axis machine?
05:55 PM * gywilo[m] uploaded an image: (79KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/SVMdLlXmyPZkdcuznRoGWZPU/unknown.png >

05:56 PM gywilo[m]: it looks like I should be able to hand tailor outputs to suite my needs
05:56 PM gywilo[m]: the docs look light on that part though
05:56 PM skiboy[m]: Truthfully PNCconf is rather limited and is a starting point for most setups. In a lot of cases you end up having to edit it by hand, but it gives you the basic skeleton
05:57 PM gywilo[m]: does it write a single .INI file that I can edit? does it write firmware to the mesa boards?
05:57 PM gywilo[m]: how do we take it as a starting point and customize?
05:58 PM gywilo[m]: I'm referencing this page:
05:58 PM gywilo[m]: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/stable/html/config/pncconf.html
05:58 PM skiboy[m]: iverything should be in the configs folder in your home directory
05:58 PM skiboy[m]: s/iverything/everything/
05:59 PM skiboy[m]: Also depending on the mesa board LinuxCNC may be missing the firmware and you need to load it manually
06:00 PM gywilo[m]: ah, I ran the wizard, and I see a single 'my_LinuxCNC_machine.pncconf'
06:00 PM skiboy[m]: If I had to pick it up again I could, but it's one of those things that you learn how to do once and then purge it from your mind until you really need to do it again. The docs aren't great
06:01 PM gywilo[m]: looks like its a config file with a zillian parameters
06:01 PM * gywilo[m] uploaded an image: (438KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/muWmlwaaeQvVrVuNyYCuEcBx/unknown.png >
06:02 PM skiboy[m]: yup
06:02 PM gywilo[m]: okay, well that's helpful, thanks
06:02 PM skiboy[m]: I had to write custom real-time modules for my toolchanger. You'll probably have a simpler time
06:02 PM gywilo[m]: it sounds like that's the one file that I would need to customize to make work, correct?
06:03 PM skiboy[m]: That's the wrong one
06:04 PM skiboy[m]: Look at the code on my github for a bit more direction
06:04 PM gywilo[m]: okay, will take a look at your github
06:05 PM gywilo[m]: that's the wrong file? that's the single output from PNCconf wizard
06:06 PM skiboy[m]: The main files to work on are .hal and .ini files
06:06 PM skiboy[m]: Though there are more
06:06 PM skiboy[m]: Unless they changed the way it works with a new version or something
06:07 PM gywilo[m]: okay, I see
06:07 PM gywilo[m]: there is also a directory with the same name, and additional hal and ini files
06:08 PM skiboy[m]: Yeah it
06:08 PM skiboy[m]: * Yeah it's confusing af
06:08 PM gywilo[m]: so maybe that .pncconf file is just for the wizard
06:08 PM skiboy[m]: May take you a week to get everything correct if your wiring is good
06:09 PM gywilo[m]: oh, I'm expecting more
06:09 PM skiboy[m]: What model of CNC
06:09 PM gywilo[m]: its a hexapod variant, similar kinematics to genhexkins.c, but not so standard
06:10 PM gywilo[m]: its been a fun learning experience over the last few months
06:10 PM skiboy[m]: Oh, it's some weird delta machine
06:10 PM skiboy[m]: Not an actual industrial one
06:11 PM gywilo[m]: right
06:11 PM gywilo[m]: not yet ;P
06:13 PM gywilo[m]: I'm not seeing your github; do you have a link?
06:13 PM skiboy[m]: https://github.com/Szalacinski/linuxcnc_novaturn_retrofit
06:14 PM gywilo[m]: ohh, that looks like a fun machine!
06:15 PM gywilo[m]: thanks for the links, I will take a look at your config; I hope you don't mind if I ask you questions in the future!
06:16 PM perry_j1987: skiboy[m] how are youliking its operation
06:16 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:18 PM skiboy[m]: Seems to work fine, haven't milled anything yet. I need to make some small shims for the 12mm tools. It was built to take 1/2" tools but all of the reasonably priced tools are in metric
06:19 PM skiboy[m]: And I also need to make adapters for the boring rods. That's going to be my first project.
06:23 PM perry_j1987: add a pneumatic 5c chuck and your in heaven
06:24 PM perry_j1987: what kind of spindle motor does it have
06:26 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: skiboy looks like a nice machine! I like the slant bed, not often you see that and the turret in a small machine.
06:26 PM skiboy[m]: Thanks!
06:27 PM perry_j1987: i got a small lathe about that size
06:27 PM perry_j1987: gang tooling
06:29 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: I have a hardinge HLV that is in my conversion queue. I would prefer a slant bed CNC starting point though.
06:43 PM roycroft: if i were going to do a cnc conversion on a lathe i think i'd like a slant bed
06:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:47 PM Tom_dev: is there a new public key for linuxcnc?
06:47 PM Tom_dev: 3cb9fd148f374fef didn't seem to do the trick
06:49 PM Tom_dev: there we go..
06:49 PM Tom_dev: must be a new one
06:59 PM TurBoss: hello Tom_dev , can you try the ubuntu key servers? `gpg --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv`
07:00 PM Tom_dev: i used the ubuntu key server
07:00 PM TurBoss: ☹️
07:00 PM Tom_dev: with the old key
07:00 PM Tom_dev: there is a new key for InRelease
07:00 PM TurBoss: oh ok did't know
07:01 PM Tom_dev: must be very recent
07:02 PM Tom_dev: how can i list them?
07:04 PM silopolis[m]1: I've had only issues trying to use ppas on my fresh setup
07:05 PM silopolis[m]1: Resigned to use flatpaks and snaps 😔
07:05 PM Tom_dev: TurBoss, AB7E EF1B 07FE E0EE 663E
07:05 PM Tom_dev: might be the new one
07:08 PM TurBoss: Tom_dev: `gpg --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv EF1B07FEE0EE663E`
07:08 PM TurBoss: key is the last 16 chars
07:08 PM Tom_dev: yes
07:08 PM Tom_dev: i got that from my listing
07:12 PM _unreal_: I just dry fit my Z threaded rod
07:12 PM _unreal_: fianlly
07:12 PM _unreal_: finally
07:12 PM _unreal_: its now setup with the force arm and the thrust bearings
07:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: pere: " how long does it take to install an optimized linuxcnc from scratch using gentoo?" don't know, we use similar hardware for systems so it's mostly untar an image in a few minutes and you're done
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I think he has generic amd64 builds as well that just get untarred onto new systems
07:19 PM roycroft: it takes ONE MILLION SECONDS
07:19 PM _unreal_: anyone pick up a mega millions loto?
07:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 60 times less in minutes
07:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and that is a fact
07:20 PM roycroft: what if it's in dog seconds?
07:20 PM roycroft: or armadillo seconds?
07:20 PM roycroft: or tortoise seconds?
07:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: jesus seconds
07:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so if a day is a thousand years....
07:23 PM _unreal_: CaptHindsight[m], then I'm holding up really well
07:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: bible math is ahrd
07:24 PM roycroft: remember that jebus' pappy created the entire world in six day
07:24 PM roycroft: but then he had to take a long nap
07:24 PM roycroft: it plumb wore him out
07:25 PM _unreal_: jebus? well I guess we know who the atheists' is!!!!
07:25 PM roycroft: atheism is not logical
07:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well bible logic holds up
07:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: philosophize all you wish
07:32 PM roycroft: hmm, it's only 37 degrees
07:32 PM XXCoder: according to bible pi is 3
07:32 PM roycroft: and we've hit the peack high for the day
07:32 PM roycroft: peak
07:32 PM roycroft: it was 38 yesterday, and today was supposed to be hotter - i guess we've been spared
07:33 PM XXCoder: 93f so fun
07:33 PM XXCoder: according to google peak is at friday at 96f
07:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 23 1/3 C here
07:47 PM XXCoder: nice
07:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: stupid driver index here today is an 8
07:49 PM roycroft: yeah, the updated forecast shows the temperature going up again later this week
07:49 PM roycroft: peaking at 38 on friday
07:49 PM XXCoder: I just dont know why you wont add "c"
07:50 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Well not many people measure in kelvin and what other units are there? 🙂
07:51 PM XXCoder: doesnt really matter how common units is. I always add em
07:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: +C
07:51 PM XXCoder: in reprap I always use C and mm even though everyone uses em
07:51 PM Tom_L: Rankine
07:51 PM roycroft: because it shouldn't be necessary
07:51 PM roycroft: you know exactly what i mean
07:51 PM XXCoder: tom ya heard of that umm month ago. weird
07:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delisle_scale
07:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rankine_scale
07:52 PM roycroft: anyway
07:52 PM XXCoder: roy always nesscary since it might be something else besides temp
07:52 PM roycroft: i need to draw some gears, and i can't find the dimensions for what i need online easily
07:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://instrulearning.com/temperature/temperature-scales/
07:53 PM roycroft: before i had out to my excruciatingly hot shop to check machinery's handbook, will it tell me what i need to draw rack gears?
07:53 PM roycroft: i know the module and the angle
07:53 PM roycroft: and i know the finished size of the rack
07:53 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: In excruciating detail, yes.
07:54 PM roycroft: excruciating detail would make it worth the journey out into hades
07:54 PM roycroft: xxcoder: i use units when i think it is not clear from context
07:55 PM roycroft: and i don't want to have this discussion over and over again
07:55 PM roycroft: i'm going to do what i'm going to do :)
07:55 PM XXCoder: okay
07:55 PM roycroft: i'll be clear though that i'm not omitting temperature units specifically to irritate you
07:55 PM XXCoder: I know.
07:56 PM roycroft: anyway, i should head out into the hot shop and grab that book
07:56 PM roycroft: so i can sit in my air-conditioned office and draw a gear
07:56 PM roycroft: the cost of comfort is discomfort
07:56 PM roycroft: kind of zen, eh?
08:02 PM XXCoder: lol
08:03 PM XXCoder: finally fixed unifi controller setup
08:04 PM Tom_L: router?
08:06 PM roycroft: even better
08:06 PM roycroft: i found a copy of the 1943 edition already in my office
08:06 PM roycroft: no need to go out into the heat to retrieve it
08:08 PM roycroft: and yes, there are over 200 pages dedicated to gears
08:08 PM Tom_L: dammit. 2.8.2 source shouldn't be broke
08:09 PM roycroft: but i found what i need on page 5 of that section
08:11 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:37 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: someone broke the source build?
08:38 PM XXCoder: ouch. https://i.redd.it/4de0681fi0e91.jpg
08:38 PM XXCoder: seems someone left it out in rain. (picture not mine
08:38 PM Tom_L: some simple typo i'm sure
08:39 PM Tom_L: i don't do python
08:39 PM Tom_L: or it would probably be obvious
08:41 PM XXCoder: sometimes errors is annoying. one typo and theres 100 errors
08:41 PM XXCoder: though its often the case that first error points to where near typo is
08:41 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't think 2.8 would have errros
08:41 PM Tom_L: errors
08:42 PM Tom_L: might be building now
08:42 PM XXCoder: whoever commited it should have tested
08:43 PM Tom_L: pyvcp.py
08:45 PM Tom_L: one more try.. getting rid of gtksourceview2
10:17 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: funny, theres commit for tons of typos but not code typos
10:18 PM XXCoder: except for two
10:55 PM gywilo[m]: I'm trying to build LCNC from source; getting a configure error associated with 'yapps2'. Any ideas on what I should do here? Are these docs still up to date?
10:55 PM * gywilo[m] uploaded an image: (353KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/XuvSEGDZVlKUhscFivPVoXXb/unknown.png >
10:56 PM gywilo[m]: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/master/html/code/building-linuxcnc.html
11:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: gywilo: which version LCNC are you building?
