12:48 AM pere: what is the story behind sections 9.7.14.4 and onwards in the LinuxCNC documentation, <URL: https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/blob/master/docs/src/remap/remap.adoc#readahead-time-and-execution-time >?
01:08 AM randy: morning
01:11 AM TurBoss: morning
02:48 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:34 AM Tom_L: morning
04:35 AM TurBoss: hello
05:08 AM travis_farmer: Good Morning everybody :)
05:10 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:32 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:37 AM JT-Cave: gotta start moving to the new PC
05:39 AM CNCturnDE: Hi from Headed Machine - Someone here On understanding GIT
05:50 AM CNCturnDE: I Have learnd that Linuxcnc is a Open Source at Github
05:50 AM JT-Cave: yup
05:50 AM CNCturnDE: So for me in interest is the Advantige of Turn Macros as here https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/andypugh/gmoccatweak/configs/sim/gmoccapy/lathe_configs
05:50 AM CNCturnDE: i did Install and Update Debian 10
05:50 AM CNCturnDE: Linuxcnc 2.8.2-11 is running
05:52 AM CNCturnDE: JT-Cave can i get this Branch or Files to Download with a Git command
05:52 AM JT-Cave: git checkout branch-name
05:54 AM CNCturnDE: do i need to have the Main Linuxcnc source already
05:55 AM CNCturnDE: git clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/andypugh/gmoccatweak/configs/sim/gmoccapy/lathe_configs
05:56 AM CNCturnDE: That does not work
05:56 AM CNCturnDE: fatal: repository
06:00 AM JT-Cave: clone master then checkout the branch
06:02 AM JT-Cave: got clone https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc.git
06:06 AM CNCturnDE: downloading 300MB for getting a 2MB File SVG
06:07 AM CNCturnDE: JT-Cave what is the branch name
06:10 AM JT-Cave: you tell me :)
06:10 AM JT-Cave: click on the master branch in the repo and select the branch you want
06:11 AM JT-Cave: then copy the name and checkout the branch
06:12 AM CNCturnDE: Sir this one here https://github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/tree/andypugh/gmoccatweak/configs/sim/gmoccapy/lathe_configs
06:13 AM CNCturnDE: Is the Commit accepted as it is not longer in the list
06:16 AM randy: git checkout andypugh
06:16 AM randy: sorry, git checkout andypugh/gmoccatweak
06:22 AM CNCturnDE: and then git pull --rebas
06:26 AM CNCturnDE: i did copy all files over
06:26 AM CNCturnDE: no no Cycles at all
06:26 AM CNCturnDE: Expected <glade-interface>.  Got <interface>
06:31 AM CNCturnDE: Seams GTK3 is not installed Synaptics tells only Gtk2
06:35 AM * JT-Cave goes to clean chicken poop
06:36 AM CNCturnDE: Thanlk you i need to install new i think all broken
07:13 AM JT-Cave: well that was fun getting the 4' snake from under the bookcase and evicting it
07:24 AM Tom_L: just came by to say hello :)
08:52 AM JT-Cave: the big question is how the heck did it get inside
09:17 AM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: ooo, cool, what kink?
09:17 AM roguish[m]: kind?
09:34 AM roycroft: i've seen a lot of garter snakes here this year - more than usual
09:34 AM roycroft: but they're mostly pretty small
09:37 AM roycroft: awesome
09:37 AM roycroft: my 3d printer parts were scheduled to deliver on monday next, but i just got an email that they are out for delivery today
09:38 AM * roycroft will be squirting out boxes again in no time
09:39 AM roguish[m]: most snakes around here are noisy
09:40 AM roycroft: fortunately we don't have that kind of snake around here
09:40 AM roycroft: there are some rattlesnakes in centra/eastern oregon, but i don't think there are any west of the cascades
09:41 AM roycroft: possibly in extreme southern oregon, but i'm not sure about that
11:01 AM Tom_L: modem arrived a day early
11:01 AM roycroft: cool
11:01 AM roycroft: are you running fast now?
11:01 AM Tom_L: no i just got it handed to me
11:02 AM Tom_L: probably gonna wait for the router to arrive
12:35 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:45 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:46 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
12:46 PM Tom_L: mmm
12:46 PM Tom_L: soon as i got here, i lost ninnernet
01:06 PM Tom_L: call to the isp was worth it
01:06 PM Tom_L: bumped up to 250Gb from 100 free
01:06 PM roycroft: cool
01:07 PM roycroft: cable services tend to do that these days
01:07 PM Tom_L: now the router is the bottleneck
01:07 PM Tom_L: but that should be here sunday
01:08 PM Tom_L: i asked.. the last upgrade was in 2013 :)
01:08 PM Tom_L: for my equipment
01:09 PM roycroft: i have comcast
01:09 PM roycroft: they like to do annual contracts
01:09 PM Tom_L: cox
01:09 PM Tom_L: no contract
01:09 PM roycroft: the usual deal is that i sign up for the contract, they give me a price break, and a speed bump up
01:10 PM roycroft: when the contract is over, the price goes up, i contact them, sign up for another contract, the price goes down, and i get a speed bump up
01:10 PM roycroft: it's just a year at a time
01:10 PM roycroft: and the funny thing is this
01:10 PM roycroft: my boss pays for the internet connection, because i use it for work
01:10 PM Tom_L: :)
01:10 PM roycroft: he has it on auto-pay, and he pays the higher price
01:10 PM roycroft: i keep getting the price down but he keeps paying the high price
01:11 PM Tom_L: i bet they love him
01:11 PM roycroft: i've told him about this several times, but he never fixes it
01:11 PM roycroft: as a result, i have a close to $1k credit with comcast
01:11 PM roycroft: so if my boss ever stops paying for it, i get "free" internet service for a couple years or so
01:12 PM roycroft: for such a penny pincher i don't get why he does not fix the payment schedule
01:13 PM roycroft: but i've informed him enough times - i don't feel at all guilty about it
01:13 PM * roycroft has never understood procrastination
01:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'll explain it to you later
01:25 PM roycroft: if i still care by then
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hehe
03:14 PM JT-Cave: roguish[m], it was a black snake
03:14 PM mrec: Tom_L: you are using this bldc from china with the white driver box, did you notice that there's a big spark coming from the power leads if you short them?
03:15 PM mrec: (when the box is unplugged of course)
03:15 PM mrec: this for sure is not right
03:17 PM * hazzy[m] uploaded an image: (7174KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/uUiIGQqofFOVhypRcZVWbcGP/ima_7c78548.jpeg >
03:18 PM hazzy[m]: This guy showed up during a machine demo last week. He just wanted to be part of the fun
03:19 PM JT-MachineShop: hey hazzy[m]
03:20 PM hazzy[m]: JT-MachineShop: yo
03:27 PM JT-MachineShop: some kind of rat snake?
03:29 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:57 PM Tom_L: mrec, likely a capacitor discharging
03:59 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't purposely try to short them anyway
04:09 PM JT-Shop: we didn't get the 101°F forecast temperature today, maxed out at 96°F 114°F Heat Index
04:10 PM Tom_L: 99
04:11 PM Tom_L: but it's not 5 yet either
04:11 PM JT-Shop: we already dropped a degree
04:11 PM Tom_L: i haven't looked until you mentioned it
04:11 PM Tom_L: what's a good brand of gigabit switch?
04:12 PM JT-Shop: we finally got the CA dispenser valves mounted this afternoon, going to program that station tomorrow
04:12 PM Tom_L: they seem to jump from 8 to 24 port with little between
04:13 PM JT-Shop: I've ordered BV-Tech the last two times but I need POE
04:13 PM Tom_L: all i need is a simple unmanaged switch
04:13 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GAATOG
04:13 PM Tom_L: i've got a 24 port under my desk but it's 100
04:14 PM JT-Shop: I have two of those
04:14 PM Tom_L: i don't need poe
04:14 PM JT-Shop: they prob have regular switches too
04:15 PM Tom_L: i've got a 5 port but it's full
04:25 PM JT-Shop: crap I screwed up the mesact repo... no wonder the d/l failed lol
05:01 PM roycroft: you can get decent used cisco gigabit switches on ebay for a song, and they will last forever
05:02 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/154686588532
05:02 PM roycroft: as a quick example
05:07 PM TheMightyFozz: check your local second hand computer shop first. i got a 8 port gigabit switch for a tenner, last week.
05:10 PM TheMightyFozz: Speaking of switches. What's the best type of switches to use for my end stops? the machine is steel and aluminium combo, so not sure on hall sensors. but if they provide more accuracy I'll use them.
05:14 PM roycroft: i prefer mechanical switches for that kind of stuff
05:14 PM roycroft: hall sensors for soft limits, perhaps
05:16 PM JT-Shop: you would be surprised how accurate micro-switches are
05:16 PM XXCoder: I remember that guy video, testing switches etc
05:16 PM JT-Shop: unless you have servo's with encoder index you can't get any more accurate
05:16 PM XXCoder: he made an one axis machine that just repeatively triggers sensor or switches
05:17 PM roycroft: i was dubious, but i've been convinced that those cheap microswitches are repeatable to 0.001" or less
05:17 PM JT-Shop: yup
05:19 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/BLzCeH1hS9g testing switches etc. talky type, so jt you probabaly wont like
05:19 PM roycroft: admittedly, if a $2 part can take the place of a $20+ part i *want* to be convinced
05:20 PM XXCoder: roy honestly for limit only it only need to trigger and next time it turns on it will be differebt but fine
05:20 PM XXCoder: its when you want to turn it off and power it on and same setup that repeatablity with homing matters
05:20 PM JT-Shop: if you're homing to the switch you want it to repeat
05:21 PM roycroft: as far as network switches go, you may think you only need a cheap, unmanaged switch, but i am a lazy person
05:21 PM roycroft: and if i have a network problem i'd rather ping the switch and log into it to see what's up than get up and walk over to the switch to look at the lights
05:22 PM roycroft: a lot of folks use limit switches for both homing and limits
05:22 PM XXCoder: JT yeah. if you make one part per run it dont really matter all that much. larger machines that can have multiday runs with possibility of blackouts, I would demend good repeatability on homing
05:23 PM XXCoder: well that or abosulate positioning so it always know where it is ay
05:23 PM XXCoder: *at
05:23 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: On the limit switches, my mill uses the industrial version of the microswitch. They are good to a couple of um by all testing I have done. Using the index homing removes all error though.
05:23 PM XXCoder: so .001 mm?
05:24 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: Yes.
05:24 PM XXCoder: ok wanted to be sure I remembered correctly
05:25 PM * JT-Shop starts to shut down and lock up for the night
05:26 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: For network gear, I like the ubiquity stuff. Mostly because the old cisco gear is usually loud as hell.
05:27 PM XXCoder: 8:40 have repeatability chart. interesting
05:28 PM roycroft: you're correct that the cisco stuff can be loud
05:28 PM roycroft: my reply to that is that my cisco gear lives in rooms that are not normally inhabited by humans, so i don't much care :)
05:28 PM roycroft: and yeah, my cat hangs out in the server room sometimes
05:28 PM roycroft: but i don't force her to
05:28 PM ZincBoy[CAON][m]: All good then 🙂
05:29 PM roycroft: so again i don't care :)
05:29 PM TheMightyFozz: thanks, I will watch that. (as soon as i email it to a computer with speakers attached.
05:29 PM XXCoder: or turn on captions :)
05:33 PM TheMightyFozz: could do. but this room is enough reading for me after trying to read LinuxCNC manual and FreeCAD manual.. my brain has melted.
05:33 PM XXCoder: lol ok
05:37 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what's wrong with the repo?
05:59 PM TheMightyFozz: capacitive
06:00 PM TheMightyFozz: sorry, wrong computer. two keyboards is confusing... ...guess what i'm reasearching!
06:03 PM Tom_L: chokes?
06:03 PM Tom_L: :)
06:04 PM TheMightyFozz: are capacitive sensors a good choice for linuxCNC limit/home switches?
06:05 PM Tom_L: i don't recall seeing any
06:06 PM TheMightyFozz: I'm saying this because my cnc build would be easy to alter for these. I can drill a hole and stick it in. also the sensitivity can be adjusted by a screw on the back.
06:10 PM TheMightyFozz: https://realpars.com/capacitive-sensor/ Is the wiring just like a normal switch. (half way down the page.)
06:12 PM XXCoder: if you plan to use those, be sure to get good ones
06:13 PM XXCoder: and make sure its not accessable by chips
06:13 PM XXCoder: we had office mills crash because chips got into column with sensor and trigged it too early
06:14 PM TheMightyFozz: I bought one for my Creality printer. its fantastic.
06:14 PM XXCoder: thinking it was at z zero, it lowered just a little for toolchange, but it was way too low and tool corsel crashed into it
06:14 PM XXCoder: I told everyone to never spray air anywhere but very table itself
06:14 PM XXCoder: it lasted a lot longer but then someone didnt listen and anotehr office mill crashed
06:15 PM XXCoder: just bad design
06:15 PM TheMightyFozz: OH and today I got 35 sheets (1ft x 2ft x .25in (with a small hole in the middle.)) of acrylic sheet for free. I am BUZZING.
06:15 PM XXCoder: fozz yeah it works, just keep it in mind that metal chips can trigger sensor also :D
06:15 PM TheMightyFozz: clear too
06:15 PM XXCoder: whoa
06:16 PM XXCoder: few thousand dollar worth of arylics ;)
06:17 PM XXCoder: foz one you linked to can react to pretty much everything. which means chips is a concern for any material. keep in mind
06:18 PM TheMightyFozz: I know. it was sitting outside an engineering shop. they said it was packaging from a client they used to have... ...also laughed and said its not metal, what do we want that for.... .....i gave them a fiver for a bit of aluminium. i would feel guilty but... ..but i dont.
06:19 PM XXCoder: yeah 1/4 thick sheets dang
06:21 PM TheMightyFozz: im in the uk so its actually 12mm but still. i looked up the price and my jaw hit the ground. the plastic covering is still on it. the only annoying thing is the hole. but its free, cant complain.
06:22 PM TheMightyFozz: so XXCoder what would you use for limit switches?
06:23 PM XXCoder: not sure, mine dont have any lol (I just manually push axes to max then start)
06:24 PM TheMightyFozz: hahaha
06:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: TheMightyFozz: if kept clean
06:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and get them at a low price, they tend to be on the expensive side vs few $$ mechanical limit switch
06:44 PM skunkworks: put lineageos on my pixel 3xl... Ended up taking it off and putting stock android back on. So much stuff was broken.
06:45 PM XXCoder: its still too har to make custom android for device. so many stuff is protected behind binary blobs
06:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I really don't mind Linux on a mobile device
06:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i never use the android apps
06:47 PM XXCoder: android is java on linux ;)
06:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: someone here is using Sailfish
06:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they ordered a phone with it pre-installed
06:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm going to use gentoo for my car pc
06:51 PM XXCoder: oh the edm "lathe" come up in hack a day
06:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm waiting for mobile starlink
06:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they got FCC approval
06:51 PM XXCoder: nice
06:52 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/05/spacex-adds-25-portability-monthly-fee-for-starlink-service.html
06:55 PM XXCoder: one move a month? meh
06:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah
06:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: t-mobile 5G "customers may notice speeds lower than other customers and further reduction if using >50GB/mo., due to data prioritization. Video typically streams on smartphone/tablet at DVD quality (480p)" $40/mo
06:56 PM Tom_itx: that's an improvement. 259gb down 12 up
06:56 PM XXCoder: i pay 35 usd a month on my google fi phone
06:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and $50mo get throttled >100GB
06:56 PM XXCoder: 6 gb at $10 a month then unlimited and slower
06:56 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
06:57 PM XXCoder: erm $10 a gb
06:57 PM Tom_L: mb. not gb
06:57 PM Tom_L: i wish :)
06:57 PM XXCoder: its gb for me
06:57 PM Tom_L: speed not storage
06:58 PM XXCoder: uh im talking about data usage, not speed nor storage?
06:58 PM Tom_L: well ok.
06:59 PM XXCoder: 5g speed, it dont matter to me as I dont use all that much data
06:59 PM XXCoder: I hate watching videos on phone for example
07:00 PM XXCoder: anyway yeah google fi is pretty good deal for light data users
07:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I would just use the phone as a modem/hub
07:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 5G phone --> car PC
07:01 PM XXCoder: capt yeah, though I would go for unlimited data first also
07:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: home is sleep, work is business internet and big screens
07:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but with 5G phone, home can also use the phone as a modem/hub
07:03 PM roycroft: data are overrated
07:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Linux updates use maybe a few GB a month, unless you cache/mirror locally and update from local
07:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: downloading movies and games are the big data hogs
07:04 PM roycroft: and you can always go back to the ascii pr0n of the '70s and '80s
07:04 PM XXCoder: if you has bunch of computers, all with same os, you can do clever part and cache so it downloads only once
07:04 PM XXCoder: roy lol
07:05 PM XXCoder: stiff forward slash :P
07:05 PM roycroft: retro is always faddish
07:06 PM roycroft: i used to mirror the debian distro, because we had so many in-house machines running debian
07:06 PM roycroft: by "so many" i mean 30-50
07:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what speeds do users get at free wifi locations like charbucks and similar?
07:07 PM roycroft: at the end of the day, keeping the mirror current turned out to be at least as much work as just going to the canonical sites all the time
07:07 PM roycroft: i have no idea, as i do not go to places like that generally
07:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I tend to use wifi at hospitals and similar for android updates
07:08 PM roycroft: my printer parts just arrived
07:08 PM XXCoder: capt I wouldnt trust those much at all. some can be faked
07:08 PM XXCoder: yay
07:08 PM roycroft: i have to go meet friends for dinner now, but i should be squirting boxes again later on this evening
07:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I tend to get 5-10mb/s rates
07:08 PM TheMightyFozz: I remember getting coding magazines with my brother and writing our own zxspectrum games. no downloading needed.
07:08 PM roycroft: just in time, as that mega spool of filament from atomic will arrive tomorrow
07:09 PM XXCoder: roy, remember, lift with knees
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: I'm not too worried about android phone hacks
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm not the only root account anyway
07:09 PM roycroft: yeah, i don't do that
07:10 PM roycroft: lift with forklift is a lot better
07:10 PM roycroft: :)
07:10 PM XXCoder: capt not what I was thinking of. some company free wifi is actually faked and setup by hacker to try log logins and such
07:10 PM XXCoder: roy good lol
07:10 PM roycroft: because lifting 2.5kg might give me a hernia
07:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: logins on a phone? to what?
07:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I treat my phone like a public toilet
07:12 PM XXCoder: roy my 3d printer plastic rolls is ready also https://media.istockphoto.com/photos/large-wooden-bobbins-with-cable-wire-against-factory-warehouse-picture-id1272782671?k=20&m=1272782671&s=612x612&w=0&h=RRwdznP6R_EtB7njAZzE7t1xk21_cUcJex07Lr_2t7w=
07:12 PM XXCoder: capt any website you would need to login at, like gmail etc but ok
07:13 PM TheMightyFozz: damn thats some big filament, :-D
07:13 PM XXCoder: lol
07:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you get strange emails from my gmail, it may or may not be me :)
07:16 PM XXCoder: what you didnt win few million dollars and offering me 1M usd?
07:16 PM XXCoder: with little bit of release fees?
07:34 PM TheMightyFozz: Hey looks like we all know the same prince! :-D
07:41 PM XXCoder: lol
08:05 PM skunkworks: CaptHindsight[m]: parents still love starlink
08:12 PM VladimirPuTim[m]: I think through what I need
08:12 PM VladimirPuTim[m]: likely a hardinge HVL than a precision CNC
08:13 PM VladimirPuTim[m]: well then maybe Ill make it a LCNC lather
08:13 PM VladimirPuTim[m]: s/lather/lathe/
08:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I sent you a check for the wrong amount, it was $2k too much, can you sand me back only the $2k, thanks!
08:38 PM Tom_L: i will send you $2k worth of credit
08:40 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: did you see... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzk0wM1HERY
08:46 PM XXCoder: nice
08:51 PM Tom_L: cool
08:53 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, what did you use to generate the path?
08:55 PM Tom_L: new to 2.9
09:16 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: autocad... (transposing y to z...)
09:16 PM skunkworks: it was a short profile - maybe 10 points?)
09:16 PM Tom_L: yeah i had to do that once for andy
09:17 PM skunkworks: https://electronicsam.com/images/emco/PXL_20220715_015739507.jpg
09:17 PM skunkworks: worked good
09:17 PM Tom_L: had to import some file into my mill package and convert it so it would work on the lathe package
09:17 PM Tom_L: looks good
09:18 PM roycroft: i guess it's time to set up for some squirtin' action
09:18 PM skunkworks: yes - I was trying to see if I could rotate the coordinate system in x-z and gave up (acad 12)
09:18 PM * roycroft hopes his printing woes are over for a while
09:19 PM Tom_L: i'd never used the lathe package prior to that
09:19 PM Tom_L: so it was kindof a learning experience
09:21 PM Tom_L: i don't remember if his was front or rear tool but i do remember i had to reverse that
09:23 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oye3BxqXKmw
09:24 PM Tom_L: probably could have taken alot more per pass but didn't wanna chance it
09:36 PM mrec: Tom_L: but the leads? They are supposed to be safe
10:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAZFZ-QKWYg
10:08 PM roycroft: it's time to squirt a box
10:08 PM * roycroft hopes it works
10:08 PM XXCoder: lol
10:08 PM XXCoder: yeah
10:09 PM roycroft: i had to destroy the old heater block
10:09 PM roycroft: i used some anti-sieze on the screws that hold the heating element and thermister in this time
10:11 PM roycroft: it claims to be printing
10:11 PM * roycroft heads out to check on it
10:13 PM roycroft: so far so good
