12:12 AM Thorhian7490[m]: I tried watching his channel earlier on. Too many dirty references for me despite his interesting projects.
12:20 AM roycroft: whose channel?
12:29 AM XXCoder: might be the livecaption thing video I linked
12:29 AM XXCoder: Thorhian7490[m]: am I right?
12:57 AM roycroft: it says "this video isn't available anymore"
12:57 AM XXCoder: man thats weird
12:57 AM XXCoder: it still works for me
12:57 AM roycroft: yeah, and it seems to work for others
01:46 AM randy: morning
01:49 AM Deejay: moin
04:55 AM Tom_L: morning
05:16 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:19 AM tcurdt: Does anyone have the pinouts for the 7i92. I don't find the manual to be clear on this. Is this right? https://imgur.com/a/2wCpmx3
09:50 AM JT-Shop2: my Mesa Configuration Tool has lots of info and can create your configuration files https://www.gnipsel.com/mesa/mesact/index.html
09:51 AM JT-Shop2: don't want to look at your imgur because it loads way too much stuff
09:52 AM JT-Shop2: https://imagebin.ca/
09:55 AM tcurdt: JT-Shop2 yeah, imagur is horrible ... didn't know that imagebin .... https://imagebin.ca/v/6hh1gXhgJQGQ
10:02 AM JT-Shop: just installing the latest version of my mesa tool
10:02 AM JT-Shop: and it's so easy now, just a click away
10:03 AM tcurdt: it shows the pinouts?
10:03 AM tcurdt: or wasn't directed at me? :)
10:05 AM JT-Shop: it shows the firmware pin assignments for each connector, the manual shows what each pin does
10:05 AM JT-Shop: my tool shows the card
10:07 AM JT-Shop: looks like your photo is correct
10:08 AM roycroft: it's friday eve!
10:10 AM JT-Shop: it's friday here!
10:12 AM JT-Shop: tcurdt, on the IDC 26 connector the upper left one is pin 1
10:12 AM roycroft: well i'm a bit behind you
10:12 AM JT-Shop: going to be a great day here tomorrow so no work for me cause I'm retired sorta
10:13 AM JT-Shop: what is a safe way to round over a piece of wood 1/4" or so square
10:13 AM tcurdt: JT-Shop so as shown in my image ... pin1 IO17
10:14 AM tcurdt: right?
10:14 AM JT-Shop: yep
10:14 AM JT-Shop: of course what the pin does depends on the firmware installed
10:15 AM JT-Shop: which my tool will flash the card and show you what each pin is assigned to
10:26 AM * JT-Shop2 is pleased with the handle now
10:26 AM roguish[m]: JT-Shop: geeze JT. gettting pretty fancy with your software tools............
10:27 AM roguish[m]: how are those gcode utilities coming along?
10:27 AM roguish[m]: love to put those in QTDragon GUI
10:28 AM JT-Shop: have you looked at the Mesa Configuration tool lately?
10:29 AM roguish[m]: that's what I just did..............wow
10:31 AM JT-Shop: I had epiphany a while back working on the 7i92 tool when I added the 5i25 it suddenly clicked how to put the all together into one
10:31 AM JT-Shop: I've not worked on the g code tools in a long time, they work for me
10:34 AM JT-Shop: I need people to use it and give me feedback, I saw something that needs fixing this morning
10:38 AM roguish[m]: I'm running the QtDragon gui, slightly modified. it's pretty nice. has 2 utilities: a bolt circle drilling, and a simple facing routine.
10:44 AM JT-Cave: did you press the Documents button on my tool?
10:45 AM JT-Cave: I have a bunch of routines including thread milling in mine
10:46 AM roguish[m]: yeah, i've seen it.
10:51 AM * JT-Cave thinks it's time to clean out the dust baths then have a lunch minute
10:51 AM roguish[m]: doing a little work on the house. i pulled my 2 old wall furnaces out and now am patching the very large holes in the walls. 1 wasn't too bad, the 2nd has been dreadfull. really jimmy-jacked into a previous exterior wall.
10:52 AM roguish[m]: today it's sheetrock day. I hate doing sheetrock.
10:53 AM CloudEvil: 'Just put your little hod in mine'
10:53 AM CloudEvil: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD2ZC11pPPQ&t=1s )
11:02 AM roycroft: sheetrock is my least favorite of the building trades in which i've ever engaged
11:02 AM roycroft: it ranks down with plumbing repair
11:19 AM CloudEvil: All of the common wall finishes pretty much suck
11:22 AM CloudEvil: Then again, perhaps you should ignore me, as I have semi-seriously considered the use of precision ground AAC block hotglued together for construction.
11:28 AM roycroft: while i would not want to engage in installing it, i really like plaster (not sheetrock)
11:28 AM roycroft: it's pretty unaffordable these days, though, as it's so labor intensive to install
11:40 AM XXCoder: ow hell of a grinder crash https://www.reddit.com/r/Machinists/comments/ut2yye/managed_to_record_a_scary_crash_on_the_big/
11:48 AM djdelorie: and so it begins: https://www.delorie.com/photos/cnc2/PXL_20220519_161827405.html
11:52 AM roycroft: you have finaly started your collection of shipping boxes?
11:52 AM CloudEvil: Note that very high res photos can accidentally dox yourself
11:54 AM djdelorie: CloudEvil: my address is on my web site already. I'm not that interesting.
11:54 AM CloudEvil: :)
11:54 AM djdelorie: roycroft: it's a cnc router kit. I've got the spindle and mesa card already, still working on the electronics
11:54 AM CloudEvil: It's comedic how much accidental detail can be in casual shots these days.
11:57 AM roycroft: i'm very good about removing shipping labels as soon as a parcel arrives
11:58 AM djdelorie: easy enough to just replace the big photo with the smaller one :-)
11:59 AM djdelorie: roycroft: I expected another month before delivery but it seems the supply chain is recovering, at least a little
11:59 AM roycroft: that would be nice
11:59 AM roycroft: i'm hoping to start ordering more components for my cnc router in a month or so
12:00 PM CloudEvil: :)
12:00 PM CloudEvil: For delivery 2024?
12:01 PM roycroft: i want to build it this summer
12:01 PM djdelorie: 16 weeks estimated lead time turned out to be 12
12:02 PM roycroft: extrusions would be the main thing that might not be readily available
12:03 PM roycroft: linear rails and bearing trucks seem fairly available
12:03 PM roycroft: but i'll find out when the time comes, i guess
12:03 PM djdelorie: there's still a shipment from Avid with all the non-extrusion bits, but that's delayed on purpose so I have time to inspect the extrusions
12:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: CloudEvil: I purposely leave surprises in the backgrounds for people to find
12:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or in reflections
12:23 PM CloudEvil: :)
01:00 PM roguish[m]: well shit howdy. got the sheetrock cut and in place. i'll tape tomorrow. only so much energy for that kinda work.
01:02 PM roguish[m]: gotta find a bit of baseboard to match the current.
01:06 PM * roycroft will be installing more drawer slides on his lunch break
01:51 PM roycroft: for those of you who have wordpress websites, 6.0 will be released next week, and heaps of plugins will not be compatible
01:51 PM roycroft: i strongly recommend disabling auto-updates, for a while at least
02:05 PM * travis_farmer853 uploaded an image: (1024KiB) < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/jauriarts.org/LTNkMHWIGMyEdmoproKxzDKk/20210723_160958.jpg >
02:05 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: Link to some details of the conversion I did: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/30-cnc-machines/41503-retrofit-of-a-hitachi-seike-vk45-mill?start=0
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: that control cabinet is SO much cleaner looking than mine...
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: i really need to learn some wire organization skills 😉
02:05 PM c101horse8332[m]: get some cable trays
02:05 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: Thanks but cable trays hide a myriad of sins 🙂 I was lucky as the modern controls are much smaller than the 1980s stuff I pulled out. Doing a neat wiring job requires you have enough space and it is always more than you expect.
02:05 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: Wire ferules are 100% worth it. Makes for much more reliable wiring. A 500 pack of small zip ties would clean up your wiring nicely. I started labeling every wire but lost energy and only labeled the ones that were exited the cabinet. A decision I regret every time I have to debug something.
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: plenty of space, but loads of random wires everywhere...
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: i like the use of wire ferules and numbering every wire. i will have to implement that...
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: true, but the wires are random length, so even bundling them would look chaotic. i really need to re-doo everything, little by little, and properly. could be a complete re-wire, or just partial, but i hesitate, cause it works now... 😉
02:05 PM c101horse8332[m]: jam em in, close the lid, call it a day
02:05 PM travis_farmer853: i think that would result in a debugging nightmare 😉
02:06 PM travis_farmer853: thankfully, mine is not Wordpress, but is PHP 😉
02:14 PM djdelorie: my plan is to use heat-shrink labels in the labelmaker to label the wires
02:15 PM djdelorie: and ferules of course
02:51 PM roycroft: i like to label every wire in a control panel
02:51 PM roycroft: i have this nice epson labeler now that prints on shrink tubing, so it's pretty easy to do the labeling
02:57 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/ControlPanelWiring/
02:57 PM roycroft: that's the control panel for my brew system
02:57 PM roycroft: i wired that before i got the shrink tube labeler, but i still labeled everything
02:59 PM roycroft: i used my panduit labeler for that, with wrap-around labels
03:00 PM roycroft: you can see a strip of them in the middle of the first picture, just above the contactor labeled "hlt contactor"
03:02 PM roycroft: and as tom_l has brought this up before, i'm sure he'll appreciate that every connector from the chassis to the front panel is different, so it is impossible to accidently cross-connect things
03:02 PM roycroft: plus, they're all labeled
03:04 PM * roycroft knows that when designing things for himself it's important to idiot-proof them, since he knows who the user is
03:04 PM * djdelorie writes comments in code as if I'll forget what I was thinking in a few years
03:04 PM XXCoder: lol indeed. I'm same
03:05 PM XXCoder: years? I'd assume month for me ;)
03:05 PM roycroft: i usualy forget right after dinner
03:06 PM djdelorie: worst case was when I searched google for an answer to a weird issue in gcc internals, only to find the answer in an email from me to the list a decade previous
03:06 PM roycroft: i got the rest of my cabinets installed at lunch today, and the ash edge banding has oil varnish on it
03:06 PM roycroft: i started installing more drawer slides, but i ran into a row that was not drilled straight
03:06 PM roycroft: i don't know how that happened, but it was right before the end of my lunch break, so i just quit there
03:07 PM roycroft: i have a bit of time to decide how to fill the holes, and i have a pretty good idea how i'll redrill them in the correct position
03:07 PM djdelorie: I've been pre-drilling drawer slide holes on the cnc. Always straight
03:07 PM XXCoder: whats funny is I recently had to repair one of kitchen drawer bars
03:07 PM roycroft: i don't have a cnc router yet
03:07 PM XXCoder: it slowly warped across 3 years with heavu load so I de-warped em
03:07 PM roycroft: but i really should have built it before building these cabinets - i had to drill over 2000 holes in them
03:08 PM roycroft: the cabinets will make my shop work a lot more efficiently, and i made the call to build them before the cnc router, anticpating the router build would go faster if i did that
03:08 PM roycroft: and it will
03:08 PM roycroft: but the cabinet build is going a lot slower without a cnc router
03:09 PM roycroft: anyway, i looked over the other cabinets and i'm pretty sure this is the only row of holes that were misdrilled
03:11 PM CloudEvil: :)
03:23 PM Tom_L: i took a different approach since i didn't have a fancy labeler etc and didn't purchase new wire for the cabinet
03:24 PM Tom_L: made a chart of every wire, wire color and pin name etc that it went to
03:24 PM roycroft: that works
03:24 PM Tom_L: and if it changed color due to a cable like the pendant i followed the color change as well
03:24 PM roycroft: it's a method commonly used in automotive wiring schematics
03:25 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/configs/NEW_MILL_SHOP_2.8.2/New_Mill_IO_Pinout.pdf
03:27 PM Tom_L: easy to update too
03:33 PM Tom_L: djdelorie, yes i've looked at my code 10 yrs later and appreciate it's comments
03:37 PM roycroft: there is that famous comment in the 6th edition unix source that says "you are not meant to understand this"
03:38 PM roycroft: er, "you are not expected to understand this"
03:41 PM XXCoder: nice plastic dye video https://youtu.be/tBwRRgApYyg
03:41 PM XXCoder: though that wasting of water is really annoying
04:33 PM * JT-Shop2 made a black walnut handle for his Manna Pro 14.8CC measuring cup
04:57 PM JT-Shop2: went to home depot web site and it was a spoof page saying to call support I've been locked out of my pc
05:03 PM XXCoder: geez
05:03 PM XXCoder: either they got hacked or you got some malware
05:04 PM XXCoder: or you did one of common mispellings
05:06 PM JT-Shop2: prob the latter
05:07 PM TurBoss: 😲
05:07 PM JT-Shop2: I'm on a linux pc here
05:07 PM XXCoder: same
05:07 PM * JT-Shop2 gets back to the coon lock
05:16 PM roycroft: i think i'll go pick up the plywood for my drawer bottoms now
05:16 PM roycroft: i want to make them before the drawers themselves, so i can pre-finish them before installing them
05:17 PM travis_farmer853: good idea
05:18 PM XXCoder: yeah better seal too
05:20 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop2, windows or linux?
05:20 PM Tom_L: mmm nevermind... i finished reading
05:20 PM JT-Shop2: lol
05:20 PM * JT-Shop2 goes to make some chicken crack
05:21 PM Tom_L: takes a while ya know...
05:45 PM JT-Shop2: to make chicken crack
05:45 PM JT-Shop2: ?
05:50 PM Tom_L: no, to catch up on reading when ya don't have your reading specs on
05:51 PM JT-Shop2: I'm just pulling your leg
06:01 PM roycroft: well that was a good move on my part
06:01 PM roycroft: the plywood i need is on sale at jerry's through the 27th
06:01 PM roycroft: they had a huge stack of it - probably 250 sheets - just the other day
06:01 PM JT-Shop2: nice
06:02 PM roycroft: i needed 7 sheets, and when i went there today they were down to 12 sheets, three of which were damaged
06:02 PM roycroft: it's "1/4" plywood
06:03 PM JT-Shop2: how thick is it really?
06:03 PM roycroft: it looked a little thin, and i assumed it was really 5mm
06:03 PM roycroft: which is fine, as i have a 5mm router cutter
06:03 PM roycroft: but it actally measures 4.6mm
06:03 PM roycroft: which i still think is fine
06:03 PM roycroft: but that stuff seems to get thinner every year
06:03 PM JT-Shop2: wow that's not even close to 1/4"
06:03 PM Tom_L: just wet it, it will fit fine :)
06:03 PM roycroft: not even remotely close
06:04 PM Tom_L: for a while
06:04 PM roycroft: if i cut 5mm slots for it, at 4.6mm thick it will fit great
06:04 PM roycroft: just enough wiggle room to make it easy to insert
06:05 PM roycroft: i can get actual 1/4" birch plywood, but it would cost me over $100/sheet
06:05 PM roycroft: this stuff was on sale for $29.99
06:05 PM XXCoder: someday you'd need to buy 2 inch plywoods if you need 1/4
06:05 PM roycroft: it's not hard to learn to live with it
06:05 PM Tom_L: 2 x 4 = 1 x 3
06:05 PM XXCoder: roy it got some kind of support in middle?
06:06 PM roycroft: no, but the drawers are not really wide
06:06 PM roycroft: it should be fine
06:06 PM XXCoder: wide, or deep. ok
06:06 PM roycroft: yeah, i get how dimensional lumber is smaller than nomimal size
06:06 PM roycroft: making it flat and square is a subtractive process
06:06 PM roycroft: but plywood is an additive process
06:07 PM XXCoder: used to be the case, but they sell warpy wood as "already flattened and squared" size
06:07 PM Tom_L: s2s would thin it even more
06:07 PM roycroft: and i even get how 1/4" plywood became 6mm plywood, and even how that became 5mm plywood
06:07 PM roycroft: but 4.6mm is taking it a bit too far
06:08 PM roycroft: i still buy most of my hardwood rough
06:08 PM roycroft: i don't like to pay the premium for s2s
06:08 PM XXCoder: someday you can see though 1/4 inch plywood
06:08 PM roycroft: and i get more usable lumber out of rough stock anyway
06:09 PM roycroft: anyway, i have everything i need to make drawers in my van now, except the material for the drawer fronts
06:09 PM roycroft: but i install the drawer fronts after the drawers are installed anyway
06:32 PM * JT-Shop2 calls it a day
06:33 PM JT-Shop2: tornado watch till 7pm here
06:35 PM Tom_L: seems the weather has been more angry this year
06:35 PM XXCoder: more heat each year lately
06:36 PM Tom_L: tornado here followed the same path as in 91 within a few hundred yards
06:36 PM Tom_L: oh btw, recall that video i posted of the tornado flinging the container around?
06:37 PM Tom_L: i saw the shipping container the other day on the side of the road.. or at least what was left of it
06:40 PM XXCoder: steal it and make a storage
06:44 PM Tom_L: don't think i could straighten it out enough
06:46 PM XXCoder: bigger hammer
07:25 PM roycroft: turn it into an artisan storage facility
07:59 PM roguish[m]: chow time......bbt
08:23 PM roycroft: so i got lucky with those misdrilled holes
08:23 PM roycroft: they were so far off that only the first three would interfere with the correct positioning
08:24 PM roycroft: i filled those with some gel epoxy, and tomrrow i'll be able to drill them all a bit more accurately
08:24 PM XXCoder: lol so badly off that its easily fixable
08:24 PM roycroft: yes :)
08:24 PM roycroft: i have no idea how that happened
08:24 PM roycroft: the rear alignment pin must have slipped out of its hole
08:24 PM XXCoder: possible
08:24 PM roycroft: but how i did not notice is what is baffling
08:25 PM XXCoder: after that many holes? eh
08:25 PM roycroft: yeah, i think it was towards the end
08:25 PM roycroft: it's going to be a lot harder drilling them vertically than when the panels were flat on the bench
08:25 PM roycroft: but it will work
08:46 PM XXCoder: should be
08:59 PM rene-dev59 is now known as rene-dev5
09:50 PM XXCoder: ...
09:50 PM XXCoder: seems haas is selling tools
09:50 PM XXCoder: like calipers, mic, etc
09:59 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: High markup I am sure.
10:01 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: Actually doesn't look too bad. At least for the probe stylus. $60 and I have been buying them for more than that on aliexpress.
10:04 PM XXCoder: $60 is for what?
10:05 PM XXCoder: one of pictured items, or all of em or what
10:05 PM XXCoder: https://preview.redd.it/800fve0zaj091.jpg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=964718b032c0aab3235c9ac22c59380017fe379a
10:06 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: For the ceramic/ruby stylus (probe tip). They tend to be consumable when the probe hits something.
10:06 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: https://www.haascnc.com/haas-tooling/measuring_inspection/06-0439.html
10:07 PM XXCoder: ahh https://www.haascnc.com/haas-tooling/measuring_inspection.html
10:07 PM XXCoder: 350 usd for everything pictured/ interesting
10:08 PM Tom_L: ZincBoy[CAON]066, have you compared: https://www.carbideprobes.com/
10:12 PM ZincBoy[CAON]066: That is a good resource. They have the stylus I use for $50 so lower than anywhere else I have found.
10:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/265698139120
10:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: deal of the week ^^^
10:13 PM XXCoder: you haul it off
10:13 PM djdelorie: what, no free shipping? ;-)
10:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there was a mazak i saw earlier , shipping was $5.95
10:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/144460979233
10:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh sorry Shipping:
10:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: US $5.20 Standard Shipping
10:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/203949941032 :)
10:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: will they carry it up to the 2nd floor or is that only to my dooray?
10:16 PM djdelorie: USPS too. If it fits, it ships.
10:16 PM XXCoder: $5.50! I expect them to carry it in and position it for me for that price
10:18 PM XXCoder: pretty cool https://www.ebay.com/itm/374082379785
10:19 PM XXCoder: gonna love chineseium labeling "milling and drilling metal wood lathe"
10:19 PM XXCoder: https://www.ebay.com/itm/264856945613
10:19 PM Tom_L: ZincBoy[CAON]066, i've used them a couple times and they seem good
10:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the column is square at least, in theory
10:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: vs this drill press https://www.ebay.com/itm/265399051587
