05:00 AM Tom_L: morning
05:14 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:17 AM Tom_L: 64F out already
05:18 AM JT-Cave: 41°F here
05:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:29 AM _unreal_: wholy shit its cool here. 56f
07:29 AM _unreal_: and for april...?
10:36 AM acer is now known as _unreal_
10:36 AM _unreal_: been doing cad all morning. FINALLY just solved my X/Y axis interface rebuild
10:37 AM _unreal_: it should be VERY strong
10:37 AM _unreal_: just need to order some new MGN15C cars :( $60
10:38 AM _unreal_: but at least it will give me 5" of z
11:35 AM perry_j1987: nice
11:35 AM perry_j1987: whats the C
11:39 AM _unreal_: car type
11:39 AM _unreal_: err
11:39 AM _unreal_: carriage
11:40 AM _unreal_: so MGN15C are the smaller versions the H are the larger versions, the large one's are like 2" long the short one's are like 32wx30L
11:41 AM _unreal_: would rather have large carriage. I do have 2 larger one's so I may just swap in 2 for the main load set which ride at the bottom on the z
11:42 AM _unreal_: at this point YET AGAIN.. I'm going to be using my current small cnc machine to make parts for the new cnc machine
11:43 AM _unreal_: I've already used it to make a bunch of parts. but at this point. I'm going to be making some good sized major parts that come close to maxing out my current cnc machine. ALL aluminum work as well
11:43 AM _unreal_: going to mill the Y arms from a big plate I have
11:44 AM _unreal_: With any luck when I get this machine working finally and "rigid" :S I may be able to mill the parts for the machine I was GOING to build.
11:44 AM _unreal_: that will use STEEL Y arms
11:44 AM _unreal_: lot of steel. and I have all of the material just no way to cut it
11:44 AM _unreal_: with super precision
11:45 AM _unreal_: I have some nice NICE .5" plate steel
11:45 AM _unreal_: that bastard I want to build the big cnc machine with. that build which I have most of the parts for will be equal to or larger then my laser etcher. THAT will be a real money maker for me.
11:46 AM _unreal_: then again. I'm still waiting on the @#$%!@#%$#@ stock market. SOOOOOOOOO much f'ing fraud going on. I cant wait till it blows up.
11:46 AM _unreal_: going to make thousands
11:54 AM Loetmichel_: hmm, cleaing up the room is funny. now i am looking at a stack of 18 partial full spools and open of 3d-printer filament. :)
12:02 PM _unreal_: open of 3d-printer filiment?
12:05 PM _unreal_: This should be nice a rigid when I build the damn thing
12:05 PM _unreal_: still sucks the original setup I had. failed sigh....
12:05 PM _unreal_: so much time/work
12:07 PM _unreal_: and what is worse. a lead screw that was built/paid for at a set size.
12:07 PM _unreal_: now I have to "build" around that one aspect :(
12:16 PM _unreal_: Not a big problem but not a fun problem :S
12:19 PM Loetmichel_: _unreal_: yep
12:20 PM Loetmichel_: the "neeed another colour. Well, where did the old partial spool vanish? lets use a new one!"
12:24 PM _unreal_: the disappearing spool is typically ON the machine ;)
12:44 PM Loetmichel_: ... and found them a few months later when cleaning up the hobby room
01:03 PM * roycroft still has not finished his filament cabinet, which he needs to avoid loetmichel_'s problem
03:16 PM andypugh: I have been using my milling machine for several years. Probably 10. And today was the first time that I noticed that the horizontal spindle config has the Y axis reversed.
03:17 PM andypugh: So now I have to remember how to invert an axis on a servo machine.
03:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: andypugh: here some of your advice on this https://forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuration/30994-changing-servo-axis-direction
03:29 PM andypugh: Ah, yes but, I don’t use those iNI entries, it’s all in the HAL. And to confuse matters further I am using resolvers and software motor commutation with the bldc component.
03:30 PM andypugh: I think I can reverse the axis, it’t the homing (and, specifically, not getting stuck on the end stops when testing) that has me concerned.
03:34 PM andypugh: kinematics=trivkins coordinates=xzya :-)
03:36 PM XXCoder: doh
03:43 PM Tom_L: when i was setting my limits i set the table in the middle and triggered the switches by hand until i was sure they were going the right direction
03:44 PM Tom_L: if they're hard to get to that may not be possible
03:45 PM andypugh: My limits are inductive proxes embedded in the ways. I can’t even see them.
03:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: trigger them where they connect to the Mesa IO
03:45 PM Tom_L: that may be a problem then
03:46 PM Tom_L: or what capn said
03:46 PM andypugh: Does anyone have a diagram of the conventional axis directions for a horizontal spindle?
03:47 PM Tom_L: https://faculty.etsu.edu/hemphill/entc3710/nc-prog/images/Fig02-02.gif
03:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://cadem.com/cnc-axes-directions-hmcs/
03:48 PM andypugh: Yes, I found that one, it’s the first hit on Google. it’s a) rubbish and b) doesn’t label x + and x-
03:49 PM andypugh: This one isn’t a right-handed coordinate system: https://res.cloudinary.com/engineering-com/image/upload/Okuma_-_MU-10000H_yhulo9.jpg
03:49 PM Tom_L: so maybe it depends on the machine
03:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yes, contradictions
03:50 PM Tom_L: once the post is set up you don't have to worry with it too much
03:50 PM andypugh: looking down the spindle you either have X+ left and Y+ away from the gorund, or X+ right and Y+ down.
03:51 PM andypugh: Tom_L: That’s exactly the problem. the posts all assume a right-handed coordinate system.
03:52 PM Tom_L: which is easier to fix?
03:52 PM andypugh: That Okuma picture is exactly how my machine is configured, and it’s wrong :-)
03:54 PM Tom_L: one of my Okuma posts says Sign of movement to the right on horizontal axis: Positive
03:54 PM Tom_L: Sign of movement Up on vertical axis: Positive
03:55 PM andypugh: That doesn’t really say where you are looking from, or even which letter the vertical axis is...
03:56 PM Tom_L: it is confusing...
03:56 PM Tom_L: generally on a horizontal the vertical axis will be Y
03:56 PM Tom_L: but i'm sure there's always a problem child
03:57 PM Tom_L: facing the machine when you stretch your arms out is generally X
03:58 PM Tom_L: that holds true on most machines unless it's a gantry
03:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://faculty.etsu.edu/hemphill/entc3710/nc-prog/images/Fig02-02.gif this is opposite every description for the Z axis
03:58 PM andypugh: But with a horizontal you are looking at the opposite end of the spindle.
03:58 PM Tom_L: yes
03:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: motion towards the spindle is always + Z, except in this drawing
03:59 PM Tom_L: that also holds true on most horizontal machines
03:59 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight[m]: That’s wrong too, as far as I can tell.
04:00 PM andypugh: My question is whether Y points up or down :-)
04:00 PM Tom_L: i would define that to say a motion upwards from the tool tip in Z is positive
04:00 PM andypugh: I think I will go for Y up and reverse X
04:00 PM Tom_L: andypugh, i honestly would set it up like you would a regular Z for your Y
04:00 PM Tom_L: Y+ is up
04:01 PM andypugh: And that means rversing X
04:01 PM Tom_L: so X+ would be to your right facing the machine?
04:01 PM andypugh: Which is fine.
04:02 PM andypugh: X+ would be left facing tha machine. X+ would be right if looking down the spindle bore.
04:02 PM Tom_L: now you got me wondering if mine is backwards...
04:03 PM Tom_L: i'm not going to change it since the post works great
04:03 PM andypugh: It’spossible, it’s taken me 10 years to notice.
04:03 PM Tom_L: heh
04:03 PM Tom_L: i'll wait another few then
04:10 PM XXCoder: yay new frank
04:12 PM XXCoder: hey roycroft you got shop like his? ;)
04:27 PM roycroft: like what?
04:28 PM XXCoder: huge router, etc lol
04:28 PM XXCoder: was kdding, know your shop is pretty small
04:49 PM * JT-Shop takes 5 after dealing with the compost bins all afternoon... good for another year
04:58 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: lol nice
04:59 PM * JT-Shop is worn out...
05:00 PM JT-Shop: sift and bag bin #3 then carry them up the hill to the carport for storage
05:01 PM JT-Shop: move bin #2 to #3, move bin #1 to #2, prep bin #1 for fresh chicken poop
05:01 PM XXCoder: man I want franks cnc router so bad
05:01 PM JT-Shop: link
05:02 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/IZTv5y0yX6w?t=532
05:03 PM * Tom_L thinks with all his knowledge JT-Shop would have automated this process by now :)
05:03 PM JT-Shop: not enough volume for automation
05:03 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: then why do he still exist? ;) its defensive action to not aytomate all
05:04 PM JT-Shop: avidcnc is a nice machine for sure
05:05 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:05 PM XXCoder: drop down side is amazing
05:06 PM JT-Shop: dovetail is interesting design
05:06 PM XXCoder: yeah. and cnc millable!
05:07 PM XXCoder: yet another dovetail design
05:14 PM JT-Shop: paul sellers would be upset
05:27 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:44 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: yeah? why would he be?
06:58 PM acer is now known as _unreal_

07:27 PM roycroft: well i guess someone is trying to start a campaign
07:27 PM roycroft: in the last hour i've received eight emails referring to the vaccine policy at the country fair as "worse than the nazis when they exterminated the jews"
07:28 PM roycroft: the rule is still very simple:
07:28 PM roycroft: invoke godwin
07:28 PM roycroft: you lose instantly
07:29 PM XXCoder: yep
07:29 PM XXCoder: unless really a real comprasions. that one is not
07:29 PM roycroft: correct
07:29 PM roycroft: mike godwin himself clarified that
07:30 PM roycroft: if your comparison is thoughtful and shows an awareness of history, go ahead and compare someone to hitler
07:32 PM roycroft: saying "we're having a party, and if you don't have a vaccine you're not invited" does not show either thought nor an awareness of history if that statement is being compared to the atrocities of nazi germany
07:36 PM roycroft: and here's another one
07:36 PM roycroft: i suspect my inbox is going to be rather busy tonight
07:36 PM roycroft: it's perhaps a good time to not pay attention to email for a while
07:36 PM XXCoder: fun lol
07:37 PM XXCoder: i just finished amazing vase
07:37 PM XXCoder: its gold colored, or is it blue?
07:37 PM XXCoder: its dual color like quantium filament, but I made it lol
07:38 PM roycroft: i thought it was a gold dress that is really blue
07:38 PM roycroft: or a blue dress that is really gold
07:39 PM XXCoder: well it might be printed in quantium filament LOL
07:39 PM XXCoder: funny how many didnt consider that answer is "yes"
07:42 PM roycroft: https://www.zenia.com/black-and-blue-dress/
07:43 PM roycroft: it's a gold dress that is really blue
07:43 PM XXCoder: I know lol
07:43 PM roycroft: it's been a few years, and i had forgotten what the truth of the matter was
07:43 PM XXCoder: im saying "yes" because it depends on context
07:43 PM roycroft: it does
07:43 PM XXCoder: outside vs inside building
08:35 PM roycroft: i finally get back to working on my 3d printer today
08:35 PM XXCoder: yeah?
08:35 PM roycroft: when i wire the temperature probe the way i think it should be wired it measures 98 degrees when the hot end is at room temperature
08:35 PM roycroft: if i reverse the wiring it reads -14 degrees
08:36 PM roycroft: so i just ordered another temperature probe
08:36 PM roycroft: hopefully i'll get it by next weekend
08:36 PM roycroft: i have a lot of hardware boxes to make
08:37 PM roycroft: about 1200, i think
08:37 PM roycroft: and if the new hot end works out well i'll be able to print 18 or 27 per day
08:37 PM roycroft: which is still months of printing
08:39 PM XXCoder: wow that many? wouldnt bulk order be better
08:39 PM roycroft: i haven't found anyone who makes what i need
08:40 PM roycroft: i found one source for inexpensive boxes that are close to what i need, but the different sizes are not even multiples
08:40 PM roycroft: i.e. one that is 2x as long as the base size isn't really exactly 2x as long
08:40 PM roycroft: which makes them completely non-modular
08:41 PM roycroft: i ordered a hundred of them a while back, thinking i could make them work
08:41 PM roycroft: the good news is that they're really handy for storing fasteners for projects i'm working on
08:41 PM roycroft: the bad news is they're completely useless for the intended application
08:42 PM roycroft: i'm pretty sure that printing my own will cost me more in filament cost alone than purchasing pre-made ones, much less the cost of electricity, my time, and amortizing the cost of the printer
08:42 PM roycroft: but i'll get what i need
08:43 PM roycroft: also, i can print the boxes in different colors, which will help with identifying the material that's used to make a particular fastener, whereas the commercial ones come in one color only
08:49 PM XXCoder: intresting
09:01 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Fastener-Boxes.jpeg
09:02 PM roycroft: i'm printing a small lip on the top of the boxes for a label
09:02 PM roycroft: there's really not enough room to add the material type to the label, since it's so small
09:02 PM XXCoder: interesting
09:02 PM XXCoder: honestly not too bad. in least its not 1500 big boxes
09:03 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:03 PM roycroft: the color coding will work out well, i think
09:04 PM XXCoder: yeah have table somewhere
09:04 PM roycroft: some of the boxes will be the smallest size, but sub-divided in halves or quarters
09:04 PM roycroft: and some will be 1.5x, 2x, or 3x as long as the basic size
09:05 PM roycroft: and 2x or 3x as wide
09:05 PM roycroft: where long is along the x axis and wide is along y
09:05 PM roycroft: you can see some of the 1.5x1 boxes in that picture
09:47 PM roycroft: there's over 100 new messages in my inbox, i assume all from the "nazi" accusers
09:48 PM Tom_L: better you than me
10:00 PM XXCoder: publish em all
10:08 PM roycroft: that would be unethical
10:18 PM unterhaus_: how did they find out you were a nazi?
10:18 PM roycroft: we are requiring vaccines or negative tests to attend the fair
10:18 PM roycroft: somehow that makes us worse than nazis
10:20 PM unterhaus_: half of them probably didn't want to go
10:20 PM roycroft: at least
10:21 PM roycroft: "we donate thousands of dollers per year to the fair. we also spend thoudands more supporting vendors while we're at the fair. because of your new nazi-like policies we'll never attend again and you'll never see any more of our money"
10:21 PM roycroft: somehow i suspect that person does not donate thoudands of dollars per year
10:21 PM roycroft: nor spends thousands of dollars per year at the craft and food booths
10:23 PM roycroft: i think the rule of thumb is that the more money a complainer claims to give the organization, the lower the chance that the complainer has ever attended the event or given any money to the organization or its vendors
10:24 PM XXCoder: any ,illion dollar claims?
10:24 PM roycroft: not yet
10:25 PM XXCoder: lol ok
10:26 PM XXCoder: i read about one guy who got vaccined 90 times
10:26 PM XXCoder: so he could sell vax cards
10:26 PM XXCoder: doctors isnt sure whats side effects would be
10:27 PM roycroft: similarly, every person in the faux news peanut gallery who says "i voted for obama but ..." not only did not vote for obama, but has never voted at all
10:49 PM mrec: does anyone have any idea how to figure out the hall positions of a BLDC motor without disassembling the motor?
10:50 PM mrec: I have a 310V rated BLDC motor here
10:51 PM mrec: aliexpress.com/item/1005003707935525.html
10:51 PM mrec: the motivation to disassemble it is low, I have ordered a 1.2kw motor already
10:52 PM mrec: however I'd like to test this one with the 1.5kw controller
10:57 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:03 PM unterhaus_: mrec AMC used to have a pretty good applications note on how to phase motors
11:03 PM unterhaus_: does the control have a mode where it only uses the halls?
11:04 PM Tom_L: mrec, got that controller already?
11:05 PM unterhaus_: have to register to get the app note
11:06 PM unterhaus_: basically you keep swapping hall outputs until it doesn't run rough
11:06 PM Tom_L: is there a standard color coding for them?
11:07 PM Tom_L: on that pic it somewhat looks like they layed the wires out in order
11:08 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Spindle/BLDC_Wiring1.jpg
11:08 PM Tom_L: similar to mine
11:08 PM Tom_L: but a couple different colors
11:10 PM unterhaus_: I don't think there is a color code outside of a given brand
11:10 PM unterhaus_: maybe all the Chinese motors are the same, dunno
11:11 PM Tom_L: https://imgur.com/NktFBwJ
11:11 PM Tom_L: might be a way to test it
11:13 PM Tom_L: oddly that matches my wiring
11:27 PM mrec: Tom_L: yes I have the controller but I ordered it without motor
11:28 PM mrec: Tom_L: when I attempted to install it I saw the motor ... and the conclusion is just that this motor is not strong enough for the mini lathe and 32mm steel (not for my purpose)
11:29 PM mrec: 32mm steel is hard at the border with the installed 750w motor especially since the torque curve doesn't match the machine
11:29 PM Tom_L: is yours 220v?
11:29 PM Tom_L: i was curious if it could be ordered as a 110v unit
11:29 PM roycroft: the emails have slowed down
11:29 PM roycroft: hopefully they will stop soon
11:33 PM mrec: I ordered 220v yes I'm using a transformer here
11:33 PM mrec: 110v -> 220v
11:33 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
11:33 PM mrec: I want to keep the machinery consistent
11:34 PM Tom_L: mine came as 110v was why i wondered
11:34 PM mrec: I ordered a mill with 110v back then but they have shipped 220v to taiwan, after that I ordered a lathe with 220v as wel
11:34 PM mrec: well
11:34 PM mrec: that company was friendly enough to also ship a transformer for free after their mistake
11:34 PM Tom_L: where are you?
11:35 PM mrec: I moved from Germany to Taiwan
11:35 PM Tom_L: would have taken alot longer to get that to the US
11:35 PM Tom_L: was why i wondered
11:35 PM mrec: so the 51st US state :D
11:35 PM mrec: but with more freedom than in the states
11:38 PM Tom_L: that was nice of them to send the transformer
11:38 PM mrec: Tom_L: your BLDC HALL wiring is different
11:38 PM mrec: the colours do not match the power phases
11:39 PM mrec: I have the same motor on the CNC mill, I can do face milling up to 40mm with it but that's the absolute limit
11:39 PM Tom_L: on yours, it looks like they purposely laid the wires out though
11:40 PM mrec: I asked the resellers about the pinout they say they have no idea
11:40 PM Tom_L: of course
11:40 PM mrec: well I'd expect at least that they have access to some datasheet
11:41 PM mrec: I guess they have but don't bother
11:43 PM Tom_L: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001857879926.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.12.391b2b0620qm1w&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40050.274735.0&scm_id=1007.40050.274735.0&scm-url=1007.40050.274735.0&pvid=1c54af1b-9030-4e41-903d-4d14f79cd840&_t=gps-id:pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40050.274735.0,pvid:1c54af1b-9030-4e41-903d-4d14f79cd840,tpp_buckets:668%232846%238108%231977&pdp_ext_f=%257B%2522sku_id%2522%253A%252212

11:43 PM XXCoder: link bomb
11:44 PM Tom_L: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001857879926.html
11:49 PM XXCoder: thats one hefy drive
11:49 PM XXCoder: interesting. whats your plans for one
11:50 PM mrec: you know it depends on the design of the motor ... 750w can be okay as far as I've seen
11:51 PM mrec: buying the same item from alibaba or taobao is usually a bit cheaper
11:51 PM mrec: (cheaper than aliexpress)
11:52 PM mrec: https://streamable.com/ceqt1h
11:52 PM mrec: I'm doing that now
11:52 PM XXCoder: bright lights
11:53 PM XXCoder: makes room look dark lol
11:53 PM XXCoder: looks like excellent cut
11:53 PM mrec: for the mini mill yes
11:53 PM mrec: everything within my tolerances
11:53 PM mrec: <0.1mm
11:53 PM XXCoder: moving towards clamos always make me nervious even when its already dry run
11:54 PM XXCoder: mn I miss running cnc machines lol
