01:52 AM randy: morning
02:49 AM Deejay: moin
03:07 AM Rhine_Labs: Morn.
05:07 AM Tom_L: morning
05:10 AM JT-Cave: morning
09:07 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:04 AM t4nk_freenode: well, I got two more 30x40mm beams
10:04 AM t4nk_freenode: so I've slightly changed my plans
10:07 AM t4nk_freenode: not gonna cut them, but leave them at 1m length
10:07 AM t4nk_freenode: for the bigger machine, and then use some 30x30mm beams I have for the smaller one
10:07 AM t4nk_freenode: I reckon they'll be fine at 50cm's length
10:08 AM Tom_L: morning
10:08 AM Tom_L: so let's see the cad model for your plans?
10:08 AM t4nk_freenode: morning THomas
10:08 AM t4nk_freenode: hehe... yeah, I know, haven't gotten 'round to it yet'
10:08 AM t4nk_freenode: ehm,... well as a matter of fact.. I have
10:09 AM t4nk_freenode: I put a beam into my current machine's cad ;)
10:10 AM t4nk_freenode: still have some stuff to ponder though
10:11 AM t4nk_freenode: like what I'll be doing with the lead screws
10:15 AM t4nk_freenode: I think I'll order some trapezoidal threaded spindle for them
10:15 AM t4nk_freenode: I'm no fan of normal threaded rods
10:20 AM Tom_L: just ditch the bearings and get a linear rail kit
10:21 AM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/114023794768
10:21 AM Tom_L: ballscrews n all
10:21 AM Tom_L: then you can put the bearings back in your roller skates :)
10:22 AM t4nk_freenode: ... I'm committed now mate..
10:22 AM Tom_L: i got a similar kit for mine
10:23 AM t4nk_freenode: you know what... I'm not at all convinced the rails you pasted are stronger than my rollerskates
10:23 AM t4nk_freenode: and it's friggin' expensive too, right?
10:23 AM Tom_L: depends on the beam
10:23 AM Tom_L: maybe so
10:23 AM Tom_L: but they are fairly straight
10:24 AM t4nk_freenode: nah, Tom_L, not by a long shot.. don't those have like these inni-minni little balls inside em?
10:24 AM JT-Shop: that would make a nice router
10:24 AM t4nk_freenode: yeah, they're probably more accurate
10:24 AM Tom_L: i've been pretty pleased with mine
10:24 AM Tom_L: before i could barely use a .125 em without chatter etc
10:24 AM JT-Shop: https://www.ebay.com/itm/313867691044?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200818143230%26meid%3D9298ad53e8f6478684c7d60bd45a4131%26pid%3D101224%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D114023794768%26itm%3D313867691044%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DDefaultOrganicWeb%26brand%3DUnbranded&_trksid=p2047675.c101224.m-1
10:25 AM Tom_L: now i can plough thru alum .1 depth with a .375 em
10:25 AM JT-Shop: sorry about the link
10:25 AM Tom_L: it's ok, it's saturday and nobody is really awake yet
10:26 AM JT-Shop: how far apart did you place the trucks
10:26 AM t4nk_freenode: Tom_L, 'before', as in with your square-beam setup?
10:26 AM Tom_L: yeah the one jt posted looks like it would be better suited for a gantry
10:26 AM Tom_L: 10"?
10:26 AM Tom_L: i forget
10:26 AM Tom_L: oh end to end?
10:26 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Y_Axis_Plate3.jpg
10:27 AM JT-Shop: yeah how much travel do you loose
10:27 AM Tom_L: about that much :)
10:27 AM JT-Shop: lol
10:27 AM Tom_L: probably 6-8"?
10:28 AM Tom_L: i had it all figgered out once...
10:28 AM JT-Shop: that's all you need to do it is once
10:28 AM Tom_L: that's the main X Y plate
10:31 AM Tom_L: t4nk_freenode, 'before' i had a sherline
10:31 AM t4nk_freenode: let me look that up ;)
10:31 AM Tom_L: all aluminum 'toy'
10:31 AM Tom_L: i'd had it for a good 25+ yrs
10:32 AM Tom_L: and used it to drill those plates
10:32 AM Tom_L: then chopped it's head off
10:32 AM Tom_L: using it (the spindle) on the new one
10:32 AM t4nk_freenode: could those be configured as a lathe too?
10:33 AM Tom_L: your imagination is the limit
10:33 AM t4nk_freenode: lol, I have a pretty big ima ;)
10:33 AM Tom_L: some russian dude (forget his handle here) made a lathe from scratch
10:35 AM t4nk_freenode: and yours was manually operated?
10:35 AM Tom_L: it looked pretty solid
10:35 AM Tom_L: my which?
10:35 AM t4nk_freenode: sherline
10:35 AM Tom_L: no the sherline was cnc also
10:35 AM Tom_L: not linuxcnc
10:36 AM Tom_L: the first steppers on it were single stack... maybe 85in/oz?
10:36 AM Tom_L: kindof a joke
10:37 AM t4nk_freenode: yeah, I'll need bigger steppers for the larger machine too
10:38 AM t4nk_freenode: gotta run to the stores, bbl
10:45 AM perry_j1987: mornin
10:45 AM perry_j1987: everybody got their coffee yet
10:48 AM roycroft: as a matter of fact, i just stepped into my office after making a nice cappuccino
10:48 AM * roycroft will be caffeinated presently
11:08 AM t4nk_freenode: I'm back for a quick coffee, then off to the stores again
11:47 AM _unreal_: Your always "going to the store" what are you doing?
11:48 AM _unreal_: poor shopping list skills?
11:48 AM _unreal_: do you work there
11:50 AM t4nk_freenode: I'll let you know,
11:50 AM t4nk_freenode: as soon as it becomes any of your business
11:50 AM t4nk_freenode: may coincide with hell freezing over :b
12:05 PM t4nk_freenode: (which probably isn't far off...)
12:05 PM t4nk_freenode: GOTTA RUN TO THE STORES!
12:06 PM * roycroft heads off to build his pid controller for the kiln
12:08 PM roycroft: and thank goodness, snow is no longer in our forecast for next week
12:08 PM roycroft: the last time we had snow in april was 2012, and that snow storm took down three large trees on my property
12:13 PM mrec: can anyone recommend some side clamps for a milling table?
12:29 PM Tom_L: http://www.jergensinc.com/Site/PDFs/WSG/WORKHOLDING_SOLUTIONS_CATALOG_WEB.pdf
12:29 PM Tom_L: that should give you a few ideas
12:29 PM Tom_L: cam locs etc
02:08 PM _unreal_: I have not seen snow in years :)
02:08 PM _unreal_: and damn proud of it
02:09 PM XXCoder: _unreal_: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuqVnqNPyC0
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what is the easiest way to handle controlling a Cartesian machine with LCNC that has 2 gantries that share the same space, except for where they park themselves at the limits of their Y-axis travel?
02:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Two gantries are used with their own tools/spindle vs having one gantry where the tools/spindles are swapped.
02:27 PM XXCoder: maybe two seperate y axis and their own joints
02:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hey there is a new CNC controller brand, FUNAC https://www.machinemfg.com/top-10-cnc-system/
03:15 PM XXCoder: FUNac
03:15 PM XXCoder: total of 4549 as of sept 2005
03:15 PM XXCoder: very recent
03:16 PM XXCoder: I mean, its less than adult years lol
03:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: does a credible article on CNC controllers not catch the typo?
03:29 PM XXCoder: japan company, might have had FUN translator
03:51 PM * roycroft at the home "improvement" store a few minutes ago:
03:52 PM roycroft: i'm looking for a 14ga power cord with a molded nema 15 plug on one end, and i don't care about the other end
03:52 PM roycroft: so-called electrical department helper:
03:52 PM roycroft: we don't have that size - but we have 16ga, and that should work fine
03:53 PM roycroft: me: this application will draw 15a - i need 14ga
03:53 PM roycroft: so-called helper: people use 16ga cords for that all the time and you don't see houses burning down all over the place
03:53 PM roycroft: why hasn't that person been fired yet?
03:54 PM roycroft: the liability concerns alone disqualify him from opening his mouth in the store
03:55 PM roycroft: granted, in my application the cord will be rather short, and will be in the open air, but it will also carry the full current for hours at a time
03:56 PM roycroft: it's highly likely that it will just get warmer than desirable, but would likely be quite safe to use
03:56 PM roycroft: nevertheless, 14ga is what is called for, and nobody should ever recommend using a smaller gauge cord
03:58 PM roycroft: as well, the answer to a very specific question like that should be "i'm sorry, we don't have that", full stop
03:58 PM roycroft: it should never be "but why don't you just use what we have in an unsafe manner"
03:59 PM roycroft: the other store i went to had exactly what i need
04:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQUstJi1i1M 2 independent joints on one axis
04:41 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLHy0IGgFtU
04:47 PM t4nk_freenode: heh, nice try, but that is just not it
04:48 PM t4nk_freenode: he has plastic wheels riding on a wooden beam for the y axes
04:48 PM t4nk_freenode: what makes you think I'm up for that?! ;)
04:52 PM _unreal_: lot of the parts are 3d printed
04:52 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, made me cringe too :)
04:52 PM _unreal_: still interesting design.
04:52 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, nice work on that
04:52 PM _unreal_: and it has a HUGE z travel
04:53 PM t4nk_freenode: wouldn't call that huge though
04:53 PM _unreal_: looks like 16" easy
04:53 PM _unreal_: maybe much more
04:53 PM t4nk_freenode: perhaps I didn't pay enough attention
04:54 PM t4nk_freenode: anyhow, I was just browsing the shope where I'm gonna get my trapezoid spindles
04:54 PM t4nk_freenode: has like 16euros shipping cost, so I want to buy some more stuff there
04:54 PM t4nk_freenode: some anti backlash nits
04:54 PM t4nk_freenode: nnut
04:54 PM t4nk_freenode: ss
04:55 PM _unreal_: wwhhaatt?
04:55 PM t4nk_freenode: shut yer yapp.
04:56 PM t4nk_freenode: tell me what size trapezoid spindles to buy instead
04:56 PM t4nk_freenode: Trapezoidal threaded spindle RPTS right TR 10x2 - L=1000mm
04:56 PM t4nk_freenode: I have 8x2 now
04:57 PM _unreal_: that is your call
04:57 PM _unreal_: needs to be rated for your intended load
04:57 PM _unreal_: which is based on the max load of the spindle
04:57 PM t4nk_freenode: that may change.
04:57 PM t4nk_freenode: for a bigger one
04:57 PM t4nk_freenode: is m10 too much?
04:58 PM _unreal_: not likely
04:58 PM t4nk_freenode: they also have Thread: 10x4P2 right, rolled. according to ISO and DIN 103 2901/2903
04:58 PM t4nk_freenode: Pitch (P): 4mm
04:58 PM _unreal_: but it will change your max feed rate
04:59 PM perry_j1987: CaptHindsight[m] that vid looks like it'd make a nice mini IDEX 3d printer haha
04:59 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, I'm not so pleased with the 2mm pitch on these 8mm screws
04:59 PM _unreal_: what matters is the load and the feed rate you want
04:59 PM t4nk_freenode: a bit too slow to my liking
04:59 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, for speed you need belts
04:59 PM t4nk_freenode: 8mm pitch was nice and fast, but it will be less precise
05:00 PM t4nk_freenode: no belts man, not ever, never.
05:01 PM t4nk_freenode: so I could go for 10x4p2, but I don't know that the p2 means
05:02 PM t4nk_freenode: but for that 10x4p2 there is little choice for nuts and stuff
05:02 PM t4nk_freenode: seems 10x2 has more choice
05:03 PM _unreal_: no idea
05:03 PM t4nk_freenode: so, for the backlash nut I can go with either delrin or zedex... what's the difference?
05:04 PM t4nk_freenode: zedex is more expensive
05:05 PM t4nk_freenode: ok, and lastly, I was looking at maybe buying some round shafts for the z-axis, as an experiment
05:06 PM t4nk_freenode: and the question then is... what diameter shafts would be ok
05:06 PM t4nk_freenode: 16mm, 20mm
05:07 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, my experience with electrical helper was fun too
05:07 PM t4nk_freenode: and then with SCJ20UU adjustable clearance linear bearings
05:07 PM JT-Shop: me do you have a 15 amp 220 volt outlet?
05:07 PM t4nk_freenode: but I don't know if that's strong enough
05:07 PM JT-Shop: him what's it for?
05:07 PM JT-Shop: me a telsa coil...
05:08 PM t4nk_freenode: hrhr
05:08 PM JT-Shop: him their over here
05:09 PM JT-Shop: actually he asked me twice what's it for lol
05:12 PM * t4nk_freenode pokes _unreal_ with a stick so he changes from mouth-breathing to normal breathing again
05:28 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, so do you ever go into the store and check for clerk's age before asking?
05:29 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:29 PM JT-Shop: no
05:29 PM Tom_L: it seems to help
05:30 PM Tom_L: in roy's case the kid probably thought the bigger the number the higher capacity :)
05:33 PM JT-Shop: I asked the service manager at a Honda motorcycle dealer why the tire would cup and not wear even? You should have heard his bs answer
05:33 PM Tom_L: wouldn't that be low pressure?
05:33 PM JT-Shop: I told him if you can't make up a plausible lie just say you don't know
05:34 PM Tom_L: heh
05:34 PM JT-Shop: hard braking
05:34 PM Tom_L: front?
05:34 PM JT-Shop: aye
05:34 PM Tom_L: that could do it too
05:34 PM JT-Shop: I don't do that anymore lol
05:35 PM XXCoder: wheel bouncing?
05:35 PM XXCoder: probably not possible on a bike
05:35 PM Tom_L: just limit yourself to wheelstands now ehh?
05:35 PM JT-Shop: not on a GoldWing it's 800+ pounds
05:35 PM Tom_L: yeah i know..
05:35 PM JT-Shop: yea no more 120 MPH fast stops lol
05:36 PM Tom_L: the tire would probably cut loose before the front would come up
05:36 PM JT-Shop: no, you can wheelie a GW
05:36 PM Tom_L: no i can't :)
05:36 PM JT-Shop: right
05:37 PM Tom_L: ...
05:37 PM Tom_L: iirc the only honda i had was a 150 and that was too long ago to talk about
05:38 PM CloudEvil: When your childhood hardware starts popping up on antique shows...
05:39 PM Tom_L: well...
05:39 PM Tom_L: i still have my childhood lunch box missing a thermos
05:39 PM Tom_L: or it would be worth $$
05:40 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHLKIEGALvk - related. (never had one of these)
05:42 PM Tom_L: and then there's this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/274373826462
05:43 PM Tom_L: give that to a kid today and he'd find a way to cut a finger off
05:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: t4nk_freenode: hadn't seen those IDEX printers before, but they don't offer independent movement of each head
05:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just copy and mirror
05:48 PM t4nk_freenode: that doesn't seem extremely useful
05:50 PM CloudEvil: It's really useful if you want to print many parts
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: material deposition, laser etch/cut
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: raster scan vs vectors
06:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: t4nk_freenode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oU7SuVIx0Ko
06:14 PM XXCoder: assuming both sides have approxately similiar length of cutsm that'd cut time to hald
06:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cclODNtkVYk
06:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJsr4reyDCU
06:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/S_7VCEe3hOk
06:21 PM t4nk_freenode: I'll ehhh.. start with just the one gantry first ;)
06:35 PM Tom_L: wonder if they have sensors to keep them from hitting
06:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you can but that is a bad way to do it
06:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the G-code generator and/or the planner should prevent that from happeneing
06:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sensors are for catching a crash just as or before it occurs due to conflicting paths
06:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "just as or before it occurs " with a sensor that can react fast enough to keep the machine from breaking
06:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: same as a limit switch that trips before the actual crash that breaks something
06:44 PM JT-Shop: anyone know of a decent CNC router kit?
06:45 PM XXCoder: depends on so many factors
06:45 PM XXCoder: 4060 is good enough for many basic smaller stuff for example
06:45 PM JT-Shop: https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/topic/37037-cnc-recommendation-for-2d-wood-cutting-new-to-cncs/#comment-287974
06:46 PM XXCoder: frankly... build your own
06:47 PM XXCoder: MGNs or SBRs is quite cheap, or you could use double belt system., thick belts
06:48 PM XXCoder: again, much depends on what you plan to use it for
06:48 PM XXCoder: for example if you want to cut 4'x8' wood sheets into stuff, double belt is far easiest, and cheap. you only need very little sideload reistance for that
06:49 PM JT-Shop: no problem for me building one, the guy in the link may not have much for tools and experience
06:49 PM XXCoder: oh misunderstood your question LOL
06:49 PM XXCoder: lets see
06:50 PM XXCoder: 1" z max, 18" wide wood
06:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: go shop around and post your choices for critical review here :)
06:50 PM XXCoder: xcarve is from I heard, meh though plenty for wood
06:50 PM XXCoder: bob one is interesting, though dunno if I would use it
06:51 PM XXCoder: uses supported rods though their own
06:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: budget, life expectancy, accuracy, size, etc etc about 100 more questions need answers first
06:51 PM XXCoder: probably workabnle? pretty cheap
06:51 PM XXCoder: Mill Right – Mega V Router is meh. sides is VERY tall. annoying I bet
06:52 PM roycroft: i am happy
06:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: warranty, who is going to fix it? who s going to align it? which tool holders etc etc
06:52 PM XXCoder: capt indeed
06:52 PM roycroft: one of the most satisfying things to me is when i design an electronic controller device, build it, plug it in, and it works perfectly the first time
06:52 PM XXCoder: if warranty is "lol what warranty" then it has far less value, for a business looking for router
06:53 PM roycroft: which is the case with my kiln controller
06:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: who do I contact for problems with the "crunchy" bearings out of the box?
06:53 PM roycroft: cap'n crunch?
06:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why does the design allow for 5mm of lash in x and y-axis?
06:54 PM roycroft: generosity
06:54 PM roycroft: not everyone will give you 5mm to play with
06:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why are the fasteners all red oxide treated?
06:55 PM XXCoder: makeup
06:55 PM roycroft: so when you cut yourself on them the blood won't be visible
06:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: did you paint the router frame with a mop?
06:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how much bondo in the machine frame is OK?
06:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why do soft cheeses come out square after cutting but hard cheeses and woods come out not so square?
06:59 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight[m]: what, you use stuff with bondo? they just use purely bondo
07:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: how much metal is in the machine frame under the bondo?
07:00 PM XXCoder: probably a gram. by accienly inclusion of metal chips in bondo
07:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if they used sand and granite with epoxy as a filler it could add the dampening
07:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: bondo is talc, clay and polyester resin
07:02 PM XXCoder: just make sure water dont touch it, theres nothing to rust, but cheap bondo might dissolve
07:02 PM JT-Shop: probotix design looks ok
07:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: paper mache
07:03 PM XXCoder: yep
07:03 PM XXCoder: jt yea thoygh 5k
07:03 PM JT-Shop: yea

07:05 PM XXCoder: thats better
07:12 PM JT-Shop: time to wander inside
07:13 PM XXCoder: yay. dont forget to close door so you dont wander out
08:40 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/GzyjvC49J2rTXyaG8
08:42 PM Tom_L: ooo lookie there
08:43 PM XXCoder: nice
08:45 PM skunkworks: A little wiring - and I can test that..
08:45 PM Tom_L: no belt adjustment?
08:46 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: about a 1/2 inch adjustment in the screws. You can see the slot peaking out by the screw holding the stepper on.
08:46 PM Tom_L: oh, well now that you pointed it out..
08:47 PM skunkworks: should be about a ton of cutting force in that direction
08:48 PM Tom_L: seeing some of the stuff you work on... that could be marginal :)
08:48 PM skunkworks: lol
08:49 PM skunkworks: I changed the front wheel bearings in the toyota last weekend - I could not imagine doing it without a press.. I thought for a second that they weren't going to press out until it finally went 'bang'
08:50 PM Tom_L: front wheel drive?
08:50 PM skunkworks: yes
08:50 PM Tom_L: :/
08:51 PM Tom_L: cv boots good?
08:51 PM Tom_L: or you'll be doing those soon too
08:51 PM skunkworks: lol - they looked good. this car is on borrowed time. 260k original clutch.
08:52 PM Tom_L: just broke in...
08:52 PM Tom_L: but you haven't had any kids to teach on it yet either
08:52 PM skunkworks: still have a few years.. 7 or so..
08:53 PM Tom_L: that should be fun teaching a manual
08:53 PM skunkworks: the jetta is also a manual..
08:53 PM Tom_L: hydraulic or cable clutch?
08:53 PM skunkworks: both are hydraulic
08:54 PM Tom_L: i think most are now
08:54 PM skunkworks: yes
08:55 PM Tom_L: they'll burn up the clutch and synchro rings in the tranny for ya
08:55 PM skunkworks: not if I teach them right...
08:56 PM Tom_L: i grew up driving manual but i'm gettin lazy now
08:58 PM Tom_L: few years back i pulled the head on my inlaw's toyota pickup cause the valves were sticking
08:58 PM Tom_L: other than that, it's still going afik
08:58 PM roycroft: my pickup is my only currently-running vehicle with a manual transmission
08:58 PM roycroft: i used to insist on manual transmission on all my vehicles
08:59 PM roycroft: of course, my daily driver, the prius, doesn't really do any gear shifting anyway
08:59 PM skunkworks: I like a stick for the daily driver.. Family trip vehicle is auto.
08:59 PM roycroft: it has a transmission with a big planetary gear that "shifts" back and forth between the engine and the electric motor
09:00 PM roycroft: much of the time engaging both simultaneously
09:00 PM Tom_L: what do they do for batteries on those?
09:00 PM Tom_L: since it's a hybrid
09:01 PM roycroft: there is a bank of batteries that i've never seen that are tucked between the back seat and the trunk
09:01 PM roycroft: that's for the drive motor
09:01 PM roycroft: then there's a standard size battery for running the electrical components of the vehicle - lights, door locks, radio. etc.
09:02 PM Tom_L: does the engine charge both?
09:02 PM roycroft: yes
09:02 PM Tom_L: i bet that alternator is expensive
09:02 PM roycroft: it has regenerative braking
09:03 PM Tom_L: alt/charge regulator
09:03 PM roycroft: i save a lot of fuel by engaging that
09:03 PM roycroft: i actually do use the gear shifter a lot - i shift to braking mode when i'm able to come to a gradual stop
09:03 PM roycroft: and that charges the battery bank
09:03 PM roycroft: it uses the drive motor as a generator
09:04 PM roycroft: not only does it save fuel, i've had the car for about six years now, and i haven't had to do a brake job
09:04 PM roycroft: i don't use the brakes very much
09:05 PM roycroft: my driving style does piss off a lot of people, but for no reason
09:05 PM roycroft: they get pissed off because i can anticipate most of the them when i'm going to need to stop, and engage the regenrative braking early on
09:06 PM roycroft: i'm very good about approaching an intersection where traffic is stopped going about 2 mph, and then i just have to tap the brakes briefly to finish the stop
09:06 PM roycroft: people think that slows them down
09:07 PM roycroft: that driving full speed and slamming on the brakes at the last moment gets them places faster
09:07 PM Tom_L: yeah it sure does
09:07 PM Tom_L: to the next light
09:07 PM roycroft: our traffic lights in downtown eugene are synchronized
09:07 PM Tom_L: some of ours are
09:07 PM roycroft: if you approach an intersection on a green light, and drive the speed limit, you'll get through all of downtown on greens
09:07 PM Tom_L: depending on the time of day
09:08 PM roycroft: i think that i'm one of about 7 people who do that
09:08 PM roycroft: everyone else floors it, slams on the brakes, waits until the red light turns green, floors it, slams on the brakes, etc.
09:09 PM XXCoder: reminds me of that very old popeye comic
09:09 PM XXCoder: hamburger guy being you essentally
09:09 PM XXCoder: britus being guy you discriped
09:09 PM roycroft: it's kind of the tortoise and the hare thing too
09:10 PM roycroft: i drive the posted speed limit, time the lights so i'm not having to brake at the last minute, basically taking my time
09:10 PM roycroft: and i get places at least as fast as the leadfoots who are always stomping on the throttle and the brake alternatively
09:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:14 PM roycroft: this pid controller works a lot differently to the last ramp/soak one i bought
09:14 PM roycroft: my test went fine as far as the controller function but i got the programming a bit off
09:15 PM roycroft: i'm going to have to actually read the instruction manual
09:15 PM roycroft: don't tell anyone
09:15 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/584oMACJ5RPGLbek7
09:16 PM XXCoder: very clean shop
09:17 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, you use carbide?
09:17 PM Tom_L: finish comes out ok?
09:17 PM Tom_L: i found on mine even with carbide i get a better surface finish with a little coolant.
09:25 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: yes - but that is hss
09:26 PM skunkworks: I was spraying it with light oil (kerosine and oil)
09:26 PM Tom_L: ok
09:35 PM skunkworks: I have to get some coolant - ran out.
09:35 PM roycroft: abom is making big messes today
09:36 PM roycroft: and it's really bugging him
09:36 PM roycroft: he's doing his first oil change on his new lathe, and is spilling it everywhere
09:36 PM skunkworks: Lol - I had that running while I was working...
09:37 PM roycroft: he's such a neat freak it's really funny to see him make big messes
09:43 PM roycroft: i got my second booster yesterday
09:43 PM roycroft: no fatigue today at all, like i've had in the past
09:43 PM roycroft: but my left arm is pretty sore
09:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you got boosted!
09:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I sorted out >300 cables in several boxes that were tangled
09:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: never pull tightly
09:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if VGA ever makes a comeback I'm ready
09:47 PM roycroft: i found some 50 pin scsi cables the other day
09:47 PM roycroft: dd-50 to amphenol
09:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I did not have any of those
09:48 PM roycroft: i haven't used one in at least 25 years
09:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but quite a collection of LPT cables
09:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I did find a few PS2, MIDI, DVI, PlayStation 1 and 2 cables
09:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lots of older non-standard phone chargers
09:49 PM roycroft: i used to hoarde all that kind of stuff
09:49 PM roycroft: now, when i run across it, i get rid of it
09:50 PM roycroft: the stuff that might be interesting i will put on ebay and toss in a box
09:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have all the old stuff in one container marked vintage cables
09:50 PM roycroft: if it doesn't sell for a while, it gets donated to st vinnie's
09:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: every now and then I need an old serial cable for something
09:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and you can't find them at microcenter anymore
09:51 PM roycroft: i moved to a system for rs-232 a long time ago
09:52 PM roycroft: i use d-sub connectors to rj-35
09:52 PM roycroft: i make up cat5 cables that are straight through
09:52 PM roycroft: not ethernet
09:52 PM roycroft: 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.
09:52 PM roycroft: then i make up the d-sub connectors
09:53 PM roycroft: db-9 and d3-25
09:53 PM roycroft: both male and female
09:53 PM roycroft: and i wire them for dte and dce equipment
09:53 PM roycroft: it's all in a kit
09:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: VGA are still used for servers
09:53 PM roycroft: whenever i need a serial connection i just pull out the appropriate adapters, plug them in, and make up or use a straight cable
09:54 PM roycroft: yeah, i still have machines with vga connectors
09:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: for serial I use a USB adapters
09:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: have them in many different forms
09:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we have new servers with VGA :)
09:54 PM roycroft: i just have one usb adapter
09:55 PM roycroft: it terminates in a de-9 female connector, wired dte
09:55 PM roycroft: so in my kit i keep an extra de-9 male dce connector
09:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: older servo and stepper drives often use RJ-11 or serial for programming
09:56 PM roycroft: and i got those backwards
09:56 PM roycroft: the usb adapter is male
09:56 PM roycroft: and i keep an extra female in my kit
09:56 PM roycroft: i also keep a cisco blue de-9 to rj45 cable in the kit for when i need to connect to cisco consoles
09:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some PLC's use rj-11 for serial, and their USB to RJ-11 adapter cables are $50 or more
09:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why I keep a few around
09:58 PM roycroft: i'm sure i could make something up with my kit for that
09:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah
09:58 PM roycroft: if they're just rj-11 they can't do hardware flow control
09:59 PM roycroft: all you can get is tx,rx,sg, and one more signal on an rj-11
09:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: nope, no control, usually just expect 9600, n, 1
09:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: er 8, n, 1
10:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sorting through power bricks for a 5V dc with the oddball barrel connector an Orange pi uses
10:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i know i had one
10:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: took 3 months to start feeling clear of the Covid brain fog
10:03 PM roycroft: i hope i don't have that experience
10:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: had it in Aug last year and again in Jan of this
10:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not fun
10:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you just can't concentrate
10:04 PM roycroft: my boss still thinks (or, at least says), that covid-19 is a total hoax, and does not exist
10:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: can't remember anything well
10:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah, I don't even try with them
10:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fake lies
10:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I wish there was a Nato country with an entrance exam
10:58 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], i still forget things
10:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: trying to sort things 1-2 months ago was nearly impossible for me
11:00 PM Tom_L: muscle/joint aches too
11:00 PM Tom_L: i took off ~4weeks
11:00 PM XXCoder: fake lies, isnt that truth?
11:00 PM XXCoder: and yeah people saying its all bullshit is just full of it
11:01 PM Tom_L: 2 wrong don't make it right
11:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: alternate lies
11:01 PM XXCoder: heh reminds me of that "alternate facts" thing
11:01 PM XXCoder: jeez
11:01 PM Tom_L: well, her sis is a believer now who once wasn't
11:02 PM Tom_L: they got it in colorado and had to drive 25 hrs home
11:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: equal opportunity parody, mockery and satire
11:02 PM XXCoder: tom ow
11:02 PM Tom_L: couldn't stop
11:02 PM XXCoder: I still wonder if my perment dizzyness is from covid
11:02 PM XXCoder: probably not
11:02 PM Tom_L: there are all sorts of odd side effects
11:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I started using Benadryl nightly, might have helped with the fog...
11:03 PM XXCoder: problem is I had dizzyness sometimes, predated covid
11:03 PM XXCoder: i got permently dizzy after covid started, but it was very early days, feb 2020 or so
11:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: either it's direct action or just better sleep and low risk
11:04 PM XXCoder: little bit later actually
11:04 PM Tom_L: i did for a while but generally don't take anything
11:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: was sick in Jan 2020 but didn't get tested back then
11:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: might have been the seasonal flu
11:05 PM Tom_L: just loaded up on vitamins
11:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'd say that having Covid-18 twice made me feel different than any seasonal flu
11:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: heh Covid-19
11:06 PM XXCoder: time traveling covid
11:06 PM Tom_L: i'd agree
11:06 PM Tom_L: screws with your nervous system too
11:07 PM XXCoder: Benadryl hmm gonna try that
11:07 PM Tom_L: but that goes away for the most part
11:07 PM XXCoder: id try anything to get relief from dizzyness
11:07 PM XXCoder: besides anti-paraste medicine LOL
11:07 PM Tom_L: x, some of that could be from head pressure which that might help with
11:07 PM XXCoder: ok
11:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: never had any lung congestion
11:07 PM Tom_L: i did that for a while
11:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fever for only 1-2 days
11:08 PM Tom_L: i coughed alot but it never got real deep
11:08 PM Tom_L: fever for several days
11:08 PM XXCoder: thats one thing for me - im been coughing for 8 years. lungs damage
11:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just weak, tired, coughs trying to clear throat for weeks
11:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: brain fog
11:08 PM Tom_L: yep
11:08 PM XXCoder: CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.amazon.com/Benadryl-Ultratabs-Antihistamine-Allergy-Diphenhydramine/dp/B001F1DV72
11:09 PM XXCoder: same type?
11:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: yeah those
11:09 PM XXCoder: ok ordering some
11:09 PM Tom_L: generic are just as good
11:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Diphenhydramine
11:09 PM XXCoder: need $6.08 worth of bullshit
11:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah I got the generics,
11:09 PM Tom_L: it will likely make you groggy
11:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 365 25mg tablets for ~$5 at walmart
11:10 PM Tom_L: also zirtec
11:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah, why I take them before bed
11:10 PM Tom_L: and the generic form for that too
11:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just getting older and just "lucky" has covid lasting several weeks for me
11:11 PM Tom_L: they've gone up but i was getting those for ~$6/100
11:12 PM Tom_L: they rob you for the brand name on those
11:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Equate-Allergy-Relief-Tablets-with-Diphenhydramine-HCl-25mg-Antihistamine-365-Count/170669688 $8
11:12 PM Tom_L: Cetirizine
11:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: other than that I tried to get on the antibody trials
11:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and just ate well and lots of sleep
11:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: first time the cold really bothered me
11:14 PM Tom_L: if you've had it and the vaccine you are much better protected than the vaccine alone
11:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i feel so much better on days >50F
11:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: had it and 2x boosters
11:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so 3x vaccines shots, and at least 2 positive tests 6 months apart, maybe positive twice earlier in 2020
11:16 PM Tom_L: i did get a couple b12 shots which helped more than anything
11:17 PM XXCoder: fully vaxxed for now
11:17 PM XXCoder: I hope next shot will be closer to newer versions
11:17 PM XXCoder: alright ordered it
11:17 PM XXCoder: hope it works. would be AMAZING if it did
11:17 PM XXCoder: dizzyness for 2 years really grinds you down.
11:17 PM Tom_L: that and stay hydrated
11:18 PM XXCoder: tom I dont drink anything but water
11:18 PM Tom_L: you need more than water
11:18 PM Tom_L: water is good
11:18 PM Tom_L: gatorade is better
11:18 PM Tom_L: pedialite is better yet
11:18 PM XXCoder: nah I really hate that taste
11:18 PM Tom_L: pedialite has a salty taste
11:19 PM XXCoder: I get LNMT salts added once a while. doesnt change anything for me but certainly more than meets nutition needs
11:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've pretty much been a hermit since last Sept
11:19 PM XXCoder: while I was curing my autobrewery with keto plan, I drink it once a while to keep healthy due to lack of foods with certain salts
11:20 PM XXCoder: btw it never come back, even with higher sugar snacks
11:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: except for family members that work around the unvaxed
11:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'd be surprised if my neighbors are even 40% vaxed
11:24 PM XXCoder: sucks
11:25 PM Tom_L: there was a point that i felt like i forgot how do do my job or drive
11:25 PM Tom_L: that took a while to get past
11:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: wow, I didn't get that bad but most of what I do is think
11:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some days 30 minutes was enough to just be brain exhausted
11:26 PM Tom_L: i was afraid to drive
11:26 PM Tom_L: and i do alot of driving
11:27 PM Tom_L: it passes
11:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: driving was awkward some days, like everything was just a bit off
11:27 PM Tom_L: i took someone with me the first day i ventured out
11:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: read some stories how some people had it really bad
11:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: can't work, drive, even walking is difficult
11:29 PM Tom_L: i wasn't hospitalized but it hit me pretty hard
11:29 PM Tom_L: my niece was in the hospital a while
11:29 PM Tom_L: 2 ppl i know died
11:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: did you lose taste and smell?
11:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: coffee tasted like hot water :)
11:30 PM Tom_L: i don't have alot of that anyway due to alot of refinishing i used to do
11:30 PM Tom_L: she was very sensitive to taste/smell and lost it
11:30 PM Tom_L: that was a bad discovery for her
11:30 PM Tom_L: now she likes foods she hated before and vise versa
11:31 PM Tom_L: still not 100% back
11:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i could still taste salty, and smell sulfur compounds and chlorine
11:31 PM Tom_L: yeah
11:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I finished off some really awful beers back then
11:32 PM Tom_L: i could tell it was different but it didn't bother me as much
11:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: tasted like funny water
11:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and i could tell if it was something sweet i was drinking but not by taste, sweet seemed to have a different texture
11:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: like the liquid was thicker than water and spread over the tongue differently
11:33 PM Tom_L: internal organ flutter was another symptom i've heard of
11:34 PM Tom_L: i didn't experience it but heard of some that did
11:34 PM Tom_L: like a muscle twitch
11:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i had an odd headache that was sort of like a buzzing but not tinnitus
11:36 PM Tom_L: neither of the boys ever got it
11:36 PM Tom_L: one tested positive but 3 days later was negative
11:36 PM Tom_L: probably a false positive
11:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my son had it, lasted 2 months, cough and weakness
11:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: how long have you had symptoms?
11:40 PM Tom_L: i had it a few months back and i'm back to the new normal i guess you would say
11:41 PM Tom_L: i was off 4 weeks and after that noticed small improvements every day or so
11:41 PM Tom_L: went back on 1/2 workload for another month
11:41 PM Tom_L: i'd get exhausted
11:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had it in August, better by late October, then tested neg in Nov but had symptoms, then positive again in mid Jan
11:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just started feeling better in the past few weeks
11:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but my test in November was by a testing center being investigated for scamming thousands and tossing out tests
11:44 PM Tom_L: i think late march because we'd just come back from Ga
11:46 PM Tom_L: no that's wrong it was mid Sept... i was thinking of something else
