01:10 AM Deejay: moin
01:41 AM randy: morning
02:30 AM MrSunshine: finaly an 7i92M ordered, just hoping it will turn up ... to get rid of this software stepgen nightmare =)
04:50 AM Tom_L: morning
05:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:53 AM MrSunshine: https://snipboard.io/86lHe4.jpg that latency test might be acceptable ? =)
06:53 AM MrSunshine: JT-Cave, was it you that had with the mesa cards to do ? is linuxcnc at all sensetive to latency on the computer after you have one installed? =)
06:55 AM JT-Cave: not sure I understand the first question... terrible latency can be bad
07:41 AM * JT-Cave notes that the Germans are out translating silopolis[m]
08:01 AM silopolis[m]: > * <@JT-Cave:libera.chat> notes that the Germans are out translating silopolis
08:01 AM silopolis[m]: Translating mesact ?
08:02 AM JT-Cave: any one of them, I just wrote a python script to get the translations from one and add them to the rest
08:02 AM JT-Cave: mesact would be a good one to do
08:08 AM silopolis[m]: JT-Cave: I'm neck deep into lcnc docs translation work so that we finally manage to get the po4a+weblate system running
08:08 AM silopolis[m]: Once done, I'll take a break from lcnc docs and work on mesact french translation...
08:09 AM silopolis[m]: But I'm dying of still not having been able to order my board(s)...
08:15 AM JT-Cave: no problem I was just pushing your button lol
08:19 AM perry_j1987: good morning
08:46 AM satiowadahc[m]: First 5 Axis spindle is on its way... slightly terrified of learning to program this thing, it can cut itself apart in so many ways...
08:47 AM satiowadahc[m]: or the gantry.. or the z axis.. or the power line to the z axis motor...
09:01 AM Thorhian: Hey guys, in my machines .ini file, I have the HOME_OFFSET set to 300, and HOME to 280. This is all on the Z axis. However, when I home the Z axis, it returns to 0 after homing. I don't want that lol, I want it to stay up at 280.
09:01 AM Thorhian: Any idea on how to fix this?
09:24 AM unterhaus_: I needed a pushbutton for my lathe and the ones I got from amazon filled me with sadness. Wish I had gotten an AB from ebay to begin with. Cost a little more, but I didn't even think about it
09:30 AM Thorhian: An AB? I have bought my pushbuttons from Automation Direct.
09:36 AM unterhaus_: had to match
10:03 AM MrSunshine: hmm reinstalled my linuxcnc and now my "home all" button is gone and i have to home each axis individualy ?
10:04 AM MrSunshine: before i had X/Y auto home, then i had to home Z manualy as i do not have a sensor on Z yet
10:04 AM satiowadahc[m]: which UI?
10:06 AM MrSunshine: axis
10:33 AM JT-Shop: unterhaus_, what kind of AB 800 do you need?
10:33 AM JT-Shop: Thorhian, typically Z all the way up is Z0 and everything below is Z-n
11:05 AM unterhaus_: JT-Shop, I have one on the way, but thanks
11:14 AM JT-Cave: ok
11:15 AM Loetmichel_: *snicker* Just drove my co-worker home. He asking "why is it that i am sweating like a pig here in germany at barely 30°C and are more or less dry at 40°C back at home in africa?" [$me teaching mode]: Relative air humidity, evaporating energy, Swamp cooler, dew point... [/teaching mode] him: "Ah, THATS where the water on the steel door at home comes from in the morning. I always thought
11:15 AM Loetmichel_: thats from the earth or something!" :)
11:39 AM roycroft: 30 degrees in early april seems rather warm to me
11:39 AM roycroft: we're forecast to hit 24 later this week, and that would almost tie the all-time record high for the day
11:40 AM Thorhian: JT-Cave: I changed it to do that. Things seem to be fine now.
11:43 AM JT-Cave: good deal
11:55 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:00 PM Thorhian: I've lost my ER32 Collet wrench so I'm printing a temporary one atm lol.
01:01 PM XXCoder: nice
01:01 PM XXCoder: thats nice thing about having 3d printer
01:05 PM Thorhian: Indeed lol. I'll print a toolsetter post next. Better than nothing. Pretty sure ER32 collets need quite a bit of torque according to their spec can get over 100 NM lol
01:05 PM Thorhian: There is not way I'm getting anywhere near that torque while holding the tool holder or trying to tighten it in the spindle lol.
01:06 PM Thorhian: I should say max torque anyways.
01:48 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: print a pattern for the wrench and cast in steel
01:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you just need a buddy with a foundry
02:25 PM t4nk_freenode: mill one out of stainless steel!
02:25 PM t4nk_freenode: just need a buddy with a mill ;)
02:26 PM t4nk_freenode: I just pre-drilled the holes for my bearing-holder-tubes
02:31 PM CloudEvil: Take a block of good steel and a file.
02:31 PM t4nk_freenode: just need a buddy with a block of good steel
02:31 PM t4nk_freenode: and another one with a file
02:37 PM t4nk_freenode: ok, about time to drill the bigger holes.
02:37 PM t4nk_freenode: (my buddy who has a drill is here)
02:59 PM t4nk_freenode: . done.
03:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: this says it is a "single axis" machine http://en.viamechanics.com/products/drill/722/
03:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ans also has feed rates for XY and Z?
03:20 PM DaViruz: i wonder what the deal is with the minimum Z-axis feed rate is as well
03:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah wierd
03:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yet been in business since 1968
03:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so not some cut-n-paste specs
03:23 PM * JT-Shop knows what a sharp bench plane feels like now
03:25 PM XXCoder: shaved something eh
03:26 PM JT-Shop: shaved some pine
03:26 PM JT-Shop: so thin you could see through it
03:26 PM XXCoder: nice
03:27 PM JT-Shop: I have an old #4 but the body is cracked at the mouth :(
03:27 PM XXCoder: cant solder it?
03:27 PM JT-Shop: solder is for electricity
03:28 PM XXCoder: no, other kind. not weld
03:28 PM JT-Shop: are you thinking of brazing?
03:29 PM XXCoder: its also called soldering. dont ask me why
03:29 PM XXCoder: https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/sites/7/images/member_albums/44290/543426.jpg example
03:29 PM XXCoder: can also be used to repair crack
03:30 PM JT-Shop: works good on large surface areas like that manifold but not where mine is broken
03:30 PM XXCoder: hmmm
03:30 PM XXCoder: well can always do it tp stop cracking from growing
03:31 PM JT-Shop: we called that silver brazing in the ship yard
03:31 PM XXCoder: would need to flatten bottom after that again though
03:31 PM XXCoder: be back in bit gonna walk the woof noisemaker
03:35 PM roycroft: jt-shop: that can be a difficult repair, but the plane is a perfect candidate to convert to a scrub plane
03:35 PM JT-Shop: yea I don't think it can be repaired even with a cast iron type of rod
03:36 PM roycroft: but to make it a scrub plane you need to open up the mouth a fair amount, and grind a significant radius on the end of the cutter
03:36 PM JT-Shop: are you thinking fasten a bar to the broken side?
03:36 PM roycroft: i don't know how it's broken
03:37 PM roycroft: but you don't need much front support for a scrub plane
03:37 PM JT-Shop: I'll take a photo
03:38 PM XXCoder: silver is better from what I see, for repairing cast ion
03:38 PM XXCoder: its not as strong, but if something broken, it'll make it work again for quite a while
03:38 PM roycroft: the other thing you can do is use it for parts
03:38 PM CloudEvil: Or bronze can be just fine.
03:38 PM XXCoder: one additional step maybe, is to drill the very end of crack, so it cant extend
03:39 PM roycroft: get a no. 4 body off ebay, and install the frog and handles and cutter from that one
03:39 PM XXCoder: dont know how good the drill tip is
03:39 PM roycroft: repair also depends on the material it's made of
03:39 PM roycroft: if it's ductile iron it is more repairable than regular cast iron
03:41 PM roycroft: unfortunately, the easy way to test what kind of iron it is is to drop it onto a concrete floor from bench height
03:41 PM roycroft: if it's ductile, it will take a little dent at most
03:41 PM roycroft: if it's cast, it will shatter
03:41 PM roycroft: but if it's cast it would be very difficult to repair anyway
03:44 PM Rab: CaptHindsight[m], context from the rest of the product line indicates that they're talking about the number of spindles.
03:47 PM JT-Shop: it's a Bailey #3 not a #4, the handyman made in usa is a #4
03:48 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/planes/bailey-3-01.jpg
03:48 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/planes/bailey-3-02.jpg
03:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Rab: yeah I saw a picture of a 12 spindle machine that labelled as 12-axis
03:49 PM JT-Shop: I do need a scrub plane when I'm getting rough cut ready for the jointer
03:51 PM roycroft: if it's a bailey then it's probably ductile iron
03:52 PM roycroft: and that may be repairable
03:53 PM roycroft: it would be hard to keep it flat while welding/brazing it
03:53 PM XXCoder: he'd have to re-flatten it roy
03:53 PM roycroft: even if you preheat, clamp it really firmly, and leave it clamped until it cools
03:53 PM XXCoder: looks like it should be done anyway
03:54 PM roycroft: yes, but it would likely warp enough that it would be hard to flatten
03:54 PM XXCoder: true
03:54 PM enleth: definitely a good excuse to get some practice brazing small stuff, even if it fails in the end
03:54 PM enleth: and it just might work
03:54 PM roycroft: but even in that case it would make a good scrub plane
03:54 PM XXCoder: definitely enl
03:55 PM enleth: brazing on a reinforcing plate on the outside might be a cheaty way out of some problems
03:56 PM enleth: that side would no longer be a guiding surface, but even without it the plane is still useful for many tasks
03:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: replace with CNC shaper, you know you want one
03:58 PM XXCoder: enleth: wouldnt brazing it from inside, with steel block outside be better?
03:58 PM XXCoder: that way it is easily re-flattable
03:59 PM enleth: XXCoder: yes, *if* the skinny cross-section of the braze joint is enough to hold it together
03:59 PM enleth: if not, a permanent reinforcing plate definitely is
04:00 PM enleth: XXCoder: or did you mean, braze the crack from the inside *and* add a reinforcement outside at the same time?
04:00 PM enleth: in which case this is exactly what I had in mind
04:01 PM XXCoder: nah block outside acting as braze metal "stopper"
04:01 PM XXCoder: so outside wall still is flat
04:01 PM roycroft: if you vee the break out from both sides there will be plenty of surface for the braze
04:02 PM roycroft: and should be fairly straightforward to mount the plane body in a mill after the brazing to clean up the sides
04:02 PM XXCoder: probably use drill wire brusher to clear out bad derbis and such, and maybe even grind edges a little for better hold. not sure what exactly would be best to shape for that
04:03 PM JT-Shop: I have a pretty rough bailey #5 that would make a good scrub plane but it needs a lot of work and a new rear handle
04:05 PM enleth: XXCoder: I'm not sure what the backing block would have to be made of to survive the heat and not get brazed onto the workpiece
04:05 PM XXCoder: true. some surfacant?
04:06 PM enleth: I don't think I've ever seen backing used for brazing, it's always built up and then machined back to size
04:07 PM roycroft: yes, that's the usualy way with brazing
04:07 PM roycroft: a no. 5 would be a better size for a scrub plane than a no. 3, for sure
04:07 PM XXCoder: wonder if expoxy works for scrub plane lol
04:07 PM enleth: perhaps you could use a thick block of aluminum with TIG brazing, where heat is much more localized and controlled
04:07 PM roycroft: and making a tote for it would be a fun project
04:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JB weld pro version

04:26 PM roycroft: keith rucker is pretty competent

04:34 PM JT-Shop: https://www.goantiques.com/stanley-plane-handle-52012297
04:35 PM roycroft: the woodriver planes are decent
04:35 PM roycroft: but veritas and lie-nielsen are better
04:36 PM Tom_L: gettin the plain facts on planes today i see
04:36 PM roycroft: if you want a really good smoother, a norris in good condition really can't be beat
04:38 PM roycroft: or a spiers, of course
04:38 PM roycroft: a good english/scottish infill plane
04:39 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143212881295
04:39 PM roycroft: there you go
04:39 PM Tom_L: uk
04:39 PM roycroft: not only is it infill, it has a bronze body
04:39 PM roycroft: which is exceedingly rare for a norris
04:39 PM roycroft: but makes it an even better plane
04:40 PM XXCoder: wonder how hard it is to make one lol
04:40 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, let us know
04:40 PM Tom_L: lots of pics too
04:40 PM roycroft: i have a bronze casting that i bought to make one years ago
04:40 PM roycroft: it's a lot of work
04:40 PM roycroft: maybe i'll finish it some day
04:42 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Planes.jpeg
04:42 PM roycroft: you can see the casting in the middle at the top, above the no. 4
04:43 PM XXCoder: interesting
04:43 PM roycroft: there's a lot of work to do on the casting still, and i have many hours of my time invested in it already
04:44 PM roycroft: and then i have to make the infill pieces, which will be another big pile of work
04:46 PM roycroft: but woodriver planes are decent and a good value
04:46 PM roycroft: although a no. 1 is an almost useless plane
04:46 PM roycroft: the main people who buy no. 1s are folks who are just trying to complete there set of standard bench planes
04:46 PM roycroft: nobody actually uses them
04:47 PM Tom_L: like golf clubs?
04:48 PM Tom_L: all you really need is a #3 wood, 9 iron and a putter :)
04:50 PM t4nk_freenode: actually all you need is a buddy who has some clubs :b
04:50 PM roycroft: i'd carry a 5 iron as well, at least
04:50 PM roycroft: for irons, probably a 3, 5, 7, and 9 would be a good starter set
04:50 PM roycroft: only pros need more than that
04:55 PM Thorhian: CaptHindsight[m] t4nk_freenode I managed to use some steel laying around in the garage and used an angle grinder to make a C shaped wrench. The 3D printed one totally couldn't handle the job.
04:58 PM t4nk_freenode: heh, yeah, in my experience it would tend to break from getting it off the printbed
04:58 PM t4nk_freenode: but well done then
05:12 PM Thorhian: XD
05:13 PM XXCoder: lol
05:18 PM _unreal_: finally all the updates BS is done.
05:20 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
05:20 PM t4nk_freenode: that only took 2 days ;)
05:20 PM _unreal_: oh I cant wait.....
05:21 PM _unreal_: if any one of these stocks I have runs I'm going to be VERY well off....
05:21 PM t4nk_freenode: can I be your friend, when it happens??
05:22 PM roycroft: you've been saying that for a long time
05:22 PM roycroft: fell free to continue dreaming
05:22 PM _unreal_: lol I made an error last year and sold SAVA too soon
05:22 PM roycroft: but please do not make any financial decisions based on your dream, unless and until it becomes a reality
05:22 PM _unreal_: I had 1400 shares at $2.95 5-6 months later ran to $148
05:23 PM _unreal_: still soo pissed
05:23 PM _unreal_: I could have made over 200k
05:23 PM _unreal_: hell last fall I made a STUPID error only because I forgot information
05:24 PM _unreal_: I had money I could spend at the time. One of my stocks MMTLP went live trading and sat at $.01 for $5 min. I could have spent $250 picked up 25k shares. and the next day it ran to over $3
05:24 PM _unreal_: sigh
05:24 PM t4nk_freenode: so what happened to the 1400 shares in the end?
05:24 PM _unreal_: I sold for $100 profit
05:24 PM t4nk_freenode: in total?
05:24 PM _unreal_: all kinds of bad news came out
05:25 PM t4nk_freenode: and how much commission did you pay? (twice)
05:25 PM _unreal_: the US does not do that if its on the nasdaq, or NYSE
05:26 PM _unreal_: OTC market may charge fees infact does
05:28 PM Thorhian: I'm finally using my milling machine again. Trying to mill in a pocket on the bed so that the mounting bold will clear the surface, making room for my vise.
06:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Stuart took his youtubes down
06:01 PM _unreal_: who?
06:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I was looking for his 5-axis Cincinnati videos with LCNC
06:03 PM XXCoder: whos stuart
06:03 PM _unreal_: I asked for
06:03 PM _unreal_: first
06:04 PM XXCoder: and?
06:04 PM XXCoder: its not a race
06:04 PM _unreal_: bs :)
06:04 PM _unreal_: ;)
06:04 PM _unreal_: at are old ages everything is a snails race
06:04 PM _unreal_: lol
06:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: longtime LCNC user and dev
06:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he retired recntly
06:05 PM _unreal_: how about a nick handle or name
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: held a couple LCNC meetups in Wichita at his shop
06:07 PM XXCoder: ahh nice, though wonder why deleted
06:08 PM _unreal_: I forget his name but there was a guy who added a lot to CNCZONE.COM :( passed away from cancer like 10y ago :(
06:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?EMC_Fest_2009 and again 2012 or so
06:09 PM _unreal_: all his stuff is still up though
06:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: man has it been 10 years already!
06:09 PM _unreal_: we are old
06:09 PM _unreal_: hell I build my first cnc machine back in what 2002
06:10 PM _unreal_: err finished bilding
06:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 2013
06:10 PM _unreal_: makes me wonder? I gave it a way to a ""friend"" years ago.
06:11 PM _unreal_: have not spoken to him in like .....
06:11 PM _unreal_: 15 yars
06:11 PM _unreal_: jeez
06:11 PM _unreal_: and he was a 2 pack smoke back then
06:11 PM _unreal_: 2 pack smoker
06:11 PM t4nk_freenode: 15 yarns! I feel like Battlestar Galactica!
06:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/linuxcnc-formerly-emc2-/70968-emc2-dependability.html#post548522
06:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is there a wayback machine for youtubes?
06:13 PM _unreal_: hehe I suddenly want to play counter strike
06:14 PM _unreal_: tell me if this works. https://www.cnczone.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=945
06:16 PM _unreal_: does that link work?
06:16 PM XXCoder: registered only
06:16 PM t4nk_freenode: not for me, because I'm not (going to be) registered.
06:17 PM _unreal_: https://www.cnczone.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/945/title/first-home-made-cnc-machine/cat/500
06:17 PM _unreal_: :S ish maybe?
06:17 PM t4nk_freenode: not for me, because I'm not (going to be) registered.
06:17 PM XXCoder: registered only
06:17 PM _unreal_: and t4nk_freenode I'm surprised. CNCZONE has a huge arcive of lcnc and grbl
06:18 PM _unreal_: if that one does not work I need to find the publick link
06:18 PM t4nk_freenode: they can share that huge archive with their registered users then... not with me ;)
06:19 PM _unreal_: try that
06:19 PM _unreal_: https://www.cnczone.com/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/3850

06:21 PM _unreal_: I dont know what that means. can you see the image
06:22 PM t4nk_freenode: I can see a 3x3pixel.... something
06:22 PM enleth: _unreal_: you can use the incognito mode to check yourself
06:22 PM _unreal_: https://www.cnczone.com/gallery/data/500/3850first_cnc_machine.jpg
06:22 PM _unreal_: sigh FINE here be a bitch
06:22 PM t4nk_freenode: but of course, when we 43 unregistered users click the link... we have to register before we can ee it
06:22 PM XXCoder: viewing acheived
06:22 PM enleth: the last one works
06:23 PM roycroft: i see what looks like a messy cnc router in the middle of a kitchen
06:23 PM _unreal_: :) should have said bitches
06:23 PM _unreal_: hehehe
06:23 PM roycroft: that does not appear very sanitary to me
06:23 PM XXCoder: good that cnc machine is written on it, otherwise id not know what it is
06:23 PM _unreal_: YES IN THE kitchen
06:23 PM _unreal_: back in my 20
06:23 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
06:23 PM _unreal_: 20's
06:23 PM _unreal_: GOD..... 20 years ago
06:23 PM roycroft: when you were poor and had to eat sawdust?
06:23 PM _unreal_: or so
06:23 PM _unreal_: YES
06:23 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm already glad it didn't say 'cmc masheen'
06:24 PM _unreal_: That machine made me like $5k
06:24 PM _unreal_: I was etching TILES with it
06:24 PM _unreal_: I was etching TILES with it
06:25 PM _unreal_: some where not online... I have photos ofthe work I did with it.
06:25 PM * roycroft wonders what _unreal_ was etching with it
06:25 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
06:25 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I'll never tell
06:25 PM t4nk_freenode: I guess it would make a good tile-etching-masheen
06:25 PM _unreal_: very slow
06:26 PM _unreal_: very very slow and made a lot of heat. that was before CHOPPER drives were less then $300 USD for LOW power even.
06:26 PM _unreal_: stepper motor contollers
06:26 PM enleth: nice return for what looks like stuff swept up from under the garage workbench and hastily bodged together into a rought shape of a CNC machine
06:27 PM t4nk_freenode: lol enleth
06:27 PM t4nk_freenode: it even seems to have a doorbell on top of the right post
06:28 PM enleth: t4nk_freenode: boards, angle iron, allthread and a dremel that fell off the back of the bench ten years ago - all checks out
06:28 PM t4nk_freenode: but seriously; I like the 23m long drill bit!
06:28 PM _unreal_: that was the ESTOP
06:29 PM enleth: it's cool that it actually server its purpose and probably financed the purchase of its replacement
06:29 PM _unreal_: non of you have noticed it yet. but the computer in the top right hand corner was an "IOPENER"
06:29 PM enleth: *served
06:29 PM _unreal_: AND HOW
06:29 PM t4nk_freenode: no, you were right, severed ;)
06:29 PM _unreal_: I made 5k with it back in the first fiew years o the 2k
06:29 PM _unreal_: of
06:30 PM t4nk_freenode: should have contributed it to some form of eddication
06:31 PM _unreal_: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-Opener
06:31 PM _unreal_: I still have one left sitting under my desk in front of me
06:32 PM _unreal_: hehe it was top of the line back then
06:32 PM _unreal_: after upgrades
06:34 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, I gave it to....
06:34 PM _unreal_: well I hate to say it but
06:34 PM XXCoder: trash?
06:34 PM _unreal_: a guy who knows more about linux then ALLLLLLL of us. even back then.
06:34 PM _unreal_: but he was also a heavy smoker and drinker
06:35 PM t4nk_freenode: what could possibly have you assess my linux-knowledge, bar from a fried brain?
06:35 PM _unreal_: and had gov. spy fear issues :S... I have not spoken to him in for ever. hell I dont even know if he is still alive. last I knew he had purchased a house. and that wa after I had I had given him that machine years ago
06:38 PM _unreal_: ahh.... I lived with him roomies for like 2 years and he was the CFO in one company and the head comp. tech in an other company. he made a s....h..... load of money but had psych issues.
06:39 PM _unreal_: he got an apartent stayed there or what 6 months. asked me to help him move. he purchased a house for like $30k CASH. in "east bumb fuck" in Maine. and I have not heard from him sense.
06:39 PM _unreal_: sigh
06:40 PM XXCoder: dang that house pronbably 10x more valuable now
06:40 PM XXCoder: if not more
06:40 PM _unreal_: prob.
06:40 PM enleth: _unreal_: duh, obviously he needed some under-the-garage-workbench garbage for his new empty house, so he got a preassembled kit
06:40 PM _unreal_: wow. I have had 5 shots of rum so far
06:41 PM _unreal_: heh enleth he showed me his collection of CRT monotors
06:41 PM _unreal_: monitors
06:41 PM _unreal_: last time I spoke with hinm :S
06:41 PM enleth: oh, so he wasn't short on garbage then
06:41 PM t4nk_freenode: lol
06:41 PM _unreal_: nope
06:41 PM _unreal_: well depend on how you look at it
06:42 PM _unreal_: no lcd can COMPETE with a CRT when it comes to "refresh/lag"
06:42 PM XXCoder: hopefully hes not a skelaton under fallen over hoarder stuff
06:43 PM _unreal_: AND I use to be a GOD at quake. and he smoked me...:S I hate to admit it. then again he was younger and learned the "bunny hopping" method in quake
06:43 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, I dont know
06:43 PM CloudEvil: There are many, many LCDs that are significantly lower lag than your average CRT now.
06:43 PM CloudEvil: Due mainly to framerate.
06:43 PM _unreal_: in the next few weeks/months I may reach out to find out.
06:43 PM t4nk_freenode: and those lcd's are probably larger than 14" too ;)
06:44 PM enleth: _unreal_: that used to be true for a long time, but it no longer is
06:44 PM CloudEvil: For a Loooong time, you couldn't get a taller screen than a 20.3" 4:3 display
06:44 PM enleth: _unreal_: 120Hz LCDs are entering mainstream market by now, thanks to gamers
06:44 PM _unreal_: enleth, there are fast LCD's now but crt still kicks ass peirod
06:45 PM t4nk_freenode: weight == quality, always has been
06:45 PM _unreal_: eeee....errrr.... "?yes" t4nk_freenode
06:45 PM XXCoder: enleth: I got my 2 lcd montiors not for latency, but for color range
06:46 PM XXCoder: mine is fairly expensive artist accurate color reproduction montiors
06:46 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, cheers
06:46 PM XXCoder: thankfully on time, dont think you can buy those now
06:46 PM enleth: _unreal_: not when you need a 32" 4k screen and don't want to shop for a desk at the construction department of your hardware store or wherever they sell marble plinths for garden statues
06:46 PM _unreal_: I dont have anything less then a 22" wide.. display
06:46 PM t4nk_freenode: XXCoder and _unreal_, sitting in a treeeee...
06:47 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, "computerinnng I.n.g......
06:47 PM XXCoder: t4nk_freenode: ?
06:48 PM XXCoder: anyway
06:48 PM _unreal_: HEH
06:48 PM XXCoder: AUS PA248QV is the model
06:48 PM enleth: (32" 4k specifically is my go-to for a work screen, 4xFullHD at a very comfortable for me DPI)
06:48 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, I need a bigger screen.. mine's only 32" at the moment, it has grown small on me
06:49 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, when I MOVE. I'm going to setup my new house with LCD displays. I have already promised my daughter I'm going to setup 4-several gaming systems for her
06:49 PM _unreal_: WHEN it happens
06:49 PM _unreal_: :S when
06:49 PM XXCoder: my gaming device is nintendo switch
06:50 PM t4nk_freenode: if it's going to be as swift as her own cnc masheen, then she might be playing a game when she retires
06:50 PM _unreal_: dude. I purcahsed upgrades for my old NES's. I need to installed the replacement cartrages sockets for the NES's I have
06:50 PM _unreal_: I have yet to deal ith themn
06:50 PM _unreal_: I have 3 NES systems
06:50 PM _unreal_: never touched but have regardless
06:50 PM CloudEvil: I have as my secondary display a 43" 4k, vertically.
06:51 PM _unreal_: I did build my daugher a cnc amchine
06:51 PM _unreal_: wow I have had a lot of rum...
06:52 PM _unreal_: freaking hell google drive it taking for ever to load
06:52 PM enleth: CloudEvil: no issues with viewing angle? many LCDs are still made with a smaller vertical viewing angle range
06:52 PM CloudEvil: Nope.
06:53 PM _unreal_: sigh.... I think alot of my issue is there is now caching becuase I was with out house internet for so long.
06:53 PM CloudEvil: Viewing angle varies by some +-30 degrees I guess.
06:54 PM _unreal_: O....M.....G...... THIS IS TAKING FOR EVER...
06:54 PM _unreal_: wiating for google
06:54 PM _unreal_: or the internet I dont know
06:54 PM enleth: granted, there are also LCDs that look basically like a backlit printout already, at any angle including almost completely parallel to the surface
06:54 PM _unreal_: the machine I build for my daughter https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hnd8mD4u5KKsIrPQOX7oN4ZlZ37xEnPs/view?usp=sharing
06:54 PM CloudEvil: enleth: I want more curved monitors.
06:55 PM CloudEvil: I'd really quite like a 1.5m radius of curvature on that 43", not 3m or so.
06:55 PM _unreal_: I telll yall this.... and damn I'm drunk ish....
06:56 PM enleth: CloudEvil: that's something I've considered very hard before my last monitor purchase but opted to go for a regular one for now - wasn't sure I'd actually like it
06:56 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, you have to be, _unreal_, posting images via google and expecting us to see them
06:57 PM enleth: t4nk_freenode: I just checked in incognito mode, shows just fine without signing in
06:57 PM CloudEvil: I would like to be able to use a 43" or so monitor at a distance very considerably closer to it than 43", for multiple windows.
06:57 PM _unreal_: t4nk_freenode, only you are afraid of what liberty has already been stripped from you.
06:57 PM _unreal_: LOL
06:57 PM CloudEvil: Curved larger monitors have mostly gone away other than the very shallow ones
06:58 PM enleth: CloudEvil: although I imagine I could benefit from this, as I have the monitor mounted on a pretty long articulated arm, so it hangs right above the keyboard, very close to the front edge of the desk and my eyes
06:58 PM t4nk_freenode: enleth, ah... shows here now too... apparently just took years to load, after granting 400 permissions to umatrix
06:59 PM t4nk_freenode: though ... the incognito window asked for
06:59 PM t4nk_freenode: XHR permissions, and the normal window didn't
06:59 PM t4nk_freenode: strange
07:00 PM enleth: CloudEvil: the aforementioned 32" 4k is sitting at 20" from my eyes and it's perfect
07:03 PM roycroft: my 27" displays on my imac are just past arm's reach from where i sit
07:04 PM roycroft: the primary display is 5k-ish, and the other two are 4k
07:05 PM roycroft: 5120x2880 for the primary, and 3840x2160 for the ancillaries

09:53 PM XXCoder: making progress I see
09:55 PM skunkworks: slowly...
09:55 PM skunkworks: then I also got a project car... oof...
09:56 PM XXCoder: doh
09:56 PM skunkworks: 2017 jetta 1.4l turbo. a bit of front end damage..
09:57 PM skunkworks: but if all goes well - It should replace my 2006 toyota corolla with 250k
09:57 PM skunkworks: for hopefully <$4k
09:57 PM XXCoder: nice
09:58 PM skunkworks: it'l buff right out..
09:58 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/BKADdeHWpAM8xGgv7
10:00 PM roycroft: you can just 3d print some body parts to cover that up
10:03 PM skunkworks: roycroft: well - I might have to print some clips and such. So much plastic raining down as I was taking it apart..
10:03 PM XXCoder: it almost looks like painted picture when in browser mode (not full size)
10:03 PM XXCoder: it seriously looks like painting, expecially engine area
10:03 PM skunkworks: lol - I am not that good..
10:04 PM skunkworks: it has 60k on it.. 5 speed manual
10:04 PM skunkworks: and! a full tank of gas!
10:04 PM skunkworks: I have an intake + inter-cooler coming from germany...
10:05 PM skunkworks: The intake is plastic and got hit just hard enough to crack it.
10:07 PM skunkworks: the intake is held on by about 5 bolts..

10:09 PM Tom_L: i kinda messed up the top part but i filed the step down and i think it will work ok
10:09 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: neat! what is it?
10:09 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A9_New/MODS/fixture/A9_Fixture14.jpg
10:10 PM Tom_L: the step grabbed the material
10:10 PM Tom_L: but i think i fixed it
10:10 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Can_holder_assy.jpg
10:10 PM Tom_L: the tabs go inside the tube
10:10 PM Tom_L: around the plastic piece
10:11 PM Tom_L: i still need to do a couple mods to it
10:11 PM Tom_L: add a block to the top to clear the dowel pins
10:12 PM Tom_L: i could have used thicker material but that's what i grabbed
10:12 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, is that a motor or resolver?
10:13 PM skunkworks: Oh - I remember that - cool!
10:13 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: what part? motor/resolver?
10:13 PM Tom_L: i kinda messed up on my width calculations
10:14 PM Tom_L: the round thing sitting on the lathe
10:14 PM Tom_L: not the tool mount
10:14 PM skunkworks: oh - stepping motor
10:14 PM Tom_L: ahh ok
10:14 PM skunkworks: ass end up
10:14 PM Tom_L: he's been beating the tabs down with a hammer
10:15 PM roycroft: awesome
10:15 PM roycroft: netflix just added a "short movies" category
10:16 PM roycroft: last saturday pete davidson did a digital short on snl called "short ass movies"
10:16 PM roycroft: where he bemoaned movies that run longer than an hour and 40 minutes or so
10:16 PM Tom_L: ADD ?
10:16 PM roycroft: it was one of his better shorts, and it's great that netflix picked up on it
10:17 PM roycroft: well
10:17 PM roycroft: it's hard to sit through a 3-1/2 hour film without a pee break
10:17 PM roycroft: so it's not just add
10:17 PM Tom_L: oh i suppose
10:17 PM Tom_L: you will like that cast away one
10:18 PM Tom_L: only he can go a good part of the movie with no words spoken
10:18 PM roycroft: i'm pondering cancelling netflix
10:18 PM roycroft: there's not that much on it that i haven't seen these days, and they just jacked the price upa gain
10:19 PM Tom_L: i don't think i have netflix
10:19 PM skunkworks: I have disney, netflix and prime.. kids watch them all.
10:20 PM roycroft: netflix even call the category "shortassmovies"
10:21 PM Tom_L: i'm not too sure what i do have now
10:21 PM Tom_L: prime i know
10:21 PM roycroft: i have an antenna on my roof
10:21 PM Tom_L: she got yt with no ads for a trial
10:21 PM roycroft: that's how i get most of my stuff
10:21 PM Tom_L: i have one in the attic but i'm not using it right now
10:22 PM Tom_L: got HBO with the phone package
10:22 PM Tom_L: never watch it
10:25 PM Tom_L: i did find out my mill will handle a .375 cutter nicely
10:26 PM Tom_L: .1 depth full width
10:30 PM roycroft: my mill could only take about a 0.030" cut with that size cutter in steel
10:30 PM roycroft: with the old motor
10:30 PM roycroft: i haven't pushed it since i upgraded the motor last year
10:39 PM Tom_L: i haven't tried steel since i swapped motors
10:44 PM roycroft: i don't think i have either
10:44 PM roycroft: i haven't used the mill much since i installed the new motor
