12:17 AM roycroft: i'm watching the 1965 film of the battle of the bulge
12:25 AM roycroft: i never realised that the ardienne forest in belgium is actually a desert
01:15 AM Deejay: moin
02:24 AM randy: morning

04:56 AM Tom_L: morning
05:05 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:08 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, do you have any sort of part tumbler for debur?
05:08 AM Tom_L: thinking of coming up with something..
05:10 AM JT-Cave: no, but I've used and built them before
05:10 AM JT-Cave: vibratory or barrel tumbler
05:11 AM Tom_L: can't decide which one to make
05:11 AM Tom_L: vibratory is more effective
05:12 AM Tom_L: but i don't have high volume to deal with either
05:12 AM JT-Cave: have you looked at shell vibrator cleaners?
05:12 AM Tom_L: yeah
05:12 AM Tom_L: i know pretty much what's out there
05:12 AM Tom_L: my bud had a tabletop vibratory before he moved into his bigger shop then he got a free standing one
05:13 AM Tom_L: for mostly aluminum
05:13 AM Tom_L: he used cones and pyramid shape media
05:14 AM Tom_L: not sure how much walnut shells would do on aluminum
05:14 AM Tom_L: more for polishing i think
05:14 AM JT-Cave: we used rice hulls on nails
05:15 AM Tom_L: huh
05:15 AM Tom_L: dry?
05:15 AM Tom_L: i'm sure
05:15 AM JT-Cave: yes
05:16 AM JT-Cave: the rice hulls were mixed in with the nails in a tumbler I designed, it was a continuous flow through operation
05:16 AM Tom_L: no matter what it is, it'll have to be small due to space restraints
05:17 AM JT-Cave: understand
05:18 AM JT-Cave: the cleaners I built were pretty big lol
06:20 AM JT-Cave: have you looked at rock tumblers?
07:13 AM Tom_L: ye
07:13 AM Tom_L: s
08:55 AM satiowadahc[m]: Happy Friday!
10:35 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:43 AM jdh: I have a HF vibratory that I use for brass
10:43 AM jdh: With walnut shells
10:44 AM roycroft: i have one of those as well
10:45 AM roycroft: i usually have little ceramic triangles in it
10:45 AM roycroft: er
10:45 AM roycroft: pyramids
10:45 AM roycroft: i've not built a luxury yacht with it yet, though
12:22 PM roycroft: my iphone suddenly has a new feature called "optimised charging"
12:23 PM roycroft: which seems to mean that instead of its just charging up in a couple hours when it's plugged in, it now decides that it's going to spend several hours charging, and tells me when it anticipates it will be finished
12:24 PM roycroft: it was at 40% charge this morning when i woke up (at 6:30) and plugged into the charging dock in my office as i generally do in the morning
12:24 PM roycroft: it's usually finished charging by 8 at the latest, but today it is after 10 and it's still only 85% charged
12:25 PM roycroft: my habit is to charge it in the morning when i'm in my office drinking coffee, dealing with emails, etc.
12:25 PM roycroft: and then i carry the phone with me during the day, and since i'm on-call, i have to take it into my bedroom at night
12:26 PM roycroft: i was planning on working in my shop all day, starting early this morning, but the phone is not charged so i can't go there yet
12:26 PM roycroft: i may need to purchase an additional charger for my bedroom or the shop
12:26 PM roycroft: or apple can fix this stupidity
12:28 PM solarwind: How in the hell.... https://www.kijiji.ca/v-hand-tool/owen-sound/blacksmith-anvil-william-foster/1583605981
12:28 PM solarwind: How did this anvil break like that?
12:28 PM solarwind: I thought those old ones are generally forged steel which doesn't break like that?
12:30 PM solarwind: Also, finally found that TIG brazing on AC is the only thing that weird contaminated malleable iron part sticks to
12:32 PM solarwind: The electrode positive part of the cycle is visibly cleaning _something_ off of the surface, even though it was first freshly ground and cleaned with acetone. But AC with about 10-15% (+) balance was the key to making silicon bronze and aluminum bronze stick to it. Magical.
12:35 PM XXCoder: brittle with age and impacts
12:35 PM XXCoder: that or shop had fire
12:41 PM roycroft: ok
12:41 PM roycroft: apple have a mechanism to disable this stupid new charging protocol
12:41 PM roycroft: but they implemented it without warning people, and enabled it by default
12:41 PM roycroft: so fail and fail there
12:42 PM XXCoder: yea bet that sucks
12:42 PM solarwind: roycroft you can turn it off, but that option is indeed hidden deep in menus
12:42 PM XXCoder: I use phone so little I recharge my ohone once each 3-4 days
12:42 PM solarwind: It's there to prevent charging the battery up to 4.200V too early because that's very bad for li-ion cells. A full charge is the most stressful thing you can do to a li-ion cell. Well that and high temperature.
12:42 PM roycroft: yes, i just found it
12:43 PM roycroft: i understand why the did it
12:43 PM solarwind: I disable that feature and wrote an app to stop charging at 80%
12:43 PM roycroft: the fails are because they did not notify me that it was there, and that they turned it on without notifying me
12:43 PM roycroft: the problem is that i have a relatively small window to charge my phone every day
12:44 PM roycroft: and i need to carry it with me for the rest of the day
12:44 PM roycroft: and overnight
12:44 PM roycroft: it's jumped from 85% charge to 97% charge in just a few minutes, after i disabled that "feature"
12:45 PM solarwind: Yeah, but that's an error
12:45 PM solarwind: Once you do a few cycles to 100.00% charge, it'll recalibrate the battery fuel gauge
12:45 PM roycroft: if disabling optimised charging shortens the life of the battery, that's something i'll have to live with
12:45 PM solarwind: The charging algorithm for li-ion is constant current, constant voltage. The last part of the charge is the slowest in all cases
12:46 PM roycroft: i can't dock the phone for 5 hours/day to charge it
12:46 PM solarwind: Well yeah, that's totally fine. Just saying it's calibrating itself again so don't trust the fuel gauge for a few cycles
12:46 PM solarwind: source: am an electrical engineer
12:46 PM roycroft: i don't really care about that
12:47 PM roycroft: i just want it to charge until it says it's done, and i want that to happen in 90 minutes
12:47 PM solarwind: Yup it should do that now
12:47 PM roycroft: i hope so
12:48 PM roycroft: i don't know why this just started
12:48 PM roycroft: apple claim it was added with ios 13, but the os did not update last night
12:48 PM solarwind: It's their "
12:48 PM roycroft: it's been a while since it updated
12:48 PM solarwind: "machine learning" feature
12:48 PM roycroft: but the behavior change started last night
12:48 PM solarwind: it changes its charging rate based on what it thinks your usage is
12:48 PM solarwind: yeah it changes all the time
12:48 PM solarwind: I agree, it's really stupid
12:48 PM solarwind: or at the very least, poorly implemented
12:48 PM roycroft: i don't mine new features
12:49 PM solarwind: It's unpredictable just like you experienced. That's why I as well disabled it
12:49 PM roycroft: i do mind 1. not being notified of the new features and their implications, and 2. having the new features turned on automatically, again without notice
12:49 PM roycroft: it's cost me over 2 hours of shop time today so far
12:49 PM roycroft: and i have a lot of stuff to do in the shop today
12:50 PM roycroft: i also have a rather important phone call that i know is coming in today, and that i cannot afford to miss
12:50 PM roycroft: so heading to the shop without the phone is not an option
12:55 PM roycroft: i've decided that although it's not fully-charged, it's close enough to get me through the day, and it should be back on its regular schedule by tomorrow
12:55 PM roycroft: i should also say that while this is annoying, at least apple have a mechanism to turn it off
12:56 PM roycroft: it this were a microsoft phone there would likely not be - microsoft firmly believe that they *always* know what's best for the end user, and do not offer options
12:57 PM roycroft: apple also believe they are always right, but respect the end user's right to do things incorrectly, to a degree
12:57 PM roycroft: linux just hopes the end user knows what to do, and sometimes laughs when the user doesn't :)
12:57 PM solarwind: You really don't have a power supply nearby?
12:58 PM roycroft: not in the shop
12:58 PM solarwind: Or a portable battery powered "power bank" thing
12:58 PM roycroft: plus, i'll be making noise and i'll have headphones on, so i'll need to have the phone in my pocket, in vibrate mode
12:58 PM solarwind: It's not ideal, but it works
12:58 PM roycroft: if i can charge it in 90 minutes at 6am every day i'll be fine
12:58 PM roycroft: that's worked for me for years
03:21 PM roguish[m]: everyone having fun today..?????
03:21 PM roguish[m]: i've just been working on taxes.. oh joy.
03:21 PM roguish[m]: wish I got my money's worth.
03:23 PM djdelorie: hire better contractors? ;-)
03:23 PM roguish[m]: nuke DC
03:58 PM enleth: roguish[m]: "your" money, ha ha
04:47 PM roycroft: well, i'm finished with phase two of my dust collection refurbishment project
04:48 PM roycroft: and it sucks even more now
04:48 PM roycroft: it just keeps getting suckier and suckier whenever i change something
04:51 PM CloudEvil: Yay.
05:00 PM roycroft: wow
05:00 PM roycroft: workers at an amazon plant in new york just voted to unionize
05:00 PM roycroft: that's the first amazon plant to do so
05:01 PM roycroft: in staten island, of all places
05:01 PM Tom_L: you mean all the robots?
05:03 PM Tom_L: if it gets it here quicker for less i say go for it but i know better than that
05:05 PM roycroft: robots are people too :)

08:13 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqsOgGhIsPg&t=1s
08:14 PM XXCoder: looking
08:14 PM XXCoder: ohh watching
08:15 PM XXCoder: hah
08:15 PM XXCoder: its indeed exactly what is discribed
08:51 PM roycroft: i've seen several cube turning videos
09:09 PM * roycroft found some really nice, ripe, organic heirloom tomatoes at the market today, and is making a proper margherita pizza for the first time in a long time
09:09 PM roycroft: i usually skip the tomato slices other than in late summer
09:43 PM roycroft: so what to believe
09:43 PM roycroft: sara palin announced she's running for congress
09:43 PM roycroft: but today is 1 april

11:20 PM XXCoder: lol great one
11:53 PM roycroft: if you enjoy forging videos, this is quite different and excellent:
11:53 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9nMdPAjWkE
11:53 PM roycroft: the guy makes damascus-like steel blades with layers of copper
11:55 PM XXCoder: ah thought it'd be that video but its niot
11:56 PM roycroft: it's beautiful work
11:56 PM XXCoder: sadly one I subbed to, he havent posted a video for while now
11:57 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/1Ldvbm3D7I0 hah. hand tool resuce, on best smell for penetrating tool
11:57 PM XXCoder: now it covers TWO senses I dont have
