06:42 AM Loetmichel_: *harrrumph* copying 31GB from a 32 gb SD card to a 256GB card with 2 USB2.0 adapters takes aaaages... well, at least the phone will have enough space for more audiobooks afterwards ;)
08:43 AM wellindex: can you still git clone using git clone git://github.com/linuxcnc/linuxcnc.git linuxcnc-dev ?
09:34 AM JT-Cave: yup
09:44 AM enleth: wellindex: it would have been faster to check than to ask, to be honest
09:45 AM wellindex: outdated documentation sorry

01:40 PM roycroft: it's definitely time to look for a new job
01:41 PM roycroft: my boss broke a website yesterday that he claims is critical to our revenue stream, and that without it he cannot survive
01:41 PM roycroft: i spent all day yesterday and all of today so far fixing it
01:41 PM XXCoder: if its that critical its literally matter of minutes. and 2 days ouch
01:41 PM roycroft: i finally got it working, and when checking its functionality, i saw that the most recent order was placed on 21 june 2021, for $7.95
01:42 PM XXCoder: dont sound very critical
01:42 PM roycroft: if that is what is driving the revenue stream then i need to buy stock in red ink manufacturer
01:44 PM XXCoder: how can company stay up if its been months since last order?
01:44 PM roycroft: xxcoder: it's a wordpress site, which is fine
01:44 PM roycroft: but he's hacked on the code so much it's hard to recoginise it as wordpress
01:44 PM roycroft: and he denies that he's changed anything
01:44 PM roycroft: his hacks are what broke it, of course
01:45 PM XXCoder: geez
01:45 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZqaTsbDcgU robots in space
01:45 PM XXCoder: you cant hide baldness from barber, nor hacks from programmer or IT guy
01:45 PM CloudEvil: (canadarm motion holding astronauts)
01:45 PM roycroft: i've been trying to train him to use version control and to do backups and to develop test suites for literally decades
01:46 PM roycroft: but his coding style is almost like dd if=/dev/random of=mycode.php count=137
01:46 PM perry_j1987: haha
01:46 PM XXCoder: lol
01:46 PM perry_j1987: thats pretty funny
01:49 PM roycroft: i decided to take a break from that work and do something simple
01:49 PM perry_j1987: get him setup with virtualbox
01:49 PM roycroft: the non-profit on whose board i serve have an annual election every october
01:49 PM perry_j1987: and fire off snapshot befor eany change
01:50 PM roycroft: we publish a document in march, which must be published in march, that has the calendar of elections-related dates in it, so i was asked when that eleciton will be this year
01:50 PM roycroft: the bylaws say that the board of directors sets the date
01:50 PM roycroft: one of the directors told me that the memership secretary (me) sets the date
01:50 PM roycroft: another board member told me that the elections committee sets the date
01:51 PM roycroft: two other board members asked me to ask the board to vote on a date at the next meeting
01:51 PM roycroft: then i found out that the date is already on the board calendar
01:51 PM roycroft: but nobody told me or staff
01:51 PM roycroft: and nobody knows how it got there
01:52 PM roycroft: and now that they're aware that the bylaw requires them to set the date, they're arguing about whether they need to vote on it
01:52 PM roycroft: it's amazing how well-disguised cans of worms can be
01:53 PM XXCoder: sounds like fun place to work at
01:53 PM roycroft: i ended up going back to my broken website problem, because that was more straightforward and understandable - my boss yells and blames me, he broke it and denies that he did so, and tells me we're going to go out of business if i dont' fix it immediately
01:53 PM roycroft: i've been living that story for 20+ years, so i know exactly how it plays out
01:53 PM roycroft: it's like groundhog day at my office
01:54 PM XXCoder: seriously though its been what 8 months since last order? how do yoiu guys stay in business anyway
01:54 PM roycroft: but since i know exactly how the whack-a-mole game works, i can avoid being clobbered
01:54 PM roycroft: xxcoder: that's only one of his "businesses"
01:54 PM roycroft: i don't mind that it's not done anything in that long
01:54 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
01:54 PM roycroft: i mind that he thinks it's a high priority
01:55 PM roycroft: and i really mind that he's not aware that it actually generates zero revenue
01:55 PM roycroft: i don't even mind so much being pulled off other work for a vanity project, which is how i see this stuff
01:55 PM XXCoder: my hobby biz uring zeroth to 2012 generated way more orders than that one though lol
01:55 PM roycroft: i get paid whether it's vanity or real
01:55 PM roycroft: but if he thinks a vanity project is the revenue stream when it's not, we'll have a real problem eventually
01:55 PM XXCoder: indeed
01:56 PM roycroft: well i'm pretty sure one reason that the site is not getting any orders is because it's fairly broken, and has been for years
01:56 PM roycroft: and i've been telling him about how broken it is for years
01:56 PM roycroft: he doesn't seem to mind that it's unusable
01:57 PM roycroft: but he does mind that the new plugin he wants to play with won't install properly
01:57 PM roycroft: the one he wants to "test" on a production site
01:57 PM roycroft: which i've already cloned to a development site
01:57 PM XXCoder: possible guy thinks its minor changes only, because its been all minor changes over years
01:57 PM silopolis[m]: JT-Shop: u around? Any news on the translation front?
01:57 PM XXCoder: but ultimately it all sums up to big mess of changes
02:05 PM XXCoder: note that doesnt excuse him but yeah
02:14 PM roycroft: yes, but this happens every single time
02:14 PM roycroft: "i just cloned to a development site - you can experiment there"
02:15 PM XXCoder: wont learn it looks like
02:15 PM roycroft: "don't bother - this is not going to break anything ... OOPS! something i did not do just totally broke production! fix it now!"
02:15 PM roycroft: it's the same old song every single time
02:16 PM roycroft: back in the olden days, when i was working at the freenet, our head systems administrator was like that
02:16 PM roycroft: he would want to make changes to the servers in the middle of prime time, when we had hundreds of users logged in
02:17 PM roycroft: every time, the rest of the staff told him to wait until a maintenance window
02:17 PM * XXCoder facepalms
02:17 PM roycroft: every time he just did it anyway
02:17 PM XXCoder: well out for a bit, need to walk the woofmaker
02:17 PM roycroft: then it would break
02:17 PM roycroft: and he would stroke his beard, and say "i THOUGHT it would work"
02:17 PM roycroft: that became a meme with us before memes were a thing
02:48 PM XXCoder: roycroft: lol
02:48 PM XXCoder: proto-meme
04:18 PM unterhaus_: someone posted a rendering of their product online, and then someone asked them for the files
04:19 PM unterhaus_: hahahaha no
04:22 PM roycroft: i'd say "sure. just send me ONE MILLLION DOLLARS first"
04:34 PM * JT-Shop is glad the loader system is back on line finally... took a week to fix it
04:42 PM JT-Shop: silopolis[m], todays good news ^^^^
04:44 PM silopolis[m]: JT-Shop: loader system?
04:47 PM Tom_L: silopolis[m], a job he was working on
04:47 PM JT-Shop: plastic injector press loader system, loaded about 1/4 of the presses at a customers
04:48 PM Tom_L: and yay!
04:48 PM Tom_L: :)
05:17 PM JT-Shop: well Robert Sorby got back to me about the reverse bowl holder bumper... Infinity tools has been quiet after the last email showing the both lock miter tool cuts
05:18 PM Tom_L: odd
05:19 PM Tom_L: maybe you should ring their bell again
05:24 PM JT-Shop: just got an email from Infinity saying I can either get it replaced or refunded
05:24 PM XXCoder: oh hope you get one of those
05:25 PM Tom_L: do they want the old one back?
05:25 PM JT-Shop: we haven't got that far yet
05:26 PM Tom_L: if not, have it reground :)
05:26 PM Tom_L: they'd just need to knock those bumps off the sides
05:27 PM JT-Shop: they is the key word
05:27 PM Tom_L: there's at least a couple shops here capable
05:28 PM Tom_L: might be as much as a new cutter though.. dunno what it was worth
05:29 PM Tom_L: one is almost within walking distance
05:30 PM JT-Shop: https://www.infinitytools.com/45-deg-lock-miter-router-bits
05:31 PM JT-Shop: at least they have stock on the jr so they can replace it
05:35 PM Tom_L: they probably charge under 50 if i had to guess
05:36 PM Tom_L: they made me a chamfer tool from a broken endmill shank in a day
05:36 PM JT-Shop: I'm thinking they want it back
05:36 PM Tom_L: probably, if they're smart they'll just regrind it
05:38 PM Tom_L: from what i remember it shouldn't take much to fix it
05:38 PM Tom_L: unless it was undercut the wrong way
05:38 PM Tom_L: then it may be scrap
05:39 PM XXCoder: if I recall right, wood was too big, meaning cutter wasnt large enough
05:39 PM XXCoder: so likely scrap
05:39 PM JT-Shop: pin is too big for the slot so either one can be fixed
05:40 PM Tom_L: that very well may be the case
05:40 PM JT-Shop: wood was fine
05:49 PM JT-Shop: so Patrick must have tried the last copy lathe and has an issue or two so that's tomorrows task to sort that out
06:01 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/lock-miter-04.jpg
06:05 PM Tom_L: wouldn't take much
06:06 PM Tom_L: but the cutter would have to be bigger to make the slots mesh
06:10 PM JT-Shop: actually I don't think you can fix it because the groove in the cutter cuts the pin and the pin cuts the groove
06:10 PM Tom_L: if they went deeper they might be able to
06:11 PM Tom_L: but the cutter would be smaller than a new one
06:12 PM Tom_L: cutter comp :)
06:12 PM JT-Shop: lol
