12:30 AM solarwind: How easy and cheap is it go and buy a junkyard car like a cheap toyota corolla class for its engine?
12:38 AM solarwind: I'm talking the kind of cars that have been in an accident and are written off as a loss because the damage is too big
12:38 AM solarwind: I know for motorcycles, even a scratch on the frame means a write off
01:18 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:26 AM Deejay: moin
05:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:34 AM Tom_L: morning
06:41 AM JT-Cave: 35°F
08:42 AM silopolis[m]: moin
08:44 AM silopolis[m]: Keeping on my study of Mesa's range, I'm wondering if all step+dir capable boards are also pwm+dir capable ?
09:18 AM JT-Cave: you would have to check the manuals for them
09:25 AM perry_j1987: solarwind there are places like import motors in washington state you can get a crate engine for 700 bucks sometimes less
09:39 AM Tom_L: 58°F now
09:42 AM pcw-home: Yes, Step/Dir outputs can be used for PWM/Dir (or any other 5V output function that's supported by the firmware)
09:50 AM JT-Cave: thanks
10:03 AM silopolis[m]: <pcw-home> "Yes, Step/Dir outputs can be..." <- OK, thanks 👍
10:06 AM silopolis[m]: pcw-home: another one if you please... Is there a step+dir équivalent to the 7i83 ?
10:06 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, was a mess but i got it:http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/B2_proto/B2_proto_handle.JPG
10:08 AM JT-Cave: looking good
10:08 AM JT-Cave: you going to machine them?
10:09 AM Tom_L: no he prints those
10:09 AM Tom_L: that and the part i mated with it for longer ones
10:09 AM Tom_L: this was a 3" model
10:10 AM Tom_L: http://www.ruemohr.org/p1090700.jpg
10:11 AM Tom_L: they want them as light as can be
10:13 AM JT-Cave: ah
10:13 AM * JT-Cave heads out to put the charger on the splitter and see if the ole hoe wants to start
10:18 AM pcw-home: No step dir cards on sserial yet
10:19 AM perry_j1987: hmm i got a spare gecko g320 servo drive step/dir
10:20 AM perry_j1987: could i use that to drive a large servo as a spindle motor for this mini lathe with linuxcnc?
10:20 AM perry_j1987: does linuxcnc allow step/dir output for spindle drive
10:23 AM pcw-home: perry_j1987 you can do it in hal
10:28 AM srk- is now known as srk
10:28 AM rene-dev52 is now known as rene-dev5
10:35 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:39 AM silopolis[m]: <pcw-home> "No step dir cards on sserial yet" <- Any plans for one?
10:39 AM silopolis[m]: Also no sserial encoder input card ala 7i89?
10:44 AM * silopolis[m] dreams of an all modular sserial config... 🤩
10:54 AM pcw-home: Unfortunately main plans this year are dealing with parts availability
10:54 AM Tom_L: and how's that going?
10:54 AM pcw-home: well 7I96S proto being built, we shall see how it works
10:55 AM Tom_L: it'll be a mess trying to keep track of bit files now
10:56 AM pcw-home: but parts availability issue are widespread (Ethernet chips, Optos, ucontrollers even simple MOSFETS and voltage regulators 52 week or > leads times)
10:57 AM Tom_L: yeah, everybody is hurting unless you're in the shipping business
10:57 AM pcw-home: or grey market with 20X markups
11:18 AM perry_j1987: sounds terrible
11:18 AM perry_j1987: never thought i'd live to see shortages of electronic components
11:32 AM pcw-home: Ive seen shortages in certain areas (DRAMS, Ceramic capacitors etc) but never so general and long term
11:43 AM perry_j1987: i could see tantalum capacitors or something with unique materials but it just seems ridiculous whats going on
12:24 PM pcw-home: Tom_L: yeah needs to be some software interlocking so you can't write the wrong bitfile
12:33 PM JT-Cave: will mesaflash still write to the 7i96S?
12:33 PM pcw-home: It will need to be modified
12:33 PM JT-Cave: ok
12:34 PM pcw-home: At the minimum the reload implementation is different
12:36 PM pcw-home: (fallback/reload are completely different on the Efinix chips)
12:36 PM Tom_L: great
12:38 PM * JT-Cave spent the last two hours working on the B&S motor on the splitter... it now starts and runs good so time for a nap
12:42 PM silopolis[m]: <pcw-home> "Unfortunately main plans this..." <- 🤞It will get easier asap
01:48 PM silopolis[m]: Out of curiosity, does mesa+linuxcnc supports CW/CCW double pulse mode for driving motors?
03:58 PM skunkworks: 90https://photos.app.goo.gl/YHF3CWMC1rqG3zud8
03:58 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/YHF3CWMC1rqG3zud8
03:59 PM Tom_L: look oddly similar
04:00 PM Tom_L: so that mounts to the back of Y?
04:00 PM Tom_L: i guess it's called X on a lathe
04:02 PM skunkworks: yes
04:04 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/arwwCyS414pEWKm39
04:05 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/Wn4uqN8k6f63Dwmc7
04:07 PM solarwind_: perry_j1987 nice, I'll have to find a place like that in Toronto
04:08 PM solarwind_: I didn't know you can get crate engines that cheap
04:08 PM solarwind_: Like anything above ~50kW would work
04:08 PM perry_j1987: aye
04:10 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, gettin there..
04:23 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: yes. Going pretty smooth
04:23 PM skunkworks: knock on wood
04:24 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/temp/sign.jpg
04:46 PM solarwind_: human hair has an ultimate tensile strength > 200MPa whaaaaaat
04:46 PM solarwind_ is now known as solarwind
05:19 PM JT-Shop: the long awaited EBC Green rotors and pads for the Corvette will arrive tomorrow
06:50 PM solarwind: random: a lot of trailer beds use 2x6 or 2x8 wood planks for the bed, but the uhaul trailers all use corrugated(?) steel sheet
06:51 PM solarwind: any idea where I can get this kind of metal? I bought a 6'x12' trailer for $200 but it has no bed
06:51 PM solarwind: So need to decide between wood planks and either steel or aluminum sheet
06:52 PM Tom_L: and jets use honeycomb
06:55 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/itm/273203621574?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28
06:56 PM solarwind: Hmmm that might do the trick
06:56 PM solarwind: 2x6 planks from home depot would cost $250 CAD
06:56 PM solarwind: so a bit more for a metal bed would be nice
06:57 PM Tom_L: you can get thicker sheet new
06:57 PM Tom_L: but for a new price
06:57 PM solarwind: Yeah, it's a single axle trailer with a 3,500 lb axle, so it's not going to be used to haul a forklift
06:57 PM solarwind: the deck doesn't have to be that strong
06:59 PM pcw-home: silopolis[m] Step/Direction, CW/CCW, Quadrature, and table driven are all supported
07:03 PM solarwind: Tom_L riddle me this: I bought some huge tables from someone a couple of years ago for my workshop, and they all have a plywood top with sheet metal on top of that
07:03 PM solarwind: I can't figure out what the hell the metal is
07:03 PM solarwind: It's magnetic, but I highly doubt it's stainless
07:03 PM solarwind: It doesn't seem to rust, but I don't think it's galvanized either
07:03 PM solarwind: drilling small holes or scratching the surface doesn't affect its ability to resist rust
07:04 PM Tom_L: stainless
07:04 PM solarwind: But it does form this weird white "scale" on it
07:04 PM solarwind: Like it's what rust would look like, but it's white
07:05 PM solarwind: I got them for such a low price. Like I paid less per table than what the sheet alone would cost if it were mild steel
07:05 PM solarwind: And the tables are _heavy_, at least 250kg each with solid structural steel tube frames
07:05 PM solarwind: I'm not sure what kind of stainless forms this type of coating
07:14 PM Tom_L: it's some exotic alien metal
07:16 PM solarwind: I'll have to take a sample, TIG cast it in a crucible, and then do a salt water corrosion test
07:16 PM solarwind: that should eliminate the possibility of it being galvanized
07:30 PM CloudEvil: Zirconium.
08:48 PM roycroft: that kind of white bloom on ferrous metals is usually a sign of zinc
08:52 PM roycroft: it could also be lead salts
08:56 PM XXCoder: yummy sweet lead salts
08:56 PM XXCoder: lead crystals was the first artifical sweetener. too bad it didnt go well
08:57 PM roycroft: if the tables were used to process batteries, there's a reasonable chance that it's lead (ii) sulphate
08:58 PM infornography: eating lead is how you break free of the matrix, don't let those big shot doctors fool you...
09:00 PM CloudEvil: EAting the right sorts of lead is sweet.
09:01 PM roycroft: i just ordered a big bag of lead
09:01 PM roycroft: but not for snacks
09:23 PM unterhausen: I'm out of practice liftin 5500 pound objects
09:31 PM roycroft: well, our masking requirement expired over a week ago now, and the infection rate in my county has continued to decline
09:31 PM roycroft: next week's data will probably be more telling - there is an incubation period of a few days before folks test positive
09:32 PM roycroft: i expect it might increase by a bit, but hopefully there won't be another big spike
09:44 PM roycroft: i just want to make some weighted mallets, unterhausen
09:44 PM roycroft: but smallish ones - not he-man size
09:45 PM unterhausen: 5500 pound mallet would be a little difficult to use
09:45 PM unterhausen: I'm just trying to get rollers under my mill
10:02 PM roycroft: get a toe jack
