02:50 AM Deejay: moin
04:41 AM Tom_L: morning
05:01 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:53 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:27 AM perry_j1987: curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_12.x -o nodesource_setup.sh
08:27 AM perry_j1987: wopse wrong window lol
08:44 AM JT-Shop: wow the rotors and pads I ordered back in December are on the way
10:13 AM roycroft: some brackets i ordered in early january are finally on their way
10:14 AM roycroft: i still do not have a flat table for the bandsaw i bought in november
10:36 AM unterhaus: I'm moving the mill today. Pretty happy someone invented the lever
10:41 AM unterhaus: OTOH, I wish I still had easy access to a jo-bar
12:14 PM Loetmichel: maaan... its one of those days again. Told the boss yesterday to order one HDMI-extension m/f in 30cm long, and two DP->HDMI cables in 1m long per KVM device he wants to measure. Today delivery came: 30 HDMI cables m/m in 1m long and 15 DP->HDMI adapters in 30cm long. i think i will wear the shirt tomorrow that has the "Sometimes the best thing on this job is that the chair can rotate"...
12:14 PM Loetmichel: :(
12:19 PM roycroft: you can stretch the dp-hdmi cables, but as far as the hdmi extensions, gender conversion therapy has been outlawed in most civilized places, so i'm not sure what you can do about that
12:20 PM Loetmichel: i am honestly a wee bit impressed that he managed to get EVERYTHING wrong.
12:21 PM roycroft: excel has some function that rotates groups of cells around
12:21 PM roycroft: perhaps he accidently engaged that function
12:21 PM Loetmichel: ... again.
12:21 PM Loetmichel: and the frequency is climbing
12:22 PM Loetmichel: the "blunder-frequency" i mean
12:22 PM roycroft: that's happening to me too
12:22 PM roycroft: my boss has always been rather spacey, and not detail-oriented
12:23 PM roycroft: but he's in his mid-70s now, and that is getting even worse
12:23 PM Loetmichel: well, my boss is now 76. and yes, its getting worse by the day.
12:23 PM * Tom_L wonders if the two bosses are related
12:23 PM roycroft: his method of work is to pay half-attention to things, do something wrong, and then spend the rest of his day finding someone to blame
12:24 PM Loetmichel: Tom_L: improbable. my boss is from northeren germany. as far as i know he has no relatives in the US
12:24 PM roycroft: oh well
12:24 PM roycroft: the good news for me is that i used to work in the office and get the abuse every day
12:24 PM roycroft: now i work from home, and only get it a couple times/month on average
12:24 PM Loetmichel: well, i am the production manager there
12:25 PM roycroft: i'm assuming his kid gets to pick up all the abuse that used to be directed at me
12:25 PM Loetmichel: not really a "home office" type of job
12:25 PM roycroft: you work on a production floor
12:25 PM Loetmichel: that said: i nipped that "abuse" thing in the bud in the first week i worked there a decade back
12:25 PM roycroft: which i assume can be noisy
12:26 PM roycroft: in which case, you should probably be wearing noise-cancelling earmuffs
12:26 PM Loetmichel: he started to yell at me for somthing or another... and i yelled back with 10dB++... no abuse my way.
12:26 PM Loetmichel: just correcting his mistakes is starting to get to my nerves.
12:27 PM roycroft: anyway
12:27 PM roycroft: i am finding the cost of parts and materials is going up almost daily
12:27 PM Loetmichel: I am usually the one doing the noise
12:27 PM roycroft: the the point that my router is becoming unaffordable
12:27 PM Loetmichel: its not like its a metal workshop.
12:28 PM roycroft: so i've been doing a lot of redesign work again
12:28 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17211&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:28 PM roycroft: trying to pare it down to the minimum structure that will be reasonably rigid
12:28 PM Loetmichel: http://www.cyrom.org/palbum/main.php?g2_itemId=17304&g2_imageViewsIndex=1
12:28 PM Loetmichel: thats my desk btw
12:28 PM roycroft: the bad news is that it's taking a lot longer than i want to do the design
12:29 PM roycroft: the good news is that i'm getting a lot better with solidworks
12:29 PM roycroft: but that's even an issue now - i finally got the sw upgrade, and it's great
12:29 PM roycroft: but it's also a big memory hog, which i anticipated
12:29 PM roycroft: so it runs really slowly on my new machine
12:29 PM roycroft: fortunately 16GB of ram is out for delivery today
12:30 PM roycroft: i haven't even tried solidcam yet, but it's part of the package, so i finally have some cam software
01:02 PM silopolis[m]: Hey folks ✌️
01:04 PM silopolis[m]: Are there and what are other ways to command servos aside of step+dir, analog and fieldbuses?
01:09 PM roycroft: the eugene symphony just sent me an email with a link to a program for the concert i'm going to
01:09 PM roycroft: nice
01:09 PM roycroft: but the link requires adobe flash
01:10 PM roycroft: are they not aware that adobe flash was forceably removed from all modern windows and mac computers well over a year ago?
01:10 PM roycroft: perhaps two years ago now?
01:10 PM * roycroft forgets exactly when it got expunged
01:11 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: you can still download a standalone flash player. dont think its a good idea though
01:11 PM roycroft: i'm assuming that it was only flash player that was deleted
01:11 PM roycroft: i'm not going to
01:12 PM roycroft: the world moved to html5 a long time ago
01:12 PM roycroft: i'll pick up a printed program when i arrive at the concert hall
01:13 PM roycroft: i'm just surprised that such a multi-media savvy outfit are still developing things with flash
01:15 PM roycroft: their current conductor is really into high-tech multimedia presentations
01:16 PM roycroft: most concerts feature at least one piece with visual backgrounds - he usually gets several local artists involved in that
01:17 PM roycroft: and they're going to play the soundtrack to a harry potter film next month with the film projected in the background
01:18 PM roycroft: as well, it's not like they have no money for software tools
01:18 PM roycroft: throughout the pandemic they staged virtual concerts for a fee, and they also got two shuttered venue grants
01:29 PM Loetmichel: Hmm. I am just reading a novel in english. A bit ashamed for being a german when i read "...he looked at me with a mix of empathy and schadenfreude..." ... to know that there isnt even an english word for that concept is a bit embarrasing. :(
01:36 PM roycroft: why?
01:36 PM roycroft: schadenfreude is a wonderful loan word
01:36 PM roycroft: it enriches our vocabulary
01:37 PM Loetmichel: my train of though was that if the language had to steal that word from another than the culture that that word is stolen from has the concept behind it a lot more prevalent in it than the one that has stolen the word.
01:38 PM roycroft: what's really sad is that we have no word for "gemütlichkeit", and we haven't widely adopted it as loan word
01:39 PM Loetmichel: really?
01:39 PM roycroft: probably because americans can neither pronounce nor spell it
01:40 PM Loetmichel: have to listen to the balu and mogli song again.
01:40 PM roycroft: possibly because we don't feel that way very much any more
01:40 PM roycroft: we're a very angsty, angry society these days
01:41 PM roycroft: quite possibly because we also don't drink glühwein in this country
01:41 PM Loetmichel: ah, i see
01:42 PM Loetmichel: it says "The bare neccessities" in english instead of "Probiers mal mit Ruhe und Gemütlichkeit" in german
01:43 PM roycroft: we have 'copacetic', but that's most often used in a rather snarky manner
01:43 PM roycroft: and that's probably as close as we come to gemütlichkeit
01:43 PM Loetmichel: i would have said "to hang out/laze around" as gemütlichkeit, but thats not really hitting the core either
01:44 PM roycroft: and even when it's not used snarkily, it's not very close
01:44 PM Loetmichel: "relaxing" maybe?
01:44 PM roycroft: "chillin' with friends" maybe
01:45 PM roycroft: but there's the rub
01:45 PM roycroft: we just don't have a good word or short phrase equivalent
01:46 PM Loetmichel: basically "gemütlichkeit" is a relaxing, calming athmosphere
01:47 PM Loetmichel: but yeah, as some wise british(?) author once said: "translations are either beautiful or true, never both"
01:47 PM roycroft: we are not relaxed nor calm as a people
01:47 PM roycroft: so perhaps there's no need for that word here
01:49 PM Loetmichel: well, yeah. maybe thats why i was nicknamed "balu" often by my american friends.
01:53 PM Loetmichel: roycroft: i just made the experience that things dont go faster or better if i get agitated about them or angry. so why make a fuss?
02:00 PM roycroft: that's how i see things these days
02:00 PM roycroft: not that i don't ever get agitated
02:00 PM roycroft: but for the most part, getting angry solves nothing
02:01 PM roycroft: life is going to be what it is
02:01 PM Loetmichel: indeed

06:53 PM XXCoder: great casting video
07:25 PM roycroft: i saw a scary video recently
07:25 PM roycroft: the guy was making a leather and wood case
07:25 PM roycroft: he had a cnc router, and was using it as an overhead router, but he was hand-holding the part
07:25 PM roycroft: let me see if i can find it
07:27 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiRqkojKvYo
07:28 PM roycroft: at about 7:50, and then again at about 9:19
07:28 PM roycroft: he did have a guide for the part, but that's still beyond sketchy
07:29 PM XXCoder: ehh not great but not worse
07:29 PM roycroft: especially the second time, when his fingers were right next to the cutter
07:29 PM roycroft: i would not do that
07:29 PM roycroft: i like my fingers
07:29 PM roycroft: i like them a lot
07:29 PM XXCoder: trust me
07:29 PM XXCoder: I like my fingers more than you do
07:32 PM roycroft: i'm sure you like your fingers more than i do
07:32 PM roycroft: but i'm just as sure that i like my fingers more than you do
07:32 PM XXCoder: LOL
07:32 PM roycroft: so we probably won't be swapping fingers any time soon
07:32 PM XXCoder: indeed but then I have more uses for mine. including commucation :P
07:33 PM roycroft: you're not the only one who uses fingers for that
07:33 PM roycroft: ukrainian soldier communicates with russian tank with finger
07:33 PM XXCoder: lol
07:34 PM roycroft: and the best news of the week is that is an official postage stamp now

07:57 PM Tom_L: center cut out on a lathe or mill?
07:57 PM skunkworks: boring? mill
07:58 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zqBK9UoThTjZ4LWk7
08:00 PM Tom_L: progress
08:00 PM Tom_L: no deburring needed, just put a china stamp on it
08:01 PM XXCoder: indeed lol

08:49 PM roycroft: tough world
08:51 PM * roycroft is going to a concert tonight, and will be able to escape the troubles of the world for a few hours
