05:59 AM JT-Cave: morning
08:14 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:59 AM silopolis[m]: o/
09:06 AM silopolis[m]: Hey guys,
09:06 AM silopolis[m]: Power supply question... Is it better to have one PSU per DC voltage needed, or a single one with converters is just as good?
09:11 AM perry_j1987: on one of my machines i have a toroid psu and then i feed the servo's direct from that and then also tap off with dc-dc converters for 24/12/5v
09:12 AM perry_j1987: the other machine has a switching psu for steppers and then it uses an onboard regulator to step down to 12 and 5 for other electronics
09:14 AM silopolis[m]: perry_j1987: thanks
09:41 AM roycroft: i like having separate power supplies - it helps isolate points of failure, and it also makes sparing more simple
09:41 AM roycroft: i.e. i can keep a spare of each voltage and use it for any machine where i need it
09:42 AM roycroft: but if space in the control panel is an issue, a multi-tap power supply can be a good option
09:42 AM roycroft: i don't know that there is an inherent advantage of one approach vs. the other
11:50 AM Tom_L: most PCs seem to think one supply is the way to go
11:51 AM Tom_L: i don't think it makes that much difference
11:52 AM Tom_L: availability might play a part
11:57 AM roguish[m]: On my new little mill, I have a big toroid dc supply for the motor drives, and small 5 and 24v dc supplies for the controls
11:58 AM unterhaus: I got some dc-dc converters to power my rpi4 from the high voltage power, makes things less messy
12:00 PM unterhaus: plus, on my lathe I couldn't get enough wires up to the control, so it seemed better to send 24v than 5v. Although a boost converter might have worked
12:09 PM Tom_L: i centertap my 48v for 24v so it falls within range of the smps supplies and use smps for the rest
12:19 PM roycroft: there are many ways to power a machine, none of which is "the right way"
12:19 PM roycroft: most of which are right ways
12:21 PM roycroft: i don't know that there is a definitive answer to the fewer components vs single points of failure approaches
12:21 PM roycroft: especially if one only has one machine using those components
12:23 PM roycroft: a big part of my argument for discrete parts is that i have multiple machines that use many of those parts, and it makes sparing easier and more economical if i use single-purpose parts vs. multifunction parts, but that does not apply to an isolated machine
12:50 PM unterhaus: I suppose keeping spares for some things might be a good idea nowadays
12:52 PM roycroft: given the supply chain issues we experience now the argument for stocking spares is quite compelling
01:06 PM miss0r: gah. Capt. brain here... I just wrapping up some stupid selfinflicted unpayed work.
01:07 PM miss0r: Earlier today I went to install a big grinder. Layed out the holes to be drilled in the newly hardened foundation made for it. Drilled said holes. Went to buy some 20mm "all thread", cut it to length, glued them in place ect ect.
01:08 PM miss0r: after they had hardened and got straightened, I went to throw on the adjusting feet. (Think three layers of cast iron, with a wedge in the middle that can be pushed/pulled with a thread to adjust height)
01:08 PM roycroft: etc , but continue :)
01:08 PM miss0r: did they fit?!
01:09 PM miss0r: oh noes... I haden't payed attention..
01:09 PM miss0r: They were for 16mm threaded rod....
01:09 PM miss0r: So, Now I am just wrapping up the final assembly of the last of the 18 feet I had to "adjust" :)
01:09 PM roycroft: grind down the all-thread and run a die over it :)
01:10 PM miss0r: hehehe. They stick out 185mm from the floor. and there are 18 of them. That would end up a bloody mess
01:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r: howdy
01:11 PM miss0r: This is alot faster. I used the CNC mill to enlarge the slot in the middle wedge, while I used the drillpress to enlarge the two outer holes. It only took 3 hours
01:11 PM roycroft: if boring out the adusters does not compromise their strength, using the larger all thread makes for a stronger mount in the end
01:11 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight[m]: Hello :)
01:11 PM roycroft: so consider not that you created a lot of extra work for yourself, but that you made a better mount
01:12 PM miss0r: roycroft: Yeah. they are not weakened the least. but its not like the 20mm is needed, not even the 16mm ones :) That machine weighs around 64metric tons
01:12 PM * roycroft is good at rationalizing
01:12 PM miss0r: :)
01:12 PM XXCoder: lol
01:12 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight[m]: our schedules do not allow for us to meet up often, it would seem :)
01:13 PM miss0r: roycroft: Its not the extra work that pisses me off. Its the fact that I am already two days behind schedule with just about everything. And this added another one to the delay
01:14 PM miss0r: I was supposed to go to celle, Germany this friday to fix some rather antiquated gear hobs, that I am, for some reason, considered a leading expert on in the north... I've had to reschedule that to Wensday.
01:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r: I'm not on here much anyway
01:15 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight[m]: How's your SMPS-transformer-fu ?
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the matrix client stays logged in when I'm gone
01:16 PM miss0r: roycroft: And if all that is not bad enoug. the feet are cast iron. Now I've got this whole mess to deal with :D
01:17 PM miss0r: Atleast there were no lathe work. I ABSOLUTLY HATE cleaning cast iron grit off the lathe
01:21 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight[m]: I'm having some issues with this SMPS charger I'm building. But at this point I have something that works, but I think it should be able to output a higher current. Are you familiar with flyback transformers, permiability, saturation current & winding ratios ect. ?
01:22 PM roycroft: cast iron is so much fun
01:22 PM roycroft: it machines beautifully, but the mess!
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: miss0r: the fun of analog
01:22 PM miss0r: brb shortly
01:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: do you have specs on the transformers or are you just working with what you have?
01:28 PM miss0r: CaptHindsight[m]: Should we take this to a PM session? Then i can post some links ect.
04:08 PM roycroft: we're forecast to hit 20 degrees next week
04:08 PM roycroft: first time this year
04:09 PM roycroft: although it has gotten that warm on a few days so far - but it's never been forecast that high
04:10 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 20 here right now
04:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: been 16-18 since Sunday
04:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: people driving like 3rd graders running to the bathroom, police speed traps are busy
05:42 PM roycroft: i just got chewed out by my boss for being non-responsive
05:42 PM roycroft: we're having a network issue that is out my control - it's upstream of us
05:42 PM roycroft: but our mail server is isolated from the internet because of it
05:42 PM roycroft: my boss knows this and i know it
05:42 PM roycroft: and his kid knows it
05:43 PM roycroft: but he just chewed me out because his kid has sent me three emails about the outage and i have not responded
05:43 PM XXCoder: sounds like horrible boss
05:43 PM roycroft: i pointed out that the outage involves the mail server, and as such, emailing me about it is not going to work
05:43 PM roycroft: and he told me there's no excuse for not responding to his kid
05:44 PM roycroft: am i somehow immune from outages?
05:44 PM roycroft: if that's the case, that would be wonderful
05:44 PM roycroft: i could market my immunity
05:44 PM roycroft: and make ONE MILLION DOLLARS on the internet instantly
05:46 PM XXCoder: geez
06:06 PM JT-Shop: your thinking small change...
06:14 PM roycroft: i'm not greedy
06:15 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: he means million dollars a day of course
06:41 PM JT-Shop: I would ask him how am I supposed to reply to an email I didn't get?
06:47 PM roycroft: that was the "excuse"
07:38 PM Brett[m]: I
07:38 PM Brett[m]: I've emailed you my resignation 2 weeks ago
07:38 PM Brett[m]: didn't you get it?
10:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcYSdzUs3cQ
10:25 PM XXCoder: interesting, though I hope that video dont expose them enough to be discoverable
10:32 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: France24 does a pretty good job of vetting their news and videos
10:48 PM roycroft: the russians have shown no signs of credible ground intelligence
10:48 PM XXCoder: the generals is calling using cellphones
10:48 PM XXCoder: using ukraine networks
10:48 PM roycroft: i'm not sure there's a great risk of being of being discoverable
10:49 PM XXCoder: unexcrypted, insecure calls
10:49 PM roycroft: besides, the russians are targeting children and hospitals, not military targets
10:50 PM XXCoder: yeah saw that bonbing of building with words "children" by it :(
10:51 PM XXCoder: possibky over thousand death
10:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: haven't I been warning you about the Russians for years?
10:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "you can never trust the Russians"
10:52 PM roycroft: i don't recall your doing so, but i won't refute that you have
10:58 PM roycroft: fwiw, thought, i have always agreed on that point, regarding the russian government, at least
11:27 PM srk- is now known as srk
