03:20 AM silopolis[m]: Hi
03:21 AM silopolis[m]: CaptHindsight: thanks for links! ππ
03:24 AM silopolis[m]: Time for active watching π
05:04 AM silopolis[m]: As I tend to personally lean toward 50/26 HD Mesa boards, I'm wondering why DB ones seem generally prefered?
05:04 AM silopolis[m]: What's the real deal behind this choice?
05:10 AM JT-Cave: morning]
05:19 AM JT-Cave: the 5i25/6i25 DB25 cards have a nice cable to the daughter card
05:19 AM JT-Cave: but now a days the 7i92/H/M go in the same cabinet as the daughter cards
05:20 AM JT-Cave: and so does the 7i80HD or 7i80DB
05:22 AM Tom_L: morning
05:22 AM JT-Cave: 7i80DB $149 7i92 $89
05:22 AM unterhaus_: ethernet cards are a lot cleaner, no longer drowning in hefty cables
05:22 AM JT-Cave: yup
05:23 AM JT-Cave: looks like we might have gotten more snow last night
05:23 AM unterhaus_: my first mesa system had 50 pin cables everywhere, it's a pain
05:23 AM silopolis[m]: unterhaus_: Agreed, was talking about mother to daughter cards links actually
05:24 AM JT-Cave: my chnc has a 5i20 7i33TA and 7i37TA
05:24 AM JT-Cave: 22Β°F atm
05:24 AM silopolis[m]: JT-Cave: Snow ? Oh my ! Everything just started blossoming this week here
05:24 AM JT-Cave: not seeing the 16Β°F forcasted
05:25 AM Tom_L: 21 here
05:36 AM silopolis[m]: <unterhaus_> "my first mesa system had 50..." <- I'm fearing a routing nightmare indeed ! That's why my first choice would be a 7i94
05:37 AM unterhaus_: I like the idea of an all smart serial system from a wiring point of view
05:37 AM silopolis[m]: But have to check if I can have all subsystems potentialy covered for my lab rig
05:39 AM silopolis[m]: This is the first draft analysis for the lab rig https://i.imgur.com/bnhwdHz.png
05:44 AM silopolis[m]: Would love to have daughter cards per system. I'm favoring modularity over cost.
06:25 AM andypugh: XXCoder: The links alrady exist. Thatβs just a 6 year backlog of new members to a club founded in 1926.

08:10 AM JT-Cave: 19Β°F now
08:10 AM JT-Cave: time to clean cat crap and start some fires
10:05 AM roguish[m]: up to 72 yesterday, probably up to 70 today......low overnight about 34
11:08 AM CaptHindsight[m]: silopolis: there are lots of LCNC forum posts on how to properly design the E-stop https://forum.linuxcnc.org/ search for e-stop
11:22 AM silopolis[m]: CaptHindsight: perfect, will do π thanks π
11:23 AM Tom_L: thru the pin header
11:24 AM Tom_L: run the slower io thru one of the sserial connections
11:26 AM Tom_L: you have 17 io on it to use it looks like
11:30 AM silopolis[m]: Tom_L: so I need a 25 pin to db adapter and a 25db daughter card to drive motors?
11:32 AM Tom_L: probably
11:32 AM XXCoder: andypugh: ahh ok
11:32 AM Tom_L: kindof an unusual card to use
11:34 AM silopolis[m]: I'm wondering if going the other way around with a 7i80DB+7i74 wouldn't offer more possibilities π€
11:35 AM silopolis[m]: Would, sorry
11:35 AM Tom_L: what would you need the 7i74 for if you did that?
11:35 AM Tom_L: the 80 has plenty of io
11:35 AM Tom_L: you might need a couple daughter cards
11:41 AM JT-Cave: I's use a 7i78 or 7i76 for a stepper daughter card
03:18 PM drdoc: buenos dias, y'all
04:16 PM perry_j1987: how small of drill bits have you guys seen with through coolant?
04:17 PM drdoc: 1.5mm, I think
04:17 PM perry_j1987: holy crap ya 1.32 im seeing here
04:17 PM perry_j1987: i wouldnt have imagined
04:17 PM drdoc: last job used some close to that in Ti
04:18 PM drdoc: perry_j1987: it's *really* impressive tech
04:18 PM perry_j1987: https://www.harveytool.com/products/tool-details-cxz0787-c3 dont break one
04:19 PM perry_j1987: ouch
04:19 PM drdoc: and in nasty material like titanium & soft aluminum, very much worth the investment
04:19 PM XXCoder: cheap lol
04:19 PM drdoc: XXCoder: long run, they are
04:19 PM drdoc: perry_j1987: try Dixie
04:19 PM perry_j1987: best be sure on your feeds and speeds lol
04:19 PM drdoc: yessir
04:20 PM StephanBeer[m] is now known as Stephan[m]
04:20 PM drdoc: and don't forget they're pekers
04:20 PM drdoc: peckers
04:21 PM drdoc: I don't know that I'd run them in most jobs, but where you need them, it's a game changer
04:23 PM perry_j1987: i think im going to pick up some sheet metal and make a full enclosure around this mini lathe so i can fling some coolant around
04:26 PM drdoc: how mini is it?
04:30 PM perry_j1987: "the" mini lathe 7x10
04:31 PM perry_j1987: heavily modified
04:31 PM perry_j1987: has 6 station gang tooling on it
04:31 PM perry_j1987: 1204 ballscrews on both axis
04:32 PM drdoc: I'm sweet
04:32 PM drdoc: lol
04:32 PM drdoc: "Sweet."
04:33 PM perry_j1987: my other machine i run is prob over 150k lol
04:33 PM drdoc: I'm thinking about building a micro from scratch - I can't find anything like I want
04:33 PM perry_j1987: i like to be at both ends of the specturm lol
04:34 PM perry_j1987: ya i know what you mean
04:34 PM drdoc: something around 2x5
04:34 PM perry_j1987: i'd like something like a micro swiss/gang lathe
04:34 PM drdoc: oh man
04:34 PM drdoc: but the enclosure for that will probably be a cut-down PC case
04:35 PM perry_j1987: it'd be nice to make a traveling steady that bolts onto this saddle that has a bushing in a bearing
04:35 PM drdoc: There's not one out there already?
04:38 PM drdoc: Also, seriously, try Dixie Tool Works for drills
04:38 PM drdoc: Call & schmooze a little, ask for a break
04:38 PM drdoc: I'm sure you know the, uh... drill
06:40 PM roycroft: dave stanton is demoing how to sharpen trim knife blades today
06:40 PM * roycroft wonders why anyone would ever bother, unless they were out of spares
06:51 PM drdoc: roycroft: outside of disposable razors and scalpels, I've never found a disposable blade that was all that sharp
06:52 PM drdoc: and good scalpel blades ain't cheap
06:53 PM roycroft: that's the thing
06:54 PM roycroft: they are both cheap, and don't start out very sharp
06:54 PM roycroft: trim knife blades
06:59 PM roycroft: the scalpel blades i buy are fairly inexpensive, and reasonably sharp
07:10 PM drdoc: roycroft: yeah, but the less expensive ones I've used go dull pretty fast
07:11 PM drdoc: I have an $8 440C "craft" knife with a sheepsfoot blade and Resoprene handle, maybe 1.25" blade
07:12 PM drdoc: by some freak of production it got a good heat treat, and will take & keep a razor edge.
07:12 PM drdoc: I treasure that thing like a diamond
07:12 PM perry_j1987: havnt heard of dixie tool works drdoc
07:13 PM drdoc: perry_j1987: sorry, it's Dixie Tool Crib
07:13 PM perry_j1987: oh well thats different...
07:13 PM perry_j1987: havnt heard of that either haha
07:14 PM drdoc: it's one of those mental fubars I'll never get rid of
07:14 PM drdoc: https://www.dixie-tool.com/
07:15 PM drdoc: It's "Dixie Tool Works" forever as far as the wetware is concerned
07:28 PM drdoc: roycroft: I'm kind of a blade snob. My old man was a Gerber distributor when Gerber weren't junk, and I tend to judge blades against a 1972 Gerber Folding Hunter II
07:28 PM drdoc: IOW "If you ever let it get dull, good luck getting it sharp again."
07:45 PM roycroft: it's not hard to sharpen blades, even extremely abused ones
07:46 PM roycroft: but it's a lot easier to just keep them sharp
08:11 PM drdoc: roycroft: those old Gerbers ran around an honest 62R,
08:11 PM roycroft: i has diamonds
08:11 PM roycroft: but as i said, it's a lot easier to keep a blade sharp than to sharpen it
08:11 PM drdoc: not hard, but wicked tedious to put a nice edge back on
08:11 PM drdoc: yes, yes it is
08:12 PM drdoc: OK
08:12 PM drdoc: at the risk of getting booted, I have a purely commercial announcement
08:13 PM drdoc: I have one 48VDC/32A Meanwell left to sell, a bunch of 20A/480V DIN-mount breakers, and some TFX PC power supplies listed on Ebay
08:14 PM drdoc: plus some Dwyer/Love 16A PID units I'll get listed tonight
08:14 PM drdoc: https://www.ebay.com/sch/dr.doc/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=
08:15 PM drdoc: If there's something you want poke me here, don't mess with Ebay, and I'll give you that 13%
08:17 PM drdoc: the temp controllers are 16A2120-992-9502 and 16A3120-992-9502
08:19 PM roycroft: what is the actual maximum output voltage of that power supply?
08:19 PM roycroft: does it go up to 56v?
08:37 PM drdoc: mmmm
08:38 PM drdoc: I think 53
08:38 PM drdoc: hold on
08:39 PM drdoc: survey sez 56 max
08:39 PM drdoc: https://www.meanwell-web.com/content/files/pdfs/productPdfs/MW/RSP-1500/RSP-1500-spec.pdf
08:40 PM drdoc: and I know it'll go a lot *lower* than the rated minimum - they ran them at 40V a lot
08:40 PM drdoc: it's a dang nice unit
08:41 PM drdoc: I don't know if I'd want to load it hard at rated max, even a Meanwell
08:42 PM drdoc: roycroft: If I sell it off ebay I'll throw in the mains harness
08:43 PM drdoc: PC-style 110V socket, lighted rocker switch, crimped eyelets
09:08 PM roycroft: i'd be running it on 240v
09:08 PM roycroft: and i have several smaller ones already
09:09 PM roycroft: but i'm thinking i should use two of the smaller ones for my router, so one bigger one might be nice
09:09 PM roycroft: i don't think i'd run it at more than about 15
09:09 PM roycroft: a
09:10 PM drdoc: that oughta work
09:10 PM roycroft: yrd
09:10 PM roycroft: yes, rather
09:10 PM roycroft: at your asking price, less 13%, i'm not terribly interested
09:10 PM roycroft: but if it doesn't sell for a while, and you're willing to go with a lower offer, talk to me
09:10 PM drdoc: What would make you interested?
09:11 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, $75 would make me interested today
09:11 PM drdoc: oh, nah
09:11 PM roycroft: yeah
09:11 PM roycroft: but i don't need it for a couple months
09:11 PM drdoc: I've sold 2 at $130
09:11 PM roycroft: and i might go higher then
09:11 PM roycroft: so if it doesn't sell in a couple months talk to me
09:11 PM roycroft: i'm not trying to lowball you
09:11 PM drdoc: I know
09:11 PM roycroft: but as i said, i have some already
09:12 PM roycroft: 12a
09:12 PM drdoc: it's worth what it's worth to you
09:12 PM roycroft: i have 3 or 4 12a power supplies
09:12 PM roycroft: and my motors are rated to 80v
09:13 PM roycroft: i might run across a 72v ps by the time i need to do that part of the build
09:14 PM drdoc: my cut post-fees on the other 2 was $112
09:14 PM _unreal_: so pissed off. started the major phase of the rebuild of my bigger cnc
09:14 PM drdoc: ruh roh
09:15 PM _unreal_: and discoveredd the stock cut on the 2040 extrusion is anything but square
09:15 PM roycroft: i'm not ready for this story yet
09:15 PM roycroft: i'm still eating dinner
09:15 PM _unreal_: then broke one of the END screws as well for mounting the extrusion :/
09:15 PM drdoc: lol
09:15 PM roycroft: and i can't really make some popcorn while in the middle of dinner
09:15 PM drdoc: laughing at roycroft, not you
09:17 PM drdoc: _unreal_: I've started designing anything extrusion-based to overlap, no butt joints
09:17 PM drdoc: it's ugly, but it saves me a lot of hair tearing
09:18 PM drdoc: If it really has to be square I buy from Zyltech
09:18 PM drdoc: ...and expect to return some of it
09:18 PM drdoc: ...twice
09:18 PM roycroft: or cut it yourself
09:19 PM roycroft: and then machine the end square
09:19 PM drdoc: or cut it myself
09:19 PM drdoc: I had my chop saw dialed in Pretty Dang Close
09:19 PM drdoc: then I moved
09:21 PM drdoc: but man, a rough carborundum blade in alunium(tm) is not pretty
09:24 PM roycroft: my band saw cuts almost dead square
09:24 PM roycroft: and fairly smoothly
09:24 PM XXCoder: no mill to cut it sqare?
09:25 PM roycroft: when i need something that's really square i usually cut about 0.020" long on the band saw, then remove 0.010" from each end on the mill
09:33 PM roycroft: awesome
09:33 PM roycroft: ukraine has just issued a new postage stamp
09:34 PM roycroft: it depicts a ukrainian soldier flipping the bird to a russian warship
