12:31 PM perry_j1987: hows it going
12:36 PM roycroft: my crimp tool is finally arriving today, so i'll hopefully be able to get my 3d printer mods completed soon
02:02 PM perry_j1987: new belt just arrived
02:05 PM XXCoder: roy nice
02:06 PM roycroft: hopefully
02:06 PM roycroft: if the crimp tool works
02:53 PM roycroft: i have a crimper that allegedly works with the jst connector pins i have, but it does not even come close
02:53 PM roycroft: this one will hopefully be better
02:53 PM roycroft: the one i already have is primarily for d-shell connector pins
02:53 PM Tom_L: solder works on most terminals :)
02:54 PM Tom_L: as a last resort
02:54 PM roycroft: if this crimper does not work, solder is my next option
02:54 PM roycroft: i prefer crimped connections to soldered once, when the crimps can be made properly
02:54 PM roycroft: ones, not once
02:55 PM Tom_L: well of course
04:24 PM perry_j1987: belt almost installed
04:24 PM perry_j1987: gotta figure out alignment now
04:24 PM XXCoder: almost installed is like almost pregrant. ;)
04:24 PM perry_j1987: lol
04:26 PM Tom_L: not quite as stressful
04:28 PM perry_j1987: took a spill on some ice riding moped over to my shop today
04:28 PM perry_j1987: bit sore
04:29 PM perry_j1987: making it harder to lean over this machine ugh
04:50 PM _unreal_: FINALLY 3 weeks later my new license showed up in the mail.o
04:51 PM _unreal_: perry_j1987, its only like 77F outside here
04:51 PM _unreal_: I may go out back and pick/open a coconut
04:51 PM perry_j1987: lol
04:52 PM _unreal_: I dont miss the slips and brusses from winter ether
04:53 PM _unreal_: infact, I use to get wicked dry skin rashes every winter.. NEVER had it again being in florida
04:55 PM t4nk_freenode: winter ether! it's intoxicating
04:55 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
05:00 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:00 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:05 PM t4nk_freenode: _unreal_, I think I've had the worst of the bearing-switcheroo process behind me now
05:05 PM t4nk_freenode: need to put the machine back together now
05:06 PM t4nk_freenode: and the fortifying rail probably won't fit anymore
05:06 PM t4nk_freenode: oh... and I cut the limit switch wires a bit short
05:29 PM perry_j1987: man this belt alignment is anoying
05:33 PM t4nk_freenode: you know what's _really_ 'anoying'?? .... the rattling around of threaded rods inside tubing... if I don't do something about it before I close the machine up :)
05:35 PM t4nk_freenode: spent days with pointed ears before I realised what it was
05:39 PM _unreal_: switcheroo?
05:40 PM _unreal_: there just got a nice new trailer jack on my utility trailer now
05:53 PM _unreal_: palm to face, so my elderly neighbor just called me asking me how long she should cook a potato for in the mic.... Her Late husband did all of the cooking ALLLL of the cooking.
05:54 PM _unreal_: I told her stab it a few times with a fork and hit the potato button.
05:54 PM _unreal_: she thought i was joking. then looked at the panel. "well what do ya know"
05:54 PM _unreal_: a potato button
05:58 PM perry_j1987: there we go belt tracking
05:59 PM t4nk_freenode: so according to my mic..rophone, I should cook this dwarf potatoe at full beans for 6 minutes
05:59 PM t4nk_freenode: is that correct?
06:02 PM t4nk_freenode: anyhow, now I'm tempted to cook one
06:21 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, be sure to tell her not to wrap it in foil
06:21 PM Tom_L: ;)
06:26 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
06:59 PM perry_j1987: well that didnt last very long heh
07:00 PM perry_j1987: 3d printed timing pulley
07:00 PM perry_j1987: i'll have to print up another one or two to get me through the job of boring out the new metal pulleys once they arrive lol
07:08 PM _unreal_: perry_j1987, make the "supporting walls thick
07:08 PM _unreal_: on our print
07:08 PM _unreal_: your
07:08 PM _unreal_: perry_j1987, like 6-8 layers thick and I suggest "fine" print quality
07:09 PM _unreal_: should hold up better
07:09 PM _unreal_: what tip are you using on your printer
07:13 PM roycroft: this new computer is so nice
07:14 PM roycroft: not only does it run sw a lot faster than in a vm on my imac, i've discovered that it can be useful to have an older version of a project open on the imac while i'm making revisions on the cad machine
07:15 PM Tom_L: did you get a sw license with it?
07:16 PM perry_j1987: it melted all of the teeth right off
07:16 PM perry_j1987: friction
07:17 PM perry_j1987: PETG
07:17 PM CloudEvil: perry_j1987: Or add flood coolant for your gears
07:19 PM perry_j1987: haha
07:21 PM roycroft: tom_l: i'm using my old license for now
07:22 PM roycroft: i'm still working on buying that other license
07:23 PM Tom_L: new hardware is always fun for a while
07:23 PM roycroft: technically i'm not supposed to be running on two machines at once, but i'm only doing work on one
07:23 PM roycroft: actually, i could easily be in compliance
07:24 PM roycroft: there is a sw viewer which is all i need on my imac now
07:24 PM Tom_L: depending which side of the fence you're looking from
07:25 PM roycroft: if i ever upgrade the graphics card in the new machine i can add a second display, and then i could easily so the viewing of the old files and the editing of the new ones on the same machine simultaneously
07:25 PM roycroft: which would have the added advantage of not making turn around 180 degrees every time i want to look at the other screen
07:25 PM Tom_L: yeah, i still don't like doing that
07:26 PM Tom_L: i keep 2 side by side on different pcs
07:26 PM roycroft: that was the really nice thing about running it in a vm on my imac
07:26 PM roycroft: the imac's primary display is a 27" 5k screen
07:26 PM roycroft: and it's flanked by a 27" 4k display on each side of it
07:27 PM roycroft: heaps of high resolution screen real estate to work with
07:27 PM roycroft: but that's also a major reason that sw ran so slow on it
07:27 PM Tom_L: my eyes aren't that good to see beyond 4k
07:28 PM roycroft: i can tell the difference between 4k and 5k on the same size display, but it's a somewhat subtle difference
07:28 PM roycroft: there's no way i'm getting a 5k display for the cad machine - i can get a decent 4k display for <$300, but a 5k is going to cost close to $1k
07:29 PM roycroft: i just have a 1920x1080 display on the cad machine at the moment
07:29 PM roycroft: and it does ok, but it's rather restrictive
07:30 PM roycroft: i have to zoom in a lot more than i'd like to to see details
07:30 PM roycroft: it's also only 24"
07:33 PM Tom_L: i find rubbernecking on a large display annoying
07:33 PM Tom_L: i dunno what mine are.. 20something 1080
07:33 PM Tom_L: x3
07:34 PM Tom_L: and using a thumb ball i want it to move from one edge to the other without lifting
07:35 PM Tom_L: i never did care for those 'space' mice thingies
07:36 PM roycroft: i have one that i love using for sw
07:36 PM roycroft: but in addition to a standard two button + wheel mouse
07:36 PM Tom_L: i was convinced i needed one until i tried them at the votech
07:36 PM roycroft: not instead of it
07:36 PM roycroft: i don't use it much when i'm drawing parts
07:36 PM roycroft: but when i'm doing assemblies, it makes it so much easier to do mates
07:37 PM Tom_L: the ball mouse is set so i can pan zoom rotate without lifting in catia which makes it quick
07:38 PM Tom_L: trying to mod my post a little and it's just not wanting to cooperate
07:43 PM unterhausen: it took me a long time to get used to 2 30" displays, but not very long to get used to a 42" display
07:57 PM roycroft: my array of displays works nicely for me
07:57 PM roycroft: a 42" would be way too big, unless it were curved
07:57 PM roycroft: in which case it might work very well
07:59 PM unterhausen: it gets pretty narrow when you want two windows side by side.
07:59 PM unterhausen: and there still isn't a tall enough display for my tastes
07:59 PM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com//dp/B07PJQKLTW
07:59 PM roycroft: something like that would be nice
07:59 PM XXCoder: does it act as 3 montors internally?
07:59 PM XXCoder: or 3 sectioned single?
08:00 PM unterhausen: not enough lines, my monitor has 2160 lines and I would be happy with more
08:00 PM Tom_L: turn it sideways
08:01 PM roycroft: i'm not sure how it's addressed, xxcoder
08:01 PM unterhausen: might work sideways, but I would have to do neck stretches
08:01 PM roycroft: the gpu in my new cad machine doesn't support 4k anyway
08:02 PM roycroft: but i knew when i bought the machine that i might need a gpu for it
08:02 PM roycroft: the main reason i have three displays on my imac is so i can have my network monitoring utilities open on two of them while i do work on the third
08:03 PM roycroft: i'm pretty happy with the current setup
08:05 PM roycroft: for cad work, dual displays is nice because the primary display can be the drawing window, and all the toolbars etc. can be shoved over onto the second display
08:05 PM unterhausen: yeah, if you have multiple apps at the same time, multi monitors are nice
08:05 PM unterhausen: dual 30" was nice because solidworks + matlab
08:05 PM roycroft: even with my three displays on my imac, i use spaces extensively
08:06 PM roycroft: on space 1 the primary display is a bunch of xterms, space 2 is email/contacts/calendar, space 3 is safari, space 4 firefox, space 5 libreoffice and other productivity apps, etc.
08:07 PM roycroft: and the network monitoring stuff i assign to the side screens in all spaces, so no matter what space i'm in i'll see that stuff
09:02 PM roycroft: well, the crimper worked brilliantly on the one test i conducted
09:02 PM roycroft: unfortunately, i have to leave in a few minutes, and i won't have time to work on that project again before monday or so
09:02 PM roycroft: but i'm encouraged that the crimper works well
