12:36 AM miss0r: morning
12:52 AM Bleepshop: miss0r: Finally get some sleep?
12:53 AM miss0r: yup. And took care of the first costumer
12:53 AM miss0r: Now I am back doing research on my flyback
12:56 AM * Bleepshop is alternating between cleaning the shop, feeding the fire and trying to get the cat unglued from his ass.
02:42 AM randy: morning
03:12 AM Deejay: moin
05:11 AM Tom_L: morning
05:58 AM Loetmichel: Ah, well. Coworker just asked "can you lend me one of your digital calipers?" $me:"Here"..."Wah, plastic? do you really use them for precision work?" $me: "sure, 0.1mm accuracy is enough for most things, and they dont short anything out... "true... never thought of that." "neither did I until i welded one of the stainless steel ones to the bike battery lately." ;)
06:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
08:28 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/polygon/
08:28 AM Tom_L: if you wanna look
08:29 AM Tom_L: parameters are sides, circle radius and switch
08:29 AM Tom_L: just double click on them to change
08:29 AM JT-Cave: cool
08:29 AM Tom_L: didn't finish the 'publishing' part of it
08:29 AM Tom_L: i think that creates an icon
08:30 AM Tom_L: if they are collapsed, just expand the Polygon in the list on the left
08:31 AM JT-Cave: ok
08:31 AM JT-Cave: off to start my day
08:31 AM Tom_L: sides must be >=3, radius >0 and switch is a pulldown
08:32 AM Tom_L: me too
09:50 AM perry_j1987: morning
10:01 AM perry_j1987: mmm coffee
10:01 AM * flyback sinks his teeth into buzzmarshall's leg
10:01 AM flyback: BMCC
12:17 PM unterhaus: What's the smallest useful heat treating oven? I might heat treat plane blades and chisels, for example
12:18 PM roycroft: i have a little oven that is about 250cm x 250cm x 250cm that i use for heat treating
12:18 PM XXCoder: i saw that nifty programmable oven, but it cost so much money wow
12:19 PM roycroft: i would not want anything smaller than that
12:19 PM roycroft: you want to be able to put some kiln furniture or a piece of firebrick inside the oven
12:20 PM roycroft: and you want a bit of room around the parts you're heat treating so that the temperature will normalize and you won't have hot and cold spots
12:21 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB4d8Re1tFc hundred tons on a 100m Z axis.
12:22 PM roycroft: folks have used small toaster ovens for heat treament, but with mixed results
12:22 PM CloudEvil: 10m/min.
12:23 PM XXCoder: roycroft: wonder if can alter to have PID and esp32
12:24 PM roycroft: i am sad, because i went to add a pid controller to my heat treating oven, and the heating element wire broke somewhere
12:24 PM roycroft: i have not found the break yet, and haven't done the repair
12:25 PM roycroft: that wire gets really brittle once it's heated, and turning the oven upside down so i could access the bottom panel to install the temperature probe and connectors for the pid controller apparently caused something to shift, causing the break
12:25 PM roycroft: it's not terribly expensive to get new heating element coils, but they're kind of fiddly to install
12:25 PM roycroft: it's on my list of things to deal with this spring
12:28 PM unterhaus: so it's 250mm of usable space inside?
12:28 PM unterhaus: wait, cm? or mm?
12:28 PM roycroft: yes
12:29 PM roycroft: mm
12:29 PM roycroft: did i say cm?
12:29 PM unterhaus: yeah
12:29 PM roycroft: sorry
12:29 PM roycroft: 10"
12:29 PM XXCoder: 250cm would be pretty big
12:29 PM unterhaus: I wonder how much it would cost to have the outside laser cut
12:30 PM roycroft: you need to decide how hot you want to be able to set the oven
12:30 PM unterhaus: I used to have an oven with 2" diameter holes on the ends. So it was great if you wanted to heat treat the middle portion of a sword
12:30 PM roycroft: so you know how thick your refractory layer needs to be
12:31 PM roycroft: a lot of knife/swordmakers have ovens like that
12:31 PM roycroft: or small forges that they also use for heat treatment
12:32 PM unterhaus: do you have to coat the refractory layer
12:33 PM roycroft: many don't, but a bit of kiln wash helps hold the bricks together, if you're using bricks
12:34 PM roycroft: and as far as the outer enclosure, you could pretty easily use some galvanized sheet metal to fabricate it, and use pop rivets to assemble the enclosure
12:34 PM roycroft: mine has a front door that swings up and out of the way, which is nice
12:34 PM unterhaus: a client has these big sheets of some kind of ceramic insulation
12:35 PM unterhaus: he's only using one or two and said he would give me one
12:35 PM unterhaus: I'm concerned for his lungs too though, if he should coat it
12:42 PM unterhaus: It really does help adhesion to take the protective film off of the PEI. According to someone I know, anyway
12:49 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/313838657174
12:49 PM roycroft: that is similar to my oven, although mine is older and currently is completely analog
01:01 PM Anim[m]: When will LinuxCNC 2.9 version be released?
01:02 PM molybdenum is now known as verm__
01:03 PM htasta: Anim[m]: tomorrow :P
01:08 PM roycroft: the day after you have your 2.8 install fully fine-tuned and working smoothly
01:09 PM unterhaus: they are only now starting to talk about what should be in 2.9, so release will be some number of months from now
01:15 PM unterhaus: If you need some feature that's in master, using that is an option, but it's not trivial
03:01 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, iirc andypugh made a heat treat oven
03:14 PM JanneKro: andypugh : Oh Hi! :)
03:20 PM JanneKro: I'm thinking about creating some-kind of a simple 'comedi_dio' component that one could switch to from, say 'hal_parport', and then possibly build on it with other functionality (counters, AO, AI). Any LinuxCNC-hacker around to give me some pointers?
03:28 PM unterhaus: JanneKro, that used to be one of my ambitions, but I'm afraid nowadays I wouldn't be much help
03:30 PM unterhaus: this morning I didn't think I would ever get a good 3d print, but I just had one turn out great
03:40 PM unterhaus: Tom_L, if I only got half as much done as andy I would be pretty happy with myself. Going to get working thatching the roof soon
03:51 PM JanneKro: unterhaus, Any particular technical reason that it stayed merely an ambition? Or just personal?
04:28 PM unterhaus: I think it's a good idea, I just didn't think it was worth it. And that was just pre-Hal too, so it would have had to be rewritten
04:29 PM unterhaus: I wouldn't mind being able to do a/d using hal though
04:29 PM unterhaus: OTOH, there are some mesa cards that are almost capable of what I need
04:38 PM JanneKro: unterhaus I created a post on the forum about my plans on building a lathe and making it CNC while I'm at it. And because I happen to have a NI-6025E laying around, I thought it might be a good challenge to get it working. Still have a lot to learn before I get there. However, unlike our conclusion we came to in the forum-post, I don't think I
04:38 PM JanneKro: need to even use the counters to get > 1KHz... So as I said above, simply making a 'comedi_io' would merely replace a parallel-port for everyone who has a comedi-supported card. It would be an interesting enough of a step to gain more reasons to utilize AO/AI and counters (for encoders)
04:51 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, you live in a straw hut?
04:53 PM _unreal_: I alwyas wanted to
05:02 PM JanneKro: Tom_L, I have a straw hat, does that count?
05:03 PM JanneKro: ah who am I kidding. I don't have one. :(
05:13 PM _unreal_: poser
05:33 PM _unreal_: enjoying Guinness beer
05:33 PM _unreal_: thinking about taking the kid out to eat tonight
05:45 PM t4nk_freenode: poser
05:47 PM unterhaus: JanneKro I have a whole pile of NI cards because everyone switched to usb
05:47 PM unterhaus: not sure if I have that exact one though
05:48 PM unterhaus: this computer has a 6032
05:49 PM unterhaus: that's nice that comedi supports it, I'll have to think about that
05:51 PM _unreal_: well taking the kid out. prob to CECI'S
05:51 PM _unreal_: A PIZZA joint all you can eat
05:51 PM _unreal_: the china buffy is closed on mondays :(
05:51 PM _unreal_: sigh
05:51 PM _unreal_: and the was that was FREAKING AMAZING closed like 3-3.5 years ago :(
05:51 PM _unreal_: no idea why
05:52 PM _unreal_: took my daughter there once. it was wonderful.
05:52 PM _unreal_: oh well
05:52 PM t4nk_freenode: typical... all you can eat
05:52 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
05:53 PM t4nk_freenode: always hunting for the greedy angle
05:54 PM jdh: I have lots of PCI NI cards. I have had a few issues with USB ones.
05:54 PM t4nk_freenode: dinner should be just like I made it today; only able to keep down if you're incredibly hungry
05:56 PM Tom_L: _unreal_, 5 guys
05:56 PM Tom_L: you got those down there?
06:01 PM Tom_L: not sure what it is but CICI's isn't pizza
06:43 PM JT-Shop: you got that right
06:43 PM Tom_L: hah
06:45 PM Tom_L: ever get a chance try a 5 guys
06:45 PM Tom_L: burgers
06:45 PM JT-Shop: never seen one
06:46 PM Tom_L: based out of virginia
06:46 PM Tom_L: not greasy as burgers go
06:47 PM JT-Shop: I had a Big River Wrap and a bottle of Norton for lunch today
06:48 PM Tom_L: arnold mo?
06:48 PM Tom_L: i had a salad for lunch
06:49 PM Tom_L: jackson or memphis Tn
06:53 PM JT-Shop: River Ridge Winery in Commerce MO
06:53 PM Tom_L: sounds inviting
06:58 PM JT-Shop: it is... if you ride with us you have to ride in the back of the Corvette...
07:00 PM JT-Shop: one time the wife said put it behind the seat... I told her there is no behind the seat in a Corvette lol
07:01 PM Tom_L: not much for sure
07:30 PM perry_j1987_: oh man these bolts are not removeable
07:30 PM perry_j1987_: bolted some alum pieces together and now i cant remove the bolts
07:30 PM t4nk_freenode: ;) sounds like a challenge
07:30 PM perry_j1987_: like they are gauled in
07:33 PM Tom_L: no lube prior to install
07:34 PM perry_j1987_: nope
07:34 PM perry_j1987_: never had this happen before
07:34 PM perry_j1987_: galvonic issue?
07:34 PM perry_j1987_: zinc coated bolts through aluminum?
07:42 PM Tom_L: or maybe cad
07:43 PM Tom_L: stainless
07:51 PM _unreal_: perry_j1987_, heat
07:54 PM perry_j1987_: broke a bolt got it out though
07:54 PM perry_j1987_: ya going to get the clearance holes bit bigger now before i put it back together
09:41 PM perry_j1987: hmm seems i stripped the belt on my mini lathe finally
09:56 PM perry_j1987: nope not the belt
09:56 PM perry_j1987: the drive pulley on the motor is completely toothless
09:58 PM Tom_L: so probably both
09:59 PM perry_j1987: ya belt has 20mm of teeth missing
09:59 PM perry_j1987: and drive gear teeth missing
09:59 PM perry_j1987: now would be a great time to put a brushless on here i guess heh
10:00 PM perry_j1987: or maybe buy a vfd for the big lathe haha
10:18 PM t4nk_freenode: I'll bite the bullet tomorrow, and disassemble my cnc to replace the bearings
10:19 PM t4nk_freenode: get it over with
11:47 PM perry_j1987: so guess what
11:47 PM perry_j1987: that VFD that exploded
11:48 PM perry_j1987: i just wired it all back in so i didnt forget where all the wires go
11:48 PM perry_j1987: and for giggles i flipped the switch and the LCD turned on lol
