02:38 AM Deejay: moin
06:05 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:50 AM unterhaus: morning, 22F in pennsyltucky
08:13 AM JT-Cave: 19°F in Swamp East Missouri
08:16 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:16 AM perry_j1987: 5 here
09:11 AM Tom_L: https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/12641/12-proposed-us-states-didnt-make-cut
09:12 AM XXCoder: wow old article. OI was wondering if it was repeat or not lol
11:25 AM perry_j1987: quiet in here today
11:35 AM Bleepshop: Up to 39F outside now. It was 28F 2 hours ago.
12:26 PM _unreal_: 70's here :)
12:41 PM roycroft: it's going to get up to 17 here again today
12:48 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Yeah, but you're using C not F so it's not as bad as it sounds. LOL
12:50 PM roycroft: it's actually quite lovely
12:51 PM roycroft: i have a meeting this afternoon, and we decided to meet at the country fair site, so we can walk around and enjoy the day
12:51 PM roycroft: i'm even contemplating wearing shorts
12:52 PM roycroft: and i'm not some dumbass millennial/genexer - i come from a generation that dresses appropriately for the weather :)
12:52 PM Bleepshop: 17F here was 0% humidity, whiteout conditions and even the woodstove was like"Screw this. I'm just gonna slack.".
01:50 PM flyback: https://www.cnx-software.com/2021/09/14/ch9102f-a-replacement-for-cp2104-usb-to-uart-bridge/ <--- nice cause silicon labs discontinued the cp2104, and their new cp2102n offical board doesn't have the vio pin which lets you set the i/o voltage, this one does
01:52 PM XXCoder: roycroft: im gen x and I like shorts :P
02:07 PM roycroft: correct
02:07 PM roycroft: i like wearing shorts as well
02:07 PM roycroft: when it is shorts weather
02:07 PM roycroft: i do not wear shorts in the snow
02:07 PM XXCoder: me either, though I wear shorts around 60-75% of year
02:08 PM roycroft: so when i bought the ssd for my imac, i bought a copy of carbon copy cloner to assist with the data migration from the old disk to the new
02:08 PM roycroft: and it worked brilliantly, but when i finished migrating, i found that i was only able to use 1TB of my 2TB disk
02:09 PM roycroft: i wrote support at ccc asking if they had any idea what was going on, and within minutes they asked me to send them logs of the migration
02:09 PM roycroft: the next morning they wrote back informing me that this is a bug that they had reported to apple over a year ago
02:09 PM roycroft: i wanted to reserve 1TB for my operating system, and use the rest of the disk for data
02:10 PM roycroft: the bug is that apple reserve the 1TB on the boot partition, not the os partition
02:10 PM roycroft: the boot partition should only be 100MB or so
02:10 PM roycroft: which is what it showed as used, but still reserved 1TB that i could never use
02:11 PM roycroft: they told me that i would unfortunately have to do the whole process over, without reserving any disk for the os partition, a procedure that would have the machine down for about 2 days
02:12 PM roycroft: but the next day the owner emailed me back and said he thought about it, and worked out a 15 step plan to reinstall mac os on a new parition, migrate all the data, and delete the old boot partition
02:12 PM roycroft: i am almost done doing that now and it's only taking a couple hours
02:12 PM roycroft: so kudos to them, and any mac users, even though you can get a trial copy of ccc for free, spend the $40 and buy it
02:13 PM XXCoder: nice
02:13 PM roycroft: i made sure i could boot off my old disk before i started this today, so i am wearing both suspenders and a belt
02:13 PM roycroft: yes, it's sadly unusual for a software house to be that responsive these days
02:14 PM roycroft: i felt i should make a point of mentioning them
02:15 PM roycroft: and going from ssd to ssd, the files are migrating at 125MB/s
02:15 PM roycroft: which is also really nice
02:29 PM miss0r: I'm frying mosfet gate drivers and mosfets left and right here :) if someone in here has a clue and want to spend 2 minuts doing a sanity check on my flyback design here I would realy appreciate it:
02:29 PM miss0r: http://www.acmservice.dk/files/cgmain.pdf
02:36 PM Bleepshop: miss0r: I can check it, but I can't make any guaranties about sanity. LOL
02:37 PM miss0r: hehe. I'll take what I can get, thanks
02:41 PM Bleepshop: I see an issue wih L1 right off the bat. 5 turn primary, 400 turn secondary ? That's 1:80 so I'm guessing a Tesla coil driver?
02:44 PM miss0r: capacitor charger for a coilgun :)
02:47 PM skunkworks: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LK9RMTvMf7hsFbMx6
02:47 PM Bleepshop: Simpler solution with integrated heat-sink and current sensing. Use your same Arduino and HV sections and replace the MOSFET/Driver with one of these. https://www.amazon.com/BTS7960-Stepper-H-Bridge-Compatible-Raspberry/dp/B098X4SJR8
02:48 PM miss0r: Bleepshop: But that will not handle upwards of 75 amps :)
02:48 PM Bleepshop: skunkworks: You've lost your threading gearbox!
02:49 PM Bleepshop: miss0r: No, but you can double the input voltage to 24V and pump 35A through them all day if you get the good ones.
02:51 PM skunkworks: Bleepshop: gantry is holding it up around the corner
02:55 PM miss0r: Bleepshop: Those things do look interresting. But any reason my design is scrapped? or do you think it could work?
03:03 PM Bleepshop: miss0r: I just tend to use generic modules. I've got several of those in everything from a 300+lb remote controled power wheelchair chassis with a winch for heavy lifting to a toy tank to annoy the cat with. LOL
03:05 PM Bleepshop: Other thna that you'd have to find somebody that can read and interpret the datasheet for the MOSFET/Driver pair. I'm so old that I know how to build an audio power amp out of TO-3 canned 2N3055's.
03:06 PM miss0r: hehe. I've only ever replaced those. But I know my way around a soldering iron
03:09 PM Bleepshop: miss0r: The other thing I might try if you're running multiples of this circuit is just grab a high-power RC ESC for a brushless motor and run 3 transformers in a Y per ESC.
03:09 PM miss0r: hah.. Yeah, that could work as well.
03:10 PM Bleepshop: Slap an extra heat-sink and fan on them to make up for the loss of airflow.
03:13 PM miss0r: Bleepshop: That chould work- I would however realy like to have an arduino in there to handle other stuff about running this thing. :)
03:14 PM miss0r: I just uploaded a video of my 3-stage 50 volt coilgun firing a shot, if you are interrested?
03:22 PM Rhine_Labs: Pretty vintage scope.. https://youtu.be/er_TjkDMl_I

03:40 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:40 PM Bleepshop: miss0r: You'll still need the Arduino with the ESC to generate the drive signals. However you can daisy-chain several of them off of one I/O pin if they all need the same drive.
03:40 PM Bleepshop: Rhine_Labs: I'll take it! it'll save me from having to rebuild the HV driver section in the older one I have. LOL
03:41 PM miss0r: anyway. I will hit the hay. Early morning. i.e. if I just fell asleep *NOW* I would be able to scrape together 6 hours of sleep. so.. yeah. See you around
03:41 PM Bleepshop: Not bad, not bad. See you later.
04:04 PM Rhine_Labs: It may go up as trading stock..
07:34 PM Bleepshop: Rhine_Labs: Need any matched Nema-17's ?
07:36 PM roycroft: i'm considering getting nema 34 motors for my router
07:36 PM roycroft: not because i need more power than i can get with my nema 23 motors
07:36 PM roycroft: but because i can get nema 34 motors with longer shafts than i can find on nema 23 motors
07:39 PM Bleepshop: Rhine_Labs: Or I can set you p with a 4 pack of Epson receipt printers and a half dozen cases [300 rolls] of 3" paper but we'd have to work out something on the shipping. LOL
07:41 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Are you using leadscrews or belts?
07:43 PM roycroft: i'll be using ball screws, but the motors will not be direct coupled
07:44 PM roycroft: they will be connected to the ball screws via timing gears and belts
07:45 PM roycroft: real estate is very expensive in my shop, and i cannot afford the cost of motors protruding out the ends/sides of my router
07:46 PM roycroft: and gee, i thought new zealanders were nice people
07:46 PM roycroft: but there's a "freedom convoy" thing happening there, like in canada
07:47 PM roycroft: but in new zealand, the police are being extremely brutal in their pushback
07:47 PM roycroft: they are blasting barry manilow hits towards the protestors, as well as "macarena" by los del rio
07:48 PM roycroft: i do believe that constitutes torture under the geneva conventions
07:51 PM * roycroft thinks the only thing they could do that is worst is blast abba hits
08:20 PM Bleepshop: No, worse would be if the protesters actually did the Macarena to the music and then started yelling "Encore! Encore!" at the cops... xD
08:22 PM Bleepshop: Fight brutality with comedy and suddenly nobody on the other side wants to play the game because there are witnesses... Laughing at them or scolding them... Either way they can't stand the negative attention...
08:27 PM * roycroft does not want to picture truck drivers doing the macarena - that is an image that would likely scar him for life
08:28 PM _unreal_: ok weekend from hell so far
08:28 PM _unreal_: sigh....
08:28 PM roycroft: welcome to the club
08:28 PM roycroft: although the weather was magnificent
08:29 PM _unreal_: I've been enjoying sun and mid 60's
08:29 PM roycroft: and i had a very lovely afternoon out at the fair site, enjoying the wonderful weather
08:29 PM _unreal_: I am sure you cant beat that
08:29 PM roycroft: it was 18 and mostly sunny here today, so pretty much the same
08:29 PM _unreal_: BS thats below freezing
08:30 PM roycroft: not when one is using real degrees :)
08:30 PM roycroft: 18 real degrees ~= archaic degrees
08:31 PM roycroft: 18 real degrees ~= 65 archaic degrees
08:31 PM roycroft: sorry
08:31 PM Tom_L: ok finally got the polygon macro to work
08:31 PM Tom_L: inscribed / circumscribed
08:31 PM roycroft: it's about time
08:31 PM Tom_L: i know
08:31 PM Tom_L: it covered some things i hadn't taken in class
08:31 PM roycroft: you've only been working on that since the reagan administration :)
08:31 PM Tom_L: lincoln
08:32 PM Tom_L: no i took a break
08:32 PM roycroft: i don't like presidents who died in office
08:32 PM Tom_L: now i'm working on 'publishing' it to create an icon
08:40 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: And you're discovering that trying to get anything into either app store is a PITA ?
08:40 PM Tom_L: huh?
08:41 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Sorry, thought you were working on a mobile device app.
08:41 PM Tom_L: nope
08:41 PM Tom_L: but i can imagine
08:45 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Actually the sight of a bunch of truckers doing the Macarena might be enough to cause the various political figures to abandon their offices and flee in a fit of pique after witnessing people who have declared them 'irrelevant' and cut them off from a booze resupply... LOL
09:20 PM roycroft: not even politicians deserve that
09:40 PM perry_j1987: hmm how do you think these would work for limit switches https://amzn.to/3rM8v5W
09:41 PM Tom_L: don't think i would trust them for consistency
09:42 PM perry_j1987: https://amzn.to/3gGAcH5
09:42 PM Tom_L: i could wave a bar of metal near them
09:42 PM perry_j1987: how about these
09:42 PM perry_j1987: well ya i can make sure things are clean before homing the machine etc
09:42 PM Tom_L: i prefer a hard switch or maybe an interupter
09:43 PM perry_j1987: how are photo interupters for repeatability
09:44 PM Tom_L: they used some on some surplus medical equipment i got a long time ago
09:45 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/new_pulleys/old_pulley2.jpg
09:45 PM Tom_L: i used one off an old printer for spindle control for a while
09:45 PM Tom_L: left side)
09:45 PM perry_j1987: aye
09:45 PM Tom_L: no issues
09:47 PM perry_j1987: k
09:47 PM perry_j1987: going to start movie now talk later
09:47 PM Tom_L: i used some cheap roller switches on mine and they work fine
09:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Assembly/Y_Axis_limitswitches1.jpg
09:48 PM Tom_L: just make sure the roller points the right direction or you may bend it
09:53 PM captain_morgan: i've got some gcode being produced by freecad path wb, it's a grid of squares and it looks fine in the preview, and in linuxcnc but for the first pass 3 corners get rounded out
09:54 PM captain_morgan: I think I recall this being a gcode feature? probably can be turned off
09:54 PM Tom_L: G61? 64? i forget and didn't look it up
09:55 PM Bleepshop: captain_morgan: G67 ? Path tolerance anyway. I had the same issue a while back.
09:55 PM Tom_L: G61-exact path mode, G64 path blending
09:56 PM Tom_L: Bleepshop, lcnc doesn't support G67
09:56 PM captain_morgan: cool, I'll start with 61
09:56 PM Tom_L: maybe you meant ^^
09:56 PM Bleepshop: Yeah, 61 is it.
09:56 PM Tom_L: it may make it jerky
09:57 PM Tom_L: not intended for polylines etc
09:57 PM Bleepshop: Makes it slow down and stop for corners.
09:57 PM captain_morgan: I'll slow it down, all the lines are straight
09:57 PM captain_morgan: and must be straight, it's a measuring device
09:59 PM Bleepshop: captain_morgan: I didn't say for you to slow it down I meant that the machine will stop at every corner.
10:00 PM Bleepshop: Like leave a bit burning stock for a second.
10:02 PM Bleepshop: It's OK for metals but you'll be sanding burn marks off your wood everywhere the tool pauses.
10:02 PM captain_morgan: this is going to be a very light score in acrylic
10:04 PM captain_morgan: excellent, that's worked great
10:25 PM srk| is now known as srk
