01:45 AM Deejay: moin
03:43 AM solarwind_: I bought the everlast 253DPi. Forgot to get extra contact tips and drive rollders for 0.035" wire
03:44 AM solarwind_: It came with 0.30 rollers, but none specifically marked for 0.035.
03:44 AM solarwind_: Is it ok to use a smaller roller and slightly larger contact tip just for a bit of testing before the specific parts are delivered?
05:10 AM Tom_L: morning
05:12 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, been working on this a bit last night: https://grabcad.com/tutorials/catia-v5-polygon-udf
05:28 AM JT-Cave: MORNING
05:36 AM JT-Cave: needs to be a double polygon with the outside diameter tangent to the line and the inside diameter tangent to the end point
06:26 AM Loetmichel: *boooarpppsss* Friday is "ordering schnitzel plus bacon-bratkartoffeln" day... maaan now i am full! :)
07:31 AM Loetmichel: *gaaah* How stupid can i be? Just ground and strapped a new cutting edge onto a 1.5" putty knife... and "tested" it immediatly afterwars by cutting open my pointing finger. :(
07:43 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, it can be run 2x to get that i think
07:43 AM Tom_L: it would be 2 different circles
07:44 AM Tom_L: Fig 13
08:23 AM JT-Cave: for me inputing the length and width of the segment in round numbers and seeing what the resulting circles are makes more sense
08:23 AM JT-Cave: it's hard to cut a segment 2.3344024" long
08:33 AM Tom_L: i just happened upon that and thought i might try it
08:41 AM perry_j1987: mornin
09:11 AM t4nk_freenode: lo
09:18 AM perry_j1987: i got the lathe back together
09:18 AM perry_j1987: i think i found the goldielox zone for the saddle gibs
09:18 AM perry_j1987: lol
09:36 AM perry_j1987: whats everyones plan for the day
09:42 AM t4nk_freenode: printing the first of my new bearing desing as a tester
09:42 AM t4nk_freenode: and I guess on a lesser note.. trying to turn lead into gold
09:46 AM perry_j1987: alchemy eh
09:46 AM perry_j1987: printing a holder for a bearing or printing a bearing itself??
09:49 AM t4nk_freenode: holder to hold bal bearings
09:51 AM t4nk_freenode: redesigned what used to be some kind of bushing, but it's not lasting so I'm putting bearings in
09:51 AM perry_j1987: what is it in
09:51 AM t4nk_freenode: my diy cnc
09:53 AM t4nk_freenode: it's basically still ok-ish, but I can't get a grip on the backlash, it's become a bit inconsistent
09:53 AM t4nk_freenode: if I want accuracy, I need to home all the time
09:54 AM perry_j1987: mill or lathe
09:54 AM t4nk_freenode: mill
09:54 AM t4nk_freenode: wish I had a lathe ;)
09:56 AM perry_j1987: you could
09:56 AM perry_j1987: i'll sell you one :P
09:57 AM t4nk_freenode: ;)
09:57 AM Loetmichel: *shudder* MAN does metallized, self-adhesive nylon fabric STINK in the laser cutter. At least that PCB is now shielded all around. Lets see if the measurement of the IP-Phone on monday shows if that had helped. :)
10:00 AM t4nk_freenode: how's the situation around the car, Loetmichel?
10:01 AM Loetmichel: car is back, with a "new" used differential. lets see what fails next ;)
10:02 AM t4nk_freenode: mmm I thought it was unfixable
10:02 AM t4nk_freenode: well, that's good news then
10:02 AM Loetmichel: the diff itself was unfixable
10:02 AM Loetmichel: probably because it wasnt meant for that car
10:03 AM Loetmichel: mechanic told me it was about 50% size of the one that is MEANT to sit there in the 318i
10:03 AM Loetmichel: buy used cars get funny problems :(
10:03 AM t4nk_freenode: ... do you know that ep of married with children.. where Al pushes his car around instead of driving? ;)
10:05 AM Loetmichel: nah
10:15 AM roycroft: it's friday!
10:21 AM unterhaus: my extruder is putting out about half what it's supposed to, that's not good, is it?
10:22 AM unterhaus: you can send gcode to the printer over IP, but all it ever sends back is "ok"
10:24 AM unterhaus: would be nice to know what the extruder scaling is
10:37 AM roycroft: perhaps your slicer thinks you're using larger diameter filament than you are actually using
11:05 AM unterhaus: I sent it a g1 E100 gcode, so the scaling setting is messed up in the firmware
11:05 AM unterhaus: I have heard that slicers might change that though
11:10 AM unterhaus: reset to factory settings and now it's putting out too much :)
11:11 AM unterhaus: specifically 3x too much
11:19 AM unterhaus: apparently you can tell the extruder to go backwards
11:20 AM unterhaus: through the steps/mm
11:22 AM t4nk_freenode: what printer do you have?
11:24 AM XXCoder: unterhaus: should have gcode to display eprom info
11:24 AM XXCoder: such as steps for extruder so on
11:26 AM perry_j1987: there we go i got x and z offsets setup for each of the tools
11:30 AM unterhaus: XXCoder m503 should display settings, but all I get is "ok"
11:31 AM * t4nk_freenode pulls a fine part off his printer
11:31 AM unterhaus: granted I'm refusing to move the printer to the basement again to see if the usb works with linus
11:32 AM unterhaus: linux
11:32 AM XXCoder: odd. display show anything?
11:34 AM unterhaus: no
11:35 AM t4nk_freenode: life's too short to be messing around with printer settings I say
11:35 AM XXCoder: that sucks.
11:35 AM unterhaus: only have to mess with them once
11:35 AM t4nk_freenode: I never messed with any.. I just installed Cura and I was good to go
11:36 AM unterhaus: it's just that all the words on the internet fail to properly convey how to do it, so I'm on a trip of discovery
11:36 AM t4nk_freenode: bed leveling is a different matter though, but it takes a decent while for it to go off
11:36 AM unterhaus: leveling is pretty easy on this, just takes an allen wrench
11:36 AM XXCoder: thankfully you should be able to measure movements and scale it properly
11:36 AM XXCoder: it sould be all round numbers
11:37 AM unterhaus: the wiki doesn't have round numbers
11:37 AM unterhaus: also doesn't say how to do it
11:37 AM XXCoder: talking about steps per mm
11:37 AM XXCoder: there should be another gcode to edit values, and also to save bacj
11:38 AM XXCoder: oh https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/eeprom_MPSelectMini/
11:38 AM XXCoder: it generates gcode for you
11:39 AM XXCoder: its for octoprint, but probably have others
11:39 AM XXCoder: https://www.mpselectmini.com/extruder_calibration
11:39 AM XXCoder: found it
11:40 AM XXCoder: its for malyan m200, but its just rebranded of same machine
11:42 AM unterhaus: heh, I realized it went backwards because I didn't reset the axis
11:43 AM unterhaus: I have been staring at that page and found it lacking. For example, they just send you off to a generic youtube
11:48 AM XXCoder: it should be pretty strightforward, though lack of output bah heh maybe just try all default values there and see?
11:49 AM unterhaus: I just reset to factory again and it printed 100mm when asked for 100mm, so hopefully I won't mess it up again
11:49 AM XXCoder: nice :)
11:50 AM unterhaus: I think I fiddled around with cura too much
11:50 AM unterhaus: I tried to make more fill because I want some threaded holes
11:52 AM XXCoder: cool :) though if its suppose to ve poretty strong, its better to use inserts
11:54 AM unterhaus: I was thinking about using inserts
11:54 AM XXCoder: i tried em for first time while ago, and it was quite good. just be careful not to sink em lol
11:55 AM XXCoder: petg its bit tricky. im pretty sure pla its worse
12:00 PM unterhaus: I have some practice parts
12:00 PM unterhaus: amazon thinks I would be interested in a 4gb RPi4 for $155, but I'm good
12:01 PM XXCoder: kit of alone?
12:01 PM XXCoder: *or
12:03 PM unterhaus: seems like it's just the board
12:04 PM unterhaus: of course, everyone else is OOS
12:04 PM XXCoder: wow expenbsive
12:04 PM unterhaus: but I have 2 and don't see a reason for any more
12:04 PM XXCoder: I bought kit and it totaled about $150? been a while
12:04 PM XXCoder: case, power, fan, sdcard etc
12:05 PM unterhaus: I got my first one in a kit and it cost 100 and I thought that was steep
12:05 PM unterhaus: added a different case for $12 or something
12:05 PM perry_j1987: Invalidated: Invalidation due to different value for parameter 'wcs_orientation_flipZ' with level 10.
12:05 PM perry_j1987: hmmm thanks fusion 360
12:06 PM XXCoder: probably a paradox somewhere
12:06 PM unterhaus: everyone knows you can't do that with wcs_orientaion_flipZ
12:06 PM roycroft: i paid $61.95 for the last rpi4 i got
12:06 PM roycroft: that vendor is out of stock, though, like everyone else
12:06 PM unterhaus: roycroft, when I went to that website you bought it from, it had disappeared
12:07 PM unterhaus: adafruit had them though
12:07 PM roycroft: chicagodist.com?
12:07 PM unterhaus: yeah
12:07 PM unterhaus: adafruit was about the same price
12:07 PM roycroft: they have the 1GB model in stock
12:07 PM roycroft: but every other version is sold out
12:08 PM roycroft: there's not much good coming out of this pandemic, but one potential good thing is that american manufacturers are finally figuring out that outsourcing much of their production is a fail
12:09 PM roycroft: there is significant investment happening in building chip plants in the us
12:09 PM unterhaus: yeah, when Chinese manufacturers have chips and nobody else does it makes ya think
12:10 PM unterhaus: well, I have been thinking that since the '80s, but some people are slow learners
12:11 PM roycroft: from a national security point of view alone it makes no sense to depend on foreign countries, especially those who are not allies, for raw materials and components that we need to manufacture products in this country
12:12 PM roycroft: the economic arguments are irrelevant
12:12 PM roycroft: we need to make stuff here in order to be able to defend our country
12:12 PM roycroft: i don't understand why everyone can't figure that out
12:13 PM unterhaus: DoD used to subsidize manufacturing here, probably still do
12:13 PM unterhaus: Just hasn't been working
12:14 PM roycroft: i guess when we have one political party cozying up to russia and taking their side in the ukrane situation that national security doesn't matter to them
12:14 PM roycroft: so perhaps that argument can't persuade them
12:14 PM unterhaus: it's an issue
12:15 PM roycroft: anyway, the pandemic is causing manufacturers to see that they can't rely on foreign sources for cheap components any more
12:18 PM * t4nk_freenode prints another 3 bearings
12:19 PM t4nk_freenode: then another 4 overnight
12:19 PM t4nk_freenode: 3 weeks of disassembly
12:19 PM t4nk_freenode: 4 weeks of assembly
12:19 PM t4nk_freenode: 9 months @ the hospital recovering from my injuries
12:19 PM t4nk_freenode: and I'm good to go!
03:27 PM perry_j1987: whole day shot cause of fusion 360
03:27 PM perry_j1987: nice
03:29 PM roycroft: there's an easy way to avoid that :)
03:35 PM perry_j1987: its glitching out the too library window
03:35 PM perry_j1987: like graphical tearing
03:38 PM JT-Shop: where do you start with a rather rough piece of 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" ebony?
03:41 PM roycroft: i would start by hand planing the four edges so they're smooth, then coat it with wax again and let it sit for a while
03:41 PM JT-Shop: it's coated with wax?
03:41 PM roycroft: hopefully
03:41 PM JT-Shop: I was wondering what that was
03:41 PM roycroft: otherwise it may be badly checked and useless
03:41 PM JT-Shop: it looked kinda waxy
03:42 PM JT-Shop: what kind of wax do you put on it?
03:43 PM roycroft: paraffin would be good
03:43 PM roycroft: but really, anything you have around would work
03:43 PM roycroft: the thicker and heavier the better
03:43 PM perry_j1987: hmm just loaded some gcode it finally produced and linuxcnc said bad character w used
03:43 PM perry_j1987: G28 W0 is one of the lines in the gcode
03:43 PM roycroft: ebony takes years to dry properly, and it should always be stored waxed until it's been cut really thin, like <1/2"
03:44 PM JT-Shop: thanks
03:44 PM roycroft: when i'm going to use a little, i toss some paraffin in a glass jar and set it in my hot glue pot to melt
03:44 PM roycroft: then i cut what i need and recoat the rest
03:44 PM JT-Shop: ok
03:45 PM roycroft: but yeah, what you have is probably coated with a thick layer of wax, and it's probably been very roughly cut with a really coarse bandsaw blade
03:45 PM JT-Shop: that's what it looks like
03:45 PM * roycroft is obviously familiar with ebony :)
03:46 PM JT-Shop: it's the first piece I've got
03:47 PM roycroft: make sure your tools are sharp
03:47 PM roycroft: and try to avoid using the tablesaw - it's too wasteful
03:48 PM JT-Shop: ok, does it sand well with the drum sander?
03:48 PM roycroft: i've never tried, nor do i think i would
03:48 PM roycroft: i should imagine it would burn up pretty easily
03:48 PM JT-Shop: ok, how do you work it? just hand tools?
03:48 PM roycroft: mostly with hand planes and scrapers
03:49 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks for the tips
03:49 PM roycroft: and yeah, it's *really* hard to work
03:49 PM roycroft: i usually cut it close to dimensions on the bandsaw
03:50 PM JT-Shop: does it bend very well? just trying to get a grip on where I might use a bit
03:51 PM roycroft: if you sand it to P600 you can then use a buffer with polishing compound and get an almost mirror-like finish
03:51 PM roycroft: and i would not try bending it at all - it is extremely brittle
03:51 PM JT-Shop: ok
03:51 PM roycroft: if you try to bend it i can almost guarantee sadness
03:56 PM perry_j1987: hmm i need to output g43 on tool changes for the linuxcnc turning post processor
03:56 PM perry_j1987: dont see a checkbox for that
04:16 PM roycroft: post processors tend to be xml files or some other form of text file, so you may be able to hand edit it
04:31 PM perry_j1987: ended up just search replace in text editor for now to add it after all the M6
04:31 PM perry_j1987: now i can finally make sure this gcode is setup right
04:39 PM roycroft: my crimper finally shipped, but it's not due to arrive until the 17th
04:39 PM roycroft: because i was told it would arrive on the 11th
04:39 PM roycroft: so maybe, maybe, next weekend i'll be able to get my 3d printer working again
04:41 PM perry_j1987: hmm now what happened there...
04:42 PM perry_j1987: tried threading on the new lathe and it moved the cutter way over no where near where it should be hmm
05:03 PM perry_j1987: ah figured it out
05:17 PM unterhaus: I didn't realize my router changed ip addresses around so much, gives my 3d printer a new IP every time
06:29 PM Rhine_Labs: Sup all
06:29 PM Rhine_Labs: Set it to a static ip
06:30 PM Rhine_Labs: Most router allow you to assign static ip to a specific mac address.
06:33 PM unreal: JUST GOT HOME what a f'ed up work day, no breaks no nothing fire drill no time already behind project out of the blue
06:49 PM roycroft: i generally carve out a dhcp pool in a network
06:49 PM roycroft: use that for hosts that can be dynamic
06:50 PM roycroft: and then assign static ips to the other hosts
06:50 PM roycroft: and funny this came up right now
06:50 PM roycroft: because i'm going to be working at the office of the non-profit for whom i volunteer tomorrow morning, doing exactly that
06:51 PM roycroft: i'll be reconfiguring their network, converting their wireless router to an access point, installing a vpn firewall as the gateway device, and setting up static ips from the provider
08:07 PM * t4nk_freenode smacks unreal over the head with an almost empty spool of PLA
08:07 PM t4nk_freenode: lucky you ;)
08:17 PM perry_j1987: g'evening
08:32 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/CTfYNZhOyRc
08:32 PM XXCoder: myfordboy makes gasolier by cast and machining
08:45 PM roycroft: there is a new clickspring video, and chris uses transfer screws!
08:46 PM XXCoder: havent watched that one
08:46 PM roycroft: i've been purchasing various sizes of transfer screws for a few years, and have used them several times
08:46 PM roycroft: where they are useful they are very useful
08:47 PM roycroft: but a lot of folks don't seem to know about them
08:47 PM roycroft: oh, the video is not public yet
08:47 PM roycroft: it will be in a few hours
08:47 PM XXCoder: ya saw in my email
08:48 PM roycroft: it's nothing mindblowing, but shows some really good methods of making things, like all clickspring videos
08:50 PM roycroft: you know, with most of the patreon video links i get, if i go view the video right after getting the link i'm usually view 0 or 3 or 5 or so
08:50 PM roycroft: with the clickspring ones, i'm usually view 500 or 800 or so
08:50 PM roycroft: he's a rather popular fellow
08:51 PM XXCoder: yup
08:52 PM XXCoder: I usually dont watch while its still unlisted because well captions dont always appear yet, though in case of clickspring, can view early but habit lol
08:59 PM roycroft: i don't often watch unlisted videos
08:59 PM roycroft: i usually wait until they're publkc
09:00 PM roycroft: or later - i just don't have time to watch most of that stuff right away, and it doesn't matter if i watch it right away
09:00 PM roycroft: but if i'm bored and an email comes in with a link to a new patreon video, sometimes i'll watch it to relieve boredom
09:07 PM XXCoder: :)
09:08 PM XXCoder: ford one was fun one
09:08 PM XXCoder: hes using 3d printing a lot more for while now
