01:24 AM Deejay: moin
01:56 AM randy: morning
05:05 AM Tom_L: morning
05:05 AM Tom_L: 26°F
05:21 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:14 AM unterhausen: we can only hope for mid-20s temperatures today
07:25 AM JT-Cave: sunny and 42°F here today
07:27 AM Tom_L: sunny and 55°F here today
07:28 AM Tom_L: most of the snow is gone
07:29 AM JT-Cave: we still have a lot of snow but it will go today I hope
07:31 AM Tom_L: mostly left in the shadows
07:41 AM unterhausen: we have a sheet of ice, best not run over any chunks with your car
07:43 AM unterhausen: slight revision: getting up to 37 today and sunny. That's nice
09:26 AM roycroft: i need to mow the lawn this week
09:30 AM roycroft: so last thursday (i had friday off): open work email, wait about 10 minutes for new mail since the day before to show up in inbox, slowly start reading messages that don't have attachments
09:31 AM roycroft: this morning: open work email, start reading new messages since last thursday
09:35 AM roycroft: this ssd takes away an excuse to not be able to respond to emails promptly
09:47 AM Loetmichel: *harummph* aaand another 288.85eur... that broken differential on the convertible gets expensive... had to extend the rental another week :(
09:55 AM unterhausen: Loetmichel, I was thinking about buying a dodge version of the sprinter. It turns out it's the same as Fiat and Renault
09:56 AM Loetmichel: unterhausen: yeah
09:56 AM unterhausen: seems like a weird trio of car companies
09:56 AM Loetmichel: i know, there is a lot of cooperation between the big motor companies in the transporter segment
09:56 AM Loetmichel: seems the only difference is the radiator grill and steering wheel logo ;)=
09:57 AM unterhausen: what brand was your transporter rental?
09:58 AM Loetmichel: Renault traffic
09:59 AM unterhausen: I wonder if that's the same chassis as the tall ones
09:59 AM unterhausen: what do you think of it?
10:01 AM Loetmichel: drives nicely, a bit underpowered, but a PAIN to park in europe (long wheelbase model)
10:01 AM unterhausen: parking is a concern, but in the U.S. it isn't that much of a problem
10:04 AM Loetmichel: unterhausen: well. i have a parking spot on the backyard of the house... i didnt use it with the trafic... not because i couldnt fit the parking there but getting the long car back out... the backyard is probably only 8m "deep". not fun to turn a 6m long car around in that ;)
10:10 AM unterhausen: Parking at the house will be the biggest issue. No place for it
10:10 AM unterhausen: Probably have to expand the driveway
10:22 AM unterhausen: my wife told me she was insisting that she be able to park in the garage today
10:22 AM unterhausen: did not say what the consequences would be
10:48 AM roycroft: the consquences, of course, are that if the car is not parked in the garage, you will be parked in the garage on a cot
10:51 AM unterhausen: no cots
10:52 AM unterhausen: fortunately the camping gear is all in the garage
10:57 AM sensille: i just found out linuxcnc does not follow the path from the gcode. it might be "cutter compensation"
10:57 AM sensille: how haven't i noticed that in 2 years???
10:59 AM sensille: probably because it happens that my 3mm endmill is normally tool 1, with diameter 0.125 in tool table
10:59 AM sensille: so how do i turn it off?
10:59 AM sensille: i tried to set the tool radius to something very small. do i reload something?
11:01 AM unterhausen: g40 turns off cutter comp
11:01 AM unterhausen: recommended to start a program with it
11:01 AM unterhausen: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.5/html/gcode/tool_compensation.html#sec:cutter-compensation
11:06 AM sensille: it still rounds the corners, even with G40 at the start of the program
11:06 AM sensille: i'm totally baffled
11:09 AM unterhausen: rounding corners is blending
11:10 AM sensille: https://i.imgur.com/SYE0AHi.jpg
11:10 AM unterhausen: g64, I think?
11:13 AM JT-Cave: sensille, http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/user/user-concepts.html#sec:trajectory-control
11:17 AM unterhausen: is there a web page that will tell me what I did with my scissors?
11:18 AM JT-Cave: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/lost-found-property-keys-how-to-find-study-university-aberdeen-clutter-a7593331.html
11:24 AM sensille: ok, it is blending. totally turning it off doesn't seem to be a smart move either. i wonder what changed in my config. i can't believe i would never have noticed rounding like that
11:26 AM * sensille tries G64P0.01
11:45 AM unterhausen: figured out where my scissors were, I carried them downstairs to the kitchen in a dirty dish
11:45 AM unterhausen: risking discovery of my very nice scissors
11:49 AM sensille: are the active gcodes persistent between restarts?
11:50 AM sensille: i can't find an option to set a gcode preamble in f360
11:54 AM abanim20[m]: Hi, can someone help me with
11:54 AM abanim20[m]: QtPlasmaC Proma150 THC configuration
12:09 PM unterhausen: that's probably too general of a question, maybe say what your problem is exactly?
12:26 PM abanim20[m]: Ok, when am doing a test cut using F9 the THC work for a while and the float switch is tripped and it stop moving up and down
01:06 PM JT-Shop: sounds like the knuter valve is sticking
01:46 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i didn't do the whole thing, just the basic cutter paths: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/Circle_jig.jpg
01:48 PM Tom_L: but then i don't need one :)
02:08 PM Vq_ is now known as Vq
02:28 PM unterhausen: abanim20[m]'s problem seems like it has to be noise, which really isn't a linuxcnc problem
02:54 PM bdju_ is now known as bdju
03:24 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, hmm I did a 16 too
03:31 PM htasta: hey guys, has someone experience with compiling v.2.8.0 on Linux Mint? I always get an error that libboost-python is needed but I have it installed and can compile current master no problem.
03:38 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: https://youtu.be/q6mW1G3pxFs
03:39 PM XXCoder: interesting idea. easy way to take trash to street if youre at remote place with very long driveway
03:42 PM JT-Shop: lol, my trash cans are down by the road so I put the trash on top of the tonneau cover and drive down to the road and pull out then back up when I see the trash is still there
03:44 PM unterhausen: XXCoder can I calibrate my extruder over wifi?
03:50 PM unterhausen: apparently you can't just send it a program that consists only of G1 E100 F30
03:52 PM roycroft: and there goes the matrix again
03:55 PM wonderer: looks like matrix is downing the ipv6 segment
03:55 PM wonderer: ifupdown seems to be not enabled or they upped a buggy firmware on the siwtches
03:58 PM _unreal_: hello
03:59 PM Rab: Hi!
03:59 PM _unreal_: whats new
04:00 PM Rab: Not much.
04:01 PM Rab: How's your new spindle?
04:10 PM _unreal_: dont know, I cant do anything with it. things just changed and I now have the "cnc I was working on last year back home"
04:10 PM _unreal_: I purchased parts to build a new newer build thats even bigger to match my laser etcher
04:10 PM _unreal_: so sigh
04:10 PM _unreal_: regardless this one needs to be finsiehd anyways
04:11 PM _unreal_: that 1/2" collet spindle is HUGE
04:11 PM _unreal_: :)
04:12 PM roycroft: it's average for a router
04:12 PM roycroft: most of my routers take 1/2" collets
04:13 PM Rab: _unreal_, ER-20?
04:13 PM roycroft: the 80mm spindle weighs less than my 3-1/2hp hand-held router
04:13 PM _unreal_: rab SI
04:36 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, oh ok... http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/Circle_jig.jpg
04:39 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/JT-SHOP/Circle_jig2.jpg
04:39 PM Tom_L: wasn't sure how long the slots need to be
04:52 PM JT-Shop: I need to look at the seg easy plans
04:53 PM Tom_L: just ul a new 2 with board boundaries
04:53 PM Tom_L: 16 x 16
04:54 PM JT-Shop: slot just needs to be big enough to accommodate all the segment pins
04:54 PM Tom_L: does your cad let you position text?
04:54 PM Tom_L: what size screw?
04:54 PM XXCoder: unterhausen: good question, I never did configure anything, it just worked.
04:54 PM JT-Shop: one thing I want to do is make it on both sides of the blade
04:54 PM Tom_L: i'm just messin around anyway
04:54 PM JT-Shop: yes I can engrave text along an arc or line
04:55 PM Tom_L: you got me wondering how to do it
04:55 PM Tom_L: ok
04:55 PM JT-Shop: how far apart is the pivot holes?
04:55 PM Tom_L: the yellow was intended for engraving
04:55 PM Tom_L: 4"
04:56 PM Tom_L: i haven't put any cutters on it yet just the spot holes
04:56 PM JT-Shop: I'm using 1/4"-20 carriage bolts
04:56 PM Tom_L: so probably 5/16 slot
04:57 PM JT-Shop: I make the slots .257" in metal...
04:57 PM Tom_L: you gonna make this from alum?
04:57 PM JT-Shop: need to measure the head and the square part
04:59 PM JT-Shop: I guess I didn't copy the seg-easy to the nas...
04:59 PM Tom_L: dunno if i saw that
04:59 PM JT-Shop: I'll go down to the beer cave in a bit and see
05:00 PM JT-Shop: prob mdf
05:03 PM XXCoder: jt did you see that video?
05:05 PM JT-Shop: <JT-Shop> lol, my trash cans are down by the road so I put the trash on top of the tonneau cover and drive down to the road and pull out then back up when I see the trash is still there
05:06 PM Tom_L: gonna spread it around the neighborhood?
05:07 PM JT-Shop: no one would notice across the road if it fell on their property lol
05:08 PM XXCoder: jt lol ok. tought I read all but olviously I missed some
05:08 PM XXCoder: cool idea though. useless for me as its literally 10 feet walk
05:08 PM JT-Shop: and don't try to back up with it
05:09 PM JT-Shop: I guess he doesn't leave the can down by the road
05:09 PM XXCoder: wouldnt be worse than if trash bin was in back
05:33 PM JT-Shop: Tom_L, https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiCxs353O71AhUSKX0KHdwfB_cQwqsBegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DclxeP2UDugQ&usg=AOvVaw1V_AWkZ0_ZGhV1D8nxSWLC
05:33 PM JT-Shop: damn google
05:33 PM XXCoder: link worked
05:34 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clxeP2UDugQ
05:34 PM XXCoder: wow old video
05:34 PM XXCoder: from around era I started watching his channel
05:34 PM XXCoder: older design of cnc among stuff changed.
05:35 PM XXCoder: no huge drawer and storage space
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: trying to compare Inventor CAM, to HSM CAM to Powermill all by Autodesk
05:35 PM XXCoder: man theres been a lot of changes.
05:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is basically useless https://sourceforge.net/software/compare/HSMWorks-vs-Inventor-CAM-vs-PowerMill/
05:37 PM XXCoder: "Pricing
05:37 PM XXCoder: No information available. " LOL
05:38 PM roycroft: the cost is ONE MILLION DOLLARS
05:38 PM * XXCoder touches pinkie tip to lips
05:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: most articles claim that Powermill is the most powerful but they are short on details
05:40 PM * JT-Shop orders a gallon of Tried and True
05:40 PM roycroft: i've been talking with the guy who has the "cad computer" for sale
05:40 PM roycroft: i let him know that i got a machine already
05:40 PM XXCoder: techicially rpi4 is a cad computer as it can run freecad
05:40 PM XXCoder: that terms is too vague heh
05:41 PM roycroft: he is having a hard time selling the one he has, though, and wants to know if i am interested in buying his copy of sw apart from the machine
05:41 PM roycroft: i'm tempted, if the price is right
05:41 PM roycroft: and if i can figure out a way to make sure that the ownership transfers to me properly
05:41 PM roycroft: it's 2018, and had camworks, so it would be a nice upgrade
05:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i have a CNC computer, CAD computer, blinkenlight computer, malwarez computer, etc etc
05:42 PM roycroft: camworks is supposed to work well
05:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i used to have a kills flash drive computer
05:42 PM roycroft: i have to sort out the license transfer thing though
05:43 PM roycroft: d'assault systemes won't do it - they refuse to recognize license transfers, even though legally they cannot prevent it
05:43 PM XXCoder: can always call company and find out
05:43 PM roycroft: what i'm thinking is that i'll have the guy deactivate it
05:43 PM roycroft: log into his account with them
05:43 PM roycroft: while i'm there
05:43 PM roycroft: and change the user to me, and let me set the password
05:44 PM roycroft: and then i would install it on my machine before i give him the money
05:44 PM roycroft: and activate it
05:44 PM roycroft: if it works he gets the cash
05:44 PM roycroft: if not i give him the password i just set
05:45 PM roycroft: but all this is premature
05:45 PM roycroft: first we need to settle on a price
05:45 PM roycroft: he wanted $1k for the computer + the license
05:46 PM roycroft: if i can get the license for $500 or less i'd be happy
05:46 PM roycroft: that's like 1/10 what it originally cost
05:46 PM roycroft: i'm only considering this because i've bought computers from him before, and he seems like an honest person
05:51 PM XXCoder: cool :)
05:52 PM roycroft: it would be a nice upgrade
05:52 PM roycroft: more compatible with modern windows, able to run the third-party plugins like the one at mcmaster, has solidcam built-in
05:53 PM roycroft: and would probably slow down my new computer so it performs like sw2012 in a vm :)
05:53 PM XXCoder: lol
05:55 PM roycroft: that's generally been my experience with windows software
05:55 PM roycroft: you get a new computer and everything runs a lot faster and you're happy
05:55 PM roycroft: then you start updating your apps and it slows down again
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's a feature
06:07 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i see what you're doing with the screw heads now
06:11 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/bowls/bowl-01.jpg
06:11 PM Tom_L: fancy
06:12 PM JT-Shop: kinda proud of the one on the right
06:12 PM Tom_L: yup
06:12 PM Tom_L: walnut?
06:12 PM Tom_L: ring
06:13 PM JT-Shop: aye black walnut
06:14 PM Tom_L: do you have any walnut trees around there?
06:14 PM JT-Shop: yea
06:14 PM JT-Shop: I have one I need to cut down...
06:14 PM Tom_L: need more wood for bowls ehh?
06:14 PM JT-Shop: never can tell...
06:15 PM XXCoder: wood you need more wood?
06:15 PM Tom_L: i did some candle holders in HS with walnut and i think ash or birch
06:15 PM JT-Shop: always need wood
06:15 PM Tom_L: that was a day or so ago
06:25 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Snapper/Knob5.jpg
06:26 PM JT-Shop: nice
06:26 PM Tom_L: i think the ridges could have been a larger radius
06:26 PM Tom_L: for the mower bag chute :)
06:27 PM Tom_L: (i was watching frank make his wood knobs)
06:29 PM * JT-Shop wanders inside and closes up the coops
08:47 PM andypugh_ is now known as andypugh
10:46 PM Bleepshop: JT-Shop: You need Ash? I've got access to piles of it and could probably even wrangle a few full bole rounds.
10:47 PM Bleepshop: In fact I need to run out to the firewood operation and snag a new chunk for a chopping block this week.
11:50 PM roycroft: i'm still using up all the ash shorts (some of which are 4' long) from my workbency build
11:51 PM roycroft: and i build that workbench at the beginning of the pandemic, so a long long time ago
11:58 PM XXCoder: each year feels like 5
