01:54 AM Deejay: moin
02:15 AM XXCoder: merry xmas all
02:18 AM randy: morning
03:02 AM miss0r: This ZVS driver is giving me a headache!
03:03 AM miss0r: Worked perfectly last night. Now when I add a load to it, it stops ocilating and starts generating heat on the mosfets instead :S
03:05 AM miss0r: also, merry christmas
05:24 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:35 AM Tom_L: morning
05:45 AM Tom_L: 50F
08:57 AM skunkworks: the level of excitement from the kids went to 11 this morning
09:24 AM Tom_L: do you qualify as a kid still?
09:44 AM * JT-Shop doesn't feel like working today...
09:50 AM JT-Shop: at least I found the ladder I've been searching for days
09:54 AM Tom_L: i got a paint brush shoved in my hand
09:57 AM JT-Shop: yuck
10:01 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: Me? no - but my 6 and 9yo are.. lol
10:04 AM cradek: wow I can't believe your kids are that old. you had one infant last time I saw you.
10:05 AM skunkworks: cradek: yes - they seem to keep growing...
10:05 AM cradek: it's nice to be around kids that age at christmas :-)
10:05 AM skunkworks: It is amazing.. :)
10:08 AM skunkworks: cradek: this will have to get me by.. https://photos.app.goo.gl/m3f3BAxTUFmKfHEV6
10:10 AM cradek: haha what on earth
10:10 AM skunkworks: Trying to find the channel running the christmas story...
10:10 AM cradek: is that a display on a screen?
10:10 AM skunkworks: yes.
10:10 AM cradek: haha it's cute
10:11 AM skunkworks: Right? there are a few people that created the faces.. So I guess I am not the only one that likes it.
10:12 AM skunkworks: Maybe after I get the actual accutron refirbished - it will be deligated to fancy dress..
10:12 AM cradek: it didn't stand up to your daily?
10:13 AM skunkworks: no - I am pretty rough on things.
10:16 AM skunkworks: cradek: https://photos.app.goo.gl/AWaS6hViY4bVu23C9
10:17 AM skunkworks: well loved...
10:19 AM Tom_L: skunkworks, christmas just gets more expensive the older they get
10:19 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: probably...
10:19 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: how old are yours?
10:19 AM Tom_L: 24 & just turned 21
10:20 AM Tom_L: at least they're both boys
10:21 AM skunkworks: I get to experience one of each...
10:21 AM Tom_L: yeah
10:21 AM * Tom_L wipes the paint off his nose and goes back to work
10:33 AM skunkworks: cradek: oh - and I have to send you dads too!
12:16 PM * JT-Shop just had a male cardinal fly into the machine shop door... sounded like someone threw a rock at the door
12:30 PM roycroft: it's funny how all the parcel couriers have been so slow and behind schedule for so long, but now they're all more than catching up today
12:31 PM roycroft: i had nothing scheduled to arrive today at all - everything was due next week or later, but usps have been here twice so far this morning, with more scheduled for later today, and ups are delivering early today for the first time in recent memory
12:32 PM roycroft: my first usps delivery arrived at 7:02 this morning
12:32 PM * roycroft was not even up and about to receive it, as he's not working today
12:32 PM _unreal_: sounds fishy to me
12:33 PM roycroft: i'm not going to complain - i have a four day weekend, and everything i need to finish my hot end upgrade should be here today
12:33 PM roycroft: i was not expecting it until next week some time, but it looks like i'll be able to do the upgrade this weekend
12:36 PM _unreal_: I have a week paid off
12:36 PM _unreal_: plus EOY bonus
12:38 PM roycroft: well today and monday are paid
12:39 PM _unreal_: during my off time I have a ton of stuff Im going to see if I cant get sold.
12:39 PM roycroft: this new filament is really nice
12:39 PM _unreal_: would be amazing if I can make a few K in the next week
12:39 PM _unreal_: ?
12:39 PM roycroft: extreme black
12:39 PM _unreal_: oh printing
12:39 PM roycroft: and it really is very black - no greyness at all
12:39 PM roycroft: yeah, the filament was that first parcel delivery this morning
12:40 PM roycroft: i'm printing the fan shrouds for my new hot end right now
12:40 PM roycroft: the fans will be arriving later today
12:40 PM roycroft: i got a volcano hot end, in hopes of doubling my print speed or better
12:58 PM _unreal_: my delta printer its blazing fast
12:58 PM _unreal_: print speed wise they run circles around the large prusa'
12:58 PM _unreal_: and the like
12:59 PM _unreal_: but smaller work area
01:00 PM roycroft: with this new hot end i should be able to use at least a 0.8mm nozzle
01:00 PM roycroft: that will really speed things up
02:13 PM roycroft: the standard shopgasm spam has stopped, finally
02:14 PM roycroft: today is gift card spam day
02:14 PM XXCoder: lol
02:15 PM roycroft: tomorrow should be relatively quiet
02:15 PM roycroft: sunday will be "didn't get what you want? you can get it now!" spam day
03:20 PM _unreal_: quiet.. hum people must be celebrating or something.
03:20 PM _unreal_: hehe
03:21 PM t4nk_freenode: or busy
03:22 PM t4nk_freenode: gave up on your f401's, _unreal_?
03:22 PM _unreal_: hardly
03:22 PM _unreal_: just have not done anything
03:22 PM _unreal_: lack of time
03:22 PM t4nk_freenode: hehe
03:23 PM _unreal_: as of today I have a week paid vaca
03:23 PM t4nk_freenode: you got this man, I know you do :b
03:23 PM * t4nk_freenode is wasting some copper clad in the mean time
03:24 PM _unreal_: would love any build help. mainly what I'm planning is to take one of these and build a custom PCB that is an arduino UNO foot print. by wiring. and just drop it into my laser etcher. the other 2 board I have are for test and finaly build/design.
03:25 PM _unreal_: what kind of PCB's are you building?
03:25 PM t4nk_freenode: 'by wiring' what does that mean?
03:25 PM t4nk_freenode: gott pee, brb
03:26 PM _unreal_: wiring meaning designing a PCB that just runs the traces to the headers that would make it be a working footprint match for an uno...
03:26 PM _unreal_: I only need one of these boards to be a GRBL setup. the other one's are going to be a simple interface adapter not a step driver.
03:28 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm gonna be something like that too I guess, when I finish up this mess of breadboards and leads
03:29 PM t4nk_freenode: I've decided to use an f411 black pill instead of my f407 board... so I can use that for some other stuff
03:29 PM t4nk_freenode: anyhow
03:29 PM _unreal_: I am planning to build a new cnc machine. at some point in time. to replace my home one. I love my home one. I have no plans to scrap it... I just need to have a machine that has a matched or better tooling area to my laser etcher
03:29 PM _unreal_: the boards I picked up are f401's
03:30 PM t4nk_freenode: for the moment I'm just trying to make a breakout board for a ssop28 footprint, just as a tester
03:30 PM _unreal_: more then enough for the needs
03:30 PM t4nk_freenode: more than, you say?
03:30 PM _unreal_: I'd suggest getting the pre-made one's on amazon
03:30 PM t4nk_freenode: no, nO, No, I don't do that man, that's the whole point
03:30 PM t4nk_freenode: I already got those btw
03:31 PM t4nk_freenode: for like... 10cts a piece?
03:31 PM _unreal_: I know its cheating but. its a bit cleaner to just drop the chip on and hot air flow it into place
03:31 PM _unreal_: BUILD everything else
03:31 PM t4nk_freenode: well, if you can't see my point... then you can't see my point.. but Iwant to do this myself
03:31 PM _unreal_: regardless you cant mill the really small trace TSSOP's.
03:31 PM t4nk_freenode: yes I can
03:32 PM _unreal_: ahh the gap is much smaller then a .5 bit
03:32 PM t4nk_freenode: smaller than, you say?
03:32 PM _unreal_: correct >:)
03:32 PM t4nk_freenode: but that's why I'm using .1mm v bits
03:32 PM t4nk_freenode: it works
03:32 PM t4nk_freenode: I do have a problem though
03:32 PM t4nk_freenode: not a nice one
03:33 PM _unreal_: :S I'm not a doctor I only use to be a nurse
03:33 PM _unreal_: and med tech
03:33 PM t4nk_freenode: bCNC will NOt... Not show me any probe data
03:33 PM t4nk_freenode: when I auto-level
03:33 PM _unreal_: that I can not answer sorry
03:33 PM t4nk_freenode: it's crazy.. it will get the margins right, and it will finish the probing routine
03:33 PM t4nk_freenode: but no data is displayed
03:34 PM t4nk_freenode: anyhow, I've just written my own app
03:34 PM _unreal_: does it operate with corrected movements after probing?
03:34 PM t4nk_freenode: and I'm probing myself now
03:34 PM _unreal_: O.O
03:34 PM _unreal_: TMI
03:34 PM t4nk_freenode: nope... heh... I've wasted a few pieces of copper clad on that; thinking it would correct, while it didn't
03:35 PM t4nk_freenode: it's been very close to being right a couple of times though
03:35 PM t4nk_freenode: lol, but without proper z corrections.. it will never ever come out right
03:36 PM _unreal_: yes it will I told you before
03:36 PM _unreal_: the best way to solve it is simple.
03:37 PM t4nk_freenode: tell me thAn, oh great master ;)
03:37 PM _unreal_: take some wood. PINE, MDF, CUTTING BOARD what ever
03:37 PM t4nk_freenode: enlighten me
03:37 PM _unreal_: mount it to your work bed in a way where you can always REMOUNT IT again and again the same location with screws
03:37 PM t4nk_freenode: and plane it you mean?
03:37 PM _unreal_: @%#$%Q#$% hot bowl. just made romen
03:37 PM _unreal_: si
03:37 PM t4nk_freenode: I did that with my first waste board
03:38 PM t4nk_freenode: not with the new one
03:38 PM _unreal_: AND...
03:38 PM t4nk_freenode: it will probably help a bit, but I think that probing will give the best results
03:38 PM _unreal_: you must mount the pcb USING dbl sided 1/8 ish 3mm foam tape
03:39 PM t4nk_freenode: especially since these are Damned fine traces
03:39 PM t4nk_freenode: no foam tape!
03:39 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm using carpet tape now
03:39 PM _unreal_: you can not use screws or hold downs on coper clad it will flex
03:39 PM t4nk_freenode: carpet tapes works wonders
03:40 PM _unreal_: what ever tape as long as it has a gap below the PCB so you can cut it out
03:40 PM t4nk_freenode: if I put too much tape on it... and leave it on too long... can't get it off.
03:40 PM _unreal_: then use a cutting board
03:40 PM _unreal_: also I use the pre-cut type
03:40 PM t4nk_freenode: I've mounted a second waste board on top of my 'good waste board'... because I don't wanna waste it ;)
03:40 PM _unreal_: little square/rectaingles sections
03:42 PM _unreal_: I use fishing line to remove the board
03:42 PM _unreal_: just pull it under. to cut the foam.
03:42 PM t4nk_freenode: some say a little bit of heat would also work
03:42 PM t4nk_freenode: but foam tape is probably not the best option to use
03:42 PM _unreal_: and then I use mineral spirits, or alcohol, or goo off to remove the the left over dlb sided tape goo
03:43 PM t4nk_freenode: I know it's handy to have that buffer by cutting into the foam
03:43 PM t4nk_freenode: but I guess for pcbs it is not a good idea
03:44 PM _unreal_: ?
03:44 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm dead tired, won't be longb4 I gotta get some sleep
03:45 PM _unreal_: using only dbl sided tape is not a good idea
03:46 PM t4nk_freenode: why not?
03:46 PM _unreal_: if it it wrinkles you will have a high spot
03:46 PM t4nk_freenode: well, just gotta keep my sausage-fingers in check then ;)
03:46 PM _unreal_: you also have to hand cut it normally unless you found some that is pre-cut into short bits
03:47 PM _unreal_: the pre-cut section dbl sided tape/foam gives you the cut gap.
03:47 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, well.. I cut it by hand.. and yeah, sometimes there's a little wrinkle, I throw them away
03:47 PM _unreal_: there is no more issue of hitting that tape/foam then there his hitting the tape of the non foam style dble sided tape
03:47 PM t4nk_freenode: But... probing should take care of that
03:48 PM _unreal_: and you dont have to worry about scoring the waste board with the cutting bit cutting the pcb.
03:48 PM _unreal_: you should not need to probe EVER other then depth
03:48 PM t4nk_freenode: other than, you say?
03:48 PM _unreal_: if... IF.... you produce a working PCB bed using cutting board with pre located mounting holes
03:48 PM _unreal_: so you can remove it and re-locate it if as needed
03:49 PM _unreal_: that has been FACE milled to make sure its just true flat to the working z depth of the machine
03:49 PM t4nk_freenode: no man, I don't believe in that one bit.. you cannot deliver precision without probing
03:50 PM _unreal_: if you use the dbl sided foam tape. as needed. if there are any deflections in the working surface. it wont matter because the PCB will follow the contour
03:50 PM t4nk_freenode: besides... even the unevenness in the pcb itself can ruin things!
03:50 PM _unreal_: then I must be GOD.. because my hand build machine has perfect traces following what I described.
03:51 PM t4nk_freenode: hand built?
03:51 PM _unreal_: yes my cnc machine is 100% hand built
03:51 PM t4nk_freenode: mine too, remember?
03:51 PM _unreal_: as is your. just I HAND HAND built mine
03:51 PM t4nk_freenode: :b
03:51 PM _unreal_: you cheated a bit with a 3d printer
03:52 PM t4nk_freenode: yeah, because it would be crooked like mad otherwise.
03:52 PM _unreal_: mine is straight.
04:04 PM roycroft: it is crazy time at the supermarkets
04:04 PM roycroft: i managed to survive my excursion, though
04:04 PM roycroft: and i'm done going places until sunday
04:04 PM XXCoder: good hunting roy?
04:05 PM roycroft: i got what i set out to get
04:05 PM roycroft: and i've no injuries to show for the experience
04:06 PM XXCoder: aww. scars make for good stories lol
04:07 PM roycroft: i'd rather have no scars than have stories
04:07 PM roycroft: i'm weird that way, i suppose
04:07 PM XXCoder: :)
04:09 PM roycroft: my fan shrouds finished printing right after i got home
04:09 PM roycroft: and ups were just leaving when i got home
04:09 PM roycroft: so i can see if the fans fit in the shrouds
04:10 PM roycroft: i'm not going to finish the hot end work today, though
04:10 PM roycroft: but i do want to see if the parts will fit
04:17 PM roycroft: and it appears they do fit, so that project is a go for sunday
04:20 PM XXCoder: nice
04:22 PM roycroft: yeah - i just hope they don't melt
04:22 PM roycroft: i printed them with pla, and petg or abs was recommended
04:23 PM roycroft: but i don't have any usable petg and i'm not set up for abs at the moment
04:24 PM roycroft: i should probably order a spool of petg from atomic filament
04:24 PM roycroft: i'm sure it will work fine, once i dial it in
04:32 PM _unreal_: roycroft, scary? LOL try going to the markets in my area
04:32 PM _unreal_: 300x the people
04:46 PM _unreal_: and t4nk_freenode disappears
04:49 PM t4nk_freenode: nope, I'm just busy
04:52 PM _unreal_: I'm pulling some parts from boards
04:52 PM _unreal_: PIC controllers
04:52 PM _unreal_: 18f's 16f's
04:52 PM _unreal_: they use them a lot in the sat.s
05:20 PM roycroft: we still have snow in the forecast tomorrow, and now the prediction is 3.3cm
05:20 PM roycroft: it was just over 1cm until today
05:20 PM robin__sz: so ... got the Rpi hooked up to a gigabit managed switch (not hub ...) so it can talk nicely to the Mesa card ... but as soon as I fire up LinuxCNC I lose my VNC connection
05:21 PM roycroft: there is even a slight chance of snow late tonight
05:22 PM roycroft: i don't know how you have things set up, but mesa cards expect to only talk to the host computer, and not be part of any other network
05:22 PM roycroft: if you're using the ethernet on your rpi to talk to the mesa card, you need to use wifi the rpi to talk to your netwokr
05:22 PM robin__sz: does it take over the ethernet connector completely?
05:22 PM roycroft: i believe it does
05:23 PM roycroft: mesanet are very clear that you should *only* make a direct connection from the host to the mesa card
05:23 PM roycroft: and not put it on your network
05:23 PM roycroft: if wifi is not an option, i believe you can get a second ethernet adapter for the rpi
05:24 PM roycroft: but sharing the network with the mesa card will not work
05:25 PM * roycroft is waiting for the third usps delivery of the day
05:28 PM JT-Shop: robin__sz, you need to setup the rpi wired connector for fixed address 10.10.10.12 or similar but not 10.10.10.10 because the Mesa card uses that
05:29 PM robin__sz: JT-Shop: I'm using 192.168.1.121 for the Mesa card, LinuxCNC can talk to it fine
05:30 PM robin__sz: but the VNC connection drops when I fire up the CNC
05:30 PM JT-Shop: yes but you will have issues if you connect up to your LAN
05:40 PM * roycroft gives jt-shop the rest of the year off
05:40 PM roycroft: just tell folks i said it was ok
05:40 PM JT-Shop: maybe the rest of the week!
05:41 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/recipes/chicken/cider-brine.html
05:41 PM JT-Shop: got a couple of cornish hens soaking in apple cider brine for tomorrow
05:42 PM JT-Shop: I'll prob feel better Sunday and weld out the Whirlpool assembly frame
05:48 PM robin__sz: we have nut roast for Christmas, with cashew nuts and a mushroom layer, served with a mushroom and sherry gravy
05:49 PM JT-Shop: yum except the mushrooms lol
05:50 PM JT-Shop: I wonder if my boss will notice if I take off the rest of the year?
05:54 PM * JT-Shop wonders if there is any Rémy Martin left... might be nice tonight
05:56 PM * roycroft got some lion's mane mushrooms for his pizza tonight
05:56 PM JT-Shop: not heard of them before
05:57 PM XXCoder: not surpised, theres zillions of mushroom species
05:58 PM JT-Shop: my other brother John was a mushroom guy, I'd take a photo and text him and he would say where is it or don't touch it
05:58 PM roycroft: they are very tasty
05:59 PM roycroft: they aer wite, and have long, vertical gills
05:59 PM roycroft: taste kind of like lobster
05:59 PM JT-Shop: wow
05:59 PM roycroft: they're expensive
05:59 PM roycroft: but it's christmas eve
06:00 PM roycroft: i deserve a fancy pizza tonight :)
06:00 PM robin__sz: in Scandinavia they eat a lot of foraged mushrooms
06:00 PM roycroft: i think that lion's mane are all wildcrafted
06:00 PM JT-Shop: you gotta splurge every now and then
06:00 PM robin__sz: everyone seems to "just know" or you can take them to any dispensary for a proper identification
06:00 PM robin__sz: over here its "never go near a mushroom you didn't buy"
06:01 PM * JT-Shop wanders inside for dinner
06:01 PM JT-Shop: see you guys tomorrow
06:01 PM XXCoder: later and merry xmas
06:01 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, don't stay up too late LOL
06:01 PM robin__sz: see ya, thanks for the help
06:01 PM robin__sz: merry xmas
06:01 PM roycroft: chantrelle, morel, and matsutake are the main wildcrafted culinary mushrooms around here
06:01 PM JT-Shop: merry christmas eve
06:01 PM roycroft: happy holidays
06:02 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: havent sleep late for a while now. 1-2 am. used to be 4-5 am everyday
06:03 PM JT-Shop: you still on the night shift for sleeping?
06:03 PM XXCoder: nah still no job
06:03 PM JT-Shop: that sucks
06:03 PM XXCoder: 1-2 am is my normal sleep habit
06:03 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:03 PM JT-Shop: I'm zonked out by 9pm usually lol
06:03 PM roycroft: i used to stay up late like that
06:04 PM roycroft: i'm in bed well before midnight most nights now
06:04 PM roycroft: i've lived on 5 hours or so of sleep most my life
06:04 PM roycroft: but i get 7-8 hours now
06:05 PM roycroft: i should have been sleeping that much throughout my life, but i didn't
06:05 PM roycroft: it took me close to 60 years to figure out that sleep is important
06:08 PM XXCoder: youre quite a bit older than I expected lol
06:08 PM roycroft: i predate the space age
06:09 PM XXCoder: cool :)
06:27 PM roycroft: it definitely feels like it's going to snow
06:31 PM flyback- is now known as flyback
06:33 PM Bleepshop: roycroft! Take it back, take it back. Just because I remembered the weather in Eugene does not mean I wanted to experience it again... LMAO
06:33 PM roycroft: well when it snows it does not snow much
06:33 PM XXCoder: looks like might have actual snow on sunday for me
06:33 PM roycroft: i'm sure you remember that
06:34 PM roycroft: but more memorable is how inept eugenians are at dealing with snow
06:34 PM roycroft: just the chance of snow and everything shuts down
06:34 PM Bleepshop: 38F, 110% humidity due to a mix of low flying clouds down to ground fog plus rain.
06:35 PM roycroft: and when it is snowy and slick, people still drive too fast and follow too close
06:35 PM roycroft: and start crashing into things and each other
06:36 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Yeah Albuquerque is hte same way. It snowed, everybody else is scared shitless and I'm out having a blast on an old enduro. LOL
06:36 PM roycroft: when i lived in chicago, the only time the schools ever closed was in the great blizzard of '67
06:36 PM roycroft: when we had snow drifts in our yard up to our roof
06:36 PM roycroft: that was the first time o'hare airport ever closed
06:37 PM roycroft: in fairness, it's a lot flatter there
06:37 PM roycroft: it really is treacherous driving in the snow in the mountains
06:37 PM roycroft: but here in the valley it's not a big deal
06:38 PM Bleepshop: 4" of snow and the town shut down till they ran plows. I went to 7-11, stopped for pizza, went to the thrift store. I was the only customer some of them saw for hours.
06:39 PM Bleepshop: You know things are shut down when the pizza place is giving away free pies they couldn't deliver to keep them from getting trashed.
06:54 PM * roycroft makes pizza at home these days, for the most part
06:54 PM Tom_itx: christmas and 74f
06:54 PM Tom_itx: currently 70
06:55 PM roycroft: tripcheck.com
06:55 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
06:55 PM roycroft: check out the pass cams
06:55 PM roycroft: it's delightfully wintery in the mountains!
06:56 PM roycroft: it's not snowing in oakridge yet, though
06:58 PM roycroft: but tomorrow is when it's really supposed to start
07:29 PM _unreal_: there my parts gathering is complete
07:36 PM t4nk_freenode: so your al set too go than
07:36 PM _unreal_: no.. just gathering good chips
07:36 PM t4nk_freenode: I'm done for the day
07:36 PM _unreal_: and trashing the left overs
07:37 PM _unreal_: got some nice pic chips
07:37 PM _unreal_: all ssop's
07:38 PM t4nk_freenode: I guess I have my own gcode sender now
07:39 PM t4nk_freenode: tried a 15degree .1mm bit.. snapped pretty soon
09:40 PM Bleepshop: OK. That was mildly scary... Tested the new Vfd and spindle for the first time. All went well. Unplugged it to start tidying the wiring and got to watch the VFD run for 5-6 seconds after I pulled the plug. LOL
09:40 PM Bleepshop: And it's quiet! So I won't be for a second... WOOHOO!
09:41 PM XXCoder: lol well congats
09:44 PM skunkworks: Bleepshop: VFD's have a lot of filtering caps.. They will run a bit when the power is removed
09:45 PM Bleepshop: Still need to double check all the settings in the VFD and make a blankout for what used to be a duplex outlet on the gantry. The original router plugged into it and I'll plug it with a new plate with a hole for a G20-4 socket.
09:45 PM Bleepshop: And it's quiet! WOOHOO! LOL
09:46 PM Tom_itx: yes, mine takes a while to shut off as well
09:47 PM * Bleepshop could still hear the video player at normal volume over the spindle running. Before this the neighbors would have heard the router.
09:47 PM Tom_itx: stuff a tool in the end and rub it up against some metal and it won't be near as quiet
09:48 PM XXCoder: I guess it'd be LOT louder with corncob endmill
09:48 PM Bleepshop: Tom_itx: I'll probably stuff a spoilboard bit in it and try surfacing some MDF to see if it's on the Z squarely.
09:48 PM Tom_itx: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Carbide_rougher3.jpg
09:49 PM Tom_itx: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Carbide_rougher4.jpg
09:49 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
09:50 PM Bleepshop: Is $100 for a Delta dust collector a decent deal if it runs with no bearing noise?
09:51 PM Tom_L: what size?
09:51 PM Bleepshop: AP-400 IIRC.
09:51 PM Tom_L: i don't cut much wood so i don't need one
09:52 PM Bleepshop: 4" hose was what I cared about. I'm thinking about faking a vacuum table off of it as well.
09:53 PM Bleepshop: Run the 4" up to the underside of the plate and split a 2" off of it for the dust shoe.
09:54 PM Tom_L: shared vacuum with the table & shoe?
09:54 PM Tom_L: not a good idea
09:56 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: I was looking at using an intermediate vacuum tank so that that it can deal with clog/clear/clog situations.
09:57 PM Tom_L: does it draw enough vacuum to be used as a part fixture?
09:58 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: That's what I want to find out. I figured worst case I'd stick with clamps and have good dust collection. LOL
09:59 PM XXCoder: id also add cyclone dust seperator
09:59 PM XXCoder: prolong your filter life by a lot
10:00 PM Bleepshop: I've got a pair of 30 gallon seperators plumbed for 2-1/2" shopvac hookups already. I can get another one if I need to for $25 and add the 4" fittings.
10:01 PM XXCoder: nice
10:02 PM Bleepshop: Yeah, I've got a place local where I can get these. http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/images/products/Buckets/sku/400/56184psku.jpg
10:02 PM XXCoder: nice
10:02 PM Tom_L: i used to get empty soap drums from local laundry supply
10:03 PM Tom_L: make good trashcans etc
10:03 PM Bleepshop: I used one a couple of weeks ago to vacuum all the dirt out of the hole for the new utility pole outside. It was a lot easier than trying to lift dust with a posthole digger. LOL
10:04 PM Tom_L: i just borrowed my neighbor and his 12" concrete drill
10:05 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/patio/patio5.jpg
10:05 PM XXCoder: Bleepshop: I always wanted to try this but never did https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1447214
10:06 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: I'm using 40 gallon bags with these and I added the shell from an old musical drum slightly smaller than the barrel and ~12 tall to the underside of the lids. I can vacuum with a bag in the can and not worry about it crawling up the outlet.
10:14 PM Bleepshop: The only mod I've done to the barrel itself is to add a strap handle to the side of it on the bulge where I can grab it and the molded in handle to empty them.
10:14 PM Bleepshop: http://store.rammfence.com/Images/DLH_1.jpg
10:16 PM Bleepshop: I might be convincing the boss buy an old trash truck to convert into a dust collector for work. That way it could be driven elsewhere and dumped on a regular basis.
10:16 PM XXCoder: big wood shop eh
10:17 PM Bleepshop: We could fill a 10 cu/yd rolloff in a day.
10:19 PM Bleepshop: The sawmill, resaw, cabinet saws, molders sanders and the CNC all spit sawdust out like it grows on trees... LOL
10:22 PM Bleepshop: I think I blew the bosses mind on Thursday when I told him "Merry Christmas. Head #3 on the resaw is re-squared and the parts to put it back online will be here on Tuesday." Damn thing has been offline for > 5 years because nobody would stop and figure out how to re-align it.
10:23 PM XXCoder: you work as maintance/repair right?
10:26 PM Bleepshop: And CNC operator, designer and probably going to be working via Zoom and an interpreter with the site in Mexico to fix a couple of issues there since I told them "There's no way in hell I'm getting on an airplane." LOL
10:32 PM Tom_L: many flights have been cancelled for the holidays
10:36 PM Bleepshop: Doesn't matter if it's canceled or not... You're not getting me on any damned airplane... LOL
10:38 PM Tom_L: yeah i think i'll keep my feet planted where they are for a good while
10:40 PM Bleepshop: I'd consider a 1200lb X class [experimental] but it'd be my design and I'd be supervising construction.
10:50 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: You still functional? I'm reading through this to setup the VFD and wonder if there's anything obvious they've missed. https://www.cnczone.com/forums/spindles-vfd/326310-posts.html
10:51 PM XXCoder: Bleepshop: thats cool
10:51 PM XXCoder: im still pondering on what career I can do when I only can drive sometimes
11:01 PM roycroft: bleepshop: the first post in that thread looks correct and complete
11:02 PM roycroft: the rest of that thread is horrible and painful to read
11:02 PM roycroft: i should not have bothered seeing what else folks had to say
11:05 PM roycroft: my new vfd arrived today, btw
11:05 PM roycroft: i should probably test it and the spindle this weekend
11:24 PM Bleepshop: I'm guessing that the bit in the pica typeface Chinglish manual that came with it about not using a relay/contactor on the power feed is to not start/stop the spindle that way.
11:25 PM roycroft: do not put anything in between the vfd and the motor
11:26 PM roycroft: and do not operate the vfd unless you're certain all three phase wires are connected between the vfd and the motor
11:26 PM Bleepshop: R/S/T not W/U/V.
11:26 PM roycroft: unless you're a fan of blue smoke
11:27 PM Bleepshop: I'm guessing it should be OK using one to control the main 220V rails for the machine which power the VFD.
11:27 PM roycroft: iirc if you're feeding it single phase you can only use r and s for the inputs
11:27 PM roycroft: even though it says you can use r and t
11:27 PM roycroft: but it won't damage anything to use the wrong input terminals
11:27 PM roycroft: it just won't work until you wire it correctly
11:29 PM Bleepshop: I'm on S / T and it fired up. I need to swap 2 of the W/U/V lines and reverse the spindle roation though.
11:29 PM roycroft: maybe s/t works and r/s works but r/t does not
11:29 PM roycroft: or maybe i'm wrong
11:30 PM roycroft: i use a magenetic switch in front of my vfds, although i have them programmed not to resume the spindle after a power outage
11:34 PM Bleepshop: I've got a Moeller DIL EM-01 with a 220V coil and 4 contactor sets I want to use to power the VFD and the spindle coolant pump. http://www.dometekshop.com/image/cache/data/Cheri/Cheri%20034/100_8508-800x800.jpg
11:35 PM Bleepshop: .Still need to figure out if I can get the VFD to control the pump and wait for the "System Full" signal before starting the spindle.
11:50 PM roycroft: there are some relay contacts on the vfd that may be useful for that
11:51 PM roycroft: but it might be best to use external logic for it
11:51 PM roycroft: that's something an arduino should be able to do trivially
