12:10 AM Bleepshop: Well, you know how it is. You say you've been up on a table sweating over your drag chain and you know a Ru-Paul fan's ears are gonna perk up... LOL
12:18 AM Bleepshop: Severe disappointment was displayed when I explained it was part of the CNC and had nothing to do with crossdressing.
12:20 AM Bleepshop: And no woder I'm all hot and sweaty. The woodstove has the temp in here up to 79F at the door and it's 32F on the other side of it.
12:37 AM roycroft: it's 5 degrees here
12:37 AM roycroft: we had a bit of sleet today, but mostly just a *lot* of rain
12:37 AM roycroft: we've only had a couple days below freezing so far this winter
01:20 AM Deejay: moin
01:51 AM Bleepshop: roycroft: I was enjoying the fact that it was literally 2x the temperature this morning than it was yesterday morning. 19F yesterday, 38F today. LOL
01:52 AM XXCoder: lol 38f is typical winter temperate for here
02:22 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:14 AM randy: morning
05:31 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:15 AM Tom_L: morning
08:48 AM * JT-MachineShop plays hooky today
10:14 AM roycroft: a mystery package is arriving for me from amazon.com today
10:14 AM roycroft: this should be interesting
10:32 AM Bleepshop: roycroft: Is it your package from Columbia or the one from Fredrick's of Hollywood ? ;D
10:33 AM * Bleepshop wonders how many people remember that Robin Williams bit...
10:35 AM roycroft: memphis tennessee
10:35 AM roycroft: i have absolutely no idea what it might be
10:35 AM roycroft: i don't remember getting drunk lately, but i decided to check and see if i did any drunk ordering, which my order history indicates i did not
10:36 AM roycroft: as well, i checked on ebay to see if i did any drunk ebay ordering, as i've had ebay purchases fulfilled by amazon in the past
10:36 AM roycroft: again, no outstanding orders
10:43 AM unterhausen: apparently there is some scam that involves sending merch to people from Amazon.
10:43 AM unterhausen: I'm not sure how they make money
10:44 AM unterhausen: it's not all junk either
10:52 AM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Amana-Tool-Spoilboard-Surfacing-Flycutting/dp/B077HWY1DS
10:52 AM roycroft: does anyone use that cutter?
10:52 AM roycroft: it looks like it's pretty decent, but it's rather pricey
10:54 AM roycroft: the inserts cost $30 each, though
10:58 AM Bleepshop: roycroft: I'm using one of these as a clearing/surfacing bit and I'm happy as hell with it. https://www.amazon.com/CNC-Router-Bit-Wood-NITOMAK/dp/B07VCZVKL7
11:01 AM Bleepshop: roycroft: And if you want to do some blind-drunk ordering I can send you my Amazon list. ;D
11:02 AM Bleepshop: I think except for the servo drives I was looking at everything expensive has been ordered.
11:13 AM roycroft: that's pretty cheap
11:13 AM roycroft: even though it's not an insert cutter, it's so cheap it's probably more cost effective
11:14 AM roycroft: i think it's worth trying the $20 one before springing for the $150 one
11:14 AM roycroft: especially considering the whole tool costs less than a single insert
11:38 AM Loetmichel: oh maaan. Is the world only made of weaklings these days? just watched a hacksmith video where they make a 75lb mjölnir... and then struggle to lift it with both hands onto a scale. i can use that thing to hammer in stuff onehanded, not to mention lift it on a scale. Is the youth these days really that weak?
11:40 AM aaroncnc: Loetmichel, that would be maxing out what i can lift. I use tools to lift heavy things. My back would not be happy if i tried to lift that more than once.
11:41 AM aaroncnc: then again my back is not happy most of the time...
11:41 AM Loetmichel: i assumed as much, aaroncnc
11:41 AM Loetmichel: but visibly struggling to lift a 75lb hammer with both hands? nah.
11:45 AM aaroncnc: Loetmichel, with a verticle stick handle i would have a hard time with it. Now if it was say 2 separate items each with a horizontal handle i could life it fine
11:48 AM roycroft: i can lift 75 lbs with both hands
11:49 AM roycroft: i'm not sure it would be a struggle
11:49 AM roycroft: wielding a 75lb hammer would definitely be a struggle, though
11:51 AM Loetmichel: wielding it onehanded may be a bit rough indeed. but just lifting it onto a scale should be easy. IMHO
11:51 AM Loetmichel: onehanded i mean
11:53 AM roycroft: i could probably lift 75lbs with one hand if it's just a lift and place
11:53 AM roycroft: as long as it's not a prolonged lift
11:53 AM aaroncnc: i can wield an 8 pound spitting maul and chop wood but if you gave me a 75 pound one i would not even be sure if i could lift it above my head for a swing.
11:59 AM Loetmichel: but i can tell you that its VERY satisfying to tear down a few 10 feet of brick wall with a 45lb sledge by hand.
11:59 AM Loetmichel: nice "excertion high" afterwards :)
12:00 PM Loetmichel: (also a very good way to get rid of "angry")
12:00 PM roguish[m]: all you guys bragging again......
12:01 PM Loetmichel: (and no, i am not a 6'5" mountain, just an average guy with a beer belly.)
12:01 PM Loetmichel: roguish[m]: nah. not really. just surprised how the "standards" are going down
12:02 PM aaroncnc: Loetmichel, more like the need for everyone to be able to throw a contain of shingles onto a 10ft roof is not needed. We have been building tools to offset the need for psychical work.
12:03 PM aaroncnc: its the future more automation more tools less = less physical work overall. it will never be gone but less.
12:03 PM Loetmichel: aaroncnc: i keep forgetting that US buildings are "stick frame and sheetrock"
12:04 PM Loetmichel: german buildings are usually massive brick or concrete walls.
12:04 PM Loetmichel: at least the outer ones
12:04 PM aaroncnc: Also people have gotten very "large" in the not so good way. But i am on the opposite end of that, 75 pounds is about half my body weight.
12:06 PM Loetmichel: well, i am down to 106kg/230lb atm. (from 120kg/260lb) but a decade of construction work and a decade of stage service after that leave some "brawn" to say the least.
12:06 PM aaroncnc: Loetmichel, we have cmu built home here too its just not very popular. Heck i have seen several new homes where they build all the walls offsite and just stand the thing up in a day.
12:06 PM Loetmichel: whats CMU?
12:07 PM aaroncnc: concrete masonry unit
12:07 PM Loetmichel: ah
12:09 PM aaroncnc: seems construiction here is stating to move towards the walls being built in factory's by precision cutting machines then assembled on a automated jig table. Then they just load the ting onto a flatbed and drive it to the site. with the help of a crane the house is stood up in a single 8 hour work day. The outside frame that is.
12:10 PM aaroncnc: And i cant seem to type worth a damn this morning......
12:12 PM Loetmichel: hehe, over here its more an more aerated concrete megablocks for the walls and prefab ceilings laid on top, then rebar in, and then concrete pour
12:12 PM Loetmichel: usually about a week or two to raise a 1-2family home
12:13 PM Loetmichel: and either stickframe drywall inner walls or massive 8cm plaster walls.
12:25 PM roycroft: we use a variety of construction methods here in the us, but we certainly have an abundance of timber
12:27 PM roguish[m]: and we're pretty old fashioned....
12:30 PM aaroncnc: if i had the money to build a new house i would love to build a ICF house.
12:30 PM roguish[m]: ICF ????
12:31 PM aaroncnc: insulated concrete forms
12:33 PM aaroncnc: they are neat and as the name says are insulated. makes for a strong house that can be very energy efficient.
12:35 PM roguish[m]: ah, i'm familiar
01:15 PM FinboySlick: aaroncnc: I buit my basement with Nudura, they're fairly nice but don't let the salesman tell you it's just lego blocks and you can do everything yourself.
01:15 PM FinboySlick: You definitely want someone who's done it before helping you out.
01:16 PM aaroncnc: yea, i have heard stories of people not doing it right and having a blowout of cement go everywhere.
01:17 PM FinboySlick: That's the more obvious problem. But they move a lot during pour too and you can't 'pull' on them so you have to setup your alignment with that in mind.
01:18 PM FinboySlick: My big mistake was not levelling the top properly, which meant a fair bit of grinding work before I could sit the house on it.
01:18 PM FinboySlick: I imagine most contractors would just shim and not bother with it but I wanted it done right.
01:19 PM FinboySlick: Insulated the slab too. That basement is pretty much a thermos now.
01:19 PM aaroncnc: sadly i dont think i will be in a position to build new. But i do hate my 1950s house so much.
01:20 PM FinboySlick: Heh, I'm still not done building, it'S been 3 years.
01:20 PM aaroncnc: Yea i have dreamed of having a basement with an insulated slab with radiant heating in all the floors.
01:20 PM FinboySlick: Almost there though
01:20 PM aaroncnc: Same for my shop i hate the cold cement when im trying to work
01:20 PM FinboySlick: I'm not bothering with radiant heating personally. The house is way too well insulated for that to make much of a difference.
01:21 PM FinboySlick: I'm around R42 all around.
01:21 PM aaroncnc: I just like the idea of radiant heat then having mini spilts for AC in each major section of a home. im not the biggest fan of central hvac.
01:21 PM FinboySlick: I heat the whole (unfinished) house with a 1500W 120v heater right now.
01:21 PM FinboySlick: Too much dust? That's what I'm going for.
01:22 PM FinboySlick: But again, very small scale/flow, the house just doesn't need much heating/cooling.
01:23 PM aaroncnc: lets see my 1950 home has zero wall insulation. had r-10 or so in the ceilings but i upgraded that to r-48 oh and there is no sillplate between the house and the basement.
01:23 PM aaroncnc: I would love a home i could heat with a small heater.
01:24 PM FinboySlick: Yeah, my current (old) house is testing out at 11 full air changes an hour. It's a sieve.
01:24 PM FinboySlick: Same situation as you, which is why I built.
01:24 PM FinboySlick: But I really did bite off way more than I can chew. It's been quite an ordeal.
01:24 PM aaroncnc: I built my office in the basement as a room in a room with solid foam insulation. So i can keep it 80deg all day for almost nothing but its the only place in my house i am comfortable in during the winter.
01:26 PM FinboySlick: Heatpump was a godsend a few years back.
01:26 PM aaroncnc: I would love to be able to take my time and build a new home like that.
01:27 PM aaroncnc: I would love to have a geo-thermal system for both AC and heat. but the cost to drill the wells is crazy.
01:27 PM FinboySlick: Mitsubishi compressors perform pretty well up to -25C. The heat reminds me of the old oil furnance.
01:27 PM FinboySlick: Oh mine is a cheap 18000btu dual-head thing.
01:27 PM FinboySlick: No geothermal or anything fancy.
01:28 PM FinboySlick: Just a compressor outside and a couple copper tubing to each head.
01:28 PM FinboySlick: Was under $2k
01:29 PM aaroncnc: i just think the cost for me and my area that would cost way more than nat gas to run.
01:29 PM FinboySlick: Oh? Elecicity is cheap here so that's what we heat with typically. Heat pump just cut that bill by about 66%
01:30 PM FinboySlick: But I wouldn't know how it compares to nat gas.
01:35 PM FinboySlick: Ironically, I decided to build when I got my CNC mill so I would have a basement shop on stable floor. So it's all you guy's fault!
01:37 PM aaroncnc: i pay about 0.18$ per kw and about $1.48 per 100cubic feet of gas so about 2,438 for gas and if i did a newer heat pump it would be 2,934$
02:10 PM unterhausen: I have to go see if I can remember how to true up my lathe chuck
02:14 PM unterhausen: tubelcain has a video, "don't even think of buying one of these brand new, they are incredibly expensive. Probably $500"
02:14 PM unterhausen: I wish I could buy one for $500
02:22 PM unterhausen: the current version of my chuck costs $1800
02:30 PM roycroft: i bet if you had a 75lb hammer you could whack it true
03:24 PM miss0r: my god. I must've bought the cheapest most chinesium grade relay I could find. This relay is rated for 12vdc on the coil. It was supplied 12.6 volts(from a battery) and after 2 minuts of continous coil drive(It was on, thats it) the coil melted and the relay stopped working. If that ain't impressive, I don't know what is
03:25 PM aaroncnc: ouch, maybe they goofed and it was a 5v coil?
03:31 PM XXCoder: it only accept chineseium volts. which is 8v in real units
03:31 PM XXCoder: or maybe 5v
03:32 PM miss0r: yeah hehe I don't know. My appliance just powered off.. and I got that heartsinking feeling that comes with the smell of burning electronics and not knowing what makes it. So I moved fast disconnecting the power :)
03:32 PM aaroncnc: i am glad i am not ordering hardware and things right now. the cost went up and the quality way down.
03:32 PM miss0r: Then I was that the relay was completely bloated & hot
03:33 PM aaroncnc: Also the amount of fake SSR is crazy.
03:34 PM aaroncnc: i have a bin of them that say 25A but when i took one apart and chipped away the pot compound i found they are 10A rated if the chip they used is to be trusted...
03:34 PM miss0r: *sigh*
03:35 PM miss0r: aaroncnc: I'm having issues sourcing proper components at the moment too (other than the obvious relay mentioned above)
03:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: aaroncnc: 10A anywhere else is 25 Chinese Amps
03:36 PM aaroncnc: yea, i wish digikey and mcmaster were a bit cheaper but at least i have yet to get a fake from them.
03:36 PM miss0r: The thing is, I bought that relay from rs components - not exactly a cheap supplyer
03:36 PM aaroncnc: on the plus side i got a settlement check for a good bit of money a few years back on resistor price fixing case so that was nice.
03:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what did they do wrong to get caught?
03:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: overcharge the wrong customers?
03:40 PM XXCoder: nice
03:40 PM aaroncnc: not sure i got the paper work in the mail years ago saying i was eligible so i filled out the form and then another year later got a check.
03:40 PM aaroncnc: think it was this lawsuit https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/closed-settlements/linear-resistors-price-fixing-class-action-settlement/#:~:text=A%20class%20action%20lawsuit%20against,way%20that%20increased%20their%20profits.
03:44 PM XXCoder: https://twitter.com/pickover/status/1470410586785730560
03:44 PM XXCoder: wow
03:44 PM XXCoder: donut gear
03:44 PM aaroncnc: it looks so wrong.
03:44 PM solarwind: CaptHindsight[m] oh man #electronics can be painful sometimes
03:45 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, it's how krisyp kreme makes theirs
03:45 PM XXCoder: lol
03:56 PM unterhausen: I got a foam gun and apparently the threads were cut wrong so it just emptied the foam can right away
03:56 PM unterhausen: I left a bad review, not only was it $35 down the drain, but that foam got everywhere, couldn't stop it
03:57 PM unterhausen: I'm not sure why I feel bad about returning it
03:58 PM aaroncnc: ouch that sucks. i had a can get punctured via a recip saw once worst clean up job ever. not to mention i had to rip off so much arm hair...
03:58 PM aaroncnc: all my cloths went into the bin. including my shoes.
03:58 PM unterhausen: fortunately it was the window stuff
03:59 PM unterhausen: I have punctured cans of the normal stuff inside a trash can and they filled it, even though I thought the can was empty
04:04 PM unterhausen: amazon wants me to return in the original packing, which got covered in foam
04:06 PM roycroft: so do what they want
04:06 PM roycroft: and tell the ups driver that amazon ordered you to give them the funky, foamy box
04:07 PM Tom_L: too bad there wasn't a 2nd can you could rig to go off when they open the box
04:08 PM aaroncnc: Tom_L, thats not nice most returns never go back to the sender, they get put on a pallet of bulk returns then get sold in bulk
04:09 PM roycroft: yeah, amazon returns go the local ups store, and then to a random warehouse that is not amazon
04:09 PM Tom_L: so 2 wrongs don't make a right?
04:10 PM aaroncnc: i know people who buy returned tvs from them after super bowl. so many people buy a tv then return it after the super bowl. so you can buy en entire palet of working tvs for cheap.
04:10 PM roycroft: it's the reason you don't even need to package most returns now - the ups store just take the return, scan it into the system, then toss it in a big box
04:10 PM roycroft: when the box is full they ship it off to the random warehouse
04:10 PM aaroncnc: Tom_L, 3 lefts make a right....
04:11 PM * roycroft gets hung up on that golden rule thing
04:53 PM unterhausen: it was in a bubble pack and I'm returning it unpackaged to the hub locker
04:55 PM unterhausen: thing was, i bought another same brand gun and it works fine. I just wanted to be able to do window and normal foam at the same time
04:57 PM roycroft: iirc window foam expands a lot more than regular foam if it can, but isn't really high pressure, so it doesn't tend to warp/crack things when expanding
04:59 PM unterhausen: yeah, that's why I want to use it. I'm spraying it in between some framing that might move with the regular
05:00 PM unterhausen: window is better glue than regular too, I used it to hold up foam insulation in the basement before I put up the walls
05:01 PM unterhausen: I need to take the chuck apart, the out of center would move when I adjusted the other direction
07:09 PM roycroft: i finally finished wiring up my bandsaw
07:09 PM roycroft: everything works as planned, no blue smoke or sparks made an escape from the machine, or even tried to
07:10 PM roycroft: but i still haven't gone back and given retrieving my wrench another go
07:48 PM roycroft: we are forecast to get some snow in the south hills tonight, but it's already down to 3 degrees at my house
07:48 PM roycroft: i wonder if the snow will reach the valley floor
07:49 PM roycroft: yeah, the latest forecast calls for a low of -2, so there's a good chance i'll see snow at my house
07:49 PM Tom_L: it _is_ that time of year
07:49 PM Tom_L: been rather mild here
07:57 PM roycroft: here as well
07:57 PM roycroft: it's almost mid winter already and we've only had a couple days below freezing so far
07:57 PM roycroft: but it is feeling rather wintery right now
08:02 PM aaroncnc: I love that it has not snowed much here. I am holding off on putting on my snow tires.
08:03 PM XXCoder: I love how north I live, and barely get snow at all
08:04 PM aaroncnc: how far north?
08:04 PM XXCoder: as north as tacoma lol
08:05 PM aaroncnc: thats very north.
08:05 PM XXCoder: yup but west enough to be in low snow area. pity east washington lol
08:05 PM roycroft: it's more the olympic rain shadow that keeps the snow donw
08:06 PM XXCoder: on the flip side, smoke stays inside
08:07 PM roycroft: at least you don't have the big weyerhauser stink tube announcing one's arrival in tacoma miles ahead of time any more
08:07 PM roycroft: back in the '80s that was horrible
08:07 PM jdh: I think we have had one day sub-freezing
08:07 PM XXCoder: lol
08:09 PM roycroft: i remember riding home from souther oregon in the middle of the night once where i had passed out hours earlier, and when we got near tacoma the stench woke me up and knew exactly where we were
08:10 PM firephoto__ is now known as firephoto_
08:10 PM Tom_L: paper mill?
08:11 PM roycroft: yes
08:11 PM roycroft: they put scrubbers on the smokestacks about 25 or 30 years ago
08:11 PM roycroft: and it's not so bad any moer
08:11 PM roycroft: but it used to be horrible
08:11 PM roycroft: tacoma was called "the armpit of the northwest"
08:12 PM aaroncnc: then there is Gary the armpit of the midwest...
08:12 PM roycroft: at least by non-tacomans
08:12 PM roycroft: i used to live in gary indiana
08:12 PM aaroncnc: i am sorry for you
08:12 PM roycroft: back when i was a wee lad
08:13 PM roycroft: a wee wee lad
08:13 PM roycroft: we moved from gary when i was 3
08:13 PM XXCoder: tacoma is still crime city #1 for wa.
08:13 PM aaroncnc: only up from there.
08:13 PM XXCoder: yay, us
08:13 PM roycroft: the jacksons are from gary
08:14 PM roycroft: it wasn't that bad a place when i lived there, from what i'm told
08:14 PM roycroft: i really have no memory of having lived there
08:14 PM XXCoder: it was far worse in 90s
08:14 PM XXCoder: quite high crime
08:14 PM XXCoder: lots gangs
08:15 PM XXCoder: still hgave some of that issue here, but far less
08:15 PM aaroncnc: i had to go by it every week for work and a few times into it.
08:15 PM roycroft: yeah, tacoma is kind of a rough place
08:18 PM roycroft: the post has arrived
08:18 PM roycroft: i should go find out what my mystery package contains
08:18 PM aaroncnc: speaking of mystery package i just found out i shipped a package to a old house i used to live at...
08:19 PM aaroncnc: Thats going to be an awkward conversation.
08:20 PM roycroft: this is why you need to step back when you're drunk ordering sex toys
08:21 PM aaroncnc: i wish it was a sexy toy.
08:21 PM aaroncnc: i wish i could say i was drunk...
08:21 PM roycroft: anyway, the mystery package is more of a mystery now
08:21 PM aaroncnc: oh?
08:21 PM roycroft: because it was not i my mailbox, although the other packages were
08:21 PM roycroft: and the status is still listed as "out for delivery"
08:22 PM roycroft: but it is from amazon, and i've noticed that the usps seem to have special amazon delivery trucks around here
08:22 PM roycroft: so it may still arrive tonight
08:23 PM roycroft: my new hot end for my 3d printer did arrive
08:23 PM aaroncnc: what extruder?
08:24 PM roycroft: it's an e3d volcano, with both a 0.6mm and 0.8mm nozzle
08:25 PM roycroft: i need to do some high speed printing
08:25 PM aaroncnc: i am waiting for the revo, it looke nice.
08:25 PM firephoto__ is now known as firephoto_
08:30 PM roycroft: i hope this is as big of an improvement as i need it to be
08:30 PM roycroft: i'd like to at least double my printing speed
08:31 PM roycroft: it's two plastic bags full of parts, with no instructions or other documentation of any kind
08:31 PM roycroft: but it's not hard to figure out what to do with the stuff
08:42 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Maybe it's an intelligence test? ;D
08:45 PM * Bleepshop has finished stringing 15M+ of tubing through the drag-chain and needs some 6mm and 8mm bulkhead fittings to make it pretty.
08:50 PM roycroft: it's all assembled now
08:51 PM roycroft: i'm waiting for the mounting bracket to arrive, which is not the mystery package
08:52 PM roycroft: i should probably make dinner while i'm waiting, as the bracket will probably not arrive for several days
08:52 PM roycroft: bated breath does not a stomach fill
08:54 PM Tom_L: it's probably chasing your motor mount around the globe
08:54 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: I was about to ask if maybe your mystery package was a blonde, a brunette and a six-pack of redheads and then I remembered that Moonlight Bunny Ranch doesn't do take-out. ;D
09:34 PM Bleepshop: LMAO! A piece of the outer braid from one of these with some marine grade [glue inside] heat shrink as an end cap makes a great wire/tubing cover.
09:34 PM Bleepshop: https://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Hose-Original-Silver-BulbHead/dp/B07JCJFJFY
09:39 PM Bleepshop: I used a piece to re-cover the stinger lead on my 20+ year old Hazard Fraught MIG a while back, I'm covering the tubing for the air/water/drain on the CNC with it and I've still got good sized chunk left over.
09:51 PM roycroft: that marine shrink tubing is awesome stuff
09:51 PM roycroft: i have used it many times and it has never failed me
09:52 PM roycroft: the only problem with it is that sometimes it's difficult to slip it on the wire because of the stickiness
09:52 PM roycroft: but i've always made it work in the end
10:38 PM solarwind: I've found that "bronze" brazing rods are great for rebuilding threads on small parts that you can't otherwise TIG weld to add material
10:38 PM solarwind: How about for aluminum? For example, flashlight tailcap threads
10:39 PM solarwind: Well a small oxy acetylene torch works well for steel. I've never done this for aluminum though
10:48 PM solarwind: Ah, found a decent aluminum brazing filler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy1dNqXfUws
11:07 PM roycroft: well, the mystery parcel was due to be delivered by 8:30
11:07 PM roycroft: it is now 8:52
11:07 PM roycroft: i'm wondering if it was a box of ether
