12:21 AM roycroft: and the black friday spam is rolling in
12:30 AM roycroft: unfortunately for all those vendors, tomorrow is no spend friday for me
12:30 AM roycroft: it's been my tradition for years to not spend a single penny on the day after thanksgiving
01:04 AM randy: morning
01:53 AM Loetmichel: mornin'
01:56 AM randy: snow, snow, snow. finally. \o/
01:56 AM Loetmichel: *snicker* Wife just saw me leaving for work. "Michel, i am freezing just looking at you!" $me:"Well, its only +1.5°C outside according to the thermometer. Not like its below zero. And i am wearing full length cargo pants to my tshirt, its not like i am in shorts. No idea whats wrong!" :)
01:59 AM randy: hehe
02:01 AM randy: most girls i know do "layering" theire clothes under 10°C
02:02 AM randy: but until then, the skirts are really short :)
02:32 AM Deejay: moin
03:18 AM Loetmichel: OH GOD! WHY? not enough that my wife has gall bladder stones and went to the hospital this weekend. Just got a call from my brother in law: my sister is in the hospital, too. Stroke, she cant move her left half and has problems speaking. :(
03:23 AM XXCoder: :(
03:24 AM XXCoder: hope she getys better
04:43 AM pere: Hi. Can someone get this command working: time torsocks curl -v https://www.linuxcnc.org/
04:48 AM sadara: pere, you would have to inform curl of the SOCKS proxy information wouldn't you?
04:49 AM sadara: pere, ignore me, that is wrong, it seems it hooks into the lib directly
04:50 AM sadara: pere, have you already configured TOR?
04:54 AM pere: sadara: of course. :)
04:55 AM pere: my guess is that the web service is set up to "protect itself" against tor usage...
04:57 AM sadara: pere, I can check that
04:59 AM pere: now it started working
05:12 AM sadara: pere, you're not going to win an argument to allow tor access with a hosting company, the amount of port scans, spam and other junk that comes from tor exit nodes means means any decent hosting provider will block them, and when asked to allow acces, they will tell you to find a different hosting provider
05:14 AM pere: sadara: well, you do what you have to do... I use tor for almost everything, and the problems linuxcnc.org have is sad to see.
05:14 AM sadara: pere, you can try tunneling through tor to a proxy of some kind?
05:14 AM pere: at least cloudflare allow their users to to choose.
05:15 AM pere: sadara: using a proxy like that do not really help with privacy.
05:16 AM sadara: I mean you computer -> tor -> public proxy. You are then protected by tor
05:16 AM sadara: but you web traffic comes from the public proxy
05:17 AM pere: are you aware of a public proxy like that? 'My experience is that no such proxy exist, so I would have to set it up for myself, causing all connections from it to originate from me.
05:18 AM sadara: SOCKS5 USA NY: 142.93.68.63:2434 username:vpn password:unlimited
05:19 AM sadara: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tunnels/Connecting_to_Tor_before_a_proxy
05:19 AM pere: thanks.
05:20 AM pere: but to be clear, you are saying that it is intentional that linuxcnc.org is privacy hostile and block access for Tor users?
05:21 AM sadara: no, I'm saying that the hosting provider might be
05:21 AM sadara: blocking TOR is not about being provaxy hostile
05:22 AM pere: well, it is privacy hostile, no matter its intention.
05:22 AM sadara: it is more to do with protecting the hosting providers idiot customers that don't lock down their software
05:23 AM XXCoder: from what im reading, are you saying that linuxcnc.org and hosting server is one and same?
05:23 AM XXCoder: its very much not.
05:23 AM sadara: pere, that argument makes no sense. that is like calling airlines "free travel hostile" because they don't let travellers carry explosives on board.
05:24 AM XXCoder: hosting company is one and seperate from linuxcnc org
05:24 AM sadara: yes, they are blocking a very small part of the population, but for a very good reason
05:24 AM pere: airlines allow travellers to carry explosives on board, it is just more expensive. :)
05:24 AM pere: just check out the rules for bringing firearms on planes. :)
05:26 AM sadara: pere, actually, no they don't. small amounts of ammunition are up to the pilots discretion. packaged explosives are outright banned
05:27 AM sadara: (I used to be a pilot)
05:28 AM sadara: but regardless, it's not up to linuxcnc.org. yes, they could change hosting companies, but all good hosting companies will block TOR nodes at their edge.,
05:30 AM pere: that is not true, but I understand you believe so.
05:30 AM XXCoder: lol
05:30 AM pere: not all good hosting companies block TOR nodes at their edge.
05:30 AM pere: but perhaps your and mine definition of good differ...
05:31 AM XXCoder: pere trust me when i say this - nobodys interested in your linuxcnc site browsing patterns
05:32 AM sadara: pere, to be much more specific, a PASSENGER is not allowed to transport EXPLOSIVES in their luggage or carry on in a DOMESTIC or INTERNATION flight
05:34 AM sadara: https://www.cyber.gov.au/acsc/view-all-content/publications/defending-against-malicious-use-tor-network
05:34 AM sadara: if the legitimate access of internet-exposed services from the Tor network is significant, organisations may need to seek a policy decision
05:34 AM sadara: so far you are the only user reporting a problem
05:34 AM pere: I'm sure you will say they are hosted on a bad provider, and I would agree, but as a counter example: torsocks curl -v https://www.machinekit.io/
05:36 AM sadara: www.machinekit.io is hosted by microsoft, so I feel I can rest my case
05:37 AM sadara: Fastly
05:39 AM JT-Shop: morning
05:40 AM sadara: and a very good morning to you
05:40 AM Tom_L: morning
05:40 AM pere: morning. :)
05:40 AM JT-Shop: LAN is down in the cave for some reason...
05:41 AM JT-Shop: back down there to look
05:41 AM Tom_L: stirring up too much dust in the garage
05:42 AM sadara: I have a question. I have for output, lets call them north/south/east/west. I would like the corresponding output to be enabled when the spindle is traveling in that direction. any idea on where to start looking to implement this? (This is to control 4 port air blast chip clearing on a router)
05:42 AM sadara: *for four
05:43 AM Tom_L: your cam post knows what X Y direction you are to be moving
05:44 AM sadara: pere, are you working on getting linuxcnc working on a RPI?
05:44 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:44 AM Tom_L: there is an rpi iso on site
05:44 AM rs[m]: sadara: in linuxcnc?
05:44 AM JT-Cave: hmm I had the cable plugged into the wrong place I think
05:44 AM sadara: Tom_L, I'd rather not do it in post, but that is an excellent fall back option
05:45 AM sadara: yes, in linuxcnc
05:45 AM sadara: Tom_L, most of the gtk/qt is broken (at least the parts I need) on RPI
05:46 AM rs[m]: sadara: you could wire up the speed outputs of the motion component either to classicladder and deal with it there or you could do it explicitly with HAL components
05:46 AM sadara: rs[m], can you elaborate on the HAL option?
05:47 AM pere: revcane: sadara currently working on converting the linuxcnc documentation system to use p4a and be translatable using a web service like weblate.
05:47 AM pere: s/revcane//
05:49 AM rs[m]: sadara: so you wire up your X axis velocity to a comp component (look at manpage)
05:49 AM Tom_L: sadara, look at the axis code to see where the distance to go etc are derived
05:50 AM sadara: rs[m], Thanks
05:50 AM sadara: Tom_L, Thanks
05:50 AM rs[m]: velocity > 0 -> travels "east", velocity < 0, travels "west"
05:50 AM rs[m]: ditto for other axis and north/south
05:51 AM Tom_L: or possibly joint.N.motor-pos-cmd
05:52 AM rs[m]: motor-pos-cmd doesn't help, you want the direction of motion, i.e. the sign of the derivative = velocity
05:54 AM rs[m]: http://www.linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/man/man9/comp.9.html
06:10 AM rene-dev3 is now known as rene-dev
06:32 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:55 AM unterhausen: I need to come up with 3 areas where the person I'm recommending could improve
09:58 AM CloudEvil: Melee combat?
09:59 AM unterhausen: he's too honest. He'll tell you that he honestly doesn't care what you think
10:00 AM unterhausen: the only one I came up with is true,so I probably shouldn't include it
10:12 AM t4nk_freenode: blindly following orders!!
10:24 AM roycroft: happy no spend money day
10:35 AM unterhausen: my wife wants to go appliance shopping. I asked her if she thought she could handle the karmic debt of shopping on black friday
10:36 AM unterhausen: her response was she didn'
10:36 AM unterhausen: t think she should talk to me today
10:37 AM roycroft: i am on track to get my bandsaw set up on sunday still
10:37 AM roycroft: it has two 4" dust ports, so i'll need to get a 4" y connector to tie them together
10:37 AM firephoto__ is now known as firephoto_
10:37 AM roycroft: i shall go to woodcraft to get that tomorrow, not today
10:39 AM roycroft: but karmic debth notwithstanding, would a sane person really want to go shopping today anyway?
10:39 AM roycroft: there will be thousands of insane people doing the same thing
10:40 AM roycroft: the sane ones will be outnumbered by orders of magnitude
10:43 AM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhausen: poor at ignoring corporate hypocracy
10:44 AM CaptHindsight[m]: not good at taking credit for other people work or ideas
10:44 AM unterhausen: I actually ended up saying something like that. Not forceful enough at advocating for himself
10:45 AM unterhausen: takes on too many of the unpleasant tasks in a group project
10:46 AM unterhausen: he's a really good guy, I hope he gets an engineering job where they will appreciate him
10:46 AM CaptHindsight[m]: under developed brown nosing skills
10:48 AM CaptHindsight[m]: questions like that are a red flag
10:49 AM CaptHindsight[m]: list 3 reasons that we should not hire you
10:50 AM * roycroft should start installing casters soon, but has only had the heat on in the shop for an hour or so
10:50 AM roycroft: it is 8 degrees out, though, so the shop should be reasonably warm by now
10:50 AM tiwake[m]: CaptHindsight[m]: because you would be a dumbass if you didn't
10:51 AM roycroft: temperature does not matter for installing casters, of course, but the next step is painting the top
10:51 AM CaptHindsight[m]: i get cranky when I work over 80 hours in one week
10:51 AM roycroft: i don't
10:51 AM tiwake[m]: no kidding
10:51 AM roycroft: because i don't work 80 hours in a week
10:52 AM CaptHindsight[m]: i don't respond to email between the hours of 10pm to 7 am
10:53 AM roycroft: i don't respond to work emails outside working hours
10:54 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I occasionally give honest and critical analysis of the projects direction and viability
10:54 AM tiwake[m]: heh
10:57 AM CaptHindsight[m]: I can complete my assigned tasks properly or your way
10:58 AM CaptHindsight[m]: ... doesn't matter to me
11:03 AM roycroft: spam spam spam spam
11:03 AM roycroft: i can hardly delete it as fast as it rolls in
11:12 AM * skunkwor1s is currently dialed into work...
11:12 AM skunkwor1s is now known as skunkworks
11:12 AM skunkworks: there I am
11:26 AM * roycroft is not working today
11:27 AM unterhausen: I think they are trying to see if you really believe the multiple guess ratings you give the applicant
11:28 AM unterhausen: I was hoping to get some help online for bs-ing the questions though.
01:50 PM unterhausen: need a dryer part so I ordered it from amazon on black friday. Now I'm going to suffer eternal damnation in trade for dry clothes
01:51 PM roycroft: you could have ordered it tomorrow
01:51 PM unterhausen: then I would have wet clothes on Sunday
01:51 PM roycroft: you could line dry them
01:53 PM unterhausen: what might have been ...
01:56 PM roycroft: i line dry a lot of my clothes, even in the rainy season
01:57 PM roycroft: hemp fabric does not hold up to dryer temperatures well, and tie-dye fades in the dryer
02:24 PM JT-MachineShop: that's a record, got two 7i96's in stock and both are gone in under an hour
02:57 PM roycroft: paint is drying faster today than it was yesterday
02:57 PM * roycroft has the second coat of primer on already
02:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is there an Ethernet Mesa card with FPGA and Step + Dir all in one card? Does not need an additional IO card.
03:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why doesn't https://mesaus.com/ show up in Google searches?
03:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: eusurplus.com shows up 2nd and then it's all just wiki, forum cnc etc links
03:03 PM JT-MachineShop: I'm not sure why I don't show up
03:03 PM JT-MachineShop: yes, there are two ethernet stepper cards 7i76E and 7i96
03:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT-MachineShop: you might to find out why Google isn't showing you any attention
03:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm searching for the 7i96 features at http://store.mesanet.com why doesn't it clearly stand out?
03:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "These boards do not need additional daughter cards" 7i96, 7i87 etc
03:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sorry 7i97
03:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I know about them and I can't find them
03:09 PM JT-MachineShop: that's not my web site
03:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I know, i can't find yours on Google and Mesa doesn't have a flowchart like your site
03:10 PM JT-MachineShop: weird 0 hits for mesaus.com from google
03:11 PM JT-MachineShop: I prob have something not configured in woocommerce
03:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you have a small army here once you figure it out to get you some clicks for street cred
03:12 PM JT-MachineShop: a google search for mesaus returns a bunch of scrabble word sites lol
03:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: people do end up here on irc and ask where your website is from time to time
03:13 PM XXCoder: yeah
03:13 PM XXCoder: forum and here is probably only sources of "advert" for you
03:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I think it broke when you changed hosts
03:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: been a year or so, forget with pandemic memory loss
03:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I caught my Amazon delivery driver just as he was pulling away from our door....
03:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he was going to mark it unable to deliver
03:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no knock, no ring the bell, just drive up and give up, WTF?
03:40 PM JT-MachineShop: it might have broken when I switched from open cart to woocommerce
03:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: good thing they have live tracking
03:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had just decided to check on ETA 2 minutes before he got here
03:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: JT-MachineShop: Google offers website traffic monitoring
03:43 PM roycroft: i've found that a lot lately, capthindsight
03:43 PM roycroft: no-knock delivery rejections
03:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you can just use it for a short time until it gets established with their searches
03:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ok, so it's a new thing with them
03:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I know it's a business and a friday during a holiday but come on at least beep the horn
03:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I asked him if was just going to blow by and he said the he already entered "not available" into his tracker
03:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so the delivery will show up as not able to deliver even though the parcel is in my hands now
03:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah but now it says "delivered"
03:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: tooling I was planning on using today
03:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ordered similar on ebay Monday and they haven't even shipped yet
03:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: new level of can't get anything done for the USA
03:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the 7-11 nearby stopped the Amazon locker service
03:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and all the others are not 24/7
03:55 PM roycroft: and i have ups, fedex, and amazon deliveries all scheduled for tomorrow and sunday
03:56 PM roycroft: so instead of poor delivery service 5 days/week, now they're offering poor delivery service 7 days/week
03:59 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/OqwnOn-XhQI
03:59 PM XXCoder: guiy makes 6 jaw
04:01 PM CaptHindsight[m]: figures, the next nearest 24/7 Amazon locker is 10 miles away
04:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: I'd even pay extra fpr weekend delivery and they would skip our address
04:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and UPS skips any Monday before a holiday or Friday after a holiday, since we are not available even though we are
04:03 PM unterhaus: I guess you can't mark it as undeliverable if the gps doesn't show you went there
04:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I even know my UPS driver, I'll ask him in the driveway if he has our parcel and it won't even be on the his truck on those days
04:05 PM unterhaus: so far the local usps hasn't been broken
04:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he takes his afternoon after lunch break down the street
04:05 PM unterhaus: I imagine it's worse in other places
04:05 PM unterhaus: pennsyltuckians may have their faults, but they are hard workers
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the UPS driver says the dispatch will flag deliveries on those Mondays and Fridays so you have to be on the right list
04:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: since they are out doing deliveries and pickups on those days
04:08 PM roycroft: i generally don't worry about it too much
04:08 PM roycroft: most of the time it doesn't matter exactly when something arrives, as i try to order things well in advance
04:09 PM roycroft: but sometimes vendors don't ship promptly, or the courier has a 'delivery exception' due to no particular reason, and the parcels sit around for extended periods of time
04:10 PM roycroft: or it comes via usps, and they bounce it back and forth between sfo and seattle a few times, with the occasional diversion to new york, before they finally get around to delivering my priority mail 2 weeks arter it was shipped
04:11 PM roycroft: i especially enjoy ups "weather" delays when there is no "weather" anywhere along the route
04:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have found a few glitches in USPS
04:20 PM Tom_L: just a few?
04:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there is an area just outside LA when we ship Priority it always goes from Chicago to Florida then to CA
04:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: short list we found, of oddballs like that
04:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: same zip codes and always via some odd cross country route
04:21 PM Tom_L: they still use the pony express on certain routes
04:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some mistakes aren't bad, we used to get free stuff from Amazon
04:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they would deliver here and then say keep it
04:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it finally stopped when it was a large piece of furniture
04:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we still have the cabinet, but that finally got their attention
04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Fedex once left a package with $25K of parts next door without letting us know
04:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lazy driver
04:24 PM roycroft: the pony express would be faster than current usps delivery times
04:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: box of inkjet heads was sitting in a hallway on the floor
04:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: take pics and bring witnesses if that ever happens
04:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: since the driver marks it as delivered to your address with signature
04:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: USPS around here will even give me the cell number of the worker and their location to get parcels if they skip our address
04:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's before it gets to our local post office where all the "fun" is
04:45 PM XXCoder: jt yeah usually trouble free here on packages too
04:45 PM XXCoder: it depends on workers i guess
04:46 PM roycroft: the usps problems began when louis dejoy closed the local sorting center
04:46 PM roycroft: now everything gets sorted in roseburg, an hour south of here
04:46 PM XXCoder: is louis still postal master?
04:46 PM roycroft: except sometime it gets sorted in seattle, 4 hours north of here
04:46 PM roycroft: he is
04:46 PM roycroft: the president cannot fire the postmaster general
04:46 PM roycroft: the postal commission has to do that
04:47 PM roycroft: the postal commission does not have a quorum, and hasn't in years
04:47 PM XXCoder: :(
04:47 PM roycroft: president biden has nominated new postal commissioners
04:47 PM roycroft: republicans in the senate have blocked their confirmations
04:47 PM roycroft: and until there are new commissioners, there will be no new postmaster general
04:49 PM roycroft: if i send a letter to someone in eugene, it has to go to the regional sorting center and come back before it gets delivered
04:49 PM roycroft: what used to be next day service now takes a week
04:49 PM XXCoder: if I recall right, wa state essentally ignored decommsion of sorting machines
04:50 PM XXCoder: probably why we still have great mail here
04:50 PM XXCoder: *decomission order
04:50 PM roycroft: i don't see how that can be
04:50 PM roycroft: the state has no jurisdiction over the postal service at all
04:50 PM roycroft: it's all federal
04:50 PM XXCoder: well yeah, i meant postal people in wa state lol
04:51 PM roycroft: your state may have struck a deal with the postal service
04:51 PM roycroft: yes, but every one of those postal workers is a federal government employee
04:51 PM roycroft: they do not work for the state
04:51 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
04:51 PM XXCoder: i said IN wa state, not state actors
04:52 PM roycroft: but as i said, your state may have made a deal with the feds
04:52 PM XXCoder: ie nothing relating to wa state goverment
04:52 PM roycroft: they would have been fired if they ignored a directive like that
04:52 PM XXCoder: yeah dunno what happened
04:52 PM roycroft: it seems doubtful to me that washington would have struck a deal with the postal service, though
04:53 PM roycroft: the decommissioning was done intentionally to harm blue states
04:53 PM roycroft: and washington is even more blue than oregon
04:53 PM XXCoder: yeah
04:53 PM unterhaus: on a different note, should I tell my wife that the reason I have to fix the dryer every few weeks was something she told me about?
04:53 PM XXCoder: heard nothing about postal here for while, people people was already fired
04:53 PM unterhaus: and I ignored?
04:53 PM XXCoder: *maybe
04:57 PM roycroft: are you still ignoring it?
04:58 PM roycroft: i am getting tired of all the spam
04:58 PM roycroft: i'm really getting tired of the same vendors sending multiple emails today
04:58 PM roycroft: some of them a half dozen or more
04:59 PM unterhaus: yeah, I was not happy I get 2 copies of every email from send cut send
05:00 PM unterhaus: and now their "sale" is buying gift certificates
05:05 PM roycroft: if you don't know what to spend your money on, that does not matter
05:06 PM roycroft: what's important is to spend money
05:06 PM roycroft: and spend it NOW
05:09 PM Tom_L: and be sure to buy something you don't need. eventually maybe possibly you might need it
05:10 PM JT-Shop: I think I spent enough Wednesday!
05:10 PM Tom_L: naw
05:11 PM Tom_L: just ask them
05:11 PM Tom_L: although the day i got 3 the owner came down from his office and shook my hand
05:11 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:11 PM roycroft: i have spent too much money lately, and i'll be spending more when i start ordering more components for my cnc router
05:12 PM Tom_L: they're a decent dealership anyway
05:12 PM roycroft: i do not need to spend any today
05:12 PM JT-Shop: so is the one I go to
05:12 PM Tom_L: down to installing the shower door and paint now
05:12 PM Tom_L: my dealer has been there for many years
05:12 PM JT-Shop: time to upset the chickens and install the window covers
05:12 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:12 PM roycroft: speaking of paint, i should see if the primer is sandable yet
05:13 PM roycroft: i'd like to finish painting before bed time
05:14 PM roycroft: it needs another hour
05:15 PM roycroft: that's ok though - i should still be able to finish before it's too late
05:15 PM roycroft: i just turned the heat up in the shop, and the heater is pretty close to the saw stand that i'm painting
05:22 PM JT-Shop: the service guy shook my hand, been dealing with him since the first one
05:23 PM Tom_L: that was my first dealings with honda
05:24 PM Tom_L: so far it's been better than some of the other dealers
05:24 PM Tom_L: one i wouldn't set foot in the door again
05:25 PM JT-Shop: I know that kind of place
05:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i know people that work at dealerships that don't want to deal with their dealership :)
05:26 PM Tom_L: it was years ago but we were looking for a van and found one. told them we were on our way to get it and they sold it out from under us while we were on the way
05:26 PM XXCoder: geez
05:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Stealership
05:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have had the same trying to buy from private parties
05:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: tell them it's an hour drive to get there so is that OK,
05:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: then as we are pulling up someone is handing cash to the seller
05:28 PM roycroft: i had a guy get really pissed off at me last spring
05:28 PM roycroft: i had listed a jointer for sale on cl
05:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: seller shouts out "gotta do what I gotta do"
05:28 PM roycroft: a guy responded, saying he was in portland, but he could come get it the next day
05:29 PM roycroft: a local guy responded shortly after, saying he wanted it
05:29 PM roycroft: i told him he was second in the queue, and the first one was coming down the next day
05:29 PM roycroft: and that i'd call him if the first guy did not show or did not get it
05:29 PM roycroft: he started yelling that he had cash in his hand and could come over right away
05:29 PM roycroft: but i demurred
05:30 PM roycroft: i had already set the appointment with the other person, and i felt obligated to hold it for him
05:30 PM JT-Shop: well Rusty is gone and I think the Uplander has a new zip code Monday... just gotta sell the Can Am trailer
05:30 PM JT-Shop: that't the honest thing to do
05:30 PM roycroft: that's just the way i do things
05:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: "you bastard" :)
05:31 PM cradek: how'd it turn out? did the first guy show up? (the problem with being honest in this way is half of everyone is a total flake)
05:31 PM roycroft: maybe that's why i'm not a millionaire
05:31 PM roycroft: i don't know how to be a jerk to people for my own personal gain
05:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: worst was probably showing up as 4 others arrive to see the same vehicle
05:31 PM roycroft: the first guy showed up, was delighted with the machine, and took it away
05:31 PM cradek: sweet
05:32 PM roycroft: he had a hard time believing it was 20+ years old
05:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i waited until someone handed the seller some cash to close the sale and then said i was going to offer $500 more but oh well
05:33 PM roycroft: but on the other hand
05:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: he was so pissed
05:33 PM roycroft: when someone calls and offers less than my asking price, and i've had other interest, i am firm on the price
05:34 PM roycroft: if nobody has scheduled an appointment yet i'll tell the person they can be the first to come over, but as long as there is other interest i won't lower the price
05:34 PM roycroft: that often does not go over well
05:35 PM roycroft: these days, though, i usually list my price on cl as "firm", and just remind people who want to lowball that i'm not open to offers
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: never load before getting the cash
05:35 PM roycroft: i usually price things for a little less than i think i could get if i worked at it
05:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: that has surprised a few
05:35 PM roycroft: more than once people have tried loading before paying
05:35 PM roycroft: i stop them
05:36 PM Tom_L: that's like walking out of a store first ehh?
05:36 PM XXCoder: smart because if fall down and break "oh its broken im not paying"
05:36 PM roycroft: and when they hand me the cash and then ask me to help them load, i'll say "sure, but it's your now, so if anything happens while loading it's on you, not me"
05:37 PM roycroft: i've had folks get pissed off when i pull out an anti-counterfeit marker and hold their money up to the light to make sure it looks real
05:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had a guy show up without any blankets, straps or chains to get a complete engine
05:37 PM JT-Shop: when I pick up my box wine at the local store the owner holds the door open for me to load it in the vehicle then I go back in and pay
05:37 PM roycroft: sorry, but when some random person hands me a bunch of crisp, fresh $100 bills, i'm obligated to do my best to ensure they are genuine
05:37 PM roycroft: it's nothing personal
05:38 PM roycroft: if the owner knows you that's an entirely different thing
05:38 PM roycroft: i'm taking about random cl people
05:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I don't mind as long as they check the change they want to give me
05:38 PM roycroft: that's the thing, capthindsight
05:38 PM roycroft: it really isn't personal
05:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some places use a marker on $20's
05:39 PM roycroft: even if i thought the buyer was totally honest, i have no idea who gave the buyer those $100 bills
05:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so I ask them to double check my change and they usually refuse
05:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i just want it to be fair, imagine that
05:39 PM roycroft: i don't use cash much these days
05:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i have no problem with them checking
05:40 PM roycroft: well if you're being fair, you shouldn't ask them to check your change
05:40 PM roycroft: you should bring your own marker and check it yourself
05:40 PM Tom_L: nice enough today i had the windows open
05:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: when I hand anyone over $100 I tell them to count it out in front of me even if they say they trust me
05:40 PM roycroft: i have seen cashiers try to put my money directly in the till before giving me my change
05:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Offer to pay for the marker service
05:41 PM roycroft: i have to stop them, and they often can't comprehend why i stopped them
05:41 PM roycroft: when they do get it i suspect they're pissed off because they got caught
05:42 PM roycroft: but as i said, i rarely use cash these days
05:42 PM roycroft: so those kinds of issues don't come up much
05:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my favorite is when they ask me how i want my bills
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I just say make sure I didn't give you too much and they will count every time
05:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: say it's $80 i offer multiple combos, some are well over $80 if added correctly
05:43 PM cradek: heh two 20s and six 10s please
05:43 PM roycroft: when i was trained as a cashier i was told that when they tendered payment, i was to tell them the total amount again, and the amount remitted
05:43 PM roycroft: then set the money on the top of the till
05:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or no available denominations, I'd like 2 $30's and the rest in singles
05:44 PM roycroft: pull out their change, count it back to them (not the amount ,but count to the amount tendered)
05:44 PM roycroft: and only when they accept the change i would put their tender in the till
05:45 PM roycroft: and that's the only acceptable way to handle a transaction like that, imo, but one that is rarely seen any more
05:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I has a bartender unable to count to $100
05:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: had to get a second bartender to check her math
05:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: has/had
05:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the money never left the counter
05:47 PM JT-Shop: my first job was a cashier at Handy City
05:47 PM roycroft: that's not necessarily a bad policy
05:47 PM JT-Shop: they trained us about all kinds of scams
05:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: she just could not count past about $80 and gave up
05:47 PM JT-Shop: kids can't read script anymore...
05:47 PM roycroft: that's an employee trust thing, though, and it's generally easier to establish an employer-employee trust relationship than an employee-customer relationship
05:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: she was $10 short after 3 tries
05:48 PM roycroft: for one thing the employee has to show up every day, while the customer never has to return
05:48 PM roycroft: kids can't tell time any more
05:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: those clock things? :)
05:49 PM roycroft: they know how to set alarms on their phones
05:49 PM roycroft: but beyond that they have no concept of time or how it works
05:49 PM roycroft: when the alarm goes off they follow instructions
05:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hah try saying quarter to 8 or similar,
05:49 PM roycroft: i think most of them can read the time on their phones
05:50 PM roycroft: but an analog clock is totally incomprehensible
05:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or quarter past
05:50 PM JT-Shop: time to knock off and go inside for the night
05:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: seems it's like older English currency
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lost in time
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: well clocks have 2 or even 3 hands
05:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and move at different rates
05:52 PM Tom_L: when i ask one of my kids how much fuel he has in his car he replies in miles instead of 1/2 tank or 1/4 tank...
05:52 PM Tom_L: throws me every time
05:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe they convert for you
05:53 PM Tom_L: aparently the hondas estimate what is left for you
05:54 PM Tom_L: i rarely drive any of them so i'm not even sure what all the display shows
05:54 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what I do when reading an analog fuel gauge in a car I'm familiar with
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and they tend to do it all slightly differently or completely the opposite from others
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: wiper delays
05:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or the digital types that let you configure what and how it is displayed
05:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: MPH, MPG and fuel economy index
05:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: distance since last fuel door opening
05:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I topped off a fuel tank and drove 2 miles to drop off a rental and was flagged for not topping off the tank
05:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i complained and they dropped the $80 top off charge
05:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: car fun
06:00 PM roycroft: when i used to rent cars upon occasion i always asked them where the nearest filling station was when i picked the car up
06:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: tooling that earlier arrived works
06:04 PM Tom_L: inserts?
06:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah
06:06 PM seb_kuzm1nsky is now known as seb_kuzminsky
06:06 PM Tom_L: my kid mentioned they're having issues getting iscar inserts
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.shars.com/knurling-turning-and-facing-holder-10-type210-bxa-1 the "knurlers" only have a plain bearing
06:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah I had to shop around
06:07 PM Tom_L: he goes thru alot of them
06:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: took a gamble on some OSCAR inserts
06:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Chinese ISCAR
06:07 PM Tom_L: :)
06:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: OSCARBIDE
06:08 PM XXCoder: capt whats plain bearing "knurler" fopr?
06:09 PM XXCoder: oh yes for certain application of centering part
06:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=OSCARBIDE&i=tools&ref=nb_sb_noss
06:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: XXCoder: came with the set, it works but it won't last long without keeping it lubed
06:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah i used it that way as well
06:10 PM XXCoder: thanks clickspring for teaching me that lol
06:10 PM XXCoder: not surpised on lubing
06:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: didn't messure to see how centered it is
06:11 PM Tom_L: 2 rollers?
06:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: , yes
06:11 PM Tom_L: does it float or do you have to get it dead nuts on center?
06:11 PM Tom_L: the ones we used floated
06:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: saw lots of Sandvik inserts on ebay, lots of lots that are no longer in production
06:12 PM Tom_L: we also had 'timed' thread rollers that would go to the center of the bar
06:12 PM Tom_L: 2 rollers
06:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: only floats if you don't lock the post
06:13 PM Tom_L: one was a 2 roller \ / configuration for a diamond knurl
06:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: a guy has them for ~$1ea at 500 pcs but they are just under the size I need
06:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/403211351267 or these, just odd sizes
06:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/193873542298 a bargain but only 2mm
06:19 PM Tom_L: good if you just happened to have the right holder
06:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: at a few cents a piece you might be able to find a holder for $25 and still come out way ahead
06:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but used holders tend to be a bit worn
06:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: decent carbide inserts are >$10ea in low quan
06:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: with machinekit archived is anyone looking into merging any of their tree back to LCNC?
06:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ah it is the new split versions https://github.com/machinekit/machinekit-hal and https://github.com/machinekit/machinekit-cnc
07:16 PM serp: is development of machinekit stalled?
07:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the IRC channel is pretty quiet, the repos are several months to 2 years old
07:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://matrix.to/#/#machinekit:matrix.org
08:29 PM silopolis[m]: serp CaptHindsight you may find this interesting... https://github.com/machinekit/EMCApplication/issues/2#issuecomment-971731200
08:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: silopolis: well last comment was 8 days ago, so don't hold your breath
08:41 PM roycroft: aah, pizza is out of the oven
08:41 PM roycroft: i am skipping thanksgiving leftovers for today
08:41 PM roycroft: i can get back to them tomorrow
