12:26 AM Berg: is there a way to make the kinux cnc send the commands to a raspberry pi and use a python code to run the steppers from the gpio pins on the pi?
02:03 AM Deejay: moin
04:54 AM JT-Cave: morning
04:55 AM Tom_L: morning
05:56 AM JT-Cave: crap I didn't push my file and directory watcher program to github
05:59 AM XXCoder: any luck with recovery
06:00 AM JT-Cave: no
06:09 AM JT-Cave: now I can't remember the recovery program name someone told me about the other day
06:10 AM XXCoder: forgot who said it too
06:10 AM XXCoder: i did link to couple utilities but both didnt workf or you
06:13 AM JT-Cave: found it testdisk
06:22 AM XXCoder: ok hope it works
07:10 AM JT-Cave: doesn't seem to have any files left that I need
07:42 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: it is the coupling for the z ball screw.. It is lose and you cannot get to it without removing the headstock
07:43 AM skunkworks: the coupling is held on by a taper pin.. it must be loose.
07:43 AM skunkworks: the end of the ball screw is turned to 1.75" and the held the couplig on with a taper pin? crazy
08:10 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, Oct 25 17:13:37 <flyback> r-studio and several other recovery sw's can use dd images
08:10 AM JT-Cave: there's nothing to recover sadly
08:10 AM Tom_L: k
08:11 AM Tom_L: did you get anything off it?
08:11 AM JT-Cave: no, only files was some log files and some of the directory structure
09:59 AM flyback: :(
10:00 AM flyback: even with r-studio
10:00 AM flyback: damn
01:05 PM JT-Cave: r-studio won't launch Path to R not specified, and no module binary specified; Invalid R module ()
01:09 PM roguish[m]: https://tech.slashdot.org/story/21/10/30/051201/linux-distros-beat-windows-11-in-phoronix-performance-testing
01:48 PM roycroft: well linuxcnc won't run on my pi, even when i'm at the console
01:49 PM roycroft: and i had walked away from that install for too long such that i don't remember exactly why i did parts of the build the way i did
01:49 PM roycroft: so i guess it's time to start over, and take even better notes this time
01:50 PM roycroft: i know exactly *what* i did, and could rebuild the image from scratch exactly as it is now, but i do not remember *why* i did some of it the way i did
01:51 PM roycroft: tom_l suggested that i should install debian buster, not raspbian buster, and that's what i intended to do long-term, but iirc raspbian ships with some drivers and utilities to make it easy to interface with the rpi hardware
01:51 PM roycroft: is there an rpi package for mainline debian that has those tools and drivers?
02:14 PM * roycroft found a debian image for rpi4 (it's easier on the 4, because rpis <4 boot from the gpu, not cpu, and require a non-free bootloader that debian shun)
02:14 PM roycroft: i'll install that and see about the rpi tools
02:15 PM JT-Shop: I just used the linuxcnc image...
02:16 PM roycroft: i did that initially, but i need to do a custom install
02:17 PM roycroft: and since i don't have all the component to finish building and testing the motion control system, i can work on the os and linuxcnc configuration while i'm waiting
02:20 PM JT-Shop: what do you have to customize?
02:20 PM roycroft: i want to install using xfs instead of ext4, and i want a data partition separate from the os partition
02:20 PM * JT-Shop punches out and goes inside to make pizza sauce
02:21 PM JT-Shop: ah that's right I remember now
02:21 PM roycroft: there are other utilities i need to install, but those could be done with any distro
02:21 PM roycroft: i think that if i can get this done the way i need it could be useful for others
02:22 PM JT-Shop: just reading that xfs can read larger files faster
02:22 PM roycroft: specifically the two partitions - i should think that anyone who runs linuxcnc on a pi would appreciate having the separate data partition (putting /home there)
02:22 PM roycroft: yes, it's a superior filesystem to ext? in many ways
02:22 PM JT-Shop: I can appreciate that for sure after my snafu
02:22 PM roycroft: it was developed by sgi for their graphics workstations
02:22 PM JT-Shop: bbib
02:23 PM roycroft: and dealing with large files more efficiently is a definite benefit when working with large graphics files
02:25 PM roycroft: fortuantely i have spare microsd cards, so it's easy to experiemnt without wiping out my existing config
02:28 PM roycroft: tonight is pizza night for me too, btw
02:28 PM roycroft: since i had a meeting last night i had to postpone pizza night
02:45 PM JT-Shop: going to try a new recipe for the crust using 00 Italian flour
02:52 PM roycroft: nice
02:53 PM roycroft: i don't make my crust from scratch any more
02:53 PM roycroft: i used to, but it takes too long, and there are two bakeries in town who make really good dough balls that i can just buy at the market, let rise for a half hour, and then toss and bake
02:55 PM JT-Shop: nice
03:02 PM * roycroft can be practical
03:31 PM roycroft: the rpi debian install i did is pretty broken
03:32 PM roycroft: probably because of the renaming of the buster repositories after bullseye was released
04:11 PM JT-Shop: finally got a good part, time to punch out and have a beer
05:18 PM JT-Shop: I like a sig on a guy on the arboristsite.com "I was hoping for a battle of wits but I see your unarmed"
05:20 PM XXCoder: omg new this old tony vbideo
05:21 PM XXCoder: sigh it talks of wits, but then uses your for you're
05:24 PM roycroft: Linux cncrouter 5.10.0-0.bpo.8-arm64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.46-4~bpo10+1 (2021-08-07) aarch64 GNU/Linux
05:24 PM roycroft: so i have debian 10.11 on the pi now
05:24 PM roycroft: and i just got xorg/xfce installed and working
05:25 PM roycroft: before i go any further i guess i should see if vnc works with this setup
05:27 PM JT-Shop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QueLm7ukkMc
05:32 PM JT-Shop: that's a little bigger than my biggest saw a MS391
05:36 PM roycroft: why didn't he just used a maul and perhaps a wedge to split those rounds?
05:38 PM JT-Shop: he was just demonstrating the torque of the saw, the rounds were much too small to noddle
05:39 PM JT-Shop: noodle even
05:40 PM JT-Shop: I only noodle rounds that are over 30" or so or crotches
05:42 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, typo on my part
05:42 PM JT-Shop: should have been you are unarmed
05:43 PM XXCoder: lol ok
05:43 PM JT-Shop: looking over my shoulder at the windblows pc and typing lol
05:43 PM roycroft: unlegged as well?
05:44 PM XXCoder: interesting uses of 3d printer in shpp https://youtu.be/e_8mpjNQkUo
05:44 PM XXCoder: *shop
05:44 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, I did get my /home directory on a separate hard drive
05:45 PM XXCoder: yeah, lower chance of wipong it out, but also have regular backups
05:45 PM * JT-Shop looks for the girl splitting firewood with a double blade axe barefoot
05:46 PM JT-Shop: working on a backup program in python to keep last modified date in a database and copy any files modified to another drive
05:46 PM JT-Shop: seems to be a fun exercise in programming
05:47 PM XXCoder: you do have NAS unless thats professional jobs only?
05:47 PM XXCoder: that lathe part length setter thing is interesting
05:47 PM JT-Shop: yes I have a NAS on my LAN
05:47 PM XXCoder: good if its very repeative
05:47 PM JT-Shop: it has 2 drives
05:48 PM JT-Shop: red or green I forget 4TB drives
05:51 PM XXCoder: thats cool :)
05:51 PM JT-Shop: time to make pizza dough
05:55 PM roycroft: i went to market a while ago and picked up the dough ball for dinner
05:55 PM roycroft: i got dough with rosemary today - one of my favorites
05:55 PM XXCoder: wow that videos amazing
09:54 PM _unreal_: quiet
10:19 PM TurBoss: hello
10:19 PM XXCoder: yo
10:20 PM TurBoss: hello XXCoder
10:21 PM XXCoder: whats up

10:21 PM XXCoder: same
10:21 PM TurBoss: helping a friend with some windows thing
10:21 PM hazzy[m]: Yo
10:22 PM TurBoss: hazzyhello!
10:22 PM hazzy[m]: TurBoss: hola!
10:22 PM * hazzy[m] is installing lcnc and QtPyVCP on a new device machine
10:22 PM TurBoss: cool!
10:22 PM hazzy[m]: Dev*
10:23 PM TurBoss: py3?
10:23 PM hazzy[m]: Yes!
10:23 PM TurBoss: 📿

10:23 PM TurBoss: did many things
10:24 PM TurBoss: got the gcode_text_editor to work
10:24 PM TurBoss: with find/replace
10:24 PM hazzy[m]: I saw! I got mini running with py3, and then realized I installed everything on the HDD instead of SSD, starting over
10:25 PM TurBoss: 🥢
10:27 PM hazzy[m]: Nice!!
10:27 PM hazzy[m]: Can't wait to try
10:27 PM TurBoss: hurray! thank you
