12:13 AM XXCoder: roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z67A3Myy6XM
12:13 AM XXCoder: lathe from nothing but basic tools? lets see if true lol
12:13 AM XXCoder: 2 grinders, one drill, and welder
12:13 AM roycroft: it's possible to make it really accurate
12:13 AM roycroft: but that's a lot of work
12:13 AM XXCoder: yeah. i guess he has access to LOT of cheap scrap
12:13 AM XXCoder: but not money
12:13 AM XXCoder: i wonder if he will do scraping
12:29 AM XXCoder: love that video so far lol
12:32 AM XXCoder: parts he do buy is understandable, he cannot grind up a belt after all
01:42 AM Deejay: moin
01:53 AM randy: morning

05:22 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:08 AM * JT-Cave wonders at what point the keyboard and mouse quit working on the rpi install
07:30 AM Tom_L: morning
07:33 AM JT-Cave: yo
07:37 AM JT-Cave: I think the rt kernel broke my mouse and keyboard on the pi
07:50 AM Tom_L: trying to build a new one?
07:52 AM Tom_L: regular $6.09 in Ca
08:03 AM JT-Cave: trying to test the rpi gpio and make a sample config
08:08 AM Tom_L: oh
08:26 AM JT-Cave: Andy's version the browser is broken... seems there is a roadblock everywhere I turn
08:31 AM Tom_L: odd
08:31 AM Tom_L: i used his and mine works ok
08:36 AM JT-Cave: I got an error about no sandbox with chrome
08:36 AM JT-Cave: maybe just use it for this
09:09 AM roguish[m]: good morning..... finally a little wet here......
09:17 AM JT-Cave: morning
10:30 AM pcw--home: regular is about $4.40 here
10:56 AM perry_j1987: issues with raspberry pi?
10:59 AM roycroft: regular unleaded is pushing $4/gallon here
10:59 AM roycroft: thank goodness i have a hybrid car that gets 50mpg, and that my commute to work is 20 feet now
11:00 AM perry_j1987: its around 3.07ish here
11:00 AM perry_j1987: i've been working off my couch for the past week or two though heh
11:02 AM roycroft: my insurance has gone down as well, since i don't commute to work any more
11:22 AM mrec: I'm sure some guys are using higher speed spindles here, does a mill have to be more rigid for higher rpm speeds or less?
11:26 AM roycroft: my arm is a bit sore today, but not too bad
11:27 AM roycroft: i have no energy at all today, though
11:31 AM mrec: got cov19 vaccine?
11:40 AM roycroft: yeah, i got my booster jab yesterday
11:41 AM roycroft: regarding spindle speed, i've not done any testing, but my thinking is this:
11:41 AM roycroft: higher spindle speed means smaller cutter to achieve the proper sfm
11:41 AM roycroft: smaller cutter means less material removed at a time, and less load on the mill
11:41 AM roycroft: so theoretically it can be less rigid and still maintain the same accuracy/surface finish
11:42 AM roycroft: however, there may be resonance issues with the higher spindle speed that could affect surface finish
11:42 AM Tom_L: roycroft, my kid uses a 2" shell mill at 20krpm
11:42 AM Tom_L: size does not matter but quality does
11:42 AM roycroft: so as always, as rigid as you can justify making the machine is what you should aim for
11:43 AM Tom_L: and
11:43 AM Tom_L: if you take a deeper cut with less side cut it's more efficient
11:44 AM Tom_L: you get the same or more material removal with less HP
11:44 AM roycroft: that makes sense to me
11:45 AM roycroft: so i just installed this relay hat for testing
11:45 AM mrec: I think about upgrading my machine
11:45 AM roycroft: it was touted as being directly addressable
11:45 AM mrec: it has 2.2k RPM and I think that's not sufficient for carbide
11:45 AM roycroft: i thought that meant i could just talk to the gpio pins on the pi and control it
11:45 AM mrec: carbide + steel
11:45 AM roycroft: but i had to enable i2c in order to see the hat
11:46 AM roycroft: which is no problem on the pi, as there is an i2cset utility built-in
11:47 AM roycroft: i don't have linuxcnc installed on the pi at the moment, though, and i'm not sure how that is going to work
11:48 AM roycroft: this is short term anyway - i ended up ordering the relay jt pointed to when i was informed that i need a heat sink for the pi, as i won't be able to piggyback a relay board if i'm using heat sinks
11:48 AM roycroft: but i'm going to see if i can get it working while waiting for that other relay board
12:05 PM Tom_L: the header on the rpi isn't so convenient for us
12:08 PM roycroft: it looks like i would need a custom hal module to talk i2c
12:09 PM Tom_L: that's doable
12:09 PM Tom_L: i did i2c on it to test it
12:09 PM roycroft: yeah, and someone did it for a reprap a while back
12:09 PM roycroft: i still can't use this hat with heat sinks, though
12:09 PM Tom_L: i have the pinout somewhere for that
12:10 PM Tom_L: not i2c, rather spi
12:10 PM Tom_L: there's a spi driver for it
12:10 PM roycroft: so it's not a long-term solution for me, unless i either mount the hat on another rpi din holder, or find a gpio extension
12:10 PM Tom_L: hostmot2
01:39 PM roycroft: it looks like i'll be getting a motor mount plate for my mill tomorrow
01:40 PM roycroft: hopefully i measured for it accurately
01:40 PM roycroft: the template i made from the drawing fits
01:40 PM roycroft: so i anticipate the mounting plate will fit
01:50 PM roguish[m]: roycroft: here's one for you.... https://interestingengineering.com/a-new-hardened-wood-knife-is-3-times-sharper-than-stainless-steel
01:57 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i'm ready to make wooden knives at this point
01:57 PM roycroft: i actually need to head out to the shop and see how many of the ball bearings that escaped yesterday i can round up
01:58 PM roycroft: with my motor plate arriving tomorrow, i need to start my lathe work
01:58 PM roycroft: which means finishing reassembly of my sanding cabinet, which means putting the drawer slide back together
02:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://uk.pcmag.com/old-desktop-pcs/136394/raspberry-pi-suffers-first-ever-price-increase
02:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/43988-remora-1-0-0-rc-released-for-testing#223777
02:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: STM32's that do the job of an FPGA ^^^
02:34 PM roycroft: somehow i found all the ball bearings
02:35 PM roguish[m]: what the heck happened? did they jump ship?
02:35 PM Tom_L: easier than feeding them back into a linear rail truck
02:35 PM roycroft: i had a drawer slide go nuts on me yesterday while i was reinstalling a drawer
02:35 PM roycroft: all the ball bearings escaped
02:35 PM roycroft: there were 42 of them
02:36 PM roycroft: reinstalling was easy
02:36 PM roycroft: it was rounding them up that i thought would be the problem
02:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I once had the balls drop from a ballscrew located on a pole above the roof of a building
02:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: new screw time
02:39 PM * roycroft wonders why linuxcnc requires a buttlod of tex packages to build
02:41 PM roycroft: and inkscape
02:41 PM roycroft: it's a good thinkg i have a 32GB microsd card
02:43 PM Tom_L: it's not _that_ big
02:44 PM Tom_L: although it has grown over the years... but who hasn't?
02:44 PM roycroft: i'll find out in a bit, once i finally get all the depencencies installed
02:44 PM Tom_L: did you see jt's dependency page?
02:45 PM Tom_L: https://gnipsel.com/linuxcnc/uspace/rpi4-emc.html
02:45 PM Tom_L: i think that's it
02:45 PM Tom_L: seems the one i saw was longer than that
03:03 PM roycroft: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
03:03 PM roycroft: /dev/root 29G 6.7G 22G 25% /
03:04 PM roycroft: and i am just starting the linuxcnc build
03:08 PM JT-Shop: epsom just sent me a pdf of the 2.04 software
03:10 PM roycroft: is that a new release?
03:10 PM * roycroft doesn't remember what he has, and can't be bothered to fire up the vm to check
03:11 PM JT-Shop: I requested a pdf manual because I'm not always near internet
03:11 PM roycroft: aah
03:12 PM roycroft: i had a rough start with epson, but since then i've been pleased with their customer service
03:19 PM roycroft: well, building linuxcnc on a pi did not go well
03:19 PM roycroft: i'll have to try cross-compiling it on my rpi-dev machine
04:00 PM roycroft: ok, so i can build it on a pi
04:00 PM roycroft: but not with a multi-threaded make - it exhausts memory and dies when i use -j4
05:16 PM perry_j1987: rendering takes so long in fusion 360 heh
05:16 PM perry_j1987: especially once you start and then eh i want a diff angle lol
05:16 PM perry_j1987: or change the depth of field slightly heh
05:17 PM Tom_L: every step has to be approved by the cloud ferry
05:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: crazy old people used to own their software
05:31 PM perry_j1987: its local rendering
05:31 PM perry_j1987: not using the cloud render option
05:31 PM perry_j1987: just prob issue that fusion 360 uses cpu for rendering instead of gpu
05:37 PM JT-Shop: https://www.cottagecraftworks.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/k/i/kitchen-utensil-opposite-view-(407-x-600).jpg
05:37 PM JT-Shop: wife wants one of those
05:37 PM JT-Shop: https://www.cottagecraftworks.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/1800x/040ec09b1e35df139433887a97daa66f/k/i/kitchen-utensil-lazy-susan-paper-towel-holder-spice-rack---oak-(421-x-600).jpg
05:39 PM JT-Shop: I think I can better utilize the space for spices instead of a s&p shaker and odd kitchen utensils
05:42 PM JT-Shop: only $217.90 if you select quarter sawn oak
05:42 PM JT-Shop: with shipping
05:44 PM Tom_L: can you order turntables?
05:44 PM JT-Shop: the bearings yea
05:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: make one 6ft tall
05:44 PM Tom_L: i suppose those are common
05:44 PM JT-Shop: https://www.woodcraft.com/search?q=Lazy+Susan+Bearing&button=search
05:45 PM Tom_L: bet i know what one of your next projects will be
05:45 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:45 PM Tom_L: put a fruit basket on top
05:46 PM JT-Shop: has to fit under the cabinet, I suggested building the kitchen 4' longer but wife said it was big enough... not
05:47 PM Tom_L: we were taught early on to listen to the wife
05:47 PM Tom_L: sometimes the rule should be broken
05:48 PM * Tom_L clicks off the picture so he doesn't have to make one too
06:09 PM JT-Shop: lol
06:21 PM JT-Shop: can't seem to get all the wood working machines in line with everything having room to work and able to plug in :( work on it tomorrow
06:21 PM JT-Shop: I give up for today
06:23 PM Tom_L: heh
06:23 PM Tom_L: still no reply from gecko
06:23 PM Tom_L: they shipped the driver out right away though
11:42 PM pere: hi. in <URL: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/devel/html/gcode/g-code.html#gcode:g41-g42 >, what does LTO mean?
11:44 PM XXCoder: i dont find any lto there?
11:44 PM XXCoder: did you mean TLO?
11:46 PM pere: yes, sorry. TLO.
11:46 PM XXCoder: anyway if its TLO, then it is tool length offset
11:47 PM pere: perhaps write it in out in full at least once on that page? would make the document easier to read.
11:47 PM XXCoder: yeah
