12:03 AM randy: morning
12:10 AM TurBoss: hello in de morning
01:42 AM solarwind: Am I running my oxy acetylene torch really rich? Because I depleted a ~150 ft^3 acetylene cylinder and my 330 ft^3 oxygen cylinder is still reading just above 2,000 psi
01:44 AM solarwind: I always adjust for a neutral flame, on the side of a slightly reducing flame if anything
01:45 AM solarwind: But I'd expect to consume a lot more oxygen than I did
01:46 AM solarwind: Maybe I should go for the 300 ft^3 acetylene cylinder when I exchange tomorrow
01:51 AM Deejay: moin
02:17 AM randy__ is now known as randy
03:49 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:51 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:10 AM unterhausen: the question of the morning is where did I put that bag of drywall compound
07:11 AM JT-Cave: under the chicken coop
07:20 AM Tom_L: morning
07:20 AM JT-Cave: yo
07:26 AM unterhausen: penn state surplus had some 30" monitors for $75. No place to put them here though
07:31 AM CloudEvil: 30" monitors are getting damn near $75...
07:31 AM CloudEvil: Assuming you don't mean the audio kind.
07:35 AM CloudEvil: Actually, I was misremembering, it's slightly below that size that prices have crashed enormously
08:25 AM unterhausen: I wasn't looking, but I haven't seen monitors that cheap.
08:28 AM unterhausen: quick glance at newegg shows that wqhd monitors are still pretty expensive
08:28 AM unterhausen: I wouldn't bother with a 1080p monitor on my desk, even as a second monitor
08:29 AM unterhausen: tv's are higher res than that nowadays for the most part
09:44 AM mrec: I'm milling some steel here, milling some contour which is 5cm long and around 7mm deep. So now I still have the problem at the end of those 5cm the endmill grabs too much material. Does anyone know a way how to process corners with g-code?
10:15 AM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56jCHIjpr6E 200 ton moving carriage assembly nearing completion at starbase.
10:15 AM CloudEvil: mrec: What do you mean, it grabs at the corners?
10:17 AM mrec: when the endmill is approaching the end of the 5cm there's still a wall. At that corner it will cut more material than during the entire path 0-eg. 4.9cm
10:17 AM mrec: and I hear that, the rpm is going down a bit
10:18 AM mrec: I did not observe damage yet but it could be close to damaging the carbide
11:41 AM Tom_L: mrec, climb or conventional milling>
11:44 AM roycroft: hi folks
11:44 AM roycroft: that rpi image builder tool i was discussing yesterday is designed to run on ubuntu, but i really dislike ubuntu, so i spent some time last night getting it installed on debian
11:45 AM Tom_L: hi
11:45 AM roycroft: and i was able to build a kernel with it last night, so i think i'm well on my way to being able to make rpi images
11:49 AM roycroft: the build tool has the shrinker-expander stuff built-in, btw
12:33 PM Tom_L: suppose i should go do a bit of wiring, the gecko driver is on the way
12:34 PM roycroft: i've done all the wiring i can for now
12:35 PM roycroft: i'm waiting for a relay socket
12:35 PM roycroft: i could actually do a little more wiring, but very minor stuff
02:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if they have a tool to build images why don't they spend time on building kernels and getting graphics accel working right? Oh yeah....Ubuntu...nvm
02:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://github.com/bdring/FluidNC/wiki
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.tindie.com/stores/33366583/
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "My goal is to make the easiest to use CNC controllers."
02:52 PM Tom_L: ok, one end of the wiring is done, waiting on the driver
03:13 PM roycroft: grr
03:14 PM roycroft: i was reassembling my sanding cabinet at lunch today, and one of the drawer slides came apart while i was installing the drawer
03:14 PM roycroft: there are dozens of tiny ball bearings scattered about now
03:18 PM roycroft: hmm, it looks like all the facebook problems will be going away
03:18 PM roycroft: reports are that they are changing their name
03:18 PM XXCoder: weird way of controlling machine https://youtu.be/l1SS0CKTmLI
03:43 PM aaron_: so has any one ran into an issue with trying to run latency-test on a XFCE DE? i am getting error contructing table unknown color name e4e4e4
03:44 PM aaron_: i can run the latency histogram and probebasic run fine but not the stock latency test
03:45 PM Tom_L: what version and how was it built?
03:49 PM aaron_: 4.12.2
03:50 PM aaron_: i didnt build it just installed it from repro
04:09 PM unterhausen:
04:09 PM unterhausen:
04:09 PM unterhausen: XXCoder there used to be a lot of tracer machines, some people called them pantographs
04:09 PM unterhausen: that was weird, sorry
04:09 PM XXCoder: rose machine
04:09 PM XXCoder: and no im not talking about rose machine :)
04:09 PM unterhausen: I think my lunch got stuck in my keyboard again
04:10 PM XXCoder: im talking about how he has big model of what hes making, and he uses umm quill id say I guess, to control machine to cut and make part at scale
04:10 PM unterhausen: is it a modified machine?
04:10 PM XXCoder: no idea
04:11 PM roycroft: do you have a cat, unterhausen?
04:11 PM roycroft: you can answer yes, even if you don't
04:11 PM roycroft: because then we can blame that on your cat
04:11 PM unterhausen: ghost cat, no doubt
04:12 PM unterhausen: I thought about getting one of the hydraulically controlled BP tracer variants but sanity prevailed
04:14 PM unterhausen: that hand turned lathe is pretty neat, but I don't understand where the motion that makes the pattern is coming from
04:14 PM XXCoder: oh look up rose machine
04:15 PM XXCoder: in youtube, theres great videos explaining how it works
04:15 PM unterhausen: you can see the pattern wheel at 13:13
04:16 PM roycroft: the spindle moves laterally, unterhausen
04:16 PM XXCoder: yup. one in that video is small one
04:16 PM XXCoder: but theres much larger ones, and theres one thats 3d printed pattern wheels
04:17 PM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmDqBDoYQ_U
04:17 PM XXCoder: near end you can see how it works easily
04:49 PM JT-Shop: looks like two starlink spacex launches have been delayed for some reason
04:50 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, bridgeport made a tracer
04:50 PM Tom_L: it's similar to that
04:50 PM XXCoder: oh interesting'
04:51 PM Tom_L: there were mechanical ones too
04:51 PM Tom_L: you could set the scale on the arms
04:51 PM JT-Shop: https://www.space.com/spacex-starlink-internet-satellites-lasers-launch
04:52 PM XXCoder: space lasers for domination?
04:52 PM Tom_L: https://www.ebay.com/b/Pantograph-Engraving-Machines/bn_7024771501
04:54 PM Tom_L: i knew a guy that had one that made plaques
04:54 PM Tom_L: also roll stamps etc
04:54 PM Tom_L: it had a rotary attachment
04:54 PM XXCoder: interesting
04:54 PM XXCoder: i guess its bit more obscure nowdays due to cnc
04:55 PM JT-Shop: glad I got Rusty back in the shop before the rain started so I can finish getting it ready for it's new owner
04:55 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZdqCbHbdvQ
04:55 PM Tom_L: a simple one
04:56 PM XXCoder: wow jet fuel made from electrified co2
04:56 PM XXCoder: other than power generation which can be by solar, zero net emission
04:56 PM XXCoder: https://interestingengineering.com/a-new-jet-fuel-made-from-electrified-co2-is-emissions-free?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=article&utm_content=20102021
05:03 PM JT-Shop: trying to make sure my neighbors daughter has a good vehicle to drive, she was into drugs for quite some time and has turned her life around, works for a local vet and lives with her mom now.
05:03 PM Tom_L: you're a good neighbor
05:04 PM JT-Shop: gotta stop working on Rusty and send it over lol
05:04 PM JT-Shop: she has been a good friend and we watch each other's back when it comes to predators etc
05:05 PM JT-Shop: she came real close to dying about 6-9 months ago
05:06 PM JT-Shop: finally figured out what the issue was with the brakes pulling to the left, the right front hose was blocked
05:06 PM Tom_L: you mentioned she was having problems
05:06 PM JT-Shop: when I was bleeding the brakes after replacing the calipers, rotors and pads something was not right with the right front
05:07 PM Tom_L: rust?
05:07 PM JT-Shop: aye she was into drugs for a number of years, I think the brush with death opened her eyes
05:08 PM JT-Shop: rubber inside the hose deteriorating then plugging the hole in the banjo fitting
05:08 PM Tom_L: ahh
05:08 PM Tom_L: drum or disk?
05:08 PM Tom_L: probably got into the caliper too
05:08 PM JT-Shop: disk all around
05:09 PM JT-Shop: Rusty has new calipers, rotors and pads all around
05:09 PM JT-Shop: new battery and starter back in February in a blizzard lol
05:10 PM JT-Shop: all new tires this year... the list goes on
05:10 PM Tom_L: how's the drive train?
05:10 PM JT-Shop: everything works great, 2, 4, 4 low all work
05:11 PM Tom_L: instead of trading an old impalla i gave it to my niece. it was worth alot more to her than the dealer and she's still driving it
05:11 PM JT-Shop: only thing is the *&%%% rats chewed through the knock sensor wires again
05:11 PM Tom_L: when i got the hondas...
05:11 PM Tom_L: that could happen next door too...
05:11 PM JT-Shop: I don't mind helping people that help themselves and work
05:11 PM Tom_L: she'll have to watch that
05:12 PM JT-Shop: right now she has opossum problems
05:12 PM JT-Shop: she has killed 4 so far
05:12 PM Tom_L: quite a few
05:13 PM Tom_L: i see one here every now and then but it's more rare in the city
05:13 PM JT-Shop: her chicken yard is not as secure as mine but she has been making improvements over the last few years as I point them out
05:14 PM JT-Shop: changed the oil and air filter today
05:15 PM XXCoder: isnt opossum good for getting rid of ticks
05:18 PM JT-Shop: guinea eat ticks opossum eat eggs
05:19 PM XXCoder: opossums actually eat ticks also
05:20 PM XXCoder: list is frogs, lizards, chickens, squarrels, opossums, guineafowl, wild turkeys, and ant/fire ants
05:20 PM JT-Shop: I don't see how they could, have you seen their mouth
05:20 PM JT-Shop: ants I could see
05:21 PM XXCoder: https://tickcontrol.com/blog/animals-that-help-with-tick-control/
05:21 PM JT-Shop: chickens won't bother with a tick
05:22 PM JT-Shop: looks like a lot of bs to me and a site for a tick control companty
05:22 PM XXCoder: honestly it was just first link
05:22 PM JT-Shop: guinea is know to eat ticks but no other fowl
05:25 PM XXCoder: https://www.newstimes.com/news/article/Robert-Miller-Opossums-killers-of-ticks-5413872.php
05:25 PM XXCoder: more crediable
05:26 PM JT-Shop: got an email from AD that the rest of my components for the second copy lathe should ship mid November
05:26 PM Tom_L: nice
05:26 PM XXCoder: awesome
05:27 PM Tom_L: not like normal but better than not at all i suppose
05:27 PM Tom_L: gas went up another dime here yesterday
05:27 PM JT-Shop: Extrapolating from their findings, Ostfeld said, the team estimated that in one season, an opossum can kill about 5,000 ticks.
05:28 PM JT-Shop: that's nothing lol
05:28 PM JT-Shop: gas up and down and back up here $3 today when I filled Rusty up
05:28 PM Tom_L: i hope gecko ships better than they reply to email
05:28 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:29 PM Tom_L: maybe money talks?
05:29 PM JT-Shop: so you could just plug in the divider head with power off?
05:29 PM Tom_L: i'm hoping to
05:30 PM JT-Shop: mount the gecko on the divider head?
05:30 PM Tom_L: i might add a switch on that enable line
05:30 PM Tom_L: no it's in the cabinet
05:30 PM Tom_L: or will be
05:30 PM XXCoder: jt probably. though they definitely do eat em, like I said :)
05:30 PM JT-Shop: just a thought
05:30 PM Tom_L: yeah that would expose it to chips, colant and who knows what else
05:31 PM JT-Shop: http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/blog/opossumteeth.jpg
05:31 PM JT-Shop: brain the size of a quarter
05:32 PM JT-Shop: put in a sealed box... with two wires one for step/direction and one for power
05:33 PM Tom_L: it's a thought
05:34 PM JT-Shop: so when you need to use it just plug it in and fire up
05:34 PM Tom_L: i got most of the cabinet wired for it now though
05:34 PM Tom_L: i'm wondering how commercial machines do it
05:34 PM JT-Shop: with USPS delays you have time to rethink it lol
05:34 PM Tom_L: i know my bud's fadal had just the rotary exposed
05:34 PM JT-Shop: the ones I saw just plug in
05:39 PM Tom_L: i don't have a post for the rotary but my software is supposed to support indexing only on them
05:39 PM Tom_L: well i have posts for them but nothing i've tested
05:41 PM JT-Shop: indexing should be pretty straight forward
05:41 PM Tom_L: i would think so
05:42 PM Tom_L: i've never tried programming a rotary with it
05:42 PM Tom_L: one of the other guys there did
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I discovered a flaw in my plan for the spoke lathe that will set me back a bit while I sort that out :(
05:43 PM Tom_L: what happened?
05:43 PM Tom_L: will this show up on the first one too?
05:43 PM JT-Shop: I changed to holding the blank from the end but forgot to make clearance for the holding parts
05:44 PM JT-Shop: no, the first one is very different
05:44 PM Tom_L: ... spoke, not copy... i misread that
05:45 PM JT-Shop: so I have to modify the magazine supports to give clearance for the grippers
05:48 PM Tom_L: fadal uses M61 M60 for rotary brake on this one
05:50 PM JT-Shop: hmm I think I have a fairly easy fix for the snafu
05:50 PM JT-Shop: actually I see a couple of options for a fix
05:51 PM XXCoder: more options is good
05:51 PM XXCoder: better chance to find good soluiton
05:51 PM JT-Shop: I like option #B
05:53 PM JT-Shop: chow time...
07:16 PM roycroft: i has been jabbed again!
07:16 PM XXCoder: uhoh you need armor
07:17 PM XXCoder: ;)
07:17 PM XXCoder: way to go though
07:17 PM roycroft: the clinic was really crazy, too
07:18 PM roycroft: it was by appointment only, but there were a heap of people coming in without appointments demanding a booster for their j&j vaccine
07:18 PM roycroft: the feds just approved the j&j booster this afternoon
07:18 PM XXCoder: interesting
07:18 PM roycroft: the state and county have not had time to approve it yet
07:18 PM XXCoder: any news on modernia?
07:18 PM roycroft: and besides, this was a pfizer booster today
07:18 PM XXCoder: seems that one dont need booster so far?
07:18 PM roycroft: yes, it's going to be recommended for a booster soon
07:19 PM roycroft: anyway, one of the people was almost screaming that she has only had one jab, and she should get priority over all the people who have had two already
07:20 PM roycroft: and the poor health department workers were trying to explain that they could not give the booster to j&j people, no matter what the circumstances
07:20 PM roycroft: they were trying to be helpful, but it almost turned panicky in there
07:22 PM roycroft: i wasn't even aware at first that the j&j booster had been approved - it must have happened after i left
07:25 PM roycroft: anyway, i got it, and i'm not dead yet
07:26 PM roycroft: and this is no fun
07:26 PM roycroft: i just got a relay hat for my pi, but the standoffs that came with it are a different thread than the din rail pi mount
07:27 PM roycroft: i'm going to have to do something to make it work - i hope i can just retap the holes in the din mount
07:33 PM skunkworks: I had created a jackshaft for a go-cart I bought in my 20's.. Machined the 2 gear sprocket on the k&t... I forgot to take a picture - but that was 30 ish years ago. I think it is time to make a new sprocket..
07:34 PM skunkworks: My 8 year old daughter is have a big time running it... Pedal to the metal
07:34 PM roycroft: and i do not have an m2.5 tap, and have a feeling i might not find one locally
07:56 PM Loetmichel_ is now known as Loetmichel
08:50 PM roycroft: oh, the moderna booster was approved today along with the j&j
08:50 PM roycroft: by the fda
08:50 PM roycroft: so local authorities will probably approve it within the next few days
08:51 PM XXCoder: it say for what age range?
08:52 PM roycroft: 65 and up for now, plus others who are immunocompromised or have other medical conditions
08:52 PM roycroft: but the booster will probably be approved for those 40 and up soon
08:52 PM roycroft: i think this is because of what i dealt with today
08:53 PM roycroft: people panicking and overwhelming the clinics
11:37 PM roycroft: huanyang just emailed me about the 2.2kw refurbished vfd that i ordered
11:38 PM roycroft: they said that they are out of stock, and asked if a brand new 4kw unit would be an acceptable substitute, at no extra cost
11:38 PM XXCoder: hmm ok
11:38 PM roycroft: i'm thinking that would be acceptable
11:38 PM XXCoder: not bad
11:39 PM roycroft: yeah, they get $198 for that
11:39 PM roycroft: and i paid $114 for the refurbished smaller one
11:40 PM roycroft: they also said that, because of the delay, they would ship it from their us warehouse instead of from china, so it will arrive sooner
11:42 PM roycroft: matt cremona just posted his first video in a while
11:42 PM roycroft: he's sawing a gigantic sugar maple log
11:42 PM roycroft: er, silver maple
11:43 PM roycroft: no, this is a sugar maple
11:43 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqcYUMcgaRY
11:47 PM XXCoder: wpw big one
11:47 PM XXCoder: he has interesting machine
11:48 PM XXCoder: he neds to wear a goggkle
11:59 PM roycroft: he built that mill
