12:08 AM XXCoder: tiwake[m]: https://youtu.be/QY9R-2KotV4
01:15 AM Deejay: moin
02:08 AM randy: morning
04:55 AM JT-Cave-: morning
04:56 AM XXCoder: o/
07:02 AM unterhausen: woodcraft sent everyone on their email list a coupon for their portland store. Too bad it's 2700 miles from here
07:02 AM unterhausen: all of my computers are too old to run win 11
07:39 AM Tom_L: morning
10:14 AM JT-MachineShop: yo
10:15 AM Tom_L: what's up
10:15 AM Tom_L: you started another copy lathe yet?
10:15 AM roycroft: huanyang got back to me and told me their "slightly used" vfds that they sell on amazon are mostly brand new, but returned by customers who ordered the wrong thing, and come with a full warranty
10:15 AM roycroft: so now their vfds are really really cheap :)
10:15 AM Tom_L: get a spare :)
10:16 AM roycroft: i shall, as soon as i get enough for current projects
10:16 AM roycroft: i just ordered one for my mill
10:17 AM roycroft: i usually have a spare, but had to use the spare when my belt grinder motor died and took the vfd out with it
10:17 AM Tom_L: what size is it?
10:18 AM roycroft: 2.2kw
10:18 AM Tom_L: mains or 220v?
10:18 AM roycroft: 220v
10:18 AM Tom_L: 1.5kw is probably max for 120v
10:18 AM roycroft: it's for a 2hp motor, but i always get a vfd rated for 1hp more than the motor i'm driving with it
10:19 AM roycroft: my belt grinder has a 3hp motor, so it has a 3kw vfd
10:20 AM roycroft: which is the size of the spare that i'll get when i get another spare
10:20 AM JT-MachineShop: I ordered the parts for the copy lathe yesterday, should have them all by November
10:21 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/mount/Rotary_mount7.jpg
10:21 AM roycroft: did you get the dxf file i sent you, jt-machineshop?
10:21 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/mount/Rotary_mount5.jpg
10:21 AM Tom_L: cut that last evening
10:21 AM Tom_L: guess we pissed him off :)
10:21 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:21 AM roycroft: it would appear so
10:22 AM JT-Shop: yep, and OneCNC even plays nice with it...
10:22 AM roycroft: cool
10:23 AM roycroft: so amazon just offered me two shipping options: free shipping (arrives october 29 - november 5), and free shipping (arrives november 10 - november 25)
10:23 AM Tom_L: heh
10:29 AM Tom_L: those take hall feedback from the motor?
10:29 AM roycroft: i'm not sure
10:33 AM Rab: roycroft, got a URL for slightly used huanyang? Or want to keep it close to the vest until you've ordered what you need? ;)
10:35 AM roycroft: i just go to amazon.com (using my business account) and search for huanyang vfd
10:36 AM roycroft: when i find the model i want, i look at "other buying options" or whatever they call it
10:36 AM roycroft: and if there are "slightly used" ones they will be there
10:36 AM Rab: Ah, got it.
10:36 AM roycroft: they are sold by huanyang themselves, but dispatched by amazon
10:36 AM roycroft: the one i just bought cost $114 and change
10:37 AM roycroft: which is a pretty good price
10:37 AM Rab: OK. I'm generally cautious about used Amazon stuff when I think Amazon does the return QC.
10:37 AM Rab: $114 is pretty good.
10:37 AM roycroft: sure, and that's why i wrote huanyang about it
10:37 AM roycroft: and they responded that it has the same warranty as the new ones
10:38 AM roycroft: but i'll certainly test this one the day i get it
10:38 AM roycroft: so it can go back if there are any issues
10:38 AM roycroft: the way i see it, and i could be wrong, is that it either comes with or without the blue smoke
10:39 AM roycroft: and as long as the blue smoke is there, it should work fine
10:39 AM Tom_L: they show a 2.2kw 3hp 110v one as well
10:39 AM roycroft: yes
10:39 AM roycroft: but who would ever get that?
10:39 AM roycroft: it would require a 30a circuit
10:39 AM Tom_L: my 1.2 is 110v
10:39 AM roycroft: they probably have lots of returns on those
10:39 AM Tom_L: but that's within reason
10:40 AM Rab: Perfectly reasonable if you're derating 50%.
10:41 AM Tom_L: what is vector control?
10:41 AM roycroft: i've never used a huanyang other than stand-alone, but lots of folks control them with linuxcnc via the rs485 interface
10:41 AM roycroft: i'll be doing that shortly
10:41 AM roycroft: for what they are, they seem to be pretty decent vfds
10:42 AM roycroft: about 1/4 the cost of a us or european made one
10:42 AM roycroft: but they still work fine
10:43 AM roycroft: the issue is that there are a lot of huanyang clones that look almost exactly like the real thing
10:43 AM roycroft: but i figure that if i'm buying from huanyang it's probably the genuine article
10:43 AM Tom_L: i would hope so
10:45 AM roycroft: there's a 24 output on the vfd - i need to determine when that's live
10:46 AM roycroft: it would be nice if i can use it for my "spindle running" indicator
10:46 AM Tom_L: enable would do that
10:46 AM Tom_L: well, maybe not 'running' but alive
10:52 AM roycroft: i've been studying, learning about, and playing with linuxcnc in simulation/demo mode for over a decade now, but i've not yet built a machine that is run by linuxcnc
10:53 AM roycroft: this router build i'm doing will be my first one, and i expect that as i build/configure it a lot of how linuxcnc works will make a lot more sense to me
10:53 AM roycroft: so maybe i'll stop asking so many stupid questions before long :)
10:53 AM Loetmichel: roycroft: VFDs usually have a low power 24V supply for some sensors/actors. usually only a few 100mA if that though.
10:54 AM roycroft: i just need to power some leds, and i think they only use a couple hundred ma, so it might be fine
10:56 AM roycroft: but if not, i could use it to control a relay that will power the led
10:57 AM roycroft: since i'll be using the two speed transmission in the mill power train, i might want to install a hall sensor on the spindle itself when it comes time to run it with linuxcnc
10:57 AM roycroft: the motor speed does not matter - it's the spindle speed i care about
10:58 AM Tom_L: trying to find what i used for my cycle times
10:59 AM Tom_L: inverted halui.program.is-idle
11:00 AM Tom_L: so that should cover both spindle and drives
11:20 AM JT-Cave-: roycroft, https://github.com/jethornton/rpi_gpio
11:21 AM JT-Cave-: lunch minute it up...
11:21 AM roycroft: thanks, jt-cave-
11:22 AM roycroft: if i don't go work on the country fair bod election after work today, i plan on wiring up the low voltage portion of my cnc router controller, and the pi will be back online
11:22 AM roycroft: i'll be able to test accessing the gpio pins then
11:23 AM roycroft: i don't have the stack light tree yet, nor any 24v relays, but i can see the status of the pins in linuxcnc, and i can put some leds on a breadboard to confirm that it's working
11:24 AM roycroft: i got the din rail mount for the pi at mcmaster, btw
11:24 AM roycroft: sometimes it surprises me what they carry
11:34 AM roycroft: and i was just informed there aren't many new ballots returned since last weekend, so i won't be doing any elections work today
11:34 AM roycroft: so i guess i'll be doing linuxcnc work today
11:54 AM perry_j1987: morning all
11:55 AM perry_j1987: i got stuck in Vegas flight canceled during that big wind storm the other day there
12:26 PM satiowadahc[m]: Snow on the ground here today... assuming all flights will be temporarily cancelled
01:01 PM Tom_L: where is here?
01:03 PM satiowadahc[m]: Canadian prairies
01:07 PM perry_j1987: there was snow in the mountains outside of Vegas
01:11 PM roycroft: i've not seen snow in the foothills here yet, but it will be there soon
01:12 PM satiowadahc[m]: Definitely not ready for this... I need to move south
01:16 PM roycroft: the snow level is actually up to 2000m now
01:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: that is some pretty deep snow
01:57 PM pere: where I live, we call them glaciers. :)
03:14 PM roycroft: so i've been reading that we're having another toilet paper shortage, and when i went to market at lunch time i found it is true
03:14 PM roycroft: i managed to get some, but the tp aisle was almost completely empty
03:14 PM roycroft: i guess it's time to stock up again
03:47 PM roycroft: the huanyang does have a hal sensor circuit
03:48 PM roycroft: hall
04:08 PM satiowadahc[m]: I mean could be hal if you connect it right to :P
04:10 PM roycroft: that would be with the rs485 interface
04:10 PM roycroft: which i already knew it had
04:10 PM roycroft: tom_l was asking about a hall sensor input earlier
04:20 PM unterhausen: the hall inputs maybe for the high speed motors?
04:21 PM unterhausen: I have a vfd that only works on motors with feedback. Not sure why I bought it
04:23 PM roycroft: perhaps
04:23 PM roycroft: i don't know why he asked
04:24 PM roycroft: i don't need that feature at the moment
04:24 PM roycroft: although it may be useful for my cnc router, as it will have a high speed spindle and will tend to bog down under load
04:25 PM XXCoder: fewer flutes?
04:31 PM roycroft: i'm thinking more about when using large diameter cutters
04:32 PM roycroft: when i'm using the overhead spindle with small cutters i don't anticipate any load problems, unless i'm trying to move the spindle wicked fast
04:33 PM roycroft: i like to use fender-style jewel lamps as mains power indicators on my machines
04:34 PM roycroft: my source for lamp holders for those is out, and he does not know when or if he'll get more
04:34 PM roycroft: all the other ones i find are only rated at 120v
04:34 PM roycroft: the ones i had been getting were rated at 240v
04:34 PM roycroft: which is what i need
04:35 PM roycroft: even the ones i'm finding from vendors in the uk are only rated at 120v
04:35 PM XXCoder: might end up having to get it from countries with 240v
04:36 PM roycroft: i'm trying
04:36 PM roycroft: and if i ever find any i'll get like a dozen
04:37 PM roycroft: more than i anticipate ever needing
04:37 PM roycroft: the 120v rated ones may work fine, but i don't want to chance it
04:37 PM roycroft: they're rated for 75w, and i'll be using an led lamp, so maybe 1w
04:38 PM roycroft: but if they're not tested for voltage leak at 240v it could be a problem
04:38 PM roycroft: i'd say there's a 95% chance that the 120v ones would work fine at 240v
04:38 PM roycroft: but that other 5% bothers me
04:53 PM JT-Shop: I did manage to get the material with two parallel edges so I can put it in the vises on the VMC
04:53 PM JT-Shop: but I'm just plain whipped out today
04:56 PM XXCoder: btw guys if you have account at thingverse, change your password now
04:56 PM XXCoder: they had massive leak
04:56 PM XXCoder: unsalted password hashes, which means crackable
04:59 PM roycroft: thanks, xxcoder
04:59 PM XXCoder: welcome
04:59 PM roycroft: i'm not terribly concerned about my thingiverse account being hacked, but it's probably best to reset anyway
05:00 PM XXCoder: same for me
05:01 PM roycroft: oh, it looks like i got lucky
05:01 PM roycroft: huanyang actually have two series of vfds - hy and gt
05:02 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:02 PM roycroft: the hy are what i've been getting, but the one i just ordered is a gt
05:02 PM roycroft: and i just read that the hy are for high speed spindle control such as on my router, and the gt are better for lathes and mills, as they offer high torque at low frequencies
05:02 PM roycroft: so that's perfect for my mill
05:05 PM JT-Shop: thanks Rolf
05:05 PM XXCoder: welcome
05:07 PM solarwind: So apparently weg's synchronous AC motors aren't certified to use in Canada. Anyone know of another manufacturer I can talk to?
05:08 PM solarwind: I have to install some in a bunch of air compressors, but I can't have any trouble with "certification" if they're inspected
05:08 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/mount/Rotary_mount9.jpg
05:08 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/rotary/mount/Rotary_mount12.jpg
05:08 PM solarwind: These are in the ~75kW power range
05:08 PM XXCoder: nice
05:08 PM JT-Shop: wow I'm using $4,000 worth of parts off MY shelf for this job.
05:09 PM Tom_L: hope you're getting paid for em
05:09 PM JT-Shop: that's giving them 25% discount
05:09 PM JT-Shop: yep, they will pay
05:09 PM Tom_L: now i gotta wait for another driver
05:09 PM XXCoder: spring coupler wouldnt that have bit backlash?
05:09 PM Tom_L: only one i had on hand that size
05:10 PM XXCoder: from what it looks it dont seem to be major factor
05:10 PM Tom_L: it was fun drilling/reaming that with the spring
05:11 PM JT-Shop: that looks more sensible than the first design
05:12 PM Tom_L: yeah alot easier to make
05:12 PM Tom_L: couldn't find any round bar for standoffs so i radius'd one corner of the square
05:13 PM JT-Shop: looks cool
05:13 PM JT-Shop: different size shafts?
05:13 PM Tom_L: 1/4 and 14mm
05:14 PM Tom_L: i tried to bore it out from .500 cause i don't have a bigger drill and that didn't work because of the spring
05:15 PM Tom_L: so i took .050ish off with the reamer really slow
05:15 PM Tom_L: worked good but i generally don't like taking that much with a reamer
05:15 PM Tom_L: i kept waiting for the spring to snap
05:17 PM JT-Shop: no collet big enough to hold the od?
05:17 PM Tom_L: no all i have is a 4jaw
05:18 PM JT-Shop: that's all I use on the Samson is a 4 jaw
05:19 PM JT-Shop: well I have a 5C collet chuck that I can put in the 4 jaw
05:19 PM Tom_L: so i took .500 square down to .375 and radius'd the edge
05:19 PM Tom_L: i needed an excuse to use the radius cutters anyway, i don't use them that much
05:21 PM JT-Shop: I have a ton of 1/2" square 6061 ordered by accident lol
05:21 PM Tom_L: heh
05:21 PM Tom_L: usually the scrap has 3/8 round but not this time
05:37 PM JT-Shop: my deer buddy has other things on his mind at the moment, neighbor saw him chasing some females yesterday
07:31 PM XXCoder: yay new myfordboy
07:35 PM XXCoder: he sure have fun with 3d printer
07:36 PM XXCoder: wow one of very rare videos starring mrs myfordboy
07:52 PM roycroft: i got the low voltage power supplies wired up for my cnc router controller today
07:52 PM roycroft: the next step requires a relay that is not due to arrive until saturday
