12:00 AM norias: or write gcode by hand?
12:07 AM XXCoder: so far, neither lol
12:07 AM XXCoder: last job, i just use gcode by cam guy
12:07 AM XXCoder: home hobby stalled before i needed it seriously
12:07 AM XXCoder: i did write gcode by hand, using cut and paste to make 9 fixture version out of old 2 fixture version
12:07 AM norias: ah
12:07 AM XXCoder: edited a bunch
12:07 AM norias: get fusion360 and run linuxcnc in simulator mode
12:07 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: I told him $40K+ because I knew that was the cheapest end,
12:07 AM norias: that'd help you practice
12:07 AM XXCoder: i cant run fusion360
12:07 AM norias: why?
12:07 AM XXCoder: and yeah i built my own simulator. you can install it since its included now
12:07 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: I've been running ectric Aspire via Wine on my linux machine. LOL
12:07 AM XXCoder: look for 3axis_tutorial if 2.8 or newer, or rolfmill if 2.7
12:07 AM XXCoder: bleep nice. unfortunately fusion says nope to vm
12:07 AM XXCoder: and wine cant run it
12:07 AM norias: i have fusion on a VM
12:07 AM Bleepshop: Vectric
12:07 AM XXCoder: really? which vm again?
12:07 AM miss0r2: mornin'
01:33 AM Deejay: moin
02:01 AM Bleepshop: Eek! It is morning. Time for me to go fall over...
02:01 AM XXCoder: have a good and safe fallover
02:03 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Well I'm not planning to do it on the salvage firewood pile, the rusty scrap metal pile or the cat. So I should be OK. LOL
02:03 AM XXCoder: lol
05:02 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:04 AM XXCoder: yo
08:22 AM solarwind: Hydraulic fittings are usually made from 12L14 yeah?
08:23 AM solarwind: Or is there a way to know?
08:23 AM solarwind: I need to TIG weld some together for low pressure (vacuum pump) application just to be 100% sure there's no leak
08:24 AM solarwind: I know you can TIG weld 12L14, but I want to make sure that's what it is before I buy some bar stock to practice on first
09:42 AM CloudEvil: Are you caring about 'no leak' using a PSI guage, or a residual gas analyser?
09:59 AM roguish[m]: JT-Cave: JT-Shop just used the gcode screen. for facing....
10:12 AM roycroft: we have rain in the forecast for the end of the week
10:12 AM roycroft: this would be the first rain since before memorial day
10:59 AM unterhaus: my wife thinks I should move my stuff out of the way and let her park in the garage
10:59 AM unterhaus: selfish
11:42 AM cradek: silly, cars don't go inside the house
11:45 AM cradek: I mean I want a tree in the living room but I can't have that either
11:51 AM roycroft: well you could put a tree in your living room if you really wanted to
11:51 AM roycroft: you could also put your living room in a tree if you wanted to
11:52 AM * roycroft does not see how trees and living rooms are mutually exclusive, but does understand how cars and shops can be
11:56 AM JT-Cave: roguish[m], cool
11:57 AM JT-Cave: yippie the dro board is here I think
12:01 PM CloudEvil: https://www.nhyenaflix.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=647949
12:01 PM CloudEvil: roycroft:
12:30 PM roycroft: that link just hangs, cloudevil - i've tried loading it three times
12:31 PM CloudEvil: hmm. It's a model T rebuilt into a sawmill
12:31 PM roycroft: that sounds cool
12:39 PM roycroft: saw stop seem confused
12:40 PM roycroft: i wrote them with some questions about their cast iron router table top, explaining that i was looking to incorporate one in my over/under cnc router, and they responded by telling me they need the serial number
12:40 PM roycroft: i wrote again explaining that this is a pre-sales question, and that i don't have the product yet, and they responded again telling me they would be happy to answer my questions but they needed the serial number first
12:41 PM roycroft: i'm not sure that an accessory item like that even has a serial number
12:41 PM roycroft: perhaps i should make one up :)
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: week 5: tastes and smells are returning, have energy back
12:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sam posted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW1GGI55Epc
01:01 PM roycroft: good news, capthindsight[m]
01:07 PM unterhaus: I think they wanted your saw's serial number. Centroid doesn't even respond to emails without a serial number. Not even to tell you they won't help without a serial number
01:08 PM unterhaus: I had the serial number of a centroid control, but didn't know until later that's why they didn't answer
01:08 PM unterhaus: funny thing is, they are local
01:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: would not pass the sommelier test however :)
01:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unterhaus: is their software easily hacked?
01:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: DRM bypassed or broken
01:10 PM roycroft: yes, they want the saw's serial number, i'm sure
01:11 PM roycroft: or the router table's serial number - they do sell a stand-alone router table with that top
01:11 PM unterhaus: I paid so little for the control that I decided it wasn't worth dealing with once I learned about EMC
01:12 PM roycroft: i mayhave to just buy thing thing and take the measurements myself
01:12 PM unterhaus: I may have finally discarded it
01:12 PM unterhaus: I think sawstop tables are a weird size
01:12 PM roycroft: but i 1. do not want to tie up $500 until i need to, and more importantly, 2. do not want to have to store the table until i need it
01:12 PM unterhaus: or you are making a freestanding table?
01:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I see discussions on the CNC reddit forums about Centroid and Mach
01:12 PM roycroft: i'm working on a design for an over/under cnc router
01:12 PM unterhaus: Centroid changed a lot since then
01:13 PM roycroft: and i want a cast iron table for the underside spindle
01:13 PM roycroft: the sawstop one looks perfect
01:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: my table saw has square corners, the 3" wings have rounded corners
01:13 PM unterhaus: they got into consumer level cnc about 10 years ago
01:13 PM roycroft: the one i'm looking at has square corners in the rear and radiused corners in the front
01:13 PM roycroft: i'd prefer square corners all around, but i could work with that
01:14 PM unterhaus: I missed when they started using mach, but it's not a surprise
01:14 PM roycroft: what i really need right now are the locations of the mounting screw holes, and the thickness of the casting at each mounting hole locatin
01:14 PM unterhaus: I would guess it doesn't have holes
01:15 PM roycroft: it does
01:15 PM roycroft: well, not through holes
01:15 PM unterhaus: That seems like a mistake on their part
01:15 PM roycroft: but there are threaded mounting holes on the underside of the casting
01:15 PM roycroft: to mount it to the table saw frame or router stand frame
01:15 PM roycroft: there are also threaded holes on the sides for mounting the fence
01:16 PM unterhaus: tablesaw frames are front and back, theirs must be weird
01:16 PM unterhaus: even though it's a 5th generation bessemier clone
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is there a well designed media pickup/siphon tube for the small media blast cabinets?
01:18 PM roycroft: https://www.sawstop.com/images/uploads/manuals/M_RT-FS_RT-PHFS.pdf
01:18 PM roycroft: page 17 of that manual shows a diagram of the underside
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/8mtciYrkBOg?t=1138 moderate improvement
01:18 PM unterhaus: I see the holes now, it also works on the contractors saw
01:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or doos I gotta do it mineself?
01:19 PM roycroft: i would build a frame for that to sit on
01:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: that has a pretty small radiused corner, mine are like 3 inch (76mm)
01:20 PM roycroft: yeah, that's about a 1" radius or so
01:20 PM roycroft: maybe 3/4"
01:21 PM roycroft: i'll be adding edging made of ash all around the router table
01:21 PM unterhaus: I was looking at bulldog router extensions and the rounded corners on that didn't bother me, but the rounded corners of the saw wing bothered me a lot
01:21 PM roycroft: i can just make the front piece wider and have it match the radius
01:22 PM unterhaus: on my powermatic, the wings have 4 square corners
01:22 PM unterhaus: or rather, the one wing has 4, the other has 2 rounded
01:22 PM roycroft: i want a footprint for the overhead cnc part to be 24"x48" at least
01:22 PM roycroft: the sawstop is 32" wide, which is nice
01:23 PM roycroft: once i add the ash edging that should take it to about 38" wide or so
01:23 PM roycroft: and if i mount the gantry rails on the outside of that there should be plenty of room to get 24" of x travel
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: was wonder why you'd use fly ash or similar for the edges then I realized ash wood
01:24 PM roycroft: it may also be an option to cut the sawstop table down to 30" wide
01:24 PM roycroft: which would elminate the radiused corners
01:25 PM roycroft: there's a second set of mounting pads a couple inches inside the ones on the edge
01:25 PM roycroft: and yeah, it would be fun to take a $500 very flat, nicely ground cast iron table and hack the ends off of it
01:27 PM roycroft: they do have a smaller one that's 27" wide
01:27 PM roycroft: it's a lot less expensive, and might work out
01:27 PM roycroft: it has some slots in it for a fence, though, and i'd rather not have those slots
01:32 PM roycroft: now that i think about it, the fence slots might be ueful
01:32 PM roycroft: useful
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: may go this route next https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EXNT-5o3q8
01:33 PM roycroft: the fence i would attach to the gantry for conventional router table work i could also attach directly to the table for a lot of work using those slots
01:33 PM roycroft: i do things on my router table all the time that require a fence but not the incremental positioning that the jig offers
01:35 PM roycroft: i rebuilt my hf blasting cabinet using standard pipe fittings such as in that video, capthindsight[m]
01:35 PM roycroft: it was an entirely new blasting cabinet after that
01:35 PM roycroft: i should have done it 20 years ago
01:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: what line pressure do you run for sand and similar media?
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I got mine years ago from Enco and wanted it turn key, should have returned it
01:44 PM unterhaus: I know a lot of people are buying cheap blast cabinets and upgrading them extensively right away
01:44 PM unterhaus: the way HF is being run now, they might do the upgrades themselves
01:45 PM unterhaus: the father got sidelined and the kids have made positive changes
01:45 PM unterhaus: I swear the father would tell factories that he didn't care, make it cheaper
01:51 PM roycroft: i usually run it at about 90psi
01:52 PM roycroft: and i use aluminium oxide as the blasting medium most of the time
01:53 PM roycroft: over the last 20 years, i've replaced the pickup tube in that blasting cabinet at least a half dozen times
01:53 PM roycroft: it was so nice just getting rid of that whole setup
01:55 PM roycroft: when i did the refurbishment i also lowered the screen on which the parts sit by a couple or three inches - that really makes things fit a lot better
01:55 PM roycroft: and i upgraded the blasting gun to this:
01:55 PM roycroft: https://www.ebay.com/itm/273870494550
01:56 PM roycroft: and while i was at it, i put a tee on the air inlet inside the cabinet, and added a short air hose/nozzle so i can blow the parts off before i remove them and, more importantly, can blow the blasting media off the cabinet door before i open it
01:56 PM roycroft: no more piles of media falling on the shop floor every time i open the door
01:58 PM roycroft: as well, when i disassembled it to refurbish it i remved the remnants of the foam sealing tape that was mostly ineffective after all these years, and used urethane caulk to seal all the components as i reassembled it - there's no media escaping the cabinet at all now
01:59 PM roycroft: oh, and i pulled out the crappy, dim flourescent light that was in it and replaced it with a couple bright led spotlights
02:02 PM t4nk_freenode: https://postimg.cc/gallery/TmXhwMB Tom_L ...
02:02 PM t4nk_freenode: I just couldn't resist and hád to put my machine to work
02:03 PM t4nk_freenode: I did the old front plate by hand, everything was crooked, and I wasn't able to tighten the bolts for it would run too heavy
02:04 PM t4nk_freenode: but it did let me make the new front plate...
02:05 PM t4nk_freenode: it was just awesome to have everything line up, really, really cool
02:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: since Sam proved that a harmonic drive gear may be FDM printed, i wonder how well a powder and resin binder print will turn out
02:16 PM unterhaus: one of the reasons I have never used the harmonic drives I got from my robot is because they look so wimpy
02:16 PM unterhaus: I'm more inspired to use them now
02:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.harmonicdrive.net/ 2 years ago at Fabtech I gave them a hard time about their prices for drives
02:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: funny they mentioned the olny way they could make them lower is by making polymer gears :)
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: might give them crap if I attend this year
02:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: need low cost powdered polymers
02:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: would need to EDM tooling for injection molding
02:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: all those teeth
02:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or powdered metal and with metal infusion
02:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.netflix.com/title/81199095 have not seen
02:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://mobile.twitter.com/CapitolPolice/status/1437423592480911369 I wonder what gave him away?
02:46 PM FinboySlick: CaptHindsight[m]: How come Stefan isn't on that show?
02:47 PM FinboySlick: Oh, it's about artistic stuff.
02:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: FinboySlick: a tech contest would not be subjective enough
02:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: makes a sheet metal box with square corners without a brake using only his hands and blood for lube
02:53 PM enleth: roycroft: half the stuff we all buy for the shop is in fact a starter parts kit to be immediately upgraded, that somehow got labeled as a complete product
03:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: HF = half finished
03:00 PM unterhaus: I had the crazy idea to turn an arduino cnc breakout board into an isolated 4 channel stepper driver
03:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but gloves and sand paper work right out of the box
03:01 PM unterhaus: last time I looked at the hf lathe, it wouldn't even be a good starting point for an actual lathe
03:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: same, looked at it for making small parts you'd typically turn on a swiss machine
03:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my blast cabinet is all molded plastic
03:04 PM CaptHindsight[m]: easy enough to liquid proof the doors for wet media use
03:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYtkOLj5_lk
03:19 PM roycroft: i consider most things from harbor freight that are not consumables to be "kits", not production-ready machines/tools
03:20 PM roycroft: their 4-1/2" angle grinders are consumables, btw
03:20 PM roycroft: they are always on sale for $13, and they work for a while before they don't
03:20 PM roycroft: i buy 2 or 3 at a go, and replenish stock when i run low
03:20 PM roycroft: i do treat them quite literally as consumables
03:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: same here, and Walmart's version used to be available at 2am, when they used to be 24/7
03:31 PM CloudEvil: Having an extra grinder with a different wheel on it can be so enormously handy too
03:32 PM roycroft: yes, that's why i buy multiples
03:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they wear out so quickly I use them just for cutting and sanding
03:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no grinding
03:32 PM roycroft: not only do i use one for a cutting wheel, one for a wire wheel, and one for a grinding wheel, i actually have multiple grinders with wire wheels - one for steel, one for brass, one for aluminium, one for stainless steel
03:32 PM roycroft: so i can just grab the appropriate one and not worry about cross-metal contamination
03:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: wore one out in half a day grinding
03:33 PM roycroft: you should have a 7" one for all-day grinding
03:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: overhead grinds
03:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: want a good upper body shoulder workout?
03:44 PM roycroft: build a grinding robot
03:45 PM roycroft: and i'm not talking about an elvis impersonator animatron
03:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I need the exercise
03:53 PM roycroft: i'm just saying that 7" grinders tend to hold up better than 4-1/2" grinders, regardless of whether they are from hf or not
03:54 PM roycroft: maybe a mirka 4-1/2" grinder can run 24/7
03:54 PM roycroft: i'm not about to drop $500 to find out :)
03:58 PM Tom_L: t4nk_freenode, nice
04:02 PM Nick-Shop: Is there any info on controlling a 12 station tool station on an Okuma Cadet lathe?
04:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://youtu.be/KahPvIV2wj8?t=392
04:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Nick-Shop: only generic tool changer discussions
04:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Nick-Shop: nothing Okuma Cadet specific
04:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/10-advanced-configuration/39686-lathe-turret-tool-changer
04:27 PM JT-Shop: my daughters are fixing to have a tropical storm roll over their heads north of Houston
04:58 PM Nick-Shop: Thanks for the info
05:30 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, saw that moving in from Corpus Christi
05:50 PM * JT-Shop takes another look at radar
05:53 PM JT-Shop: seems to be scattering to the east and getting weaker
06:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.wunderground.com/video/top-stories/nicholas-bringing-threat-of-flooding-rain
06:11 PM JT-Shop: LOL it doesn't take a whole lot of rain to make Houston flood
06:15 PM Tom_L: that might be the one that encouraged us to leave early
06:15 PM cradek: Houston famously has no zoning or land-use rules
06:16 PM cradek: if it floods you can float to safety by holding your bootstraps
06:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://imgur.com/a/EUon219 how much are these mills worth?
06:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Webb Champs are $10k new
06:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.ebay.com/itm/224552184633 leadscrews for mills
06:48 PM snakedLX is now known as snaked
06:54 PM roycroft: now the rain is due to arrive on friday
06:54 PM roycroft: timing is getting really tight
06:55 PM roycroft: i just finished staining what i think are the last boards i need for my gazebo
06:55 PM roycroft: i shall install them tomorrow
06:55 PM roycroft: if i am a board or two short, i'll need to buy more tomorrow, and i can stain one side then
06:55 PM roycroft: the other side on wednesday
06:55 PM roycroft: and install on thursday
06:55 PM roycroft: i'm trying to beat the rain
06:55 PM roycroft: so i don't have to do staining and the like indoors
07:02 PM Tom_L: always hated spraying laquer in high humiditi
07:02 PM Tom_L: sp?
07:02 PM Tom_L: :)
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah makes the finish cloudy if the surface dries before the solvents flash off
07:11 PM Tom_L: either use additive to slow it or if it wasn't too bad i'd mist thinner over it to let the solvents out
07:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: rattle can or with spray gun? If using a gun you can add Japan Drier to cure the oil based lacquer faster
07:12 PM Tom_L: gun
07:12 PM Tom_L: i don't do it anymore
07:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.sunnysidecorp.com/product.php?p=t&b=s&n=72416
07:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: using that today spraying suspension components
07:14 PM Tom_L: the early waterborne finishes were crap
09:00 PM unterhaus: there is an almost perfectly oval cloud passing over State College right now
09:01 PM unterhaus: I think it's aliens
09:05 PM roycroft: aliens are overrated
09:06 PM Contract_Pilot: I think Matt Did a Great Job.. https://youtu.be/6Vd0YmFl1mc
09:06 PM roycroft: they're just people, but from not here
09:08 PM roycroft: if being not local is special, then we should all move, constantly
09:09 PM roycroft: contract_pilot: i'm very much into right to repair, to a degree at least
09:09 PM roycroft: and i've not quantified the degree
09:09 PM Contract_Pilot is now known as Rhine_Labs
09:10 PM roycroft: but i'm more into cradle to grave ownership by manufacturers
09:10 PM roycroft: i think that would go a long way towards right to repair in a non-mandated way
09:10 PM Rhine_Labs: I like it when i get my name mentioned also LOL.
09:11 PM roycroft: you're so vain
09:11 PM Rhine_Labs: The letter I received fom my congresswoman.
09:11 PM roycroft: i bet you think this internet is about you
09:11 PM Rhine_Labs: I am older then the internet LOL
09:12 PM roycroft: so are many of us
09:12 PM roycroft: including all of us who get the reference
09:12 PM Rhine_Labs: I can see the tormach so was a good cleaning weekend.
09:19 PM XXCoder: rain friday finally actual rain
09:27 PM roycroft: yes, here too
09:28 PM roycroft: three months to late, but a day too soon
09:28 PM XXCoder: lol
09:28 PM XXCoder: i miss orginial season pattern of here
09:29 PM XXCoder: weather is already different fom 2013 when i moved north from vancouver to here
09:29 PM XXCoder: and thats just 8 years
09:31 PM roycroft: i'm trying to get my gazebo finished before the rain comes
09:31 PM roycroft: and thursday is pushing it
09:31 PM roycroft: but we need rain so desperately i won't complain whenever it arrives
09:32 PM XXCoder: i need to kill some more blackberry before then too
09:32 PM roycroft: if i have enough boards i'll finish it tomorrow
09:32 PM roycroft: if not, i'll have to buy a few more, and it will be friday before they're ready to install
09:33 PM roycroft: so the rain may literally be off by one day for me
09:33 PM roycroft: but if that's the case i'll deal with it
09:33 PM roycroft: i've been applying stain to the boards in my back yard
09:34 PM roycroft: if i'm a board or two short, i can stain them in my fabrication shop, and wait for the rain to be done to install them
09:34 PM roycroft: i'd just like to get it all done before the rain
09:34 PM XXCoder: keep in mind humidity might rise a day befoeew rain too
09:35 PM roycroft: yes
09:35 PM roycroft: and i can deal with that
09:35 PM roycroft: i don't mind installing when the stain is still a wee bit tacky
09:36 PM roycroft: it just needs to be not wet when the rain arrives
09:36 PM roycroft: or it needs to be coverered when the rain arrives
09:36 PM XXCoder: lol gonna love it when words align
09:38 PM roycroft: are you saying i'm a poet and i don't know it?
09:39 PM XXCoder: lol nah
09:53 PM roycroft: my over/under cnc router plans are coming along well
09:53 PM XXCoder: nice
09:54 PM XXCoder: pics when its done
09:59 PM roycroft: it will be a while before it's done
10:00 PM XXCoder: yeah
10:00 PM roycroft: i'll post drawings as they approach the final versions, though
10:03 PM XXCoder: awesome
