01:42 AM Deejay: moin
04:05 AM Tom_L: morning
04:07 AM XXCoder: lo
04:59 AM XXCoder: JT-Shop: might be interested on this vbidep. at this time https://youtu.be/OLxDD1xsjHw?t=829
04:59 AM XXCoder: he designs a universal clamper since he needs to clamp parts in such a complex way
04:59 AM XXCoder: its large 33 min video if you watch whole thing
05:00 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:00 AM XXCoder: yo
05:00 AM XXCoder: check out the video
05:01 AM XXCoder: the time i linked to is start of complex clamp table. engineering part
05:45 AM JT-Cave: I wish he had shown the part in the table at the end
05:46 AM XXCoder: he does on part 2
05:46 AM XXCoder: he slowly assembles entire painting in it
05:46 AM XXCoder: and man it waves a lot. no wodner he built such a complex table
05:46 AM XXCoder: he fixes problems on third part.
05:47 AM XXCoder: problem is painting is on varying thickness. which varies respond to varying humidity. thats why it broke apart
05:47 AM XXCoder: (thickness of wood backing)
05:48 AM XXCoder: he talks a lot sometimes
05:51 AM XXCoder: oh boy third part he talks way more than his usual
06:47 AM JT-Cave: I need to get my camera server back up and running, using a browser is a pia
07:20 AM XXCoder: camera server for shop cameras etc?
07:21 AM JT-Cave: yeah, chickens and around house
07:23 AM XXCoder: cool
08:10 AM JT-Cave: crap fix one thing break something else
08:12 AM TurBoss: JT-Cave: hello, what software do you use for the cameras ?
08:13 AM JT-Cave: eye something
08:13 AM TurBoss: do you know zoneminder?
08:13 AM JT-Cave: I think I looked at it some years back
08:14 AM JT-Cave: motion is what I used
08:15 AM TurBoss: https://zoneminder.com/features/
08:15 AM TurBoss: :P
08:16 AM JT-Cave: do you need to install that on a dedicated server?
08:16 AM TurBoss: it installs a web server and such
08:17 AM TurBoss: but is you install from hand is php and others
08:17 AM TurBoss: *if
08:17 AM JT-Cave: hmm I can install that on a RPi
08:17 AM JT-Cave: https://wiki.zoneminder.com/Debian_10_Buster_with_Zoneminder_1.36.x_from_ZM_Repo
08:18 AM TurBoss: you can skip meny steps if you allready have a server
08:20 AM JT-Cave: server died
08:46 AM TurBoss: :op
09:12 AM _unreal_: freaking internet connection issues
09:26 AM _unreal_: finaly found a work around long story short my inhome internet has been shut down on me. GOD I wish my stocks would just RUN and I had the money to LEAVE.....
10:23 AM JT-Shop: Tom_L, line numbers have been added
10:25 AM Tom_L: nice one
10:25 AM Tom_L: i'm probably the only one that does that :)
10:26 AM Tom_L: i don't always 'run from line' from a tool change so it helps to know where to insert an M3 just above the line i want to start at
10:27 AM Tom_L: that's one reason i leave em in. that and just habbit
10:49 AM Tom_L: ok, mowed, showered, sifted thru junk email...
10:50 AM Tom_L: balanced the ck bk... $0.00
10:51 AM Tom_L: oh btw
10:51 AM Tom_L: if you need stamps, they're increasing tomorrow to .58
10:51 AM Tom_L: last day today
10:53 AM Tom_L: up .03 for first class, up .01 for postcard
10:53 AM Tom_L: i asked if the service would improve because of it and i just got that "POSTAL" look back
10:57 AM roycroft: it is going to improve
10:57 AM roycroft: they are going to take two more days to deliver the mail, to make sure it gets done properly
10:59 AM JT-Shop: yep I added line numbers just for you Tom_L
10:59 AM perry_j1987: back home now
10:59 AM perry_j1987: whew drove through night time with tornado warnings and then watch
10:59 AM JT-Shop: the blue chariot is clean and ready for the birthday celebration ride and dinner but first a nap
11:00 AM roycroft: woodcraft just put some ebony turning blanks on clearance at 75% off
11:01 AM roycroft: i can use those for making plugs for the furniture stuff i'm doing, so i guess i'm off to woodcraft
11:01 AM roycroft: ebony is so bloody expensive, and getting even more expensive and harder to get
11:01 AM roycroft: i have a nice hoarde of it already, but at their clearance price i'll probably clean the store out of whatever stock they have
11:02 AM Tom_L: i bet that stuff is hard to cut
11:02 AM roycroft: it is
11:02 AM Tom_L: pretty hard wood very tight grain
11:02 AM roycroft: it hand tools pretty nicely, in general
11:02 AM roycroft: as long as your tools are razor sharp
11:02 AM roycroft: but on the table saw, perfect fence alignment and really sharp blade, and exactly the correct feed rate
11:03 AM roycroft: it's so rare that i would never use it as a primary wood, but it's really nice for accents
11:05 AM CloudEvil: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203577537528 old bowling balls canbe interesting sources
11:20 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, happy birthday if it's yours
11:23 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:23 AM JT-Cave: it's my wife's birthday Sunday she turns 70
11:24 AM Tom_L: well she can have a happy one too!
11:24 AM JT-Cave: I'm still a youngster
11:24 AM Tom_L: btw
11:24 AM Tom_L: the messages still show up from facing in the pocket window
11:24 AM Tom_L: just dl and tested now
11:24 AM Tom_dev: ;Steps 4
11:24 AM Tom_dev: ;Top 0.0
11:24 AM Tom_L: in the pocket window
11:25 AM Tom_L: where did you hide the N numbers?
11:25 AM JT-Cave: I'm not seeing anything in pocket, did you get the latest version?
11:26 AM JT-Cave: gcode page is the only place it makes sense to me... if you append from several places then you add N numbers
11:26 AM Tom_dev: https://github.com/jethornton/gcode/raw/master/gcode_0.0.4_amd64.deb
11:26 AM JT-Cave: 5
11:26 AM Tom_dev: well damn.
11:27 AM Tom_dev: ok 4 is still broke :)
11:27 AM JT-Cave: yea
11:28 AM Tom_L: will that install over .4?
11:28 AM JT-Cave: gdebi should
11:28 AM Tom_L: yeah that's what i used
11:29 AM Tom_dev: File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/libgcode/face.py", line 113, in generate
11:29 AM Tom_dev: parent.facePTE.appendPlainText(f';Face Stock X{left} to X{left + widthX} '
11:29 AM Tom_dev: AttributeError: 'editor' object has no attribute 'appendPlainText'
11:30 AM Tom_L: on the facing routine
11:30 AM JT-Cave: yea fixing that now lol
11:30 AM Tom_L: i added that to the cave
11:31 AM JT-Cave: switching from QPlainTextEdit to QTextEdit so a bit of breakage
11:31 AM Tom_L: np
11:32 AM Tom_L: how much of this is qtpyvcp?
11:32 AM Tom_L: probably quite a bit of hidden python
11:33 AM Tom_L: i haven't looked at qtpyvcp in quite a while
11:34 AM JT-Cave: none, it's Python3 and PyQt5
11:34 AM JT-Cave: just pushed all the fixes for 'appendPlainText' I think
11:35 AM JT-Cave: the QPlainTextEdit I can't figure out how to set the font for the drill chart page so I switched to QTextEdit
11:35 AM Tom_L: yay!
11:35 AM Tom_L: no crash
11:35 AM Tom_L: no messages in pocket
11:36 AM Tom_L: however
11:36 AM Tom_L: the code output has ;Steps 4 and ;Top 0.0 as output text
11:36 AM JT-Cave: I spotted an omission on the drill chart page where inch tap does not recalc for different machines
11:36 AM JT-Cave: fix that after my nap
11:37 AM Tom_L: np nap is on the menu here as well
11:39 AM _unreal_: I dont know if it would be better to print or mill the thing I need to make
11:39 AM _unreal_: :/
11:39 AM _unreal_: making a reciver block for filter material
11:39 AM _unreal_: where the filters push then twist to lock into place
11:40 AM JT-Cave: nm it's working I just selected something where the smallest drill rpm was 3000 lol
11:57 AM Tom_L: k, sammich gone. nap time
12:21 PM roycroft: so the woodcraft store informed me that the clearance price on the ebony is "obviously a mistake" and refused to honor it
12:22 PM roycroft: i guess i'll see if there's some available online that i can order without seeing it
12:33 PM roycroft: the website does not complain about the price :)
12:50 PM unterhaus: they had it in their clearance section with a price on it?
12:51 PM unterhaus: the closest woodcraft to me appears to be going out of business maybe
12:51 PM unterhaus: they have been trying to sell for years now, beautiful store
12:52 PM unterhaus: it's 90-ish miles from here though
01:02 PM roycroft: no, it has a clearance price on the website, and also in the computer at checkout
01:02 PM roycroft: but no posted clearance price in the store
01:02 PM roycroft: i informed them it was on clearance, and the computer confirmed the clearance price, but they refused to honor it
01:03 PM roycroft: the manager was not there
01:03 PM roycroft: she'll probably not be happy when i tell her that i bought $200 worth of ebony online because the store staff refused to sell it to me at the listed price
01:03 PM roycroft: or maybe she will
01:04 PM roycroft: i know how much was there and i'm almost willing to bet that if i go back to that store in six months all of it will still be there
01:05 PM roycroft: and when it's on clearance, corporate will not restock the store, so if the same amount is there in six months it will be the exact same product that i tried to buy
01:05 PM roycroft: the owners of that store are kind of jerks, and rather short-sighted
01:06 PM roycroft: i went in one day a few years ago and bought $250 worth of festool abrasives for a new sander i had just purchased
01:06 PM roycroft: the owner asked me what sander it was for and i told him
01:07 PM roycroft: he said he didn't remember the store selling one of those models recently (i had already told him the abrasives were for a newly-purchased machine) and i told him that i did not buy it there - i bought it online from festoolrecon.com, and would not have been able to cost-jutify the purchase of new one, but the refurb model made it possible
01:07 PM roycroft: he got all pissed off that i did not buy a brand new one from him
01:08 PM roycroft: while i'm standing there looking at a $250 purchase of consumables for it that i *was* buying from him
01:08 PM roycroft: consumables that have a much higher margin than the tools themselves
01:09 PM roycroft: his position was that if i'm a good customer i should pay him full retail for the thing, and not buy a refubished model elsewhere
01:09 PM roycroft: i avoided that woodcraft store for a year after that
01:10 PM roycroft: if i really needed something from woodcraft right now i'd drive to portland (almost 2 hours away) rather than go to the local store
01:10 PM roycroft: i mostly ordered online for that year though
01:10 PM Tom_L: i would have walked out without the abrasives and left them sitting on the checkout counter
01:11 PM roycroft: and lost all my revenue, which amounted to thousands of dollars over that year
01:11 PM roycroft: i almost did
01:11 PM roycroft: but i needed them
01:11 PM Tom_L: 3m is a big company and doesn't just supply him
01:11 PM roycroft: and it wasn't until after i left that i got really pissed off at him
01:11 PM roycroft: i just thought he was nuts at the time i was checking out
01:11 PM roycroft: i was correct
01:11 PM roycroft: but he was both nuts and a jerk
01:12 PM Tom_L: my friend made a cutting die machine for them for such very abrasives
01:12 PM roycroft: he's gone now - i don't know what happened to him
01:12 PM roycroft: his wife is the manager now
01:12 PM roycroft: she used to do purchasing and bookkeeping, but now she manages the store
01:12 PM roycroft: she's sometimes a jerk too
01:13 PM roycroft: both she and her husband like to proclaim that they are "christians", "conservatives", and "libertarians"
01:13 PM roycroft: as in unprovoked, completely out of context declarations
01:14 PM roycroft: since i look like a hippie, perhaps they just don't like me because of that
01:14 PM _unreal_: roycroft, can you do an ONLINE purchase and store pickup :)
01:14 PM _unreal_: JUST to rub it in
01:14 PM Tom_L: your money is green. i don't mind taking it no matter what you look like :)
01:14 PM roycroft: if i walk into a store and the owner says "i'm a christian", at most i will say "ok"
01:15 PM roycroft: i try to ignore the comment
01:15 PM roycroft: _unreal_: it's a franchise store, not a corporate store
01:15 PM roycroft: i can't ship to store there
01:15 PM Tom_L: roycroft, just reply "I'm Jesus"
01:15 PM Tom_L: you been a bad bad boy!
01:16 PM roycroft: and if the store computer did not have the clearance price and they told me that the franchise does not honor the corporate prices, i'd have been disappointed but i'd have understood
01:16 PM roycroft: but for the store computer to come up with the clearance price and have the staff refuse to honor it is a completely different thing
01:16 PM Tom_L: i had that happen at HD
01:16 PM unterhaus: that exotic stuff seems to sit there for years
01:16 PM roycroft: tom_l: contrary to what folks may sometimes think of me, i really try to avoid conflicts like that
01:17 PM Tom_L: in fact the lady went and pulled all the stock off the shelf and said the marked price and computer were wrong
01:17 PM unterhaus: I sorta had it done to me on a lowe's black friday sale
01:17 PM roycroft: when someone tries to shove their values down my throat i usually try to just avoid the situation
01:17 PM unterhaus: I wanted something, they had it, but they had hand-marked a different price on the display
01:18 PM unterhaus: I was annoyed and went to Home Depot
01:18 PM roycroft: i had something similar happen at crosscut hardwoods once
01:18 PM roycroft: i went in and purchased a bunch of birch
01:18 PM roycroft: the price on the computer came up higher than the posted price
01:18 PM roycroft: i told the guy that the sign said the lower price
01:19 PM Tom_L: she thought it was: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-7-8-in-1-3-8-in-12-Black-Oxide-Step-Drill-Bit-5-Steps-48-89-9212/204416457
01:19 PM roycroft: he turned red in the face got all pissed off, stopped processing my transaction, went to the computer, printed out a bunch of new price tags (apparently prices went up that very day), walked around the store, posted the new prices on a bunch of products, then came back to the counter and honored the original price
01:19 PM Tom_L: but instead it was this https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-7-8-in-1-1-8-in-9-Black-Oxide-Step-Drill-Bit-2-Steps-48-89-9209/204312646
01:20 PM roycroft: i had to wait almost 10 minutes for him to throw his fit
01:20 PM roycroft: so she had no idea
01:21 PM roycroft: that's when it's time to get the manager
01:21 PM unterhaus: I didn't know anyone cared at home depot
01:21 PM roycroft: i try to avoid that store as much as possible
01:21 PM unterhaus: not sure why anyone cared at Lowes, but the thing I wanted was half price
01:21 PM roycroft: lowes are much nicer
01:21 PM roycroft: but their product line is more like harbor freight quality, generally
01:22 PM unterhaus: I think lowes treats their workers better
01:22 PM roycroft: i have a lowe's credit card, and get 5% off on everything when i buy stuff there
01:22 PM roycroft: but all i ever buy there is paint and sheet goods
01:22 PM unterhaus: I get 10% off military discount
01:22 PM roycroft: because everything else seems to be either higher priced than elsewhere or poor quality
01:22 PM unterhaus: still go to HD sometimes for reasons
01:23 PM roycroft: i just went there two days ago to pick up an order i had shipped to the store
01:23 PM unterhaus: we only have HD and lowe's now and their prices are almost identical
01:23 PM roycroft: after my garage door opener fiasco i won't have home depot ship to my house any more
01:23 PM Tom_L: i usually go to another local lumber store for lumber etc but they don't carry the extent of tooling etc
01:23 PM roycroft: anyway, the will-call person could not find my order and told me it must have shipped to another store
01:23 PM unterhaus: if anything, the lumber stores here are far worse
01:24 PM roycroft: i told her i placed one order for three items, and the other two had already shipped to the store i was at and i had picked them up
01:24 PM roycroft: so she rummaged around again for a while and finally handed me a box
01:24 PM roycroft: i left, but on my way out to my car i sensed that the box seemed a bit small for what was supposed to be in it
01:24 PM unterhaus: I always ask to look
01:24 PM roycroft: so i inspected it and saw that it had somene else's name on it
01:25 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, this one mostly supplies to builders etc
01:25 PM Tom_L: not so much gp anymore
01:25 PM roycroft: so i went right back inside, and handed it back to her and said it was not mine and she said "yes it is, that's your name on it"
01:25 PM roycroft: i told her it was not and she told me that was the name i told her
01:25 PM roycroft: i reminded her that i never told her my name - i presented my driver's licence to her as proof of id, and she got my name off the license
01:26 PM unterhaus: I have had so much trouble with HD ship to store that I hate to think about it
01:26 PM roycroft: she told me that i should have given her the order number, to which i responded that she never asked me for it
01:26 PM unterhaus: only way I buy cordless tools now though
01:26 PM roycroft: then i gave her the order number and she told me i had already picked it up
01:27 PM roycroft: apparently she got my name right when she put it in the computer but handed me the wrong box
01:27 PM roycroft: so the computer thought i had picked it up
01:27 PM unterhaus: that's the problem with ship to store, everything is manual and they are a batch of goofs
01:27 PM roycroft: she said that there's nothing she could do, because the computer said i had picked it up and the order was not on the shelf
01:27 PM roycroft: the manager that i got found my order right where it should be on the shelf
01:27 PM unterhaus: and if your shipment is in two boxes, it takes hurculean efforts for them to get it right
01:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: unfortunately my ability to smell burning rubber returned, that is one odor that just sticks with me
01:28 PM unterhaus: Cap'n, congratulations
01:28 PM roycroft: now that would suck
01:28 PM roycroft: to get the covid-19, and lose one's sense of smell
01:28 PM unterhaus: you could taste my cooking if such were necessary
01:28 PM roycroft: only to have it come back for things that smell like farts, but not for things that smell like vanilla
01:29 PM unterhaus: probably means the good smells are coming back though
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: grilled onions also came back
01:29 PM CloudEvil: roycroft: There are way worse outcomes.Being disabled enought to make you housebound- with no cure in sight is popular.
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: drank some of the worst beer the other day since I can't taste much
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: scotch ale in a can
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I could still sense it was bad
01:30 PM roycroft: it must not have been cold enough
01:31 PM roycroft: if you chill bad beer to just above its freezing point you hardly taste it at all
01:31 PM roycroft: it's the only way to consume bad beer
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have become far more aware of food and liquid texture and viscosity
01:31 PM roycroft: well, the only reasonable way
01:31 PM roycroft: i don't think getting infected with covid-19 is a resonable method of enduring bad beer
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I could not taste the sugar in water but I could tell which glass had it in it
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: never lost salty
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: hot peppers would burn my throat but could not feel a thing on the tongue
01:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just FYI if you get a positive test they can't tell you which variant you have
01:35 PM Roguish_shop: CaptHindsight[m], I loose smell every time i get a sinus infection. it comes back thuogh.
01:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: since the FDA has not approved of any sequencing test for covid yet
01:35 PM Roguish_shop: BUT in early 2016 I had a cold/flu and lost all taste and smell.....
01:35 PM CloudEvil: CaptHindsight[m]: To be fair, they were only developed 30 years ago.
01:36 PM Roguish_shop: smell slowly returned, but taste was messed up for 4 years.
01:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Roguish_shop: how long did you lose them for?
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: energy level is way up today, still feels like a head cold
01:37 PM Roguish_shop: taste was totally gone for like a year. then it became disgusia which means most things taste bad
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh fun
01:38 PM Roguish_shop: could not tell a mouthfull of sugar from a mouth full of salt.
01:39 PM Roguish_shop: after about 2 years taste started to slowly return. only had about 5 to 10% for the next 2 years.
01:39 PM Roguish_shop: just this year it really made a comeback. now almost normal.
01:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: was your tongue numb to touch as well?
01:40 PM Roguish_shop: it's usually a nerve damage problem. nerves from tastebuds to back of brain get affected by virus.
01:40 PM Roguish_shop: no, no tongue numbness
01:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: with covid the virus effects the cells around the taste buds
01:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and nearby blood vessels
01:41 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://hms.harvard.edu/news/how-covid-19-causes-loss-smell
01:41 PM Roguish_shop: i even went to a high dollar ENT at Stanford medical. she gave me a smell test, said there was nothing she could do, and don't come back.
01:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: fair enough
01:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I like straight shooter docs
01:42 PM Roguish_shop: I have an outstanding sinus doc. she changed my life by routing out my sinuses.
01:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and when they say "I don't know"
01:43 PM Roguish_shop: hardly ever have sinus issues anymore. she said there is little actually known about taste and smell as there is no money for studying it.
01:44 PM Roguish_shop: the Stanford ENT was a cunt....
01:44 PM Roguish_shop: my sinus ENT is a goddess
01:45 PM Roguish_shop: anyway. you will probably regain taste, just very slowly. could be a couple of years.
01:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: varies with covid
01:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: weeks to who knows, some that came down with it early last year still haven't gotten it back
01:46 PM Roguish_shop: smell generally comes back easier. smell sensors are in the upper, frontal sinuses. they can get all inflamed and fuck up the sense.
01:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: adds a bit of mystery to every meal
01:47 PM Roguish_shop: a good course of Prednisone can work wonders with the sinuses.
01:47 PM Roguish_shop: oh yeah. meals got boring.....
01:48 PM Roguish_shop: at first I overate hoping i could taste something.
01:48 PM Roguish_shop: I wish you luck. I sucks.
01:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i realized that I tend to choose favorites based on texture vs flavor
01:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's not that bad, just different
01:49 PM Roguish_shop: oh, one thing I did really enjoy was a cold beer. mostly the efforvesence
01:50 PM Roguish_shop: hang in there. not much choice......
01:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: glad not to be as tired anymore
01:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sleep 10-12 hours, be up for 4 and then take a 2 hour nap
01:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: maybe 2 hours of work in a day
03:24 PM roycroft: i doubt the kids' father said that, but the father has probably trained them to think that's the kind of thing that should be said
03:24 PM Tom_L: i've had to deal with neighbors like that in the past
03:24 PM Tom_L: it's no fun
03:24 PM roycroft: i don't want to argue with them
03:24 PM roycroft: i want to mind my own business
03:25 PM Tom_L: won't get anywhere for sure
03:25 PM roycroft: but i don't want to have to turn my property into a fortress
03:25 PM Tom_L: anyway. gotta run some errands
03:25 PM roycroft: i want to be able to open my garage door and not have kids run in after they've been told many times to stay out
03:26 PM Tom_L: they're looking for something they're not getting at home
03:26 PM roycroft: quite likely
03:26 PM Tom_L: bbl
03:26 PM roycroft: but i'm not the one to provide the attention they need
03:26 PM roycroft: ciao
03:27 PM roycroft: also, my workbench is now orange
03:27 PM roycroft: i was turning some padauk, and since ash is rather coarse-grained, the dust turned the whole benchtop orange
03:27 PM roycroft: it's about time to do the annual leveling of the benchtop - i was going to do that in a month or so, but perhaps i should do it sooner
03:28 PM roycroft: plane it level, sand it down, and give it a coat of tried and true varnish oil
03:30 PM roycroft: padauk can be a semi-severe irritant, btw, although i've never been bothered by it
03:30 PM roycroft: i'll stick with the "sissy" gear when i'm working with it
03:32 PM JT-Shop: you get to have all the fun
03:35 PM roycroft: i'm pondering taking a woodturning class
03:36 PM roycroft: the few things i've turned so far have all worked out well, but not exactly the profile i want
03:36 PM roycroft: close, but not perfect
03:36 PM roycroft: and i've only made a few parts
03:37 PM roycroft: i know i'll get better over time, but it's such a different craft than the woodworking i've been doing all these years, i am thinking a one day class might point me to some good habits/techniques right away so i don't have to figure them out for myself
03:37 PM JT-Shop: turning is still somewhat a mystery to me
03:38 PM roycroft: the problem is i'd have to go to portland - there are classes at the local woodcraft, but most folks who work there are know-it-alls who don't listen to customers wants and needs
03:38 PM JT-Shop: catching is easy lol
03:38 PM roycroft: i've not caught the tool at all
03:38 PM roycroft: i'm really careful about taht
03:38 PM roycroft: but i'm not even sure which tool i should be using much of the time
03:39 PM roycroft: like i said, the stuff i've made is not bad, but it's not exactly what i wanted
03:43 PM roycroft: it's at the parting line where i'm having the most trouble
04:00 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Bow-saw-handles.jpeg
04:01 PM roycroft: i'm turning between centers, and having to leave a little stub on the end, and that's where i have the trouble
04:01 PM roycroft: the shorter one, on the left, should be almost ball-shaped at the end
04:01 PM roycroft: and the one on the right is even a little too stubby at the end
04:02 PM roycroft: perhaps i just need to practice some more, with not exotic hardwoods
04:42 PM XXCoder: ... sissy eyes and ears
04:42 PM XXCoder: what they have, luteral eyes of steel? :P
04:54 PM roycroft: xxcoder: it's the mentality that "tough men" don't need any protective gear
04:55 PM XXCoder: i know
04:55 PM XXCoder: im just commenting on that comment from kid lol
04:56 PM XXCoder: its sad when basic safety is politized
04:57 PM XXCoder: they will have problems across possibly short life
04:57 PM roycroft: possibly
04:58 PM roycroft: and if they do they'll blame it on things other than their own bad behavioral choices
04:58 PM XXCoder: yeah
04:59 PM XXCoder: possibly its just basis of "overconnection" between ideals and traits of people. ie youre X, other person is Y, and you dislike Y, and Y likes to eat ramen, so ramen is "wuss food"
05:04 PM roycroft: it's even worse than that
05:04 PM roycroft: the tribalism is so bad that people don't even choose their likes and dislikes any more
05:04 PM roycroft: they have chosen their tribe, and they like everything their tribe likes and dislike everything other tribes like
05:05 PM * roycroft heads back to work on that note, not caring whether it's his tribe's idea of proper work or not
05:11 PM XXCoder: roy yeah. have fun at work
05:12 PM XXCoder: know what I like? breathing. ;)
05:23 PM * Tom_L thinks roycroft should bake some cookies for them
05:26 PM XXCoder: wood flour, metal chips for texture and taste, epoxy for more firm cookies
06:41 PM Roguish: just cracked 100
07:22 PM _unreal_: solarwind, sup
07:22 PM _unreal_: have any of youguys ever setup a phone as PC?
07:24 PM _unreal_: if you guys ever want to get one of these adapters. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TVSLDND/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
07:38 PM roycroft: i just read a fascinating article about how the soviets bugged electric typewriters in us embassies in moscow and leningrad
07:38 PM roycroft: i never knew that they did that
07:39 PM roycroft: they were probably the first keystroke loggers
09:16 PM cradek: I think the first keystroke logger was the first film typewriter ribbon. they logged perfectly. the only problem was you needed physical access to the machine.
09:17 PM cradek: you could get "security" ribbons for selectrics, which were old fashioned cloth instead of film
09:30 PM roycroft: in this hack the kgb hid transmitters inside the typewriters, and replaced some of the typing ball movement mechanism with parts that have magnets in the ends, and measured the change in the magnetic field as the typing ball moved about
09:30 PM roycroft: and then transmitted the data in short bursts
