01:06 AM Deejay: moin
02:02 AM randy: morning
04:00 AM Tom_L: morning
04:32 AM CoqroacH is now known as CockroacH
04:32 AM CockroacH is now known as Cagri
05:18 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:29 AM XXCoder: heys
08:17 AM Tom_L: hi 100F today
09:12 AM Eric_ is now known as unterhausen
09:12 AM unterhausen: High over 90 all week, I guess I have to water the garden.
09:12 AM unterhausen: only isolated thunderstorms too, so no real water but scare the pup
09:12 AM unterhausen: to top it off, amazon lied about when my stuff would get here, I just don't see how it will make it today
09:24 AM unterhausen: the stepper drivers I am testing with are l298 based with optoisolation. I'm sure they were expensive.
09:57 AM perry_j1987: hate sitting down and forgetting my glasses somewhere else in the house lol
10:07 AM unterhausen: I am currently squinting at the screen because my glasses are downstairs on the dining room table. At least I know where they are
10:08 AM Roguish: get some exercise and fetch 'em...........
10:22 AM perry_j1987: unterhausen time for one of those librarian necklace glass holders heh
10:38 AM unterhausen: I used to use the glasses tethers until I had cataract surgery done. Now I can see well enough I don't need glasses most of the time
10:39 AM unterhausen: but now I'm always looking for my readers
10:40 AM roycroft: i keep a pair of reading glasses near most places where i work
11:06 AM unterhausen: since my surgery, the best pair of reading glasses I have are my old glasses that I used to need to see anything
11:06 AM unterhausen: which has been pretty convenient, but I haven't gotten around to getting more
11:10 AM unterhausen: a passenger's phone caught fire on a flight into seattle last night
11:10 AM unterhausen: I wonder if it was an old samsung 7
11:13 AM perry_j1987: prob
11:14 AM perry_j1987: wasnt there a popular video game that jokingly added samsungs to the game as fire grenades lol
11:32 AM unterhausen: I think the faa has specifically banned samsung 7 from flight. I'm sure there are some out there
12:25 PM cradek: ha, the thought of tsa trying to determine the make and model of everyone's identical black glass rectangle
12:25 PM cradek: I'm sure that'll work great
12:32 PM JT-Shop: phone recycling machines do that all the time
12:44 PM JT-Shop: Roguish, still working on canned cycles and pushed a deb this morning
12:45 PM Roguish: ok. i'll check it out.
12:49 PM perry_j1987: *wants a full enclosure around the 6040 soon
12:49 PM perry_j1987: so i can stop cleaning up chips everywhere lol
12:52 PM JT-Shop: Roguish, working on help pages for each tab this morning
12:53 PM JT-Shop: mainly for the canned cycle page to explain what cycle you have selected
01:08 PM Roguish_shop: JT-Shop, did you rev the .deb?
01:08 PM JT-Shop: rev?
01:10 PM Roguish_shop: you did not change the file name. still 0.0.3
01:10 PM Roguish_shop: not 0.0.4
01:22 PM JT-Shop: right
01:44 PM perry_j1987: gah bad drill bit strikes again
01:44 PM perry_j1987: pull it out, measure it to verify go ahead and drill
01:45 PM perry_j1987: and its way bigger than it should be lol
01:45 PM perry_j1987: chuck in garbage
01:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
01:46 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:20 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, stop getting those cheap potmetal chinese bits
02:20 PM perry_j1987: i did lol
02:21 PM perry_j1987: but needed a diff size hole so thought eh... im reaming it anyways
02:21 PM perry_j1987: nOPE lol hole too big
02:21 PM JT-Shop: Roguish, I only up the version for major things
02:22 PM Tom_L: revised high for the day between 102-104F
02:22 PM JT-Shop: heat index?
02:22 PM Tom_L: no actual
02:22 PM JT-Shop: ouch
02:22 PM JT-Shop: we are 91°F actual
02:23 PM Tom_L: phone says 99 currently
02:23 PM Tom_L: it knows everything :)
02:31 PM roycroft: charlie watts has died
02:33 PM unterhausen: phone says 99, but it's a samsung 7
02:33 PM unterhausen: actual outside temperature is 65
02:37 PM roycroft: it's only 21 here today
02:37 PM roycroft: we've had very mild, unseasonably cool weather for the past few days
02:38 PM * roycroft is not complaining at all
02:46 PM JT-Shop: a buddy told me the latest updates for ms and eyephone can look at your photos without your consent...
02:48 PM * JT-Shop knows for a fact that ms never looks in his win10 laptop...
03:04 PM unterhausen: I think the looking at photos takes place when the photo is uploaded. Both apple and msft have cloud services
03:04 PM unterhausen: Ubuntu was making noises about that for a while
03:04 PM unterhausen: my win 10 machine keeps saying I have stuff on onedrive, dunno
03:04 PM unterhausen: never set it up afaik
03:05 PM unterhausen: Apple makes movies out of your photos and then sends you an email. The music tracks are often somewhat comedic
03:05 PM JT-Shop: I never connect my win10 to the internet
03:06 PM unterhausen: that makes bill gates really sad
03:06 PM JT-Shop: which makes me very glad
03:06 PM unterhausen: he might come to your house
03:08 PM unterhausen: I took some panoramas hoping that google would stitch them for me, they do that sometimes
03:08 PM JT-Shop: gimp
03:08 PM unterhausen: Yes, but google stitching is robots
03:09 PM unterhausen: only disadvantage is sometimes they inadvertently burn down your house
03:12 PM perry_j1987: there we go one freshly made gang tool holder
03:12 PM perry_j1987: my nicest one yet
03:12 PM roycroft: photoshop does a good job of stitching
03:12 PM roycroft: i'm not sure if the gimp does it as well
03:13 PM JT-Shop: no photo it didn't happen...
03:13 PM perry_j1987: rode the moped to the shop today
03:14 PM perry_j1987: here for few hours and now all of sudden i hear a HUGE rain storm on the metal roof lol
03:14 PM perry_j1987: did not see that on the forecast for today lol
03:14 PM unterhausen: google does such a nice job of stitching if it recongizes a panorama. It would be nice if they would just let you select the pics and click a button
03:14 PM perry_j1987: booming thunder
03:15 PM unterhausen: this time of year, pop up thunderstorms are extremely common in the U.S.
03:15 PM unterhausen: much to the chagrin of little dog, who thinks it's dinnertime and is really excited about it
03:21 PM unterhausen: I gave in and ordered din rail from amazon, so they screwed me and it's not coming until tomorrow
03:21 PM unterhausen: I got everything else today
03:25 PM unterhausen: I was trying to figure out if the place my mom's house used to be in tennessee got flooded again
03:25 PM unterhausen: her house was destroyed in a thousand year flood
03:26 PM unterhausen: which I thought was silly since it was situated on what was clearly a flood plain
03:35 PM JT-Cave: I ended up with an odd number of M3 screws that I use for my standoffs... looking in my box marked Computer Screws 7-96 I find 7
03:54 PM perry_j1987: what gives with this lathe... ugh
03:54 PM perry_j1987: its moving 14.77mm when told to move 15
03:55 PM perry_j1987: pretty darn sure i had already calibrated the steps per mm
04:02 PM perry_j1987: gibs too tight haha
04:08 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day in the machine shop and heads out to the other shop to work on the sawstop cabinet
04:31 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, just put a bigger stepper on it
04:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: perry_j1987: how many micro steps are you using?
04:37 PM perry_j1987: no clue
04:37 PM perry_j1987: its those g320x servo drivers
04:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: someone on the forums was using something like 64 or 128 and having issues with repeatability with a 1" pitch screw or similar
04:39 PM perry_j1987: i have been messing with this lathe since winter time now
04:39 PM perry_j1987: still not really able to make parts with it yet
04:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.geckodrive.com/amfile/file/download/file_id/16/product_id/21/
04:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: what are SW2, SW3 set to??
04:40 PM perry_j1987: to the left
04:40 PM perry_j1987: both
04:43 PM perry_j1987: its what they came iwth default
04:43 PM perry_j1987: so 1x i believe to the left is On
04:44 PM perry_j1987: everso slight feeling of the x servo humming
04:44 PM perry_j1987: if you put hands on both x and z servos
04:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if i could find the magic 8 ball I might be able to help
04:46 PM perry_j1987: what do you mean
04:47 PM roycroft: i just got an invoice for the repair of my controller board for my mill, which means it had failed and he repaired it
04:48 PM roycroft: the guy just got it yesterday, so that's a pretty fast turn-around
04:48 PM roycroft: i hope to find out what was wrong with it soon
04:48 PM perry_j1987: ya be interesting to know roycroft
04:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: easy fix, profitable fix, parts in stock for fix etc
04:48 PM roycroft: i suspect mosfets
04:49 PM roycroft: he's also going on holidays next week
04:49 PM roycroft: so i think he's trying to get as much done as possible before then
04:49 PM roycroft: and collect as much cash as possible before then
04:49 PM roycroft: i've had this machine for about 12 years now
04:49 PM roycroft: this is the first repair i've had to do, other than replacing the belt a couple times
04:50 PM roycroft: so i'm not unhappy - it came to $65, plus the $13 i paid to ship it to him
04:50 PM roycroft: that's about $7.50/year in repair costs
04:50 PM _unreal_: ve7it, how goes it
04:50 PM roycroft: actually less than that
04:51 PM roycroft: i don't remember how much the belts cost, but they are only a couple or three dollars
04:51 PM roycroft: or maybe more :)
04:51 PM * roycroft is curious now
04:52 PM ve7it: _unreal_, hey.... not bad... its finally cooling down a bit at night... feels like fall... feels great
04:53 PM roycroft: they are $4.95 each now
04:53 PM roycroft: and i've changed the belt twice
04:53 PM _unreal_: heh
04:53 PM ve7it: _unreal_, I guess you have a few more months to wait for the hurricanes to go away
04:53 PM _unreal_: remember I'm in florida
04:53 PM roycroft: so $6.91/year for repairs
04:53 PM _unreal_: been a quite season so far
04:54 PM _unreal_: SOO FAR
04:54 PM roycroft: ve7it: that's the thing - it has been getting hot during the day here still, other than the past few days, but it's been getting down below 10 at night, which is refreshing
04:54 PM _unreal_: ve7it, latest progress https://photos.app.goo.gl/1ejmwQjHGskbBvob9
04:54 PM roycroft: the heat doesn't build up inside the house like it does in the middle of summer
04:55 PM _unreal_: roycroft, here in florida most homes dont even have built in heating
04:55 PM _unreal_: well "built in heating" is a set of heater coils IN the AC
04:55 PM roycroft: and most homes here in western oregon don't have ac
04:55 PM roycroft: it got down to 8 last night, which is right about where basil decides to give up the ghost
04:55 PM _unreal_: HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL we dont even have SEALS on the doors
04:55 PM _unreal_: lol
04:56 PM roycroft: so i'm going to have to harvest all my basil very soon and dry it for use over the winter
04:56 PM _unreal_: I grow basil all winter
04:56 PM _unreal_: and chive
04:56 PM roycroft: this week's pizza may be the last one until next may with fresh basil
04:56 PM _unreal_: outside
04:56 PM ve7it: its been a very dry summer here.... forest fire hazard is BAD.... only 1 fire so far on the island, but the interior of BC has been burning... probably be xmas before smoke goes away
04:57 PM XXCoder: here smoke season was tame,
04:57 PM _unreal_: ve7it, puff puff give.... ya fucken up the rotation
04:57 PM roycroft: when i was getting ready for my camping trip a few weeks ago a friend suggested that i go up to bc, where i used to go frequently when i lived up by the border
04:57 PM XXCoder: still havent rained for while besides couple brief rain
04:57 PM roycroft: i had to tell him no way - it's way too hot there and way too many fires
04:57 PM _unreal_: ve7it, dont anything with the BLDC drives?
04:57 PM _unreal_: or still just did the proof of concept
04:57 PM roycroft: something i never thought i'd say about bc
04:58 PM _unreal_: rain been very wet this summer
04:58 PM _unreal_: here
04:58 PM roycroft: i lived in bellingham before i moved to oregon - vancouver was a good place to go for dinner and a show, as it was way closer than seattle
04:58 PM _unreal_: not as bad as some other summers though O..M..G...
04:58 PM _unreal_: I miss going to NS
04:58 PM _unreal_: use to take the CAT
04:59 PM _unreal_: from bar harbor
04:59 PM _unreal_: https://www.ferries.ca/thecat/overview/
05:00 PM ve7it: yah... NS is a fun place.... have done several jobs there in the past..
05:01 PM _unreal_: my friends and I use to do a weeked trip there when we were 18 yo rnage
05:01 PM _unreal_: ;)
05:01 PM roycroft: *chuckle*
05:01 PM _unreal_: if you follow my drift
05:01 PM roycroft: i was at a meeting the other day
05:01 PM roycroft: one of the women attending was excited about her weekend - her daughter has always wanted to go on a ferry ride, so they drove up to canby (a 90 minute drive one way), to ride the ferry across the river
05:02 PM roycroft: it was like a 3 minute ferry ride
05:02 PM roycroft: and they thought it was great
05:02 PM _unreal_: o.O
05:02 PM _unreal_: I use to take 30min ferry rides to go to swans island or , the cranberries
05:02 PM ve7it: in NS they know how to party!
05:02 PM roycroft: when i lived in washington i used to take ferries all the time, but i think the shortest ferry route i took was 35 minutes, and most of the ferries took an hour or more
05:02 PM _unreal_: off of MDI mount desert island
05:02 PM _unreal_: in maine
05:03 PM _unreal_: thats a ferry
05:03 PM _unreal_: LOL
05:03 PM _unreal_: GOD DAMN... he ferry ride in DISNEYworld here in florida is longer then that
05:03 PM roycroft: iirc, the ferry from the lower mainland to the island (tsawassan to nanaimo)is more like 2 hours
05:03 PM _unreal_: to get from the parking to magic kingdom the ferry ride is like 10min
05:04 PM roycroft: that ferry is almost like a cruise ship
05:04 PM _unreal_: hum
05:04 PM _unreal_: ya when my stocks move FINALLLY
05:04 PM ve7it: yup.. 2 choices to the Island... 1 and a half and 2 hours depending on route
05:04 PM _unreal_: oh there is a good chance I could become a multimillionaire after the next run on my stocks
05:05 PM roycroft: tsawassen is the closest one when coming up from washington
05:05 PM roycroft: the other is horseshoe bay
05:05 PM _unreal_: I will be taking my daughter to "DRY TORTUGA
05:05 PM roycroft: which is a shorter crossing, but i'd have to drive up through vancouver to get to the ferry dock
05:05 PM _unreal_: https://www.drytortugas.com/
05:05 PM _unreal_: I'm going to take my daughter to that next
05:05 PM _unreal_: when my stocks move which should be soon I should make a LOT of money
05:06 PM _unreal_: I'm going to take her to that place. I'll likely take her on the PLANE ride
05:06 PM _unreal_: sea plain
05:06 PM roycroft: my portfolio was way up for the year back in june, but now i'm down a bit
05:07 PM roycroft: but recovering
05:08 PM _unreal_: roycroft, WEED stocks and AMC
05:08 PM _unreal_: WEED is going to go though the roof in SEPT
05:08 PM roycroft: amc was up over 900% a while ago
05:08 PM roycroft: now it's "only" up 450%
05:08 PM ve7it: its interesting how covid has slimmed down a lot of businesses to "lean and mean" status (the other option is bankrupt)
05:08 PM _unreal_: amc hit almost $50 today
05:09 PM _unreal_: fake pandemic sorry
05:09 PM roycroft: hmm
05:09 PM roycroft: please, let's not go there
05:09 PM roycroft: yeah, i see that amc is currently at $44.36
05:09 PM ve7it: my bad :{
05:09 PM _unreal_: >:) remember I spent almost 20 years in human health and medicine
05:09 PM roycroft: i bought a bunch at $6.80, so i'm doin gok
05:10 PM _unreal_: ve7it, he's talk to me
05:10 PM roycroft: doing ok, rather
05:10 PM _unreal_: n ot ou
05:10 PM * roycroft has moved on
05:10 PM * _unreal_ drags feet
05:10 PM _unreal_: LOL
05:10 PM _unreal_: roycroft, ;)
05:10 PM _unreal_: ehhhh :) ehhhhhh!
05:11 PM _unreal_: roycroft, you know I love ya as much as I hate ya ;)
05:11 PM _unreal_: but ya AMC is looking at a HUGE move soon
05:11 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I would suggest looking at this then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEWKhwe7vQk
05:12 PM ve7it: time to head out for a walk... ttyl
05:12 PM roycroft: i just figured out a cheap way to build some jigs for sharpening lathe gouges and the like on my belt grinder, but if i build them they won't work with the gen2 grinder
05:13 PM roycroft: so i emailed jeremy schmidt with a couple questions about gen2 and backwards compatiblity with gen 1
05:13 PM roycroft: i may be building a new belt grinder again soon
05:29 PM * JT-Shop came to the realization that the particle board shelves will not do in the sawstop cabinet... going to have to make some
05:29 PM XXCoder: making some particle boards? ;)
05:30 PM XXCoder: nice, thats good though since particle boards from what I understand is water and stuff sponge
05:35 PM JT-Shop: no, I bought some cheap shelves for the sawstop cabinet but it's turning out too good to use them
05:35 PM JT-Shop: I'll make them from some red oak with character lol
05:43 PM unterhausen: since my under-saw cabinet looks so much worse than JT's, I decided to go upscale on my under-bench cabinet
05:43 PM unterhausen: using up a lot of my curly maple
05:49 PM unterhausen: amazon sent out an email that our roku wouldn't be supported and now the roku site is hammered
05:52 PM unterhausen: I'm trying to decide if I am tired of BLT sandwiches
05:52 PM * JT-Shop wanders to the house after trying unsuccessfully to speak to someone at verizon
06:46 PM unterhausen: spouse let me know she wasn't going to have dinner at home an hour and a half after figuring it out
06:47 PM unterhausen: not that I'm incredibly hungry or anything
07:08 PM roycroft: so i have to say i'm impressed
07:09 PM roycroft: as i mentioned a short while ago, i emailed jeremy schmidt asking him if he thinks it's possible to modify his gen 2 belt grinder to fit the cabinet i built for the gen 1 model
07:10 PM roycroft: he just responded with a bunch of cad drawings showing modifications to the gen 2 to ensure it has the proper clearances for the gen 1 cabinet
07:10 PM roycroft: and he experimented and was able to lower the gen 2 so that the hinge point is only 2" higher than the gen 1, which is awesome
07:11 PM roycroft: the stock gen 2 grinder has the hinge about 9" higher than the gen 1, and that would put the table almost at shoulder height
07:11 PM roycroft: i expected "yeah, you can probably do it" or "i don't think it will work", not a set of cad drawings with mods to the design
07:11 PM roycroft: i guess i owe him $28 for a new set of plans :)
07:32 PM XXCoder: nice
07:39 PM roycroft: yeah
07:40 PM roycroft: i'm not really wanting to do another belt grinder build, but i do want to make some attachments for it that i've been meaning to make for a long time, and those attachments won't work with the gen 2 design
07:40 PM roycroft: i've had a small wheel set and a contact wheel for over a year, for example
07:40 PM roycroft: so it seems now is the time to build the gen 2 model if i'm ever going to do it
08:00 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaIVzdJ2V5w Makes me think of this perhaps excessive belt grinder
08:30 PM roycroft: if you think that is an "excessive" belt grinder then you've never used a belt grinder
08:31 PM roycroft: if i had to get rid of all my machines but one the belt grinder is probably the one i would keep
08:32 PM XXCoder: belt grinder milling
08:33 PM XXCoder: i notice more and more videos machinists use facemill
08:34 PM roycroft: i don't do milling work on my belt grinder
08:34 PM roycroft: but i could do some milling work on it
08:34 PM XXCoder: ya was kidding :)
08:35 PM XXCoder: 45 degree mill. never seen one that big before
08:35 PM roycroft: i've considered adding a table with t-slots to my belt grinder
08:42 PM XXCoder: "smoked this carbide tool, but meh ill just srotch brite part" lol
08:50 PM XXCoder: CloudEvil: veyr nice video
08:51 PM CloudEvil: :)
08:51 PM XXCoder: leveling trick is interesting
09:11 PM XXCoder: man at end it looks so nice
09:11 PM XXCoder: bluing then oil
09:15 PM XXCoder: only thing im eh on is that it sprays sparks towards face
09:15 PM XXCoder: i would have tiny plastic cover there to block that
09:17 PM Thorhian: CloudEvil: I've seen that series before. I'd love to build one someday.
09:20 PM roycroft: so my controller board took a power surge
09:21 PM roycroft: the thyristors were damaged and a diode's leads melted
09:21 PM roycroft: hopefully that was not from the motor
09:22 PM roycroft: anyway, i should have it back by week's end
09:22 PM XXCoder: ouch
09:29 PM roycroft: i'll just be happy to have the machine working again
09:30 PM roycroft: and i think that the controller/spindle motor will be the first part of the cnc conversion, not the last part
10:13 PM XXCoder: CloudEvil: https://youtu.be/ACgp8JdJodc
10:13 PM XXCoder: seems he fixes those issues on this video
