09:20 AM hazzy[m]: hello
09:21 AM hazzy[m]: Trying to install LCNC with python3 support. Is there a buildbot version for Py3 or should I build from source?
09:42 AM Tom_L: hazzy[m], http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dists/
09:42 AM Tom_L: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dev.html
09:42 AM Tom_L: you can check one of those two places
09:43 AM Tom_L: i was thinking master was 3 now
09:43 AM unterhaus: I saw some complaints about py2 not being supported on the ML
09:43 AM hazzy[m]: Tom_L: Thanks! I did check there but did not see anything promising
09:43 AM unterhaus: so I think you're right about master
09:44 AM Tom_L: how's rpi4 treating you?
09:44 AM hazzy[m]: strange thing is LCNC starts with python3.8.10, but the linuxcnc python module is not importable from 3.8.10. it is from 2.7
09:45 AM unterhaus: Tom_L waiting for the postman for the case
09:45 AM Tom_L: oh
09:46 AM Tom_L: hazzy[m], you'd have to ask one of the guru's
09:46 AM unterhaus: I burned an image to the sd card, so I'm ready. If I can find an hdmi monitor
09:46 AM unterhaus: maybe a better question for linuxcnc-devel?
09:47 AM hazzy[m]: yeah, I'll try there
09:47 AM hazzy[m]: thanks guys!
09:47 AM Tom_L: that would be where the gurus hang out :)
09:47 AM unterhaus: the most recent image I found is 2.8.1, but it says it will auto-update
09:47 AM Tom_L: for the rpi?
09:47 AM unterhaus: yeah
09:47 AM Tom_L: no
09:47 AM unterhaus: not the deb, the sd image
09:47 AM Tom_L: oh
09:48 AM Tom_L: well maybe yeah
09:48 AM Tom_L: just dl the deb after the iso and it's a simple update
09:48 AM Tom_L: if you haven't run 2.8 you will have to update your configs slightly
09:48 AM unterhaus: updating lcnc is the most confusing part to me
09:49 AM Tom_L: they changed some motion. and spindle naming
09:49 AM Tom_L: but it's not a hard fix
09:49 AM unterhaus: have you ever tried one of the pi4 touchscreens?
09:49 AM Tom_L: added [joint] along with [axis]
09:49 AM Tom_L: no
09:50 AM Tom_L: they should work ok
09:50 AM Tom_L: might be a little small
09:50 AM unterhaus: yeah
09:50 AM unterhaus: the application I want to use it for needs a button
09:51 AM Tom_L: add a pendant button
09:51 AM unterhaus: still need a display
09:51 AM unterhaus: but not much of one
09:53 AM Rhine_Labs: Hakko FM-203 Teardown I Speak In this video.. LOL https://youtu.be/9JJvjJ5gGQw
09:54 AM unterhaus: 795 hits on amazon for pi 4 display. Some of the pictures feature people with really small hands
09:54 AM Tom_L: is that a warning?
09:55 AM Tom_L: i picture it size wise as something you'd find in an auto
09:56 AM unterhaus: the 7" are like a smaller tablet
09:57 AM unterhaus: but the lvds connectors aren't available with the heatsink case, are they?
10:00 AM unterhaus: there are hdmi touchscreens, just a little clunkier to connect
10:24 AM perry_j1987: morning
10:25 AM Rhine_Labs: Morning.
10:36 AM unterhaus: postman forgot to deliver any packages, so he had to make another round of the street
10:38 AM unterhaus: I see there is access to the flatscreen connectors, that's nice
10:50 AM unterhaus: I guess I won't use the mesa spacers to mount the Pi, I have some din mounts that will be just as easy
11:00 AM Tom_L: did your heatsink arrive?
11:03 AM Tom_L: the DSI connector is available thru that heatsink
11:04 AM perry_j1987: i really would like to eeek out a bit more x travel on this lathe
11:04 AM Tom_L: start eeeking
11:04 AM JT-Shop: unterhaus, I have a touch screen on a rpi in the chicken coop
11:05 AM perry_j1987: i need to remove some metal thats causing hard stop situations
11:05 AM Tom_L: JT-Shop, what case are you using?
11:06 AM Tom_L: the DSI looks like one of those mini ribbons
11:06 AM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WXK38YM/
11:06 AM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073S3LQ6Q/
11:06 AM JT-Shop: I actually have two of them
11:07 AM Tom_L: will lcnc axis fit on the 7"?
11:07 AM perry_j1987: wouldnt you want touchy or one of the touch friendly interfaces
11:07 AM JT-Shop: 800x480
11:08 AM JT-Shop: I'd use qtpyvcp and make it fit well
11:08 AM Tom_L: yeah
11:08 AM Tom_L: or borrow yours :)
11:08 AM JT-Shop: looks like they have added a fan to the case for the rpi4
11:09 AM perry_j1987: so are the pi's still top
11:09 AM perry_j1987: with all these nano pi, banana pi, orange pi boards etc
11:11 AM Roguish: good morning from a cool, and smokie Bay Area.
11:13 AM Tom_L: i'll take the cool, you can keep the smoke
11:22 AM unterhaus: I don't think there is anything better than the Pi4 yet, they have come out with variations
11:22 AM unterhaus: JT-Shop, what's automated in the chicken coop?
11:23 AM unterhaus: anyway, the Pi4 is expensive enough and works, I really wouldn't want to spend much more than that
11:26 AM Tom_L: unterhaus, there _are_ some tweaks you can do to it. ask skunkworks if you're interested
11:26 AM unterhaus: what kind of tweaks?
11:29 AM Tom_L: to improve latency
11:30 AM Tom_L: i thought i had them here but not finding so far
11:33 AM perry_j1987: unterhaus i thought odroid and the others had specs that blew raspberry pi's out of the water
11:41 AM unterhaus: maybe they have better specs, but can you just use the lcnc images or have to build things? The conveneince is worth a lot to me
11:41 AM Tom_L: it would be alot bigger hassle for sure
11:41 AM buzzmarshall: problem with odroid and the rest of those types of sbc's is unless your basically looking in the media and streaming area the dev scene is poor compared to the rpi stuff
11:41 AM Tom_L: building a realtime kernel etc
11:43 AM unterhaus: I have been building real time kernels and linuxcnc since the before times and I really don't want to go back if I don't have to
11:43 AM buzzmarshall: ive had the amlogic and rockchip boards all running linuxcnc and unless you want to do a lot of work and dev most of them arent worth the trouble right now
11:43 AM unterhaus: "before times" meaning when it was EMC and not EMC2
11:44 AM buzzmarshall: amlogic and rk with real time is not very reliable and ive been compiling and bulding linux system since slackware 1st came out
11:45 AM unterhaus: It seems like the kernel build has become the province of specialists, or people that want to put a lot of time into it
11:46 AM unterhaus: I don't even want to build a package from source anymore.
11:46 AM buzzmarshall: lol... i am the other way as i prefer to build most of my stuff from sources but your right as most don't want to go that way
11:47 AM unterhaus: it just seems like most projects don't do a good job of making things build.
11:49 AM buzzmarshall: i think as more people moved into the linux scene the amount of uses and projects grew so much now that its alot tougher to build projects that cover as many targets as people want which doesn't help but at least as the current move to streamline things in the mainline goes it will get easier over time
11:50 AM buzzmarshall: at least with the rpi's there is basically one huge dev scene as most work on projects in their own way but its one basic target
11:51 AM buzzmarshall: the other sbc's have so many different amlogic and rockchip or allwinner boards kicking around it really can be a pain trying to work with those boards depending on what your trying to do
11:52 AM buzzmarshall: if its media related you stand a better chance as most are all kinda in that area with their projects
11:53 AM buzzmarshall: but projects using more gpio and discrete pin control tend to be behind on those boards if your tryng to glean info for whatever your doing so you kinda have to take all that on yourself which some would just rather not do
11:54 AM perry_j1987: so pi4 or nuthin pretty much heh
11:54 AM perry_j1987: for linuxcnc
11:58 AM buzzmarshall: im not a big broadcom fan so i don't spend alot of time on them but have compiled linuxcnc on a rpi4 after installing linux on the board
11:58 AM buzzmarshall: other then the bbb's pru its probably a better board then the beagle's
11:59 AM buzzmarshall: and definately cheaper
12:05 PM perry_j1987: isnt there something that lets you use some stm32 like PRU's
12:05 PM perry_j1987: with pi
12:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it's in early beta, remora
12:07 PM CaptHindsight[m]: PRU = microcontroller
12:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/42276-remora-rpi-software-stepping-using-external-microcontroller-via-spi link to early stm32 port is near the end of the discussion
12:11 PM perry_j1987: like Klipper for 3d printers
12:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: more devs doesn't = not always better
12:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my best experience using the Rpi was using Gentoo vs Raspian
12:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: why come the gentoo devs can get everything working right?
12:26 PM roycroft: the only pi that i'm currently using is a pi4 running octoprint on raspian, and it works fine
12:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I was shocked by how much snappier my Rpi4 ran on Gentoo
12:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even with a 4K screen
12:30 PM unterhaus: the tomatoes are all ripening at once, so the BLT's are getting more extreme
12:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: are you going to jar them?
12:32 PM unterhaus: freeze some whole, make marinara, make gravy for indian food
12:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lost my sense of taste and smell, except for salty, any experiments to try? I'm acutely aware of food texture now
12:32 PM Tom_L: due to covid or other?
12:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: covid
12:33 PM Tom_L: has it come back any?
12:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: only day 3
12:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: day 10 of symptoms
12:34 PM unterhaus: did you get antibody treatment? It's free in U.S.
12:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: all studies are full, have to call back tomorrow
12:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it only got as bad as a bad cold, only a few hours of low fever
12:35 PM CaptHindsight[m]: weak as hell
12:36 PM JT-Shop: my favorite banker lady's husband brought it back from texas and gave it to her
12:36 PM JT-Shop: they were both in bed or on couch for 5 days, couldn't do a thing
12:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: don't know who I caught it from
12:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: half my sons office are anti-vax
12:37 PM JT-Shop: I was in the first group in southeast missouri to get the vaccine
12:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I got mine back in march
12:38 PM unterhaus: Cap'n you're vaxxed
12:38 PM unterhaus: oops
12:39 PM unterhaus: sounds like you have almost worst normal symptoms
12:39 PM unterhaus: as opposed to the people with bad immune systems or older
12:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah too many anti-vaxers around me, this might be my 3rd time with it
12:39 PM unterhaus: great
12:40 PM JT-Shop: damn, that's rough
12:40 PM unterhaus: I started wondering if I got it last march
12:40 PM unterhaus: I was in a room with someone with it unmasked for a couple of hours. Nobody was even talking about masks, I don't think
12:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: jan of '20 firnds sister was in the ICU with unknown viral pneumonia, we were all sick for weeks
12:40 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no test yet back then
12:40 PM Tom_L: beds are full and numbers are rising again here
12:41 PM unterhaus: beds are full almost everywhere. Even here in happy valley
12:41 PM unterhaus: I should have gone to the ER for asthma last week, decided to tough it out
12:41 PM Tom_L: they had plenty of room for a while
12:41 PM unterhaus: don't do anything dangerous is all I'm saying
12:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not a good time to require surgery
12:42 PM unterhaus: we're in peak car crash season because all the students are coming back
12:42 PM Tom_L: or be in an accident
12:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: each time for me I've had it ZERO lung issues
12:43 PM perry_j1987: this whole pandemic has been the healthiest time in decades for me
12:43 PM unterhaus: my niece had a friend die last march. I think she had viral pneumonia
12:43 PM unterhaus: mid-20s
12:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: head cold with weakness for weeks
12:44 PM unterhaus: it's not like people that age have problems with viral pneumonia, normally
12:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: perry_j1987: I dropped weight and noticed far fewer things like having a cold
12:44 PM unterhaus: masking up during cold season was great. No colds
12:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: so when I felt this one come on I got tested
12:45 PM perry_j1987: ya im down from 230ish to 179 right now
12:45 PM unterhaus: I was shopping and someone the next aisle over coughed up a lung and I was glad I was wearing
12:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: did the PCR test to be more certain as well
12:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: my guess was I went to Design2Part 2 weeks ago
12:47 PM unterhaus: maybe it's selfish, but losing my taste is one of my worst fears
12:47 PM CaptHindsight[m]: was inside for 1 hour
12:47 PM perry_j1987: i was thinking of going to design2part but it wasnt "really" that fun the other times i went lol
12:47 PM unterhaus: is design2part a store?
12:47 PM perry_j1987: its a tradeshow
12:47 PM unterhaus: sparse masking?
12:48 PM perry_j1987: are you going to rapid in sept CaptHindsight[m]
12:48 PM perry_j1987: at the mccormic center
12:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: heh, debating
12:48 PM perry_j1987: thats the one im most interested in doing
12:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: might go wearing PAPR now
12:48 PM unterhaus: you could go spread covid
12:49 PM perry_j1987: lol
12:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I don't need another week of being to weak to walk a mile
12:49 PM perry_j1987: bunch of spacemen looking people walkin around in PAPR
12:50 PM unterhaus: McCormick place is a mile from one end to the other, or it seems that way
12:50 PM unterhaus: I would like to go back to IMTB
12:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I need a wheelchair or scooter to make that now
12:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i walked 2 miles the other day and I was worried I'd pass out on the way back
12:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but being 90F and humid didn'thelp
12:54 PM perry_j1987: get a one wheel heh
12:54 PM roycroft: other than attending a number of concerts at the arie crown theater, i never attended an event at mccormick place when i lived in chicago
12:54 PM perry_j1987: or one of those new electric unicycles
12:55 PM roycroft: of course, it did not exist for several years after the fire, but the new building was open for a few years before i moved away
12:56 PM roycroft: i do remember that it is a big complex, though
12:56 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if i go wearing full suit, I'll likely have signage on me
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: coffee tastes like hot water
12:57 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the cream gives it some texture
12:57 PM roycroft: i hope you get your sense of taste back
12:58 PM roycroft: most folks do, but sometimes it takes 8 months or a year
12:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the hottest hot sauce had zero flavor, but burned my throat
12:58 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some others said they trained to get back their smell and taste sooner
12:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: chefs, wine people, etc
12:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i can't even smell bleach
12:59 PM CloudEvil: Hope it recovers. (40y into utterly disabling post viral syndrome here).
01:00 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://hms.harvard.edu/news/how-covid-19-causes-loss-smell
01:00 PM CloudEvil: (which looks clinically indistinguishable to 1/4 of LCpeople at 30 days.)
01:02 PM unterhaus: saves on spices, I guess
01:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm glad the this got mRNA out of the labs and into production
01:02 PM unterhaus: interesting you can taste salt, but I think the body is attuned to salt because too much or too little is bad
01:03 PM JT-Shop: I think my new bp medicine is working backwards
01:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sweet comes across as thick and creamy
01:03 PM unterhaus: JT, what is it?
01:03 PM JT-Shop: 160/100
01:03 PM JT-Shop: should be 140/80 tops
01:03 PM unterhaus: that's not good, I meant which med?
01:03 PM JT-Shop: dunno
01:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: call your doc
01:04 PM unterhaus: maybe they gave you salt pills
01:04 PM JT-Shop: she switched me from 340 to two 180's
01:04 PM unterhaus: well, it's not lisinopril then
01:04 PM unterhaus: mine didn't work so they had to add a diuretic
01:04 PM unterhaus: which I always thought was stupid, but it works and doesn't have side effects
01:05 PM JT-Shop: I take like 5 scripts
01:05 PM JT-Shop: well that's good
01:06 PM unterhaus: I thought, well, I'll just have to drink more. But it doesn't work that way somehow
01:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: low BP runs in my family, I'd like to trade vasculature for a bit
01:07 PM unterhaus: when I first started taking the diuretic, I was taking double. Low blood pressure is no joke
01:08 PM unterhaus: The way I'm storing my hardwood is terrible. Have to disassemble the pile to get to anything
01:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: on your kitchen counters?
01:08 PM unterhaus: and I went in there looking for din rail anyway
01:09 PM unterhaus: no, it's under the porch
01:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have so much to do
01:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lost a week
01:14 PM perry_j1987: did you have the vax CaptHindsight[m] and got that varient?
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Vax in March, don't know the variant, they randomly test your samples and don't have that info for you
01:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: PCR test just gives positive or negative, DNA sequencing gives you variant
01:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they randomly sequence at their disrection
01:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they might know but can't/won't tellme
01:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i tried to track it down
01:18 PM CloudEvil: It's of limited use as a clinical question - as both vaccination and natural infection give somewhat poor protection from anything other than severe outcomes.
01:19 PM CloudEvil: They help enormously to reduce severity and symptoms. But breakthrough infections are a problem with both.
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: think of think of how this would be different if rather than losing taste and smell, one lost sight and sound
01:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: movie plot i recall
01:25 PM perry_j1987: ya
01:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Sense
01:27 PM CloudEvil: Based on personal experience, 'are you sure it's not anxiety/depression'
01:28 PM CloudEvil: (would be the response)
01:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah
01:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: CloudEvil: what happens if you get a bad doc? Do you just go to a different town and get re-evaluated?
01:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: bad/inexperienced
01:31 PM CloudEvil: There are no good doctors. There are only less bad ones. The best I can hope for at this point is 'sorry we can't cure you'.
01:31 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I view them more like mechanics
01:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you have to dig for scientists and engineers
01:33 PM CloudEvil: Slightly salty at the moment as the guidelines for CFS/ME, which was due to be updated last week, has instead been 'paused' from publication of the draft guidelines, which were reporting that they had stopped recommending two treatments entirely because there was no good evidence for them. On the grounds that they have to 'work with the community' and 'doctors have to accept the guidelines'.
01:33 PM CloudEvil: yeah
01:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the most behind appears to be neurology and psychiatry
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they need to merge, especially the latter
01:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: more science and less philosophy please
01:37 PM CloudEvil: Indeed.
01:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I know it's hard, but we need to do the research
01:39 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm for a full out project like the moon mission or the Genome project
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://nanoporetech.com/products/minion i want these in a smartphone
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: though they would likely use it to track me further vs good
01:43 PM CloudEvil: Technically, you can.
01:43 PM CloudEvil: As an add-on anyway.
01:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: USB dongle
01:44 PM CloudEvil: But the above is only of limited use . In principle similar devices could do virome sequencing.
01:44 PM CloudEvil: That doesn't address thehard questionof what the immune system thinks it's doing.
01:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: another big project
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: RE the immune system
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: glad at least we are using mRNA
01:45 PM CloudEvil: Systems. It's fourteen different systems in a bag that has the surprising property it doesn't kill us every day.
01:45 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we had the vaccine two days after they published the sequence for sars-II
01:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah hard, but not impossible
01:46 PM CaptHindsight[m]: can't be as difficult as having teenagers
01:49 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], they've already got a satelite dedicated to following you around
01:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we can be making DNA synthesizers that at least run as fast as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bee6PWUgPo8
01:50 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: mine must be bored :)
02:00 PM perry_j1987: so i need to setup some gcode for this little gangtooling setup i made next
02:00 PM perry_j1987: all of the tools are in the same length on z
02:00 PM perry_j1987: so my safe z should be pretty easy to deal with
02:00 PM CloudEvil: :)
02:01 PM perry_j1987: i have to do something to disable tool change prompts though?
02:01 PM perry_j1987: or how does that work
02:02 PM Tom_L: just don't use halmanualtoolchange
02:03 PM perry_j1987: i still have qctp i can use too though
02:06 PM JT-Shop: I use my own button for tool change
02:07 PM Roguish: JT-Shop, good morning. are you going to continue work on your QT gcode generator?
02:08 PM Roguish: like fill in the drilling and tapping....
02:08 PM JT-Shop: yes, working on canned cycles atm
02:08 PM Roguish: coool
02:08 PM Roguish: THANKS
02:08 PM JT-Shop: yw
02:09 PM JT-Shop: I really like the drill info, what do you think
02:09 PM Roguish: it's all good.
02:09 PM JT-Shop: btw you can double left click on a drill info line and use that in your canned cycle
02:10 PM JT-Shop: that way you don't have to type the drill info in
02:11 PM Roguish: I don't remember, but do you include drill point angle?
02:11 PM Roguish: as a variable
02:13 PM captain_morgan: ooof, I thought I fixed this but I keep getting jolted aleady by my spindle motor turning on by itself
02:13 PM JT-Shop: no
02:13 PM captain_morgan: I fixed it so closing lcnc before turning off the panel doesn't do it
02:13 PM captain_morgan: but just found if I turn the panel on before running lcnc it still will turn on
02:18 PM unterhaus: I wonder what size bolts this heat sink case uses
02:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: captain_morgan: maybe look at things like polarity chosen for enables
02:19 PM unterhaus: don't think my thread sizer goes that small
02:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they should stay disabled until forced ON by LCNC
02:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: even during PC power up and down
02:20 PM captain_morgan: CaptHindsight[m] I had already changed it once because on/off were switch, I think I need to change the polarity on the controller (PMDX-126) then change the polarity back in lcnc
02:21 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I had a mill where the idiots wired Mach to turn the spindle ON before the OS or application started
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: mach would crash and the spindle would keep running
02:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: not very smart
02:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: same morons kept the application running after hitting Estop
02:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: the controller would keep stepping after Estop was enabled
02:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: E=Stop enabled and the dongle would still send pulses to Mach and Mach would be changing positions while the motors were actually OFF
02:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: try getting them back to the same home again after that!
02:26 PM JT-Shop: Roguish, I used that in my old one to get full depth
02:26 PM CaptHindsight[m]: guy who wired it actually worked as an automation engineer
02:27 PM CaptHindsight[m]: put $3k of AB PLC's in it
02:29 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i think the 5" touch screen is $1500
02:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no it's $2500
02:30 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://ie.rs-online.com/web/p/hmi-displays/7859871/
02:33 PM unterhaus: I wish they hadn't thrown the shear away at work
02:33 PM JT-Shop: I spent 3 hours trying to set the date and time on a AB Panelview Plus because the idiot programmer didn't put a goto configuration mode button anywhere in the maintenance screen
02:39 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, want me to check?
02:40 PM unterhaus: Tom_L if it's not too hard. They must be 2 or 2.5 coarse, right?
02:40 PM Tom_L: i'll look
02:44 PM Tom_L: yeah my thread gage doesn't go that fine either but it's 2.3mm OD
02:44 PM Tom_L: on the threads
02:46 PM Tom_L: there is a 2.2mm .45 thread between 2 and 2.5 though
02:47 PM Tom_L: 2 x .4 2.2 x .45 and 2.5 x .45
02:48 PM Tom_L: and a 2 x .45
02:51 PM Tom_L: my guess would be 2.2mm
02:51 PM unterhaus: that's weird
02:52 PM Tom_L: did you lose one already?
02:53 PM unterhaus: no, I want to put it on standoffs
02:53 PM Tom_L: and you ppl curse merican inches!
02:53 PM unterhaus: but now I might just use double sided tape, I don't think the bottom of the case matters much
02:54 PM unterhaus: both systems fall apart when you get to small fasteners
02:54 PM unterhaus: number bolts are probably better than metric for that
02:55 PM Tom_L: definitely smaller / finer than the fine pc screws
02:55 PM Tom_L: those are probably 3mm
02:57 PM unterhaus: it's going to be inside a box, doesn't need to be elegant
02:57 PM Tom_L: no but it does need to do the job
02:57 PM JT-Shop: last 4 3.7 din rail bars are in the vmc
02:57 PM Tom_L: one of the pc screws measure 2.8mm
02:58 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you gettin paid overtime for Sat work???
02:58 PM unterhaus: Tom_L, isn't your pi4 hanging from wires?
02:59 PM Tom_L: for that test it was
02:59 PM Tom_L: if i were to use it, i'd mount it
02:59 PM JT-Shop: I think I get 2 cents each profit lol
02:59 PM Tom_L: but i might use automotive trim tape to hold it in place
02:59 PM Tom_L: wouldn't be the first time
03:00 PM Tom_L: i mounted a couple SMPS to the side of the cabinet that way
03:00 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Control1.jpg
03:01 PM Tom_L: by the 5v rail there
03:01 PM Tom_L: most of that crap on the door is gone now
03:02 PM Tom_L: all that was to support the sherline spindle motor :)
03:02 PM unterhaus: where's the water pump?
03:02 PM Tom_L: what water pump?
03:02 PM unterhaus: for the spindle cooling
03:02 PM Tom_L: it went with the sherline motor
03:03 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Spindle/Motor_mounted1.jpg
03:03 PM unterhaus: I have some sheet metal din rail mounting clips, if I could figure out where I put them
03:03 PM unterhaus: drill and tap the bottom plate of the case
03:04 PM unterhaus: but I'll probably just use super duper double sided tape
03:04 PM Tom_L: that trim tape works great
03:05 PM Tom_L: until you want to remove it from the case :)
03:10 PM JT-Shop: unterhaus, how many emails did you get with tracking?
03:22 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://medicalxpress.com/news/2021-08-antibody-broad-range-covid-virus.html
03:35 PM JT-Shop: that's great news... too bad there is so many stupid people that won't get a vaccine
03:36 PM Roguish: wow. the sun just came thru the overcast and smoke
03:51 PM perry_j1987: i need to modify this mgivr2016-2 tool holder so it has about 1.5mm more clearance
04:00 PM roycroft: some of them are not stupid
04:00 PM roycroft: some are ignorant
04:00 PM roycroft: many are just assholes
04:00 PM roycroft: but there are a lot of stupid ones
04:01 PM roycroft: i've given up trying to distinguish between ignorant, stupid, and assholish
04:01 PM roycroft: they are all the same as far as i'm concerned
04:18 PM perry_j1987: gah some new bug creeped into fusion360 tool library
04:19 PM perry_j1987: screen buggs out when i open tool library window with this latest version odd
04:21 PM perry_j1987: it opens fine the first time after opening fusion360
04:21 PM perry_j1987: then if i open it again its all garbled looking
04:34 PM unterhaus: JT-Shop, I only got one, from paypal
04:46 PM JT-Shop: ok, I couldn't remember if the store sent one automagicly or not
04:47 PM unterhaus: if you use paypal shipping, it's automatic
04:48 PM JT-Shop: and expensive...
04:55 PM unterhaus: I thought it was cheaper than the PO
04:55 PM Tom_L: not likely if another set of hands gets involved
04:55 PM unterhaus: I wish some amazon vender would break out of the pack and sell 2' long din rail
04:56 PM Tom_L: what lengths are you finding?
04:56 PM unterhaus: Jumps from 12" to 1m
04:56 PM unterhaus: I really don't want 10x1m din rail
04:56 PM Tom_L: i think my local place had it in 3' pieces
04:57 PM Tom_L: what's wrong with 1m?
04:58 PM Tom_L: maybe mine was longer than that since i've got ~2.5' left
04:59 PM unterhaus: nothing wrong with 1m, it's only available in lots of 10
04:59 PM Tom_L: ahh
04:59 PM Tom_L: tell jt to swing by and pick this up and he can ship it with the din rails :D
05:00 PM Tom_L: mounts...
05:00 PM Tom_L: no local electrical supplies?
05:00 PM unterhaus: my package is already in Post office limbo somewhere in the midwest, so too late for that
05:01 PM Tom_L: i got mine from a local delta supplier
05:01 PM unterhaus: that's a thought, wonder if they would have it
05:01 PM Tom_L: not much of a supplier if they don't
05:01 PM unterhaus: well, I do live in a rural hellhole
05:02 PM Tom_L: not a big box store mind you...
05:02 PM unterhaus: but there are 2 new industrial suppliers now
05:02 PM unterhaus: fastenall doesn't have it do they
05:02 PM Tom_L: i doubt if they stock it
05:02 PM Tom_L: if they do
05:04 PM Tom_L: HD sells it in 10 packs too
05:04 PM Tom_L: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ASI-1-m-Length-x-35-mm-Width-x-7-5-mm-Height-Steel-Slotted-Standard-DIN-Rail-10-Pack-PR005-1M/312561254?MERCH=REC-_-searchViewed-_-NA-_-312561254-_-N&
05:04 PM unterhaus: I think I'll just look harder for some in the basement
05:05 PM Tom_L: heh
05:06 PM unterhaus: I'm almost positive I have a 3' piece
05:09 PM roycroft: mcmaster sell din rails
05:09 PM roycroft: i would not count on fastenall having any in stock
05:10 PM roycroft: their primary product is customer abuse
05:10 PM roycroft: all their other products are just lures to let them deliver the primary product
05:14 PM JT-Shop: unterhaus, I use stamps.com(Not Responding)
05:14 PM Thorhian: I've noticed that local electrical stores tend to have DIN rails. The Platt store I have in town has them.
05:20 PM _unreal_: printing my newest design
05:22 PM _unreal_: solarwind, hello
05:22 PM solarwind: Hey, how's it going?
05:22 PM _unreal_: ok
05:22 PM _unreal_: printing a new design
05:22 PM solarwind: Been an exhausting week
05:23 PM _unreal_: o,O try working often outside in south florida
05:23 PM _unreal_: during summer
05:24 PM _unreal_: I'm making a soldering tools holder
05:24 PM _unreal_: for smd tools
05:24 PM roycroft: yes, some electrical distributors carry din rails
05:24 PM roycroft: reluctantly
05:24 PM roycroft: but they do
05:24 PM _unreal_: roycroft, I'm drowning in din rail stuff
05:25 PM _unreal_: you name it I DO likely have it and is for sale
05:25 PM XXCoder: interesting
05:25 PM _unreal_: even expensive parts like timers, relays
05:25 PM _unreal_: all DIN RAIL mount based
05:25 PM roycroft: if you dabble in such things as din rails you must not be a real 'murican
05:25 PM roycroft: not with all that european stuff
05:26 PM solarwind: perry_j1987 I think you text messaged me, but I wrecked my phone. Feel free to PM me
05:26 PM _unreal_: ?
05:26 PM _unreal_: roycroft, ?
05:26 PM solarwind: perry_j1987 I just saw a message notification from you but couldn't actually read it
05:26 PM roycroft: you're aware that din is socialist european stuff, aren't you?
05:27 PM XXCoder: DIN is all metric i guess
05:27 PM XXCoder: socialist units
05:28 PM roycroft: deutsches institut für normung
05:28 PM roycroft: german institute for standards
05:29 PM roycroft: it's the german body that represents the country in the iso
05:29 PM _unreal_: well regardless like I said if you guys are looking for any din rail hardware not the rail its self I have lots of very expensive parts that I have no use for .... currently
05:30 PM roycroft: i know people who will not use din based hardware because it's not american
05:30 PM perry_j1987: metric is so much better lol
05:31 PM roycroft: these are the same people who attach a ginormous american flag that's longer then their truck bed to the back of their toyota pickup
05:31 PM _unreal_: I only use metric when doing cnc work
05:31 PM perry_j1987: the math is easier for sure
05:31 PM XXCoder: or same size flag, but conferete battle flag
05:31 PM roycroft: and leave it ther day and night, rain and shine, until it's so tattered and torn that it's unrecognizable
05:32 PM roycroft: they usualy don't fly that flag on their pickup - they just have a big sticker of it on their back window or tailgate
05:32 PM unterhaus: 'muricans couldn't agree on a standard so they lost to DIN
05:32 PM roycroft: at least around here
05:32 PM _unreal_: do any of you guys do PLC stuff?
05:34 PM unterhaus: fastenall wanted $22 for one piece of din rail
05:36 PM JT-Shop: damn
05:38 PM XXCoder: ow
05:39 PM roycroft: they build some of the customer abuse into the price
05:40 PM roycroft: but if you want to feel better about that price check grainger :)
05:41 PM XXCoder: i guess fastenall has lube with price and grainger dont
05:41 PM unterhaus: grainger has it at$6.50, much more reasonable
05:42 PM roycroft: that's surprising
05:42 PM unterhaus: I have a friend that uses grainger because his boss doesn't have to sign off on things like at mcmaster carr
05:42 PM roycroft: the last time i tried to buy from grainger they still refused to sell to me
05:42 PM unterhaus: yeah, they are silly about that
05:43 PM unterhaus: we have an old-school industrial supply where you walk up to a window in a small hallway
05:43 PM roycroft: they demand a sales tax exemption certificate issued by my state as proof that i'm a legitimate business
05:43 PM roycroft: oregon has no sales tax, hence, no such certificates
05:43 PM unterhaus: you ask for something and they disappear into the house to get it
05:44 PM roycroft: thy would not accept my articles of organization
05:44 PM roycroft: or look up my business on the oregon secretary of state website
05:44 PM unterhaus: how far away is the closest mcmaster carr?
05:44 PM roycroft: for me, reno
05:44 PM unterhaus: we get stuff overnight
05:44 PM roycroft: which is 2 days ups these days
05:44 PM roycroft: it used to be 1 day
05:44 PM roycroft: mcmaster are great
05:45 PM roycroft: great product mix, decent prices, outstanding customer service
05:45 PM unterhaus: never did understand why ups would overnight stuff for them for $7
05:46 PM roycroft: i don't mind paying a little more at macmaster than i would at some other vendors, beacause they're so easy to deal with
05:46 PM roycroft: plus, being able to download 2d/3d cad drawings of virtually everything they carry is a huge benefit
05:47 PM roycroft: there is a fastenall in eugene, but i would rather die than pay them for something that would save my life
05:50 PM Thorhian: I wouldn't mind a giant american flag on a truck on certain holidays roycroft, but I like DIN rail stuff lol. What would be the "american" version?
05:51 PM roycroft: there isn't an american version
05:51 PM roycroft: which is a big reason we use din-standard stuff here
05:51 PM roycroft: and regarding the flag
05:52 PM roycroft: i'm rather pissed that the maga asshats have usurped it
05:52 PM roycroft: and i hate how they abuse it by flying it at night and in the rain and when it's in tatters
05:52 PM roycroft: they do not respect it at all
05:52 PM roycroft: i fly the flag on holidays
05:52 PM roycroft: and other special occasions
05:53 PM roycroft: i put it out after sunrise and take it down before sunset
05:53 PM roycroft: and i keep it in a protected area where it doesn't get rained on
05:53 PM unterhaus: r/COVIDAteMyFace is pretty busy these days
05:54 PM Thorhian: Not all trump voters are total A-Holes, and yeah a lot of people really don't know how to take care of the flag properly. I don't know what that subreddit is.
05:54 PM roycroft: i'm not going there
05:54 PM roycroft: and i don't lump all the voters for the former president together
05:55 PM roycroft: all the ones who abuse the flag are maga asshats
05:55 PM roycroft: but that's not all the people who voted for him
05:56 PM roycroft: i'm the person in my group of friends who has to constantly remind the rest that not all voters for the former president are racist assholes
05:56 PM roycroft: and they still excoriate me for not agreeing with them on that
05:56 PM unterhaus: I found out my hungarian wax peppers are plenty hot
05:57 PM roycroft: so you can use them sparingly
05:57 PM unterhaus: bugs got all the bell peppers, but I have a lot of hot peppers
05:57 PM roycroft: stretch the batch out
05:57 PM unterhaus: I'm going to make stuffed hungarian peppers and just tough it out
05:58 PM JT-Shop: last year it was tobacco hornworms this year it's whiteflys
05:58 PM unterhaus: I saw some evidence I was having problems with slugs
05:58 PM roycroft: around here it's the lack of precipitation that has caused the most problems with crops
05:58 PM roycroft: i haven't seen a slug in 3-4 years
05:59 PM unterhaus: we had too much and too little precipitation. did a number on my tomato plants
05:59 PM unterhaus: but they have yielded okay
05:59 PM unterhaus: I tried to kill the slugs with beer
06:01 PM roycroft: governor cuomo has pledged to resign as of mindnight tomorrow, and i can't wait for him to be gone, but with the hurricane coming tomorrow, i wonder if it might be best for him to stay on for a few more days
06:01 PM roycroft: apparently he and the lieutenant governor hardly communicate with each other at all
06:01 PM roycroft: it's a tough time for an instant transition
06:12 PM Roguish: we have shit show here in Cal also.
06:13 PM Tom_L: fires getting any better?
06:13 PM roycroft: not really
06:13 PM roycroft: some are getting bigger, others smaller, and there are new ones every day
06:14 PM XXCoder: calfornia one is bad :(
06:14 PM captain_morgan: woke up to ~320 AQI and it' sonly 160 now
06:14 PM captain_morgan: that good.... right?
06:14 PM roycroft: but there's a gubernatorial recall going on
06:14 PM roycroft: with 46 candidates
06:14 PM roycroft: and if he is recalled, it only takes a plurality to win
06:14 PM Tom_L: are you one?
06:14 PM captain_morgan: ugh, im' drinking myself into motivation of looking at that stupid shitshow (vote no!)
06:15 PM roycroft: so it's possible there could be a new governor who only gets 3% of the vote
06:15 PM Tom_L: you were making ballots the other day if i'm not mistaken :)
06:15 PM roycroft: i am not a californian
06:15 PM captain_morgan: ah
06:15 PM roycroft: and i'm not a politician
06:15 PM roycroft: i certainly don't have the temperment for politics
06:15 PM roycroft: i can't smile and shake hands with peope while i'm lying to them
06:16 PM Tom_L: that was for your fair thing (me forgets exactly) wasn't it?
06:16 PM roycroft: yes
06:16 PM roycroft: oregon country fair board of directors
06:16 PM roycroft: and i'm actually working on that right now
06:17 PM roycroft: running an election i can do
06:17 PM roycroft: being on the ballot i cannot do
06:25 PM captain_morgan: first cuts! https://mastodon.social/@captain_morgan/106796642831502757
06:26 PM Tom_L: mine required a bandaid :)
06:26 PM captain_morgan: oohhh, yeah. haven't donated blood yet
06:26 PM captain_morgan: I believe the sooner you do it, the easier you get it
06:33 PM Roguish_shop: captain_morgan, you can always go with Jenner.....lolo
06:45 PM captain_morgan: i'm just going to ignore that
06:45 PM captain_morgan: there's dust collection to be routed!
06:49 PM Roguish_shop: a good friend's brother knows he,she,it pretty well. says he,she,it still has 'outdoor plumbing.'
06:53 PM captain_morgan: 'he,she,it' is transphobic, you should stop
07:06 PM spumco[m]: Anyone know how to complete registration to join? I keep getting a failure during email verification.
07:13 PM _unreal_: spumco[m], to what?
07:13 PM _unreal_: irc?
07:15 PM unterhaus: libera, I assume
07:15 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, drinking? me too
07:15 PM _unreal_: PBR's currently
07:15 PM _unreal_: Americas best shit beer
07:15 PM _unreal_: lol
07:15 PM _unreal_: ugh....
07:15 PM _unreal_: wish this print would finish
07:16 PM captain_morgan: nope, building dust collection
07:17 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, WHAT stage?
07:17 PM captain_morgan: which is currently modding a cheap (and flexible) harbour fright dust collection
07:17 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, I built a mini dust collection system WORKS FUCKING AMAZING
07:17 PM captain_morgan: ^ then running the first hard pipe
07:17 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, are you going to a cyclone
07:17 PM captain_morgan: eventually
07:17 PM _unreal_: >:| dude do it first
07:18 PM _unreal_: if your using a cheap HF dust collector then just buy a cheap 5gal bucket adapter
07:18 PM captain_morgan: I"m basically in; get everything tidy function quick, then we can start feeling out the space and find permanent locations
07:18 PM _unreal_: What I mean is YOUR going to run into big problems
07:19 PM _unreal_: I deal with the HF mini dust collectors we have 8 at work
07:19 PM _unreal_: they have a protective screen at the intake
07:19 PM _unreal_: it will clog
07:19 PM _unreal_: if you are not making PURE dust
07:20 PM _unreal_: AND your filling a bag with particals
07:20 PM captain_morgan: yeah, I'm used to that from my old job, Id just pull the pipe and clear from time to time
07:20 PM captain_morgan: again, this is short term
07:20 PM _unreal_: that quickly looses max air flow as it fills
07:20 PM captain_morgan: I need to CNC up and running so I can start building fixtures to get the space setup
07:20 PM captain_morgan: at the moment this biggest problem is lack of storage, so there is no room for a cyclone that isn't in a walkway
07:22 PM CloudEvil: Have you considered the ceiling?
07:22 PM captain_morgan: and the real dream is the next iteration will move the dust collection outdoors
07:22 PM captain_morgan: yes! that's the other big rub
07:22 PM captain_morgan: not only are the ceilings low, there is ducting running down the middle of the garage
07:22 PM CloudEvil: ah
07:23 PM _unreal_: there is always space for micro cyclone
07:24 PM captain_morgan: I have the setup I want in my head and it requires permanent wall space
07:24 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, how big is your CNC?
07:24 PM captain_morgan: the ideal place for it runs up against the ducting and rolling garage door, unless moving the CNC to the other side
07:25 PM captain_morgan: 4x8+
07:25 PM _unreal_: ok so you do need 4"
07:25 PM captain_morgan: it's an old pre-AVID name change 4x8 PRO
07:26 PM _unreal_: captain_morgan, remind me tomorrow I'll see if I can remember to take a picture of the dust collection system I built at work
07:26 PM captain_morgan: yeah cool, would love to see it
07:26 PM _unreal_: chain locker drums are ideal
07:27 PM captain_morgan: I spend a bit of time last night scroll over various systems, but that was a bit more focused on getting the house off the machine
07:27 PM _unreal_: oh shit.... nice.. KIND of like this http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/attachments/f12/9602d1246042780-shop-fox-dust-collector-jams-100_0623.jpg
07:27 PM _unreal_: KIND of but not using the lid
07:27 PM _unreal_: as pictured
07:27 PM _unreal_: more or less the same drum
07:28 PM _unreal_: we have two GIANT full size dust collectors
07:28 PM _unreal_: I did all the drops and blast gates etc...
07:28 PM _unreal_: they mainly collect FRP material
07:29 PM _unreal_: FRP-FIBERGLASS
07:31 PM _unreal_: house off the machine?
07:32 PM unterhaus: you can tell there is a hurricane, wunderground loading slowly
07:34 PM unterhaus: fam is getting thunderstorms at the beach, but no hurricane
07:56 PM unterhaus: I need a video converter cable dagnabbit
07:57 PM Tom_L: no hdmi ehh?
07:59 PM _unreal_: ?
07:59 PM _unreal_: unterhaus, ahhh???
07:59 PM unterhaus: I have a full size hdmi to dvi cable
08:00 PM unterhaus: and a mini to full size hdmi
08:00 PM unterhaus: probably have a mini to something useful somewhere
08:01 PM unterhaus: need to go from mini hdmi to dvi
08:02 PM _unreal_: then you just need an extender adapter
08:02 PM _unreal_: HDMI TO HDMI adapter
08:02 PM _unreal_: or get the very direct adapter you need
08:03 PM unterhaus: obvs
08:03 PM unterhaus: kinda wanted to boot the computer rn
08:03 PM _unreal_: hay call me capt. obvious
08:04 PM unterhaus: nick already taken
08:04 PM _unreal_: ok... capt. obvious in wait
08:05 PM _unreal_: hum about 36min left on this print
08:06 PM XXCoder: if your nick is registered, just use ghost
08:06 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, lol thanks but it was a figure of speech :)
08:08 PM unterhaus: I swear I gave my wife a mouse for her wfh computer, but it's not there
08:18 PM XXCoder: maybe it ran off into mouse hole
08:26 PM _unreal_: palm to face... unterhaus check the mouse traps
08:26 PM _unreal_: LOL
08:29 PM unterhaus: we haven't had too many mice because of all the snakes
08:29 PM unterhaus: gotta love 'em
08:30 PM unterhaus: apparently there are only 2 hdmi equipped monitors in the house. 43" and 27"
08:34 PM Tom_L: i'd go for the 43"
08:35 PM unterhaus: it has picture in picture, so that would work
08:35 PM roycroft: if you're trying to use it with a pi, you need at least a 65" screen
08:35 PM roycroft: the pi is so tiny you have to compensate with a giant screen
08:35 PM unterhaus: I could be on this computer and also the pi at the same time
08:36 PM unterhaus: of course, picture in picture is really annoying
08:36 PM roycroft: or you'll be making shrinkage excuses
08:36 PM unterhaus: I have progressed past the excuses stage
08:36 PM roycroft: you ordered some piagra?
08:36 PM unterhaus: I have achieved true level
08:37 PM roycroft: the ref. jesse jackson and his wife have been hospitalized after contracting covid-19
08:38 PM roycroft: and phil valentine has died from covid-19
08:39 PM roycroft: and henri has just caused the we love nyc concert to be ended early
08:41 PM roycroft: but there is good news - over 1 million doses of the vaccine have been administered for three days in a row now
08:41 PM roycroft: that's not happened in months
08:41 PM unterhaus: that's great about the vax rate, it was 400k when it started to pick up again
08:41 PM unterhaus: JJ was vaccinated, no word on his wife
08:42 PM unterhaus: but he's old
08:42 PM roycroft: this pandemic is not going to end until most people have been vaccinated
08:42 PM roycroft: and even then, it's going to infect most of them that don't
08:42 PM roycroft: we need to get the number who aren't vaccinated down to a very small number
08:42 PM unterhaus: I don't know why nobody has implemented my idea of snipers with vax in tranquilizer guns out front of cabelas and whole foods
08:43 PM roycroft: and it appears that the vaccines will be approved for children under 12 soon
08:43 PM roycroft: i just want this to end
08:43 PM roycroft: the anti-vaxers have prolonged it for way too long
08:44 PM unterhaus: yeah, and inevitably when someone says they are tired of the pandemic on a facebook news link they haven't been vaccinated
08:44 PM roycroft: they just need to suck it up and do the right thing so we can all move on with life
08:44 PM roycroft: well i'm not on facebook
08:44 PM roycroft: but i'm tired of it
08:44 PM roycroft: and i've been vaccinated for months
08:44 PM unterhaus: me too
08:44 PM unterhaus: I thought it was going to be over, but now, someone had to politicize it
08:44 PM roycroft: i'm looking forward to my booster
08:45 PM roycroft: it was politicized by the previous administration from day one
08:45 PM unterhaus: yeah, my second shot didn't make me sick, so I want a booster
08:45 PM roycroft: most of our deaths and suffering could have been avoided if we dealt with it right away
08:45 PM roycroft: look at new zealand
08:45 PM roycroft: they had a few cases
08:45 PM unterhaus: the order of politicizing it and it being over doesn't really matter
08:45 PM roycroft: the prime minister locked down the country and isolated it from all foreigners
08:45 PM unterhaus: well, we're a lot like australia
08:45 PM roycroft: not all undesirable ones, but *all*
08:46 PM roycroft: and the pandemic went away quickly
08:46 PM roycroft: the country fully reopened, except for the foreign travel ban
08:46 PM roycroft: no masks
08:46 PM roycroft: restaurants open
08:46 PM roycroft: theatres open
08:46 PM roycroft: life was normal
08:46 PM roycroft: then last week one case was confirmed
08:47 PM roycroft: and the source was a traveler from sydney, because new zealand had reopened travel to and from australia
08:47 PM roycroft: it was the first case in six months
08:47 PM hazzy[m]: The great Dempanic.
08:47 PM roycroft: she immediately shut down the country again
08:47 PM roycroft: and then there are people who make comments like that
08:47 PM roycroft: that's why it's not over here
08:48 PM unterhaus: yeah, we are going to have it forever because people think it's political
08:48 PM hazzy[m]: I'm glad to be the one 😂
08:48 PM unterhaus: and they live to trigger the libs. Dying to trigger the libs
08:48 PM roycroft: i don't give a shit about triggering anyone
08:48 PM roycroft: i just want it to be over
08:49 PM unterhaus: you aren't the kind to trigger the libs
08:49 PM roycroft: but since i'm not a "dem" i can't be triggered by a comment like that
08:49 PM unterhaus: Have you heard of cleek's law?
08:50 PM roycroft: no
08:50 PM unterhaus: Turns out that Cleek's law actually was a death pact
08:50 PM unterhaus: Today’s conservatism is the opposite of what liberals want today, updated daily.
08:50 PM unterhaus: I had a republican tell me that was his political philosophy
08:51 PM unterhaus: unprompted
08:51 PM roycroft: that person is not a republican
08:51 PM unterhaus: oh, no, that's what they believe
08:51 PM Tom_L: maybe we can drop this now before it get to far down the hole
08:51 PM roycroft: yes, but they're wrong about almost everthing
08:51 PM roycroft: agreed, tom_l
08:52 PM unterhaus: good idea, sorry
08:52 PM Tom_L: carry on all night in pm if you care to
08:52 PM roycroft: it's pointless anyway
08:52 PM roycroft: and certainly off-topic
08:54 PM unterhaus: I asked for an adapter on buy nothing
08:54 PM unterhaus: facebook is good for something
08:55 PM roycroft: the rpi should have an rs232 port on-board that can be used as the console out of the box
08:56 PM roycroft: that's the thing that frustrates me the most about them - having to connect a display and keyboard to them to do the initial setup
08:57 PM unterhaus: yeah, I have done that with beagleboards, that's always a bad day though
08:58 PM unterhaus: if I was really excited about it, I could spend an hour cleaning my desk to make a place for it
08:59 PM unterhaus: I liked the beagleboard, we had 10 of them on roomba robots
08:59 PM unterhaus: then the IT folks got hacked so they locked down everyone else's computers
08:59 PM unterhaus: lock down your own computers, we didn't get hacked, you did
09:00 PM unterhaus: although they lost autonomy, got absorbed into the university IT
09:00 PM captain_morgan: womp. 4" sewer pipe is 4" ID. 4" dust vac hose is <4"
09:00 PM captain_morgan: ...ID
09:00 PM unterhaus: that doesn't sound right to me
09:01 PM unterhaus: okay, google says it's close enough for pvc
09:01 PM unterhaus: schedule 40
09:02 PM captain_morgan: the vac fitting are all 3 7/8 OD
09:02 PM unterhaus: I wish I could reliably hook up my tablesaw to my dc system without using a hacksaw
09:03 PM unterhaus: I have no idea what powermatic expected me to hook up to
09:03 PM captain_morgan: heat and dimple the PVC propably the fastest way forward
09:04 PM unterhaus: heh, duolingo wants me to translate: Je travaille avec un nouvel ordinateur et je ne m'y habitue pas.
09:05 PM unterhaus: I'm working with a new computer and I'm not used to it
09:05 PM roycroft: dust collection on a tablesaw is challenging
09:05 PM captain_morgan: hmmm, 3 7/8 or 100mm
09:06 PM unterhaus: the connections just don't match up, either bigger or smaller
09:07 PM unterhaus: I know people that have just cut the old connector out and bolted one on that works
09:07 PM unterhaus: I need to spend a day on it but I don't want to
09:19 PM unterhaus: a race horse in kentucky got rid of its rider, escaped the track and was running down the interstate
09:39 PM roycroft: hopefully not the wrong way
09:40 PM roycroft: that would be a hefty fine
09:40 PM XXCoder: yeet the rider
09:45 PM unterhaus: I want to see video
09:46 PM unterhaus: there's only video of it running down the highway
09:46 PM roycroft: not getting the ticket for reckless galloping?
09:46 PM unterhaus: they think the horse is okay
09:47 PM unterhaus: lost a shoe
09:47 PM unterhaus: I think beating up the rider would be more serious charges
09:48 PM roycroft: something must have spooked the horse
10:05 PM unterhaus: I can't believe none of the people at the track were recording it
10:08 PM unterhaus: Nobody tell Cap'n that covid causes ED
10:08 PM unterhaus: bad enough that coffee tastes like water
10:10 PM hazzy[m]: That was probably the slowest mustang on the highway
10:10 PM hazzy[m]: Exactly one horse power
10:15 PM Eric_ is now known as unterhausen
10:21 PM unterhausen: I heard netflix was letting people d/l movies to watch during the hurricane
10:23 PM unterhausen: apparently you can always do that, who knew?
10:34 PM roycroft: because there will be no power outages, just internet outages?
10:34 PM * CloudEvil looks at his UPS.
10:35 PM unterhausen: yeah, seems pointless
10:35 PM unterhausen: but it gives you something to do waiting for the power to go out
10:36 PM roycroft: pull out the kerosene lamp and the parcheesi board
10:37 PM captain_morgan: y'all going to be amazed when you discover laptops
10:37 PM captain_morgan: 'battery powered compooters'
10:38 PM roycroft: maybe some of the geeks caught in the hurricane will discover "thingie"
10:49 PM unterhausen: how long does the laptop battery last though?
10:49 PM unterhausen: maybe an ipad with an external battery
10:50 PM unterhausen: laptop might get you through 2 movies, maybe?
10:55 PM captain_morgan: I dunno, twitter probably has the answer though
10:58 PM captain_morgan: hrmph, what the what, I touch off Z as usual and my work is like 3x higher than my Z travel
11:00 PM captain_morgan: me: 18mm deep. FreeCAD: ok, 287mm deep
11:33 PM unterhausen: I suppose I can get rid of my book about composite materials from 1982
11:34 PM TurBoss: i have a book that say that "solder aluminun is not actually posible"
11:35 PM TurBoss: aka "el casillas"
11:41 PM unterhausen: I'm sure I have some engineering books that have been overcome by events
11:42 PM unterhausen: crc standard math tables
11:43 PM roycroft: aluminium is not impossible to solder, but it is very difficult to solder
11:45 PM roycroft: i've been watching uri tuchman again lately
11:45 PM roycroft: i used to watch his videos a lot, but fell out of the habit of doing so
11:46 PM roycroft: they are interesting, but he is both zen and nervous at the same time, which can be somewhat disconcerting
11:51 PM roycroft: oh, btw, the channel were discussing a restoration of an old fractal vise a while back
11:51 PM roycroft: they are still being made today
11:51 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tvnizh0XPOA&t=2s
11:51 PM XXCoder: not by same company
11:51 PM unterhausen: I want one of those fractal vises, but nowhere to put it
11:51 PM XXCoder: that person is trying to r-patent it and something
11:52 PM roycroft: the original is over 100 years old
11:52 PM roycroft: there are no patent issues with it
11:53 PM XXCoder: yeah
11:53 PM XXCoder: thats why i said re-patent
11:53 PM roycroft: but the guy who is developing it now claims to have some new patentable improvements
11:59 PM unterhausen: I'm sure it's possible to change it somehow
