12:31 AM roycroft: finally i can print a custom envelope size without jamming the printer
12:39 AM roycroft: every aspect of this job has been a hassle
02:28 AM Deejay: moin
05:35 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:35 AM XXCoder: o/
08:38 AM unterhaus: JT-Cave you don't have din rail mounts for 7i96, right?
09:07 AM JT-Cave: I have the material and components the only thing I'm lacking is time
09:25 AM unterhaus: You make them?
09:29 AM unterhaus: I wish I could drill a hole in approximately the right place
10:07 AM unterhaus: duolingo is trying to teach me how to talk about junk in French. Right up my alley
11:16 AM unterhaus: where is a good place to by a RasPi, and is 4gb enough?
12:21 PM Tom_L: 4g is enough
12:22 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XTQL6YZ/
12:22 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/Metal-Raspberry-Heatsink-Thermal-Adhesive/dp/B07VMD25SK
12:22 PM Tom_L: i got one and got that heatsink for it
12:23 PM Tom_L: unterhaus, ^^
12:23 PM Rhine_Labs: Siglent has to be worst warranty experience on a SDM3065X 6.5 digit DMM was way out of cal they agreed to send new replacement they sent an open box unit thats a year old on the date
12:31 PM unterhaus: Tom_L, I assume it doesn't fit in the case with that heatsink?
12:33 PM Tom_L: no it's in place of
12:33 PM Tom_L: but you can just use that case in the first link if you want
12:34 PM Tom_L: i wanted something fanless
12:34 PM Tom_L: they tend to die
12:35 PM Tom_L: it wouldn't work if you're going to use a mesa card on top of it
12:36 PM unterhaus: I have a 7i96, so that would be mounted elsewhere
12:36 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Rpi4/Rpi4_top.jpg
12:36 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Rpi4/Rpi4_bottom.jpg
12:36 PM Tom_L: yeah i use a 7i80 on mine to test with (ethernet)
12:36 PM unterhaus: what wifi dongle is that?
12:36 PM Tom_L: just the other day i installed the latest lcnc
12:37 PM Tom_L: logitech
12:37 PM unterhaus: keyboard then?
12:37 PM Tom_L: mouse
12:37 PM unterhaus: are you using wifi?
12:37 PM Tom_L: i plug the kbd in above it
12:37 PM Tom_L: yes
12:37 PM Tom_L: and a hard wire to the mesa card
12:39 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0OLIth_cOI
12:40 PM Roguish_shop: in the shop with a little Robin Trower on
12:49 PM Roguish_shop: got the new mill running in circles breaking in....
12:51 PM Rhine_Labs: Wow a pie runnning cnc humm
12:51 PM roycroft: my mill is sitting idle, as it has become unwilling to spin
12:51 PM roycroft: i'm going to pull the motor at lunch time today to test it
12:51 PM Tom_L: it is lunchtime!
12:51 PM roycroft: not quite yet
12:51 PM roycroft: rpis have been doing cnc controlling for ages
12:52 PM Tom_L: not that long for lcnc
12:52 PM roycroft: they're relatively new to linuxcnc, but the 3d printing world and the cnc router world have been using them for a long time
12:59 PM unterhaus: I have one applicaton where one of those little touchscreens would be pretty nice
12:59 PM unterhaus: overkill maybe
01:17 PM JT-Shop: unterhaus, yes I make standoffs for all the mesa cards
01:20 PM snakedLX is now known as snaked
01:39 PM roycroft: i think i ordered some din rail mounts from you, jt-shop
02:11 PM perry_j1987: hows it going
02:13 PM perry_j1987: got my first injury on the lathe lastnight
02:14 PM Tom_L: you must still have a few fingers
02:14 PM perry_j1987: hot chip came right at my face in slow motion
02:15 PM perry_j1987: had that perfect curl on it and it attatched itself right on my bottom lip
02:15 PM Tom_L: your goggles protected you though right?
02:15 PM perry_j1987: seered in instantly
02:15 PM perry_j1987: ya eyes fine didnt think about lips haha
02:15 PM Roguish_shop: ouch
02:16 PM perry_j1987: those C's and 6's can be bad lol
02:16 PM perry_j1987: landed RIGHT on my lip like one of those stupid lip rings lol
02:18 PM perry_j1987: one more hole to go and then i can enlarge them with one more size drill bit to get the boring bar in there
02:20 PM Roguish_shop: well, you're alive to tell story...... that's good
02:20 PM perry_j1987: aye
02:20 PM perry_j1987: i am thinking of selling this 9x20 lathe
02:23 PM roycroft: well my mill's motor seems fine
02:23 PM roycroft: it spins, abeit very slowly, when connected to a 9v battery with no load
02:24 PM roycroft: so i guess i'm back to troubleshooting the controller
02:24 PM roycroft: this is good though - a new motor is $300+, and i can get the controller repaired for $50 if i can't figure out how to fix it myself
02:30 PM perry_j1987: nice
02:30 PM perry_j1987: what kind of mill
02:39 PM jepler_: yay hal_input was only slightly busted and a pull request makes it work again. https://emergent.unpythonic.net/01629313423
03:00 PM roycroft: a sieg x3, perry_j1987
03:00 PM perry_j1987: how do you like it
03:00 PM roycroft: commonly referred to as a "mini mill"
03:00 PM roycroft: it's small, it fits in my shop, and i've been making parts with it for over a decade
03:01 PM roycroft: i've learned to live with its limitations, and it's been very useful
03:01 PM roycroft: until it died
03:03 PM perry_j1987: brushless sewing machine motors for 90ish bucks you can put on it
03:06 PM roycroft: i just need to get the controller fixed, if that is what the problem turns out to be
03:06 PM roycroft: i'm starting to suspect the forward/reverse switch may be the issue
03:10 PM * roycroft will be able to do more diagnostics after work
03:24 PM perry_j1987: this boring head is pretty fun
03:27 PM roycroft: that's the thing with my mill
03:27 PM roycroft: if i had to replace the motor i'd need to machine a new mounting plate for it
03:27 PM roycroft: which would require my using a boring head
03:28 PM roycroft: i don't have the 4-jaw chuck fitted to my lathe yet, so i'd need the mill to machine the plate that i need to fix the mill
03:28 PM roycroft: so it's a good thing the motor is ok
03:28 PM perry_j1987: rig up some gillagans island peddle power to it :)
03:28 PM perry_j1987: burn some calories while machining
03:28 PM roycroft: if push came to shove i'd get something sorted
03:28 PM MrHindsight[m]: huh they actually sent me a certificate of it's composition and test results https://www.mcmaster.com/89955K579/
03:28 PM roycroft: i'm in the middle of making a part
03:29 PM roycroft: the machine is still set up for it, and i'd rather not have to redo the setup, and would like to finish the part as well
03:29 PM roycroft: i have a 48vdc power supply
03:30 PM roycroft: that would only run my motor at about half speed, and i would not be able to vary the speed, but i could probably get this job done with a setup like that
03:30 PM roycroft: i'm just milling some v grooves in a piece of flat stock, and i'm almost done
03:30 PM roycroft: i'm either on the last one or the next to the last one
03:31 PM Rhine_Labs: Nap time.,
03:50 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, i've heard those sewing machine controls blow up
03:50 PM perry_j1987: oh ya?
03:50 PM perry_j1987: thats good to know
03:53 PM Tom_L: i looked into them to replace my sherline motor setup
03:54 PM perry_j1987: underspec fets or something?
03:54 PM Tom_L: no idea
03:58 PM roycroft: if i end up replacing things i'll probably just get a 3 phase motor and a vfd that linuxcnc can control
03:59 PM Tom_L: modbus is not always a sure thing on those unless you write one for it
03:59 PM roycroft: but since my motor seems fine, i'll likely not have to do that for a while
03:59 PM Tom_L: i'd look for pwm or analog
04:00 PM roycroft: i have several huanyang vfds, and they have analog interfaces
04:00 PM roycroft: i know that folks use them with linuxcnc
04:00 PM Tom_L: yup
04:00 PM roycroft: my motor is 3/4hp
04:00 PM roycroft: i would not put anything larger than 1hp on the mill
04:00 PM Tom_L: i went with 0-10v analog
04:01 PM roycroft: but i have some devices that have 2hp motors, so i'd proably end up getting a 3hp vfd (since they need to be derated), as that's mostly what i have already
04:01 PM Tom_L: iirc mine is ~1.6hp
04:01 PM roycroft: having several of the same thing makes sparing less expensive, and if there are no spares, one can always be 'borrowed' in a pinch from another machine
04:03 PM Tom_L: the sherline was ~.6hp
04:06 PM roycroft: my belt grinder has a 3hp motor on it now, and i got a 5hp vfd for it
04:06 PM roycroft: but everything else uses 3hp vfds with 2hp motors
04:07 PM roycroft: and btw, i derate because i'm feeding the vfd single phase, not because the vfd is chinese
04:09 PM roycroft: my experience with huanyang vfds is that they'r very reliable
04:12 PM roycroft: the board repair guy just emailed me back and told me to check the interlock circuit, which goes through the forward/reverse switch that i am suspecting
04:13 PM roycroft: i'll do that after work
04:13 PM roycroft: that switch is a $15 part if it's bad
04:13 PM roycroft: and i can bypass it for now if need be
04:32 PM MrHindsight[m]: So let me get this straight, if you software step faster than what your settings allow for in your config.ini you will generate a following error. Is this true?
04:46 PM JT-Shop: http://www.vdwalle.com/Norte/LinuxCNC%20Following%20Error.htm
04:46 PM JT-Shop: not sure how one could step faster than the max velocity of an axis
04:48 PM * MrHindsight[m] < https://libera.ems.host/_matrix/media/r0/download/libera.chat/ac5b68c69df5a85e6a09028b6372d84f18c3c64e/message.txt >
04:49 PM MrHindsight[m]: by having the wrong settings, settings for max velocity above what is possible for the base period
04:50 PM MrHindsight[m]: people coming from GRBL trying to use LCNC on the Opi or using LCNC with Remora on a microcontroller
04:50 PM MrHindsight[m]: seems to be a lack of following the docs
04:52 PM MrHindsight[m]: LCNC devs expecting users to perform some math calculations
04:52 PM MrHindsight[m]: ignorant users expecting LCNC devs to just make it work for them
05:01 PM * JT-Shop attempts to clean off his desk...
05:01 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, what do you use for clean up for tried & true
05:11 PM roycroft: i suppose mineral spirits would work
05:11 PM roycroft: i generally put down some plastic before i apply it
05:11 PM roycroft: and i generally apply it on my workbench, which is finished with tried and true
05:11 PM roycroft: so if any spills, i just rub it in
05:14 PM JT-Shop: I tried mineral spirits but it did nothing it seemed, I was using a small dipper to get it out and tried cleaning it
05:14 PM JT-Shop: I ended up just wiping it clean with a paper towel
05:15 PM roycroft: i'm trying to remember if i've ever had to try to clean it off something
05:15 PM roycroft: i'm not sure i have
05:16 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/saw-stop/saw-cabinet-26.jpg
05:16 PM JT-Shop: first coat on the bottom
05:16 PM roycroft: but my usual progression for non-polar substances is mineral spirits, then denatured alcohol, then acetone, then lacquer thinner
05:17 PM JT-Shop: do you just dip the cloth in the can?
05:17 PM roycroft: i usually pour it in a 1/2 pint mason jar, and set the jar in my glue pot to heat up for a while, so i can apply it when it's hot
05:18 PM roycroft: but i dip the cloth in the jar when i do that
05:28 PM roycroft: ok, time to test the interlock circuit and see if that's really the problem
05:29 PM roycroft: if not, i'm about ready to send the board in for repair
05:31 PM JT-Shop: that's good if you can get it repaired
05:32 PM Tom_L: evening
05:41 PM JT-Shop: finally got started finishing the cabinet
05:50 PM Tom_L: saw that
05:53 PM JT-Shop: honda dealer seems to have a ridgeline rtl-e in transit... wrong color but I can check it out when it arrives
06:01 PM roycroft: the interlock circuit doesn't seem to be working correctly
06:02 PM roycroft: i emailed the guy again - hopefully he'll get back to me soon and advise me on what next i should do
06:02 PM roycroft: and i told him that if he needs a consult fee for the remote troubleshooting to send me an invoice via paypal
06:02 PM roycroft: i hope that doesn't turn out to be a mistake :)
06:03 PM roycroft: although i never told him i would pay it - just to send it
06:03 PM roycroft: i just don't feel comfortable emailing strangers with a bunch of questions and taking up their time
06:08 PM JT-Shop: time to wander inside now
06:12 PM JT-Shop: https://www.popularwoodworking.com/finishing/ebonizing_wood/
06:12 PM JT-Shop: interesting
06:13 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:20 PM roycroft: i made up a batch of steel wool and vinegar a few weeks ago
06:20 PM roycroft: it took a couple weeks to dissolve most of the steel wool, but i can turn walnut jet black in seconds now
06:21 PM roycroft: it was my backup plan for the faux ebony plugs in case the wenge did not dye to my liking
06:22 PM roycroft: i've not tried it with tannic acid yet, as walnut has plenty of it naturally
06:23 PM roycroft: and the nice thing is, walnut sapwood turns a black as heartwood, so i can use my sapwood scraps that are useless for anything else to ebonize
06:23 PM JT-Cave: interesting
06:24 PM roycroft: now you don't have to use your walnut sapwood as firewood :)
06:25 PM JT-Cave: lol I save every tiny bit of walnut
06:25 PM JT-Cave: I don't think I have any sapwood from that slab my buddy gave me
06:26 PM JT-Cave: I do have a rather large walnut tree that might need to be cut down...
06:29 PM JT-Cave: I got all the elm split except 2 large rounds that needed the kubota to lift so maybe tomorrow
06:30 PM roycroft: i've never worked with elm
06:31 PM JT-Cave: summer rings are huge so it's firewood
06:31 PM roycroft: flat sawn it's not too attractive, but quarter sawn might be nice
06:32 PM JT-Cave: wasn't much to think about sawing it up, lots of branches
06:32 PM JT-Cave: split pretty easy for the most part
06:33 PM JT-Cave: I need to get the firewood bins full soon
06:38 PM roycroft: i don't know how well it burns, either
06:38 PM roycroft: i've never worked with it either way :)
06:39 PM JT-Cave: all wood burns some better than others, I split it into smaller pieces so it can dry better
06:42 PM JT-Cave: sounds like salad time upstairs
06:58 PM unterhaus: Penn state sells Elm, they kept their elm trees alive until they started killing students
06:58 PM unterhaus: well, they still have some, but if a forester says it's dangerous, it goes
06:58 PM unterhaus: They could have replaced them right away and saved a lot of heartache, but they are sentimental
07:03 PM roycroft: heartache is important
07:03 PM roycroft: without it there would be no country-western songs
07:40 PM unterhaus: I'm trying to see they problem with not having any country western songs
07:40 PM unterhaus: nothing new to listen to on road trips, i guess
07:44 PM XXCoder: long drives is super boring for me
07:45 PM XXCoder: every song is "new" to me, since it cant be listened to ever lol
07:45 PM XXCoder: result is i just drive
07:46 PM unterhaus: I really got burned out on driving a few years back.
07:47 PM roycroft: i would find long drives somewhat tedious if i could not listen to music
07:47 PM roycroft: i do like road trips though
07:48 PM roycroft: which is why i was especially looking forward to my recent vacation - it marked only the second time in a year and a half that i'd left the county
07:48 PM XXCoder: thats way more times than I did
07:48 PM XXCoder: which is, sadly, zerpo
07:54 PM unterhaus: I was driving from central PA to central Virginia every weekend for over 2 years to work on a house
07:55 PM unterhaus: it got old
07:55 PM XXCoder: how many hours drive?
07:57 PM unterhaus: 6, I think. So friday night after work then drive back Sunday night
07:58 PM XXCoder: ouch
07:58 PM unterhaus: I need to go there to see my brother, not looking forward to it
07:59 PM unterhaus: my sister should have moved my brother closer to me. But he said no so she didn't ask me
08:00 PM unterhaus: he could be living in a sewer-filled hole and not want to move, so asking him is just pointless
08:00 PM unterhaus: He would have been happy with the new place after a couple of days
08:02 PM XXCoder: austistic or something like that?
08:33 PM unterhaus: Yes, he's autistic. Hates change but adapts very quickly. I can't convince my family about that
08:33 PM roycroft: a lot of people just hate change anyway
08:34 PM unterhaus: sure, but one of the attributes of autism is that they line routine
08:34 PM unterhaus: like routine
08:34 PM roycroft: i don't understand the whole "i am done growing as a person and just want to coast for the rest of my life" mentality
08:34 PM roycroft: i'm in my 60s and i embrace and get excited by change
08:35 PM roycroft: most of my friends are stuck in time
08:35 PM roycroft: some are stuck in their high school mentality
08:35 PM roycroft: which is like 45 years ago
08:35 PM unterhaus: Most of us will balance the benefits of change against the familiarity of routine and make a decision
08:35 PM unterhaus: ask an autistic person and they don't care, they'll choose routine
08:36 PM roycroft: i grew up in the '60s and '70s, when the whole earth movement was a strong force
08:36 PM roycroft: the likes of stewart brand, and paul hawken were folks i looked up to at the time
08:36 PM unterhaus: The place my sister found to move him to was much nicer, closer to me, and in a nice town
08:37 PM roycroft: stewart coined the term "appropriate technology" back then
08:37 PM unterhaus: no brainer to move him, no matter what he said
08:37 PM roycroft: the meaning of which should be self-evident
08:37 PM roycroft: that's been a mantra of mine ever since
08:37 PM roycroft: i love innovation
08:37 PM roycroft: but i don't throw out old ways that work fine for new ways that don't necessarily work as well
08:38 PM roycroft: it's not 'we must change' or 'we must stay the same' to me
08:38 PM roycroft: it's the journey and discovery and new thinking that melds the good things of old with the good things that are new that keeps me going
08:39 PM roycroft: to me it seems like life is just being wasted if one stops being curious
08:46 PM roycroft: i'm not claiming to have any unique insight or perspective, of course
08:47 PM roycroft: i expect that most people on this channel think similarly - otherwise why would they want to move from manual machining to cnc?
08:47 PM roycroft: it does surprise me to encounter folks who really don't want to move forward and improve themselves, though
08:47 PM roycroft: even though in run into such people frequently
08:56 PM perry_j1987: pfftt amazon sent the wrong er16 holders
08:56 PM perry_j1987: pushes my fun back to friday for the right ones to arrive
09:15 PM * flyback points to perry_j1987 and laughs
09:15 PM perry_j1987: lol
09:31 PM roycroft: any time you depend on anything arriving via courier, it's wise to have another path to fun
09:33 PM ktc_hk: When will 2.8.2 supported under Debian 11?
09:34 PM Tom_L: build a kernel for it
09:35 PM ktc_hk: I had Debian 11 and 2.9 pre 0
09:37 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/18-computer/42057-linux-debian-11-bullseye-rtos-5-10-0-5-rt-amd64-download?start=0
09:37 PM Tom_L: saw that
09:38 PM Tom_L: 'bullseye'
09:38 PM ktc_hk: yes did install that
09:41 PM ktc_hk: not in the Debian 11 repository
09:42 PM Tom_L: probably needs a preempt-rt kernel
09:43 PM Tom_L: you like to stay on the bleeding edge?
09:43 PM ktc_hk: Debian 11 SMP PREEMPT_RT Debian 5.10.46-4
09:44 PM * roycroft will likely wait until 11.1 or 11.2 before putting any production services on bullseye, and he trusts debian major releases more than most other os major releases
09:44 PM Tom_L: it likely won't be mainstream for a bit
09:44 PM Tom_L: ie build yer own
09:45 PM ktc_hk: Oh thans
09:45 PM roycroft: i guarantee that there are people on this channel running linuxcnc on wheezy still, with no intention of upgrading
09:45 PM Tom_L: i haven't heard anything about it yet
09:45 PM Tom_L: but i don't always listen
09:45 PM roycroft: bullseye has been out for less than a week
09:45 PM ktc_hk: Video is better under bullseye
09:48 PM ktc_hk: bye
09:50 PM roycroft: that was odd
09:51 PM Tom_L: stranger have happened here
09:53 PM roycroft: yes
10:09 PM perry_j1987: whats wrong with wheezy lol
10:13 PM Tom_L: nothing, i use it but it it EOL
10:14 PM Tom_L: it works perfectly fine
10:15 PM Tom_L: running 2.8.2 on it iirc
10:30 PM roycroft: i was just using it as a comparison to jumping on the bleeding edge
10:31 PM Tom_L: i missed your comment until you just mentioned it :) ... tired eyes
10:31 PM Tom_L: after all, it was 'bleeding edge' at one point
11:26 PM perry_j1987: watching that Stowaway space movie
