12:59 AM Deejay: moin
01:44 AM randy: omrning
06:27 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:28 AM XXCoder: heys
06:31 AM Tom_L: morning
06:37 AM JT-Cave: sunrise here and the start of another chicken day
07:07 AM miss0r2: I feel like the manual for this 4th&5th axis is not enough for my reptile brain to make it in life
07:09 AM miss0r2: Something I completely fail to understand is: It will move to zero position on the B axis in the last direction you used. Only issue is; one way will cause overtravel, while the other way will sortof zero it out with the limit switch.... :S
07:09 AM miss0r2: I think thats enough tinkering with that for one day
07:35 AM JT-Cave: oddly enough that reminded me of arlo guthrie singing I'm changing my name to chrysler
09:21 AM roycroft: i've never seen arlo perform that, but i have seen tom paxton perform it
11:07 AM roycroft: i'm upgrading some more low-traffic machines to debian 11 today
11:07 AM roycroft: the upgrades are still going slowly, but not nearly as slowly as yesterday
11:08 AM roycroft: i'll probably hold off on any public-facing machines for a while, though
12:33 PM Rhine_Labs: nap time
01:40 PM roycroft: i think i'm going to start getting ready to work on the milling machine on my lunch break today
01:40 PM roycroft: i have a bit of tidying up to do in the shop, then i can start making room to work on it
01:57 PM miss0r2: do any of you guys have any experience resetting the refrence points on a kitagawa Mac mini iH2?
02:00 PM JT-Shop: I don't even know what you said :)
02:58 PM MrHindsight[m]: https://gearjunkie.com/technology/paper-saw-blade-cut-wood
03:04 PM captain_morgan: good demonstration of ablation
03:05 PM captain_morgan: or, how ablation is leveraged to cut materials harder than the cutting material
03:07 PM roycroft: i've seen other videos of paper discs cutting wood like that
03:08 PM roycroft: in none of them are the operator's fingers so dangerously close to the disc
03:27 PM MrHindsight[m]: like water over rocks
03:28 PM MrHindsight[m]: and why you should close the faucet all the way vs leave it dripping
05:01 PM perry_j1987: back from vacation
05:01 PM perry_j1987: hows everybody
05:02 PM * roycroft is marvelous, simply marvelous
05:05 PM perry_j1987: nice
05:06 PM perry_j1987: today is the day... to pull out this new boring head and give it a try
05:07 PM XXCoder: hey and welcome back heh
05:08 PM perry_j1987: looks like the tools didnt rust while i was gone
05:15 PM Tom_L: MrHindsight[m], whole new meaning to a paper cut
05:17 PM MrHindsight[m]: what is the summer pestilence going around this year besides Covid?
05:18 PM XXCoder: flu and such is way elkss than normal now
05:21 PM MrHindsight[m]: this is either the worst cold I've ever had or not a cold
05:34 PM roycroft: the mother of all paper cuts, that would be
05:35 PM * roycroft suspects that the flu will be back in force, since people are not distancing and masking like last year
05:35 PM Tom_L: was it you that was looking for a thin cutting blade?
05:35 PM XXCoder: ouch https://twitter.com/BillyBroccy2/status/1427298280053030917
05:36 PM roycroft: i have found what i need
05:36 PM roycroft: well, sort of
05:36 PM roycroft: i'm not happy with the thin kerf blade that i have
05:36 PM roycroft: the kerf is nice and the grind is nice, but the plate is wafa-thin, and even with stabilizers, i get some burning
05:37 PM roycroft: when that paper blade was cutting wood it was burning it pretty badly, btw
05:37 PM Tom_L: i saw that
05:38 PM Tom_L: that's likely how it was making it's way thru the material
05:38 PM roycroft: anyway, i have found another blade whose kerf is too wide, but can be ground back a bit, and has a thicker plate than the one i have, but not thicker thanthe kerf needs to be
05:38 PM roycroft: so i may get one of those and have it modified
05:39 PM roycroft: it's only 8" in diameter, too, which means it's less expensive, and would have less runout than a 10" blade, all other factors being equal
05:42 PM roycroft: so my milling machine is almost ready to move - i may get that done this afternoon yet
05:42 PM roycroft: hopefully i'll be able to diagnose the problem with it quickly after i can access the electronics, and fix it quickly and inexpensively
05:43 PM roycroft: i'm hoping for something like an internal fuse that's blown
05:59 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/saw-stop/saw-cabinet-25.jpg
05:59 PM JT-Shop: ready to finish
06:00 PM XXCoder: jt you saw my twitter link?
06:00 PM XXCoder: and damn thats nice drawers!
06:00 PM JT-Shop: I don't do twitter
06:00 PM roycroft: yeah, that looks really nice
06:00 PM JT-Shop: and no didn't see the link
06:00 PM JT-Shop: thanks
06:00 PM roycroft: did you see my finished lamp, jt-shop?
06:00 PM XXCoder: its funny picture :D
06:01 PM JT-Shop: yes
06:01 PM XXCoder: i dont do much twitter
06:01 PM JT-Shop: pretty interesting lamp
06:01 PM roycroft: the next one will be a lot better
06:01 PM roycroft: but that one was not too bad
06:01 PM JT-Shop: we always do better after some experience
06:01 PM XXCoder: i cant find your picture of lamp roy
06:02 PM roycroft: yes, this one turned out pretty much as i expected
06:02 PM roycroft: xxcoder: roycroft.us/Shoji-Lamp
06:02 PM XXCoder: JT-Shop: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/763323422746345472/877322983927054436/E87INodXsAEbIlJ.png?width=595&height=660
06:02 PM XXCoder: non-twitter link
06:02 PM XXCoder: oh yes
06:02 PM JT-Shop: I looked at the twitter link...
06:02 PM roycroft: on a scale of 0-100, where 10 is wal*mart quality and 100 is museum quality, i'd rate that lamp about a 60-65
06:03 PM XXCoder: remember that. didnt see final pucture, it looks so awesome
06:03 PM XXCoder: oh lol
06:03 PM roycroft: it needs to be at least an 80 before i would consider selling one
06:03 PM JT-Shop: are you making them to sell at the festival?
06:03 PM roycroft: no, at least that's not my current plan
06:04 PM JT-Shop: ah ok, just wondering
06:04 PM roycroft: if you're talking about the country fair, it takes years to get juried in
06:04 PM roycroft: and then i would have to find a booth to sell them at
06:04 PM JT-Shop: the fair you showed me photos of a couple of years ago with hippy booths
06:04 PM roycroft: ye
06:04 PM roycroft: s
06:04 PM * Tom_L wonders if he can figure out a way to snatch jt's cabinet
06:04 PM JT-Shop: give it your best shot...
06:04 PM roycroft: and that lamp is also a bit high-end for the country fair
06:04 PM * XXCoder already stole it
06:05 PM * JT-Shop loads up the 6 pounder
06:05 PM XXCoder: lol
06:05 PM JT-Shop: time for some rabbit food...
06:06 PM _unreal_: hum
06:06 PM XXCoder: been on keto diet for over a week
06:06 PM XXCoder: "yay"
06:13 PM JT-Cave: doing anything for you?
06:13 PM XXCoder: yeah im way less dizzy
06:13 PM XXCoder: though still problems
06:14 PM JT-Cave: you think the carbs make you dizzy?
06:14 PM XXCoder: seems so. theres symtom called autobrewery
06:15 PM JT-Cave: I think I've heard of that
06:15 PM XXCoder: its fairly rare
06:16 PM XXCoder: i couldnt stand still well and couldnt walk well for quite a while
06:16 PM JT-Cave: so no sugar or carbs?
06:16 PM XXCoder: then now its just fine, though i guess theres something else along with it as i have "noises" in middle of head and my vision still dont track anything
06:17 PM XXCoder: bathing got pretty lot less dangerous, thats good too
06:59 PM enleth: XXCoder: make absolutely sure your fluid intake is on the high side, keto diets put a significant strain on the kidneys - well within their capacity *if* they're healthy and get enough water to work with, but enough to cause damage otherwise
06:59 PM XXCoder: yeah always drank a lot of water
07:05 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:10 PM perry_j1987: hardware store closed... guess i gotta use the lathe to make this m12 thread heh
07:18 PM XXCoder: enleth: yeah i dont know if plan long term
07:40 PM * roycroft 's diet would be considered "mediterranean" by most
07:42 PM XXCoder: i used to be on seafood diet
07:42 PM XXCoder: i see food i eat ut
08:12 PM acer: you eat ut?
08:12 PM acer is now known as _unreal_
08:26 PM Eric_: just started a new medicine that has a $230 copay per month. They know people have this unreasonable desire to breathe
08:27 PM CloudEvil: Oxygen is for sheeple.
08:29 PM roycroft: if anything at all good comes from this pandemic, it will be that people got their vaccines for zero out of pocket cost, and with zero insurance company hassles, and they'll get used to that
08:29 PM roycroft: and we may finally achieve a sane health care system in this country
08:30 PM Tom_L: don't get your hopes up
08:30 PM roycroft: anyway, the good news for today is that i got my mill moved and have access to the logic board
08:30 PM Tom_L: if there's money to be made... it's the Merican way
08:31 PM roycroft: the bad news (not too bad, because i had no realistic expectation otherwise) is that there's no internal fuse or breaker that could be the cause of the problem
08:31 PM Tom_L: no fuses that weren't supposed to be fuses?
08:32 PM XXCoder: roy hope so but honestly dunno
08:32 PM XXCoder: whats you looking into fixing anyway
08:33 PM roycroft: not that i can tell so far, tom_l
08:34 PM roycroft: xxcoder: a few weeks ago i was in the middle of a machining job and i turned the mill off to deal with ups
08:34 PM roycroft: when i turned it back on the motor did not turn any more
08:34 PM roycroft: the fault light does not come on, but the power led for the motor also does not come on, which it normally does when the motor is operating
08:34 PM XXCoder: weird. what does turning off cause that could break something
08:35 PM roycroft: the controller is inside the machine in the back, and i could not access it because the mill was installed up against a wall
08:35 PM XXCoder: all i can think of is fried driver, inside motor break of wire
08:35 PM roycroft: there are some leds on the controller, and they come on when i power it up
08:35 PM roycroft: there's a guy in maine who repairs these controllers, but i can't find his website offhand
08:35 PM roycroft: he has a troubleshooting guide
08:36 PM roycroft: right after this happened my garage door opener died
08:36 PM roycroft: and i could not move the mill out to work on it unless i moved some machines out onto my driveway
08:36 PM roycroft: i finally got a new garage door opener and installed it right before my vacation
08:37 PM Eric_: roycroft, what brand machine?
08:37 PM roycroft: and today was the first day that i could move things around and pll the machine otu
08:37 PM roycroft: it's from grizzly
08:37 PM roycroft: it's a sieg x3
08:37 PM roycroft: g0463
08:37 PM roycroft: that's the grizzly part number
08:38 PM Eric_: it's a conversion?
08:38 PM roycroft: no
08:38 PM roycroft: not yet
08:38 PM roycroft: it's stock right now
08:38 PM roycroft: i need to determine what is wrong with it - the motor or the controller board
08:38 PM roycroft: my immediate need is to complete the job i'm working on
08:39 PM roycroft: if possible
08:39 PM Eric_: so it's just the spindle motor that's dead
08:39 PM roycroft: i don't know that the motor is dead
08:39 PM roycroft: i know that the motor is not spinning when i attempt to send it power
08:40 PM roycroft: i'm trying to find the troubleshooting guide so i can easily debug the problem
08:40 PM roycroft: if the controller is bad and i can get it repaired for <$100 i'll do that
08:40 PM Eric_: I meant that's all there was to die, spindle drive is more likely obviously
08:41 PM roycroft: if the motor is dead, then i'll probably replace both the motor and controller with something more suited to operating under linuxcnc
08:41 PM Eric_: that drive probably can be controlled with one of the isolator electronic pots though
08:41 PM XXCoder: well hope its not too expensive repair
08:41 PM Eric_: since it's a dc motor, you could test separately
08:42 PM roycroft: it's worth investing a little money fixing what i have now, because to replace the motor and controller would almost certainly require machining some mounting hardware
08:42 PM roycroft: if i can find the guy in maine's website, i know he repairs the boards for a flat fee of like $80
08:42 PM Eric_: that's a no brainer
08:42 PM roycroft: it's a 110vdc motor
08:42 PM roycroft: i don't have a 110vdc power supply
08:43 PM roycroft: https://littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=3194
08:43 PM roycroft: that's the controller board
08:43 PM roycroft: and i'm not spending $300 on a new one
08:44 PM roycroft: AAY
08:44 PM roycroft: AAH, rather
08:44 PM roycroft: but that lms page has a link to the repair guy's site
08:45 PM roycroft: and he actually charges $50, not $80
08:45 PM Tom_L: worth ~30 bucks
08:45 PM Eric_: you don't need 110vdc
08:45 PM roycroft: but he also has a troubleshooting page on his site, which is what i was looking for
08:45 PM XXCoder: 50 is way better than 300
08:45 PM roycroft: and now i've found it
08:45 PM Eric_: that's nice lmc had a link
08:45 PM XXCoder: found the break?
08:46 PM Eric_: I really like them even though I might never buy anything from them
08:46 PM roycroft: and yeah
08:46 PM roycroft: i have a 48vdc power supply that i intend to use for my cnc conversion
08:46 PM roycroft: i can test with that
08:46 PM roycroft: the motor should run, but at about half speed
08:47 PM roycroft: and if that works, i could actually just use that power supply to run it to finish the job i'm working on, while i get the controller repaired
08:47 PM roycroft: if it doesn't, then i need a new motor
08:47 PM roycroft: and then it's time for a 3 phase motor and a vfd that linuxcnc can control
08:48 PM Eric_: according to a post on cnczone, shorting anything to ground is a bad idea
08:49 PM Eric_: took out the halls in the motor
08:49 PM roycroft: i also just replaced a garage door opener
08:49 PM roycroft: the old opener has a 1/2hp motor that i think is dc
08:50 PM roycroft: it may be possible that if my motor has died i could swap that one in temporarily
08:50 PM roycroft: anyway, i have a troubleshooting guide now, so i'm going to go check a few things
08:50 PM roycroft: this time i printed it out, in case i forget where i got it again
08:51 PM Eric_: the halls must be on the brushless version
08:53 PM Eric_ is now known as unterhausen
09:00 PM roycroft: my motor has brushes
09:01 PM roycroft: and i can't find either of my flukes, but i do have an automotive diagnostic meter - it is dc only on voltage measurements
09:01 PM XXCoder: brushes is fine?
09:01 PM roycroft: i measure no voltage going to the motor
09:01 PM roycroft: so i think it's the controller, not the motor, that is bad
09:01 PM XXCoder: oh
09:01 PM roycroft: but i really need to find a fluke so i can trace signals
09:02 PM roycroft: or i need to pull my o-scope out and use that to trace signals, which is doable but awkward
09:04 PM Tom_L: you can always test the motor on your car battery
09:04 PM unterhausen: did you say the fuse was good? Everybody mentions a fuse
09:04 PM XXCoder: seems his has no fuse
09:04 PM unterhausen: the Maine guy mentions testing the motor with a 9v battery
09:04 PM unterhausen: no fuse any more
09:04 PM Tom_L: it may be fused together
09:05 PM unterhausen: fuse got vaporized
09:05 PM unterhausen: the advantage of a 9v battery is that the current is limited
09:06 PM unterhausen: car battery has no effective limit in this case. Especially if you have a prius
09:06 PM XXCoder: why expecially that model?
09:07 PM unterhausen: because the battery is 200v and some incredible amperage
09:07 PM XXCoder: ok
09:07 PM unterhausen: same could be said for a tesla, even moreso
09:07 PM unterhausen: thanks for ruining my joke though :)
09:07 PM XXCoder: lol ok
09:08 PM unterhausen: okay, it wasn't a good joke, sorry
09:08 PM XXCoder: its fine
09:14 PM flyback: https://lygte-info.dk/ <--- BOOKMARK NOW
09:21 PM XXCoder: flyback: for?
09:21 PM flyback: dmm info
09:21 PM flyback: battery info
09:21 PM flyback: usb charging protocols
09:21 PM XXCoder: cool
09:21 PM flyback: power supply info
09:22 PM flyback: I stumbled on it looking for a disassembly of my usb power meter
09:30 PM XXCoder: cool :) it looked likeyou was spamming for a min lol
09:31 PM XXCoder: site wasnt usual spamsite though so i wondered why
09:31 PM Tom_L: yeah you really gotta watch flyback !
09:33 PM flyback: no this is a good site
09:33 PM flyback: :)
09:33 PM flyback: they did a teardown of my usb power meter like I said
09:35 PM Tom_L: i _was_ kidding
09:36 PM roycroft: well that's frustrating
09:36 PM roycroft: the motor brushes look fine
09:36 PM roycroft: all the voltage checks in the troubleshooting guide are good
09:36 PM roycroft: but the motor does not spin
09:36 PM Tom_L: broken wire?
09:36 PM Tom_L: test the motor with a battery?
09:36 PM roycroft: i don't have time today to disconnect the belt and run the motor on a battery
09:37 PM roycroft: but that's the next step
09:37 PM Tom_L: brush hung
09:37 PM roycroft: and i don't see how any wires could be broken, but yes, that's another test i have to do
09:37 PM roycroft: i really want to find something wrong
09:37 PM roycroft: because i can't fix it until i do
09:37 PM flyback: did you check the resistance on the poles
09:37 PM roycroft: oh well, it was a good start today
09:37 PM roycroft: not yet
09:38 PM flyback: do it
09:38 PM flyback: or BMCC
09:38 PM roycroft: i've been focused on the controller board for now
09:38 PM roycroft: the motor is my next focus, tomorrow
09:38 PM flyback: quick test would be to stick one probe on the axel
09:38 PM flyback: and brush the other probe over all the segments
09:38 PM roycroft: i'm going to pull the motor tomorrow and put it on the bench for testing
09:39 PM roycroft: if it's shot then it's time for a 3 phase motor and a vfd, and to ditch the current setup completely
09:39 PM roycroft: but i won't speculate on that - i'll test
09:56 PM perry_j1987: there we go back at the shop and got first threads made for this drawbar
10:18 PM roycroft: this evening i have to fix a broken printer driver
10:18 PM roycroft: which is about the last thing in the universe that i want to do
10:18 PM perry_j1987: 2021 still printer issues heh
10:19 PM roycroft: especially since it will entail hand editing xml files
10:19 PM perry_j1987: i have a decision to make on how i want to do the tightening end of this drawbar now
10:19 PM roycroft: my printer driver lets me define custom paper sizes
10:19 PM roycroft: except it won't let me define custom envelope sizes
10:19 PM roycroft: and i need to print ~5000 #12 envelopes
10:20 PM perry_j1987: typewriter :)
10:20 PM perry_j1987: label makers
10:20 PM roycroft: what we've done in the past is print sheets of address labels and apply them to the envelopes
10:20 PM roycroft: that's just messy and generally bad
10:20 PM perry_j1987: aye
10:21 PM roycroft: i'd rather do a mail merge and print the addresses directly on the envelopes
10:21 PM perry_j1987: either way someone's going to mess up envelopes
10:21 PM perry_j1987: and cause reprints
10:22 PM roycroft: as well, if we use the labels, we have to send all the envelopes to a print shop to print the return address, and then print the labels
10:22 PM roycroft: it essentially doubles the cost of printing
10:22 PM roycroft: if i do a mail merge i can print both the recipient and return addresses in a single go
10:24 PM roycroft: this work is for a non-profit, so saving money is especially important
10:25 PM perry_j1987: aye
10:25 PM roycroft: even more especially since we've had zero revenue for the past two years, due to the pandemic
10:25 PM perry_j1987: def do on envelopes
10:25 PM roycroft: thank goodness for rainy day funds
10:26 PM roycroft: anyway, i have to deal with that tonight, which is why i needed to stop work on the mill
10:26 PM roycroft: i'm not happy about the problem - konica told me that the printer can deal with custom envelope sizes, but that the print driver is broken
10:27 PM perry_j1987: windows or linux
10:27 PM roycroft: so if i hack it i can make it work
10:27 PM roycroft: mac os
10:27 PM roycroft: but it's xml
10:27 PM roycroft: so it doesn't really matter
10:27 PM perry_j1987: cups driver for it?
10:27 PM roycroft: if it worked with windows i'd install a windows vm and deal with it that way
10:28 PM roycroft: and konica don't support linux at all, other than using a generic postscript driver, which knows nothing about envelope settings
10:30 PM perry_j1987: why do you need the envelope size?
10:31 PM roycroft: it's a non-standard envelope
10:31 PM perry_j1987: you know the size of the envelope
10:31 PM roycroft: #12
10:31 PM roycroft: that's not the issue at all
10:31 PM roycroft: i can define a custom paper size easily
10:31 PM perry_j1987: you know the size 4.75x11
10:31 PM roycroft: but i have to set the paper type to envelope
10:31 PM roycroft: the machine knows that if it's an envelope it has a flap and is thicker on one side
10:31 PM roycroft: and the paper guides adjust accordingly
10:32 PM perry_j1987: have you tried the machine running as cardstock setting or some such
10:32 PM roycroft: if i set it to one of the thick settings the envelopes will jam
10:32 PM perry_j1987: *loves his old cmyk printers for jobs like this lol
10:32 PM roycroft: i have tried running envelopes with a thick 1 or thick 2 setting, and they jam
10:33 PM roycroft: it's a pretty sophisticated printer, but sophistication usually means finicky
10:33 PM perry_j1987: what happen if you run as #14 envelope
10:33 PM roycroft: no setting for that, unfortunately
10:33 PM perry_j1987: ouch
10:33 PM roycroft: #10 is the largest size with the built-in settings
10:34 PM roycroft: and we can't use #10 envelopes as we're enclosing #10 envelopes in the mailing
10:35 PM Rhine_Labs: I have a zebra ZT410 300Dpi with autopeal and rewinder.
10:35 PM roycroft: we'll be enclosing a #9 envelope, a #10 envelope, a ballot, and ballot instructions in the mailing
10:35 PM perry_j1987: incldue a label they can slap on their own envelopes haha
10:35 PM roycroft: the #9 envelope is the ballot secrecy envelope, and the #10 is the return envelope
10:36 PM roycroft: this is for an election, and the goal is to get as much participation as possible
10:36 PM roycroft: so we need to provide everything the voter needs to return the ballot
10:37 PM roycroft: anyway, once i get this hack done, i can use it for future elections, so it's worth the effort, as distasteful as the task may be
10:39 PM perry_j1987: lol
10:47 PM perry_j1987: drawbar done
10:47 PM perry_j1987: now to make some kind of knob for it
11:21 PM perry_j1987: oh holy crap
11:21 PM perry_j1987: hot curly chip just landed on my lip and i couldnt get it off
11:21 PM perry_j1987: nice burn now
11:22 PM perry_j1987: thats going to be nice tomorrow
