12:36 AM Contract_Pilot: Doing a Mini Teardown On the Bytek S125 Gang Programmer LOL
12:43 AM Contract_Pilot: then have to make a test harness for the tormach ECM board.
01:07 AM Contract_Pilot: Deejay
01:08 AM Contract_Pilot: Alternate... LOL
01:09 AM Contract_Pilot is now known as Rhine_Labs
02:06 AM XXCoder: roycroft: i bet you wish you got this https://youtu.be/6Ggu3bU4koI
02:12 AM Rhine_Labs: 89S129 Owned!! https://www.stevenrhine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/20210814_221524-scaled.jpg

05:22 AM Tom_L: morning
05:22 AM XXCoder: yo
06:07 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:08 AM XXCoder: yo
06:20 AM Deejay: re
06:41 AM Rhine_Labs: Morning
06:43 AM acer: morning
06:43 AM acer is now known as _unreal_
08:35 AM Eric_ is now known as unterhausen
08:35 AM Rhine_Labs: Brain fart I think..
10:11 AM Rhine_Labs: Dont thinnk path pilot like this NIC..
10:35 AM roycroft: blah
10:35 AM roycroft: red sky this morning, and smoke in the air
10:36 AM roycroft: my first debian upgrade seems to be working fine, but the machine doesn't do much
11:07 AM skunkworks: I really should upgrade this laptop but I don't want to figure out how to get the video pass through working again on a windows 10 vm...
11:08 AM roycroft: the upgrade took forever
11:08 AM roycroft: probably because tens of thousands of people were trying to upgrade at the same time
11:08 AM skunkworks: *it might just work tm
11:09 AM roycroft: i mostly run debian on servers, and all my servers are virtual machines, so i have the advantage of being able to take snapshots right before upgrading, and can easily roll back if things go wonky
11:10 AM roycroft: and in my home network, i actually have a spare hypervisor at the moment - when i moved my machines out of the data center i put one of them in the rack at home to extract some data from the vms on it
11:10 AM roycroft: i can shift all my vms to that machine, upgrade the hypervisor (i use proxmox, which runs on debian), and then shift them back
11:10 AM roycroft: that's whenever proxmox support debian 11, which may be a while
12:06 PM Thorhian: I think LCNC and maybe servers are the only things I'd use debian for.
12:07 PM roycroft: same here
12:07 PM roycroft: i use mac os for workstatokns
12:07 PM roycroft: workstations
12:07 PM roycroft: because it's unix with apps
12:07 PM roycroft: although it's sadly becoming more ios than unix
12:07 PM roycroft: so at some point i may have to reassess my workstation configuration
12:08 PM Thorhian: I'm kind of sick of apple tbh, but that's a different matter. For a workstation I'd probably use Fedora or Arch believe it or not, unless I needed better support for something like ROCm.
12:09 PM Thorhian: PopOS would be another option.
01:27 PM roycroft: i have an older imac on which i installed linux mint, and have been trying it coerce it into being a functional workstation, but i haven't gotten there yet
01:27 PM roycroft: as well, i bought a fairly recent acer laptop earlier this year that is running debian, and again, i'm trying to make it a useful linux worstation, but again, i haven't gotten there
01:28 PM roycroft: i'm pretty spoiled by the tightly-integrated user interface of mac os
01:28 PM roycroft: and that i can buy a brand new mac, unbox it, and be doing useful work on it in minutes, not hours or days or weeks

03:37 PM enleth: roycroft: consider trying NixOS, it's weird as fuck, throws any semblance of what's "normal" out the window with extreme prejudice, but the end result just works so well
03:37 PM enleth: the #1 reason for using it on a primary workstation is working system-wide rollbacks
03:39 PM enleth: effectively zero chance of getting hosed by an update right when you need the thing working
03:41 PM enleth: and if I ever need to set up the thing anew, after storage failure or whatever, all I need is backup of my homedir and a single config file that defines how the entire system is built and configured
03:42 PM enleth: Thorhian: ^
03:58 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:31 PM Thorhian: enleth: I forgot about Nix, that's definitely an option as well.
05:02 PM solarwind: Hi guys, is forging a signature a felony?
05:03 PM solarwind: The UPS delivery person forged my signature and left the package on my front porch and it was stolen
05:03 PM Tom_L: federal
05:03 PM solarwind: I specifically selected the shipping option with full tracking and signature required, but I wasn't at home at the time.
05:04 PM solarwind: So he called me and told me he left it on the porch outside
05:04 PM solarwind: I contacted the shipper and they contacted UPS. It's been a few weeks and they keep telling me UPS is "looking into it"
05:04 PM Tom_L: Forgery (also known as "uttering a false instrument") is a serious offense, punishable as a felony in all fifty states and by the federal government.
05:05 PM solarwind: I'm in Canada, hopefully it's just as serious here
05:05 PM Tom_L: you can't sue
05:06 PM Tom_L: https://www.avvo.com/legal-answers/can-i-press-charges-against-the-u-s-post-office-if-3614171.html
05:09 PM solarwind: That's in the USA. I'll have to see how far I can take this in Canada
05:09 PM solarwind: But to be honest, I just want my parcel, or a refund
05:33 PM roycroft: tom_l: that post was about the us postal service, not ups
05:34 PM roycroft: there's a big difference - the us government has sovereign immunity from being sued
05:34 PM Tom_L: my bad
05:34 PM roycroft: private corporations do not
05:34 PM XXCoder: can still sue usa goverment, though usually what happens is usa goverment looks into this and allow or not allow suing
05:35 PM XXCoder: because sometimes person is in the right
05:35 PM roycroft: the federal government cannot be sued
05:35 PM roycroft: people try and get rejected every time
05:35 PM XXCoder: yeah its not common to accept lawsuit
05:36 PM roycroft: anyway, this appears to be a case of forgery, from what was described
05:36 PM roycroft: and there are criminal charges for forgery
05:36 PM XXCoder: seems so
05:36 PM roycroft: i can't imagine a ups driver doing that
05:36 PM roycroft: the potential consequences are dire
05:38 PM XXCoder: I wonder what happens if fke signed package gets stolen
05:54 PM JT-Shop: nice day for a ride, just got back
06:21 PM roycroft: it is too hot and smokey for that here
06:21 PM roycroft: but the shop is somewhat comfortable
06:25 PM * JT-Shop is ready to go inside and call it a day but my deer buddy is still eating outside the machine shop door
06:26 PM XXCoder: here its just smokey. 82f isnt bad for summer
07:24 PM Rhine_Labs: UPS or USPS if UPS they not allowed to USPS will sign for you if they know you and they had the package to you.
07:24 PM Rhine_Labs: Canada rules ya on your own..
07:44 PM roycroft: it just reached 38 here
07:45 PM roycroft: even though the forecast had been adjusted down
07:45 PM roycroft: the smoke has cleared a bit, and the sun is out, so that may be why we got warmer
07:46 PM roycroft: ironically, having a big fire complex nearby actually keeps the temperature lower
07:49 PM XXCoder: depends on how much it shades sun but yeah
07:49 PM XXCoder: roy you saw video i linked to you?
07:51 PM roycroft: no, but i've been gone for a couple hours
08:00 PM MrHindsight[m]: every Canadian customers asks us to NOT USE UPS
08:15 PM roycroft: canada post are reliable, but glacially slow
08:15 PM roycroft: i guess fedex and dhl are the primary options
