07:32 AM Rhine_Labs: All my work is done bed time now.
09:27 AM unterhaus: Does a pi4 have decent latency even with a wireless connection?
09:44 AM Tom_itx: unterhaus, it would work ok with an mesa ethernet card
09:52 AM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
05:47 PM Tom_L: skunkworks!!! you forgot to tell me!
05:48 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, looks like you got more on the way too
05:49 PM JT-Cave: I was trying to look but no connection lol
05:50 PM Tom_L: i usually check the phone for that
05:50 PM JT-Cave: yea just west of us now
05:51 PM Tom_L: oh, the i5 won't run 16bit apps now either

06:53 PM XXCoder: keep in mind some brake plates still use abestos
06:53 PM XXCoder: wait that isnt brake drum right?
06:54 PM XXCoder: bah lol
06:56 PM skunkworks: lol - I was boring something on the lathe and had to keep my finger on the boring bar to keep it from rining
06:56 PM skunkworks: rignting
06:56 PM skunkworks: ringing
07:00 PM _unreal_: heh https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4574747
07:12 PM _unreal_: sigh....
07:13 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, we used pennies once to fill a cavity we were machining
07:13 PM Tom_L: the bank wasn't so happy when we went to cash them back in
07:13 PM Tom_L: a blower hat
07:14 PM skunkworks: lol
07:15 PM MrHindsight[m]: good way to borrow a bunch of copper
07:15 PM XXCoder: it costs 1.4 penny to make one penny
07:16 PM Tom_L: we did the inside first but filled it up like a piggy bank to do the outside
07:16 PM XXCoder: pennies really nned to go away
07:16 PM Tom_L: NO! they're quite handy!!
07:16 PM XXCoder: just get $100 worth before it ends
07:17 PM Tom_L: MrHindsight[m], i doubt they're copper anymore
07:17 PM XXCoder: it still has copper
07:17 PM XXCoder: just not a lot of it
07:21 PM Tom_L: XXCoder, we should get china to make em for us, it would be cheaper
07:21 PM Tom_L: they're pretty good at the $100s
07:22 PM XXCoder: lol
07:22 PM XXCoder: probably butteralloy metal with vapor deposted copper on it
07:22 PM XXCoder: if its not just plastic with copper on it
07:22 PM Tom_L: still has to meet weight
07:23 PM XXCoder: yeah would need to be fairly dense plastic
07:24 PM roycroft: pennies are essentially copper-plated
07:24 PM roycroft: it's not worth trying to extract the copper from them
07:24 PM roycroft: and they should go away
07:24 PM XXCoder: yeah though more than just thin vapor depostion
07:25 PM XXCoder: agreed
07:25 PM roycroft: along with the $1 bill, which should have gone away decades ago
07:25 PM XXCoder: we really need to have space program too. plenty of metal out there.
07:25 PM XXCoder: one metallic rock can serve earth needs at current level for long time indeed
07:26 PM Tom_L: roycroft, what would the cheap titty dancers do then?
07:26 PM roycroft: canadians have been feeding them $2 bills for a long time
07:27 PM roycroft: now granted, canadian money is not worth very much
07:27 PM Tom_L: they stopped printing those too
07:27 PM Tom_L: i've got an old and a new one
07:27 PM roycroft: yeah, they have twonies now
07:27 PM roycroft: or do they spell it toonies?
07:27 PM roycroft: i haven't been to canada in a long time
07:28 PM roycroft: and when i was there i did not hang out at the exotic bars
07:28 PM MrHindsight[m]: i think the border just opened again
07:28 PM * roycroft wonders how white women can be considered exotic in canada, but that's a different conversation
07:29 PM MrHindsight[m]: oh tomorrow if you is been vaccined
07:29 PM roycroft: i'm heading in the opposite direction tomorrow
07:29 PM roycroft: i would not want to go to bc right now
07:29 PM XXCoder: why?
07:29 PM roycroft: it's way too hot, and there are over 250 wild fires
07:29 PM Tom_L: i wouldn't go too far south
07:30 PM XXCoder: ah yeah. so many fires. though tacoma seem to be skipping smokey hellscope season this year
07:30 PM MrHindsight[m]: that is Mexico, Canada is still north
07:30 PM roycroft: i'm going to southern oregon, on the coast
07:30 PM roycroft: the nearest fires are to the northeast of where i'll be, on the other side of the siskiyou mountains
07:31 PM roycroft: i may make a day trip down to humboldt and/or mendicino county
07:31 PM roycroft: but again, no active fires of note anywhere near where i would be going
07:31 PM roycroft: as of right now
07:32 PM _unreal_: its amazing how cananda and mexico have just as much forest. and never get forest fires like cali
07:32 PM roycroft: and the forecast for eugene still calls for a highs in the upper 30s this week, with a high of 41 on thursday
07:32 PM _unreal_: HELL mexico has volcanos
07:32 PM roycroft: there are over 250 fires in british columbia right now, and multiple towns have been destroyed
07:33 PM roycroft: that's more fires than all of the us combined, i think
07:33 PM roycroft: the dixie fire is *huge*, though
07:33 PM XXCoder: ugh thursday 90f
07:33 PM roycroft: it's now the second biggest fire in california history
07:33 PM roycroft: and it's bigger than the bootleg fire
07:33 PM XXCoder: that said, whats happwning with bootleg one
07:34 PM roycroft: it's still growing, but slowly
07:34 PM roycroft: it's about 80% contained now, but full containment is not expected until october
07:35 PM roycroft: i think it's been contained in all inhabited areas, so no more evacuations
07:35 PM roycroft: that last 20% is likely really steep, rugged terrain on the eastern edge of the fire
07:36 PM roycroft: the dixie fire is at 463000 acres now
07:36 PM roycroft: the bootleg fire is 414000 acres
07:36 PM roycroft: actually, the bootleg fire is 96% contained now
07:36 PM MrHindsight[m]: https://www.evwest.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=8&products_id=476&osCsid=9439981b527dedba01064327c0ed1d2a $12k
07:37 PM roycroft: but full containment is still not expected until october
07:37 PM roycroft: 16 residences damaged and 161 destroyed
07:37 PM roycroft: 15 other structures damaged and 247 destroyed
07:38 PM MrHindsight[m]: fire bad
07:38 PM MrHindsight[m]: but sometimes fire good
07:38 PM roycroft: i drove by the fire in my neighborhood from yesterday
07:38 PM roycroft: it went right up to the edge of a filling station
07:39 PM roycroft: things could have gotten a whole lot worse
07:39 PM MrHindsight[m]: like St Helens, what is destroyed gets a rebirth
07:40 PM MrHindsight[m]: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/05/ecologist-has-been-studying-mount-st-helens-it-erupted-40-years-ago
07:40 PM roycroft: yeah, but the problem is that the rebirth takes a long time, and people keep moving here in throngs
07:40 PM roycroft: not to mention that people breed excessively around here, like in the rest of the usa
07:41 PM MrHindsight[m]: how is that a problem?
07:41 PM MrHindsight[m]: people just are
07:41 PM roycroft: there are way to many people
07:42 PM MrHindsight[m]: will self correct
07:42 PM roycroft: way too
07:42 PM roycroft: yes, and likely not before i die, but it would be best if we figured out how to manage our population before the self-correction
07:42 PM MrHindsight[m]: well you're just being selfsih :)
07:43 PM roycroft: i'm selfish because i'm thinking about how to make things better after i'm dead?
07:43 PM MrHindsight[m]: self corrects
07:44 PM roycroft: i was shopping for a few things for my camping trip today - i like to augment the gear a little every year
07:45 PM roycroft: i got some cheap and simple things, like a can opener and grater, so i don't have to borrow from my kitchen every time i go on a trip
07:45 PM roycroft: but i was thinking of getting another yeti cooler
07:45 PM Tom_L: good we weren't given the ocean as a habitat
07:45 PM roycroft: a small one for holding beverages i thought would be nice
07:46 PM roycroft: they cost $150, which is a lot of money, but i thought that since i did not go camping last year at all, and therefore did not spend any money on camping gear last year it would be ok
07:46 PM roycroft: but when i got to the store the $150 coolers were now $250
07:47 PM roycroft: so no new yeti cooler this year
07:53 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
07:59 PM XXCoder: roycroft: nice 96%
08:08 PM roycroft: yeah, if it stays that way
08:09 PM MrHindsight[m]: how much pushrod pitting is acceptable?
08:10 PM MrHindsight[m]: <0.001"depth and <0.010" dia.?
08:10 PM MrHindsight[m]: "microns don't matter"
08:18 PM XXCoder: i guess that depends a lot on what part context is
08:19 PM Tom_L: you would need to know the engineering safety margin built in the design
08:19 PM MrHindsight[m]: nah
08:26 PM MrHindsight[m]: 8mm od, 2.5mm id, 156mm length
08:27 PM MrHindsight[m]: 2.75mm wall thickness
08:29 PM Tom_L: those aren't very long
08:38 PM MrHindsight[m]: nope and only 1% pit depth max, so I'd say well within the good range as long as the pits aren't deeper and grow
08:38 PM MrHindsight[m]: no bends
09:19 PM solarwind: _unreal_ had a small head injury the other day and felt dizzy
09:20 PM solarwind: just been resting. I should get it checked out
09:21 PM solarwind: I hit my head hard on a plastic paper towel dispenser, the kind you find in restaurants. It knocked it off its mounts and broke the plastic.
09:22 PM unterhausen: I met a rattlesnake today and recorded it, but moving the video from my phone got rid of the rattle sound
09:22 PM solarwind: The plastic was soft enough not to cause any lacerations on the head, but it was hard enough to make me lose my balance and have to lie down. I've hit my head on things before, but never as bad as this
09:22 PM unterhausen: I didn't know timber rattlers were safety yellow
09:29 PM roycroft: that's an eastern rattlesnake
09:30 PM roycroft: i don't know that i've ever seen one
09:59 PM _unreal_: unterhausen, how did you transfer it?
10:00 PM unterhausen: I uploaded it to google pictures and then downloaded it to my computer
10:01 PM _unreal_: oooooooo picture?
10:01 PM _unreal_: should transfer to drive
10:01 PM _unreal_: google drive or to windows one drive
10:01 PM roycroft: i just found a new road to the coast that i've never traveled
10:01 PM _unreal_: or just use a usb cable
10:01 PM roycroft: awesome
10:02 PM roycroft: i shall take it tomorrow
10:02 PM roycroft: it's called the coos bay wagon road
10:02 PM roycroft: must be a fun drive with a name like that
10:02 PM _unreal_: is it called the Oregon trail?
10:02 PM unterhausen: They put in a new trail up the gap just in time for my birthday present
10:02 PM roycroft: this is by no means a new road
10:02 PM roycroft: it's probably 150 years old
10:02 PM roycroft: or more
10:03 PM roycroft: just new to me
10:03 PM unterhausen: The old one is so steep and rutted that I always had to push my bike
10:03 PM _unreal_: SEEEEEE ITS THE Oregon trail?
10:03 PM _unreal_: lol
10:03 PM roycroft: there are not a lot of paved roads from the valley to the coast that i've not driven
10:03 PM roycroft: it's not the oregon trail - that ends up in lake oswego, near portland
10:05 PM XXCoder: roy seems thursday will be 90f, AND partially cloudy
10:05 PM XXCoder: it's going to be "fun"
10:06 PM roycroft: it will be 17 degrees where i shall be on thursday
10:06 PM roycroft: unless that's the day i go to california, in which case it will be 21 or so
10:06 PM XXCoder: can I join you
10:06 PM roycroft: but the gale winds are already blowing at the campground
10:07 PM roycroft: erecting my tent may be challenging
10:07 PM roycroft: sure, all you have to do is drive down the coast
10:08 PM roycroft: _unreal_ : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lduyCgk7WY
10:16 PM XXCoder: .
10:48 PM Rhine_Labs: Evening
10:58 PM rszemeti: Hi, I was trying to log in to the forum, but for some reason, it says my login is blocked when I enter the correct username/password ... can one of the moderators unblock it please?

11:10 PM Rhine_Labs: rszemeti you may want to post your username so a mod will be able to find you.
11:11 PM rszemeti: I always use this username
11:11 PM rszemeti: ^^
11:13 PM roycroft: so i just did a bit of research
11:13 PM roycroft: turns out the coos bay wagon road is the last intact wagon road in oregon from the coast inland
11:14 PM roycroft: all the rest have either been abandoned and barely maintained as farmer roads, or paved/straightened/widened and turned into the major roads to the coast
11:14 PM roycroft: so yeah, that's my path tomorrow for sure
11:15 PM rszemeti: nice to see some of the old names are still active, cradek, jepler, alex joni, dr pugh et al, some things stay the same :)
11:16 PM rszemeti: I seem to have some free time again, I'd like to investigate if there is any progress on getting emc to work like my old router hardware controller
11:16 PM rszemeti: specifically, retracting the spindly if the program is paused
11:17 PM rszemeti: and lowering it back again if un-paused
11:17 PM rszemeti: I really miss that feature of the cranky old hardware controller
11:18 PM rszemeti: I'll check back later
11:18 PM Rhine_Labs: MY Forum name is Contract_Pilot
11:54 PM _unreal_: Rhine_Labs, just because your licensed to kill doesn't mean you should flaunt it ;)
11:57 PM roycroft: are about, jt?
11:57 PM roycroft: it's pretty late, i know
