01:09 AM Deejay: moin
04:19 AM Tom_L: morning
05:24 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:24 AM XXCoder: mornings
09:33 AM Tom_L: sunny 96F today
09:50 AM Roguish: upper 90's here today also.............
10:07 AM * JT-Shop just figured out that ups has free shipping pouches!
10:19 AM roycroft: it's going to get hot here again too
10:21 AM roycroft: 38 on friday, the day i was planning on eradicating the rest of the blackberries
10:22 AM roycroft: i found a garage door opener rated for single panel doors last night for a decent price
10:22 AM roycroft: it's belt drive even, and will arrive on friday
10:23 AM Tom_L: that chamberlain from lowes?
10:23 AM roycroft: no, skylink from home depot
10:23 AM Tom_L: never heard of that one
10:24 AM roycroft: i'm not familiar with skylink, but i looked around and it's fairly common
10:24 AM roycroft: not as common as chamberlain or genie, but still carried by a lot of vendors
10:25 AM roycroft: and the reviews were not out of line compared to genie and chamberlain
10:25 AM roycroft: i always keep in mind that all the negative reviews of products are written by internet users, and man of the positive reviews are written by the manufacturer/vendor
10:25 AM roycroft: many
10:26 AM roycroft: time will tell if it was a wise purchase
10:29 AM * JT-Shop should have started on the back side with the trim and learned the lessons back there...
10:31 AM roycroft: dark stain will help :)
10:32 AM JT-Shop: the mistakes will be on the bottom :)
10:47 AM roycroft: my big "mistake" yesterday was routing some grooves in the uprights of my lamp frame before sanding those edges
10:47 AM roycroft: there's a weak edge now that will break if i power sand it
10:48 AM roycroft: but i should be able to safely hand sand those edges
10:48 AM roycroft: not the worst mistake to make, but in future i'll sand before i groove
10:51 AM roycroft: i might just hand sand all the parts to see how long it takes
11:28 AM solarwind: I've been having fun argon soldering lately
11:29 AM solarwind: Completely unnecessary, but it keeps the expensive cartridge tips on my JBC from oxidizing
11:30 AM solarwind: Considering the cost of the tips vs the cost of argon, it actually might be totally worth it.
12:27 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, what's the advantage for finger joints in the front and dado in the back of a drawer?
12:27 PM roycroft: finger joints are stronger than dadoes
12:28 PM roycroft: almost all the stress on a drawer is at the front
12:28 PM roycroft: so you need strong joints there
12:28 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks
12:28 PM roycroft: you don't pull or push on a drawer back
12:29 PM JT-Shop: do you make the back above the bottom of the drawer so the bottom is slid in after glue up?
12:29 PM roycroft: almost always
12:30 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks
12:30 PM roycroft: i'll usually slide it on when i assemble, to help square the drawer up, and then remove it until the glue sets
12:30 PM JT-Shop: ah ok that makes sense
12:31 PM * JT-Shop goes to town then starts building drawers
12:31 PM roycroft: and i always put finish on the insides of drawers before assembly
12:31 PM roycroft: it's just too hard to do so neatly after
12:31 PM roycroft: i cut all the joints
12:31 PM roycroft: then mask off the glue surfaces
12:31 PM roycroft: then apply finish
12:31 PM JT-Shop: hmm ok I'll try that
12:32 PM roycroft: in the dadoes i just mask the bottoms - i don't worry about the sides
12:32 PM roycroft: i also pre-finish both sides of the drawer backs
12:33 PM roycroft: but i don't finish the outsides of the drawers until after they're assembled - i usually make the dovetails or finger joints stand a wee bit proud, so i can plane them flush after assembly
12:33 PM roycroft: so pre-finishing would not work out well there
12:34 PM roycroft: i also like to route a thumbnail profile on the tops of the drawer sides and back
12:34 PM roycroft: i think it looks a lot neater that way, and there are no sharp edges
12:35 PM roycroft: you can get imported thumbnail cutters on ebay, but william ng has them custom made for him by whiteside, so if you want a quality cutter you can order from william's website
12:35 PM roycroft: it's probably too late for that on this project though
12:37 PM JT-Shop: don't even know what that is but I'll look on his website
12:37 PM roycroft: a thumbnail profile is a shallow arc
12:37 PM roycroft: if you look at the pics of the drawers that i posted yesterday you can see them
12:38 PM JT-Shop: https://wnwoodworkingschool.com/product/fingernail-router-bit/
12:38 PM roycroft: yeah, that would be it
12:39 PM roycroft: fingernail/thumbnail - they're called both
12:39 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Sander-Cabinet/Sander-Cabinet-2.jpeg
12:39 PM roycroft: that probably shows it best - it's fairly visible on the drawer back
12:39 PM JT-Shop: where does the bearing ride?
12:39 PM roycroft: it's a subtle feature, but significant
12:40 PM roycroft: i don't use the bearing - i've removed it from mine
12:40 PM roycroft: i just use a router fence
12:40 PM roycroft: and you have to offset the outfeed side of the fence a wee bit
12:40 PM JT-Shop: yeah didn't make any sense to me to have a bearing on it
12:40 PM roycroft: i'm not sure why he has them made that way
12:40 PM roycroft: i've never seen anything he's made where it would work
12:41 PM roycroft: perhaps whiteside just said "this is how we're going to make it"
12:51 PM roycroft: anyway, if you intend to make more drawers in the future, i would recommend getting one of those cutters
12:52 PM roycroft: they would also be useful for things like the front edges of shelves
12:56 PM JT-Shop: oh the trim on the back side came out real well after perfecting my technique
01:05 PM solarwind: Does automotive oil or any other cheap oil make a "good enough" cutting oil for something like a reciprocating saw?
01:05 PM solarwind: I don't want to waste my tap magic oil on a scrapping operation
01:05 PM solarwind: But at the same time, the blades last forever if you dunk them in oil
01:05 PM CloudEvil: Bacon grease?
01:05 PM solarwind: I don't have that on hand unfortunately
01:05 PM solarwind: I have lots of automotive oil and some hydraulic oil
01:05 PM roycroft: i hear that homer has a large stash of retirement grease from all the bacon he's cooked over the years
01:05 PM solarwind: What makes cutting oil special and different from something like AW32 hydraulic oil?
01:05 PM roycroft: if you pop over to springfield he'll probably give you a bit of it
01:07 PM solarwind: Hmmm, so gear oil would make for a decent cheap cutting oil? It's quite viscous too
01:09 PM roycroft: it might do well for you
01:09 PM roycroft: other than the smell
01:09 PM roycroft: bar oil for a chainsaw would probably work as well
01:10 PM solarwind: I'll try that, thank you!
01:11 PM roycroft: bar oil is nice and thick, and doesn't smell as bad as gear oil
01:15 PM solarwind: I wear a P100 respirator (sometimes with organic vapour cartridge) due to my sensitive lungs, so I wouldn't even be able to tell
01:16 PM * CloudEvil wonders if Project Farm has done a video on this
01:16 PM roycroft: i'm not sure a p100 filter would remove sulphur odors
01:17 PM CloudEvil: for metal cutting, IME, slower blade can make it last much, much longer
01:17 PM roycroft: it's for organic compounds and particulates primarily
01:17 PM roycroft: i think ammonium as well
01:17 PM roycroft: it depends on the combination of filters
01:18 PM roycroft: it's primarily for particulates though
01:18 PM roycroft: the sulphur odor is not hazardous, but it can be unpleasant
01:38 PM Roguish_shop: Best of James Bond soundtracks on ......
02:30 PM perry_j1987: hows it going everyone
02:34 PM JT-Shop: HOT
02:35 PM JT-Shop: but tomorrow claims to be even hotter
02:37 PM perry_j1987: ya it is
02:37 PM perry_j1987: im glad to have a portable ac unit in the shop here
02:46 PM perry_j1987: woo just paid the big price
02:46 PM perry_j1987: now i have a pneumatic 5c chuck enroute along with a set of 5c collets that i need for my stuff
02:47 PM JT-Shop: chuck for?
02:47 PM perry_j1987: now to order another chuck backing plate blank so i can get it mounted right away as well
02:47 PM perry_j1987: for my 9x20 lathe
02:49 PM perry_j1987: need to put in an order for a bunch of straight shank er tool holders too
02:49 PM perry_j1987: and get this thing setup as. a chucker lathe
02:53 PM roycroft: it's overcast here today, but it is going to get really hot
02:56 PM roycroft: i hand sanded my lamp frame parts, and it went at least as fast as power sanding would go, and is a lot neater
02:56 PM roycroft: setting up fixtures to sand small parts is time-consuming, and would only work well in a production environment
03:39 PM _unreal_: now honestly roycroft, rubbing and sanding your lamp isnt going to make it glow any brighter.
04:07 PM Eric_ is now known as unterhaus
04:07 PM * JT-Shop tries to figure out what size to cut the drawer boards...
04:10 PM robotustra: working on export of the path to gcode a little bit
04:11 PM robotustra: hopefully will try to run own g-code by the end of the week
04:12 PM robotustra: within linear interpolation at least
04:12 PM JT-Shop: nice
04:13 PM JT-Shop: I'm about done with the basics for my parallel port configuration tool, still need to sort out gantries
04:14 PM robotustra: config tool is written in what language?
04:15 PM JT-Shop: python 3
04:15 PM JT-Shop: and pyqt5
04:16 PM robotustra: I'm too old school for python
04:16 PM JT-Shop: roycroft, my wife wants an oven squirrel for her birthday https://www.woodcraft.com/media/W1siZiIsIjIwMjEvMDYvMzAvMDgvMDcvMTEvNDY5LzEwMl9PdmVuX1NxdWlycmVsLnBkZiJdXQ/102_Oven-Squirrel.pdf?sha=3eb2f06f731fc4bf
04:16 PM JT-Shop: you program in pascal?
04:16 PM robotustra: well
04:16 PM roycroft: i'v seen oven squirrels before
04:16 PM roycroft: make her one :)
04:17 PM robotustra: the first one was pascal, then fortran, then c/c++
04:17 PM robotustra: and so on
04:17 PM JT-Shop: she was reading my woodcraft magazine!
04:18 PM roycroft: that's dangerous
04:18 PM robotustra: normal wives wear gloves
04:18 PM robotustra: for such opertions
04:18 PM * roycroft learned pascal on a vax running vms, and then did pascal coding on an apple ii
04:19 PM robotustra: what if she pull too much? all diner will be on a floor
04:19 PM robotustra: roycroft, I'm not so old
04:19 PM robotustra: we alrealy had 386
04:21 PM JT-Shop: I dabbled in assembly, quick basic and a bit of c and even wrote a dxf to g code program in golang
04:21 PM robotustra: I didn't find any language more attractive to learn after c
04:21 PM JT-Shop: but python is my preferred language
04:21 PM JT-Shop: python 3.6 or newer is pretty good
04:21 PM robotustra: they just do the same thing in the different syntax but worse
04:22 PM robotustra: is py3.6 is fast as c?
04:22 PM JT-Shop: I _think_ golang is as fast as c but doubt python is
04:23 PM robotustra: if it's as fast as c but do the same thing, why I should switch to golang? :)
04:24 PM robotustra: or even learn it :)
04:24 PM JT-Shop: it's more for web sites I think
04:25 PM robotustra: yes, and all web development should go to hell
04:25 PM robotustra: it should be rewritten from scratch
04:26 PM roycroft: as a friend from another network always says, "the web is lame, dicksmack"
04:26 PM roycroft: while his use of language may be questionable, he may be on to something
04:27 PM robotustra: hope it will be done within 5 years, otherwise I'll need to get rid of web too
04:27 PM robotustra: I decided not to watch youtube any more
04:28 PM roycroft: as long as the world is ruled by ferengi, the web will not go away
04:28 PM roycroft: there is too much profit in it
04:28 PM robotustra: too low signal/noise ration
04:28 PM robotustra: ratio
04:29 PM robotustra: as soon as the faster internet version will apear - the old one will be abandoned
04:33 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, looks like a cnc wood project :)
04:43 PM Tom_L: sad day: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/zz-top-bassist-dusty-hill-dead-obit-1203694/
04:47 PM robotustra: ZZ = 72
04:47 PM robotustra: looks similar
04:48 PM roycroft: yeah, i read about that a short while ago
04:48 PM roycroft: i was never a fan of their music, but zz top were unique and talented, and from what i'm told always put on a great show
04:49 PM Tom_L: the only band that kept it's original members
04:54 PM JT-Shop: the squirrel? yeah
04:55 PM Tom_L: that kinda reminded me of the mylars we used to digitize parts off of
04:56 PM Tom_L: all sheetmetal with wide tolerance
04:56 PM Tom_L: (for making the punches for them)
05:02 PM roycroft: you don't know that they kept their original members
05:02 PM roycroft: all you know is that they kept their original beards
05:03 PM _unreal_: one of the ZZ TOP band memebers tied today
05:04 PM Tom_L: you don't read the scrollback do you?
05:05 PM roycroft: wow
05:05 PM roycroft: my garage door opener was delivered already
05:05 PM roycroft: and today is july 30
05:05 PM roycroft: because that's when it was delivered
05:05 PM Tom_L: so why isn't it installed?
05:05 PM roycroft: because it's not scheduled to be installed until july 18
05:05 PM XXCoder: time traveling door
05:06 PM Tom_L: black hole
05:06 PM _unreal_: twilight door
05:06 PM roycroft: the home depot website has an intersting concept of time
05:06 PM _unreal_: zone
05:07 PM Tom_L: you're letting their installers put it in?
05:07 PM roycroft: no, i scheduled that with myself
05:07 PM XXCoder: hopefully you will be able to come in right time and do good job
05:07 PM roycroft: i'll probably show up a week late to do the job
05:07 PM XXCoder: installers tend to have issues ya know
05:08 PM roycroft: and i'll probably go on break when it's partially installed, and not come back until much later, at a very inconvenient time
05:08 PM roycroft: most likely when i'm not home
05:08 PM Tom_L: july 18 won't come around for a little less than a year now
05:09 PM Tom_L: you've got plenty of time
05:09 PM roycroft: well, the installer is only a week or so late so far
05:09 PM roycroft: which means ahead of schedule
05:10 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/saw-stop/saw-cabinet-05.jpg
05:11 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/saw-stop/saw-cabinet-06.jpg
05:11 PM JT-Shop: so I have a box and I'm trying to think of what kind of drawers to make...
05:11 PM roycroft: it's looking good, jt-shop
05:11 PM JT-Shop: thanks
05:12 PM JT-Shop: I'm thinking of recessed drawers even with the front
05:12 PM JT-Shop: maybe with 1/8" gap all around???
05:12 PM roycroft: inset drawers are the hardest to fit, but they'll keep the dust out better than overlay drawers
05:12 PM roycroft: or 1/16" all around
05:13 PM JT-Shop: I can go for 1/16", just need to cut some shims I think
05:13 PM roycroft: on shop fixtures i generally make full overlay drawers, because they're the easiest to fit
05:13 PM XXCoder: im curious on difference on drawer corners, just put panels on vs 45 degree ends whats difference
05:13 PM roycroft: i usually have the front of the top stick out a bit, and tha thelps keep the dust down
05:14 PM roycroft: neither butt joints nor 45 degree miter joints are very strong, on their own
05:14 PM JT-Shop: the sawstop cabinet will be under the extension
05:14 PM JT-Shop: XXCoder, I'm using box joints on the front and a dado in the back
05:14 PM roycroft: butt joints are end grain to long grain, and miters are end grain to end grain
05:15 PM roycroft: end grain is extremely weak as a glue surface
05:15 PM XXCoder: erm oops thought that picture was drawer, but its cabient lol
05:15 PM JT-Shop: a lock miter is a pretty good joint but a pia to set the router up lol
05:15 PM JT-Shop: yeah that's just the carcass
05:15 PM XXCoder: i guess 45 degree joins is for look
05:16 PM roycroft: jt-shop: overlay drawer fronts will take like 1/5 or less the time to install than inset drawer fronts
05:16 PM roycroft: which is why i use them on shop fixtures
05:17 PM roycroft: i make up drawer boxes out of 12mm bb plywood, install them with drawer slides about 1/16" behind the front of the cabinet, and then apply overlay drawer fronts on the boxes
05:17 PM roycroft: that 1/16" inset makes sure the drawers close flush
05:18 PM roycroft: for spacing between drawers i use strips of plastic laminate
05:18 PM roycroft: they're just the right thickness
05:18 PM JT-Shop: do I need to put some stretchers between the drawers? I was thinking flush I won't need anything else
05:18 PM roycroft: for fine furniture drawers, you want to dovetail them, and go afor a piston fit
05:19 PM roycroft: if they're inset you need stretchers, but if they're overlay you can get away without them
05:19 PM roycroft: i always install a face frame anyway
05:19 PM JT-Shop: so for the drawer itself make it 1" shorter than the front?
05:19 PM roycroft: it just keeps things cleaner
05:20 PM roycroft: something like that
05:20 PM roycroft: a little shorter
05:21 PM roycroft: if you dado the drawer backs you're already using up 1/2"
05:21 PM roycroft: plus another inch for the front and back of the drawer
05:21 PM roycroft: so if you make the drawer sides 1/2" shorter than the depth of the cabinet, your usable space inside the drawer will be 2" less than the depth of the cabinet
05:21 PM JT-Shop: I have 20" tracks and 21 1/2" of depth
05:22 PM roycroft: full extension tracks?
05:22 PM JT-Shop: aye
05:22 PM roycroft: then make the sides 21"
05:22 PM roycroft: that will give you clearance at the back
05:22 PM roycroft: and the inside of the drawer back will be flush with the front when it's fully extended
05:22 PM JT-Shop: ok thanks
05:22 PM roycroft: so that's perfect
05:23 PM roycroft: time to glue up the lamp frame
05:23 PM JT-Shop: for inset I need to subtract the drawer front thickness from the sides?
05:23 PM roycroft: and i'm using hide glue, so it will go fast :)
05:23 PM JT-Shop: enjoy
05:23 PM roycroft: no
05:24 PM roycroft: because your finger joints have to go all the way to the outside dimensions
05:24 PM roycroft: you might want to cad it up so that it makes total sense
05:25 PM JT-Shop: I'm adding a drawer front to the drawer itself
05:26 PM JT-Shop: I'll be drawing them up for sure
05:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: who makes a 2 cent air flow sensor that can detect breathing through a tube, horn, clarinet etc? direction doesn't matter, bad or good breath, usual human temp range
05:32 PM CloudEvil: 2 cent?
05:32 PM CloudEvil: 'bad or good' ?
05:32 PM CaptHindsight[m]: breath
05:33 PM CloudEvil: What isa badbreath
05:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: 2 cent or similar, electronic detection
05:33 PM CloudEvil: Thermistor may come close
05:33 PM CloudEvil: Mic also
05:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: you don't want to know what bad breath is :)
05:34 PM CloudEvil: Your question is meaningless without a definition of teh difference.
05:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: bad/good is kidding
05:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: quality of breath doesn't matter
05:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: yeah off the shelf a thermistor or similar
05:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: printed voice coil on paper with magnet
05:38 PM CaptHindsight[m]: or crystal mic
05:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: capacitive mic etc
05:54 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, you should cut the drawer fronts to look like box joints so when they're closed they look like one :D
05:55 PM Roguish: well, 98 here now......
05:55 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://www.knowles.com/docs/default-source/default-document-library/sisonic-design-guide.pdf?sfvrsn=ddda77b1_6 33 cents
05:58 PM Rab: CaptHindsight[m], inkjet printed film strain gage obstructing a tube? https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0964-1726/22/10/105028
05:59 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Rab: ah why they asked me, I knew there had to be some recent paper on it, thank you
06:13 PM roycroft: it's only 34 here - the heat wave won't start in earnest until tomorrow
06:14 PM roycroft: and i've already decided that the height of my prototype lamp is fine, but it's too wide
06:14 PM roycroft: i have to figure out a way to make it narrower and still have the kumiko panels work out
06:16 PM Guest3735: I've got a weird issue, my Y-Axis just won't go down anymore in Gmoccappy after moving the machine physically.
06:16 PM roycroft: sounds like a loose wire
06:16 PM Guest3735: I'm running a parallel port. It still works in stepconf up and down, but with the same configuration, it doesn't work in Gmoccappy
06:17 PM unterhaus: it's funny seeing people talk about heat waves, it's going to be cool here tomorrow
06:17 PM roycroft: it will be cool again here, once the human race dies out and the planet has some time to recover
06:17 PM XXCoder: minor heat wave here
06:18 PM XXCoder: high 80s
06:18 PM XXCoder: f'
06:18 PM XXCoder: though more like mid 80s f now, predictions changed
06:19 PM roycroft: at the very least, it will be cool here again once the sun fizzles out and turnd into a white dwarf
06:19 PM roycroft: turns
06:19 PM XXCoder: wait till it turns into iron ball.
06:19 PM XXCoder: earth, if any remains, would be rather cold then
06:19 PM Guest3735: roycroft, ... that's what I thought, but it works in stepconfig. it's driving me crazy. I looked in Halstatus and watched the pin go high and low as expected when changing direction. I don't know what the next step would be. Maybe physically measuring the voltage on the direction pin?
06:20 PM roycroft: well, it will become a red giant before it is a white dwarf
06:20 PM roycroft: and things will get really hot when that happens
06:20 PM Guest3735: *is this the weather channel*
06:20 PM roycroft: weather happens
06:20 PM roycroft: people talk about happening things
06:21 PM perry_j1987: axis wont move in gmoccappy if the weather doesnt cooperate i've heard
06:21 PM Guest3735: come on everybody focus on MY PROBLEM lol
06:21 PM roycroft: i'm not the best person to discuss your y axis problem, but perhaps there's a wiring issue with a limit switch that is causing this?
06:22 PM * roycroft hands guest3735 a chill pill
06:22 PM roycroft: it will all be fine, eventually :)
06:22 PM unterhaus: have you tried hitting something with a hammer? That always worked in the old days
06:22 PM perry_j1987: its comedy hour
06:22 PM roycroft: i think he wants to hit me with a hammer
06:22 PM roycroft: i guarantee that won't fix the y axis problem
06:22 PM unterhaus: if it works in step config, then something is wrong with your config
06:23 PM roycroft: it may fix some other things
06:23 PM roycroft: i heard "physically moved the machine"
06:23 PM roycroft: and nothing else regarding the nature of the problem
06:23 PM unterhaus: a big enough hammer will physically move the machine
06:24 PM roycroft: i drew the conclusion that the config has not been modified since the transit procedure
06:24 PM unterhaus: yeah, there is a config mismatch
06:24 PM roycroft: so i focused on potential physical problems
06:24 PM unterhaus: I only scrolled back until he said it works in stepconfig
06:25 PM Guest3735: I think I'll put together the longest multimeter lead ever seen now so I can watch wether the voltage on the DIR pin actually changes in Gmoccappy
06:25 PM roycroft: i'm assuming guest3735 is not withholding critical information
06:25 PM Guest3735: If yes, maybe it's hammer time :)
06:25 PM roycroft: such as "oh yeah, i also modified the config after i moved the machine"
06:26 PM roycroft: or maybe set up a webcam
06:26 PM Guest3735: No I didn't modify anything .. and in Hal status and in the oscillocope I can the pin change HIGH/LOW
06:26 PM unterhaus: I don't know, there have been a couple times he says it works in stepconf
06:26 PM roycroft: yes
06:26 PM unterhaus: does it move with stepconf?
06:26 PM Guest3735: I have a webcam to watch the machine..
06:26 PM unterhaus: I assumed that was apres move
06:27 PM Tom_L: Guest3735, it must be a wiring issue then
06:27 PM roycroft: in summary: "i physically moved the machine. after i moved it, i could not move the y axis with gmoccappy, but i could with stepconf. the ONLY thing i did was physically move the machine"
06:27 PM roycroft: i am still thinking it's a wiring problem
06:29 PM unterhaus: okay, the stepconf thing must be a non sequitur then
06:29 PM Tom_L: check for a bad/broken pin on the parallel port wires too
06:30 PM Guest3735: Maybe I'm withholding something: The stepconf configuration is not actually what the gmoccapy config is directly based on, but all the pin configuration are the same and it worked before without a change. I'm buidling a long lead now.
06:34 PM Tom_L: if no software changes were made then it should work as it did before the move
06:34 PM Tom_L: check all the plugs
06:34 PM Tom_L: they are a good failure point
06:36 PM _unreal_: heh
06:36 PM _unreal_: withholding information
06:39 PM unterhaus: I don't see how stepconf can move the stage. Maybe I'm missing something
06:40 PM unterhaus: step dir tends to work or not.
06:40 PM unterhaus: since timing is important, a long lead may just add uncertainty
06:47 PM Guest3735: thanks unterhaus Tom_L and roycroft

06:48 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
06:48 PM Guest3735: I have built and 5m multimeter lead and I see the voltage on the DIR pin directly at the stepper driver module is only chaning from 0 when UP to 0.56V when DOWN .. thats a starting point I guess
06:51 PM Tom_L: check it on the other end too
06:51 PM Guest3735: in stepconf it DIR = 0 Volts when down and 4.22 Volts when UP ;-/
06:52 PM Tom_L: bad gnd too
07:05 PM Guest3735: Success!!!(ish) I noticed I've been running the machine with the step pin inverted (it used to work). Switched it around and now it goes up and down.
07:05 PM Guest3735: but still 0 Volts when UP 0.5 Volts when down
07:07 PM Guest3735: (ish)
07:08 PM Tom_L: something might need a pullup?
07:08 PM Tom_L: i would certainly address that
07:08 PM Guest3735: +Tom_L I think it's something like that. The other change was a parallel port extension cord. But it works in stepconf so should be ok. That's what gets me.
07:09 PM Tom_L: extended line could also introduce noise
07:09 PM Tom_L: parport drivers are only made to go so far
07:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Rab: printed and folded paper capacitor
07:11 PM Guest3735: I'm surprised it worked with an inverted step-port. Inverted step port I associated with "stepper making noise" or "nothing happens"
07:12 PM unclouded: I had noise that affected stepping under side load (worked fine with no load), caused by the spindle (a hobby trim router). moving the spindle to a separate outlet further from the PC solved the problem
07:13 PM Guest3735: are there any software pull ups?
07:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if you replace all the electronics with relays from the chipset on the problem will become more visually and audibly clear
07:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: step rates will slow down a bit though
07:13 PM unclouded: The first thing I do with my DIR and STEP lines is put them through a opto-isolator so they go from 3.3V to 5V
07:14 PM Rab: CaptHindsight[m], I assumed the sensor needed to be more robust than paper, but that would be cheap all right.
07:14 PM unclouded: my parallel port only produces 3.3V for a 1
07:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: * if you replace all the electronics with relays from the chipset on the mainboard, the problem will become more visually and audibly clear
07:14 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Rab: synthetic paper
07:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: copier paper will also work with a coat of some polymer
07:15 PM Rab: CaptHindsight[m], like Tyvek?
07:15 PM Rab: Tyvek might be hard to print on, but it would be long-lasting. Is this a one-time-use kind of thing?
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: sure if you wanted it to be tough to tear by human hands
07:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: no problem with proper solvent or UV cure
07:16 PM robotustra: https://imgur.com/iio3KPG
07:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Rodent CAM?
07:17 PM robotustra: my cam
07:19 PM robotustra: just did some training of drawing by eyes
07:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: squirrel decoys?
07:20 PM robotustra: yes
07:21 PM robotustra: https://www.woodcraft.com/media/W1siZiIsIjIwMjEvMDYvMzAvMDgvMDcvMTEvNDY5LzEwMl9PdmVuX1NxdWlycmVsLnBkZiJdXQ/102_Oven-Squirrel.pdf?sha=3eb2f06f731fc4bf
07:21 PM robotustra: this one
07:21 PM robotustra: oven squirrel
07:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I usually use one of these https://www.restaurantsupply.com/media/catalog/product/cache/58705eee992a0d7bab305099af29f9ee/c/o/co-303_winco-1_1.jpg
07:24 PM CaptHindsight[m]: since we keep it out on the counters
07:25 PM robotustra: this one is used for oven
07:25 PM robotustra: I just tested my cad if it can handle it
07:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i think mine opens bottles as well
07:28 PM CaptHindsight[m]: oh great now you have me browsing imgur
07:30 PM Tom_L: sucker born every min
07:31 PM Guest3735: In case anyone cares: my problem just went away after manually shuffling around the lines in the machine.hal the relate to the Y axis. without changing ANYTHING. Now I have 4.2V for High. Seems like a parsing error or something like that?
07:33 PM robotustra: looks like imgur is getting worse
07:33 PM Guest3735: It's 2am here so goodnight everybody :) and thanks everybody
07:33 PM CaptHindsight[m]: it varies, some days it is full of great stuff, some days not so much
07:33 PM robotustra: I cant see even my old pics
07:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: lots of police on it now
07:34 PM CaptHindsight[m]: some CoC thing :)
07:40 PM roycroft: whoah
07:40 PM roycroft: the infrastructure bill just passed the senate
07:41 PM XXCoder: wow
07:41 PM XXCoder: how did vbote go
07:41 PM unterhaus: didn't it just pass cloture?
07:41 PM XXCoder: alone lines i guess
07:41 PM roycroft: well, it passed the cloture vote
07:41 PM roycroft: not even close
07:41 PM roycroft: 67-32
07:41 PM roycroft: but cloture is all that's needed
07:41 PM XXCoder: wow thats a strong showing
07:41 PM roycroft: now it only takes 50 votes to pass the final bill
07:42 PM unterhaus: okay, I thought something had happened since before dinner
07:44 PM roycroft: we have bridges that have needed replacement for decades
07:44 PM roycroft: this will will finally get some of that done
07:46 PM * roycroft wonders if the new i5 columbia river bridge will finally be built
07:46 PM roycroft: i moved to eugene in 1994, and the states of washington and oregon had been working on replacing that bridge for years before i moved down here
07:57 PM XXCoder: yeah % of "expired" bridges is scary
07:57 PM roycroft: ron popeil died
07:58 PM XXCoder: who?
07:58 PM roycroft: ron popeil - the kind of infomercials
07:59 PM XXCoder: king?
07:59 PM roycroft: popeil's pocket fisherman, mr. microphone, chop-o-matic
07:59 PM roycroft: but wait - there's more
08:00 PM roycroft: he also peddled hair in a can, the showtime rotissere, and many, many other products
08:00 PM roycroft: king, yes
08:00 PM roycroft: you know i can't type :)
08:00 PM XXCoder: lies
08:01 PM XXCoder: ;)
08:02 PM roycroft: you're probably a bit young to have remembered ron popeil in his heyday
08:02 PM roycroft: he was king in the '70s and '80s
08:02 PM roycroft: dan akroyd did a spoof of his infomercials on snl in the '70s
08:03 PM XXCoder: im child of 80s
08:04 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKllBHvpZcE
08:04 PM roycroft: oh, no cc on that
08:04 PM XXCoder: hah
08:05 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Interesting guy, I met him on the street one day outside of Rock Center, he was unloading a truck for some product he was launching
08:06 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HKTx5WFcs0
08:06 PM roycroft: that one has captions
08:06 PM roycroft: bat-o-matic is funnier than bass-o-matic though
08:06 PM XXCoder: yummy
08:06 PM XXCoder: bass ale
08:07 PM XXCoder: heard snl is awful nowdays
08:07 PM roycroft: bass-o-matic is better known
08:07 PM roycroft: snl is the same as it's always been
08:07 PM roycroft: it's like almost anything nostalgic
08:07 PM roycroft: people remember the good parts of the old times
08:07 PM roycroft: and forget all the lame parts
08:07 PM XXCoder: and awful shit too
08:08 PM roycroft: "music was so much better in the '70s"
08:08 PM roycroft: well, there was a lot of good music in the '70s
08:08 PM roycroft: and a lot of total shite music in the '70s
08:08 PM XXCoder: wouldnt know
08:08 PM roycroft: there's a lot of good music now
08:08 PM roycroft: and a lot of total shite music now
08:08 PM CaptHindsight[m]: and lotsa bad music played way too many times
08:08 PM roycroft: it's no different
08:09 PM roycroft: go watch some full snl shows from the '70s
08:09 PM roycroft: not the best sketches clips
08:09 PM roycroft: but entire shows
08:09 PM roycroft: good stuff, bad stuff, meh stuff
08:09 PM roycroft: just like now
08:09 PM CaptHindsight[m]: can we just leave the eagles, bob seeger, etc etc alone for about 1,000 years
08:10 PM roycroft: i still listen to '70s music
08:10 PM roycroft: but not very often
08:10 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I even get tired of the good stuff from the past
08:11 PM roycroft: i have a good friend who is almost exactly my age
08:11 PM roycroft: all he listens to is '70s music
08:11 PM CaptHindsight[m]: can you listen to Zepplin just 1,000 more times
08:11 PM roycroft: i don't understand how one can listen to the same music for decades on end
08:12 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I've noticed that I go back about 20 years after I stopped listening to something to start again
08:12 PM roycroft: there's an adage that the music you listen to in high school is the music you listen to for the rest of your life
08:13 PM roycroft: and i suppose there is some truth in that, in that high school years are a very formative time for most people
08:13 PM CaptHindsight[m]: cursed are those that went to HS during Disco :)
08:13 PM roycroft: but when i got to high school i was already listening to classical and jazz music that was decades old
08:14 PM roycroft: the disco craze started just as i graduated
08:14 PM roycroft: i was not a fan of it then
08:14 PM roycroft: the funny thing is, though, the country fair opened a new area a few years ago, and added some new stages there
08:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: during Disco I mostly listed to metal and jazz
08:15 PM roycroft: one of them has disco night on thursday night (the night before the fair starts), and i love going over there on disco night
08:15 PM roycroft: there's just so much fun energy there
08:15 PM roycroft: and most of the people who are dancing were born way after the disco craze
08:15 PM roycroft: many of their parents were born after the disco craze
08:15 PM roycroft: it's a lot of fun
08:16 PM roycroft: and it's one night/year
08:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: now i find Disco humorous
08:16 PM roycroft: but i think i enjoy disco on that night better than i ever enjoyed it during its heyday
08:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: like 50's RnR
08:16 PM roycroft: actually, i don't mind disco music, per say, so much
08:16 PM roycroft: it's the polyester leisure suites and the lambchop sideburns and fake afros that were the problem
08:16 PM roycroft: not the music
08:17 PM roycroft: i was listening to fusion music during the disco craze
08:17 PM roycroft: herbie hancock, chick corea (may he rest in peace), mahavishnu orchestra, etc.
08:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: i dress like that now
08:18 PM roycroft: and i was still listening to hippie music like joni mitchell and csn(and sometimes)y
08:18 PM roycroft: and lots of prog rock
08:18 PM roycroft: yes, genesis, pink floyd, etc.
08:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I'm allergic to joni mitchell and csn
08:20 PM roycroft: and the three bands i've probably listened to most consistently over the years, when it comes to popular music - the beatles, the grateful dead, and the band
08:21 PM roycroft: but i have to say that when it comes to listening to music over the years, classical music has been the most consistent for me
08:21 PM roycroft: i go through phases of popular music genres, sometimes lasting months, sometimes decades, but i've always listened to classical music
08:22 PM Tom_L: moody blues were ok
08:23 PM roycroft: i saw them play in eugene a few years ago
08:23 PM roycroft: it kind of sucked
08:23 PM roycroft: they were great
08:23 PM roycroft: but it was an outdoor venue and it was 38 degrees that day
08:23 PM roycroft: so hot that they had to delay the concert for an hour
08:23 PM roycroft: of course, the audience were already there, and we had to hang out in the sun
08:23 PM roycroft: but it was a great show once it finally started
08:24 PM roycroft: the first public radio station i gave money to was wfmt, in the mid '70s
08:24 PM roycroft: before i supported wbez even
08:24 PM roycroft: and i've been a donor to the local classical station ever since then
08:25 PM roycroft: i guess that indicates the steadiness of my listening to that genre
08:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: just getting dark here, bbl
08:26 PM roycroft: although currently i support three local radio stations, and the classical station is not the one i give the most to
08:26 PM * roycroft needs to get dinner going soon
08:54 PM perry_j1987: why is fusion360 telling me axial stock must be greater than radial stock to leave
08:54 PM perry_j1987: ugh
09:03 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "to leave ugh"
09:03 PM perry_j1987: i got it a different way
11:27 PM * flyback wonders how many geeks have a pinup of Rachel Gingell
11:48 PM perry_j1987: cant wait for my pneumatic 5c chuck to arrive
11:51 PM roycroft: i suspect you can
11:51 PM roycroft: but if you suddenly sign off and never return, we'll know that it took too long and you really couldn't wait
11:55 PM perry_j1987: lol
11:55 PM perry_j1987: i gotta order a m39x4 backplate and solinoid valve and all the other goodies
