12:00 AM mrec: another nice feature would be to support touching off the part with the handwheel (with my lathe)
12:49 AM snakedGT is now known as snaked
01:18 AM Deejay: moin
01:49 AM randy: morning
05:56 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:56 AM XXCoder: yoi
07:09 AM mrec: did anyone add a laserpointer to his milling machine?
07:09 AM XXCoder: ?
07:09 AM mrec: I think about doing that for quick semi manual work for drilling holes at particular positions
07:10 AM mrec: it would be easier to center a laser pointer than a drill
07:10 AM JT-Cave: if you can stick one in the spindle it could work, but if you have a DRO on the mill it's a waste of time if you know the locations
07:11 AM mrec: hmm yes and no ... with a laser pointer I could just turn on the machine and go (without homing)
07:11 AM JT-Cave: if the locations are unknown then a laser pointer in the spindle could make it easier to located
07:12 AM mrec: I think it would also be easier to check if a part is correctly aligned
07:15 AM snakedLX is now known as snaked
07:21 AM JT-Cave: locate an odd shaped part?
07:23 AM mrec: https://snipboard.io/85t7ly.jpg
07:24 AM mrec: I have this part here which has to be milled on all sides
07:24 AM mrec: I think the laserpointer could be a real help with that and much quicker than anything else
07:24 AM mrec: the top side needs a slot, the bottom side 2 more holes
07:24 AM XXCoder: i would use locating bolts
07:24 AM XXCoder: since you have 2 spots in least that it can be done
07:24 AM mrec: top and bottom I mean not the flat side
07:25 AM XXCoder: ahh ok
07:25 AM mrec: the flat side I'm using locating bolts already
07:26 AM XXCoder: can you bolt it on fixture on side? that way you can use edge finder on fixture
07:26 AM JT-Cave: that is an odd shaped part for sure
07:26 AM mrec: the laser pointer would eliminate the edge finder
07:26 AM XXCoder: along it is bit harder, unlessyou make notch on fixture when it was being made
07:26 AM mrec: that's an absolute normal part (SMD feeder)
07:26 AM XXCoder: so you can locate but X and Y
07:26 AM JT-Cave: what do you use the edge finder for?
07:26 AM XXCoder: *both
07:26 AM mrec: to get X/Y 0
07:27 AM JT-Cave: Y 0 is the front side of the rear jaw for me and X0 is a dowel in the spindle and slide the part up to the dowel and set X
07:28 AM mrec: that part is a yamaha compatible feeder frame
07:52 AM JT-Cave: finding typos in python code can be so much fun
08:21 AM Tom_L: think outside the jaws JT-Cave :)
08:47 AM perry_j1987: morning
08:55 AM JavaBean: yes, daystar has indeed risen again... thanks for the reminder
09:01 AM jepler[m]: I was trying to remember just how long I have been involved with linuxcnc .. https://emergent.unpythonic.net/01101397944
09:06 AM perry_j1987: its my birthday today and woke up with a headache
09:21 AM JT-Cave: Tom_L, I found it, a 1 should have been 2
09:21 AM JT-Cave: and one was a } where it shouldn't have been
09:30 AM JT-Cave: hi ho hi ho it's off to town I go
09:33 AM perry_j1987: had something odd happen on the lathe lastnight
09:34 AM perry_j1987: was testing some new gcode and ran it and then ran it again and its like it skipped steps and turned everything half a mm in resulting in exactly 1mm smaller part
09:34 AM perry_j1987: the g320 drivers didnt raise an alert to missed steps or anything and not sure how it'd fail "forward" in x if it were missed steps
09:35 AM perry_j1987: thats when i packed it up for the night and figured i'd sleep on it lol
09:35 AM perry_j1987: havnt been able to figure out a scenario that caused that.. do you guys have any 2cents to throw at it?
09:36 AM JT-Shop: no preamble can make code unpredictable
09:37 AM perry_j1987: what do you mean
09:42 AM perry_j1987: it was generated from fusion360 so it should have the preamble
10:50 AM perry_j1987: im going to go over to the shop and see if maybe the coupler is loose on X
10:51 AM perry_j1987: maybe... during a rapid retract it slipped and allowed it to cut in deeper the rest of the cut
10:51 AM perry_j1987: cause it different than the first time i ran that same gcode
10:51 AM perry_j1987: so leading me to think its the coupler slipping maybe
10:56 AM JT-Shop: run the stepper test from the documents on that axis
10:58 AM perry_j1987: what is that
10:58 AM perry_j1987: btw im using servos with g320x step/dir servo drivers
11:03 AM JT-Cave: look in the stepper diagnostics chapter
11:04 AM perry_j1987: ok
11:07 AM perry_j1987: got it pulled up
11:07 AM perry_j1987: going to head over to shop now bbiab
12:11 PM JT-Shop: infinity cutting tools no rush shipping sure is true, placed an order before I left and it's still not shipped
12:18 PM Roguish: JT-Shop, hey, Mr. Documentation. I found a small typo error in one of the linuxcnc docs.
12:18 PM JT-Cave: location
12:19 PM JT-Cave: ?
12:19 PM Roguish: looking
12:19 PM JT-Cave: k
12:24 PM Roguish: of course now i can't find it. and i have to run out for a while. I will find it again. it's some PID docs.
12:29 PM JT-Cave: k
12:30 PM JT-Cave: open a dialog window with me when you find it and let me know where it is
01:25 PM * JT-Shop wonders if infinity used a transporter to put the package that has not shipped yet on my deck?
01:46 PM roycroft: or a time-traveling truck
01:54 PM JT-Shop: I want to make a storage cabinet for under the table saw wing using worm eaten, knotty red oak...
03:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: ping
03:15 PM rs[m]: pong
03:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: roycroft: web host asked me to use ipchicken.com to give them the ip address with the problem
03:17 PM CaptHindsight[m]: I have to remember this for some future fun
03:22 PM andypugh: pcw_home: I have never liked cutting the ends off of CAT5 cables. So: https://photos.app.goo.gl/dKn4jmhL1MBR9cDx8
03:23 PM CaptHindsight[m]: andypugh: I have those on DIN rails
03:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they also make them with breakouts to screw terminals and headers
03:29 PM skunkworks: andypugh: cool! smart serial to rj45?
03:29 PM skunkworks: Does it fit between the rows?
03:39 PM andypugh: Just about, I think,
03:40 PM andypugh: It’s a pity that (as far as I can tell) there is no Phoenix _plug_ to PCB connector.
04:07 PM Tom_L: but who would ever need one but you?
04:17 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:17 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:23 PM Tom_L: andypugh, you mean something like this? https://au.element14.com/metz-connect/ajp92a8813/connector-rj45-plug-1port-8p8c/dp/2442534
04:26 PM Tom_L: smt: https://www.electronicspecifier.com/products/cables-and-connecting/exciting-premiere-rj45-plug-in-smt
04:33 PM andypugh: No.
04:34 PM andypugh: Mesa boards use a 3.5mm pitch Phoenix connector for smart serial. so you cut a CAT5 in the middle and stuff the bare wires in. Like a Victorian,
04:36 PM Tom_L: ahh i see
04:37 PM andypugh: So what I would like is one of these: https://images.app.goo.gl/ZpMgkr7BsAGKBVEN8
04:38 PM andypugh: PCB mountable like: https://images.app.goo.gl/i9YEWWZzphiN1n2X9
04:55 PM rene-dev4 is now known as rene-dev
05:25 PM Rab: andypugh, check it out: https://www.phoenixcontact.com/online/portal/us?uri=pxc-oc-itemdetail:pid=1830757&library=usen&tab=1
05:27 PM Rab: Not sure if it's entirely compatible with the header Mesa uses, and right-angle might be preferable to straight-pin, but evidently it's a thing that exists...further research might turn up some more options.
05:28 PM andypugh: Well found!
05:28 PM andypugh: But they are £4.55 each.
05:28 PM andypugh: I would have used them, had I found them, though.
05:29 PM Rab: Cheap for an authentic Phoenix product!
05:29 PM andypugh: But I have little PCBs on the way from that China.
05:29 PM andypugh: (Also backordered at RS)
05:31 PM andypugh: Eeek! Minimum order 50, in multiples of 50.
05:31 PM Rab: Yeah, all the US distributors only seem to have a tiny handful each, which is weird. Maybe Phoenix sends out a comprehensive sample pack.
05:31 PM andypugh: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/8814359/
05:32 PM Rab: https://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/phoenix-contact/1830757/277-14144-ND/5189143
05:33 PM Rab: (Almost certainly ships from the US)
05:38 PM Tom_L: ask for an engineering sample
05:40 PM Tom_L: mouser has 8 in stock but they're more
05:47 PM roycroft: hello, folks
05:47 PM roycroft: i'm hoping to be able to work on my mill/drill very soon - perhaps even this weekend, if a part for my garage door opener arrives
05:47 PM roycroft: the machine went dead, essentially
05:48 PM roycroft: i finished a milling operation, turned the spindle off, set up for the next operation, and the motor did not come back on
05:48 PM roycroft: the fuse is fine
05:48 PM roycroft: there were not strange noises, and none of the blue smoke escaped from anywhere
05:48 PM roycroft: i think the motor is probably fine, and if it's the controller board, that is very expensive to replace
05:48 PM Tom_L: union strike
05:49 PM roycroft: so i'm thinking that if i determine that's the problem, i might want to go with something completely different, which is why i'm discussing this here
05:49 PM roycroft: the motor is a 3/4hp dc motor, and i'd like to keep that
05:49 PM roycroft: so i'd need a motor controller that would work with that motor, can be manually controlled, and eventually controlled by linuxcnc
05:50 PM roycroft: if anyone has any suggestions i'd appreciate hearing them
05:50 PM Tom_L: the company than makes the controller for sherlines makes bigger ones
05:50 PM roycroft: the other option is to replace the dc motor with a 3 phase ac motor and a vfd
05:50 PM Tom_L: that might be a better option
05:50 PM roycroft: but if the motor is good i don't see ditching it
05:51 PM roycroft: an issue there is that i'd have to machine a motor mount, and my milling machine won't be available
05:51 PM roycroft: but i could make something work if necessary
05:51 PM Tom_L: or print one until you can machine one
05:53 PM roycroft: i've never liked the controller that came with the machine, and i have to move the machine and partially dismantle it to get to the controller board
05:53 PM roycroft: so there are multiple reasons to replace it
05:54 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:54 PM Tom_itx: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/310V-1-2kw-electric-motor-1200w_60737993181.html?spm=a2700.7724857.videoBannerStyleB_top.9.32c7751dTHUvzS
05:55 PM Tom_itx: if i could find that in 110v i'd be tempted to get another
05:56 PM roycroft: that's a dc brushless motor, which i already have
05:56 PM roycroft: so if i could just get the controller that might be perfect
05:56 PM Tom_itx: you can i think
05:56 PM roycroft: assuming it is compatible with my motor
05:57 PM Tom_itx: http://en.lanjiukeji.com/product/754.html
05:58 PM JT-Shop: mcmaster had dc motor controls
05:58 PM JT-Shop: 3/4hp you don't need 3 phase
05:59 PM XXCoder: interesting https://youtu.be/PFKa8K9qZBQ
05:59 PM XXCoder: 1/2 scale foden steam truck
05:59 PM roycroft: a dc motor controller that i could control with my 7i76, and manually with a potentiometer, would be perfect
06:00 PM roycroft: as i said, i think my motor is fine
06:00 PM Tom_L: does peter have any dc controllers?
06:00 PM JT-Shop: what voltage is the motor?
06:00 PM roycroft: i need to get the motor specs
06:00 PM roycroft: i'm not sure
06:00 PM roycroft: grizzly are not forthcoming with that information
06:00 PM JT-Shop: https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/drives_-a-_soft_starters/dc_drives
06:00 PM roycroft: i'll have to pull the motor and figure out what it is
06:01 PM roycroft: and i can actually do that without moving/dismantling the machine, so perhaps that should be my first step
06:01 PM JT-Shop: https://www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/drives_-a-_soft_starters/dc_drives/high_voltage_(%3E_50v)/open_frame_-z-_reversing/gsd4a-240-2c
06:01 PM roycroft: eventually i want linuxcnc to control the spindle motor, and while that can be done with the grizzly controller, it requires a third-party daughter board that costs as much as a vfd
06:03 PM roycroft: it looks like a new controller is likely cheaper than repairing/replacing the existing one
06:03 PM JT-Shop: https://mesaus.com/product/spinx1/ 46
06:03 PM JT-Shop: $26
06:03 PM roycroft: and gives me more flexability
06:04 PM roycroft: and makes it so i would never have to dismantle the machine to service the electronics
06:04 PM JT-Shop: you need to know the voltage of the motor to get the right dive
06:04 PM roycroft: right
06:04 PM JT-Shop: drive even
06:04 PM roycroft: and i won't know that until i pull the motor and figure out what it is
06:05 PM roycroft: actually, there is a place where grizzly might accidently reveal that
06:05 PM JT-Shop: I'm guessing no name plates...
06:06 PM roycroft: i'm fairly certain it will be stamped on the motor itself somewhere
06:06 PM roycroft: but it's a half hour or more of work to get the motor pulled so i can check
06:06 PM roycroft: i'm trying to determine it right now
06:07 PM roycroft: nope
06:07 PM roycroft: well maybe
06:07 PM roycroft: i was just looking on the parts store, and it says "motor 3/4hp 110v 1ph"
06:08 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day and wanders inside
06:08 PM roycroft: which sounds like an ac motor
06:08 PM JT-Shop: indeed
06:08 PM roycroft: but i have read in multiple places that it's a dc motor
06:09 PM roycroft: if it's ac, it would have to be a universal motor to do variable speeds, wouldn't it?
06:09 PM roycroft: being single phase, that is
06:11 PM JT-Shop: hmm, not sure
06:11 PM roycroft: this motor is fairly quiet
06:12 PM JT-Shop: sounds like you need to do some investigating...
06:12 PM roycroft: yes
06:12 PM roycroft: a new pcb for the machine is $200
06:12 PM roycroft: a replacememt motor $215
06:12 PM JT-Shop: chow time here, see you later
06:12 PM roycroft: see you
06:12 PM * roycroft needs to head to market shortly
06:13 PM roycroft: the blackberry brambles are all but gone - i just have a bit to remove right next to the fence and that job is done
06:13 PM roycroft: i have some blackberries on other parts of the property, but just small amounts, as i've been keeping them controlled everywhere else pretty well
06:14 PM roycroft: tomorrow morning i'll get the ones by the fence removed, haul the last load off to recycling, and rejoice
06:47 PM Roguish: roycroft, hey, is Oregon doing any kind of vaccine passport thing?
06:47 PM Roguish: CA has one, but it not required,............................... yet
06:55 PM roycroft: no, we're not
06:56 PM roycroft: at least not right now
06:57 PM Roguish: just curious. I'm thinking about visiting Ashland. couple of friends there. and the Shakespeare plays are on again.
07:07 PM roycroft: i'll be down on the southern coast next month
07:07 PM roycroft: but not near ashland - i'll take 101 down
07:07 PM roycroft: i may make a day trip to arcata while i'm down there
07:08 PM * roycroft hasn't been to the humboldt/mendocino area in 3 years
07:08 PM roycroft: i would not go to ashland in august
07:08 PM Roguish: i've thought about moving up to Ashland for a long time, friends there tell me it's now the pot central of Oregon. they bought up all the small farms and acrage.
07:09 PM roycroft: if the wind shifts to the east the smoke from the bootleg fire could be really bad
07:09 PM roycroft: i've been to ashland a number of times - it's a nice place
07:09 PM Roguish: yeah
07:09 PM roycroft: a little too hot in the summer for me
07:09 PM roycroft: but eugene is getting to be a little too hot in the summer now
07:12 PM roycroft: i've wanted to live on the coast for a long time, but it's expensive, and there aren't any cities big enough to have all the services that i need
07:12 PM roycroft: i'd be heading inland to get materials and hardware and the like all the time
07:12 PM roycroft: with the change in climate, i may be willing to put up with that if i could find somewhere affordable
07:13 PM Roguish: go soon, nothing's getting cheaper.............. until that tsumia hits
07:14 PM roycroft: if you enjoy skiing, ashland would be a good place to live
07:15 PM Roguish: oh boy. I like the skiing there. it's simple. no crowds. definitely my style
07:16 PM Roguish: how's Bend?
07:42 PM Roguish: dinner time. ttfn
07:43 PM * roycroft just got back from market
07:44 PM roycroft: bend is hot and crowded these days
07:44 PM roycroft: oh, he left
07:44 PM roycroft: i guess i'll talk about bend later :)
07:44 PM XXCoder: whooo
07:44 PM XXCoder: https://www.wsj.com/articles/startup-claims-breakthrough-in-long-duration-batteries-11626946330
07:44 PM XXCoder: hope that succeeds
07:44 PM XXCoder: and its dang cheap too
08:08 PM roycroft: paywall
08:09 PM roycroft: but the sneak preview was enough to tell me the name of the company and the technology
08:15 PM XXCoder: yeah thats why i linked to it anyway
08:15 PM XXCoder: it does summary well
08:16 PM XXCoder: i wonder how small they can do it
08:16 PM XXCoder: might be handy home battery also
08:16 PM XXCoder: home battery you dont care how heavy it is
08:17 PM XXCoder: all you need is some out of wat spot and hefy cables
08:42 PM roycroft: so it's 6:30
08:42 PM roycroft: it's not entirely too late for ups to show up, but it's unlikely at this point
08:42 PM XXCoder: aw
08:42 PM roycroft: which means i will probably not have my garage door opener part until next week, and won't be able to open the door until then
08:43 PM roycroft: but i can still pull the motor from my milling machine without moving things outside, and if i do that i can decide what to do about a controller for it
08:44 PM Tom_L: if it wasn't something you wanted it would be here by now
08:45 PM roycroft: exactly
09:10 PM snakedLX is now known as snaked
09:18 PM roycroft: holy moly
09:19 PM roycroft: a level 3 "go" order has just been issued for a bunch of residences near the jack fire
09:19 PM XXCoder: remind me what go levels is
09:19 PM roycroft: level 3 "go" means "drop everything, get in your car, and leave NOW"
09:19 PM roycroft: the wind must have shifted or something
09:19 PM roycroft: usually evacuation orders are not quite that urgent
09:20 PM roycroft: all the local tv stations have had their programming interrupted to broadcast the order
09:20 PM * roycroft was actually flipping from one channel to another when the order was broadcast
09:21 PM djdelorie: everyone push the "get out of Dodge" buttons!
09:22 PM roycroft: temperature is mild, and has been for a couple days - upper 20s
09:22 PM roycroft: we'll be back in the 30s by tomorrow though
09:22 PM roycroft: we're still having dry thunderstorms in the mountains, though
09:23 PM roycroft: and the bootleg fire is creating its own thunderstorms
09:23 PM roycroft: the problem being it's so hot and dry, when it starts raining the rain evaporates before it hits the ground
09:23 PM roycroft: but all the lightning is still happening
