07:37 AM jepler: JT-Cave, KimK, Tom_L, XXCoder, cradek, and seb_kuzminsky should also be able to become channel operators and issue bans as required.
07:38 AM perry_j1987: unban me or else lol

08:43 AM perry_j1987: anybody got some fun projects they are working on today
08:44 AM roycroft: i'm still waiting on the part for my garage door opener, and i can't work on my mill/drill until i get that fixed
08:45 AM roycroft: my projects are all woodshop-related in the meantime
08:46 AM roycroft: i am doing some work on the design of my cnc router today, though, if you count cad work as a project
09:00 AM perry_j1987: aye cad counts for sure
09:00 AM perry_j1987: thats what im doing now
09:00 AM perry_j1987: it pairs nicely with coffee in the mornings
09:08 AM jepler[m]: I'm getting a little better at freecad every week, though it still baffles me sometimes. I don't talk a whole lot about projects because they're mostly 3d printing and not using linuxcnc :-/
09:16 AM roycroft: today is my friday again
09:17 AM roycroft: jepler: i've been going back and forth with freecad for years now
09:18 AM roycroft: i won't go on the full-fledged standard rant again, but the bottom line is that while it's still seriously lacking in many of the features that the commercial parametric cad packages have, most of those missing features are more for efficient workflow than functionality
09:19 AM roycroft: with one notable, and disqualifiying exception, there is no official assembly workbench in freecad, and it's really hard to take it seriously and to use it for real work while that is the case
09:27 AM jepler[m]: I run Linux everywhere so the commercial alternatives are not really on my radar. I have no doubt of the serious short-comings, but luckily I don't have a reference point to compare to :)
09:28 AM roycroft: i use solidwork 2012 (that's what we purchased, and never paid for a support/upgrade license), and want to get away from it
09:29 AM roycroft: i like solidworks a lot, but it only runs on windows, and i use macs for workstations and linux in the racks
09:29 AM roycroft: i don't like having to fire up a virtual machine whenever i need to do 3d cad work
09:30 AM roycroft: and while i enjoy many of the features that solidworks has that are lacking in freecad, i don't need any of them except assemblies, in a stable form that i know will continue to work going forward
09:31 AM * roycroft is close to launching into the rant now, and stops himself before it's too late
09:50 AM sync: the assembly thing in freecad is a pain, yes
09:59 AM roycroft: it is, and it should be easy to solve
10:00 AM roycroft: that's the frustrating thing about it
10:00 AM roycroft: the work has been done, multiple times
10:00 AM roycroft: they just need to pick one and say "this is what we're going to officially integrate into the app", and then it's done, essentially
10:02 AM roycroft: and i am aware that it's not quite that simple
10:03 AM roycroft: but that's the step that needs to be taken, and it would be nice if the developers would start making moves towards taking that step
10:07 AM * flyback bites buzzmarshall
10:07 AM flyback: BMCC
10:14 AM rs[m]: roycroft: I think "realthunder"'s work (LinkStage and topological naming) is currently being integrated which is a requirement for assembly3 workbench. real progress is being made.
10:15 AM rs[m]: https://github.com/realthunder/FreeCAD_assembly3/releases
10:25 AM rs[m]: this https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4PIO2pZaFKzI97uumFTNSg youtube channel has some videos demonstrating the new functionality from realthunders branch/release
10:51 AM roycroft: thanks
11:53 AM Tom_L: jepler[m], does freecad produce decent 3d gcode yet?
11:54 AM Tom_L: i haven't looked at it in a long time
11:59 AM sync: it is ok
12:00 PM roycroft: it looks like folks are using it for 3d printing now
12:03 PM roycroft: it would be nice to have gcode generation integrated into the cad app
12:04 PM jepler[m]: Tom_L: I don't know, my workflow is stl -> slicer and I don't make chips
12:04 PM roycroft: right now i have to do the modeling in solidworks export to .stl, then import into my slicer to generate code for the printer
12:05 PM roycroft: then i have to save the gcode with the slicer upload it to octoprint and print from there
12:06 PM roycroft: if i used freecad i could model and generate gcode within the app itself, save the gcode to my nas and have octoprint access the files directly from the nas
12:12 PM jepler[m]: prusaslicer and ultimaker cura both have pretty okay octoprint integration, so at least I can upload & start printing from the slicer. but removing one more bump going from freecad to slicer would be nice.
12:12 PM jepler[m]: it's fine, the step of exporting stl and opening in prusa is one of the least time-consuming ones
12:13 PM roycroft: yeah, it's not a big deal, but streamling one's workflow is always desirable
12:13 PM Tom_L: i don't have a printer but what is the slicer of choice these days?
12:13 PM roycroft: i use ultimaker cura these days
12:14 PM roycroft: but the correct answer is: the slicer that best integrates with your printer
12:14 PM roycroft: that said, all the common slicers are pretty good with all the common 3d printer firmware distros
12:16 PM Tom_L: is pronterface still a thing now?
12:16 PM roycroft: some of the slicers have printer-specific profiles bundled with them, which makes it easy to add a supported printer, but one can always write a profile for an oddball or otherwise unsupported printer
12:16 PM roycroft: i'm not familiar with pronterface
12:17 PM Tom_L: it was the 'early' go to slicer iirc
12:18 PM Tom_L: looks like they renamed it
12:18 PM Tom_L: https://www.pronterface.com/
12:27 PM CloudEvil: https://youtu.be/heSGqtC0Tz8?t=254 When you need MOAR POWA.
12:27 PM CloudEvil: (Unless I'm confused, this new SpaceX structure has around 20 400 ton rams round the edge.
12:29 PM roycroft: that rocket will never work
12:29 PM roycroft: it is not shaped like a penis
12:30 PM roycroft: jeff bezos has shown us how to build a rocket
12:32 PM mrec: does anyone know about teleop vs joint mode?
12:32 PM mrec: btw the linuxcnc forum is down?
12:33 PM pcw_home: Seems to be
12:33 PM roycroft: it's been down for a day and a half or so, from what i've been told
12:34 PM roycroft: capthindsight was working on a new web host yesterday
12:34 PM mrec: I was reading it just an hour ago
12:34 PM roycroft: oh, so maybe it came back online for a while
12:34 PM mrec: luckily I found what I was looking for, I think I can fix the last issue in the xhc pendant driver
12:34 PM mrec: jogging outside of the designated area before homing.
12:35 PM roycroft: wow, it's oregon day on npr
12:36 PM roycroft: two stories about the bootleg fire, and now a story about cahoots - the mental health crisis center here in eugene that is a model for the "defund" the police movement
03:33 PM XXCoder: jepler[m]: anything happen?
03:34 PM Tom_L: doesn't look like it ehh?
03:34 PM perry_j1987: gah its that time of the day where a couch nap looks real nice
03:34 PM jepler[m]: XXCoder: not yet
03:34 PM XXCoder: tom seems not
03:34 PM jepler[m]: perry_j1987: second that
03:34 PM XXCoder: woke up hours earlier than usual
03:34 PM XXCoder: ugh
03:34 PM XXCoder: its to get another 3d printer
03:35 PM perry_j1987: working on aligning this quick change tool post drill chuck
03:36 PM perry_j1987: my mitutoyo #2417 says its swept in now to get the height adjusted correctly
03:49 PM roycroft: i finished making my kumiko jigs at lunch today
03:49 PM roycroft: just a little final sanding and then some tried and true varnish oil, and they will be ready to go
03:49 PM roycroft: i made a set a couple years ago to use with a chisel or hand plane, but that's kind of slow
03:50 PM roycroft: the new ones work with an indexing plate on my disc sander (which i did not have a couple years ago), and should work about 5-10x faster
04:36 PM CaptHindsight[m]: forums were working just a few hours ago
04:37 PM CaptHindsight[m]: we have sites down and some email for 2.5 days now, with no info from the hosts
04:42 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: FreeCAD/Path is coming along with lots of active development
04:43 PM CaptHindsight[m]: there is even a person that sort of monitors the look and feel of how it works to keep things consistent
04:43 PM Tom_L: that's good news
04:48 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewforum.php?f=15&sid=bc0f8fbf6b6b4513f2bbba059111d345
04:51 PM CaptHindsight[m]: Tom_L: one of the limitations is people with hardware and the build from Git skills to do more testing
05:16 PM roycroft: yay! it's my friday, and i'm done with work!
05:21 PM perry_j1987: having trouble getting this qctp drill chuck aligned
05:25 PM perry_j1987: maybe its time i ditch it and get setup for gang tooling heh
05:44 PM CaptHindsight[m]: forums are back up
06:13 PM roycroft: are you a maintainer of the emc-users mailing-list, capthindsight?
06:33 PM jepler[m]: I'm investigating the problem with the forum. A disk has filled up.
06:33 PM jepler[m]: I deleted some files and restarted the whole system, hopefully the full fs didn't affect the database.
06:41 PM jepler[m]: I'll migrate it to a system with more storage space soon, but I don't know how long the process will take; I'll post a notice in the forum announcements before doing so
06:41 PM jepler[m]: had to reboot again to install a security update (kernel) while I was there
06:42 PM JT-Cave: did the upgrade use more disk space
06:42 PM * JT-Cave finally got home...
06:43 PM jepler[m]: I'm not sure what the problem is. There were a LOT of log files. In fact, log files are 10% of the total. Attachments are >1/3 of the total. I wish there was a way to clean out old attachments.
06:44 PM jepler: but I can upgrade from 30GB to 50GB space for $0/month and that's a no-brainer.
06:48 PM CloudEvil: Fingers crossed.
06:48 PM CloudEvil: tehre are I assume backups?
06:48 PM CloudEvil: (that have been verified). Just thinking of an awesome aviation forum that died this way.
06:55 PM jepler[m]: there are full system snapshots which are verified but only are performed once per week or so (I verified one when doing the test-upgrade of flo), and there are un-tested rsync backups that I have never tried to put back together like a humpty-dumpty
06:55 PM jepler[m]: and additionally there is the snapshot I took just before the major OS upgrade, but I'll delete that in a week
07:01 PM CloudEvil: :)
07:02 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://i.imgur.com/HLd2x7I.jpg after 4 day electrolysis tank soak
07:03 PM CloudEvil: :)
07:04 PM XXCoder: much nicer
07:04 PM CloudEvil: Are you replacing the non camshaft/... bits that rusted?
07:05 PM CloudEvil: hp?
07:06 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +q by jepler
07:07 PM jepler: I've turned back on the "only registered accounts may speak" bit for the moment.
07:08 PM Tom_L: jepler, did your friend contact you anymore?
07:08 PM jepler[m]: no.
07:08 PM Tom_L: good
07:09 PM * JT-Shop is back to the barn
07:09 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], hardly looks like the same block
07:09 PM JT-Shop: everything seems to be in order so time to relax for a bit
07:12 PM perry_j1987: *has craving for grapenuts all of a sudden
07:16 PM jepler: huh my UPS package from NY to NE is delayed .. due to the fires? apparently it's taking a break in PA.
07:18 PM jepler: CaptHindsight[m]: looks like you're being filtered on the irc side due to not being logged in
07:19 PM XXCoder: can make [m] pne registered to same account as no [m] one
07:19 PM jepler: that's correct, though there are some steps to follow. it involves talking to the IRC bridge and issuing some commands to store your login & password
07:20 PM jepler[m]: If this shows on the irc side it works
07:20 PM CaptHindsight: CloudEvil so far it just looks like all new gaskets, seals, rings, pistons and pin bushings
07:20 PM CaptHindsight: haven't pulled apart the lifters yet but i found a new set for $44 shipped
07:20 PM CaptHindsight: will also get new oil pump and timing chain set
07:20 PM CloudEvil: hmm
07:20 PM jepler: if nothing happens I'll turn the moderation back off, but I'd rather act beforehand to reduce the filth since there was a threat with a particular time attached.
07:21 PM CloudEvil: :/
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: CloudEvil: was 225hp at the crank stock, only going up to ~260hp with some updates, daily driver for a girl :)
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: only a 1100Kg car
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: original engine was only a 4cyl 92hp "behemoth"
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: Fedex was a day early from TX to IL
07:21 PM CaptHindsight: from Matrix to here was working 15 minutes ago
07:22 PM jepler: yeah I changed it at 18:53 my time (about 15 minutes ago)
07:23 PM jepler: again sorry for the inconvenience
07:23 PM * flyback bites ve7it
07:23 PM flyback: CANUCK
07:24 PM CaptHindsight: about 6-7 years ago someone on our internal network was chatting with some obnoxious braggart on IRC that claimed to be getting onto users IRC connections
07:24 PM flyback: yeah this laptop might be starting to die
07:24 PM flyback: oh well
07:24 PM jepler: If I knew how I'd exempt people connected via the bridge :-/
07:25 PM CaptHindsight: the next morning our network switch was dead
07:25 PM CaptHindsight: if you pluegged a winders machine into the switch all the port light would blink ON/OFF in sync
07:26 PM CaptHindsight: fun hackster
07:26 PM CaptHindsight: was some cheap netlink or similar unmanaged switch
07:27 PM jepler: remotely bricking an unmanaged switch seems like a good trick
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: I still have it
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: never looked into what they did to it
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: probably found some test/service mode
07:28 PM roycroft: "obnoxious braggart on irc" is redundant
07:28 PM CaptHindsight: some are polite
07:29 PM jepler: apparently in my youth I thought including "I'm one of the smartest people I know" was a good part of an introduction. I don't remember this, but a friend won't let me forget it.
07:35 PM roycroft: i was watching an old west wing episode recently, and josh and toby had a bet, i forget what it was about
07:36 PM roycroft: but toby lost, and as a result, he had to introduce himself by saying "i'm toby ziegler, and i work at the white house" for an entire day
07:36 PM roycroft: it was rather humiliating
08:35 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
09:29 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to -q by jepler
11:59 PM mrec: any xhc-whb04b user here?
