11:39 AM Joe_Hildreth: Any of you versed with PCIe enumeration?
11:46 AM Joe_Hildreth: Been gathering some hardware to experiment with and noticed something odd. (Or may it is normal.) Running the Debian 10, LCNC8.0 release. If I lspci I see the onboard PCIe devices at bus 0 except for the onboard NIC is at bus 2. If I install a PCIe parallel port in the PCIe16 slot and I do a lspci, On board stuff is listed on bus 0, PP on bus 1
11:46 AM Joe_Hildreth: and onboard NIC at bus 2. If I move the card to the PCIe1 slot I get onboard devices on BUS 0, PP card on BUS 2 and the onboard NIC is moved to BUS 3. When this happens the NIC no longer works.
11:48 AM Joe_Hildreth: Perhaps it is normal for the bus numbers to change when adding or removing cards, but shouldn't the NIC continue to work even if it moves to a different bus?
11:50 AM Joe_Hildreth: As an experiment, I reinstalled LCNC with the parallel port card plugged into the PCIe1 slot and everything worked. lspci showed on board devices on BUS 0, PP Card on BUS 2 and On Board NIC on Bus 3. Removing the card resulted in the NIC being moved to BUS 2 and no longer functioning until I replaced the PP card back into the PCIe x1 slot.
01:11 PM rmu: Joe_Hildreth: what is the name of your ethernet interface?
01:14 PM Joe_Hildreth: enp3s0
01:15 PM Joe_Hildreth: or something like that.
01:16 PM rmu: Joe_Hildreth: https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/PredictableNetworkInterfaceNames/
01:18 PM rmu: Joe_Hildreth: the bus id is encoded into the name of the ethernet interface, if you plug in the pp card and cause the bus number to change the name of the ethernet interface changes and is not the one configured in networkmanager, /etc/network/interfaces or whereever it is configured on your system
01:19 PM Joe_Hildreth: rmu: Ahh, I think I noticed that Friday when I was playing with it.
01:22 PM rmu: you can either configure systemd to name it differently, maybe adding "net.ifnames=1 biosdevname=0" to linux cmdline also helps, see https://askubuntu.com/questions/679117/predict-network-interfaces-names-in-wily-xenial/679141#679141 or https://askubuntu.com/questions/704361/why-is-my-network-interface-named-enp0s25-instead-of-eth0
01:24 PM Joe_Hildreth: rmu: Thank you. I will read these links. That explains my problem very well.

02:37 PM Joe_Hildreth: JT-Mobile: What are you testing? :-)
02:39 PM JT-Shop: testing that I have hexchat configured correctly on my laptop before we leave tomorrow
02:39 PM Joe_Hildreth: Gotcha
02:46 PM Tom_L: lotsa lumber there
03:03 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
03:03 PM JT-Mobile: test from windblows hexchat
03:03 PM Tom_L: where you headin off to this time?
03:03 PM JT-Shop: gatlinburg
03:04 PM JT-Shop: and I don't have to drive!
03:04 PM Tom_L: don't piss off the driver!
03:04 PM JT-Shop: there's even more firewood from that lumber
03:05 PM Tom_L: goin to the park too?
03:17 PM Joe_Hildreth: If you like driving Gatlinburg you should check out Tellico Plains, Bald River Falls, Cherokee National Forrest and the Cherohala Skyway. Beautiful country there!
03:26 PM JT-Shop: we are staying 20 miles east of gatlinburg and one day we are driving across to cherokee then down 19 to 129 then across the mountains on the cherohala then back to gatlinburg

05:21 PM _unreal_: well that was fun ISH
06:09 PM XXCoder: roycroft: https://youtu.be/STZwmbVViw0 pretty awesome
07:39 PM skunkworks: why wouldn't you use atleast a wider bit for flattening.. even a router bit..
07:45 PM Tom_L: because that would make more sense?
07:47 PM XXCoder: dont know either
07:47 PM Tom_L: also, why is he welding on the back of the finished piece ?
07:48 PM XXCoder: adhoc build and planninmg
08:16 PM roycroft: and because welding is fun, mmmkay?
08:30 PM Tom_L: gives it that 'distressed' look?
08:35 PM roycroft: it makes it look artisan
08:35 PM roycroft: or bespoke
08:36 PM roycroft: that's the hot word these days
08:38 PM roycroft: i guess the difference is that "artisan" means "i made this myeslf and it turned out a little funky", and "bespoke" means "i customer ordered this from someone else and it turned out a little funky"
08:38 PM roycroft: custom ordered
08:40 PM Tom_L: unique
08:45 PM roycroft: up until a few years ago, "bespoke" was a strictly british term meaning "custom tailored clothing"
08:46 PM roycroft: now it's used throughout the english speaking world for anything custom
09:07 PM roycroft: the bootleg fire is still growing at a rate of 1000 acres/hour, but it is 22% contained now
09:08 PM roycroft: 67 residences and 117 other buildings destroyed now
09:08 PM XXCoder: :(
09:11 PM roycroft: i just hope there is no smoke at the southern oregon coast when i go down there next month
09:12 PM roycroft: the last time i went on a camping trip there i had to go home early because the smoke was so thick
09:12 PM roycroft: so far things look good there, but i'm not leaving for another three weeks
09:26 PM XXCoder: siigh https://youtu.be/ZUB1SSdwS08
09:27 PM XXCoder: fairly unsafe way to use powdercoating
09:27 PM XXCoder: hes just spraying it openly in shop. hes wearing a mask, but powder dont magically go away
09:33 PM hazzy[m]: Heh, I don't even wear a mask powder coating. It's pretty inert. Just blow a fan
09:33 PM XXCoder: even if inert, getting it in lungs isnt healthy
09:33 PM XXCoder: i'd add a box fan with filter as minium
09:33 PM XXCoder: bigger fan with 2 inch fiber filter is better
09:41 PM roycroft: i went there and got a peter defazio ad, for like the 197th time today
09:41 PM XXCoder: fun
09:42 PM roycroft: and those ads cannot be skipped, so i just closed the window
09:42 PM XXCoder: yeah i dont know why chrome dont have same youtube extender plugin as firefox has
09:43 PM roycroft: these ads are sponsored by the league of conservation voters
09:43 PM XXCoder: https://www.mrfdev.com/enhancer-for-youtube
09:43 PM roycroft: i've written them telling them they're hurting their own cause, because those ads are making me not want to vote for defazio
09:43 PM XXCoder: it exists for chrome
09:43 PM XXCoder: edge and opera too, if youprefer those
09:43 PM roycroft: for whome i have voted every time since i moved to oregon
09:44 PM roycroft: i use safari, and use ad blocker, but youtube are pretty good at keeping ahead of adblocker
09:47 PM XXCoder: maybe try tampermonkey, and https://raw.githubusercontent.com/YePpHa/YouTubeCenter/master/dist/YouTubeCenter.user.js
09:47 PM XXCoder: its youtube centee
09:49 PM XXCoder: link is 5 years old, lemme see if theres newrr
09:50 PM XXCoder: yeah cant find anything newer
09:52 PM XXCoder: id suggest change browsers, safari is simply not used by enough people for people to care enough to make plugins for it
09:53 PM roycroft: i hate firefox, and i avoid anything having to do with google, so there aren't a lot of other options
09:53 PM XXCoder: opera?
09:53 PM roycroft: i actually like safari a lot, except the ad blockers have not worked well for a while
09:54 PM roycroft: i don't think opera runs on macos any more
09:54 PM XXCoder: maybe can use firefox just for youtube
09:54 PM roycroft: i'm not sure about that, but i wasn't too impressed with it when i tried it
09:54 PM roycroft: that was about 20 years ago though
09:54 PM XXCoder: 20 years is like 1000 tech years aho
09:55 PM roycroft: my password manager doesn't have an opera plugin anyway
