12:01 AM burklefoo: I would guess rats would eat mice
01:11 AM Deejay: moin
02:40 AM Loetmichel: *giggle* maaan i delve down the rabbit hole way to often... coworker just brought me a drill bit he resharpened. And was dejected when i said that he can throw that away because the tip was blue. Which triggered my "explain bear" about steel colours when heating, hardening and ended with how peacocks and butterflies produce colour withput pigment. :)
02:40 AM XXCoder: fancy
02:40 AM XXCoder: you better?
02:42 AM Loetmichel: you mean the shivering?
02:42 AM XXCoder: yeah
02:42 AM Loetmichel: was already better yesterday after lunch break. seemed to be only low sugar.
02:43 AM XXCoder: thats good. you probably want to start having breakfast. if it sounds like huge hassle i'd get a whole meal drink, for say 3 usd each thats great
02:44 AM Loetmichel: i usually dont
02:44 AM Loetmichel: and often even forego lunch if there is much stress
02:44 AM XXCoder: yeah i used to skip breatfast all time, but i cant now if i do more work than being idle at pc
03:00 AM Loetmichel: I can, but especially if i also skipped lunch at work it has consequences. I buy WAY to much food on the commute home :)
03:00 AM XXCoder: :)
03:24 AM mrec_: is there any g-code available for cutting a slot X length + stepdown? (Milling)
03:25 AM mrec_: for sure I can put G1 x... into a loop
03:30 AM Loetmichel: you may want to look into canned cycles
03:32 AM Loetmichel: hmm... seems there is none for a slot
03:32 AM Loetmichel: sorry.
03:32 AM Loetmichel: i was sure there was one. must have been my imagination
03:33 AM mrec_: G7x on a lathe
04:09 AM Tom_L: morning
04:10 AM XXCoder: Loetmichel: can always use function and function call
04:10 AM XXCoder: just set z bit lower each call till depth reached
04:16 AM mrec_: it's no problem I did it already
04:16 AM XXCoder: nice whats you use
04:16 AM XXCoder: g99 and g98>
04:16 AM XXCoder: ?
04:27 AM mrec_: G1 & co in a loop
04:36 AM XXCoder: cool :)
05:10 AM JT-Cave-: morning
05:10 AM JT-Cave- is now known as JT-Cave
05:10 AM TurBoss:
good morning
05:35 AM Deejay: good noon :)
05:45 AM XXCoder: heys
07:35 AM Tom_L: sunny & 90F today
07:36 AM XXCoder: quite warm
07:36 AM XXCoder: hey
10:14 AM JT-Shop: I have a dragon wind vane and it's made by Whitehall Products Ltd but I'm missing the direction part
10:27 AM roycroft: we have several large fires, and conditions are like late august, not early july
10:27 AM roycroft: our state fire marshall thinks this could be one of our worst fire seasons ever
10:31 AM roycroft: there are some huge fires up in norcal - much larger than ours
10:31 AM roycroft: kind of in jymmmm's neck of the woods
10:33 AM roycroft: there are two small fires right on the coast by crescent city
10:33 AM roycroft: that area is cool and foggy year-round
12:07 PM Tom_L: roycroft, started by natural or human events?
12:15 PM roycroft: that's not indicated on the fire maps
12:15 PM roycroft: and i haven't heard anything
12:16 PM roycroft: there's a lot talk in canada about the lytton fire, though
12:16 PM roycroft: that's the town in british columbia that reached the higest temperature ever recorded in canda (49.7 degrees) last week
12:16 PM roycroft: the whole town burned down the next day, and officials are now blaming the railroad
12:17 PM roycroft: and canada has the same kind of wonky regulatory system as we do when it comes to railroads
12:18 PM roycroft: in essence, the investigation of the fire wil be conducted by the railroad itself, with oversight from a regulatory board made up of railroad execs
12:18 PM roycroft: the rcmp are not allowed to investigate, nor are local officials
12:21 PM roycroft: that temperature, btw, is also the highest temperature ever recorded north of 45 degrees north, and higher than the highest temperature ever recorded anywhere in europe or south america
12:21 PM roycroft: and, presumably, antarctica
12:42 PM * JT-Shop takes one last look before heading to McCoys
12:45 PM roycroft: my august vacation time was just approved, and taking the next five fridays off for vacation was just approved
12:45 PM roycroft: so yay
12:52 PM roycroft: oh lord
12:52 PM roycroft: fox are starting a weather channel
12:52 PM roycroft: now we'll get fake weather along with our fake news
01:11 PM CloudEvil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKKj35xhkNE related
01:11 PM CloudEvil: Weather Channel Accused of Pro-Weather Bias
01:14 PM roycroft: i can see it now
01:15 PM roycroft: fox weather viewers arguing that it's snowing in their town, and weather channel viewers arguing that it's warm and sunny in their same town
02:14 PM CaptHindsight[m]: OTOH, it gives them something harmless to occupy themselves with
02:15 PM norias: CaptHindsight[m]: what does the '[m]' mean?
02:15 PM CaptHindsight[m]: is it at the end of my Nick?
02:16 PM norias: yeah
02:16 PM CaptHindsight[m]: something the bot does when you are on the bridge from Matrix to IRC Libera
02:18 PM norias: ah
02:18 PM norias: how's your 5 axis project coming along?
02:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: they are all moving along
02:25 PM CaptHindsight[m]: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/42008-ros-linuxcnc-link?start=120#212920 looks interesting
02:26 PM perry_j1987: i have been working on my first fixture design
02:26 PM perry_j1987: im trying to make one that can be for multiple parts and multiple ops heh
02:27 PM perry_j1987: so i wont have to keep finding 0,0 for multiple fixtures
02:28 PM Tom_L: toumbstone?
02:28 PM perry_j1987: eventually thinking of doing that
02:28 PM Tom_L: i did one on a plate the other day to run 2 different parts
02:28 PM perry_j1987: im designing it so it will fit on my 4th axis later on
02:28 PM perry_j1987: but it will also fit in my 3in machine vise too
02:29 PM perry_j1987: i would really like probing ability on this 6040
02:29 PM perry_j1987: for finding 0,0 etc
02:30 PM JT-Shop: for me the back side of the fixture is always Y0 and the front of the rear jaw is Y0 and a dowel in the spindle sets X-0.250"
02:30 PM perry_j1987: thinking of taking some smooth rod scrap that i got laying around, throwing it in the lathe and making something that resembles a metal shaft with plastic isolator and more metal shaft
02:30 PM JT-Shop: simple, fast and easy
02:31 PM Tom_L: yeah, i do similar but with a wobbler
02:31 PM perry_j1987: then i can use it like a touch plate but mounted in the spindle instead
02:31 PM perry_j1987: i have a wobbler too
02:31 PM perry_j1987: suppose i could just use that
02:32 PM Tom_L: takes about 5 min to set X0 Y0 and Z0 with all the tool length offsets
02:33 PM perry_j1987: not sure i have enough z to use the wobbler on something in the machin vise though
02:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A9_New/A9-A10_fixture2.jpg
02:34 PM Tom_L: right rear corner of the plate is zero
02:34 PM Tom_L: i can run half dozen different parts off that just by moving the material dowel pins that are all pre'drilled
02:39 PM Tom_L: and alot of the tools are the same so i don't have to reset them either
02:39 PM perry_j1987: i might have my terminology wrong
02:39 PM perry_j1987: what you got there is a fixture plate right?
02:39 PM Tom_L: yeah, just a sacrificial plate
02:39 PM perry_j1987: im designing something that holds specific parts
02:40 PM perry_j1987: is what im making a pallet?
02:40 PM Tom_L: toumbstone?
02:40 PM veroski: good morning, i have bought mesa card 7i97, 7i74, 7i70 and 7i84 now i have load the bit file 7i97_D.bit (i want use only 7i97 card for now). But, if i want firmware i must load? (i think 7i97_7i74D.bit)
02:41 PM Tom_L: veroski, likely so yes
02:41 PM veroski: if i want use 7i74 whit 7i70 and 7i84 what firmware i i must load?**
02:41 PM Tom_L: depends what configuration you're after
02:41 PM Tom_L: you'd have to ask JT or pcw
02:42 PM Tom_L: is 7i84 a sserial card?
02:42 PM Tom_L: i forget
02:42 PM veroski: can i ask it privately?
02:42 PM Tom_L: i'd just ask here
02:42 PM veroski: no it's eth card
02:42 PM Tom_L: which you just did
02:43 PM veroski: 7i70 too
02:43 PM Tom_L: may take a bit for a reply but it usually comes
02:43 PM veroski: ok i have other question..
02:44 PM veroski: there is 7i97_fallback.bit file too, but what is the difference between 7i97_D.bit and it?
02:45 PM Tom_L: any fallback bit file is if you lock up the main one you can recover the board
02:45 PM Tom_L: don't mess with it
02:47 PM veroski: ok, so i i load it the card return to the original state
02:47 PM veroski: if*
02:47 PM Tom_L: if you were to make a custom bit file for a special combination and it didn't work you could use the fallback which is already loaded to recover
02:48 PM veroski: very good. thank you Tom_L
02:48 PM Tom_L: there again, peter can give you a better explanatino
02:49 PM veroski: ok ok c:

02:59 PM Tom_L: perry_j1987, there are any number of different style tooling plates
02:59 PM perry_j1987: i'd like to make one for my setup some time
03:11 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:34 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/chickens/feeder/feedermk4/feeder-mk4-01.jpg
04:35 PM Tom_L: are those chickens royalty?
04:35 PM JT-Shop: aye
04:35 PM Tom_L: and where does bambi fall?
04:35 PM JT-Shop: pet
04:36 PM Tom_L: i think that's pretty cool in itself
04:36 PM JT-Shop: so does thumper and all the thumpettes
04:36 PM Tom_L: you've got more than one?
04:36 PM JT-Shop: yeah Bambi will come toward me when I call her
04:36 PM JT-Shop: 4 wild rabbits
04:36 PM XXCoder: i think jt buys chickens just so he has more stuff to do, tom ;)
04:37 PM * JT-Shop sent two away yesterday for being bad and they are very sorry now I think
04:41 PM XXCoder: lol https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/343070336084082708/862806685847257098/210644938_1903793766481682_1155941180637376217_n.png
04:51 PM JT-Shop: calling the ups tracking number is a total waste of time
05:07 PM roycroft: all tracking systems everywhere are now a waste of time
05:08 PM roycroft: i think all the shippers saw how useless dhl tracking was an decided to see if they could outuseless dhl
05:08 PM roycroft: usps are now openly stating that they don't bother scanning most parcels until final delivery now
05:09 PM * roycroft thinks his tried and true varnish oil is about warm enough to apply now
05:09 PM JT-Shop: ups usually works for me but the person at ups failed to put the commercial invoice with the package and that caused all kinds of snafu's
05:09 PM JT-Shop: where is usps saying that?
05:10 PM roycroft: the last dozen or shipments i've received from ups show that the item was received, but no updates until delivery
05:10 PM roycroft: i don't rememember, sorry
05:10 PM JT-Shop: ups or usps?
05:10 PM roycroft: i had an issue with a vendor and they said they really did ship, and pointed me to a usps url that said they weren't scanning things until finaly delivery now
05:11 PM roycroft: and that's been my experience with other shipments
05:11 PM roycroft: i have three parcels en route that show "shipping label created" on the usps tracking page
05:11 PM roycroft: they will all show that status until they are delivered
05:12 PM JT-Shop: I think that depends on the location, all my outgoing packages get two scans here
05:12 PM roycroft: my parcels that are en route are from maine, arizona, and utah
05:12 PM roycroft: all three show "shipping label created", and have so for serveral days
05:12 PM roycroft: that's the other thing
05:12 PM JT-Shop: https://www.uspsoig.gov/document/management-alert-%E2%80%93-nationwide-delivery-scanning-issues
05:12 PM roycroft: 3 day priority mail is taking a week or more now
05:13 PM roycroft: that's not the url i was pointed to a couple days ago
05:13 PM roycroft: and yay!
05:13 PM roycroft: it's the weekend!
05:14 PM * roycroft is taking the next five fridays off
05:14 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:14 PM * JT-Shop is taking the next few weeks off...
05:14 PM roycroft: i'm trying to catch up on vacation
05:14 PM roycroft: as soon as i finish taking the five fridays off i'm on vacation for a week
05:14 PM roycroft: and i have camping reservations
05:15 PM roycroft: so i'll be heading to the coast for the first time in almost 2 years
05:15 PM JT-Shop: nice
05:15 PM roycroft: it should be
05:15 PM roycroft: the weather is almost always nice that time of year
05:16 PM roycroft: and i'm going during the peak of the perseid meteor shower
05:16 PM roycroft: to one of the darkest places in the continental united states
05:17 PM roycroft: it's almost impossible to book a camping site this year, but that particular state park is so remote hardly anyone goes there
05:19 PM JT-Shop: the motorcycle mamma's wanted to see dixie stampede and didn't check to see if any cabins were available in wears valley but they finally found a condo east of gatlinburg
05:20 PM JT-Shop: I'm not sure how I get to have so much fun on short notice... visit pigeon forge during the middle of july
05:21 PM JT-Shop: at least I don't have to drive :)
05:30 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/wood-working/workbench-mk1/
05:38 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:44 PM Tom_L: didn't take long for you to fill that bldg up
05:46 PM roycroft: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvgN5gCuLac
05:46 PM JT-Shop: it's a challenge to keep open some working space but I keep working at cleaning crap out
05:50 PM JT-Shop: my shipment of mesa cards to canada went to chicago then miami and I thought for sure it's going to the islands maybe cuba dunno but it was delivered today in canada
05:50 PM Tom_L: heh
05:51 PM Tom_L: i think they just hired extra workers now they need to give em something to do
05:51 PM Tom_L: so they just let em run around in circles
05:51 PM JT-Shop: lol
05:52 PM JT-Shop: hiring workers is a challenge when no one wants to work
05:52 PM Tom_L: that _is_ becoming a serious problem across the board
05:52 PM JT-Shop: so I only have 3 shipments not delivered
05:53 PM Tom_L: none have been as big a pain as your friend from Australia have they?
05:54 PM JT-Shop: no she is the only ahole
05:54 PM JT-Shop: well one was a bit of a pain but didn't file a claim and his package has been in AU for a week or more now
05:55 PM Tom_L: sitting in customs?
05:55 PM JT-Shop: he kept demanding I do something to get his cards to him lol
05:55 PM JT-Shop: no seems to have passed that up been to three cities in au so far
05:56 PM Tom_L: they hired extra workers too :)
05:56 PM JT-Shop: one guy in nz said no worries he has not built the machine yet!
05:56 PM Tom_L: might not mind meeting him
05:57 PM JT-Shop: seems to be an ok chap
05:57 PM Tom_L: got my onlinecarbide cutters today
05:57 PM JT-Shop: how do they look?
05:58 PM Tom_L: they look good, the helix isn't as great
05:58 PM Tom_L: but more than a standard cutter
05:58 PM Tom_L: quite a bit cheaper
05:58 PM JT-Shop: cool
05:59 PM Tom_L: i'll try em out one of these days
05:59 PM Tom_L: i just wanted to see
05:59 PM Tom_L: i was happy with their single point cutters
06:01 PM JT-Shop: the only thing I missed today was a sack of cans...
06:01 PM JT-Shop: tomorrow the steel scrap run
06:19 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Lakeshore_vs_Online1.jpg
06:19 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/Lakeshore_vs_Online2.jpg
06:26 PM roycroft: and my parcel from arizona was just delivered to dillard, oregon, 2 hours south of here
06:26 PM roycroft: or so say the usps
06:26 PM roycroft: not arrived at the post office there (and dillard is a tiny town with a postage-stamp size post office)
06:27 PM roycroft: but delivered to the recipient, who is obviously not me
06:30 PM Tom_L: it's in your state so stop complaning! gee whiz
06:30 PM Tom_L: mine arrived a day early
06:31 PM Tom_L: go figure
06:31 PM roycroft: actually dillard is in north jefferson, and i'm in south cascadia
06:32 PM XXCoder: been trying to contact my last job HR lol
06:32 PM XXCoder: they want me to talk, hopefully a rehire
06:32 PM Tom_L: hope that works out
06:32 PM XXCoder: yeah
06:33 PM roycroft: yes, that would be great
06:33 PM XXCoder: though im still very dizzy so im not sure how it will work out.
06:33 PM XXCoder: maybe i can run a small cnc machine
06:34 PM roycroft: pfeizer just announced reduced efficacy of its vaccine over time
06:34 PM XXCoder: s it same for modernia?
06:34 PM XXCoder: i was planning booster shot with pfeizer in few more months
06:35 PM roycroft: time + the delta strain shows a reduction from 94% to about 64% after six months
06:35 PM roycroft: moderna have not said anything - theirs is a completely different vaccine
06:35 PM XXCoder: thats still not too bad. isnt flunat 50%
06:35 PM XXCoder: -n
06:36 PM roycroft: pfeizer say that a third booster produces 5-10x as many antibodies as 2 doses, but they've developed a new vaccine that's more effective against the delta and other new strains
06:36 PM XXCoder: nice
06:36 PM roycroft: they hope to get emergency fcc authorization for the new version in august
06:36 PM roycroft: which will be about 5 months after i got mine
06:36 PM Tom_L: fda?
06:36 PM roycroft: er, yes, fda
06:36 PM roycroft: sorry
06:37 PM roycroft: i was reading an article about a news channel a while ago, i must have gotten the fcc stuck in my head :)
06:37 PM roycroft: if it takes a booster every six months i'd be ok with that
06:37 PM Tom_L: hope they don't skip too many protocols in the process
06:37 PM roycroft: and we were told up front that boosters may have to happen
06:38 PM Tom_L: so the battery dies in the tracker after 6mo? ;)
06:38 PM Tom_L: tell your boss that
06:38 PM roycroft: the difference between full authorization and emergency authorization is that for full authorization studies have to be done on the interaction of the vaccine and other vaccines
06:38 PM roycroft: which takes a long time
06:39 PM roycroft: emergency authorization requires all the other studies except that
06:39 PM roycroft: so with emergency authorization you can only get one vaccine at a time, instead of a vaccine soup like the standard childhood ones generally are
06:40 PM roycroft: it's best i not talk about this with my boss
06:40 PM roycroft: i only do when he brings itup
06:40 PM Tom_L: get your vacation in first
06:40 PM roycroft: it's kind of like my interactions with a certain member of this channel - i bite my tongue as much as possible, but when things get too outrageous i feel compelled to respond
06:41 PM Tom_L: it's just fuel
06:41 PM roycroft: since i no longer work in the office i don't have to have these conversations often
06:41 PM roycroft: and i'm not going to start working in the office again
06:41 PM roycroft: i can't - my office has been repurposed
06:41 PM roycroft: so i don't have anywhere to work down there
06:42 PM XXCoder: restroom ;)
06:42 PM roycroft: i decided to use tried and true varnish oil on my drawer pulls, since i was using it on the drawer fronts anyway
06:42 PM roycroft: and boy, did they ever pop when i applied the oil
06:42 PM roycroft: they're going to turn out great
06:42 PM Tom_L: nice
06:42 PM roycroft: yeah, i am very pleased
06:42 PM Tom_L: hope you recoup all your time
06:43 PM roycroft: although that little project convinced me that i have to find a way to get a cnc router soon
06:43 PM roycroft: some day i shall
06:43 PM XXCoder: roy of what size?
06:43 PM XXCoder: some sizes is really easy to get
06:44 PM roycroft: fortunately my workshop is not my primary source of revenue at this point, so i can at least somewhat afford to spend excessive time on projects like that
06:44 PM roycroft: as i was saying the other day, 2'x4' build size would work well
06:45 PM roycroft: and would probably fit in that 34"x60" footprint
06:45 PM Tom_L: my only regret is not having more Z
06:45 PM XXCoder: did you check over plans i sent you?
06:45 PM roycroft: a little bit, but i haven't had much time yet
06:45 PM XXCoder: you'd need to change couple things since MGN is so cheap compared to 2014
06:45 PM roycroft: they went in a folder and i glanced at them
06:46 PM roycroft: most of the other diy cnc router stuff i've found online is several years old
06:46 PM XXCoder: i saw recent one a second
06:46 PM roycroft: i really need to get my mill/drill working again
06:47 PM roycroft: and i'm going to start on that tomorrow - that's one of the reasons i wanted more vacation days this month
06:47 PM Roguish: holy crap. yesterday we topped at 75, today, right now it's 99......
06:47 PM XXCoder: roycroft: https://youtu.be/O2LlD0qsXwY
06:47 PM XXCoder: made in 2021
06:47 PM roycroft: it's going to be at least sunday before i can install the drawer fronts and drawer pulls on my sander cabinet, because the varnish oil takes a while to cure, and i need to apply another coat
06:48 PM roycroft: so i'll work on other stuff in the meantime
06:48 PM Tom_L: Roguish, you got your spindle working good now?
06:48 PM XXCoder: its not overly detailed, but uou can get idea of design
06:49 PM roycroft: i just have to read and think a bit about the design of what i want to build
06:49 PM roycroft: i know exactly what to do with the mill/drill, but that's a cnc conversion, not a machine build from scratch like the router will be
06:49 PM XXCoder: that video only thing meh is SBR locations
06:49 PM XXCoder: its not covered
06:49 PM Roguish: Tom_L, pretty much. with PID also. still some tweaking. used lincurve to correct some non-linearities.
06:49 PM * Tom_L gives Roguish a block of ice to sit on
06:49 PM Roguish: thanks
06:49 PM XXCoder: so i guess you would want to add brushes to keep chips out of SBR bearings
08:07 PM roycroft: i'm thinking about visiting the japanese bomb sites when i'm on my camping trip - they're fairly close (about an hour away from where i'll be), and i've never been to them
08:13 PM roycroft: or maybe not
08:14 PM roycroft: the road to the trailhead requires a vehicle with high clearance
08:14 PM roycroft: and my prius certainly does not fit that bill
08:15 PM roycroft: i could drive my van down there instead of the prius, but it would probably be cheaper to rent 4x4 locally than pay for the extra fuel to drive the van
08:41 PM perry_j1987: hows it going
09:13 PM perry_j1987: think i just about got the cam done for my first fixture
09:15 PM Tom_L: got pics?
10:25 PM perry_j1987: none yet
10:25 PM perry_j1987: i got a buddy who's coming over tomorrow he wants me to try an amana 0 flute cutter for this

11:00 PM roycroft: best to avoid jamming pieces of wood into your body in the first place
11:01 PM roycroft: at least that's the approach that's always worked best for me
11:01 PM XXCoder: expecially important when one is vampire
11:02 PM roycroft: about that i cannot speak from personal experience, but conceptually it seems like a good idea
11:08 PM roycroft: so do i have a warped perception when it comes to the size of a cnc router?
11:08 PM roycroft: i'm thinking 2'x4' is smallish, and 4'x8' or 5'x10' more standard sizes
11:09 PM roycroft: but it seems a lot of the online diy folks think that 2'x4' is pretty large
11:09 PM XXCoder: most of sold for home routers is pretty bit smaller
11:09 PM XXCoder: 300mm at most
11:09 PM XXCoder: maybe 400mm
11:09 PM roycroft: what do folks make with those?
11:10 PM XXCoder: signs, parts
11:10 PM XXCoder: my orginial plan was to use smaller one to make 5'x10' one
11:20 PM roycroft: it looks like the days of cheap 80/20 extrusions on ebay are gone
11:31 PM XXCoder: aw
