12:20 AM mrec: today time to add a motor to the tailstock .. I don't like handwheels
12:26 AM mrec: it would be nice to attach drills to the crossslide of the lathe however there's not enough space it would need a replacement of the entire crossslide :-(
01:09 AM Deejay: moin
01:13 AM randy: morning
04:32 AM Tom_L: morning
04:32 AM XXCoder: yo
04:33 AM XXCoder: if you want to keep your nick at freenode, you would need to re-register i guess
04:33 AM Tom_L: don't plan to return there
04:34 AM XXCoder: yeah me either. bonus that i dont need to drop nick there now
04:34 AM XXCoder: i lost password to my account there when i changed mine here lol
05:05 AM Vq: I was considering whether or not to unregister a channel I had there that was now empty.
05:06 AM XXCoder: yeah
05:06 AM Vq: I guess I should be thankful.
05:06 AM XXCoder: me too. i dont need to drop nick now lol
05:07 AM Vq: "new freenode will be the biggest IRC network known to mankind" -- rasengan 2021-06-15
05:07 AM XXCoder: i wonder how long before they create millions of bots to make his "millions" come true
05:07 AM Vq: https://netsplit.de/networks/top10.php
05:13 AM XXCoder: yuo
05:14 AM XXCoder: yup*
05:56 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:56 AM XXCoder: hey
06:01 AM cloudevil is now known as CloudEvil
07:49 AM Tom_L: sunny Hi 98F
07:58 AM JT-Shop: whew that's hot
08:13 AM Tom_L: yep, just watered the newly planted grass a bit
08:26 AM Jym: Tom_L: planted (seed) or sod ?
08:28 AM Tom_L: seed
08:28 AM Jym: Ah
08:28 AM Tom_L: but it's up already
08:29 AM Jym: https://imgur.com/izRr0Q2
08:29 AM _methods: jym on fire
08:29 AM Jym: _methods: a wee bit
08:36 AM Tom_L: ready for the summer fires?
08:36 AM * _methods shoots a bottle rocket at Jym
08:48 AM JT-Cave: isn't is bit late in the season to plant grass seed?
09:38 AM roycroft: the rain is gone here, and we're in for a heat wave over the next week as well, but not like jymmm will be experiencing
09:38 AM roycroft: it's definitely fire season though
10:04 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, it's been in a couple weeks at least
10:04 AM Tom_L: and yes i got a late start
10:04 AM Tom_L: just didn't want the seed to wash away with all the early rain we had
10:44 AM JT-Shop: speaking of rain, I need to setup my sprinklers
10:47 AM roycroft: as of today, oregon's vaccination rate is 68%
10:47 AM roycroft: when we hit 70% the state will fully reopen
10:48 AM norias: roycroft: oh good news. 5 more people to go!
10:48 AM roycroft: it looks like that will probably happen before the olympic trials - i wonder how that's going to work out
10:49 AM roycroft: hayward field is sold out now, but it's only allowed 50% of capacity
10:49 AM roycroft: when we hit 70% statewide, there will be no more capacity limits, so there may be a heap of tickets going on sale at the last minute
10:49 AM norias: nice
10:50 AM roycroft: yeah
10:50 AM roycroft: i went to the trials at the old hayward field in 2008
10:50 AM roycroft: it was a lot of fun
10:50 AM roycroft: and some amazing performances
10:50 AM roycroft: it wasn't the actual olympics, of course, but it was our olympic team, weeks before the olympics
10:51 AM roycroft: and a couple world records were set at the trials
10:52 AM JT-Shop: Missouri only has 40% that have completed the vaccine :( stupid rednecks
10:53 AM roycroft: we're counting first dose numbers when we set our goals
10:53 AM roycroft: i think our percentage who are fully vaccinated is still around 50%
10:53 AM norias: JT-Shop: california is at 46%
10:54 AM roycroft: and california is fully open again
10:54 AM CloudEvil: First dose isn't ideal, but it's pretty good protection generally.
10:54 AM CloudEvil: >>50%
10:54 AM norias: I think people are recording the numbers different
10:54 AM roycroft: first does is pretty much an absolute guarantee that if you get it you won't die from it
10:54 AM roycroft: dose
10:54 AM norias: vaccinated / population
10:54 AM roycroft: but you can still get sick and spread it
10:55 AM norias: vaccinated / eligible population
10:55 AM roycroft: well, we only count people 12 and older, because there is no approved vaccine for young children
10:56 AM CloudEvil: Which is fucked, as kids get longcovid. Considering mortality the only outcome to be avoided by vaccines is criminal.
10:57 AM CloudEvil: I may be biased on this topic as I got something which is symptomatically identical to longcovid at 10.
10:57 AM roycroft: i don't think anyone is doing that
10:58 AM roycroft: nobody in the medical community is suggesting that just getting the first dose of a multi-dose regimen is acceptable
10:59 AM roycroft: and nobody in the medical community thinks it is unimportant that there is no approved vaccine for young children
10:59 AM CloudEvil: I mean a lot of policy around covid in kids seems driven solely by the lack of 'severe' outcomes in them.
11:00 AM CloudEvil: Neglecting entirely longcovid.
11:00 AM roycroft: politicians have an incredibly difficult job
11:00 AM roycroft: i think most of them are doing the best they can
11:02 AM roycroft: unfortunately, federal policy early in the pandemic made things even more difficult for the state and local politicians
11:03 AM roycroft: i'm really glad we're finally coming out of the pandemic, but i certainly hope that it's not rushed, and the final important bits forgotten
11:03 AM roycroft: when there is approval for a vaccine for young children, i expect my state to push hard to get all the kids innoculated
11:04 AM roycroft: i hope most other states do as well
11:04 AM roycroft: sadly, the state next door, idaho, will probably do nothing
11:11 AM Tom_L: are they complacent?
11:12 AM roycroft: not at all
11:12 AM roycroft: they're vehemently anti-vax
11:13 AM roycroft: the governor of idaho is one of the most conservative governors in the nation
11:13 AM Tom_L: seems we're at 47% and back open again
11:14 AM roycroft: he was recently out of state at a conference, and while he was gone, the acting governor issued an executive order rescinding the masking mandate
11:14 AM roycroft: the governor immediately returned home and reinstated it
11:14 AM roycroft: now he's being primaried
12:05 PM Joe_Hildreth: The HAL Configuration panel that can be launched from AXIS and GMOCCAPY, can it be launched from within halrun on the command line?
12:46 PM Tom_L: Joe_Hildreth, http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/getting-started/running-linuxcnc.html
12:55 PM Tom_L: not that i can see
01:22 PM roycroft: my ginormous clamp is arriving today
01:22 PM roycroft: i could have used it yesterday
01:24 PM roycroft: and the house will pass the juneteenth bill today
01:24 PM roycroft: i'd be willing to bet the president will sign it before the 19th, and we'll have a juneteenth holiday this year
01:25 PM roycroft: which will mostly be moot, because juneteenth falls on saturday, unless it's going to be a monday holiday thing
01:26 PM Joe_Hildreth: TOM_L, thanks. I was thinking maybe it was a user component that could be launched from halrun like halscope or halmeter. Thank you for the help.
01:26 PM roycroft: and it's not
01:32 PM JT-Cave: Joe_Hildreth, yes you can run hal show from a terminal
02:10 PM drdoc: JT-Cave: Texas is still at 38%
02:12 PM Joe_Hildreth: JT-Cave, that worked. I ran halrun in one terminal and halshow in another terminal. That worked perfectly. Thanks, it shows two halcmd components in the component list, but that should not affect anything I am doing with it. Thank you for the tip!
02:13 PM drdoc: and Gov. Abbott started opening the state while we were effrectively at 0%
02:14 PM Joe_Hildreth: Guess we were lucky. In Tennessee, there was essentially no lockdown. Other in the big blue cities. Nashville, Memphis, etc
02:52 PM jepler: Joe_Hildreth: this works for me so give it a try ... halcmd: loadusr $(TCLLIBPATH)/bin/halshow.tcl
02:52 PM jepler: may only work with a "RIP" source build, not sure
02:52 PM jepler: but more generally, you could also give it the full location of the halshow.tcl file
03:07 PM Joe_Hildreth: jepler: Thank you. I will try that.
03:10 PM Tom_L: i was thinking you meant the ini configuration tool
03:17 PM Joe_Hildreth: I am running debian 10 lcnc 2.8 iso. When I run halcmd: loadusr $(TCLLIBPATH)/bin/halshow.tcl I get an error about the path or env variable not found. So I ran using the complete path, just returned to the halcmd: prompt and did not load the HAL Show dialog.
03:19 PM Joe_Hildreth: I wanted to use halshow in conjunction with halrun. Running it in a separate terminal as JT suggested works.
03:43 PM Joe_Hildreth: TOM_L, sorry, I should have been a little more clear.
04:59 PM _unreal_: so the cyclone I built for my vacuum setup for my cnc works like a dream
05:00 PM _unreal_: just waiting on my new high power vacuum to take full advantage of it
05:00 PM _unreal_: purchased a blower/sucker
05:02 PM _unreal_: I'm hoping for a lot more suction then I have now... I'd love to add an air assist to my cnc IF I have enough vacuum I can then put positive to blow chips out and still collect them
05:06 PM CaptHindsight[m]: anyone with OP status in here?
05:15 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], jepler is afik
05:18 PM CaptHindsight[m]: will poke him when he's around to try bridging again from matrix, seems to be working better now
05:18 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight[m], /chanserv info #linuxcnc
05:19 PM Tom_L: chanserv isn't in this channel though
05:19 PM CaptHindsight[m]: do commands work over a bridge?
05:19 PM Tom_L: it will echo in one that does
05:19 PM Tom_L: no idea
05:20 PM CaptHindsight[m]: "Unrecognized command: /chanserv info #linuxcnc" so nope
05:21 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, is live I believe
05:27 PM Tom_L: no others listed but jepler
05:40 PM JT-Shop: game on to install the rest of the spoke machine automatic feeder, they have been running in manual for a week
05:40 PM Tom_L: yay!
05:41 PM Tom_L: bet the operator will be glad to see that
05:41 PM JT-Shop: yep he will get to run 3 machines then
05:41 PM Tom_L: hah
05:42 PM JT-Shop: he's pretty cool so no issues with him rejecting it as it makes his job easier
05:42 PM Tom_L: you said he was pretty happy to see the first one
05:43 PM JT-Shop: yep he likes it a lot because he does not have to stand in front of the spoke lathe all day pushing
05:44 PM Tom_L: i heard it was 101 today
05:44 PM JT-Shop: my pet runt deer really likes the sliced apples
05:44 PM JT-Shop: at your place?
05:45 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:45 PM JT-Shop: 89 here
05:46 PM JT-Shop: my buddy from wisconsin said it's been crazy hot and so dry his yard is brown
05:47 PM Roguish: 94 here now. forecast 104 tomorrow.....
05:47 PM JT-Shop: got the slitting saw but no time to work on the stripper today
05:47 PM JT-Shop: ouch
05:47 PM _unreal_: 76 but its raining
05:47 PM _unreal_: rather low temp for south florida this time a year
05:47 PM Tom_L: and that is your nation's weather report...
05:48 PM _unreal_: JT-Shop, ;) how many bills you go though when working the stripper ????
05:49 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, did you get the fine tooth or the coarser one?
05:49 PM JT-Shop: 220 tooth
05:49 PM Tom_L: diameter?
05:49 PM JT-Shop: 4"
05:50 PM Tom_L: that's big
05:50 PM JT-Shop: 1" arbor
05:50 PM Tom_L: most of those i have are
05:50 PM JT-Shop: mcmaster had a 6" one
05:50 PM Tom_L: couple small ones are either 1/2 or 5/8
05:51 PM JT-Shop: I had a bunch that a buddy gave me but the hole was 3/8" or 7/16" so I tossed them in the scrap pile
05:51 PM _unreal_: LOVE IT just mounted my cnc mill touch plate holder I pinted
05:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: another sunny dry 70's day here
05:52 PM CaptHindsight[m]: back to the oven tomorrow
05:52 PM _unreal_: yaa all day rain
05:52 PM Tom_L: i'd like to find a .125" cheap keyslot cutter
05:52 PM _unreal_: yesterday today
05:52 PM _unreal_: then again we have had ZERO rain for about 5 months
05:52 PM Tom_L: but the depth of cut limits what i can find
05:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: if Florida was between New Mexico and Arizona it would be warm and DRY
05:53 PM _unreal_: well time for shower then I need to clean up my cnc table and remount the compound board so I can start the next set of cuts
05:53 PM CaptHindsight[m]: but since they put it right out in the ocean it tends to be humid
05:53 PM JT-Shop: IIRC I have a 3" .125 slitting saw
05:53 PM _unreal_: making "SLING" plates to mount on a few boats so the travel lift crews know where to put there straps
05:54 PM Tom_L: just about has to be a keyslot cutter
05:54 PM JT-Shop: nope it's 1/4"
05:54 PM Tom_L: to clear the vise
05:55 PM JT-Shop: hmm would not an end mill work better for that?
05:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_P2_2.jpg
05:55 PM Tom_L: i'm using an em right now
05:55 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_finished.jpg
05:56 PM JT-Shop: tough part to hold
05:56 PM Tom_L: wanted to profile on P1, cut the slot and holes and flip it like i did that other one
05:57 PM Tom_L: similar to this: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/New/A3_3.jpg
05:57 PM Tom_L: start with a rectangular block
05:57 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/New/A3_4.jpg
05:57 PM Tom_L: then flip it and finish the profile like that one
05:58 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure how well it would hold using a keyslot cutter though
06:00 PM Tom_L: P1 is a bit iffy the way it's done right now
06:00 PM Tom_L: cutting several from a plate leaving a skin cut to punch them out
06:00 PM XXCoder: tom cant add clamps bolt into jaw?
06:00 PM XXCoder: add a MO before cutting
06:01 PM Tom_L: the part is ~1" long
06:01 PM XXCoder: well yeah, just need single clamp on on other end from keyslot cut
06:02 PM XXCoder: since its clamped, all you need to is to hold it against pull out
06:03 PM * JT-Shop calls it a day
06:03 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_visejaw.jpg
06:04 PM Tom_L: holding em like that doing both cuts at the same time works ok
06:04 PM Tom_L: it's cutting the profile that's a bit sketchy
06:05 PM XXCoder: hmm i see room there for a bolt holes, so maybe can add clamp to push parts in to keep it there, but not sure if strong enough
06:06 PM Tom_L: it's a small hole
06:06 PM Tom_L: not even sure a 2/56 would fit in it
06:07 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A8_2.jpg
06:07 PM Tom_L: another fun one
06:09 PM XXCoder: npot top down, side in
06:09 PM XXCoder: *not
06:09 PM XXCoder: pushing parts towards shaped hole on fixture
06:14 PM Tom_L: i'm just contemplating a different way to cut them
06:14 PM XXCoder: yeah many ways to do it :)
06:15 PM Tom_L: not too many
06:15 PM XXCoder: common way at place i worked at, its just shape one side of block, then flip it. though they'd have seperate fixture for broach and such
06:16 PM Tom_L: that's what i'm looking at but to do the slot i'd need a keyslot cutter
06:16 PM Tom_L: and they get a bit pricey
06:18 PM XXCoder: you got final model picture?
06:18 PM Tom_L: keyslot cutter needs .375 DOC
06:18 PM Tom_L: .125 wide
06:20 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/Extra/A12_finished.jpg
06:22 PM XXCoder: cant run a endmill to cut slot?
06:22 PM Tom_L: that's how i do it now
06:23 PM XXCoder: i guess too much chatter or something?
06:23 PM Tom_L: trying to make P1 safer
06:23 PM Tom_L: i can get a cutter for $90 :)
06:24 PM Tom_L: well that's solid carbide
06:27 PM XXCoder: cool
06:28 PM XXCoder: how do you plan to hold it for keycutter
06:28 PM XXCoder: *keyslot
06:28 PM Tom_L: like i did A3
06:28 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/New/A3_1.jpg
06:28 PM Tom_L: in P1
06:30 PM Tom_L: then flip and finish the profile
06:31 PM Tom_L: might not work any better than the current way but i may try it
06:31 PM XXCoder: it has third position to point side upwards or to side for keyslot cutting?
06:36 PM Tom_L: only 2
06:37 PM XXCoder: i guess i just cant figure when slot is added lol
06:37 PM Tom_L: P1
06:37 PM XXCoder: ok yeah im a moron
06:37 PM XXCoder: i pictured keyslot cutter wrong
06:37 PM XXCoder: so it threw me off
06:37 PM XXCoder: yeah makes sense
06:38 PM XXCoder: also simpler
06:38 PM Tom_L: i think a bit safer than profiling a bunch from a plate leaving a skin cut to punch them out
06:40 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNJXA3Qv2i4
06:40 PM Tom_L: that was on the sherline spindle so i had to go slower
06:41 PM XXCoder: thats orginial method with endmill eh
06:41 PM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO2AvRVU0iE&t=39s
06:41 PM Tom_L: cutting a bunch from a plate
06:41 PM Tom_L: that's the part i don't really care for
06:42 PM XXCoder: its essentally constant slot cutting
06:42 PM Tom_L: yeah
06:42 PM XXCoder: i see coolant spray got caught on edge heh
06:45 PM XXCoder: one of issues with "profile then flip over finish it" is blocks can vary in size. we fixed that by having it have groove inside jaws you place block in it, and it skims one side off
06:45 PM XXCoder: then its sized correctly for that so it can grip block and part 2 profile equally
06:46 PM Tom_L: on this, P2 is held by the profile so it doesn't matter
06:46 PM XXCoder: or have seperate jaw just for that use
06:46 PM Tom_L: i did cut a step for P1 blanks
06:47 PM XXCoder: nice yeah thats easy way to make blocks nicely sized
06:47 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/rue/Can_Holder/A3/New/A3_1.jpg
06:47 PM Tom_L: locate off the left edge, notice it's hanging over the vise
06:47 PM Tom_L: otherwise i wouldn't have room for P2 on the same jaw set
06:48 PM XXCoder: yeah it shouldnt affect anything
06:48 PM XXCoder: i see block remains is thick enough
06:49 PM Tom_L: yeah i'm wondering about that on the next one
06:50 PM Tom_L: with the slot allowance that only gives me .093" to hold it in P1
06:57 PM XXCoder: hm can always use wider jaws I guess
06:57 PM Tom_L: no, the thickness
06:57 PM XXCoder: I know, more grip is better when its that thin, but yeah not quite enough i guess
06:57 PM Tom_L: 5/16 material with a .125 slot in the middle
06:58 PM Tom_L: to do that i need to profile more than half on P1
06:58 PM Tom_L: i'm thinking it should be ok
06:58 PM XXCoder: i guess abostuate minium is tip of keyslot cutter, and better to have some room
06:59 PM Tom_L: on that other part, the profile cutter almost touches the vise jaws
07:00 PM Tom_L: it would be the same on this one but only held by .093" material
07:01 PM XXCoder: would .09" be strong enough to hold as slot is being cut?
07:01 PM Tom_L: maybe one day we'll find out :D
07:02 PM Tom_L: it would be right at the vise jaw
07:02 PM XXCoder: walk it in lol
07:02 PM Tom_L: oh hell no... 25k rpm 400 ipm!
07:10 PM XXCoder: fast
07:10 PM XXCoder: any of you at texas?
07:11 PM XXCoder: is things ok? heard of power issues again :(

07:18 PM jesseg is now known as jesseg-phone
07:20 PM jesseg-phone is now known as jesseg

09:41 PM veegee: That feeling when you've eaten something bad and you know it's going to be a horrible night
09:41 PM veegee: Preemptive pepto bismol is the only thing I can think of
09:42 PM CloudEvil: Or purging
09:42 PM veegee: I don't think I'm brave enough for that
09:42 PM veegee: At least it was just vegetables that were in the fridge for too long
09:51 PM roycroft: rotten veggies can make you sick
09:51 PM roycroft: rotten meat can kill you
09:52 PM roycroft: rotten veggies can, too, but not under normal circumstances
09:52 PM roycroft: i recommend generally avoiding any foodstuffs that are past their prime
09:53 PM roycroft: because i am a master of the obvious!
10:49 PM CaptHindsight[m]: avoid swallowing poisons as well, the bottles tend to have a skull and crossbones on them

11:34 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Yeah, when you look in the fridge and things are looking back and going "Whachoo lookin at sucka ?" you know it's time to clean it out or deal with first contact with an emergent civilization... xD
11:36 PM Bleepshop: Mine is currently stuck in an ice age with severe glaciation... [TRANSLATION: The refrigerator was in severe need of defrosting over a year ago and has gotten worse.]
11:37 PM roycroft: when you think indiana jones might be interested in the contents of your fridge you probably don't want to go snacking on that stuf
11:37 PM roycroft: f
11:39 PM Bleepshop: That's my drinks fridge so it never has anything stay too long except the ice growing in the freezer bay that is ~90mm thick as of this week.
