12:04 AM veegee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8R6fgN-RsY
12:11 AM veegee: Need to make myself a toolpost grinder to get that surface finish on mild steel
12:13 AM enleth: veegee: the only thing missing is a guy somewhere in the background hauling a 4m-high nondescript pile of barely tied down stuff on a moped
12:14 AM veegee: exactly
12:14 AM veegee: But some of the other videos have that
12:15 AM enleth: I've always wondered how they assemble those piles
12:19 AM enleth: for all I know, they could be putting it together from the top, with an upside-down moped going in last, then flipping the whole thing over
12:19 AM enleth: doesn't sound any more bonkers than any other way to do something like that
12:20 AM veegee: Yeah it's all highly embarrassing. I get that there's rampant poverty and all that but people really need to stop having kids
12:21 AM veegee: Highly off topic, but I can never understand the decision to have kids when one can barely support themselves
12:21 AM veegee: Just adopt a cat or dog, they're so much better anyway
01:12 AM Deejay: moin
04:05 AM Tom_L: morning
09:32 AM * flyback headbutts veegee
09:32 AM flyback: yes_please_nuck
09:32 AM flyback: mannish_market_nuck
10:39 AM veegee: FINALLY getting mirror-like surface finish on mild steel on the lathe
10:40 AM veegee: Looks like positive rake inserts only, like CCMT3,2.5,1
10:42 AM veegee: absolutely must maintain minimum surface cutting speed of 500 sfm (ugh imperial), and finish is highly sensitive to feed rate with lower feed getting better finish, but don't want to risk cratering in the carbide insert
10:50 AM veegee: Deejay good morning to YOU
10:50 AM veegee: Now I have to figure out why HSS never gave me that mirror finish. Always gives a moderate finish but tolerates a wide range of feeds and speeds with consistent results
10:55 AM veegee: Had to waste a lot of steel to dial it in, but getting way better finishes than tubalcain and blondiehacks by far now
11:06 AM veegee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn4lf4ea6pg my surface finish is equivalent to that now
11:24 AM veegee: I love his little rant about how Kennametal and the manufacturers and distributors hang up on you if you want to buy just two tools LOL
12:39 PM roycroft: pop culture mystifies me
12:40 PM roycroft: i just read a headline that says "'bach' host harrison out for good"
12:40 PM roycroft: i figured it was a story about the oregon bach festival
12:40 PM roycroft: so i started reading
12:40 PM roycroft: there's a tv show called "the bachelor"
12:41 PM roycroft: i guess 'bach' is short for that somehow
12:41 PM roycroft: and this harrison person has been hosting that show for 19 years
12:44 PM roycroft: i've never heard of the show, nor him, and i still can't sort out how one is supposed to glean any meaning of the word 'bach' other than the family of composers, or the german meaning of their family name - brook or stream
12:44 PM roycroft: i do watch television occasionally, and am familiar with a number of tv shows
12:52 PM jdh: do you often find yourself saying/thinking "You kids stay off my lawn" ?
01:01 PM veegee: jdh I do
01:03 PM roycroft: i don't often, but i have had to threaten to call the cops on some neighbor kids recently
01:03 PM roycroft: not because they are on my lawn
01:03 PM roycroft: but because they run into my shop while i'm operating machinery
01:03 PM roycroft: i've told them a dozen times to stay off the property when i'm working, that it's unsafe for them to run around in my shop
01:05 PM veegee: roycroft why not just tell their parents?
01:05 PM roycroft: in my mind, that's not an old man thing - it's a safety thing
01:05 PM roycroft: i don't know who their parents are
01:05 PM veegee: Cops seems a little extreme
01:05 PM Tom_L: do they?
01:05 PM roycroft: i've tried to figure out where they live, but i haven't been able to
01:05 PM veegee: If they're black, it could be a death sentence
01:05 PM Tom_L: putting wasps in a vaccuum seems extreme too
01:05 PM roycroft: and when i ask them i get f-bombs as a response
01:06 PM veegee: roycroft LOL so they're teenagers, not like 10 year olds just running around the playground type of kids
01:06 PM Tom_L: veegee, we can't bring up that fact anymore
01:06 PM roycroft: which leads me to believe that even if i knew who their parents are, if they're 7 year old kids dropping f-bombs, i'm not sure their parents would do anything about it
01:06 PM veegee: Tom_L Wasps can die a painful, slow death
01:07 PM veegee: That sting took a week to heal
01:07 PM Tom_L: heh
01:07 PM veegee: Useless things, they're just aggressive and chase you
01:07 PM Tom_L: hornets are worse
01:07 PM veegee: Bees at least just want to be safe and won't chase you far. If you leave them alone, you're fine
01:07 PM roycroft: most wasps are not aggressive unless they feel threatened
01:07 PM veegee: Yeah any kind of wasp-like insect
01:08 PM veegee: Doesn't take much to make it feel threatened
01:08 PM roycroft: their threshold for feeling threatened is lower than for bees, generally
01:08 PM roycroft: and then there are the murder hornets
01:08 PM veegee: Japanese giant hornets are aggressive, yes
01:08 PM roycroft: two of which have been spotted in southern washington
01:09 PM roycroft: so they're really close to my state
01:09 PM veegee: Other wasps are just as aggressive. But the giant hornets are far more dangerous, that's the real issue
01:09 PM veegee: My little pump action bug-a-salt salt shotgun won't touch them
01:09 PM roycroft: if not eradicated soon, we'll probably have them in eugene in a few more years
01:09 PM roycroft: the murder hornets kill pollinators
01:09 PM veegee: Pollinators have adapted
01:09 PM roycroft: thus destroying agriculture businesses
01:09 PM veegee: at least the japanese ones
01:10 PM veegee: Not sure if the American bees have figured out the surround and overheat strategy
01:10 PM roycroft: dumbasses illegally spraing insecticides kill a lot more pollinators than murder hornets, though
01:10 PM roycroft: spraying
01:11 PM veegee: Need to build quadcopters with surgical strike capabilities of some sort, like bug spray wasp killer
01:11 PM veegee: That stuff makes them write and twitch and kills them slowly
01:12 PM veegee: But the Japanese giant hornets are big enough that they pose a strike threat to the propellors. Need something heavy duty with ducted fans
01:14 PM veegee: They won't make it to Canada though, way too cold
01:15 PM veegee: roycroft paint ball guns work well vs. kids
01:16 PM veegee: and security cameras to prove they were threatening your or their safety
01:16 PM roycroft: i'm going to continue to try to find out where they live, and talk to their parents
01:17 PM roycroft: they way they behave, they may well be destined to have to deal with the juvenile justice system, but i'm going to try to avoid being the person who starts them down that path
01:17 PM roycroft: because once in the system, kids tend not to ever get out of it
01:18 PM roycroft: but if they run into my shop again while i'm operating my table saw, with my back towards them, i'm not sure what i'll have to do
01:18 PM roycroft: it's extremely dangerous for them to be running around like that
01:33 PM roycroft: for both them and for me
01:53 PM veegee: You're a lot more patient than I am. I don't let little shits like that on my property at all
01:53 PM veegee: A garden hose works well too and is less objectionable
01:54 PM veegee: I have mine hooked up to an air diaphragm pump and reservoir with the pressure boosted to 120 psi lol
01:55 PM veegee: Low power pressure washer would also work great
01:55 PM veegee: Ooooh Ooooh I know!! High frequency sounds. Such speakers are used to deter kids from loitering in certain public places
01:56 PM veegee: adults can't hear them and they're extremely unpleasant
02:37 PM veegee: Nice, you can get ER40 collet holders that fit in a 5C collet chuck.
02:42 PM FinboySlick: roycroft: One trick that worked quite well for me was to just take pictures of them.
02:42 PM Tom_L: just get a lidar from the Govt....
02:43 PM FinboySlick: In fact, I just pretended to take pictures of them (flash camera, aimed in their general direction)
02:43 PM Tom_L: FinboySlick, not a bad idea... then they'd likely mug him, steal his phone and post the pics of FB
02:44 PM Tom_L: we're not dealing with the same little shits you and i grew up with :D
02:44 PM FinboySlick: Well, mine were Canadian kids. They just knocked on my door 30 minutes later after figuring out that I might send the pics to their parents and apologised.
02:44 PM FinboySlick: Never had an issue since.
02:45 PM Tom_L: heh
02:45 PM FinboySlick: That was 5 years or so ago.
02:46 PM FinboySlick: Told them that it's okay, I was a kid doing silly things too. So long as they didn't break anything on the property they were welcome to it.
02:47 PM FinboySlick: If it's no longer forbidden, it's not really exciting.
02:47 PM FinboySlick: So I never saw them since.
02:50 PM veegee: FinboySlick LOL
02:50 PM veegee: Yeah pictures is a good ide
02:50 PM veegee: garden hose if that doesn't work
02:50 PM veegee: These kids are F-bomb kids
02:51 PM veegee: Damn, when I was that age, we were _never_ like that
02:51 PM FinboySlick: veegee: I wouldn't risk the garden hose. The US is very litigious and one could argue that it's assault. Plus that's just goading them to poke the bear, so to speak.
02:51 PM veegee: Can't water your lawn on your own property?
02:51 PM Tom_L: the damn thing just slipped out of my hand...
02:51 PM FinboySlick: Oh I remember running around and stealing potatoes from a farmer's field just 'cause it felt dangerous.
02:52 PM Tom_L: you never shot them from a potatoe gun??
02:53 PM FinboySlick: Nah. Even the few we took felt wasteful to me so I ended up eating them.
02:54 PM FinboySlick: My mother sort of suffered hunger all her life so the whole 'no wasting food' thing organically passed down to me.
02:54 PM roycroft: to perhaps clarify the mentality of these children some more, one of them (and like i said, they're 7ish - maybe the oldest is 9) came up to me the other day and demanded to know for whom i voted, the former president or the current president
02:54 PM FinboySlick: all her *youth* I mean.
02:54 PM roycroft: i replied "i didn't vote for either"
02:55 PM roycroft: and he then demanded to know what i though about the former president, and i responded "i'm not really interested in that"
02:55 PM FinboySlick: roycroft: Sheesh, little brown-shirts.
02:56 PM roycroft: then he proclaimed that the former president is the greatest president in the history of the world, and that his father told him that anyone who did not vote for him is the enemy, and "we'll get them all"
02:56 PM roycroft: so even though i don't know who the parents are, i doubt it would matter
02:56 PM roycroft: there's no having a civil conversation with folks like that
02:56 PM Tom_L: you never know until you try once
02:56 PM roycroft: this is true
02:57 PM Tom_L: from then on, it's war
02:57 PM roycroft: but again, i don't know who the parents are, i haven't been able to figure it out, and when i asked the kids, they f-bombed me
02:57 PM roycroft: i think that if this continues - the invading my shop while i'm working stuff - a call to child protective services might be more prudent than a call to the cops
02:58 PM roycroft: but they would want to know who the parents are, of course
02:58 PM Tom_L: that would take months. they're way too busy
02:58 PM roycroft: sadly, they are
02:59 PM roycroft: that's one of the major problems with the pandemic that's not been talked about enough - domestic violence and child abuse has skyrocketed over the past year
02:59 PM roycroft: and child protective services have been unable to do in-person investigations for the past year
02:59 PM roycroft: they're just now starting to work the backlog
03:01 PM roycroft: i have a double lot, and the second lot is undeveloped
03:01 PM roycroft: as such, the sidewalk ends at the end of my first lot, and my driveway is right on the edge of the property
03:01 PM roycroft: these kids tend to ride their bikes in front of my house a lot - they use my driveway as a transition from the street to the sidewalk
03:02 PM roycroft: i've taken to parking my car in front of the driveway to block access to it while i'm in the shop, and that tends to keep them riding on the street and not coming up the driveway to the sidewalk
03:03 PM roycroft: i live on a dead-end street with very low vehicular traffic, so i'm not afraid that i'm endangering the kids by forcing them to ride their bikes in the street
03:05 PM roycroft: during lunch today i had to rip some strips of poplar, and had barely enough wood to get the number of strips i needed, so i decided to try out the sawblade i just had reground - the one with the wafa thin kerf
03:06 PM roycroft: the strips came off the saw as smooth as if i had hand planed them - they were not glueline ready, they were finish ready
03:06 PM roycroft: they were the cleanest sawcuts i've ever made, so i'm happy with the new saw shop
03:06 PM veegee: roycroft 5c is the way to go. There are cheap adapters to hold ER40 and ER32 in a 5C chuck
03:07 PM veegee: < $100 for the adapter and all your ER collets are compatible
03:07 PM roycroft: veegee: the only reason i considered er was because i already had some er collets
03:07 PM roycroft: 5c seems superior in almost every other way
03:07 PM veegee: Yeah I'd need ER for my CAT 40 holder anyway as well as tailstock MT3 taper to hold center drills
03:08 PM roycroft: and i really think you'd be better served with a collet chuck than tryng to do something wonky with an expensive scroll chuck that will always be fiddly at best
03:08 PM veegee: well yeah that's why I spent all evening balancing my 4 jaw and now placing an order for a 5C collet chuck, collets, square and hex holder
03:11 PM veegee: small magnets and a lot of guessing was enough to get the 4 jaw balanced. Just have to do a proper balance on a static balancer and grind out some material for a permanent solution
03:18 PM drdoc: roycroft: In Texas, if you know the address you don't need a name
03:20 PM drdoc: if they're endangering themselves by trespassing in a PPE area, you don't need even that
03:21 PM drdoc: personally, all distaste aside, I'd very quietly call the police when they arrive
03:22 PM drdoc: they're gonna hurt either you or themselves
03:25 PM drdoc: or, much worse, force you to put your hands on one of them
03:34 PM roycroft: that was what i was thinking
03:35 PM roycroft: but again, i know that once there's been contact with the police, it's a slippery slope to being in the juvenile justice system, and then the criminal justice system
03:35 PM roycroft: and i'd rather not be the person who gets them going on that path
03:35 PM roycroft: which is why i'm thinking child protective services might be a better route
03:36 PM roycroft: that's at least a buffer between the kids and the system
03:37 PM roycroft: the numbers are pretty clear on this - the first time a kid is contacted by the police, that kid's chances of further encounters with the police go way up
03:38 PM roycroft: as well, i think a lot of the behavior problems with those kids likely stem from their parenting, and the cops would not address that, while child protective services would
03:38 PM roycroft: i've never known a kid that young with such a mouth
03:38 PM roycroft: a year spent away from school hasn't helped, i'm sure
03:39 PM roycroft: if the kid were in school his teacher would definitely have dealt with his attitude
03:40 PM roycroft: it's only one of them that drops the f-bombs
03:40 PM roycroft: the other two just chortle when he does it
03:40 PM roycroft: he's definitely the gang leader
03:58 PM roycroft: if only i had a bigger shop
03:58 PM roycroft: there's a 20x108 leblonde lathe on cl for $1k, that seems to be in pretty good shape
