04:25 AM Tom_L: morning
05:06 AM lag_ is now known as lag
05:23 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:52 AM jymmmm: Morning
09:48 AM veegee: Tom_L SURFACE FINISHHHHH
09:48 AM veegee: Tom_L By the way, TiAlN mde next to no difference on mild steel
10:25 AM veegee: pcw_home since Fedex issue is giving me an opportunity to make a new order, I'll an ethernet connected board as well maybe. What's your most feature rich ethernet connected board?
10:26 AM veegee: 6i24-25 has three 50 pin ports which is great. The more expansion capabilities, the better
11:35 AM ChanServ changed topic of #linuxcnc to: LinuxCNC is a linux-based open-source CNC control. | https://www.linuxcnc.org/2021/06/02/IRC-Server-Change/
11:40 AM jepler: Hey all! Following the example of a number of large projects we are transitioning to a different chat service. Please check out the official news at https://www.linuxcnc.org/2021/06/02/IRC-Server-Change/ , which includes an explanation of why I am not telling you the new service by name. This room/channel will exist indefinitely, but we hope to see you all at our new home!
11:40 AM jepler: Big thanks to Seb, Tom, and Rene who have all pitched in with bits of infrastructure work to help with the transition.
11:56 AM roycroft: please go away and quit spamming us, jepler
11:57 AM roycroft: this kind of crap is the very reason i left the new network
12:11 PM drdoc: roycroft: I repeat
12:11 PM drdoc: "Biggest storm, in tiniest teacup, ever."
12:12 PM drdoc: I must just be blessed. The impending implosion of IRC World has not impacted my daily life one little bit.
12:19 PM drdoc: oh, dear sweet jeebus
12:20 PM drdoc: https://www.deejo.com/en/4-reasons-to-upgrade-your-pocket-knife-immediately
12:20 PM drdoc: they've turned a pocketknife into a Bro Blade
12:23 PM roycroft: i still use my buck knife that i've had for 45 or so years
12:24 PM roycroft: it's a folding model, with the brass ends
12:24 PM roycroft: i see no need to "upgrade" it, ever
12:25 PM roycroft: those fancy new knives are really nice, but if i had one i'd be afraid to use it
12:36 PM drdoc: I have a couple of '70s Gerbers, from when they were still made in Oregon
12:36 PM drdoc: have yet to find anything to match
12:36 PM mrec: is anyone using one of those xhc pendants?
12:37 PM drdoc: that Deejo is a trip to the ER waiting to happen
12:37 PM mrec: I'm using it on a daily basis nowadays, but in order to start an NC program I have to push stop on the pendant
12:37 PM mrec: and sometimes start just doesn't act I have to push it again
12:38 PM mrec: I think it's polling the key status instead of using usb interrupt transfers..
12:44 PM _methods: that knife does not look very practical
12:44 PM _methods: i like my benchmade's
12:44 PM _methods: good knives, a bit expensive though
01:19 PM jepler: roycroft: It's a mess and no decision would satisfy everyone. I and the others I mentioned are trying to make the best decision on behalf of the project. I hope you'll continue to be a member of our community in a way that fits with your values too.
01:35 PM roycroft: i'm fine with people moving
01:35 PM roycroft: i'm fine with posting on the mailing list and website
01:36 PM roycroft: i'm not fine with the spamming and political bullshit that has defined this, and pretty much every other irc split
01:37 PM roycroft: this one has been especially nasty, though, and caused me to sour on the new network early on, while still taking no position about this one
01:38 PM Vq: The rename from OPN was certainly more orderly...
01:49 PM Tom_L: a notification here is no different than one on the list or site
01:49 PM _methods: one more network to add to teh client not like it matters i think most irc users are already connected to multiple networks
01:50 PM _methods: connect to both and see which one dies
01:50 PM Tom_L: me? not by choice
01:50 PM Tom_L: neither will, it will just cause a split
01:50 PM Tom_L: i've seen this before
01:50 PM _methods: you can't connect to multiple networks in your irc client?
01:51 PM Tom_L: sure i can
01:51 PM _methods: ah ok
01:51 PM Tom_L: do i want to?
01:51 PM Tom_L: no
01:51 PM _methods: what it's so much fun
01:51 PM _methods: you don't know what you're missing
01:52 PM Tom_L: sure do, i've been asked to log them
01:52 PM _methods: no i'm talking about adding networks to your client
01:52 PM _methods: it's a real hoot
01:52 PM Tom_L: been there done that
01:52 PM _methods: but yeah you're not missing anything in the other channel
01:53 PM Tom_L: channel s
01:53 PM Tom_L: don't forget matrix
01:54 PM Tom_L: oh and others that jumped ship and went to dalnet
01:54 PM _methods: oh i need to reconnect to dalnet then i guess
01:54 PM Vq: I honestly thought more people would leave for OFTC.
01:54 PM _methods: lol
01:54 PM Tom_L: nothing good comes from it
01:55 PM _methods: freenode, gamesurge, libera, and tracker channels lol
01:55 PM _methods: whats another couple networks
01:55 PM _methods: tracker networks
01:56 PM _methods: well one way or another it appears to be over at this point the split has occurred
01:56 PM Tom_L: i'll miss you dearly :)
01:56 PM _methods: lies
01:57 PM Tom_L: hahaha
02:12 PM roycroft: i haven't gotten around to installing a matrix client yet
02:13 PM * roycroft has been busy
02:15 PM Tom_L: you're making busy work for yourself... pluggin holes n all
03:02 PM roycroft: so folks, i have a welding/brazing/soldering question
03:03 PM roycroft: i need to bend some 1/8" steel plate with multiple 90 degree bends
03:04 PM roycroft: what i usually do when i need to do that and need sharp, clean corners is mill a vee groove along the bend line about 2/3 the thickness of the steel, then it's easy to bend cleanly, and that's what i'll do for this project
03:04 PM roycroft: but i need it to be a little stronger than i usually need when i do bends like that
03:04 PM roycroft: i want to strengthen the bend with solder/brazing/welding, but with zero or almost zero weld buildup
03:05 PM roycroft: i'm thinking silver solder might work
03:05 PM roycroft: or should i just fire up the tig welder without any filler rod and spot weld?
03:05 PM roycroft: or do the same with an oxy-acetylene torch?
03:06 PM roycroft: it's not a critical part and it won't bear a lot of weight or endure a lot of stress - i just want to strengthen it a bit
03:06 PM roycroft: and those holes can wait - they're covered up by parts at the moment :)
03:07 PM roycroft: but that's a 10 minute job whever i get around to it
05:02 PM enleth: roycroft: looks like brazing would be ideal
05:05 PM enleth: roycroft: apply flux before bending to make sure you get full penetration and it'll easily beat TIG tacking in strength
05:07 PM enleth: if your bending setup allows it, put filler in the fluxed groove, heat the thing up, close the bend on the liquid filler and hold it under the bending force until the joint solidifies
05:07 PM roycroft: i don't need a lot of strength
05:08 PM roycroft: just enough to keep it from opening up
05:08 PM roycroft: but brazing i can do
05:08 PM roycroft: i can put a little flux in the groove, but i don't think ian put any filler in it - i'll be using a 90 degree cutter to make the groove, and will be bending to 90 degrees
05:09 PM roycroft: if i'm honest, my first inclination was to tig it, but i don't want to bother pulling out and wrestling with the 6ga extension cord
05:10 PM roycroft: it will take me much longer pull out the extension cord and put it away than it would take to do the welding
05:10 PM roycroft: but if i put some flux in the groove, i can probably braze it without much buildup
05:11 PM roycroft: i don't mind a little build up - i just don't want a big bead of it
05:11 PM enleth: see, that's the one advantage of always forgetting to put the extension cord away
05:11 PM roycroft: i have to put it away every time
05:12 PM roycroft: it's 22mm in diameter and 30m long
05:13 PM roycroft: and i have to stretch it through the middle of my woodshop, out two doors, out to the outbuilding, and in another door
05:13 PM roycroft: i can't close any of the doors with the extension cord in place
05:15 PM roycroft: i would have to do some major work to the fabrication shop building to bring it up to code
05:15 PM roycroft: and i'm not going to do that work, so it does not have any permanent power - just extension cords
05:16 PM roycroft: for what i do that works fine, except the welding cord is a hassle
05:17 PM roycroft: but right now i have other fun work to do to prep for this bending/brazing - i have to make a metric part with us customary equipment/tooling
05:53 PM veegee: Tom_L https://www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-us/knowledge/general-turning/pages/how-to-choose-correct-turning-insert.aspx
05:53 PM veegee: Tom_L still set on AlTiN inserts?
06:36 PM Tom_L: never was
06:36 PM Tom_L: i just got a couple cutters coated with it to try
06:36 PM Tom_L: it's supposed to be pretty good on stainless
07:44 PM _unreal_: getting lightburn setup err camera tuning alignment
09:20 PM drdoc: https://imgur.com/a/VdRJWQf
09:20 PM drdoc: new toyzzzz
09:37 PM Tom_L: any good stuff?
09:59 PM flyback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKRB0-upTw0
10:10 PM Tom_L: i admire their use of primitive tools
10:52 PM drdoc: Tom_L: I'm pretty happy with that Sherline index head
10:53 PM drdoc: The other one isn't nearly as nice, but it never hurts to have a beater
10:53 PM drdoc: 2 3.5" 4-jaw chucks, neither of which fit the Sherline
10:54 PM drdoc: ..yet
10:55 PM drdoc: a ton of abrasive wheels, a Foredom "Precision" drill stand that should fit one of my handpieces
10:55 PM drdoc: I *think* that's a real ruby in the glass vial - if it is it's a good one
10:56 PM drdoc: 4 pyrex, 1 anchor hocking, and 3 libbey glass cake pans
10:58 PM drdoc: 3 or 4 very nice pin gauges - not gage pins. Sheet metal with holes
10:58 PM drdoc: :-)
10:59 PM drdoc: a teeny tiny toolmaker's vise, about 1.5" jaws and about that much travel
11:00 PM drdoc: I have a strong feeling that I'll be taking a bunch of those clockwork parts and getting my goldberg on
11:03 PM drdoc: do you guys reflexively look away when they strike an arc in a video?
