01:30 AM Deejay: moin
04:02 AM veegee: Putting an aluminum clipboard over the slide ways on my lathe inspired me to come up with a design for solid bellows
04:03 AM veegee: super easy to clean compared to flexible cloth/rubber bellows
04:03 AM Tom_L: that's what skunkworks did on his green machine
04:04 AM Tom_L: morning
04:13 AM Tom_L: skip to 2:48 and you can see his https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpsfvV6KwUU
05:14 AM veegee: Wtf I AM SO CONFUSED
05:15 AM veegee: There's a special "P" gear on my lathe for longitudinal feed (not threading)
05:15 AM veegee: I opened up the gearbox fully
05:15 AM veegee: It's obvious how the levers slide the gears to change ratios
05:15 AM veegee: But in the special "P" position, the gears for the final stage, the lead screw, go into a neutral zone
05:16 AM veegee: all other positions for threading engage correctly and very obviously for the right threading ratios
05:16 AM veegee: But for the P position which is apparently supposed to be used for slow feeding according to the chart just makes the long. feed go into neutral and not turn at all (or free spin, that is)
05:17 AM veegee: There's a full assembly and parts diagram
05:20 AM veegee: According to the diagram, everything looks correct. None fo the gears are missing
05:21 AM veegee: So I don't understand if this "P" mode is intended to place the lead screw in neutral. If so, how the hell do you drive the leadscrew for regular slow feeding?
05:40 AM veegee: Ugh never mind found it. Damn label on the feed lever was worn off. Didn't see that the apron had a third lever position that had to be operated by pulling the lever outward a bit
05:51 AM JT-Cave: morning
07:42 AM Tom_L: maybe we'll get some sunshine today
07:42 AM Tom_L: hi 69F
07:46 AM JT-Cave: high 65°F mostly cloudy here
09:59 AM _unreal_: damn I'm good https://photos.app.goo.gl/1ejmwQjHGskbBvob9
09:59 AM _unreal_: final renderings. printing now
10:50 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, around?
11:10 AM _unreal_: just posted new photos its all done
11:10 AM _unreal_: that same link
11:10 AM _unreal_: now have my air assist setup and installed with the 3d designed/printed parts
11:12 AM Tom_L: looks good
11:16 AM _unreal_: thank yaa
11:16 AM _unreal_: do you have a 3d printer?
11:16 AM _unreal_: or just mill
11:19 AM Tom_L: no
11:44 AM drdoc: Bleepshop: how big do you need that Casa de Pollos sign?
11:48 AM _unreal_: drdoc, https://photos.app.goo.gl/1ejmwQjHGskbBvob9
11:49 AM Bleepshop: drdoc: I'd have to go measure the window. I've just been dragging in all the plex/lexan scrap I find to get some stock on the shelf as well.
11:50 AM _unreal_: Bleepshop, I'm going to be advertizing and doing laser etching my self soon
11:50 AM _unreal_: o:)
11:50 AM _unreal_: going for the kill shot $ :)
11:50 AM roycroft: you should etch you some dogecoin if you really want the big bucks
11:54 AM davef: Hi, some help please? I installed LinuxCNC 2.8.0 Debian 10 Buster PREEMPT-RT ISO as a guest in VM Virtualbox on Windows 10 Host. Per some instructions, I typed in terminal sudo apt install build-essential dkms linux-headers-s(uname -r)
11:54 AM davef: I get this error: unable to locate package linux-headers-4.19.0-rt-amd64 also couldn't find by glob, regex, etc.
11:57 AM davef: Can't find that package listed anywhere on debian site
12:08 PM Bleepshop: davef: You need the kernel-devel package or somesuch IIRC.
12:10 PM davef: Bleepshop thanks - you mean a different channel to ask re this?
12:11 PM davef: I'm pretty clueless with linux stuff unfortunately.
12:12 PM drdoc: _unreal_: I saw that. Very clean build
12:13 PM _unreal_: if you guys ever need some CAD help let me know :)
12:13 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: I have a surplus teller window in the garage
12:16 PM davef: Trying again with LinuxCNC 2.8.0 Debian 7 Wheezy RTAI - bbl if that doesn't work. Thanks.
12:23 PM _unreal_: teller window?
12:30 PM drdoc: _unreal_: bank teller window
12:31 PM drdoc: not sure whether it's acrylic or PC, but it's a bit over an inch thick
12:35 PM _unreal_: sounds bullet proof
12:51 PM roycroft: it's where his wife goes when she needs some cash
12:52 PM roycroft: and drdoc had better be standing at the window when she approaches, if he knows what's good for him
01:43 PM drdoc: lol
01:44 PM drdoc: too true
02:40 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Failing anything else I've got a 36"x48" chunk of 10mm Lexan I was saving for a scatter shield that I can cut and mill.
02:51 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, what command did you use to register?
02:51 PM Tom_L: i didn't see it
02:52 PM skunkworks: /msg NickServ REGISTER YourPassword youremail@example.com
02:52 PM Tom_L: same then
02:52 PM roycroft: is this on the new network?
02:52 PM skunkworks: yes
02:53 PM roycroft: and is the problem that you did not receive the confirmation email?
02:53 PM skunkworks: I didn't have any problems
02:53 PM roycroft: oh
02:53 PM roycroft: never mind
02:53 PM skunkworks: just worked tm
02:53 PM roycroft: it appeared from wha tom_l was saying that you were having problems registering
02:53 PM Tom_L: sorry i brought it up here
02:54 PM roycroft: no worries
02:54 PM skunkworks: lol
02:54 PM roycroft: i was going to try to help
02:54 PM Tom_L: they wanted the bot
02:54 PM skunkworks: I was just suprised that the name wasn't taken
02:54 PM skunkworks: *my name
02:55 PM Tom_L: that was easy
02:56 PM Tom_L: who would wanna be a skunk?
02:56 PM roycroft: it's a fairly small userbase there the last time i checked, and i should imagine that most folks going from here to there would register the same nick
02:56 PM skunkworks: you would be suprised how often that name is already used..
02:56 PM Tom_L: i suppose
02:57 PM Tom_L: why the re'post on the plasma to yt?
02:57 PM Tom_L: did you add something?
02:57 PM * roycroft needs to cut the grass before his neighbors hate him even more
02:57 PM Tom_L: been there done that
02:57 PM Tom_L: washed one vehicle 3 to go
02:57 PM roycroft: three times in the last week i carved out the time to do that
02:57 PM roycroft: all three times it rained
02:57 PM Tom_L: it's sure to rain here now
02:58 PM roycroft: but it appears that the rain is done for the indefinite future
02:58 PM roycroft: sunny every day for the next couple weeks, and highs in the mid-30s
03:01 PM roycroft: i'm removing the tarnish from some brass fasteners, and i want to slow down the tarnishing process, but don't want to spray them with lacquer or polyurethane
03:01 PM roycroft: is there some other coating that works well?
03:02 PM roycroft: carnauba wax? starrett tool oil?
03:02 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: it was never public.
04:07 PM Tom_L: oh, i just couldn't figure out why it reappeared on my list
05:22 PM roycroft: well the grass is cut in the front, and i even did the weedeating, so i probably won't get my house burned down this weekend
05:42 PM unterhaus_: roycroft: your HOA is hard line about yard maintenance
05:44 PM unterhaus_: whenever I move somewhere one of the criteria is that there is someone else in the neighborhood that does a worse job of maintaining the yard than I do
05:46 PM roycroft: there is no hoa here
05:46 PM roycroft: however, i am an island of hippie living in a vast sea of maga
05:46 PM roycroft: there are only three of my neighbors who will talk to me
05:46 PM roycroft: several yell and curse at me whenever they get the chance
05:47 PM roycroft: and a couple have not said a single word to me in the over 20 years that i've lived here, even though i've greeted them repeatedly with a smile
05:54 PM roycroft: and there are others who maintain their yard more poorly than i do
05:54 PM roycroft: i don't let it get out of hand, but i also don't mow twice/week like some of the neighbors
05:55 PM roycroft: the yard is not the reason for them to hate on me - it's the excuse
06:14 PM Tom_L: well i did the yard 2x this week
06:14 PM Tom_L: does that make me a bad person?
06:16 PM roycroft: but like i said, my mowing habits are an excuse, not a reason, for some of my neighbors to hate on me
06:20 PM roycroft: what a pain in the butt
06:20 PM roycroft: windows 10 struck again
06:21 PM roycroft: it filled up my virtual c: drive on my autocad virtual machine
06:21 PM roycroft: with its updates
06:21 PM roycroft: that i keep telling it not to do, and it keeps ignoring me after a while
06:21 PM roycroft: so i had to expand the virtual disk, which breaks the autocad license
06:23 PM roycroft: so i had to go grab a copy of the old windows xp virtual machine on which i originally installed it, clone the windows 10 vm, export the license from the clone, import the license on the xp machine, then expand the virtual disk on the cloned windows 10 vm, export the license from xp, and import it onto the win10 clone
06:23 PM roycroft: i had to do the cloning because sometimes the portable license utility does not work right
06:24 PM roycroft: autodesk started an online license verification system with autocad 2010
06:24 PM veegee: I pirate them all
06:24 PM veegee: successfully
06:24 PM * roycroft wonders if, at some point, he should just pony up the money for a new version
06:25 PM roycroft: i'm not in the mood to be trolled by you today, veegee, so don't bother
06:25 PM veegee: Use little snitch on Mac OS to block their internet connection
06:25 PM roycroft: this is the only response you'll get from me on that subject
06:25 PM veegee: I'm not, I'm being serious
06:26 PM * roycroft refers veegee to the comments he made some moments ago
06:26 PM Tom_L: i got a copy of win10 pro still in the shrinkwrap
06:26 PM veegee: In any case, I just scored a great deal on a surface grinder + tool and die grinder from a friend of a friend
06:26 PM roycroft: the problem i had is that autocad would crash when the disk filled up
06:26 PM veegee: Exactly what I was looking for
06:26 PM roycroft: from its temporary files
06:27 PM roycroft: i save often, but not always often enough
06:27 PM roycroft: i don't save my cad drawings on the virtual machines at all - they are stored on network shares
06:27 PM roycroft: so i'm not concerned about losing drawings, but i have lost changes when it crashes before i get a chance to do a save
06:28 PM roycroft: but now that vm has 70GB of free space on the c: drive
06:28 PM roycroft: it should be a while before i run out of virtual disk again
06:28 PM Tom_L: was gonna put it on a pc for her but hers has home? on it and seems ok to her
06:28 PM Tom_L: so one day far far away maybe i'll install it on a ssd all by itself
06:28 PM roycroft: pro has better networking support and has remote management via vnc
06:28 PM roycroft: home doesn't have that stuff
06:29 PM Tom_L: i doubt she knows the difference
06:29 PM roycroft: no, but if you have to help her with the machine, the remote management capability might be useful at times
06:29 PM roycroft: unless you and she share an office
06:30 PM Tom_L: i get to play tech for all of them here
06:30 PM roycroft: from an end user point of view, windows home and windows pro are not much different
06:30 PM Tom_L: i figured as much
06:30 PM roycroft: but from an admistrator's point of view, windows home is absoultely horrible, while windows pro is just extremely annoying
06:33 PM roycroft: and windows 10 just installed updates against my command not to, rebooted, and now is fscking
06:33 PM roycroft: so autocad is probably going to break again
06:33 PM Tom_L: libera emailed me
06:34 PM roycroft: and i'll have to do the cloning/license shuffle again
06:34 PM roycroft: did they have nice things to say to you?
06:34 PM Tom_L: dunno, i got as far as 'paste this line' and quit reading
06:35 PM roycroft: oh wow
06:35 PM roycroft: autocad did not break
06:35 PM roycroft: but windows wants to do more updates
06:36 PM roycroft: why can't it do it all its business at once?
06:36 PM roycroft: it's as annoying as a dog
06:36 PM roycroft: you take a dog for a walk, the dog shits
06:36 PM roycroft: you scoop it up
06:36 PM roycroft: you go down the block
06:36 PM roycroft: the dog shits again
06:36 PM roycroft: you have to scoop it up again
06:36 PM roycroft: dogs never do all their business at once
06:36 PM roycroft: they stretch it out
06:37 PM roycroft: windows updates are exactly like that
06:38 PM * roycroft is an hour into wanting to just do a simple drawing, and still cannot load autocad and do his thing
06:40 PM roycroft: i swear, i spend more time doing windows updates than using windows any more
06:41 PM Tom_L: heh
06:52 PM roycroft: oh for christ's sake
06:52 PM roycroft: it's done with the security updates, rebooted, and now wants to do some feature updates
06:52 PM Tom_L: well of course!
06:53 PM roycroft: s/wants to do/insists on doing/
06:53 PM Tom_L: told you it's going to no matter what?
06:53 PM roycroft: yes
06:53 PM roycroft: it's just doing it
06:53 PM Tom_L: sm nike
06:54 PM roycroft: i'm wanting to finish this drawing because i found 2 sheets of 3/4" mdf at a local store today, and i'm not sure i can do my project with 1 sheet
06:55 PM roycroft: i don't want to store a second sheet if i don't need it
06:55 PM Tom_L: so you're not doing the one for the boss....
06:55 PM Tom_L: i'm soooo disapointed..
06:55 PM roycroft: they'll probably both be sold before i can finish the drawing and cut sheet
06:55 PM roycroft: no, i am not doing that job
06:55 PM roycroft: and if you think you're disappointed, consider my boss
06:55 PM Tom_L: hah
06:55 PM roycroft: he's *soooo* disappointed that he can't get some free money
06:57 PM Tom_L: supposedly my mill holders will be here Tues
06:57 PM Tom_L: i'm not holding my breath on that one
06:57 PM Tom_L: from Ca? please
07:02 PM roycroft: california is ususally 1-2 days from me, unless my stuff goes up to visit seattle first
07:40 PM roycroft: windows appears to finally be done with its forced updates
07:40 PM roycroft: windows is still activated
07:40 PM roycroft: autocad is still licensed
07:40 PM roycroft: i might actually be able to get something accomplished this afternoon
08:07 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, around?
08:08 PM Tom_L: ahh nevermind i see what's going on
