12:16 AM CaptHindsight: pm java crap
12:44 AM roycroft: i had forgotten how great that film is - i hadn't seen it in probably 30 years before now
12:45 AM roycroft: bogart played the best insane bad guy ever, in films like this and like the caine mutiny
01:14 AM Deejay: moin
03:18 AM James is now known as Guest26595
04:28 AM Tom_L: morning
04:28 AM XXCoder: yo
05:21 AM Loetmichel: grmbl. Made 12 10" display stacks with panel, shielding glass, touch glass... assebled the monitors... got some dust between the layers. Boss ordered coworker to clean that up... now its less dust but 5 panels have scratches and anther 4 fingerprints... "verschlimmbessert" we say in german :(
05:21 AM XXCoder: hey did you see about move loet? wasnt sure you saw it lol
05:22 AM Loetmichel: ... and i have no spare panels. :(
05:22 AM XXCoder: cant polish em out?
05:22 AM Loetmichel: i saw but ignored it
05:22 AM Loetmichel: nah, those are matte TFTs
05:22 AM XXCoder: sigh
05:25 AM XXCoder: how unique is that tft anyway
05:25 AM XXCoder: is it only for that specific job, or many of em use em
05:27 AM Loetmichel: its a part that has to stay the same for the entire series or the cert will expire. cant use a different one.
05:28 AM XXCoder: well i was wondering if its not unique to that jobs, can use less than sellar quality ones for something else
06:13 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:34 AM XXCoder: yo
06:54 AM JT-Cave: 6.5 hour drive today
07:00 AM JT-Cave: geez spammers on the forum are really active
07:44 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, have a good trip
07:47 AM Loetmichel: *grmbl* having 4 ender3 3d-printers at the company... still have to use my private Anet A8 to print stuff for customer devices because coworker has 3 enders printing with HIS oder and the fourth dismantled for maintenance... The things you do... :(
07:47 AM Tom_L: have to is subjective
07:48 AM Loetmichel: ... at least i am using company filament :)
07:48 AM XXCoder: worker is keeping 3 critical machines busy for himself rather than fpor company?
07:48 AM XXCoder: or am i misreading?
07:49 AM Loetmichel: nah, company orders, too. still frustrating
07:49 AM XXCoder: ok
07:49 AM Tom_L: aparently you need more of them
07:49 AM XXCoder: sounds like need to order some more
07:49 AM Loetmichel: yep, sounds like it
07:49 AM Tom_L: so he can do his peronal stuff too
07:49 AM Loetmichel: should make another rack with another four
08:18 AM JT-Shop: dammit stamps program is broken and I have packages to ship
09:48 AM Loetmichel: *haaarrrummmph* Coworker finished the maintenance on the fourth printer... plugged it in... 3 seconds later: aaand its printing his works orders, too. :(
10:03 AM Tom_L: you gotta be quicker than that
10:06 AM rs[m]: did anybody use HackerCAD? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NdUf9BO_pg
10:06 AM Tom_L: not heard of it.. sounds like a hack job :D
10:07 AM rs[m]: https://github.com/adamLange/HackerCAD
10:07 AM rs[m]: AFAIU it embeds OpenCascade in a jupyter notebook
10:07 AM rs[m]: sounds fun
10:09 AM Tom_L: what about post? one for lcnc or easy to make one?
10:13 AM rs[m]: no idea, I'm just watching the video
10:14 AM Tom_L: lots of air time you don't want on a surface
10:15 AM Tom_L: but at least it _is_ 3d
10:15 AM Tom_L: cutting air makes $0.00
10:15 AM rs[m]: https://youtu.be/1NdUf9BO_pg?t=423 "In hindsight I would have used a profile operation because this cuts air a lot"
10:16 AM rs[m]: he claims this can generate 5 axis toolpaths
10:17 AM Tom_L: if i'm doing a one off i don't care but if i plan to run a few i make sure to optimize the cuts
10:17 AM Tom_L: i claim to own some beachfront property in Arizona i'd love to sell you too
10:18 AM Tom_L: with 3+ axis you _need_ gouge detection
10:18 AM Tom_L: dunno if that does it
10:18 AM Tom_L: invariably, the programmer will miss a clamp
10:19 AM Tom_L: unfortunately, the machine won't
10:20 AM * JT-Cave finishes lunch and goes to pack the car for the trip
10:20 AM Tom_L: man, i thought you were gone already
10:20 AM JT-Cave: see you in Marshall Tx
10:20 AM Tom_L: have fun
10:20 AM JT-Cave: I wish
10:21 AM JT-Cave: crap I'm forgetting something but can't remember what it was
10:21 AM Tom_L: you'll remember in ~30 min on the road
10:21 AM Tom_L: btw i left the light on, sink running, door open....
10:22 AM Tom_L: kids today have an app for that :)
10:34 AM drdoc: Loetmichel: I have some mod designs for that Anet
10:34 AM drdoc: was my first 3D printer
10:44 AM rs[m]: Tom_L: seems HackerCAD uses a 5 axis inverse kinematics module written in modelica
10:45 AM rs[m]: but this really is just a hack
10:45 AM rs[m]: https://hackaday.io/project/169499-solving-inverse-kinematics-with-modelica
12:12 PM veegee: I just got stung by a wasp
12:12 PM veegee: on my finger
12:17 PM Vq: Ouch
12:18 PM Vq: Last time that happened to me my hand got pretty swollen.
12:22 PM veegee: yeah constant burn and throbbing
12:22 PM veegee: Two uses for a vacuum pump: try to suck some of the poison out
12:22 PM veegee: Then catch the fucking thing and put it in the vacuum chamber and kill it slowly
12:23 PM veegee: savouring every second of its agony
12:23 PM veegee: It's not going to be happy at 2 pascals absolute pressure
12:39 PM Vq: :/
12:48 PM roycroft: so the new network never sent my nick registration confirmation email, and my registration timed out
12:48 PM roycroft: i reregistered the nick, but i have not received the email yet
12:48 PM roycroft: i'd appreciate it if whover runs #linuxcnc there does not restrict voice to registered users while this is being sorted
12:49 PM roycroft: not that there's any real discussion there at this point
12:49 PM Tom_L: what new network?
12:50 PM Tom_L: there were gunshots heard so everyone scattered
12:51 PM Tom_L: matrix with the riot client?
12:51 PM roycroft: libera.chat
12:51 PM Vq: roycroft: It was XXCoder I think
12:51 PM roycroft: i don't know anything about a matrix network
12:52 PM roycroft: does one have to choose a blue pill or a red pill to join it?
12:52 PM Tom_L: both but i forget which order to take them
12:53 PM roycroft: if you take them in one order you're screwed
12:53 PM Tom_L: https://riot.im/app/
12:53 PM roycroft: and if you take them in the other order then screw yout
12:53 PM roycroft: you
12:53 PM * roycroft will pass on a web-based chat system
12:54 PM Tom_L: they've been using it for the qtpyvcp developement too
12:55 PM Tom_L: https://gist.github.com/fstab/ce805d3001600ac147b79d413668770d
12:56 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure that works now
01:13 PM Loetmichel: *grmbl* Reddit... Write an 31k chars Fantasy story, post in the approbiate sub: 41 upvotes in three days. Post a oneliner comment under someone elses story: 120 upvotes in less than an hour. *sigh* :(
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://riot.im/app/#/room/#LCNC:matrix.org
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: or
01:43 PM CaptHindsight: https://discord.gg/X3zKzhc
01:44 PM CaptHindsight: working on bridging the two services
01:48 PM drdoc: duuuuuuude
01:48 PM drdoc: talk about a barn find....
01:48 PM drdoc: https://texas.hibid.com/lot/90903899
01:50 PM CaptHindsight: heh makes it easier to restore
01:51 PM drdoc: that's already been restored once, is my guess
01:51 PM CaptHindsight: at this ago though you see how polymers break down mostly to oxidation
01:51 PM drdoc: or was in process
01:51 PM CaptHindsight: wasn't a big Mopar fan, did they use lacquers or enamels back then?
01:52 PM drdoc: mostly enamels, I believe
01:53 PM CaptHindsight: '73 the last year before smog engines
01:54 PM drdoc: I expect that'll bring at least $15k, maybe quite a lot more than that
01:54 PM veegee: CaptHindsight how's your dyno project going
01:54 PM veegee: Did you decide on hydraulic vs electric?
01:54 PM drdoc: if that motor even turns it's worth $2500
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: you are supposed to be looking for parts!
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: it's on the project list, today is final sanding and masking for exterior surfaces
01:56 PM veegee: CaptHindsight cheapo hydraulic gear pump, pressure gauge, flow meter, oil cooler
01:56 PM veegee: that's all you need
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: nah, tractor pull
02:05 PM CaptHindsight: 1,000 chickens in a harness, and NIST traceable bungee cord + tape measure and tachometer
02:30 PM _methods: chicken power to horsepower conversion table?
02:31 PM _methods: and google has the answer
02:31 PM _methods: 7000 chickens = 1 horse
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: last week frost, today 30C
02:36 PM _methods: yoikes
02:36 PM CaptHindsight: have to use the high temp reducers
02:37 PM _methods: simmer down now
02:37 PM CaptHindsight: Fabtech is on for the fall, in person
02:38 PM CaptHindsight: Sept. 13-16, 2021 at McCormick Place
02:39 PM CaptHindsight: i was sick just after the last one
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: https://i.imgur.com/wzV3l4z.jpg $300 barn find, '85
02:44 PM CaptHindsight: every hose and rubber part has decayed
02:46 PM roycroft: and being an '85, it has that early 2 part water-based paint job
02:46 PM roycroft: i just did a glue-up in my vacuum bag for the first time since i did the compressor maintenance
02:47 PM roycroft: i can pull 0.85 bars of vacuum now, and it holds
02:47 PM roycroft: the compressor does not cycle at all
02:47 PM roycroft: before the maintenace, i'd get about 0.7 bars
02:47 PM roycroft: and the compressor would cycle every couple minutes
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: https://imgur.com/wlQWbZx paint comes off in a week or two
05:10 PM unreal is now known as _urneal_
05:11 PM _urneal_ is now known as _unreal_
05:19 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
07:06 PM roycroft: so apparently i cannot register my nick on libera.chat, because they are using an isp that hosts spammers and is blacklisted by my anti-spam service
07:06 PM roycroft: so i cannot receive the registration confirmation email
07:07 PM roycroft: it's not libera.chat who are considered spammers - it's their isp
07:07 PM roycroft: the entire asn is blacklisted
07:09 PM Tom_L: don't join it
07:11 PM Tom_L: refining my post a little this evening
07:15 PM Roguish: roycroft, Tom_L hey, hope you guys don't mind, but I'm watching your posts to follow the rumble....and let us all know what to do.
07:15 PM roycroft: very few folks have gone over there so far
07:16 PM roycroft: from this channel, that is
07:16 PM Tom_L: i joined but left that server
07:16 PM Tom_L: i also joined matrix #linuxcnc #linuxcnc-dev
07:16 PM Tom_L: but i'd already installed riot for qtpyvcp there
07:16 PM Tom_L: otherwise i may not have bothered
07:33 PM Roguish: good night all. ttfn
07:34 PM XXCoder: roycroft: depends on which channel
07:34 PM XXCoder: reprap have mostly moved over

08:43 PM drdoc: For Those Who Care:
08:43 PM drdoc: looks like I'm keeping both of 'em.
08:43 PM drdoc: benign "unremarkable cyst", no treatment recommended
08:44 PM drdoc: that feels like a good result to me
08:45 PM XXCoder: whew
08:48 PM roycroft: excellent news
08:50 PM jthornton: yo
08:51 PM jthornton: from Marshall TX
08:51 PM jthornton: finally got on here...
08:51 PM Tom_L: yo yo
08:51 PM XXCoder: hey hey future texan
08:52 PM Tom_L: you're lucky we didn't all leave the channel and move to another :)
08:52 PM XXCoder: hes there already tom
08:52 PM Tom_L: i know
08:52 PM Tom_L: just saying...
08:53 PM XXCoder: lol
08:54 PM jthornton: I booted to linux but could not speak so must have something wrong
08:56 PM jthornton: texas has no fear of me moving here
08:56 PM Tom_L: their drivers have no fear for sure
08:56 PM jthornton: I would have followed the bread crumbs anyway
08:57 PM jthornton: I30 from Little Rock to Texarkana was the worst part
08:57 PM jthornton: kinda strange going 80 MPH down a road with driveways every 100 yards or so
08:58 PM Tom_L: i sat outside Little Rock on the highway for an hour once waiting on construction
08:58 PM Tom_L: this time it was closer to Atlanta and that was over an hour
08:58 PM jthornton: they are still working on it lol
08:58 PM Tom_L: job security
08:59 PM Tom_L: luckily we had prime or something and watched a couple shows on the phone while waiting
08:59 PM jthornton: didn't see very much work going on
09:01 PM XXCoder: jthornton: when I5 build here is done, my nephew will be 60 year old with kids and grandkiss
09:01 PM XXCoder: grandkids
09:01 PM jthornton: damn
09:03 PM XXCoder: in least thats what I assume heh
09:03 PM XXCoder: im been here 10 years by now.
09:03 PM XXCoder: well bit less
09:03 PM XXCoder: i5 here never have been not in construction
09:03 PM XXCoder: old I5 wasnt routed well, and had zero growth possibilites
09:03 PM jthornton: bad ground?
09:03 PM XXCoder: so its taking a long time to upgrade
09:03 PM jthornton: ah
09:03 PM XXCoder: nah old city
09:04 PM XXCoder: tacoma is one of oldest cities here. only Vancouver is older.
09:04 PM jthornton: still have wooden water mains like New York?
09:04 PM XXCoder: theres forts of vancouver and tacoma, then fort of vancouver #2
09:05 PM XXCoder: nah we had better stuff by then
09:05 PM XXCoder: first fort vancouver didnt last long, it got burnt down then they moved it nearer to river
09:05 PM XXCoder: site of first one is now WSD, washington school for deaf
09:06 PM XXCoder: each time they dig up they find stuff
09:09 PM jthornton: cool
09:10 PM XXCoder: yeah. second fort vancouver they are recreating as best as they can
09:10 PM XXCoder: its half complete
09:10 PM jthornton: internet is so fast here compared to home
09:11 PM XXCoder: i toured it. nice
09:11 PM Tom_L: hah
09:11 PM Tom_L: are you on cable?
09:11 PM jthornton: here no clue
09:11 PM XXCoder: lol dont get used it or you'll move to texas on that basis ;)
09:11 PM jthornton: XXCoder, I have way too much crap to ever move again
09:12 PM XXCoder: lol indeed
09:12 PM XXCoder: last move was hard :(
09:12 PM XXCoder: i hope we never move, ever. or ill just burn everything down so i dont have to move em
09:12 PM XXCoder: ;)
09:12 PM XXCoder: honestly yeah dont want to move again ever
09:12 PM jthornton: lol
09:14 PM jthornton: after my partner passed and I move all of J&J Automations stuff to my house I've been sorting and filing and tossing for years and not done yet
09:14 PM jthornton: hmm missing d
09:14 PM jdh: I want to move, but I don't want to take 95% of my stuff with me
09:16 PM Tom_L: so these are the ones i was supposed to get they tell me: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/ZRN_Alum_3flute2.jpg
09:16 PM Tom_L: aparently those others were meant for SS but seemed to work great to me
09:17 PM Tom_L: still a higher helix than the ones i get locally
09:17 PM jthornton: those look similar to what I use
09:17 PM XXCoder: looks like regular coated tc to m
09:18 PM Tom_L: the coating on the others contains aluminum which is why not to use them on aluminum
09:18 PM Tom_L: without coolant they will clog up
09:18 PM XXCoder: maybe bit long. good for milling taller parts
09:18 PM Tom_L: 2" oal i think
09:19 PM jthornton: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/51-ot-posts/42570-3d-printers-and-stuff-related-to-them-or-made-on-them#209721
09:19 PM jthornton: pretty good looking prints
09:20 PM XXCoder: little bit better than my prusa
09:20 PM Tom_L: nice
09:20 PM jthornton: better than my ender for sure
09:27 PM veegee: Can LinuxCNC do compensation for missed steps if I have a stepper with encoder?
09:27 PM veegee: I'm deciding between a regular stepper driver or a closed loop driver that has the encoder inputs
09:28 PM veegee: I'll be getting a mesa card either way
09:33 PM jthornton: steppers with encoders is usually a stepper/drive relation while servo/encoder is typical for go faster your behind
09:33 PM roycroft: best to not miss steps
09:34 PM Tom_L: i wonder if the stepper would flutter if the encoder didn't land exactly on a step
09:37 PM veegee: My question is, can LinuxCNC + mesa card do the closed loop control?
09:37 PM veegee: Or do I need to get a stepper driver that has encoder inputs so it handles the PID control on its own?
09:37 PM Tom_L: i can't see why not
09:38 PM veegee: Look at this monster stepper: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/nema-42/nema42-hybrid-stepper-motor-4230-oz-kl42h2201-80-4a
09:38 PM Tom_L: position based instead of velocity
09:38 PM veegee: Yeah I only care about step/dir position based
09:39 PM Tom_L: don't drop it on your toe
09:39 PM veegee: My only concern with steppers is huge torque losses at higher speeds, but I guess that doesn't matter for rapids
09:39 PM veegee: I can get 3 axis big steppers + drivers for < $900 USD
09:40 PM Tom_L: what are you trying to move with that?
09:40 PM veegee: First project is a bridgeport clone mill
09:40 PM veegee: Alternatively, I'm looking at this: https://www.teknic.com/model-info/CPM-SDSK-3441S-RLN/?model_voltage=75VDC
09:40 PM veegee: Or this: https://www.automationtechnologiesinc.com/products-page/ac-servo-motors/ac-servo-motor-kits-750w-220vac
09:40 PM veegee: teknic obviously has good docs and specs but much more expensive
09:41 PM veegee: If I go with either of the servos, I'm pretty sure I'll need belt drive 2:1 reduction because they're high speed low torque. But their torque curve should be much more consistent than any stepper
09:42 PM veegee: With the steppers, I can just do direct drive
09:43 PM veegee: I think I need to calculate some speeds and table force requirements before I make a final decision
09:44 PM veegee: The 8 N•m peak torque servo (last link above) is what I'm leaning towards. It's the same one that thisoldtony used for his Maho CNC conversion
09:44 PM veegee: He seemed to be doing direct drive and it worked fine and his mill is heavier than my bridgeport clone
09:45 PM veegee: But I also have a 5,500 lb universal mill begging for a CNC conversion. That thing is built to go slow and very heavy cuts so I'll need to buy a different system for it anyway
09:45 PM veegee: For the lathe, _anything_ will work. Leaning towards steppers since feed rate is very low
10:07 PM _unreal_: a freaking week and a half BUT FINALLY ITS DONE
10:08 PM _unreal_: I installed the latested version of ESTLcam and what ever "upgrades" the MFG made. really fucked it up
10:08 PM _unreal_: the output files are totally botched
10:08 PM _unreal_: as far as dimensions go
10:57 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:47 PM Bleepshop: veegee: I've got 4:1 belt drives on my X / Y and I'm looking at throwing quadrature encoders at them to read the movements and close the loop.
11:51 PM Bleepshop: I've got a set of PostScript files somewhere to generate pretty much any type of encoder wheel to engrave or laser print on transparency film.
