12:01 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c8Ta7Iqf5o yet another project that used Marlin vs LCNC
12:08 AM CaptHindsight: and then wrote a GUI :)
12:08 AM XXCoder: 3d printed machine
12:08 AM XXCoder: cool
12:08 AM CaptHindsight: wow, really you too eh
12:08 AM XXCoder: whats that one use anyway
12:08 AM XXCoder: lcnc or reprap crap board
12:08 AM CaptHindsight: marlin on something duino-ish
12:08 AM XXCoder: hmm ok
12:08 AM XXCoder: its easy to do i guess even if not perfect
12:08 AM CaptHindsight: yeah like making car from wood
12:08 AM XXCoder: lol i saw wood cars. amazing
05:46 AM jthornton: morning
08:39 AM philipp77: hello
08:39 AM philipp77: excuse me, I need some help. On a simple xyz diy cnc i would like to use the same pin on the parallel port adapter (pin12) as x and z endstop/limit. so two switches (one on x, one on z), normally closed in serial to make the wiring easier. homing x without having homing setup on z works, but when I connect pin12 again in the hal file to the z it
08:39 AM philipp77: gives an error. what should i google for to find an answer, is there an easier way that using lut5 ?
09:00 AM jthornton: you can only connect a pin once, use the signal
09:01 AM jthornton: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/hal/basic-hal.html#_net
09:02 AM jthornton: philipp77, ^^
09:03 AM philipp77: thank you very much, I will look at it!
09:39 AM JT-Shop: wow the tacho assembly for my servo is $423
09:41 AM skunkworks: heh the servos we put on the k&t had expensive tachs
09:42 AM skunkworks: I think we bough one as one was bad.. But then one of the others went bad. We ended up using the encoder velocity back to the amp from the mesa card.
09:42 AM skunkworks: bought
09:45 AM JT-Shop: that's what Peter suggested and it's sounding better and better
09:49 AM skunkworks: are you converting this machine?
10:02 AM unterhaus: JT-Shop, what kind of tacho? I have some hitachi motors with tachs that I could probably spare
10:31 AM veegee: enleth did you mean to say "steppers" instead?
10:32 AM veegee: Because for the SD series is designed to look like a stepper
10:32 AM veegee: But I'm not sure if the MC series is "better", or if LinuxCNC can make better use of them: https://www.teknic.com/products/clearpath-brushless-dc-servo-motors/clearpath-mc/
10:33 AM veegee: the SD series just has step/direction inputs. The MC series has more complicated control
10:48 AM veegee: Never mind that, just realized this is the way to go: https://www.teknic.com/products/clearpath-brushless-dc-servo-motors/clearpath-sc/ Can also run in step/direction mode
10:56 AM enleth: veegee: no, I meant quote-servos-unquote as not-really-servos
11:06 AM veegee: well either way, that's the idea
11:21 AM jthornton: unterhaus, the Anilam servos are SEM
11:43 AM veegee: AWWWWWWWW SNAP! My *N** carbide insert tools arrived today
11:43 AM veegee: now I can make use of both sides of the insert
11:58 AM roycroft: well, the youtube woes are getting worse
11:58 AM roycroft: youtube is now giving me an error on every video, saying i must disable ad blockers
11:58 AM roycroft: and both of my youtube downloaders no longer work
12:02 PM veegee: roycroft youtube-dl works just fine for me
12:02 PM veegee: I just tested
12:03 PM veegee: And ublock origin doesn't cause any trouble
12:04 PM veegee: test video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWe1hfQUdb4
12:04 PM roycroft: there's no native macos version of that
12:04 PM veegee: youtube-dl?
12:04 PM roycroft: and i avoid brew/macports because they make such huge messes
12:04 PM roycroft: yes
12:04 PM veegee: it's written in python
12:04 PM veegee: just pip install it
12:04 PM veegee: and brew doesn't make any kind of mess
12:04 PM veegee: it's actually quite tidy
12:04 PM JT-Shop: putube downloaders have been broken for some time for me
12:04 PM veegee: It symlinks everything into /usr/local
12:05 PM veegee: guys what the hell kind of downloaders are you using?
12:05 PM roycroft: i haven't installed brew in a long time, but i remember it was a nightmare - a lot of stuff broke after i installed it
12:05 PM veegee: why would you use anything else when youtube-dl exists?
12:05 PM veegee: `pip install youtube-dl`, done
12:06 PM roycroft: because you are not the only person in the universe with clue, and because the way you do things is not necessarily the only way to do things
12:06 PM roycroft: just because your mind is tiny and narrow does not make everyone else wrong
12:07 PM veegee: in this case, if you're using anything else except for youtube-dl, you're doing it wrong
12:07 PM veegee: You presented a problem, I presented a solution with no downsides
12:07 PM * roycroft refers veegee to the comments he made some moments ago
12:07 PM roycroft: "i like to use youtube-dl" is a valid response
12:07 PM roycroft: "if you're using anything else except for youtube-dl you're doing it wrong" is a bullshit answer
12:08 PM roycroft: and you know that
12:08 PM roycroft: if you don't then you're a moron
12:08 PM veegee: In this particular case, I disagree
12:08 PM Rab: Youtubedown is great. Never needed to fall back to youtube-dl, which might also be great. https://www.jwz.org/hacks/youtubedown
12:08 PM roycroft: i'll not belabor my point - i think i've been clear enough
12:08 PM roycroft: i'll move on to find something else
12:08 PM veegee: It has the most man hours put into it
12:08 PM veegee: That's why it almost never fails
12:09 PM veegee: If youtube updates their code, someone will patch it within minutes
12:09 PM roycroft: probably avoiding youtube-dl on the principle that i was informed that it is the only solution
12:09 PM Rab: Wait, what kind of heuristic is that
12:09 PM veegee: Rab which one?
12:10 PM Rab: I have encountered failure-prone software with a whole lot of man-hours invested in it.
12:10 PM veegee: roycroft your loss
12:10 PM roycroft: youtubedown is written in a write-only language
12:10 PM veegee: Rab ok man hours maybe not a good metric
12:10 PM roycroft: that makes me dubious already, but i'll still give it a go :)
12:10 PM veegee: but a downloader is relatively simple, the biggest failure point is when the target site makes changes to their frontend code
12:11 PM roycroft: windows probably has more coder hours than any other piece of sofware in the universe
12:11 PM veegee: ok, like I said, not a great metric. But the attention it gets in this case is very good for its reliability
12:13 PM veegee: roycroft I'm feeling generous, so when you're done with your toddler tantrum, use this: https://pastebin.com/XXMZj62p
12:14 PM * roycroft refers veegee to the comments he made some moments ago
12:14 PM * Rab furiously pasting, joining veegee botnet
12:14 PM veegee: I don't have a botnet :(
12:14 PM veegee: It's just a bunch of options for invoking youtube-dl to tell it to fetch the highest quality and use ffmpeg to encode
12:15 PM veegee: sorry for trying to help
12:17 PM roycroft: if you're truly trying to help then use language that does not create discord
12:17 PM roycroft: i don't see that happening, so don't bother "trying to help" me in the future
12:34 PM Bleepshop: Is there an updated version of this page/list? I'm looking for CAD/CAM software for linux as I've blown past the limitations of CamBam and need something that I can extend. http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Cam
01:57 PM roycroft: but my concern is that if i'm squirting acetone on mdf it's not going to go very well
01:58 PM roycroft: i really hope that i don't have to change abrasives often on this sander
01:58 PM roycroft: like 2x/year is the most i want to do it
01:58 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: I'll soak the finished disc with fiberglass resin and then do a final sander pass to level it.
01:58 PM roycroft: and if i need multiple grits i know already that i'll need multiple sanders
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: if you coat the disc in teflon the adhesive will come off easier
01:59 PM roycroft: the motor is very quite and it runs very smoothly
01:59 PM roycroft: and the cast iron table isn't horrible
01:59 PM unterhaus: I wanted to clean the shop so of course the first thing is to open up the ceiling so I can insulate the rim joist
01:59 PM roycroft: if i can get rid of the runout i think i'll be happy with the machine
01:59 PM CaptHindsight: i think you are supposed to lower your standards
02:00 PM roycroft: that's now how i go, unfortunately
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: "you buy now"
02:00 PM roycroft: as an engineer, my standards are based on what works for the application, not what's available
02:01 PM CaptHindsight: I asked a Chinese supplier wich modfel works better for a given application, they would never answer the question
02:01 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: Glue on some 80 grit and measure your runout. ;D
02:01 PM CaptHindsight: modfel/model
02:01 PM unterhaus: As a sometimes precision engineer, I try not to apply too much engineering to my home projects
02:02 PM unterhaus: except maybe in the UK sense of "engineer"
02:02 PM roycroft: send me a sacrificial dial indicator and i'll do that, bleepshop
02:03 PM Bleepshop: I'm more of a "If you don't like the protruding bolt here's a hacksaw and a file." type of engineer. LOL
02:05 PM roycroft: well i need to make some semi-precise parts and this is an essential tool for my workflow
02:05 PM JT-Shop: at menards none of the lumber outside has any prices on it, inside the most expensive piece of plywood was $108 for 3/4" marine grade
02:06 PM roycroft: in this day and age, that's actually not too bad, jt-shop
02:07 PM roycroft: i recently paid $60 for a 5x5 sheet of 18mm baltic birch ply, and that was on my business account
02:07 PM roycroft: it was probably more like $80 retail
02:07 PM roycroft: it was $40 a year ago
02:07 PM Bleepshop: JT-Shop: Yeah, I've been noticing that the prices on the shelves at the hardware stores and lumber yards are 10%-20% lower that what the register wants to charge.
02:07 PM roycroft: that's illegal, bleepshop
02:07 PM roycroft: it's a federal law in the united states, so it's illegal in every state
02:08 PM roycroft: you pay the price that's marked
02:08 PM roycroft: not what the register decides to charge
02:08 PM roycroft: unless the register decides to charge less
02:09 PM Bleepshop: Oh, I know, they know, I started taking pictures of the tags just to speed up the disputes, but a lot of people aren't paying attention and will just pay the total.
02:13 PM Bleepshop: And then there's the utterly ridiculous pricing of PVC/ABS parts in general. a 2" flat-cap is $5 or a 2" cleanout adapter with the cap is $3 and a 2" coupler is $1. Which way do you think I capped 2 chicken feeders that my old lady wanted? LOL
02:22 PM JT-Shop: titanium is cheaper
02:23 PM JT-Shop: you have one of those tube with elbow feeders?
02:25 PM Tom_L: yay
02:25 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop ?
02:37 PM roycroft: there is a new version of adblock
02:37 PM roycroft: i'm installing it now to see if it fixes the problem
02:38 PM roycroft: and it does not
02:38 PM Tom_L: damn isp decided to do repairs all night and into today
02:38 PM Bleepshop: JT-Shop: Tube with cap at the top, 45 elbow on the bottom and a street-90 with a restrictor plate in the join on that to give a bowl with a limited amount of feed. Works quite well.
02:40 PM roycroft: so i just disabled adblocker and immediately got an ad claiming our governor is a socialist
02:40 PM Tom_L: maybe he is?
02:40 PM Tom_L: i don't know him personally
02:40 PM roycroft: i would not mind the ads on youtube so much if they weren't so offensive
02:40 PM roycroft: she is not a socialist
02:40 PM roycroft: she's a pragmatist
02:41 PM roycroft: the ad is complaining about taxes
02:41 PM Tom_L: everybody does that
02:41 PM roycroft: well, it was, until i closed the window
02:41 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: It's a politician... Come back when it's caught fire and I'll vote to pee a ring around it to keep the flames from spreading ? ;D
02:41 PM roycroft: yeah, but not everyone calls everyone they don't like a socialist
02:42 PM roycroft: i still don't get why i seem to get all the extreme right-wing ads
02:42 PM roycroft: surely google know by now that i'm died-in-the-wool hippie
02:42 PM Tom_L: they know how you voted, maybe they just wanna piss you off
02:43 PM roycroft: sadly that seems to be the maga mentality
02:43 PM roycroft: it's not about solving problems
02:43 PM roycroft: it's about pissing off people you don't like
02:43 PM Bleepshop: roycroft: I was going to join the Anarchists but they had too many rules. ;D
02:45 PM Tom_L: damn i wish it would just rain and be done with it. this heavy air is killin my head
02:46 PM roycroft: i should just use a vpn to mogolia when i want to watch youtube videos
02:46 PM roycroft: i don't understand a word of monogolian so i would not find the ads offensive
02:47 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Yeah, my arthritis is giving me hell today which is why I'm kind of in a mood. LOL
02:47 PM Tom_L: Carl sent me a nice email explaining the cutters
02:48 PM Tom_L: aparently aluminum sticks to Altim and unless you use coolant it will clog the cutter up eventually
02:49 PM Tom_L: Altin has aluminum in it so without coolant it will start to build a layer
02:50 PM Tom_L: with that said, he went on to say he used a cutter for a year before having to change it out
03:15 PM veegee: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0427/8409/6410/t/4/assets/description_image_lathe_swing.png what?
03:15 PM veegee: That's not what "swing" is, is it?
03:15 PM veegee: I thought it was the maximum diameter over the bed
03:16 PM roycroft: there is usually a swing over bed and swing over gap specification
03:17 PM Rab: https://image.slidesharecdn.com/principleoflathemachine-131226093423-phpapp01/95/presentation-on-lathe-machine-2-638.jpg
03:20 PM Rab: veegee, weird little model, is it from a video game?
03:35 PM Connor: swing over cross-slide too
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: cross swing over bed radius
03:37 PM CaptHindsight: the gap spec only applies to gap bed lathes
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: that swing measurement would be for things like keeping the wheel on an axle while you turn
03:39 PM CaptHindsight: not recommended
03:40 PM roycroft: "swing over cross-slide" is almost always "not enough", if it's something you need to ask about
03:44 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: pleaae look for a portable engine dyno for me
03:44 PM veegee: Rab from this site sadly: https://accusizetools.com/collections/quick-change-tool-post
03:45 PM veegee: CaptHindsight you mean something to measure output power of an engine? Or something to quickly bolt onto a small engine to generate electricity?
03:45 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: measure hp and lb foots
03:45 PM veegee: blasphemy. I most certainly will not
03:46 PM CaptHindsight: ok it can be metric
03:46 PM veegee: I will, however, find one that measures kW and N•m
03:47 PM veegee: 1. Maximum power capacity? 2. does it need to be able to measure and sample throughout the RPM range? That is, be able to take instantaneous measurements
03:47 PM veegee: A very cheap one can heat known quantity of water for example and measure temperature difference
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: <750KW
03:48 PM JT-Shop: anyone seen cad files for receptacles? I have 3 6-15R and 2 duplex in a 5 gang box so custom cover
03:48 PM veegee: Ok that's definitely not "portable" LOL
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: 2 yes, would be handy
03:48 PM CaptHindsight: ok 300Kw
03:49 PM veegee: That's still enormous.
03:49 PM veegee: What's your definition of portable?
03:49 PM veegee: Like something you can move between workshops on a truck?
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: sure
03:54 PM veegee: Alrighty I'll see what I can fin d
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: doesn't have to fit in a kids toy wagon
03:54 PM veegee: CaptHindsight budget?
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: hah , ships first class USPS https://www.ebay.com/itm/114274037329
03:54 PM roycroft: i made my own cad drawings for those, jt-shop, but only for locking receptacles
03:54 PM veegee: Ah so you want to measure wheel power
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: <$5k USD, so $1M Canadian
03:54 PM aaroncnc: is there a way to change the background color of a pyvcp panel? and text color i am not seeing it in the docs. I have changed axis to a dark theme via the TCL file but my panels are still default.
03:54 PM veegee: Also that's only the rollers
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: veegee: yeah, thats the heavy bit
03:54 PM CaptHindsight: the computerization part is easy
03:56 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, grabcad has a few
03:56 PM veegee: That's certainly one option
03:56 PM JT-Shop: ok, I might look around for hole size and screw locations
03:56 PM veegee: If I were building one, I would use an AC induction motor
03:56 PM JT-Shop: do you have to sign up for grabcad?
03:57 PM * JT-Shop wanders to the other shop
03:57 PM Tom_L: i dunno
03:57 PM veegee: The Eddy current type are the most common I think
03:58 PM veegee: Which is pretty much the same idea as an AC induction motor
03:58 PM veegee: ... behaving as a brake by injecting DC into the field windings
03:58 PM roycroft: jt-shop: mcmaster sell electrical boxes and covers
03:59 PM roycroft: you can pull the cad files of the covers from there and incorporate them into your drawings
03:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, i added a couple more handy files
03:59 PM JT-Shop2: ok
04:00 PM veegee: CaptHindsight if you go the hydraulic route, you can get away with a relatively compact gear pump
04:00 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop2, my isp was down all night/day
04:00 PM veegee: But your "load" then becomes the "pressure relief valve", which is actually an adjustable valve. And the oil will get very hot, so you need a big oil cooler
04:00 PM JT-Shop2: ouch
04:00 PM Tom_L: didn't know if you tried or not
04:02 PM veegee: CaptHindsight what you linked is rollers only, doesn't have the actual load and measurement equipment
04:03 PM veegee: You'll need quite a bit of hydraulic oil too. But hydraulic ones are nice, you can chain multiple gear pumps in parallel to increase load capability and it's very easy to control load. You'll need a pressure gauge and flow meter
04:05 PM CaptHindsight: I don't need a howto, just eyes on parts :)
04:06 PM CaptHindsight: I'm sure there is a hackaday with a duino and a horse trough and water wheel setup
04:13 PM roycroft: wow
04:13 PM roycroft: there are still websites that require flash
04:13 PM roycroft: requiring extinct software is a good way to become extinct yourself
04:16 PM CaptHindsight: is it possible to pass a law that lets you poke somebody in the eyes for saying "but look it works" as evidence that something actually works well?
04:20 PM aaroncnc: hmm seems you can use the <fg> and <bg> that the docs show is for buttons on other things as well. Would be nice if the documentation showed that.
04:22 PM * roycroft hands aaroncnc a box of assorted colored chisel-tip sharpies
04:31 PM skunkworks: I really should try the cam in freecad..
04:31 PM skunkworks: I have been drawing random stuff...
04:32 PM skunkworks: Seems mostly usable.
04:34 PM CaptHindsight: it is coming along
04:35 PM CaptHindsight: freecad path is what I'm exploring to build on for 5-axis path generation
04:35 PM roycroft: i've been spending more time with freecad lately
04:35 PM roycroft: it's still pretty weird, but i'm getting used toit
04:35 PM XXCoder: hey all
04:35 PM skunkworks: I have tried it a few times in the past.. This time seems like it might stick.
04:35 PM roycroft: i still get it in strange modes once in a while that i can't seem to recover from
04:36 PM XXCoder: there should be mode combo box
04:36 PM skunkworks: roycroft: right - or can't figure out why a tangent tangent constraint doesn't work.
04:36 PM CaptHindsight: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-questions/42008-ros-linuxcnc-link Interesting project to link ROS (robot operatings system) to LCNc and have a ready to install ISO
04:36 PM roycroft: perhaps by the time i feel comfortable using it they'll have decided on an assembly workbench
04:36 PM skunkworks: But there seems to be a few ways to do things..
04:36 PM CaptHindsight: https://github.com/grotius-cnc/Linux-Embedded/releases/tag/1.0.0
04:37 PM roycroft: assuming it takes me a score or so years to feel comfortable with it
04:37 PM skunkworks: there was a question about on reddit ama - if they use some sort of realtime linux? Sounds like they don't - but create custom kernels
04:38 PM skunkworks: sorry - spacex
04:39 PM CaptHindsight: https://www.zdnet.com/article/spacex-weve-launched-32000-linux-computers-into-space-for-starlink-internet/
04:41 PM skunkworks: right.. Kinda cool
04:42 PM skunkworks: parents are still loving starlink
04:42 PM XXCoder: hey skunk hows your project so far
04:42 PM skunkworks: XXCoder: slow...
04:43 PM XXCoder: cool :)
04:43 PM skunkworks: Peter created a bit file for me so I can get the 4th axis rolling on the green machine
04:43 PM XXCoder: bit file?
04:43 PM skunkworks: (if that is what you are talking about - I have a lot of projects in my head...)
04:44 PM XXCoder: yeah
04:44 PM skunkworks: XXCoder: for 7i92 mesa board - so I have a stepgen on p1.
04:45 PM XXCoder: ahh
04:45 PM XXCoder: nice
04:45 PM skunkworks: pretty bastardized setup - stepgens, encoder counters and smart serial..
04:46 PM skunkworks: plus it is connected to a leadshine stepper drive. (3 axis)
04:46 PM skunkworks: (mesa is awesome)
04:47 PM XXCoder: yep!
04:47 PM XXCoder: i didnt want to bother with it till i understand how lcnc works. but i only went halfway when i moved. no room now aw
04:51 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, it's called customized
04:52 PM Tom_L: i hope peter is teaching his grandkids all his tricks to keep mesa goin
04:52 PM Tom_L: bribe em with ice cream.... whatever it takes :)
04:59 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:26 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: you wouldn't believe thrift shop prices here. Nor pawn shops for tht matter
05:28 PM XXCoder: prices not matching is a concern
05:29 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: It depends on the condition, the day and who's pricing stuff around here. Also you can do quite a bit of haggling if you happen to know the new price of the same or similar item.
05:31 PM drdoc: sometimes I think there's a city ordinance prohibiting barter or price negotiation here
05:31 PM roycroft: thrift shops around here usually charge retail or retail+ for all but the most total junk
05:32 PM roycroft: pawn shops charge ebay prices, so retail++
05:32 PM drdoc: when I ask what they'd take for an item, people act like I'm speaking Urdu
05:32 PM drdoc: roycroft: same here
05:32 PM Bleepshop: I haven't spent >$15 for a monitor in years except for the 55" Sony plasma screen with < 3000 hrs on it I bought last year for $25. LOL
05:34 PM roycroft: i've never seen a 4k display at a thrift store, so it doesn't really matter what they charge for that kind of stuff
05:35 PM Bleepshop: I'm waiting for the state surplus sale to open up again where I can get 5 year old PCs with monitor/KB/mouse for $50 each.
05:35 PM CaptHindsight: over here it's like one shoe, monitor with LCD missing, sewing machine with no custom cords, bobbins etc
05:36 PM CaptHindsight: but i have found new clothing, factory samples etc
05:36 PM CaptHindsight: chairs with 3 legs
05:37 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: And how many did they leave the factory with 4 or 5 ? ;D
05:37 PM CaptHindsight: they don't take old PC's at the Goodwills around here
05:37 PM CaptHindsight: not even laptops
05:38 PM XXCoder: yeah village value or such suck here generally
05:38 PM XXCoder: i cant find good pants or shorts there lol
05:38 PM XXCoder: let alone computer and such
05:38 PM drdoc: we're getting another turd-floater here
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: I look for things that I'll use a few times and then it's trashed like blenders for soil samples, coffee grinders for pigments etc
05:39 PM drdoc: yeah
05:39 PM CaptHindsight: drdoc: have you guys thawed out yet?
05:39 PM XXCoder: capt yeah i salvaged blender from my bro family so i can blend failed pla prints
05:39 PM drdoc: sacrificial hot plates from old coffee pots
05:39 PM XXCoder: i plan to try make a brick out of em
05:39 PM drdoc: heh
05:40 PM drdoc: CaptHindsight: dude
05:40 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: Tell them to start taking them and you'll pick up the stack once a week or so ? I've done that before with a couple of thrift stores. Give them a USB key to wipe the drives and they're ready to install linux. You don't even have to remove that pesky Windows virus.
05:40 PM drdoc: we've already had a 90+ week
05:40 PM CaptHindsight: drdoc: was wondering how long the repairs will take
05:40 PM drdoc: that will go on for a while
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: 88F this weekend here, was just frost warning last week
05:41 PM XXCoder: 60s f here
05:41 PM drdoc: central texas is in monsoon season now
05:41 PM XXCoder: stable temp regions. move there
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: Bleepshop: nah i give Linux self install dongles to kids to bring to school
05:41 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Lucky SOB. I had to light the pellet stove in the shop ~15:00.
05:42 PM CaptHindsight: hey kids wanna play Linux at school?
05:42 PM drdoc: you know what you *don't* want to hear from a radiology/imaging lab?
05:42 PM XXCoder: "we acciently turned you into HULK"?
05:43 PM drdoc: "Yeah, your pcp already called. He wants us to get you in tomorrow morning."
05:43 PM CaptHindsight: Bleepshop: no, they are treated like toxic waste here
05:43 PM drdoc: well, they are
05:43 PM XXCoder: pcs definitely is
05:43 PM CaptHindsight: drdoc: hope things go well tomorrow
05:43 PM drdoc: eh
05:43 PM XXCoder: its why its better reuse than throw away
05:43 PM drdoc: worst case I give up my left nut
05:44 PM XXCoder: here we have computer recyclers which is good
05:44 PM drdoc: I've been threatening to trade it for something for decades
05:44 PM XXCoder: they try to fix and sell pcs as much as they can, and properly recycle rest
05:44 PM drdoc: XXCoder: same here
05:45 PM * CaptHindsight waits for paint to dry
05:45 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Tell them to pickle it in a jar because you'll want it back for a conversation starter ? xD
05:45 PM drdoc: are you keeping a cloe eye on it?
05:45 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: absolutely
05:45 PM drdoc: *close
05:46 PM XXCoder: dr hope its not serious tho
05:46 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Figured the typo was 'close' or 'cloned'... Hard to guess which in here. ;D
05:47 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: I was asking the Cap'n if he's keeping a close eye on that paint
05:47 PM CaptHindsight: did you see the news about companies that don't want to pay people enough money to live on can't find new workers?
05:47 PM drdoc: been seeing that since 9186
05:47 PM CaptHindsight: calling it a labor shortage
05:47 PM drdoc: 1986
05:48 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: On that note... https://static.boredpanda.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/1392127223843409924-png__700.jpg
05:48 PM drdoc: and the feds will give them more money, again, to fix it
05:48 PM CaptHindsight: why not a payment shortage?
05:49 PM drdoc: I think I caught it early, and I really think it's something trivial
05:49 PM CaptHindsight: yeah maybe in 30 more years trickle down will start to work
05:50 PM drdoc: there's a lot of old damage there from a botched vasectony and both I and the doc think the mass is related
05:50 PM * drdoc types for shit, blames laptop keyboard
05:50 PM XXCoder: ouch what happened on vasectony if ok to talk about
05:51 PM drdoc: you were a roughneck, right?
05:51 PM drdoc: or was that JT?
05:52 PM drdoc: anyway, I was. Had a crapload of PTO backed up, so I could take all the time off I needed for post-op
05:52 PM XXCoder: me? no
05:52 PM drdoc: If and only if the doctor instructed time off
05:53 PM drdoc: some day I'll write up that whole sorry saga - it was hilariously disastrous from start to finish
05:53 PM drdoc: but re: damage the doc sent me back to the drilling rig after 4 days off
05:54 PM drdoc: 2 days of steady humping 100lb off the floor and tossing it back and my balls looked like good-sized lemons
05:55 PM drdoc: the worm (junior floorhand) started poking fun on the way home because I'd grunt every time we hit a chuck hole
05:56 PM drdoc: crew boss stopped the car and put him out
05:56 PM drdoc: never saw him again
05:56 PM drdoc: I take next day off, go back to doc, who couldn't understand how this happened
05:57 PM drdoc: "I told you light duty!"
05:57 PM XXCoder: ouch
05:57 PM drdoc: "I told you there IS no light duty!"
05:57 PM drdoc: so the writes me 5 days off
05:58 PM drdoc: 4 days back at work, back to doc, wants to give me three more days
05:58 PM XXCoder: wait back to work? why no day off?
05:59 PM drdoc: XXCoder: surgery, 4 days off, 2 days back, 5 days off, 4 days back at work
05:59 PM drdoc: I told him "look. This is what I did yesterday." and ran down the first hour of the previous shift
06:00 PM XXCoder: ahh ok
06:00 PM drdoc: the guy was shocked. I think he thought a roughneck walks around with a pipe wrench on his shoulder & whistles all day
06:00 PM XXCoder: lol
06:01 PM XXCoder: even I know thats not remotely true
06:01 PM drdoc: all told I missed 26 days of work, nearly lost both my job and my left testicle, and came out of it with a peanut-sized scar on the ligament
06:02 PM XXCoder: not great but not too bad too
06:02 PM drdoc: the duct they snip is attached to the ligament that holds up yer danglies
06:03 PM drdoc: no, that's really, really bad
06:03 PM XXCoder: i guess i misunderstoo
06:03 PM drdoc: if I'd been able to take off 8 or 10 days to start with, or even the second round, there'd have been no problem
06:04 PM drdoc: the idiot doc decided I was whining for free days off and ignored whatever I told him about my job duties
06:04 PM drdoc: and the evidence of his own eyes
06:05 PM XXCoder: sigh
06:05 PM XXCoder: some doctors do that'
06:05 PM drdoc: yup
06:06 PM drdoc: there was a lot that really was funny about it, though.
06:07 PM drdoc: they told me if I did the shaving it' save some cash, so I called the day before and asked exactly what to mow
06:07 PM drdoc: "the area"
06:07 PM drdoc: "Well, yeah, but which part and how much?"
06:08 PM drdoc: "you know. The... the area"
06:08 PM XXCoder: lol prudish or what?
06:08 PM drdoc: the damn nurse couldn't bring herself to say the words
06:08 PM drdoc: finally I say fukit and sit down & shave stem to stern
06:09 PM XXCoder: id do it yeah just get rid of all hair
06:09 PM drdoc: literally, navel to butthole
06:10 PM drdoc: I go in next morning, receptionist wants my ID, insurance, co-pay and my release form
06:10 PM drdoc: my, uh, what?
06:10 PM drdoc: they did not tell me that state law required my wife to consent to my vasectomy
06:11 PM drdoc: and my wife is 40 miles away
06:11 PM drdoc: so I tell her "hang on, I'll be back"
06:11 PM XXCoder: fair enough, i dislike laws that allow only one side and limit other.
06:12 PM drdoc: call a friend who calls his wife, I go over, she signs my wife's name
06:12 PM drdoc: XXCoder: texas law did NOT require my permission for my wife to have a tubal ligation
06:13 PM XXCoder: yeah either both free to do so, or both consent required is fine to me
06:13 PM drdoc: I get back, hand in the damn form, the receptionist looks around and says "So who's driving you home?"
06:13 PM XXCoder: i dislike it when only one is required to
06:13 PM drdoc: "Me?"
06:13 PM drdoc: "Oh, no, you won't be able to after the general anaesthesia"
06:14 PM XXCoder: lol reminds me of my eye test
06:14 PM drdoc: "Wait what, we said a local only"
06:14 PM drdoc: "We don't do that"
06:14 PM drdoc: "Hang on a minute"
06:14 PM XXCoder: nobody could get me home from that so I just drove home with very blurry vision
06:14 PM XXCoder: i used only route i knew very well
06:15 PM drdoc: I call my friend and he calls his wife
06:15 PM XXCoder: though i did stay at hospital for 30 to hour so its not THAT bad
06:15 PM drdoc: "Sure, she'll come get you"
06:15 PM drdoc: I finally get in, strip, doc comes in
06:15 PM drdoc: starts laughing like hell
06:16 PM drdoc: "What did you DO???"
06:16 PM drdoc: "Huh?"
06:17 PM CaptHindsight: they caught my sons cancer very early when he was 26
06:18 PM XXCoder: oh boy
06:18 PM CaptHindsight: surgery and couldn't walk for 6 months
06:18 PM CaptHindsight: he's 28 now and no signs of anything
06:18 PM XXCoder: dr so what you say besides huh to doc
06:18 PM XXCoder: capt thats very good catch early
06:18 PM drdoc: "You only needed to shave >this< much on each side!"
06:18 PM XXCoder: young means faster heal
06:18 PM drdoc: which I knew, but that nurse...
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: took 9 months from surgery to walk without a cane, then covid lockdown hit
06:19 PM XXCoder: better overdone than underdone
06:19 PM CaptHindsight: so good times
06:19 PM drdoc: So he gets me laid out, draped, painted, and shoots me up with a gigantic hit of liquid valium
06:20 PM XXCoder: capt i suspect covid lockdown is what caused my back to crash badly. im doing physical theopy and back is improving a LOT
06:20 PM drdoc: I'm talking the ceiling breathing gigantic
06:20 PM XXCoder: scch
06:20 PM XXCoder: ecch*
06:20 PM drdoc: I'm lying there riding the rush and he turns around
06:20 PM drdoc: mask on, holding up a scalpel and forceps like the Mad Scientist
06:21 PM drdoc: and says
06:21 PM drdoc: "There's more than one way to skin a cat!"
06:21 PM drdoc: ...
06:21 PM drdoc: "motherfucker if I could move I'd nut punch you and run like hell
06:21 PM drdoc: "
06:22 PM drdoc: then one of his nurses DROPS a forceps on my belly while it's clamped to that ligament
06:23 PM drdoc: which I felt right up to my throat
06:23 PM XXCoder: ow
06:23 PM XXCoder: that'd be far worse on local
06:23 PM drdoc: to be fair, that was likely partly my fault
06:23 PM CaptHindsight: wow, did they not like you or similar?
06:23 PM drdoc: I think she was smoking pot she bought from me
06:24 PM CaptHindsight: oh so friends
06:24 PM drdoc: the nurses were
06:24 PM drdoc: he was just a quack
06:25 PM drdoc: everything went ok after that, other than my cods swelling 3x normal
06:26 PM drdoc: till my first day back, second round, and we're cleaning threads prepping well casing to finish the hole
06:26 PM drdoc: it's windy, we're in a hurry, and I might have been a little high
06:27 PM drdoc: and suddenly I'm on fire
06:27 PM drdoc: my underwear and bandages had finally soaked through with a mix of lye, dieel, and laundry soap
06:28 PM XXCoder: ow
06:28 PM drdoc: and NOBODY WILL HELP ME get my god damned boots untied
06:28 PM drdoc: because I'm dancing around screaming curses and trying to drop trou
06:29 PM drdoc: and they're all literally rolling around laughing
06:29 PM XXCoder: definitely not friends
06:29 PM XXCoder: friends laugh as they help you
06:29 PM drdoc: very much friends
06:30 PM drdoc: they were incapacitiated
06:30 PM XXCoder: ahh
06:30 PM XXCoder: i guess nothing to do there besides working or buzzed
06:30 PM drdoc: I ended up hopping up the stairs with my pants around my ankles and dumping the water cooler on my crotch
06:31 PM drdoc: no, I mean they were laughing too hard to help
06:31 PM XXCoder: ahh ok lol
06:32 PM drdoc: thank Mongo The Rig God that was before cell phones and youtube
06:32 PM XXCoder: lol
06:32 PM drdoc: although they're probaby still telling that story on the rigs
06:33 PM drdoc: I went back to that company 7 or 8 yers later and heard it my 3rd or 4th day
06:33 PM drdoc: dude had no idea I was the guy
06:33 PM XXCoder: hopefully anomitzed by then
06:33 PM XXCoder: hah!
06:33 PM drdoc: so, yeah
06:34 PM drdoc: whatever's goin on down there now is very likely just irritation or infection related to the scarring
06:35 PM XXCoder: you: probbaly this https://media.tenor.co/videos/bd8291ddbc33c04467254369b9d7907e/mp4
06:35 PM XXCoder: or scar growing
06:35 PM XXCoder: if that doc isnt good it may be that
06:35 PM drdoc: and even if it's not, I said goodbye to that one in 1985
06:35 PM XXCoder: my nephew had 4 surgeries for guts because of scar growing in and blocking poop
06:35 PM XXCoder: first one when he was days old
06:36 PM drdoc: yeah
06:36 PM XXCoder: that was for bag though. when he was i forgot, year old? 2? it was removed and he lost 1/3 colon
06:36 PM drdoc: I'm certainly concerned, but I'm not nearly as worried as I would have thought
06:37 PM XXCoder: thats good
06:37 PM drdoc: "wanna see my nuticle?" might be a good pickup line
06:37 PM drdoc: :-p
06:37 PM XXCoder: most doctors is pretty good
06:37 PM XXCoder: i like my doctor
06:37 PM XXCoder: even if he couldnt figure what is causing my perment dizzyness
06:38 PM drdoc: meniere's?
06:38 PM XXCoder: whats that
06:38 PM drdoc: chronic vertigo
06:39 PM XXCoder: hmm dont think so
06:39 PM drdoc: very often associated with hearing impairment
06:39 PM XXCoder: first one was 8 years ago? that one lasted 9 months
06:39 PM drdoc: ow
06:39 PM XXCoder: nothing till 10 months ago
06:39 PM XXCoder: still ongoing, that one
06:39 PM drdoc: I have a lot of trouble with dizzyness too
06:40 PM drdoc: but it's usually a few hours or daysat most
06:40 PM drdoc: days at
06:40 PM XXCoder: it gets tiring
06:40 PM drdoc: I can't imagine
06:41 PM drdoc: a day or three is pretty unpleasant
06:41 PM XXCoder: doing theopy on that too
06:41 PM XXCoder: its increasing my sense of balance which is good, but it does shit to dizzyness
06:41 PM drdoc: the tilty table thing?
06:41 PM XXCoder: nah
06:42 PM XXCoder: depending on deafness type, you can have no loss of balance to total
06:42 PM drdoc: right
06:42 PM XXCoder: waardensberg, what I have, ranges widely on that
06:42 PM XXCoder: i have some loss in balance but not too bad
06:42 PM drdoc: same here
06:42 PM XXCoder: ironically that theopy is helping me on that
06:42 PM drdoc: if I can keep my eyes open I'm fine
06:43 PM drdoc: close 'em, I'm gonna fall pretty quick
06:43 PM _unreal_: heh
06:43 PM _unreal_: you'd love my eyes then
06:43 PM XXCoder: me too. i depend on visual to balance.
06:44 PM XXCoder: my balance theorpist told me to alk distance with eyes closed
06:44 PM _unreal_: all kinds of macro issues
06:44 PM XXCoder: "nope i cant even stand with eyes closed"
06:44 PM drdoc: _unreal_: "Tell me more... about my eyes...."
06:44 PM _unreal_: I see waves bubbles bulges etcc
06:44 PM _unreal_: nothing lines up
06:45 PM drdoc: that's a Bugs Bunny quote if you were wondering
06:45 PM _unreal_: if I have my glasses on I can see a lot better but also screws with my head
06:45 PM _unreal_: hence I dont wear them much
06:45 PM _unreal_: and yet My head is about 2.5' away from the monitor and I can read fine
06:45 PM _unreal_: err for the most part
06:45 PM drdoc: can you compensate, drawing & whatnot?
06:46 PM _unreal_: I HAVE to have a known straight edge most things
06:46 PM _unreal_: tight lines etc.....
06:46 PM drdoc: I'm that nearsighted - I focus at about 4-6 inches uncorrected
06:46 PM _unreal_: I cant tell if its what ever I'm working on "ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING i WORK ON YACHTS" STRAIGHT or not
06:46 PM drdoc: but no distortion
06:46 PM _unreal_: thats the crazy shit. my focus IS great
06:46 PM _unreal_: its the alignment
06:47 PM drdoc: right
06:47 PM _unreal_: infact both eyes even one at a time can see double
06:47 PM _unreal_: though my right is 10x worse then the left
06:47 PM drdoc: yow
06:47 PM _unreal_: big bubbles blury areas
06:47 PM _unreal_: etc....
06:48 PM _unreal_: right is more middle area is bubbles. left eye its more around outside the middle is fucked up LOL
06:48 PM _unreal_: really screws with my eyesight
06:48 PM drdoc: no doubt
06:48 PM _unreal_: 10 years ago wasnt so bad
06:49 PM _unreal_: its the "bubbles" that are really annoying
06:49 PM drdoc: isn't that our collective motto?
06:49 PM _unreal_: warping my sight
06:49 PM _unreal_: ya
06:49 PM drdoc: "10 years ago wasnt so bad"
06:49 PM _unreal_: though both eyes the dead center is more or less ok
06:49 PM drdoc: story of my last 25 years
06:50 PM XXCoder: dr you work as machinist now or what?
06:51 PM drdoc: _unreal_: the guy who originally came up with organic circuitry had the same vision problems
06:51 PM drdoc: he managed to change the world a little, anyhow
06:51 PM drdoc: bigtime one of my heroes
06:51 PM _unreal_: XXCoder, smashed my right pointer finger first joint good
06:51 PM _unreal_: kills me typing right now
06:51 PM drdoc: XXCoder: I'm retired
06:51 PM Tom_L: you like pain ehh?
06:51 PM XXCoder: ahh ok :)
06:52 PM XXCoder: bleh id like to retire now
06:52 PM XXCoder: back sucks
06:52 PM drdoc: doing some gov't auction flipping for toy money
06:52 PM _unreal_: stocks here :)
06:52 PM XXCoder: living at right region helps
06:52 PM drdoc: yep
06:52 PM _unreal_: made $1k on NERV today
06:52 PM drdoc: howdy
06:53 PM _unreal_: duty
06:53 PM drdoc: howdy Tom
06:53 PM drdoc: typing sucks
06:53 PM * drdoc twirls the Excuse Rolodex
06:53 PM _unreal_: lets see if I can keep this story short...
06:53 PM drdoc: unlike me?
06:53 PM _unreal_: you know the wood blocks often used to stack up under mega yachts
06:53 PM _unreal_: 8x8's
06:54 PM _unreal_: I picked one up today moving it. I was in the shop
06:55 PM _unreal_: something made a BIG noise. so I looked to see what it was as I was turning and moving the big ass block. well I ran into the solid metal part of the huge clam shell sand blaster we have. full force of the block between my first knuckle of my right hand pointerfinger and the latch clip on the damn machine
06:56 PM _unreal_: My right hand pointer especially at the base is about 1/3 larger then my left right now.
06:56 PM _unreal_: hurts like hell to type at certain movement direc tions
06:56 PM _unreal_: mainly twards bhy
06:57 PM _unreal_: err n hy
06:57 PM _unreal_: especially n
06:57 PM _unreal_: fewwwwwwf
06:59 PM roycroft: grr
06:59 PM roycroft: i still don't have an answer about my sander
06:59 PM _unreal_: funny part was the guy who watched it by chance.... was going OH MY GOD... OMG OMG ARE YOU OK!!!! I heard it break......
06:59 PM roycroft: i'd like to actually try it out
06:59 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to put a brand new $10 sanding disc on it and then have them tell me they're sending me a new disc or sander
07:00 PM roycroft: shop fox are a division of grizzly
07:00 PM _unreal_: I was like ouch..... nope not broken. latch is bent up good.... heehheheh guy was like HOW!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????????????? HOW did you not break anything.... and bend the latch...
07:00 PM roycroft: they're even located in the same city, likely the same call center
07:00 PM roycroft: but they have different support staff
07:00 PM _unreal_: I was like dude look at my wrists, they are almost as wide as my hands. I dont break easy....
07:00 PM roycroft: grizzly would have resolved this within an hour
07:00 PM _unreal_: heheheh
07:00 PM roycroft: you should stop typing and start with the ice packs
07:01 PM drdoc: ^^^^^^
07:01 PM _unreal_: then I'd be numb typing LOL
07:01 PM drdoc: roycroft: that's exactly why we give grizzly our money
07:01 PM _unreal_: would be like lisping with a sore toung
07:01 PM _unreal_: LOL
07:02 PM _unreal_: tongue
07:03 PM drdoc: roycroft: don't you have a 10" carborundum stone?
07:03 PM drdoc: ;)
07:04 PM roycroft: i primarily use diamond stones and ceramic stones for sharpening
07:04 PM roycroft: but i'm not going to try to true the disc until i hear back from the manufacturer
07:05 PM roycroft: if they want to replace the disc or the machine i need to let them do that
07:05 PM roycroft: if they tell me that 0.022" runout is within spec then i need to decide whether to return the machine or not
07:05 PM roycroft: only if they won't fix it and i decide to keep it will it be time for me to true it myself
07:06 PM roycroft: and that might only take 30 seconds
07:06 PM _unreal_: well timne for me to stop screwing around here and clean up my cnc so Ic an clamp down my laser pendent to get the holes milled
07:06 PM _unreal_: 2 holes and I can put it togher
07:06 PM roycroft: i'm concerned, though, that it might become unbalanced and start vibrating if i true it
07:06 PM _unreal_: be done with it
07:06 PM roycroft: or maybe sit down and put an ice pack on your wrist
07:09 PM roycroft: i can at least start measuring and sketching the cabinet for this new sander
07:09 PM roycroft: i have an oscillating spindle (bobbin) sander as well, and i'm going to mount them both on the same cabinet
07:09 PM roycroft: i can use the new machine as a prop at least so i can figure out the dimensions for the cabinet
07:11 PM drdoc: roycroft: I can't see that shaving a couple hundredths would affect balance more than the average sandin disk placement
07:11 PM drdoc: unless the whole disk is true but skewed
07:12 PM XXCoder: isnt sjkewed just mean you need to use it as "lathe" till its even again?
07:13 PM drdoc: XXCoder: think what that would do to the weight distribution
07:14 PM XXCoder: yeah there would be still iffy inside hole but outside would be been dressed
07:18 PM roycroft: i actually haven't measured if it's skewed or not
07:19 PM roycroft: i just put a dial indicator on it and turned it around a few revolutions
07:19 PM roycroft: it's possible that it's perfectly flat
07:19 PM roycroft: but still useless in its current state
07:19 PM roycroft: anyway, the first step is to wait for the manufacturer to respond
07:22 PM roycroft: but you are probably correct, drdoc
07:22 PM roycroft: espcially since the motor only runs at 1725rpm
07:32 PM _unreal_: roycroft, wrist is fine its my damn pointer finger base joint/knuckle that hurts
07:34 PM roycroft: whatever was injured, pack that in ice
07:36 PM _unreal_: little late for that. happend at work swelling is long since set in. at this point I need heat treatments
07:36 PM _unreal_: remember I use to be a nurse
07:36 PM _unreal_: heat cold retards the onset of swelling, heat helps reduce swelling
08:02 PM _unreal_: OMG...... this single core netbook is sooooooo slow
08:03 PM _unreal_: works fine as the cnc controller but my god everything else its a POS slow
08:03 PM _unreal_: total pitta
08:04 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:06 PM drdoc: roycroft: totally agree - the manufacturer should be first stop
09:22 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:38 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:27 PM roycroft: well teh youtube is really misbehaving tonight
10:27 PM XXCoder: yuuuup
10:27 PM roycroft: the ads are fine - the stream nice and smoothly, and are about three times as loud as the content, so i won't miss anything
10:27 PM XXCoder: too bad you dont use firefox
10:27 PM roycroft: but the videos themselves will stream for a few seconds and then buffer, and eventually stall completely
10:28 PM roycroft: this is on my tv, my laptop, and my imac
10:28 PM Tom_L: no sound on this pc is a blessing
10:28 PM roycroft: using both safari and firefox
10:28 PM roycroft: and the built-in app on the tv, of course
10:28 PM roycroft: anyway, when the video stalls, i can restart it
10:28 PM roycroft: and watch a really loud ad again
10:28 PM roycroft: and then skip forward to where it stalled before, and i can watch for another few seconds
10:28 PM XXCoder: one of those times im glad im deaf
10:29 PM Tom_L: i wish i knew the default config file for my cad tool list
10:29 PM Tom_L: i would edit a handfull of the defaults
10:29 PM roycroft: the volume thing is not an issue for most folks, i'm sure
10:29 PM roycroft: and not for me when i'm on a computer
10:29 PM roycroft: but it's a big deal when i'm watching on my tv
10:29 PM Tom_L: i never watch it on tv
10:30 PM roycroft: because my hifi system does not have a remote, so i have to jump up and adjust the volume if i want to deal with the sound difference
10:30 PM XXCoder: doh
10:30 PM roycroft: i like to watch youtube on my tv because it's a 55" screen and i can see things better than on a computer
10:30 PM XXCoder: my pc might havr a beeper? not sure if cases comes with em still
10:30 PM XXCoder: its only speaker it has
10:31 PM roycroft: they still come with speakers so you can hear post sounds if there's a problem
10:31 PM XXCoder: my mom watches youtube tv on tv 99% of her wake time
10:31 PM roycroft: well, so most people can hear post sounds
10:31 PM XXCoder: yah lol
10:31 PM XXCoder: i wanted to make connector wire for led flashing
10:31 PM XXCoder: but never got around to it
10:31 PM roycroft: anyway, i don't think this evening's behavior is an intentinal youtube thing
10:32 PM roycroft: i think something is wrong on their end
10:32 PM XXCoder: of course
10:32 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:32 PM roycroft: or on my isp's end
10:32 PM XXCoder: or hack by russia or china :P
10:32 PM XXCoder: i doubt i use same isp as you ;)
10:32 PM roycroft: i'm on comcast
10:32 PM XXCoder: im not
10:32 PM Tom_L: my dish remote had been acting up so they came out and gave it their best effort.. no joy
10:32 PM roycroft: or xfinity as they fancy themselves these days
10:32 PM Tom_L: so i ran a new cable from the splitter and it works fine now
10:32 PM roycroft: anyway, it's definitely not my tv
10:33 PM roycroft: netflix is fine
10:33 PM roycroft: my media server is fine
10:33 PM XXCoder: youtube ok now
10:33 PM roycroft: youtube ads are fine
10:33 PM roycroft: it's just youtube content that is broken
10:33 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:34 PM XXCoder: it completely workd for me now
10:34 PM XXCoder: i dont see ad ever
10:41 PM roycroft: the content is working again now
10:48 PM Bleepshop: Does anybody here use pycam? I can't get it to run to save my ass.
10:48 PM Tom_L: nope
10:49 PM roycroft: i looked at it a long time ago
10:50 PM Bleepshop: I've tried the downlload, I've tried cloning the git repo, I'm about to try hemlock... LOL
10:50 PM roycroft: i don't recall it being difficult to install
10:51 PM Bleepshop: Install was easy. Running it makes it bail with an error.
10:53 PM Bleepshop: And i don't know enough python yet to make it jump from wanting 2.6/2.7 to being happy with 3.x ...
10:54 PM roycroft: the sourceforge page says work has been paused for five years while the code base is being modernized so it can run on modern operating systems
10:54 PM roycroft: and that statement is from 2017, so it would be 8 years now
10:55 PM roycroft: perhaps that's why you're having trouble with it now and i don't remember having trouble with it years ago
10:55 PM XXCoder: isnt sourceforge dead and most people have moved on from it?
10:56 PM XXCoder: https://github.com/SebKuzminsky/pycam
10:56 PM XXCoder: this seem MUCH more recent than 8 years
10:57 PM XXCoder: most of source is 3 years old. some more recent
11:03 PM Bleepshop: Hmmm... I wonder if I should start hoarding clocks ? ;D http://scienceglobalnews.com/physics/more-accurate-clocks-unleash-more-disorder-in-the-universe-physicists-say/
11:06 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: That was the repo I cloned. "~/pycam/pycam/run_gui.sh
11:06 PM XXCoder: ok
11:07 PM Bleepshop: bails with the error Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/phydeaux/./picam/pycam/pycam/run_gui.py", line 47, in <module> from pycam.errors import InitializationError ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pycam.errors'
11:07 PM XXCoder: theres free cam umm p something? not pycam
11:07 PM roycroft: did you install the required packages first?
11:08 PM Bleepshop: As far as I can tell. This is a Fedora 33 box and the error points back to pycam itself.
11:08 PM XXCoder: no, its f lol
11:08 PM XXCoder: f-engrave
11:08 PM XXCoder: limited though
11:09 PM roycroft: well there's a list of dependencies
11:09 PM roycroft: you either installed them or you didn't
11:09 PM Bleepshop: Got that, it works for engraving but I want to do pocket and profile cuts with holding tabs.
11:10 PM XXCoder: bleep, that clock thing reminds me of that discworld book
11:10 PM XXCoder: guy in it made literally perfect clock and stopped universe time with it
11:10 PM Bleepshop: CamBam works somewhat, but the eval doesn't work right so I've got ~2"x2" to play with.
11:11 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Lord Ventanari ?
11:11 PM XXCoder: lol not him no
11:13 PM XXCoder: ah yes book is Thief of Time
11:13 PM Bleepshop: Been tempted to build a clock like his... i can be a bit of a sadist at times. LOL https://roryokane.github.io/vetinari-clock-simulator/
11:14 PM XXCoder: lol except im deaf so it dont affect me at akk'
11:16 PM XXCoder: i fairly suspect its possible
11:16 PM XXCoder: have gear with slightly uneven teeth
11:16 PM XXCoder: so sometimes it would rotate more before moving to next second, and sometimes less
11:42 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: SheetCAM's demo page is worded like the Linux trial copy might not have the line # limit
11:43 PM drdoc: and there's heekscnc
11:43 PM drdoc: I never got pycam to even start
11:45 PM drdoc: I need to find my idi amin playlist
11:45 PM drdoc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67LlVUVsG7w
11:46 PM drdoc: paly through once, then loop the choruses for about 20 minutes
11:46 PM drdoc: *play
11:47 PM drdoc: but this may be my favorite music video of all time:
11:47 PM drdoc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvUQcnfwUUM
11:48 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: for some reason the vetinari clock made me think of the Waits tune
11:52 PM drdoc: XXCoder: have geartrain with a bit of slop in a couple of 2-3-tooth segments on a couple of gears
11:52 PM drdoc: so it only glitches when those segments mate
11:53 PM XXCoder: lol ok
11:55 PM drdoc: if you calculate your tooth counts right, you could make the period vary enough to feel random
11:56 PM drdoc: or you could use a stepper motor and time it off /dev/urandom
11:56 PM drdoc: >-)
11:57 PM drdoc: huh
11:58 PM drdoc: anyone ever heard of "visolate"?
11:58 PM drdoc: never mind - last code update was 2012
