12:55 AM Deejay: moin
04:17 AM Tom_L: morning
05:21 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:53 AM JT-Cave: hmm can't find anything about taking a dc servo apart... guess I'll have to wing it
07:06 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, https://gesrepair.com/servo-motor-repair-step-by-step-process/
07:06 AM Tom_L: nothing specific to yours
07:06 AM JT-Cave: yeah I saw that page but the video is just some photos of stuff
07:09 AM Tom_L: https://www.motiontronic.co.za/want-to-repair-a-servo-motor-yourself-heres-our-advice/
07:11 AM Tom_L: supposed to rain but i don't see it yet
07:26 AM JT-Cave: cool and overcast here
07:26 AM Tom_L: same
07:29 AM skunkworks: same
07:35 AM Tom_L: you see the test cut with the new cutter?
07:37 AM Tom_L: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7PcbEKrtkI
07:37 AM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60Deg_3Flute_3500R_F30_Finish.jpg
07:37 AM Tom_L: i thought the finish was pretty good
07:37 AM Tom_L: much more than that and it started degrading
07:38 AM Tom_L: .2 deep, .125 width
07:39 AM Tom_L: spindle didn't like the full 80% depth (.3)
07:40 AM JT-Cave: nice finish
07:41 AM Tom_L: later...
07:54 AM perry_j1987: good morning
07:54 AM perry_j1987: guys i may be in trouble... i just sold a spare vehicle and have this pile of cash now... AND tax return is coming any day now heh
07:55 AM perry_j1987: is a new mill in my future? :P
08:08 AM mrec_: I fixed my standby problem another way, I put a microcontroller between the parallel port and the stepper and just turn off the stepper after idling 0.5sec
08:09 AM mrec_: the main purpose however was to close the loop between the stepper and the input with an encoder (without linuxcnc)
08:09 AM mrec_: linuxcnc is just controlling via open-loop here, the hardware is doing the closed loop.
10:32 AM roycroft: i just got vaccine scam-attempted
10:32 AM roycroft: i got a call on my cell from "the medical compensation board" saying that if i send them proof of vaccination and my bank account number they will deposit $1000 in my bank account
11:00 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
11:18 AM JT-Cave: and you wonder how many older folks fall for that and get robbed
11:19 AM * JT-Cave sees that lunch minute is up...
11:37 AM roycroft: too many, sadly
11:38 AM roycroft: i'm vehemently against capital punishment, but if anyone wanted to try to persuade me otherwise, an argument about phone scammers who prey on the disadvantaged would be a good start
11:41 AM Rab: roycroft, that's a particularly ugly scam.
11:45 AM roycroft: it really is
11:45 AM roycroft: and i'm sorry to say this, but "andrew", who called me, had a distinct indian accent
11:47 AM roycroft: his english was very fluent, though, and i'm certain he understood the colorful words i used in referring to him and his line of work
12:20 PM JT-Shop: well got the shaft end bearing off and it's ok... which is bad because I can't figure out how to get the other end off the servo
12:29 PM veegee: Fusion 360 finally added support for high resolution displays
12:29 PM veegee: so much better
12:41 PM jymmmm: $58 i7 pc with free shipping, 16GB, 1TB https://www.ebay.com/itm/284289489546
12:41 PM jymmmm: I just bought 2 minutes ago, so will see
12:52 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, it's always the one you can't get to
12:56 PM JT-Shop: there has to be some way...
12:57 PM JT-Shop: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/12-milling/42516-anilam-1100m-servo-bearings
12:59 PM Tom_L: got pics?
01:00 PM Tom_L: that doesn't look very friendly
01:01 PM JT-Shop: I think now the black thingy is a tacho
01:02 PM JT-Shop: I'm sure the gold coupling will prevent me from removing the shaft
01:06 PM Rab: JT-Shop, if you tap the black part does it seem solid, like it's potted, or hollow, like a cover that's snapped into place?
01:07 PM JT-Shop: it moves a bit when I pull on it, but I've not pulled too hard yet
01:08 PM Rab: I once destroyed an optical encoder by assuming that the cover could be removed, when all pieces had been installed together as a unit, so I am very wary of this type of assembly now.
01:10 PM JT-Shop: I hear that
01:12 PM JT-Shop: it's a plastic cover and I got it off using my finger nails
01:12 PM rs[m]: just wanted to suggest that
01:33 PM JT-Shop: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/12-milling/42516-anilam-1100m-servo-bearings
01:33 PM JT-Shop: another photo
01:38 PM Rab: JT-Shop, it seems more likely to me that the shaft was turned down at that end, rather than a smaller shaft being pressed into place.
01:40 PM Rab: Either way, the plot is thickening. The aluminum brush housing looks like it might have clearance for the tach winding; I wonder if you can just push it off the bearing and over the winding at this point.
01:45 PM JT-Shop: the small shaft is a different color is why I assume it's pressed into a hole in the big shaft
01:45 PM JT-Shop: hello AliExpress send me an AC servo and drive...
01:46 PM JT-Shop: $350 for a 1000w 2500 RPM motor and drive
01:46 PM JT-Shop: so yea I can't hurt it more than it is now
02:18 PM JT-Shop: now to get the bearing off... it doesn't have anything I can grab on... new photo in post
02:19 PM Tom_L: my friend has a place he gets his stuff fixed if you want me to ask. i dunno if brand matters
02:19 PM Tom_L: oh wait... you're tearing the crap outta it already...
02:22 PM Tom_L: i'd measure the bearing before you decide to destroy it
02:22 PM JT-Shop: one thing left... get the bearing off
02:22 PM Tom_L: and make sure you can get one
02:24 PM JT-Shop: the front one is a 6203 I might have one in my desk drawer
02:30 PM Tom_L: is there any gap between the bearing and commutator?
03:44 PM JT-Shop: almost none, just a tiny bit at the edge
03:44 PM * JT-Shop just got back from horrible freight with a bearing separator kit
03:47 PM Tom_L: gonna do the trick?
04:10 PM JT-Shop: the encoder end was an inch bearing R10-2RS and the shaft end was 6203-2RS metric bearing
04:16 PM Tom_L: figgers
04:22 PM perry_j1987: hows it going guys
04:25 PM Tom_L: still got all 10 fingers n toes so good!
04:31 PM JT-Shop: bearings will be here tomorrow, had to get the seal from amazon so it will be a few days
04:32 PM Tom_L: any trouble getting the bearing off?
04:34 PM JT-Shop: no, it's a breeze with a bearing separator... been needing one for years!
04:35 PM Tom_L: i've always wanted one but always found a way so far without one
04:36 PM JT-Shop: horrible freight had a 12 piece kit on sale for $40
04:36 PM Tom_L: i got some front end kit from they years back and i think i used it once
04:36 PM Tom_L: i think i saw it
04:37 PM Tom_L: i'm not even sure what the kit was for now
04:37 PM Tom_L: i'm fairly impressed with those cutters i got
05:02 PM JT-Shop: I'll be impressed if the BP runs again lol
05:02 PM Tom_L: i have faith
05:03 PM JT-Shop: I have determination and stubbornness
05:03 PM Tom_L: do you have to relocate home or anything like that?
05:03 PM Tom_L: my but has changed several on his tree
05:04 PM JT-Shop: from messing with the encoder?
05:04 PM Tom_L: yeah
05:05 PM JT-Shop: I might have to putz with the thing that pushes on the home/limit switch but I doubt it
05:06 PM JT-Shop: I marked everything pretty good so at the most the index would be off only a few counts
05:06 PM Tom_L: he's had to change all sorts of things on his
05:06 PM Tom_L: MB, VFD, servos, spindle
05:06 PM Tom_L: he bought them new, sold his business and finally got the 2 trees back from them
05:06 PM JT-Shop: who's that?
05:07 PM Tom_L: my friend here that had a big shop
05:07 PM JT-Shop: ah
05:07 PM Tom_L: he still does work for them
05:07 PM Tom_L: stuff they can't figure out
05:07 PM JT-Shop: that's cool
05:08 PM Tom_L: he's 77 now
05:09 PM Tom_L: still climbs in a race car :)
05:26 PM JT-Shop: cool, what does he race?
05:28 PM * JT-Shop hopes he can still hold up the BlueWing at 75
05:29 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure what class he's in now but 1/4 mile
05:29 PM Tom_L: another friend of ours used to race alcohol funny cars
05:29 PM Tom_L: now he just helps his kid do it
05:32 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: awesome video - how are you liking the spindle?
05:32 PM Tom_L: i like it for what it is
05:32 PM Tom_L: i wish i knew how to tune the pid on the vfd to be a tiny bit more responsive
05:33 PM Tom_L: i stalled it once on that test @ 45 ipm ;)
05:33 PM JT-Shop: Rab, btw you were correct it was an optical delusion about the shaft
05:33 PM Tom_L: skunkworks, did you see the finish after that cut?
05:33 PM skunkworks: I don't think so?
05:34 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60Deg_3Flute_3500R_F30_Finish.jpg
05:34 PM Tom_L: that's what 60deg helix gets ya
05:34 PM skunkworks: The stmble drive I am using to run the spindle on the green machine is pretty amazing... I don't know if I have stalled it yet.
05:34 PM Tom_L: 3500 F30
05:34 PM skunkworks: Tom_L: nice!
05:35 PM skunkworks: spindle rpm makes up for rigidness - to a point :)
05:35 PM Tom_L: i could go higher but that seems like a good spot for it
05:36 PM skunkworks: Plus with all the non-circular turning - it has some pretty amazing low end torque.
05:36 PM Tom_L: this allows me to do things the high rpm spindles can't
05:36 PM JT-Shop: did anyone find a replacement for the stmble drive part that went obsolete?
05:39 PM skunkworks: I think there has been some parts? Plus they are re-designing it to used descrete componants.. But I haven't been keeping up...
05:39 PM JT-Shop: windblows 10 "Microsoft needs to connect to the Internet" JT "give it your best shot!"
05:40 PM skunkworks: Heh - My parents have starlink - they can actually use a windows 10 machine now...
05:40 PM skunkworks: without taking the internet down.
05:41 PM Tom_L: how's starlink workin for em?
05:41 PM skunkworks: it is pretty amazing so far..
05:41 PM Tom_L: is 10 pro better than 10 home?
05:41 PM skunkworks: they went from 1.5mbsX256kbs to 200mbsX20mbs
05:41 PM JT-Shop: yes, you have more control of stuff
05:42 PM JT-Shop: what does starlink cost?
05:42 PM Tom_L: i've been setting up PCs for the mrs and they both have 10 home
05:42 PM skunkworks: 499 for hardware and 100 a month
05:42 PM * JT-Shop keeps looking at the 1/4" of dust on the now clean desk
05:43 PM JT-Shop: that's not bad, is that for unlimited?
05:43 PM skunkworks: so far..
05:43 PM Tom_L: they'll get ya hooked then give you the bad news
05:43 PM skunkworks: maybe.. But I think they will have the infrastructure compared to all the other to allow for much higher download limits..
05:44 PM skunkworks: they will have over 30k sats compared to 1 or 2 of the others. plus the leo sats have pretty good latenchy
05:44 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:45 PM JT-Shop: mine is $50 a month
05:45 PM skunkworks: they will have over 30k sats compared to 1 or 2 of the others. plus the leo sats have pretty good latenchy
05:45 PM skunkworks: I don't remember what I payed when I had hughs net..
05:45 PM Tom_L: my cable is ~80 after tax or whatever they add in
05:45 PM JT-Shop: looks like they launch a bunch of sats at one time
05:45 PM JT-Shop: too much I'd bet
05:46 PM JT-Shop: hughs net is terrible
05:46 PM skunkworks: 40 a launch and they have been doing them ever week or 2
05:46 PM skunkworks: JT-Shop: what service do you have?
05:47 PM JT-Shop: viasat used to be blue something
05:47 PM skunkworks: what are your speeds and cap?
05:48 PM skunkworks: (lots of people moving from viasat to starlink.. but there is a backlog currently)
05:48 PM JT-Shop: 10GB a month metered, unlimited 4am to 8am
05:48 PM Tom_L: jt is a night owl :)
05:48 PM JT-Shop: speed is ok when it's not raining
05:48 PM JT-Shop: dunno Tom_L has been getting up before me lately
05:49 PM Tom_L: my kid gets up at 4 so i'm usually up
05:49 PM skunkworks: So far rain and snow hasn't taken their internt down...
05:51 PM JT-Shop: I don't think my dish is pointed quite right as the machine shop settled a bit in one corner due to a rookie mistake
05:56 PM Tom_L: this is so much easier setting up tools in an editor than thru the cad program
06:01 PM JT-Shop: what all are you setting up?
06:26 PM BitEvil is now known as SpeedEvil
06:27 PM Tom_itx: JT-Cave, that .250 rougher i got the other day and these 3 new 60 deg helix, .187, .250 and .375
06:27 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
06:28 PM Tom_L: i've got 40 tools in it so far and i'll gradually adjust them as i use them and then go edit the ones for brass and steel
06:29 PM XXCoder: my woooooooood filaments arrived!
06:29 PM Tom_L: how do you print wood?
06:29 PM XXCoder: by printing wood... in pla
06:29 PM XXCoder: traits is interesting, it can be sanded and varnished similiar to wood
06:30 PM Tom_L: i thought that's what ikea was :)
06:30 PM XXCoder: lol
06:42 PM Tom_L: JT-Cave, and i set the lcnc tool table up to match so my cad can spit out a tool # and i'll know what H word to set
06:45 PM Tom_L: when i did it for my bud i had a word setup sheet with the tool list, vise or fixture orientation and what Position it was for, P1,2,3 etc
08:04 PM drdoc: @anybody: The 3.2A NEMA 23 steppers I'll be running came with 1m of either 20 or 22awg wiring, no connector at the motor
08:06 PM drdoc: also no shielding. I'll have to extend all but one anyway, so I'm thinking about chopping off the 20awg at the motor in favor of 18awg shielded.
08:06 PM drdoc: opinions?
08:06 PM Tom_L: yes
08:06 PM Tom_L: i used 18 shield
08:07 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Wire1.jpg
08:08 PM drdoc: it's kind of a "might as well" situation
08:09 PM drdoc: Tom_L: I went with silicone-jacketed
08:10 PM Tom_L: meh, overkill
08:10 PM drdoc: eh
08:10 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Final_Wiring2.jpg
08:10 PM Tom_L: i just used shrinkwrap and ran a wire from shield to the frame
08:10 PM Tom_L: stepper frame
08:10 PM drdoc: it was something like $0.08/ft more than the PVC
08:11 PM drdoc: that's exactly what I'm looking to do
08:12 PM drdoc: I do really like that design, btw
08:12 PM Tom_L: thanks
08:13 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Wiring/Final_Wiring3.jpg
08:13 PM Tom_L: somewhat of an overall view
08:14 PM drdoc: A "new" welder is the first item I'
08:15 PM drdoc: m buying once my living situation settles
08:15 PM Tom_L: i got a miller wirefeed
08:15 PM Tom_L: small one but i don't need a big one
08:15 PM Tom_L: it _is_ 220v though
08:15 PM Tom_L: no 110 body shop thing
08:15 PM drdoc: I had a nice Lincoln MIG,
08:16 PM drdoc: but it went with most of my tooling in a 2017 burglary
08:16 PM Tom_L: :/
08:16 PM drdoc: yeah
08:17 PM drdoc: my forge, my great-grandfather's 162lb anvil, a shop-built 2200F heat treat oven
08:17 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/Mill_Steel/Steel6.jpg
08:18 PM Tom_L: i started out with that design and very quickly abandoned it
08:18 PM drdoc: heh
08:18 PM drdoc: I see why
08:18 PM Tom_L: i still used alot of the tubes
08:18 PM drdoc: right
08:19 PM Tom_L: literally from the scrap yard
08:19 PM drdoc: but square tubing's never quite as stiff as I think it's gonna be
08:19 PM drdoc: I used to build a lot of my stuff from 1.5" and 2" angle iron
08:20 PM drdoc: salvaged from curbside bed frames
08:20 PM Tom_L: those aren't the best steel
08:20 PM drdoc: no, they usually aren't
08:21 PM drdoc: you have to pick your projects for it
08:25 PM Tom_itx: drdoc, they had a 6" square column i was gonna try to use but i couldn't lift it
08:25 PM Tom_itx: it was probably at least .500 wall
08:28 PM Tom_itx is now known as Tom_L
08:36 PM drdoc: hah!
08:37 PM drdoc: that was probably as stiff as you thought it'd be
08:38 PM Tom_L: it was stuck in the mud and wouldn't budge
08:38 PM drdoc: so this came yesterday:
08:39 PM drdoc: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H950AK4
08:39 PM drdoc: makes the prettiest crimps I ever saw
08:43 PM drdoc: Tom_L: that latency script from the forum thread, is that you that maintains it?
08:43 PM Tom_L: nope
08:45 PM drdoc: where's the threshold, running a Mesa board, where the PC is no longer the limiting factor?
08:45 PM Tom_L: that's a pcw_home question
08:50 PM drdoc: cool
09:30 PM roycroft: the people at nielsen are making me feel like a stripper
09:30 PM roycroft: i'm not sure that is their intent
09:30 PM roycroft: but i agreed to participate in their radio diary program, where i keep track of what i listen to on the radio for a week
09:31 PM Tom_L: they still do that?
09:31 PM roycroft: and since i agreed, i've been getting a letter in the mail from them every day thanking me for my help, and encouraging me to continue the diary
09:31 PM roycroft: and they tuck a $1 bill in every letter
09:31 PM roycroft: they do
09:32 PM roycroft: i've participated in the past, both for their radio ratings and their tv ratings, and they've never sent me $1 bills every day before
09:32 PM Tom_L: i don't do either enough to make it worth doing
09:34 PM roycroft: i listen to the radio probably 10-12 hours/day on average
09:34 PM roycroft: broadcast tv, maybe 10 hours/week
09:37 PM roycroft: what's odd, to me at least, is that all the $1 bills are crisp, new, uncirculated bills, and the serial numbers close enough that i'm certain neilsen buy them directly from a federal reserve bank
09:37 PM roycroft: i.e. they're not just random bundles from the local bank
09:37 PM roycroft: but all of the $1 bills are from the federal reserve bank in boston, and all the letters are postmarked in missouri
09:38 PM roycroft: and the return address on the letters is in maryland
09:38 PM roycroft: one would think the dollar bills would come from the philadelphia bank, or the chicago bank, or the st louis bank
09:38 PM roycroft: depending on where the letters are stuffed
09:39 PM roycroft: oh, maybe richmond, if they are stuffed in maryland
09:40 PM roycroft: but why would they then ship them to missouri to mail?
09:45 PM Tom_L: isn't that about what jury duty pays?
09:45 PM Tom_L: :)
09:45 PM roycroft: i'm assuming that since the letters are actually sent from missouri, they were generated there
09:46 PM roycroft: so how did the money get from boston to st louis?
09:46 PM Tom_L: on a boat?
09:46 PM Tom_L: on a plane?
09:47 PM roycroft: ok
09:47 PM roycroft: s/how/why/
09:47 PM Tom_L: no clue
09:47 PM roycroft: if you go to a bank in st louis and say "i need 50,000 crisp, new, uncirculated $1 bills", they will come from the federal reserve bank in st louis
09:47 PM roycroft: not boston
09:48 PM Tom_L: ask the quesion on your survey you turn in
09:49 PM Tom_L: tell them it's your little survey and that you appreciate them participating
09:49 PM roycroft: anyway, i'm always happy to participate in the nielsen ratings, because i'm fairly certain my listening/viewing habits are not particularly "mainstream", and it scores points for the stations i frequent that they might not otherwise get
09:49 PM Tom_L: you just never know....
10:00 PM Tom_L: roycroft, speaking of currency out of curiosity what's the largest bill you've ever seen?
10:02 PM Tom_L: interesting that some of the uncirculated ones have been discontinued
10:02 PM Tom_L: that would probably make them rare and worth quite a bit
10:03 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest59647
10:03 PM Tom_L: what that has to do with nielsen is anybody's guess...
10:04 PM roycroft: in person, a $1000 bill
10:04 PM roycroft: the largest that i've ever posessed is a $100 bill
10:04 PM Tom_L: i've seen the 1k
10:04 PM Tom_L: a friend used to work at a bank
10:05 PM Tom_L: i dunno if he kept it or what but he had it at his home
10:05 PM roycroft: the $10,000 bill was only ever used to settle accounts between federal reserve banks - they were never in general circulation
10:05 PM Tom_L: i didn't think the 1k was ever circulated either
10:10 PM roycroft: the wikipedia suggests, but does not declare, that the $5000 and $10,000 bills were never in general circulation, but the $500 and $1000 bills were uncommon
10:10 PM roycroft: none of those denominations has been printed since 1945
10:13 PM roycroft: actually, a different wikipedia article claims that the $100,00 bill is the only one that was never in circulation, and cannot be legally held
10:46 PM Bleepshop: Woot! Just did a re-wire of the power systems in the CNC so that in addition to the SSR for the spindle there's an SSR tied across the 5V feed from the PC controlling the worklight and monitor, another one for the mist coolant and a spare to control the vacuum since I had the room for it and the control signal to run it.
10:46 PM XXCoder: awesome
10:47 PM Bleepshop: Yeah, I got sick of bouncing around like a jumping bean to get the whole setup powered up or down. LOL
10:49 PM XXCoder: lol
10:49 PM Bleepshop: Now it's flip the hard switch for the PC on and wait 5-10 seconds for it to light up like an arcade machine. :D
10:49 PM Bleepshop: Tell it to power off and it shuts down gracefully like a real machine should.
10:54 PM XXCoder: nice
10:54 PM XXCoder: it dont overburden one point of power system?
10:55 PM Bleepshop: Power comes in to terminal strips and gets bus-barred and split out from there.
10:56 PM _unreal_: so I finally got the fan controller setup more or less in my laser etcher case
10:56 PM _unreal_: I just need to mount the second fan get the wire run done.
10:56 PM _unreal_: and build the custom little controller with manual controls
10:57 PM _unreal_: I tell you guys what.... that freaking set of fans I have are SOME powerful
10:59 PM Bleepshop: There's one like this for the exhaust for the laser at the Santa Fe makerspace. You could strap a pair on a shopping cart and get a Darwin Award pretty quick. 11:50 PM roycroft: in spite of people complaining about what i charge for my tools/machines that i sell, i think i'm pricing the stuff too low
11:50 PM roycroft: almost everything i post sells within a day, even the more uncommon tools/machines
11:54 PM XXCoder: lol
11:54 PM XXCoder: think everyone complain to rry lower [price
11:54 PM roycroft: yes
11:55 PM roycroft: even when i say "price is firm" right in the ad, and repeat in email
11:55 PM roycroft: the buyer always tries to talk me down anyway
11:55 PM XXCoder: maybe put in "not even god can lower this price"
11:55 PM roycroft: but as i said, almost everything i put up for sale sells within a day or so
11:56 PM roycroft: part of the reason is that i take pretty good care of my stuff
11:56 PM roycroft: and i also spend time cleaning up/refurbishing things before posting them
11:56 PM roycroft: and i take lots of pictures
11:59 PM XXCoder: whats good hole size for wood screw?
