01:03 AM XXCoder: Bleep-CNC: printing 4th prototype lol
01:38 AM Deejay: moin
01:53 AM Bleep-CNC: Time to go fall over and finish cleaning up this mess tomorrow.
04:31 AM Tom_L: morning
05:25 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:49 AM rs[m]: finally. managed to build a working rt preempt kernel for asus tinkerboard. max jitter seems to be excellent.
05:50 AM XXCoder: nice
05:51 AM rs[m]: worst spikes are while starting firefox, ca. +-100µ, running glxgears, imgui demo and watching a video with mpv keeps it below 25µs
05:51 AM XXCoder: try 24/7 fireplace livestream
05:52 AM XXCoder: that has bit less buffering so it keeps computer busy
05:52 AM XXCoder: and its constantly changing
05:52 AM rs[m]: i'm using mpv and youtube-dl, tinkerboard isn't really beefy enough to use a browser to watch youtube
05:53 AM XXCoder: ahh oh well lol
05:53 AM XXCoder: the fireplace is always my favorite for testing
05:53 AM rs[m]: (you need HW acceleration for video decode and i'm not sure any browsers support that)
05:55 AM rs[m]: std-dev is around 1.2µ
05:56 AM rs[m]: i wonder what influence spectre mitigations have on worst-case latency
07:02 AM JT-Cave: for a moment I was thinking lxqt was a good desktop but it has some annoying features like no auto login and do you really want to reboot?
07:14 AM veegee: JT-Cave why not just use KDE?
07:14 AM veegee: KDE has been consistently great for 20+ years
07:16 AM unreal is now known as Guest20105
07:16 AM veegee: JT-Cave also the login is managed by the display manager, not the desktop environment
07:16 AM veegee: So just configure your display manager properly. And you can fix the reboot confirmation by editing a few lines of the code haha
08:32 AM Guest20105 is now known as _unreal_
08:58 AM skunkworks: Tom_L: Thank you!
09:26 AM jymmmm: morning
09:35 AM Tom_L: welcome
09:35 AM Tom_L: hi jymmmm
09:42 AM jymmmm: Hi Tom_L
09:42 AM jymmmm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__APTMaqi-c
09:43 AM jymmmm: Pump empty olympis swimming pool in 3 seconds
09:56 AM perry_j1987: morning
11:59 AM roycroft: hello
12:00 PM roycroft: do folks convert turret lathes to cnc, and if so, can the turret rotation be automated?
12:00 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
12:00 PM roycroft: i'm talking about the old hardinge or clausing lathes
12:00 PM roycroft: not purpose-made cnc turret lathes
12:00 PM Tom_L: yes
12:00 PM Tom_L: and yes
12:01 PM roycroft: what kind of machanism is used to rotate the turret?
12:01 PM roycroft: mechanism
12:17 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/show-your-stuff/34456-hardinge-hc-lathe-cnc-conversion
12:19 PM roycroft: thanks
12:28 PM JT-Cave: mine is lift and rotate
12:29 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/shop/hardinge/hardinge-gallery.xhtml
12:35 PM Bleepshop: JT-Cave: Now I'm jealous... You've got a concrete floor! LOL
12:35 PM JT-Cave: :)
12:36 PM JT-Cave: the first photos are in my garage and the latter ones in my machine shop
12:36 PM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/equipment-shed/
12:37 PM JT-Cave: hmm I wonder why they all have the same date?
12:38 PM Tom_L: did you move them?
12:38 PM Bleepshop: Upload date orhte last time thy were copied.
12:38 PM * Bleepshop has a sneezing fit.
12:42 PM Bleepshop: Hard to type when sneezing. Got too many oddball keyboards with slightly different layouts and wierd key spacings to rely on touch typing for everything. LOL
12:45 PM JT-Cave: must have copied them somehow and changed the dates
12:51 PM Tom_L: anxious to try these out: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60deg_3flute1.jpg
12:51 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/cutters/60deg_3flute2.jpg
12:53 PM JT-Cave: for steel?
12:53 PM Tom_L: alum
12:54 PM JT-Cave: wild looking
12:54 PM Tom_L: should give a better surface finish and better chip evacuation
12:54 PM JT-Cave: for deep slots and stuff?
12:54 PM Tom_L: i had some others that weren't quite that high a helix
12:54 PM Tom_L: they would work good on that yes
12:56 PM Tom_L: near as i can tell they are center cutting too
12:56 PM Tom_L: one blade is closer to center than the other 2
12:56 PM JT-Cave: ya that's what I see
12:57 PM Tom_L: they make a 5 flute .250 for hardened steel though
12:57 PM Tom_L: special high temp coating
12:57 PM Tom_L: those guys make some good cutters
12:58 PM JT-Cave: aye I've been using them for a long time
12:58 PM Tom_L: shame you had to introduce me to them
12:58 PM JT-Cave: lol
12:58 PM Tom_L: they have a pocket thinning effect
12:59 PM Tom_L: those little roughers i got from them are awesome
12:59 PM JT-Cave: aye they are sharp and will cut a hole in your pocket
01:03 PM Tom_L: i'm just glad i don't hav ea big cnc or the cutter cost would be 4x that
01:06 PM JT-Cave: usually anything over 1/2" I use an insert em
01:07 PM JT-Cave: I have a couple of 3/4" insert em and one 1"
01:24 PM Tom_L: nice
01:25 PM Tom_L: i'm not going bigger than 3/8" on this little mill
01:26 PM Tom_L: one thing, it beats those threaded mill holders on too tight
01:35 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Ooh shiny... ;D Looks like nice cutters.
02:57 PM JT-Shop: I'm impressed, I cleaned 25 years of dust off of my Generac G1000 and put a bit of gas in an she cranked after 3 pulls!
03:10 PM Tom_L: trying to find variable descriptions for my tool setup file on an outdated version is a pita
03:37 PM JT-Shop: some kind of program?
03:40 PM Tom_L: for my cad cam
03:41 PM Tom_L: i can get to the tool setups thru the program but i want to hand edit them
03:42 PM Tom_L: i found a little on it but would like to find more
03:50 PM JT-Shop: ah
04:06 PM Tom_L: sometimes it doesn't let me save it thru the program which can be frustrating
04:22 PM JT-Shop: yeah that can suck
04:23 PM JT-Shop: what feed per rev do you use for drilling? I see .001" per 0.125" and sometimes 3 times that
04:24 PM JT-Shop: err 001 per 1/16
04:26 PM JT-Shop: http://www.norsemandrill.com/feeds-speeds-drill.php
04:26 PM Tom_L: put fswizzard on your phone
04:26 PM Tom_L: i use it now and then
04:27 PM JT-Shop: I'm making some spreadsheets to print out so I don't have to use my calculator that I wrote
04:28 PM Tom_L: bak in a few... gotta run a quick errand
04:47 PM roycroft: lovely
04:47 PM roycroft: the sun was shining, there was a zero percent change of rain for the next 10 days
04:47 PM roycroft: i hung out my laundry to dry, and stained some cedar boards for my gazebo that need to not be rained on for 3 dyas
04:48 PM roycroft: then i went to the store
04:48 PM roycroft: clouds rolled over, and it started raining
04:48 PM roycroft: this all happened in the course of less than 5 minutes
04:49 PM roycroft: fortunately it did not rain hard, and it appears to be clearing up, but i don't know how that's going to affect the stain
04:55 PM JT-Shop: I'm liking this spreadsheet for drilling speeds and feeds
04:59 PM JT-Shop: I think I can rearrange it for easier reading
05:06 PM XXCoder: hey all
05:06 PM JT-Shop: yo
05:07 PM XXCoder: whats up?
05:07 PM XXCoder: im working on game peg board design lol
05:07 PM XXCoder: i'll 3d print it when done
05:07 PM JT-Shop: winding down my day working on a spreadsheet for drilling speeds and feeds instead of a calculator I can just look at it
05:07 PM XXCoder: nice
05:08 PM XXCoder: can make nice poster out of it
05:09 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, one you made or found?
05:09 PM Tom_L: i like those drill chart posters tool vendors used to hand out
05:10 PM JT-Shop: I'm making it
05:10 PM Tom_L: ok i found a few of the variable names in my post documentation
05:20 PM JT-Shop: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/sx24RK88Yp/
05:20 PM JT-Shop: columns don't line up in a paste
05:20 PM XXCoder: its lined up here
05:20 PM XXCoder: linux tend to deal with tabs pretty good
05:21 PM XXCoder: while windows tend to treat it as "5 spaces" and dont align anything
05:21 PM JT-Shop: oh did you copy and paste it to a text file?
05:21 PM XXCoder: a second
05:22 PM XXCoder: xed dont deal with tabs properly it seems lol
05:22 PM Tom_L: where's all the number / letter drills ?!
05:22 PM Tom_L: :)
05:22 PM XXCoder: or some was changed into spaces
05:22 PM XXCoder: lemme try someything
05:24 PM XXCoder: geany formats it pretty quickly with some more tabs
05:26 PM XXCoder: columns changing number widths is causing tab alignment a bit lol
05:26 PM XXCoder: so some of those you need extra tab to align
05:26 PM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/files/machining/speeds-feeds.ods
05:26 PM JT-Shop: there's the spreadsheet
05:27 PM XXCoder: actuallyu
05:27 PM XXCoder: its better to use spaces
05:27 PM JT-Shop: well they are close enough to fractions it's not worth the effort
05:28 PM JT-Shop: it's interesting that the feed rate is the same for all diameters for each SFM
05:29 PM JT-Shop: the plus/minus is to the total feed per rev
05:29 PM XXCoder: https://dpaste.com/93K42S8XA
05:29 PM XXCoder: that'll align in anything or in least should be
05:29 PM XXCoder: oops i got one off
05:29 PM JT-Shop: two
05:29 PM XXCoder: sigh yeah lol
05:30 PM JT-Shop: did you look at the spreadsheet?
05:30 PM Tom_L: i did
05:30 PM XXCoder: looking now
05:30 PM XXCoder: nice indeed
05:31 PM XXCoder: now slap some graphic above it, and add footer
05:31 PM XXCoder: make a nice poster ;)
05:31 PM JT-Shop: the first two pages were figuring it out the best layout
05:31 PM Tom_L: and a HP chart
05:32 PM Tom_L: i _was_ gonna test those cutters but i got hung up on my tool file. now i wanna fix it
05:33 PM JT-Shop: I was cleaning but got side tracked with this spreadsheet lol
05:33 PM XXCoder: jt tom btw the game board im talking about is open source and interesting game idea
05:33 PM XXCoder: most people make theirs out of wood with cnc, or 3d print it
05:33 PM XXCoder: my cnc router is still out of comission, so im 3d printing it lol
05:33 PM XXCoder: fopr extra challenge im making my own board and peices design also
05:34 PM XXCoder: https://www.pagat.com/race/pegsandjokers.html
05:41 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:54 PM JT-Shop: interesting
05:56 PM XXCoder: yeah
05:56 PM XXCoder: its like more strategic version of the pop dice center game. forgot name of that one
05:56 PM XXCoder: with teams
05:57 PM XXCoder: 4 players, 2 working with each other, 6 players, 3 vs 3, 8 players, 4 vs 4
06:00 PM JT-Shop: a buddy and me use to play doom online back in 57k modem days and tie up the phone for hours
06:02 PM XXCoder: lol fun
06:02 PM XXCoder: doom lan parties
06:02 PM XXCoder: and hunting down loose terminator cap
06:10 PM JT-Shop: time to lock up and go check the chicken soup... no not my chickens
06:16 PM XXCoder: lol
06:40 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
07:13 PM XXCoder: wow
07:13 PM XXCoder: this is weird clamp found by nmyfordboy https://youtu.be/vEIRG8XXVnk
07:13 PM XXCoder: wood screw too
07:15 PM XXCoder: MITER JACK VISE apparently
07:15 PM XXCoder: https://youtu.be/4Cuj-_R20xE
07:18 PM Tom_L: ok i finally figured out what these damn vars do
07:23 PM roycroft: so my initial impression of that rustoeum rust remover is that it looks like it will work fine, but the spray bottle is a stupid idea
07:24 PM roycroft: the gel is way too thick to spray effectively
07:24 PM roycroft: it's a lot of work pumping the sprayer, and i had to use a chip brush to spread it evenly after i applied it anyway
07:24 PM roycroft: it would be better just to sell it in a can that one can pour into a jar or dip a brush into
07:25 PM roycroft: and my other reaction is to the youtuber who demoed it and said he did not know if it's ok to get on his skin or not, but he wasn't wearing gloves
07:25 PM roycroft: you're a moron
07:25 PM roycroft: i could smell the phosphoric acid with the first bit that came out of the sprayer
07:26 PM roycroft: it's not going to eat your skin away instantly, but you really don't want to touch the stuff
07:26 PM Tom_L: spray foam
07:26 PM roycroft: if it were a spray foam that would be fine
07:26 PM roycroft: but it's a gel
07:26 PM roycroft: it doesn't level out
07:26 PM roycroft: well, it does, with the help of a brush
07:27 PM roycroft: but on its own it doesn't
07:27 PM roycroft: i'll find out in a few minutes how well it actually works, but i think it will be fine
07:27 PM * roycroft wore gloves, btw
07:28 PM XXCoder: yeah always read msha sheets on chemicals
07:29 PM roycroft: i'll admit to not having done so with this stuff
07:30 PM roycroft: but i knew what to expect, and it looks and smells and behaves exactly as i expected
07:30 PM XXCoder: well can always read the can also it usually lists dangers etc
07:30 PM roycroft: yes
07:30 PM roycroft: or
07:30 PM roycroft: if you can smell the acid, don't let it touch your skin
07:30 PM roycroft: at least start with that
07:31 PM XXCoder: yeah
07:31 PM XXCoder: i cant smell so its reading for me lol
07:32 PM roycroft: you an almost "feel" it working after applying it if you get your hands close to it
07:32 PM roycroft: without touching it
07:32 PM XXCoder: thats very safe way to find out lol
07:32 PM XXCoder: me, i rather be lazy and read lol
07:33 PM roycroft: the boards i stained today seem to have survived the light rain, btw
07:33 PM roycroft: no weirness
07:33 PM roycroft: weirdness
07:33 PM XXCoder: nice
07:42 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
08:17 PM SpeedEvil is now known as Guest75
08:18 PM roycroft: so the rustoleum product works pretty well
08:18 PM roycroft: i had a couple areas that had slightly more than surface rust, and it did not get all of that converted, but i can take care of those areas easily with my rotary sander and a scotchbrite pad
08:19 PM roycroft: the product did not damage the paint at all, which is great
08:20 PM XXCoder: yeah, i used it in my first car
08:20 PM XXCoder: spare tire area in thunk flooded for whatever long it was flooded
08:20 PM XXCoder: there as so much rust
08:20 PM XXCoder: I just scubbed off as much as I can, then rustoleum
08:20 PM XXCoder: it lasted all way to breakdown
