12:19 AM CaptHindsight: $23 https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/32bit-Arm-platform-Smooth-control-board_60696622311.html
12:26 AM CaptHindsight: ^^ + Rpi4 over SPI for low cost LCNC controller
12:26 AM XXCoder: interesting
12:26 AM CaptHindsight: using https://remora-docs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/intro/intro.html
12:26 AM CaptHindsight: "Some instability in SPI communication needs to be resolved."
12:26 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.biqu.equipment/products/btt-skr-v1-4-skr-v1-4-pro
12:26 AM CaptHindsight: https://www.bigtree-tech.com/products/btt-skr-v1-4-skr-v1-4-turbo-32-bit-control-board.html
12:29 AM W1N9Zr0: those are non-open-source derivatives of smoothieboard, smoothieware devs don't like 'em http://smoothieware.org/troubleshooting#what-is-wrong-with-mks
12:30 AM CaptHindsight: you don't use their firmware anyway
12:30 AM W1N9Zr0: they run marlin great though, can't complain
12:30 AM CaptHindsight: you replace it with Remora
12:31 AM CaptHindsight: finally a use for a Poopieboard!
12:32 AM CaptHindsight: Chinese clone of smoothie, that gets new open firmware, take that you copycat!
12:33 AM CaptHindsight: I should spin a LPC1768 board with better IO's and connectors for real CNC machines
12:38 AM W1N9Zr0: skr 2.0 just came out recently too, even faster processor, stm32f4 @ 160mhz
12:38 AM CaptHindsight: leak it to the Chinese to copy so I can buy it for $25ea
12:38 AM CaptHindsight: yeah, we really don't need the lpc1768
12:38 AM CaptHindsight: a $1 STM32 will do
12:38 AM CaptHindsight: the problem will be the $25 board will have crappy parts on it
01:04 AM Deejay: moin
02:21 AM Loetmichel: **giggle** Coworker just: "hey, that PC is heavy!" $me:"Nah, its just 25kg." Other coworker:"Just because you fell into the magic potion as a kid and like to eat whole wild boars doesn't mean that isn't heavy!"... Now i don't know if I should feel proud to be called "Obelix" or dejected. I certainly have the correct body type. :)
02:37 AM bjorkintosh: getafix was careless to have allowed a small child to fall into the cauldron.
02:37 AM bjorkintosh: or maybe, it was an experiment!
02:38 AM XXCoder: "acciental"
02:38 AM XXCoder: if they dipped every child they'd have unbreakable solders
02:39 AM bjorkintosh: why did they stop at obelix?
02:46 AM Loetmichel: bjorkintosh: because that would have made the story a bit hard to write?
02:46 AM bjorkintosh: why? they grouped all the roman soldiers together...
02:46 AM bjorkintosh: they could lump all the obelixis together too!
02:47 AM bjorkintosh: my favorite story of them all is Obelix & Co :-)
02:47 AM bjorkintosh: the roman economist was the perfect economist. lots of hot air, and nothing useful to contribute.
04:42 AM Tom_L: morning
04:43 AM veegee: Ok I can't believe I missed the obvious
04:43 AM veegee: Cheap old battery powered hand drills
04:44 AM veegee: Very inexpensive way to get high torque DC motor/gearbox
04:45 AM veegee: They're perfect for making high torque servos. Easy motor braking too since they're all permanent magnet motors.
05:20 AM rs[m]: veegee: those gearboxes/motors have very limited lifetime and suffer from backlash and inadequate cooling
05:35 AM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
05:42 AM JT-Cave: morning
10:49 AM veegee: rs[m] yeah for sure
10:49 AM veegee: well backlash yes, a lot
11:10 AM mrec: did anyone change the leadscrew of a lathe to ballscrew?
11:11 AM mrec: I'm looking at a 1002 ballscrew for that but maybe there's a better option
11:11 AM mrec: I just want to get rid of the backlash it will make things easier.
11:11 AM mrec: (mostly get rid of the backlash a small one is still ok)
11:17 AM roycroft: a lot of people have done that
11:20 AM mrec: I'm just sourcing parts now maybe there are some cheap 10mm ones (aside of TBI)
11:20 AM mrec: otherwise I'll just go for TBI for the crossslide
11:33 AM enleth: mrec: make sure to install a cross slide lock if the lathe doesn't have one
11:34 AM enleth: ballscrews can be backdriven by cutting forces very easily
11:34 AM roycroft: i think his plan is a cnc conversion
11:35 AM enleth: ah, ok
11:37 AM mrec: yes I already started to draw it, maybe I should just go with the ballscrew first
11:37 AM mrec: I have already converted my mini mill some time ago
11:50 AM roycroft: so i just spoke with the broach vendor
11:51 AM roycroft: they informed me that broaches and collars are generally interchangeable amongst brands, but the particular brand of broach i purchased only works properly with collars from the same manufacturer
11:51 AM roycroft: they sell those collars, but they are not showing up on their website, and they're working on fixing that
11:51 AM roycroft: they have offered to let me return the collar i purchased and replace it with the proper one
11:52 AM roycroft: even though it is now used
11:52 AM roycroft: i think i'm fine with this
11:53 AM roycroft: it's a metric broach and collar, and i'm unlikely to cut more metric keyways
11:54 AM roycroft: but if i do, i can only see needing maybe two more broaches at most - i have m4, and i might need m3 and m5, if any, so using this brand for metric and using more interchangeable brands for american customary would be fine
11:57 AM roycroft: two more metric broaches, i meant
12:51 PM Tom_L: roycroft, you can borrow my M5 if you come get it :)
12:51 PM Tom_L: i likely won't use it too many more times
02:18 PM drdoc: roycroft: sounds like a decent vendor
02:24 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
02:40 PM roycroft: yeah
02:40 PM roycroft: and two trips to the recycling center later, and i'm able to cut the back yard almost completely for the first time since last year
02:41 PM roycroft: so i've had a productive morning
02:42 PM CaptHindsight: dropping off or picking up?
02:43 PM CaptHindsight: at one of the recycling centers near here people pick through it daily for valuable scrap
02:43 PM roycroft: dropping off
02:44 PM roycroft: last week i hauled over a tree that came down last fall
02:44 PM roycroft: today, some bamboo that i had cut last fall, and all the branches that had fallen off trees over the winter
02:44 PM roycroft: i also hauled some construction debris last week
02:45 PM roycroft: i still have a load or two for the metal scrap yard, and a load for the dump
02:45 PM roycroft: but i can work around that stuff today
02:45 PM roycroft: my dump load is not a full load yet, but i anticipate it shall be by next weekend
02:45 PM * roycroft actually enjoys spring tidying up
04:49 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
04:58 PM * Bleepshop hunts all over the gmoccapy gui and fails to find a "Load File" button leaving him going "WTH ?".
05:00 PM veegee: I replaced the fittings on my sum-ting-wong vacuum pump with proper hydraulic flare fittings and that helped improve the vacuum pressure from -0.97 bar to -0.99 bar. That's still not good enough
05:00 PM veegee: That's still 1,000 Pa too high
05:00 PM veegee: Also why the hell is the vacuum pressure gauge showing values relative to atmospheric pressure
05:00 PM veegee: It should be showing absolute pressure
05:01 PM veegee: -0.99 bar is not very helpful when atmospheric pressure can vary significantly, like 2 orders of magnitude compared to absolute vacuum pressure
05:01 PM Tom_L: Bleepshop, the 'file' icon lower left
05:02 PM Bleepshop: veegee: Because it'd take a hell of a long sampling tube to out of the atmosphere ? ;D
05:02 PM * Tom_L looks at Bleepshop and wonders wtf
05:02 PM veegee: Bleepshop yeah I thought of that, but I feel like I'm missing something
05:02 PM veegee: there has to be a way to measure absolute pressure
05:03 PM veegee: I mean there definitely is, but a reasonably economical way
05:03 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: My lower left is a Home Axis menu button.
05:03 PM Tom_L: http://linuxcnc.org/docs/2.8/html/gui/gmoccapy.html
05:04 PM veegee: https://www.robinair.com/products/digital-micron-vacuum-gauge $200 but worth it for my science experiments
05:04 PM veegee: sum-ting-wong pressure gauges just can't be trusted for anything but relative measurements
05:05 PM Tom_L: it changes depending what screen you're in
05:06 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Apparently I'm missing a bunch of buttons. Or I haven't figured out how to tell this it's homed and get it to give me the screen.
05:06 PM Tom_L: i don't use it so i can't help
05:06 PM Tom_L: others do so i'm sure there's a way to load a file
05:06 PM Tom_L: it probably does need to be homed first
05:07 PM DaViruz: i find good ionization vacuum gauges are pretty cheap and ubiquitous on ebay
05:08 PM Tom_L: veegee, does hu-flung-dung sell em?
05:08 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: No, These are from Hu-Fok-Chu. ;D
05:10 PM Bleepshop: I was actually going to say why not try a basic vacuum tube and evacuate it down till the electrons are getting there.
05:13 PM andypugh: veegee: Penning gauge?
05:15 PM andypugh: Pirani gauge might be cheaper
05:16 PM andypugh: This os going back to my PhD 35 years ago, Absolute vacuuum gauges are probaby $1 from Banggood with an SPI interface by now.
05:17 PM DaViruz: in my hobby chamber i have a combination hot cathode-pirani gauge for getting an overall idea of pressure and a penning gauge for higher resolution of high vacuum
05:18 PM DaViruz: they were probably less than $100 together on ebay
05:18 PM DaViruz: and since they agree very well i'm pretty confident in them
05:18 PM veegee: andypugh hard time trusting $1 anything from banggood
05:19 PM veegee: they can barely speak fucking english in 2021
05:19 PM veegee: that's pathetic
05:19 PM veegee: I'm going to look at good quality gauges because I want to be able to trust my measurements
05:20 PM veegee: Same reason I have mitutoyo instruments
05:20 PM Bleepshop: veegee: They consider the fact that we can't speak Chinese pathetic as well, LOL
05:20 PM veegee: well English is a worldwide standard, especially in academia
05:20 PM veegee: so no one gives a shit that they're illiterate
05:20 PM veegee: I speak three languages, and English isn't my first
05:21 PM veegee: But it's the _correct_ one so obviously I made an effort to learn it properly
05:22 PM andypugh: More people speak Chinese than English. (I think)
05:22 PM Bleepshop: veegee: Yeah, but be honest. Have you ever managed to pick up a date while carrying on a conversation in FORTRAN ? ;D
05:22 PM veegee: I don't care if it's Chinese or French, it's fucking pathetic if you can't speak English in this day and age
05:22 PM veegee: I know fortran but I have zero use for it
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: they wouldn't even ask me to proofread English when I was there
05:23 PM andypugh: Hmm, I was wrong, but it is close: Rank Language Total Speakers
05:23 PM andypugh: 1 English 1,132 million
05:23 PM andypugh: 2 Mandarin Chinese 1,117 million
05:23 PM veegee: CaptHindsight yup that
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: not really a priority there
05:23 PM veegee: they don't even try to get it right
05:23 PM veegee: like zero effort
05:23 PM CaptHindsight: you buy
05:23 PM veegee: If you're a local fisherman in China or wherever else and speak only the local language, that's fine
05:24 PM andypugh: English is, objectively, a terriblr langiage
05:24 PM veegee: Chinese is worse
05:24 PM veegee: one character per word like wtf
05:24 PM Bleepshop: Anybody awake using gmoccapy? I need to Home this beast without the Home switches installed so I can do a pen test.
05:24 PM DaViruz: Bleepshop: that wouldn't even work for Grace Hopper, you'd need to speak COBOL for that
05:24 PM andypugh: Writing and speaking are different.
05:24 PM CaptHindsight: don't complain, nobody care
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: now you buy
05:25 PM DaViruz: i think most languages are pretty terrible in that regard
05:25 PM DaViruz: if not in most regards
05:25 PM andypugh: Bleepshop: Try the Forum, Norbert lives German Time.
05:26 PM Bleepshop: DaViruz: I could fake it. I was fluent in ASM on the 65xx/68xxx years ago. xD
05:26 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: are the home switches connected?
05:27 PM andypugh: Wht fascinates me is that two Chinese can read the same newspaper in different languages, and a Japansee can get the gist of it whilst all making very different noises. Whereas I can read an Italian newspaper and make nearly the right noises but have no idea what they mean.
05:28 PM drdoc: difference in symbologies
05:28 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Not at the momen, I need to decide whether to use the switch locations it had [Front/Left} or install a new set to make it park [Right/Rear].
05:29 PM CaptHindsight: the same Chinese is not even spoken the same there, friends from the north around Beijing might only get 50% of what others would speak in the south
05:30 PM Bleepshop: I also need to figure out which way +/- should move each axis.
05:30 PM CaptHindsight: you don't complain since nobody there cares, you just buy now
05:30 PM drdoc: When I have the switches available but not mounted, I tend to connect them and trigger them by hand for testing & faux homing
05:30 PM andypugh: English has arguably too many words with location-dependent gradiings of emphasis. What is the difference between “I will fetch you one” and “I will get you one” ?
05:31 PM CaptHindsight: fetch sounds either pompous or what your dog does
05:31 PM Bleepshop: drdoc: Z- is down, X- is right and Y- is toward the front edge which seems ass-backward to me for htat axis.
05:31 PM andypugh: And then “get” is irregular: I will get one, I got one….
05:31 PM veegee: "get" is what you say when you have to kill someone for it
05:31 PM drdoc: and then there are "bring" and "take"
05:32 PM veegee: but don't want to reveal the actual means of acquisition
05:32 PM drdoc: Bleepshop: that sounds normal
05:32 PM CaptHindsight: get, got, git
05:32 PM andypugh: CaptHindsight: Location-dependent…
05:33 PM drdoc: if you're looking at a cartesian grid, Y+ is toward the top of the grid (away from your PoV) and Y- toward the bottom, toward you
05:33 PM Bleepshop: There's a 'Gits get got' joke there somewhere. ;D
05:34 PM andypugh: <rant> At a counter at a bar or similar “Can I get a ….” is _always_ wrong. They wlll get one for you. You can have, buy, sample… one, bt _they_ will get it.
05:34 PM veegee: Either way, just because of how much it's used, English is the most versatile
05:34 PM drdoc: and in some places "got" is an acceptable synonym for "gotten"
05:34 PM CaptHindsight: muricans also like to drop syllables
05:34 PM veegee: even if it's not the best, it's a worldwide standard
05:34 PM veegee: so they need to learn it and not waste everyone else's time
05:34 PM andypugh: drdoc: “gotten” is not even a word here.
05:35 PM drdoc: my point
05:35 PM drdoc: here, they are not interchangeable
05:35 PM drdoc: CaptHindsight: unless it's "-ate"
05:35 PM drdoc: orientate
05:35 PM drdoc: conversate
05:36 PM drdoc: all leading to "infuriate"
05:36 PM drdoc: ;-)
05:36 PM veegee: I've never had an issue reading datasheets written in English
05:36 PM veegee: like not once has there been anything close to confusion
05:36 PM CaptHindsight: English is constantly evolving
05:36 PM veegee: I can read datasheets written 40 years ago
05:37 PM CaptHindsight: those rules we learned in school are transient
05:37 PM veegee: so while the shitty slang is evolving, the basics are the same
05:37 PM veegee: But chingrish is a fucking disaster
05:37 PM DaViruz: andypugh: is that something a bartender will actually notice?
05:37 PM CaptHindsight: it's fun
05:37 PM veegee: It's really not when you have real work to do
05:37 PM DaViruz: as in they will look strangely at you for saying it that way
05:37 PM andypugh: Whereas in the dialect of my birth we still still distinguish between thee and thou… “Don’t thee “thee” me, thee” makes perfect sense in an aggrieved tone.
05:38 PM drdoc: veegee: chingrish is a direct function of "the race to the bottom"
05:38 PM veegee: At this point I gladly spend the money for products with well-written datasheets
05:38 PM veegee: and support that can actually speak english
05:38 PM drdoc: asian manufacturers cannot afford to provide accurate translations
05:38 PM veegee: it costs like $20/hr for a translator
05:38 PM veegee: you only need like what... 6 hours to translate any product manual
05:38 PM veegee: tops
05:38 PM veegee: You're telling me they can't afford a one time fee of $100?
05:39 PM andypugh: DaViruz: Well, geberally they will just get you what you mentioned, but if they are a cute English student they will cross you off their list. :-)
05:39 PM drdoc: you can't get a good SME translator for anywhere near $20/hr
05:39 PM veegee: I refuse to believe that. It's just an outright slap in the face
05:39 PM veegee: I bet you I can
05:39 PM veegee: I can easily find a translator that can translate an entire operating manual for a VFD for example
05:40 PM drdoc: to translate technical english to technical mandarin?
05:40 PM veegee: technical chinese to english you mean?
05:40 PM drdoc: where are you?
05:40 PM veegee: Canada
05:40 PM andypugh: I don’t think that they do the maths.
05:40 PM drdoc: then I mean to translate technical english to technical mandarin
05:40 PM veegee: as far as I know, 1+1=2 in all languages
05:40 PM DaViruz: i can't really recall what exact phrase i have used while ordering a beerin the uk
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: Please barwench, may I have another beer?
05:41 PM roycroft: i think "give us a pint" would work
05:41 PM DaViruz: my horrible swedish accent is probably more noticeable than the phrase i use
05:41 PM CaptHindsight: Swedish accents are never horrible
05:42 PM drdoc: going back to somewhat on-topic
05:43 PM roycroft: excuse me
05:43 PM roycroft: but a pint of beer is never off topic
05:43 PM drdoc: Jameco is having a clearance that includes a lot of switches and DIN connectors and such
05:43 PM drdoc: roycroft: fair point
05:43 PM roycroft: speaking of which
05:43 PM CaptHindsight: wouldst thou fetch us more ale
05:43 PM roycroft: i got some ipa today
05:44 PM CaptHindsight: vs wouldst thee fetch us more ale
05:44 PM roycroft: i'm doing yard work, and it's 27 degrees
05:44 PM roycroft: and i have not had an ipa in a long time
05:44 PM roycroft: so i'm drinking one, to help ensure that i do not get kicked out of oregon
05:44 PM drdoc: https://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDrillDownView?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&refineType=String&sub_attr_name=Clearance&refineValue=Y&from=mflisting&CID=clearancecenter&trk_msg=RKHSEAGPGMAK51G5MUT708AHH8&trk_contact=K62383SK3F7TF7CNCSEJHSSRE8&trk_sid=S283TFQ2D1BUQ4CVMFNU0IVN0K&espm=2AC723DD851942958605B7BA7021518A&espc=0F3484A11B94D7CF9D97671D38F39B72&utm_source=Listrak
05:45 PM andypugh: We used to have fun in the bar when I was a student when they sold Wadworth 6x and Castelmaine 4x at the same time. Some rounds were unambiguious (10x for example) Given that the bar staff were often doing PhDs in number theory this example of localised primes would entertian both parties.
05:45 PM drdoc: &utm_medium=Email&utm_term=Clearance+Hero&utm_campaign=LT_CLEARANCE_04162021_DI_REACTIVE&utm_content=LT_CLEARANCE_04162021_DI_REACTIVE
05:45 PM drdoc: holy crap
05:45 PM roycroft: and it's actually not untasty
05:46 PM drdoc: just go to jameco.com and click on "Clearance - Extrra Savings" in the left-side bar
06:34 PM JT-Cave: hmm seems Castelmaine has quite a few XXXX beers
06:36 PM Tom_L: sorted out my phone contact list
06:37 PM JT-Cave: how so?
06:37 PM Tom_L: got an S21
06:37 PM JT-Cave: lol
06:37 PM Tom_L: the transfer separated the entries
06:37 PM Tom_L: actually got 5
06:38 PM JT-Cave: geez I went from a S4 to a S10 and thought I was uptown
06:38 PM Tom_L: :)
06:39 PM Tom_L: i was happy with the s9 i had but a couple others were having issues and i got a better deal getting 5 over the previous 4
06:40 PM Tom_L: i'm not as hard on equipment as some of the others are
06:44 PM JT-Cave: sounds like some rabbit food is being prepared...
07:13 PM _unreal_: hello
08:03 PM roycroft: it is pizza night here
08:03 PM roycroft: even though yesterday was my friday
08:15 PM Tom_L: yum
08:45 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
09:37 PM roycroft: i went for simple tonight - just a margherita, fra diavlo
09:37 PM roycroft: there's much to be said for a simple, but well balanced pizza
09:38 PM roycroft: it doesn't need to be fancy
10:19 PM Bleepshop: Quick! It's been 30+ years since I touched G-code. What
10:20 PM Bleepshop: 's the command to offset the starting point ?
10:22 PM Bleepshop: I'm trying to run the ArcSpiral from the examples and it's got 3/4 of the pattern outside the cuttable area. I need to offset it X+2 Y+2.
10:26 PM BitEvil_ is now known as SpeedEvil
10:35 PM Tom_L: for feedrate override?
10:35 PM Tom_L: seems a bit odd
10:38 PM perry_j1987: just picked up a yamaha qt50 moped heh
10:38 PM Tom_L: no license required?
