12:25 AM Bleepshop: Well, Cabinet/table wiring is 70% done, the new old drill press is here, the PC is built and stable and the FPGA board I ordered to play with will be here tomorrow. All in all things are proceding smoothly.
01:20 AM Deejay: moin
02:15 AM XXCoder: ohhh https://hackaday.com/2021/03/31/scratch-built-co2-laser-tube-kicks-off-a-laser-cutter-build/
04:16 AM Tom_L: morning
04:16 AM XXCoder: yo
05:11 AM JT-Cave: morninm
05:12 AM XXCoder: yo
05:21 AM JT-Cave: https://www.kait8.com/2021/03/29/three-arrested-assault-kidnapping/
09:52 AM beachbumpete1: I am trying to determine a connector for a wiring connection to a circuit board here having some issues
09:53 AM beachbumpete1: this is a motor control board for remote control operation of a dc motor
09:53 AM beachbumpete1: it has limit switch controls on the board
09:53 AM beachbumpete1: but they are setup as jumpered shunt pins
09:53 AM beachbumpete1: four pins
09:53 AM beachbumpete1: two for each switch max and min travel
09:54 AM beachbumpete1: they appear to be 2.54mm smooth pins
09:54 AM beachbumpete1: like the JST RE connectors
09:54 AM beachbumpete1: but i am not sure what they are
09:54 AM beachbumpete1: anyone good with this kind of thing in here?
09:55 AM beachbumpete1: the pin spacing looks like the 2.54mm center to center
09:56 AM beachbumpete1: kinda like the pin connectors for led lighting on a pc motherboard
09:59 AM beachbumpete1: https://imgur.com/gallery/NvRhzdv
10:15 AM roycroft: beachbumpete1: this might work for you
10:15 AM roycroft: https://www.amazon.com/Glarks-Perfectly-Compatible-Connector-Assortment/dp/B07CTKD7P4
10:15 AM roycroft: you should measure the pins themselves to be sure
10:15 AM roycroft: it's hard to find those connectors individually - they're usually in sets like that
10:15 AM beachbumpete1: https://www.amazon.com/WOWOONE-620pcs-Connector-Housing-Terminal/dp/B0897KGG59/ref=sr_1_20?dchild=1&keywords=2.54MM+4+pin+connector&qid=1617287606&sr=8-20
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: this is what I was looking at
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: it is hard to determine exactly what they are
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: there are not apparent
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: locking
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: the pins are smooth
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: the base has no features
10:16 AM roycroft: the ones you're looking at might work
10:16 AM beachbumpete1: so its just friction fit I think
10:17 AM beachbumpete1: which is fine
10:17 AM beachbumpete1: this goes inside an enclosure
10:17 AM roycroft: there is another issue though - there are 2.50mm connectors and 2.54mm connectors
10:17 AM beachbumpete1: so I can add strain relief to the case
10:17 AM beachbumpete1: I know
10:17 AM roycroft: and often the asian sellers will advertise them with random sizes that are not correct
10:17 AM beachbumpete1: the best I can measure these are just over 2.5
10:17 AM roycroft: so you might order 2,54mm and get 2.50mm or vise versa
10:18 AM beachbumpete1: the difference is pretty slight I think no?
10:18 AM roycroft: for a 2 pin connector they're pretty much interchangeable
10:18 AM roycroft: if you had an a pin connector the cumulative error might make the wrong one not fit
10:18 AM roycroft: but for a 2 pin you're probably fine if you get the wrong one
10:18 AM beachbumpete1: this is four pins in a row
10:18 AM roycroft: an 8 pin, i mean
10:18 AM W1N9Zr0: looks like the standard .1" connector to me, that last amazon link is correct
10:18 AM beachbumpete1: I guess I can make it two sets of two connectors
10:19 AM roycroft: if the advertised size is correct, win9zr0
10:19 AM beachbumpete1: they both would probably work for this
10:19 AM beachbumpete1: I just did not want to have to freakin solder this thing LOL
10:20 AM W1N9Zr0: never seen this style of connector in metric. JST is usually metric, but not this style
10:20 AM roycroft: i prefer crimped connectors to soldered connectors almost any time
10:20 AM roycroft: or wire wrapping
10:20 AM W1N9Zr0: if you want to cover all your bases, you can get one of these kits: https://www.amazon.com/Qibaok-Crimping-Ratcheting-Connectors-0-1-0-5mm²/dp/B07ZK5F8HP/
10:21 AM W1N9Zr0: dupont .1" and jst 2.5mm all in one package
10:21 AM W1N9Zr0: and the correct crimper for both
10:21 AM beachbumpete1: that looks good man thank you guys
10:22 AM beachbumpete1: I will go ahead and order that one. I think it should work....
10:29 AM W1N9Zr0: i'm sure it's a dupont .1" you have there. google image search 0.1" jumper, and you'll see pictures of that connector and the jumper that's installed on them
10:31 AM beachbumpete1: NICE
10:31 AM beachbumpete1: thank you guys
10:50 AM roycroft: and the insanity continues
10:50 AM roycroft: i moved our mail servers over the weekend, and now the office printers can no longer scan to email
10:51 AM roycroft: that's because they have the ip addresses of the mail server they use hard-coded, not the hostname
10:51 AM roycroft: my boss told me to fix it
10:51 AM roycroft: first of all, they changed the ip addresses of the printers, so i had to beg him for the ip addresses so that i could log in remotely
10:52 AM roycroft: they've also changed the admin passwords, and did not document the changes in our password manager
10:52 AM roycroft: i asked him to do so and he said "i need these fucking printers working, and i don't want to hear any more excuses why you haven't gotten them working"
10:53 AM roycroft: i don't understand how asking someone to document credentials so that i can proceed is an "excuse"
10:53 AM drdoc: "I already know I fucked up but I'm never going to admit it so STFU"
10:53 AM * roycroft is glad he works from home now, as he would not want to have this conversation in person
10:54 AM roycroft: i wouldn't even all it a fuck up on his par
10:54 AM roycroft: i kind of expected it
10:54 AM * drdoc is quite content to be retired from IT
10:54 AM roycroft: it's typical
10:54 AM roycroft: i just expect that when i need something to be provided with the information so that i can do my job
10:54 AM roycroft: i did not accuse him of anything
10:55 AM drdoc: I was in on a net-segment migration once where we moved a whole floor to its own /24 sub-domain
10:55 AM roycroft: i just asked for the passwords, as they had been changed from the defaults, and the changes were not documented in a place to which i had access
10:55 AM roycroft: i did my due diligence - i looked up the default passwords for the printers on my own and tried them before i asked him
10:55 AM drdoc: it was the expected nightmare, although it went a lot better than it could have, just corner-cases and mis-documentation stuff
10:57 AM roycroft: i have a boss with attention deficit disorder
10:57 AM drdoc: I got stopped by a designer in the lab and he had a literal list of things he couldn't get to (90 minutes ago!) when he left for lunch
10:57 AM roycroft: he cannot focus on anything for more than about 15 seconds at a time
10:57 AM roycroft: everything we do is utter chaos
10:57 AM roycroft: i can draw up a migration plan, start executing it, and he'll do random things throughout the process and not tell me what he's doing
10:57 AM drdoc: I told him "man, I'm in between 8 things tight now but I'll put you up on the list. Send me that in an email cause I'll forget most of it before I get to my desk."
10:58 AM drdoc: "WHY???? I'm telling you now, why should I have to email it to you? You want me to do your jopb for you huh?>"
10:58 AM roycroft: i get that all the time
10:58 AM roycroft: as well, my house is a faraday cage
10:59 AM roycroft: i have radiant ceiling heat
10:59 AM drdoc: dude, *I* have severe ADHD
10:59 AM roycroft: as a result, my cell phone does not work inside my house
10:59 AM roycroft: so what do my boss and his kid do when they need me?
10:59 AM drdoc: it's not easy, but it's *simple* to manage
10:59 AM drdoc: call your cell
10:59 AM roycroft: they call my cell phone and sometimes leave a voicemail
10:59 AM roycroft: i have a direct extension to the office phone system
10:59 AM roycroft: dialing my extension is a 3 digit humber
10:59 AM roycroft: number
10:59 AM roycroft: dialing my cell is a 10 digit number
11:00 AM drdoc: yup
11:00 AM roycroft: we have a ticket system
11:00 AM roycroft: we have email
11:00 AM roycroft: but everything goes to my cell
11:00 AM drdoc: we have *reasons* for the process
11:00 AM roycroft: so when i leave the house at the end of the day to run errands or whatever, i get all these urgent voicemails that came in hours ago
11:00 AM roycroft: and then i get yelled at for not responding
11:00 AM roycroft: oh, i also have a pager
11:01 AM roycroft: which actually works in my house, even though the cell doesn't
11:01 AM drdoc: I had a sign on the outside of my cube
11:01 AM roycroft: the pager frequency must be able to get through the faraday cage
11:01 AM drdoc: "If I didn't get email, it didn't happen."
11:01 AM roycroft: nagios calls my pager all the time
11:01 AM drdoc: heh
11:01 AM roycroft: my boss and his kid never call it
11:01 AM drdoc: I have great love for nagios
11:01 AM roycroft: nagios lets me sleep
11:02 AM drdoc: ^^^^
11:02 AM drdoc: that
11:02 AM roycroft: because it wakes me up when i need to wake up
11:02 AM roycroft: and if it's not paging me i can sleep
11:02 AM drdoc: nagios lets me ignore the assholes
11:02 AM drdoc: and it does EXACTLY what I tell it to
11:02 AM drdoc: no less, no more
11:04 AM drdoc: I have determined that my router does not qualify for servos (vs steppers)
11:04 AM roycroft: i just need to get out of this whole rat race
11:04 AM drdoc: nor the upcoming PCB mill
11:04 AM roycroft: go back to being my own boss
11:05 AM roycroft: that way, i'll know that when the boss yells at me i'm truly deserving of his wrath
11:05 AM drdoc: roycroft: I jumped the IT ship in '14 and went back to school at 55
11:05 AM roycroft: i'm close to being able to go out on my own again
11:06 AM drdoc: I ended up couch surfing and living on food stamps for a year before it was over
11:06 AM drdoc: no regrets
11:06 AM roycroft: i had some medical issues a few years ago that put me in debt
11:06 AM drdoc: that'll do it
11:06 AM roycroft: i've been paying that off over time, and i'm at a point where it will be totally paid off soon - as in july or august
11:06 AM drdoc: oooh, very nice
11:06 AM roycroft: i need to suffer through this job at least until then
11:07 AM drdoc: I remember my last ex-wife-support payment
11:07 AM drdoc: I felt like I won a Nobel Prize or something
11:08 AM roycroft: nice
11:09 AM drdoc: I expect you'll feel about the same
11:09 AM roycroft: it will definitely be a great weight lifted from my shoulders
11:09 AM drdoc: there's satisfaction in paying a debt I meant to have
11:09 AM drdoc: paying off a bill I never wanted is a whole 'nuther level
11:10 AM roycroft: life happens
11:10 AM roycroft: and you deal with it
11:10 AM drdoc: it do
11:10 AM drdoc: and we do
11:10 AM roycroft: but that doesn't mean it always happens the way you want
11:10 AM drdoc: and today I get to play a bit
11:11 AM drdoc: I've had upgrade parts for the router stashed for months
11:12 AM drdoc: Hope to get it all together & running this week
11:12 AM roycroft: and i just got an email that says "we still cannot scan to email, and we have customers waiting"
11:12 AM roycroft: while i'm still waiting for the passwords
11:13 AM drdoc: nice
11:13 AM roycroft: i suspect they don't know the passwords
11:13 AM drdoc: I wasn't gonna say that
11:13 AM roycroft: and there's no "reset to factory defaultss" button on the printers
11:13 AM roycroft: even if there were, that would be a horrible thing to do
11:13 AM roycroft: the printers are dialed in to what they need
11:13 AM roycroft: and i *know* they have no backups of the configs
11:14 AM roycroft: if they don't know the passwords they're going to need to make a service call to have a tech reset them
11:14 AM drdoc: do they have an attempt-limit lockout?
11:14 AM drdoc: ah
11:14 AM roycroft: i don't think so
11:14 AM roycroft: the place i work for is a combination isp/print shop
11:14 AM roycroft: so the printers are pretty important
11:14 AM drdoc: time to explain to the boss in little words what you need
11:14 AM roycroft: i already did
11:15 AM roycroft: "someone changed the passwords for the printers and i cannot log in. please put the passwords in the password manager"
11:15 AM roycroft: i'm not sure what else i can say
11:15 AM roycroft: and i was careful not to blame him
11:15 AM roycroft: he's all about blame
11:15 AM drdoc: "or call me on my office extension and tell them to me"
11:15 AM roycroft: i'm all about solving problems
11:16 AM roycroft: i don't care who did what when or why
11:16 AM roycroft: i just need to get work done
11:16 AM drdoc: yeah, pointing out the source of the issue is never constructive
11:16 AM drdoc: an early mentor called it the BBB Rule
11:16 AM drdoc: Butthurt Bosses Bad
11:17 AM roycroft: in an early ticket system we had about 20 years ago my boss actually added a required custom field named "blame", and we had to place blame on the customer or a staff person for every issue
11:17 AM roycroft: i refused to use that ticket system
11:17 AM roycroft: i mean
11:18 AM roycroft: "i'm getting a new computer and i need the mail server settings"
11:18 AM roycroft: can one "blame" the customer for getting a new computer?
11:18 AM roycroft: can one "blame" staff for setting up a mail system that does not automagically provision new customer computers?
11:18 AM roycroft: there's no fault at all in something like taht
11:18 AM drdoc: that's when I'd start dusting off the CV
11:18 AM roycroft: somebody is changing something
11:19 AM roycroft: and needs some information
11:19 AM drdoc: it reveals a particular mindset
11:19 AM roycroft: yes
11:19 AM roycroft: sadly, i did that for years, but the it market was really tight around here
11:19 AM roycroft: and now i'm in my 60s, so unemployable except as a wall*mart greeter
11:19 AM drdoc: likewise
11:20 AM roycroft: which is why self-employment is my only realistic avenue
11:20 AM roycroft: i'm not dead yet!
11:20 AM drdoc: I don't care. No mortage, no car payment, no major bills
11:20 AM drdoc: if I start running short I'll put on the blue vest for awhile
11:22 AM drdoc: why would you make guide rails out of aluminum?
11:22 AM drdoc: https://www.ebay.com/itm/353402778009
11:22 AM drdoc: that can't be right
11:27 AM roycroft: i still have a car payment, but only a little left on that loan, and i have a savings account that more than covers it
11:27 AM roycroft: in fact, i have enough in savings to cover the medical debut + the car loan
11:28 AM drdoc: excellent
11:28 AM roycroft: but the medical debt is on a 0% apr balance transfer, so it makes sense to pay it off monthly as i'm doing
11:28 AM roycroft: if i lost my job tomorrow the first thing i would do is pay off the debt
11:30 AM drdoc: yeah, makes sense.
11:31 AM drdoc: Hey, are you at all familiar with Delta Tau controllers?
11:31 AM roycroft: i'm not
11:33 AM drdoc: I have a couple of their pc/104 motion control boards, and the docs imply that they're dedicated to a particular hardware system
11:34 AM drdoc: got 'em in an auction lot, so no other info at all
12:02 PM roycroft: drama over
12:02 PM drdoc: :-)
12:02 PM roycroft: and i don't mind sharing this, because the office network is in private address space, behind a good firewall that only i have access to
12:02 PM drdoc: ok
12:02 PM roycroft: "the password is 0000. i don't know why did not try such a simple password before bothering me"
12:03 PM drdoc: <--- no words
12:03 PM roycroft: i have added that to our password manager now
12:03 PM drdoc: literally I have no words
12:03 PM roycroft: and shall not comment on the strength of the password
12:03 PM drdoc: not just that, the comment
12:04 PM sensille: is that a password or a 4-digit pin code?
12:04 PM roycroft: it's a password
12:05 PM roycroft: now in fairness, the same password is used for the web interface as at the printer control panel
12:05 PM sensille: in that case it's unguessable
12:05 PM roycroft: which is a printer control panel
12:05 PM roycroft: so a really complex password is not reasonable to expect, because entering alpha characters is so convoluted
12:05 PM drdoc: sensille: that's just horribly true
12:05 PM roycroft: a pin-like password is apprpriate
12:05 PM roycroft: but it should not be 0000
12:06 PM roycroft: it should be some fairly random string of digits
12:06 PM roycroft: and it can be up to 16 digits long
12:06 PM roycroft: it should be more than 8, at least
12:06 PM roycroft: now he wants me to work on the other printer, with the same password
12:06 PM roycroft: but he still has not given me the ip address of that printer
12:07 PM roycroft: that's an easier problem to solve, because there are only 254-documented addresses - dhcp pool addresses possibilities
12:07 PM roycroft: so about 150
12:07 PM roycroft: i can just try them sequentually until i stumble upon the printer
12:07 PM drdoc: roycroft: sometimes you just have to channel Elvis
12:08 PM drdoc: Elvis Costello that is
12:08 PM roycroft: i actually find this somewhat humorous
12:08 PM drdoc: "I used to be disgusted now I try to be amused"
12:08 PM roycroft: and i hope sharing my office drama entertains others to a degree
12:08 PM drdoc: it do
12:08 PM roycroft: it's all so unnessary and silly
12:08 PM roycroft: unnecessary
12:08 PM drdoc: also makes me very happy to be out of the game
12:09 PM * drdoc installs lcnc in a VM
12:11 PM roycroft: besides the debt paying off in july/august, my woodworking shop should be ready for doing production work by around then
12:11 PM roycroft: and maybe i'll have even made some real progress on the cnc conversion of my mill/drill by then
12:11 PM roycroft: i'm really really wanting to get that done now
12:20 PM drdoc: hah!
12:20 PM drdoc: I'm installing i3 window manager
12:20 PM drdoc: one of the sub-packages is "suckless-tools"
12:21 PM sensille: mutt?
12:21 PM drdoc: ?
12:22 PM sensille: http://www.mutt.org/
12:22 PM sensille: "All mail clients suck. This one just sucks less."
12:23 PM drdoc: ah, no. I'm very familiar with mutt, just not that motto
12:23 PM drdoc: i3 is a very barebones window manager
12:30 PM drdoc: not surprisingly, latency-test jitter in a VM is just silly
12:36 PM roycroft: i still miss mh
12:36 PM roycroft: best mail client ever
03:32 PM Loetmichel: hmm, just got my BMW E46 318i Convertible back from the Mechanic... 5525.62Eur... OUCH!... Now its time to get that 525i Station wagon cleaned out and pressed (road legal test overdue and wouldnt pass witout excessive reparis). *sad puppy* Those 192HP were nice on the german Autobahns... but the convertible is more fun ;)
03:34 PM * JT-Shop got an estimate to fix the oil leaks on the 07 uplander and declined
03:38 PM Loetmichel: JT-Shop: german road legal test fails if there is more than one drop of oil on the Engine. Sometimes even with one drop, depending on the Engineer that does the test.
03:47 PM gregcnc: Illinois, if it has no check engine light it's good, regardless of how poor condition it's in
03:50 PM gregcnc: I finally figured out how the tuners get away with it in IL. OBDII has 8 tests it performs for emissions. one fail is allowed. even if it's the catalyst..
03:59 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, getting a bit close to home from the article you posted this AM
04:11 PM roycroft: and in the parts of oregon that do smog tests, if you fail the test twice and have a receipt showing you spent at least $100 on repairs you get a free pass on the third go even if it still fails
04:12 PM JT-Shop: drugs are all over unfortunately, next road over has some druggies that live in campers
04:13 PM JT-Shop: neighbors daughter almost died from meth but got so ill she got her mom to pick her up and put her in the hospital
04:13 PM JT-Shop: she had congestive heart failure when they admitted her
04:17 PM XXCoder: :(
04:17 PM XXCoder: meth is nasty stuff
04:59 PM veegee: no it's not
04:59 PM veegee: I take it every day
04:59 PM veegee: The key is moderation
04:59 PM veegee: I also use a bunch of other stuff recreationally I probably shouldn't mention
05:00 PM veegee: As long as you don't have a genetic tendency for addiction and you're not an idiot, they're safe. Nothing like how TV/media makes it look like
05:00 PM veegee: And make sure you know the chemistry of it and how to make it properly
05:01 PM veegee: Obviously some fool making drugs in his bathtub is likely going to produce something with a lot of toxins
05:01 PM veegee: But the pure form of the drug alone is quite safe
05:04 PM XXCoder: dead teeth yet?
05:05 PM veegee: nope
05:05 PM veegee: Again, #1 rule: don't be an idiot
05:06 PM veegee: understand what the drug does to you (reduce saliva production, increase focus to the point where people forget to brush teeth)
05:06 PM veegee: And compensate for it
05:06 PM veegee: AKA don't be an idiot
05:07 PM veegee: I make sure to brush and floss 3 times a day and my teeth are better than most other people's
05:07 PM veegee: I also floss in public and at the "dinner table" back when social gatherings were a thing
05:07 PM veegee: I know it's bad manners but I don't give a rat's ass what other people think about me
05:07 PM veegee: My teeth are more important than their opinions
05:08 PM XXCoder: yeah im not anti-drug
05:09 PM XXCoder: just that meth its very easy to have serious and lifelong problems
05:12 PM Loetmichel: veegee: "dont be an idiot" would be nice. doesent work though
05:13 PM veegee: Loetmichel doesn't work for most people, true
05:13 PM Loetmichel: Half of the population is per definition below average IQ.
05:13 PM veegee: And those people should stick to the "law" and go to church on Sundays so a shitty old book can program them their sense of morality
05:13 PM veegee: Yeah for sure, half the population of America voted Trump lol
05:14 PM Loetmichel: also : "recreational drugs" are fine IMHO as long as they stay "recreational". and i would apply that to legal drugs as well as illegal ones
05:14 PM XXCoder: just make selling of dangerous drugs (truly dangerous, not pot) illegal
05:14 PM XXCoder: stop arresting people for buying em
05:15 PM XXCoder: create rehab, and dangerous drug use goes way down
05:15 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: point was: drugs are dangerous when they have a high potential for addiction.
05:15 PM XXCoder: theres more safer drug usage but population is lot more healthy
05:15 PM Loetmichel: or are damaging greatly
05:15 PM Loetmichel: or both
05:15 PM Loetmichel: but right: as long as there is prohibtion there will be people who try to go around it
05:16 PM Loetmichel: so make it so that consuming isnt illegal but selling is for the hard stuff.
05:16 PM XXCoder: as long as there is lights, there will be people who drive though red light. why does those lights exist anyway
05:16 PM Loetmichel: or sell it in controlled enviroments.
05:17 PM veegee: > Half of the population is per definition below average IQ
05:18 PM Loetmichel: XXCoder: true. but like all comparsions it limps. There are no "accidental drug sellers"
05:18 PM veegee: The "by definition" part really sunk in over the last 5 minutes
05:18 PM Loetmichel: veegee: congrats. you are faster than the average ;)
05:18 PM veegee: I forgot just how absolutely retarded most people are
05:19 PM XXCoder: yeah. im tired of people who use "there is people who breaks laws" as rationale that law dont work
05:19 PM veegee: That thought just makes me depressed. I want to believe in humanity and society. But the stupid people and religion and all that are holding us back
05:19 PM veegee: Half of me just wants to sit back and watch the world burn
05:19 PM XXCoder: 85% of people think they are above average
05:19 PM unterhaus_: loetmichel, translation help please, forumslader == dyno hub?
05:20 PM veegee: But the other half really wants to be a positive helpful force.
05:20 PM XXCoder: i think im below average, but i may well be above average. dont really care
05:20 PM gregcnc: been this way since the beginning of time, we did pretty good
05:20 PM veegee: We could have been on Mars by now or something, but all the retards are holding us back
05:20 PM unterhaus_: I have volunteered my services to send all the billionaires to Mars
05:21 PM veegee: Oh guillotine them for sure
05:21 PM veegee: The americans screwed themselves when they didn't vote Bernie. I have no sympathy for them
05:21 PM gregcnc: but they're rich, they must be smart
05:21 PM unterhaus_: sending them to mars is a suitible substitute and we don't have to clean up the mess
05:22 PM veegee: Bernie is sadly the one decent guy trying to do the right thing (for some reason). They don't deserve him
05:22 PM veegee: And that's why half of me just wants to sit back and laugh while I watch them all burn
05:22 PM unterhaus_: Bernie is mostly just hot air
05:23 PM veegee: I don't think so. I think he genuinely wants to do the right thing
05:23 PM veegee: I think he always tried to
05:24 PM XXCoder: yeah bernie always have been helping people
05:24 PM XXCoder: he was jailed twice by protesting
05:26 PM unterhaus_: yeah, he has been highly ineffective as a politician.
05:26 PM XXCoder: you kidding?
05:26 PM XXCoder: he helped pass so many bills
05:26 PM unterhaus_: he got some post offices renamed
05:26 PM veegee: If you mean ineffective because he doesn't take corporate donations and such, sure
05:26 PM unterhaus_: name five of consequence
05:26 PM XXCoder: vee yeah
05:26 PM veegee: Without him, they'd have it a lot worse
05:26 PM unterhaus_: he doesn't work well with others
05:27 PM veegee: Because the "others" are greedy fuckers who need to be publicly executed
05:27 PM XXCoder: you mean kowtow with others?
05:27 PM veegee: Obviously they're not going to like him
05:27 PM veegee: He threatens their wealth and power
05:28 PM veegee: They ALL take corporate donations and they're all bought out
05:33 PM veegee: Ok time to start pouring concentrated sulfuric acid into my old forklift battery
05:33 PM XXCoder: fun
05:33 PM XXCoder: be safe
05:34 PM veegee: I wish I had the electrolyte volumes of the cells so I can calculate exactly how much I need to add
05:35 PM veegee: But only way to do that is to take a cell out, pour out the electrolyte and measure it. I don't have a problem with that other than having to break the intercell connector which is a pain in the ass to weld back together
05:45 PM _unreal_: anyone big on laser etching?
05:49 PM JT-Shop: https://www.amazon.com/Flagship-Lenovo-IdeaPad-Display-Quad-Core/dp/B08HRHP6M2
05:49 PM JT-Shop: thinking about that one for a new business laptop
05:50 PM XXCoder: seems ok
05:58 PM roycroft: my old jointer is finally ready to sell
05:58 PM roycroft: it's all cleaned up and lubed
05:58 PM roycroft: i'm going to take pictures now, and post it tomrrow
05:58 PM roycroft: hopefully it will be gone by early next week
05:59 PM roycroft: my shop is too crowded again
05:59 PM roycroft: i do not have room for extra machines
06:00 PM XXCoder: nice
06:00 PM roycroft: and yes, i'm the weird cl seller who cleans up and tunes up his machines before selling them
06:01 PM roycroft: but i also don't haggle
06:01 PM XXCoder: aka amazing find sellers lol
06:01 PM roycroft: my asking price is what you pay
06:01 PM roycroft: i actually like knowing that when i sell a machine the buyer will be able to go back to their shop and start using it right away, and will be happy with it
06:06 PM JT-Shop: yep same here
06:06 PM XXCoder: roy yeah though if I cant fix, I'll explictly state so
06:07 PM roycroft: when i sold my edge sander it was to a guy who runs a trailer fabrication shop
06:07 PM roycroft: he was impressed that it was about 15 years old and still looked almost mint
06:08 PM roycroft: and he could tell i really liked the machine
06:08 PM roycroft: when he was pulling out he promised me it would be used lightly and taken very good car of
06:08 PM roycroft: care
06:08 PM roycroft: i really did like that machine a lot, and if i had the space i'd have kept it
06:09 PM roycroft: the money i got for it was nice, but i did not need the money
06:09 PM roycroft: i needed real estte
06:09 PM roycroft: estate
06:10 PM JT-Shop: I sold a Honda 200 dirt bike years ago and the buyer said to me I saw in the background all the labeled boxes and knew the bike was well taken care of
06:13 PM roycroft: the jointer could use a paint job, but there's just not enough added value to be worth the time it would take me to repaint it
06:13 PM roycroft: i'd basically spend a day painting it and be able to ask maybe $50 more for it
06:20 PM roycroft: https://roycroft.us/Jointer
06:20 PM roycroft: i think that looks reasonably clean
06:22 PM roycroft: the beds are flat and smooth and parallel to each other
06:22 PM roycroft: not much else matters :)
06:22 PM roycroft: oh
06:22 PM roycroft: the fence is straight
06:22 PM roycroft: that does matter
06:22 PM roycroft: and the cutter head goes round and round really fast, but does not vibrate
06:24 PM roycroft: i need to print and bind a copy of the owner's manual as well, because most buyers don't have the ability to do that, and they appreciate having a printed manual
06:24 PM Tom_L: JT-Shop, probably better suited for your needs than the one my kid got
06:33 PM CaptHindsight: real estate prices are up >200% in Canada (unrelated comment triggered by keyword "real estate")
06:35 PM roycroft: yes, they are
06:36 PM roycroft: i've been hearing about it on the cbc almost incessantly
06:36 PM roycroft: it seems to be the #3 news story, behind covid-19 and the military scandals
06:40 PM Tom_L: you'd think they could find something better to talk about than covid. it's been over a year
06:41 PM Tom_L: seems ppl have a handle on it for the most part
06:41 PM XXCoder: wa state is reverting to phase 2 again
06:41 PM XXCoder: 400+ new cases
06:41 PM Tom_L: they're behaving stupidly
06:42 PM XXCoder: yep
06:48 PM roycroft: it's still the most pressing issue in the world
06:49 PM roycroft: i encountered an unmasked person in a store yet again today
06:49 PM roycroft: i also did in a different store yesterday
06:49 PM XXCoder: it doesnt help that people thinks that decreasing cases means perfect safety
06:51 PM roycroft: you are mistaken
06:51 PM roycroft: the problem is that people don't think
06:54 PM XXCoder: true
06:57 PM Tom_L: but you got the shot!! you can do whatever you want now!
06:58 PM CaptHindsight: can't people (politicians) find a way to corrupt rebuilding our infrastructure?
06:59 PM CaptHindsight: why can't we have jobs and corruption vs just corruption?
07:02 PM roycroft: that's actually great, tom_l, for me
07:03 PM roycroft: because when i called the lady out for not masking in the supermarket yesterday she said "if you're so scared then stay home"
07:04 PM roycroft: and i was able to honestly respond "i've been vaccinated - this is not about me - it's about the front line workers who deal with people like you every day who could infect them and get them sick or kill them"
07:04 PM roycroft: i did not anticipate that benefit from being vaccinated
07:04 PM XXCoder: nice :)
07:04 PM roycroft: and yes, i am aware that it takes a couple weeks before my immune system is ready to do proper battle
07:04 PM roycroft: so i am still at risk for a while
07:05 PM roycroft: but it's never been about me
07:05 PM roycroft: it's about everybody
07:05 PM roycroft: it's about how sick i am of all the restrictions
07:05 PM roycroft: like everyone else
07:05 PM roycroft: if people would have behaved correctly this would have been over with a long time ago
07:06 PM roycroft: look at places like new zealand or south korea
07:06 PM roycroft: and then look at what all this "american freedom" has brought us
07:08 PM XXCoder: freedom is best supported by very good education system that teaches people critical thinking skills
07:08 PM XXCoder: when education sucks, freedom will become sucky
07:10 PM roycroft: our education system is failing
07:10 PM CaptHindsight: "thinking about others is for the suckers and the weak"
07:11 PM CaptHindsight: what do you do with that half of the population that thinks this way?
07:11 PM roycroft: yeah, utilitarianism has never been a popular philosophical theory in this country
07:12 PM roycroft: and i admit to having read too much jeremy bentham and john stuart mill when i was young
07:13 PM roycroft: my ethos has been what's good for everyone is good for each individual for as long as i can remember
07:14 PM roycroft: or to put it in classic geek speak
07:14 PM roycroft: the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one
07:24 PM roycroft: i accidently pushed the "publish" button when finishing editing my cl post, instead of saving it as a draft
07:24 PM roycroft: oh well
07:24 PM roycroft: i guess i'll post early
07:26 PM _unreal_: about time lol
07:26 PM _unreal_: just got my loveme case for my phone
07:26 PM roycroft: i meant to post at noon tomorrow
07:26 PM _unreal_: GOD.... I feel better now
07:26 PM _unreal_: been walking around with an S21 ULTRA
07:27 PM XXCoder: lol wel
07:27 PM _unreal_: now it has a lovely yellow LoveMei case that is 2 part aluminum with very thick rubber
07:27 PM _unreal_: worth the money
07:29 PM * roycroft hates telephony generally, and mobile telephony intensely
07:30 PM _unreal_: same here aside from the aid it gives me when I'm killing it in the stocks
07:31 PM _unreal_: wholy crap. just looked up the cameras finally
07:31 PM _unreal_: on this phone
07:31 PM _unreal_: the main wide angle is 108MP
08:26 PM * Bleepshop returns from town amazed.
08:29 PM Bleepshop: I ordered a $42 STM32 GRBL board with a MPG for the plasma cutter a while back expecting a cheap POS MPG since the boards were running $32-$35 without it.
08:30 PM Bleepshop: The MPG alone is worth what I paid ofr the whole set. Hefty ABS case, 100ppr wheel with alloy knob. Cable you could whip a horse and strangle an elephant with.
08:31 PM Bleepshop: Almost at the same time due to the length of it. LOL
08:31 PM XXCoder: why would you want to do those 2 things? but impressibve
08:32 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Uh... It might be a wild Saturday night ? ;D
08:32 PM XXCoder: lol
08:34 PM Bleepshop: This looks like the same kit at twice the price. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081VK3SQB
08:35 PM Bleepshop: The MPG is smaller thean I expeted but that makes it fit in my hand comfortably.
08:38 PM Bleepshop: It was funny because I get the notification this morning that it was delivered Tuesday and I'm expecting it to be an Amazon prank because of 04/01 since it wasn't supposed to be here till sometime between the 5th and the 26th.
09:01 PM drdoc: are there newer cheat sheets on the wiki for latency tuning?
09:02 PM Tom_L: not that i know of
09:02 PM Tom_L: turn off hyperthreading
09:02 PM drdoc: yes
09:02 PM Tom_L: few other bios adjustments
09:02 PM CaptHindsight: just kill power management and virutalization in BIOS
09:03 PM drdoc: vT too?
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: yes and anything that makes the clocks change speed
09:03 PM drdoc: is using USB and onboard gfx still a no-no?
09:03 PM drdoc: yeah, speed step is off alkready
09:03 PM CaptHindsight: those are fine for the past 10+ years
09:04 PM drdoc: that's about how old the docs are
09:04 PM drdoc: :-)
09:04 PM CaptHindsight: RTAI doesn't need isolcpus settings
09:05 PM CaptHindsight: premmpt_rt might benefit from it
09:05 PM drdoc: I'm probably running either an ivy bridge or a haswell i5
09:06 PM drdoc: what I'm reading suggests that preempt_rt is a better fit
09:06 PM CaptHindsight: whatever works
09:06 PM drdoc: ok
09:06 PM Tom_L: maybe for newer hardware
09:07 PM drdoc: does isolcpus turn off the named cores, or just reserve them for the hal drivers?
09:09 PM drdoc: ah, ok
09:09 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/9-installing-linuxcnc/40988-isolcpus-setting-in-buster
09:09 PM drdoc: the linux docs are a little more clear
09:09 PM drdoc: a system affinity call *can* move a process onto an isolated core
09:10 PM drdoc: I presume that's what lcnc does
09:12 PM drdoc: one more question
09:12 PM Tom_L: put another quarter in the cup
09:13 PM drdoc: I'm moving from parallel port to a 7i96
09:13 PM Tom_L: you must use preempt-rt
09:13 PM drdoc: that was the question
09:13 PM Tom_L: on any ethernet mesa card
09:15 PM drdoc: so it sounds like the x86 buster ISO is what I need
09:18 PM Tom_L: http://buildbot.linuxcnc.org/dists/buster/
09:19 PM drdoc: uspace, right?
09:23 PM Tom_L: yes
09:24 PM Tom_L: unless you want the dev
09:33 PM drdoc: noooo
09:51 PM drdoc: aw man
09:51 PM drdoc: my overlords are gonna have *me* for dinner if I don't feed them soon
09:51 PM CaptHindsight: did that guy with the gantry and two motors and home switches ever get his HAL sorted out?
09:51 PM drdoc: thanks, gents!
09:52 PM drdoc: I don't know; I had to crash
09:53 PM drdoc: I wanted to tell him - using your finger to test comfig instead of the gantry is a lot faster and sometimes a lot cheaper
09:54 PM Tom_L: CaptHindsight, i'm not sure
09:55 PM drdoc: Win-something was helping him
09:58 PM Tom_L: i thought there was an example of it in 2.8 but dunno where it would be
10:00 PM CaptHindsight: examples posted on the forums as well
10:03 PM Tom_L: https://forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuration/33079-how-to-2-or-more-motors-on-one-axis-gantry-linuxcnc-2-8-master?start=20
10:06 PM Tom_L: i'm just glad i don't have a gantry :)
10:08 PM Tom_L: i know gloops set one up
10:17 PM Tom_L: i wonder how difficult it will be to modify my single point thread macro for NPT
10:17 PM Tom_L: i can see a whole rewrite ahead
10:18 PM Tom_L: taper rate is 3/4" per foot
10:19 PM roycroft: just tilt the mill head :)
10:19 PM Tom_L: that's cheating
10:20 PM Tom_L: and wouldn't work on single point anyway
10:21 PM Tom_L: so i generate 1 helix at full size then each one after that gets smaller
10:21 PM roycroft: for a taper thread you would have to make a new tool
10:21 PM Tom_L: i'm not sure about that
10:21 PM Tom_L: the pitch determines what cutter i can use i think ( not entirely sure )
10:22 PM roycroft: what about the thread angle?
10:22 PM roycroft: it should follow the taper, not the axis
10:22 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/cnc/thread_mills/Thread_mill2.jpg
10:23 PM Tom_L: yeah i need to think about it some more
10:23 PM Tom_L: i've got straight threads pretty well figured out
10:24 PM Tom_L: i got a 3/4 pipe to hose fitting today that got me started thinking about it again
10:26 PM Tom_L: https://www.amazon.com/FASPARTS-Garden-Adapter-Fitting-Irrigation/dp/B013XV23MK
10:27 PM Tom_L: looking at both profiles it makes me wonder if those cutters could work
10:38 PM -!- #linuxcnc mode set to +v by ChanServ
10:38 PM Tom_L: https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/npt-national-pipe-taper-threads-d_750.html
