02:22 AM Deejay: moin
02:58 AM XXCoder: JT-Cave: someone had idea, bolt all herringbone hears together, from outside in, to each other
02:58 AM XXCoder: can then weld and blend out
02:58 AM XXCoder: still not just one peice but a trick but yeah
03:58 AM miss0r: XXCoder: Whats the point of that?
03:59 AM XXCoder: nothing really, its interesting fidget toy
03:59 AM miss0r: oh :) Alright then
04:00 AM * miss0r is looking at the servo drives for a 4&5th axis
04:00 AM miss0r: I was offered one for free. I just need to figure out if I can somehow drive it with my CNC
04:00 AM XXCoder: servo nice
04:01 AM miss0r: it has two Sanyo Denki PY2 servo drives
04:01 AM miss0r: Looking at the manual, it looks doable. I just need a tranformer to make my 3phase 400 volt into three phase 200 volt
04:05 AM miss0r: meh. It does not look all that easy after all :] I think I might need to install some other servos in there. perhaps clearpath servos is the way to go
04:18 AM Tom_L: morning
04:18 AM XXCoder: hey tom
04:18 AM XXCoder: your ti gears is cool
05:09 AM JT-Cave: morning
05:09 AM XXCoder: yo
08:44 AM veegee: Is a 3 axle trailer harder on the vehicle to to tow than a 2 axle trailer?
08:44 AM veegee: Assume the weight of the trailer itself is the same
08:44 AM veegee: Just by having another axle, do the turning stresses make it significantly more difficult?
09:42 AM Loetmichel: Hm. Note to self: don'n use el cheapo shopvacs as a vacuum source for the CNC machines vacuum tables. Next set of two is on the way out. Brushes depleted. Hope they hold up until the new side channel pump is installed, so i dont have to spend $100 on another pair... :(
10:17 AM gregcnc: veegee what are you pulling it with that you worry about..... turning?
11:01 AM veegee: gregcnc LOL good point, but the answer is a 13,000lb forklift
11:02 AM veegee: Loetmichel people use shop vacs for that!?
11:03 AM veegee: Loetmichel I use a dedicated vacuum pump
11:03 AM veegee: a positive displacement piston pump
11:08 AM skunkworks: ok.. Now this computer is on a ups. Should stay up forever!!!
11:14 AM Loetmichel: veegee: as a stopgap. big three phase Side channel vaccum pump is already here, just needs a mount and a bit of tubing...
01:56 PM NoGodDamnIdea: hey guys
01:57 PM unterhaus_: parts of the internet aren't working
02:45 PM JT-Shop: if I spend $9 more I save #10 in shipping at AD lol
03:05 PM roycroft: yeah, of course this would happen
03:05 PM roycroft: i need to make a quick drawing in autocad
03:06 PM roycroft: so when i resumed the suspended virtual machine, which had auto-suspended yesterday, after it started up it was at the beginning of a windows update
03:07 PM roycroft: so now i get to wait an indeterminate amount of time, which will likely be just longer than my deadline, for the updates to complete
03:08 PM roycroft: because doing the registry adjustment to tell windows to never auto-update only works for so long until it reverts to insisting on updating whenever it wants
03:09 PM roycroft: in fairness, mac os catalina is starting to go down that path as well
03:09 PM roycroft: so it's not just microsoft
03:09 PM CaptHindsight: I have not connected my Win pc to the internet in 4+ years
03:11 PM CaptHindsight: now that GPU pass through works pretty well I'll likely just use VM's for Win on Linux
03:12 PM CaptHindsight: it is still a cat and mouse game with winders and what services to kill to keep some update from happening without being asked if you want it
03:13 PM roycroft: oh, it's finished
03:13 PM roycroft: and i'm not out of time yet
03:13 PM roycroft: i just have to draw fast now
03:46 PM roycroft: i don't even mind that windows wants to update upon occasion
03:46 PM roycroft: i just need to be able to apply updates on my schedule, not theirs
03:46 PM roycroft: i got my drawing done just in time to order materials for later today, so i got lucky
03:47 PM roycroft: no thanks to the imposition of redmond time upon my schedule
03:51 PM FinboySlick: Silly people thinking they own their computer. So 1998.
03:51 PM XXCoder: heys
03:55 PM roycroft: i own my computer and i own my time
03:55 PM roycroft: and nobody will take those things away from me
03:59 PM XXCoder: roy yeah i remember that comic where guy says "allight i got couple hours for game!" and pc displays "3 hours updating"
04:01 PM miss0r: My big kid just 'completed' daycare today. Starting in preschool a week from now. (this is one proud dad!)
04:01 PM miss0r: hmm. I think I have the terms mixed up here.. preschool? He is starting in school a week from now, but entry level school.. I don't know the term :D
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: pre-school in for age 4 and under in the US
04:03 PM miss0r: In that case it is not pre-school.
04:03 PM miss0r: What do you call it when they start school?
04:03 PM CaptHindsight: age 5 is kindergarten
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: age 6 is 1st grade here
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: the cut off dates have changed over the years
04:04 PM miss0r: well, I guess its called 1st grade then
04:04 PM miss0r: he just completed kindergarden.
04:04 PM CaptHindsight: it might currently be the age by Sept when classes begin
04:05 PM CaptHindsight: \0/
04:05 PM miss0r: actualy I think he is starting in 0. grade. its a combination of kindergarden and school
04:05 PM miss0r: here it is determined by the year in which you turn 6
04:06 PM miss0r: I must admit I was getting a bit choked up when he hugged the personal and said goodbuy for good. Even writing it now :]
04:07 PM miss0r: anyway - back to scrapping perfectly good aluminium in the reach for success.
04:10 PM CaptHindsight: one year down and 12 + 4 + 2-8 more based on PhD or post docs years :)
04:14 PM roycroft: you're not scrapping it
04:14 PM roycroft: you're prepping it for recycling
04:16 PM roycroft: capthindsight: my sister's birthday is 2 december
04:16 PM roycroft: where i lived in illinois at the time that was the cutoff date for starting school
04:16 PM roycroft: she was literally the youngest person in her class, being only 4 years old for the first three months of kindergarten
04:17 PM roycroft: my parents had considered holding her back for a year because of that, which the school district permitted
04:18 PM CaptHindsight: roycroft: yeah back in those days, they bumped it up to sept a couple decades ago or so
04:19 PM roycroft: probably not a bad thing
04:19 PM roycroft: and certainly a sign of the times
04:19 PM roycroft: this is the age of overprotective parenting
04:20 PM CaptHindsight: we would have been better off by assigning grade level to fighting ability
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: much was decided in the "cloakrooms"
04:22 PM CaptHindsight: I'm surprised that nobody was ever impaled on the hooks
04:23 PM CaptHindsight: seems to be automatic in horror films that take place in a school
04:33 PM _unreal_: internut-, I'm sorry for you loss (using a mac) LOL
04:33 PM _unreal_: and trying to get windows software to work on it lol
04:34 PM _unreal_: internut-, but hay good job on finally getting it to work in vm or what ever ya did.
04:55 PM roycroft: the price of steel has come down
04:56 PM roycroft: i don't think we've detariffed yet
04:57 PM roycroft: but the stuff i bought today i estimated (based on past price history) at about $60, and it came in at $37.50
04:57 PM roycroft: i am not complaining
04:57 PM roycroft: i'm pretty happy, actually
05:00 PM XXCoder: nice!
05:01 PM XXCoder: this is also nice, tomoto planter https://youtu.be/w1Re4GtKzlk
05:01 PM XXCoder: he had waste space near heater, so he turns it into tomoto plant starter grow area.
05:01 PM XXCoder: free heat
05:01 PM XXCoder: using grow lights
05:01 PM XXCoder: yes cnc in involved
06:34 PM JT-Cave: the price of lumber is double
06:34 PM JT-Cave: PT 2x4x8 $10.50
06:34 PM XXCoder: yeah i read about wood prices. ouch!
06:34 PM XXCoder: that guy saw $50 plywood sheet prices. painful
06:34 PM XXCoder: so he used scrap wood
06:49 PM _unreal_: lol I bet my teak saw dust should be worth something then
07:27 PM snakedGT is now known as snaked
08:09 PM _unreal_: now thats a life savings if I ever saw it
08:09 PM _unreal_: https://i.imgur.com/UB1NvOG.jpg
08:12 PM chupacabra: My latency test says 20755 Is that ok?
08:13 PM XXCoder: 20k? with what running whenyou ran test?
08:14 PM chupacabra: nothing but X
08:14 PM XXCoder: oh you should test latency with livestream of fireplace running, and 5 glxgears
08:14 PM chupacabra: my last machine had 2 more numbers in it.
08:14 PM chupacabra: Dern dell
08:15 PM XXCoder: theres lot of settings you can use to try cut latency
08:15 PM chupacabra: will that lower the number?
08:15 PM XXCoder: like tturning off all power management in bios
08:15 PM XXCoder: usually.
08:16 PM chupacabra: ok, I heard dumping onboard video to.
08:16 PM XXCoder: yeah thats outdated infoi
08:16 PM Tom_L: hyperthreading etc
08:16 PM XXCoder: i thought so till recently but it dont matter now
08:17 PM chupacabra: brand new install dunnoo what desktop it is. straight up linuxcnc
08:18 PM _unreal_: just be aware if you turn off the PC the latency will go WAY up
08:18 PM XXCoder: Tom_L: turn hyperthreading on or off?
08:18 PM chupacabra: I never turn them off.
08:19 PM Tom_L: off
08:20 PM Tom_L: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?RealTime
08:20 PM Tom_L: How to improve realtime performance
08:22 PM chupacabra: Ya, I'm gonna read a while. This machine is better than the last. my paralell card comes in tomorrow.
08:24 PM chupacabra: Had it working perfect on a dell for years but It died.
08:25 PM XXCoder: nice. we really need gthx here
08:26 PM XXCoder: its open source irc bot, factoid type]
08:26 PM Tom_L: it still has to be populated with facts
08:26 PM XXCoder: sure but we can add stuff as it goes
08:26 PM XXCoder: reprap have thousands because of that. only some joke ones
08:28 PM XXCoder: https://github.com/gunnbr/gthx source code
08:30 PM chupacabra: I like smart bots. It is the future
08:31 PM chupacabra: I ran one for 20 years and it still lives on that channel.
08:33 PM chupacabra: I know y'all don't know me but I'm OG
08:34 PM chupacabra: Richard Stallman stole my girlfiend!
08:43 PM roycroft: i used to work with someone who dated rms
08:46 PM roycroft: she was extremely geeky and extremely hygienically challenged
08:46 PM roycroft: they were probably a perfect match
08:47 PM chupacabra: I know her.
08:47 PM chupacabra: She used to live here but I heard she went to SF
08:48 PM chupacabra: roycroft, you know Richie and them?
08:49 PM roycroft: i have never met rms, thank goodness
08:49 PM chupacabra: and not the Unix guys?
08:49 PM roycroft: oh, ritchie, you mean
08:49 PM roycroft: i have met him
08:50 PM roycroft: a number of times
08:50 PM chupacabra: good people
08:50 PM roycroft: and most of the csrg folks
08:51 PM chupacabra: I was into plan 9 after unix.
08:52 PM roycroft: i have played with plan 9
08:52 PM roycroft: it's a nice os
08:52 PM roycroft: but hardware support for it is not that great
08:52 PM chupacabra: wasn't it. just needed developers
08:53 PM chupacabra: niether was linux. I was hacking devices at first till 2002
08:53 PM roycroft: plan 9 is a research os
08:54 PM roycroft: it was never intended to be widely deployed
08:54 PM chupacabra: had great concepts most are using now.
08:54 PM roycroft: it was a logical extension of unix
08:55 PM chupacabra: exactly.
08:55 PM roycroft: the unix mantra is "everything is a file"
08:55 PM roycroft: the plan 9 mantra is "and the file can live anywhere"
08:55 PM chupacabra: Cloud
10:58 PM rue_mohr: as apple tries to remove the existence of files all together "There are no files"
11:35 PM XXCoder: i love the cleaning equipment shown at that time https://youtu.be/UXaK1JW8Pe8?t=591
11:36 PM XXCoder: its easily can be made automatic nowdays, but hella charm
11:36 PM XXCoder: guy normally works on watches but this video is on veitum war era lighter
