12:09 AM XXCoder: power chamfering. interesting https://youtu.be/q4kaXRgUHGs
12:20 AM _unreal_: so the laser etcher project is now nearing its end
12:21 AM _unreal_: I have limits functional missing a few the @#%@#$@ cheap shit I got my amazon ended up being a rip off scam
12:21 AM _unreal_: purchased some new one's that ARE glass core NOT "GLASS CORE" plastic outside envelope. which ended up being PURE plastic and couldnt take ANY heat at all. even kids craft hot glue was to much heat on those fuckers and they stop working
12:22 AM _unreal_: when I get the replacements on monday I'll get them all soldered and installed then tune the magnets
12:23 AM _unreal_: need to fix the probe switch
12:23 AM _unreal_: and wiring
12:23 AM _unreal_: and wishing I could fix the @#$@#$ stepper motor for the z
12:23 AM _unreal_: waiting to get my grubby paws on an other sat. that has the same motor setup in it
01:12 AM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: I think I may have it which is funny as hell because onboard ethernet doesn't work, the 'SmartLAN' submenu to control it is totally empty, devoid of options or information and I had to hang a new CMOS battery in it to get it to be stable. Jitter is down to 15000 though. LOL
01:13 AM XXCoder: 15k is quite good
01:13 AM XXCoder: is that with few glxgears and large window HD video livestream of fireplace?
01:14 AM XXCoder: live because it keeps network busy AND large video and few glxgears keeps gpu and cpu busy
01:20 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: <25000 with a few glxgears scattered about and a file manager open. This will be a dedicated machine. Sound is off, extra audio codecs are off, I offed half the bios and then had to hunt up a PS/2 keyboard because I accidently made it stop responding to the USB one. xD
01:20 AM XXCoder: you need to try video too
01:21 AM XXCoder: because more busy pc is, more accurate your latency measurement is
01:21 AM XXCoder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOnIAoqQkd4
01:21 AM XXCoder: this will run forever.
01:25 AM Bleepshop: It's hitting 20K with 6 glxgears&, 3 of them partially occuded by a terminal window and then opening and closing Thunar repeatedly. I threw a 120GB SSD in this puppy because I was sick of waiting for spinning rust. LOL
01:26 AM XXCoder: lol
01:27 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: I'm at the limits of a wifi signal. I have to buffer every bit of video I watch out here in the shop. All hail the geeks for creating youtube-dl.
01:27 AM XXCoder: ohh drat
01:28 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Of course I could download the file to the jukebox and install Kodi on the CNC, but that would just be silly. LOL
01:28 AM XXCoder: it would still hit cpu and gpu a bit
01:29 AM XXCoder: but not networking heh
01:32 AM Bleepshop: I grabbed an old first generation Rockola internet downloading jukebox chassis for $20 a while back because the licensing fees to reactivate it were more than a new unit. Stripped it except for the touchscreen and Peavey speakers. SFF box with USB drives and a big amplifier.
01:35 AM Bleepshop: Still need to make an AC power control unit for the amp so it's controlled by the PC but even without it it's loud enough the neighbors get to hear Pink Floyd.
01:42 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: OK. Fired up youtube and watched the jitter spike to >150K, waited till it loaded and reset the stats. With the latency test on top of the fullscreened 1080p video on a 1280x1024 display it's stable at 150K
01:43 AM XXCoder: wow definitely dont play video while running cnc
01:43 AM Bleepshop: Yeah, 150K for the servo thread and 350K for the base thread.
01:44 AM Bleepshop: Like I said the only thing this is going to do unless I'm loading a pattern from the network or updating it is run the Accu-Cut,
01:45 AM XXCoder: it uses onboard video?
01:45 AM XXCoder: or is it seperate gpu card?
01:46 AM XXCoder: (onboard meaning on motherboard)
01:46 AM XXCoder: (*part of motherboard not card that connects to it)
01:46 AM Bleepshop: I've got RPi 3s for video players and an old rack mount PC running as a minidnla server so all the entertainment is taken care of for a lot less watts.
01:47 AM XXCoder: yeah though if your linuxcnc have very bad latency with video it might start something and cause cnc to mess up
01:47 AM XXCoder: thats why im asking of controller pc has onboard or card gpu
01:49 AM Bleepshop: It's an ATI PCI-E and I'm trying to figure out how in the hell to do an 'lspci' on a Debian system. LOL
01:55 AM rue_mohr: just do the lspci?
01:58 AM Bleepshop: It is a newer card, black shield, red fan, HDMI, DP, DVI and I can't find lspci or the pciutils package in synaptic.
02:03 AM * Bleepshop reboots it, pushes [Pause] when the bios enumerates the cards, says "Screw this I'll never remember that." and whips out the cellphone.
02:04 AM XXCoder: lol well all you have to now since it should be card and not onboard, is to go into bios and ensure that ONBOARD video is disabled
02:05 AM XXCoder: it is likely already set that way
02:08 AM Bleepshop: What onboard video ? LOL
02:08 AM XXCoder: most modern-ish motherboards has onboard
02:08 AM XXCoder: mine does. its disabled on mine heh
02:09 AM Bleepshop: Aha! Radeon 6670/7670
02:09 AM XXCoder: thats fine, reasonable enough. dont need to be super high end or anything, just not onboard
02:12 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: This thing is from 2008. It's got serial, parallel, 5.1 audio, optical, spdif, PS/2 kb/mouse ports, USB 2.0, the typical messy transitional technology board. LOL
02:13 AM XXCoder: hmm 2008... mix of onboard video and no onboard video era
02:13 AM XXCoder: interesting era board you got there!
02:16 AM Bleepshop: Much to my surprize I did not find a place to plug in the kitchen sink. LOL
02:18 AM Bleepshop: This puppy. https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-P35C-DS3R-rev-1x/support#support-manual
02:20 AM XXCoder: wow no video port
02:21 AM Bleepshop: I also went through and turned off all the desktop effects/shadows/etc I could find.
02:24 AM XXCoder: thats great idea yeah
02:25 AM Bleepshop: I'm used to squeezing the maximum amount of speed out of obsolete laptops so I figured the same priciples would apply.
02:27 AM Bleepshop: OK. Plugged in the PCI parport card and it's holding steady just a hair under 30K.
02:32 AM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Running the latency test from StepConf with nothing else open gives me 9K on the servo thread and 93K on the base.
02:33 AM XXCoder: hmm not too bad but not too great either. you'll be fine with somewhat slower movement speed
02:35 AM CaptHindsight: integrated video hasn't been an issue with AMD for over the past 10 years
02:35 AM CaptHindsight: the wiki info is ancient
02:37 AM XXCoder: ahh thought that added a lot of latency due to cpu polling
02:37 AM CaptHindsight: I count on integrated video working well
02:37 AM XXCoder: it was moot anyway his doesnt even have ingerated video anyway
02:37 AM XXCoder: ill remove it from my list of optimizations then
02:37 AM CaptHindsight: just FYI that info about integrated video was for pre 2005 hardware
02:38 AM CaptHindsight: way back when there were latency issues and by plugging in a PCI GPU card it would lower the scores
02:39 AM XXCoder: ok
02:41 AM CaptHindsight: I'd actually have to go back and test some old hardware with the new RTAI stuff and see
02:52 AM CaptHindsight: i have 2.8.1 running on a 785 MB from 2009 with integrated video working just fine, latency is ~20us
02:53 AM Deejay: moin
02:53 AM XXCoder: not bad so yeah i guess wiki needs updating
02:53 AM CaptHindsight: 12 years has gone by quick https://www.gigabyte.com/us/Motherboard/GA-MA785GMT-UD2H-rev-10#ov
03:56 AM veegee_ is now known as veegee
05:09 AM JT-Cave: morning
06:10 AM Tom_L: morning
07:07 AM JT-Cave: going to be a nice day here... a bit cool at the moment
07:42 AM JT-Cave: https://gnipsel.com/images/garden/germination/sprout-station-07.jpg
07:42 AM JT-Cave: 16 days from planting the seeds
09:48 AM Tom_L: looks like 67F here for the high
09:49 AM Tom_L: JT-Cave, tomatoes?
09:49 AM Tom_L: i never grew them from seed
09:59 AM JT-Cave: yeah
11:23 AM roycroft: i've grown tomatoes from seed before, but it's been a long long time
11:23 AM roycroft: it's easier just to buy starts
11:24 AM roycroft: it's hard to get starts for some heirloom varieties though
11:32 AM JT-Shop: I get heirloom seeds from Baker Seeds here in Missouri
11:36 AM unterhaus_: we raised almost all of our tomatoes from seeds last year
11:36 AM unterhaus_: although, tbh, they were all beefsteak, which is a bit monotonous.
11:37 AM unterhaus_: going to diversify this year. I'm getting ready to go out and built 4 raised gardens to add to the existing one
11:40 AM JT-Shop: https://gnipsel.com/images/garden/raised-beds/
11:41 AM gloops: heirloom varieties i grow - harbinger and brandywine, might be different names in the US though, if they are available there
11:41 AM JT-Shop: that's my raised beds, going to put the indeterminate Cherokee Purple tomatoes next to the cattle panel so they can grow 10' tall
11:42 AM gloops: brandywine is one of few varieties where the flowers can fuse - you get mega toms
11:42 AM gregcnc: is the carport in front of the garage a standard thing in MO?
11:47 AM JT-Shop: you find the carports everywhere, I had to get to protect the MIL's car, now it's my van and stuff in there
11:47 AM JT-Shop: they build them in an hour or less
11:47 AM gregcnc: don't see it around here
11:48 AM JT-Shop: it"
11:48 AM JT-Shop: ?
11:48 AM gregcnc: carports. i follow a guy on insta and he's got the same setup, probably not to far from you
11:51 AM unterhaus_: I imagine there are more carports in places where it gets really warm
11:52 AM unterhaus_: JT, some shots the tomato plants have blankets, is that because of freezing?
11:54 AM JT-Shop: yep, had cover them up and put 100 watt light bulbs in the tents
11:54 AM JT-Shop: they were huge because I kept them alive all winter
11:55 AM Tom_L: do you get better yield the 2nd year?
11:59 AM JT-Shop: no, indeterminate varieties just keep growing and growing and growing, I cut the stem off about a 1' down and restarted the plant a few times during that winter
12:16 PM unterhaus_: JT, do you replace the dirt every year?
12:24 PM * Bleepshop does the Happy Dance.
12:27 PM Bleepshop: The Sound Logic PC-2-Rout M2 appears to be fully functional. I've got blinky lights in what looks like all the right places in response to move, spindle and coolant commands. :D
12:30 PM Bleepshop: And as a bonus the status readout window in the old fire alarm panel is just the right size to mount it behind with the rest of the components arrayed around it.
01:16 PM XXCoder: hey all
01:26 PM Bleepshop: XXCoder: Yo, I'm about to start making the mounting panel for all the stepper drivers and power supplies. The PC-2-Rout M2 checked out fine and fits perfectly in the window in the new box.
01:27 PM XXCoder: nice
01:27 PM Bleepshop: And this computer hasn't popped a cap on the motherboard like the 6 doorstops sitting here or died from me dropping my lighter on the bench next to it like the last one. LOL
01:29 PM XXCoder: lol
01:32 PM Bleepshop: Yeah, That pissed me off for an hour. Had the Asus board running, servo thread jitter was stable at <20K, started testing teh breakout board, decided "This is gonna be the one.", tossed my lighter on the bench next to it to start powering down and unplugging it and it just died when the lighter bounced 6" from it. Never powered up again. LOL
01:33 PM Bleepshop: Spent yesterday in town scrounging for old PCs and came up with this Gigabyte board.
01:37 PM XXCoder: lol ouch
01:43 PM Bleepshop: This thing seems stable enough, I disabled the onboard serial/parallel ports and plugged in the SIIG card to give it an extra layer of buffering just in case the M2 board was the issue.
01:48 PM Bleepshop: Got to go digging in the storage in a few and find my pieces of KomAlu to make the component mounting panel. the GX-16 connectors I ordered to redo the harness with and get rid of the old crusty Jones plugs should be here tomorrow so I'm gonna be busy. :D
01:51 PM skunkworks: http://electronicsam.com/images/greenmachine/IMG_20210321_133551.jpg
01:52 PM * Bleepshop tells skunkworks "Look over there!" and snakes a nice rotary table.
01:52 PM Bleepshop: skunkworks: Nice! ;D
01:52 PM CaptHindsight: Bleepshop: onboard LPT ports tend to work well for software stepping
01:54 PM skunkworks: I have been using software stepping for the rotary testing
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks: where are you seeing wear?
01:54 PM CaptHindsight: on the drive
01:54 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: Yeah, It's just after generating a stack of boat anchors I was kind of paranoid that the M2 board had a broken isolation issue and was killing the PCs.
01:54 PM skunkworks: on the plastic? I don't think I have run it long enough to reallys see.
01:55 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks: have you tried annealing the printed gear after printing? Oven baking
01:55 PM skunkworks: no - not yet
01:56 PM CaptHindsight: I've been following the discussion a bit on the ml
01:56 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: I'll probably turn the motherboard port back on and wire my jog wheel to the SIIG for the final setup.
01:56 PM NoGodDamnIdea: hey guys
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: skunkworks: https://res.mdpi.com/d_attachment/jmmp/jmmp-04-00038/article_deploy/jmmp-04-00038.pdf
01:58 PM CaptHindsight: https://rigid.ink/blogs/news/how-to-anneal-your-3d-prints-for-strength
01:59 PM XXCoder: skunkworks: making nice progress!
02:00 PM CaptHindsight: the downside of annealing: Annealing can adversely affect the dimensional tolerances of FFF-printed parts. Therefore, it is crucial to take the relevant shrinkage/expansion into consideration when designing parts to be printed by FFF and subjected to annealing afterward.
02:01 PM unterhaus_: skunkworks, do you think you could mount a chuck on it?
02:03 PM CaptHindsight: I'd like to measure the flex and vibrations under cutting loads
02:04 PM CaptHindsight: the thermoplastic gear and the belt gear are more flexible than the typical metals used
02:06 PM CaptHindsight: I think it will work well for positioning, pick-n-place and similar
02:07 PM CaptHindsight: i expect some oscillations when cutting
02:30 PM JT-Cave: unterhaus_, no, I just add more compost to it
02:31 PM JT-Cave: having said that the raised beds are 3 years old... and I add some ash too
02:31 PM unterhaus_: I would like to add more compost to the existing raised bed, but I hate to disturb my oregano plant
02:37 PM JT-Cave: I still have two to clean out a prep but they are full of chick weed which my chickens love
02:40 PM unterhaus_: too bad dog poop isn't good for compost
02:45 PM unterhaus_: I'm so used to dimensioned 8' long lumber being right on 8' that I didn't measure. Of course it's 8' 1/2"
02:46 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus_: if I use algorithms developed in the 60's-70's can i still call it AI if they are run on a AI processor?
02:47 PM CaptHindsight: say a jetson board
02:48 PM CaptHindsight: asking for a friend
03:01 PM Bleepshop: CaptHindsight: Sure, just don't tell them that the A.I. stands for Archived Ingenuity. ;D
03:12 PM XXCoder: keep your privacy game https://cookieconsentspeed.run/
03:24 PM skunkworks: unterhaus_: yes - I have a bolt hole pattern that allows me to mount a small chuck I have...
05:16 PM unterhaus_: CaptHindsight some AI algorithms are really old, just give that '60s algorithm a small tweak and a snappy name and zuckerburg will give you a couple million
05:22 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus_: kewl, will do
05:25 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus_: for extra stupid points I'm going to offer an AI utility for LCNC
05:30 PM unterhaus_: 20 years ago that would have made you even more rich
05:35 PM * JT-Shop just pulled up some carrots from last year I assume unless some went to seed...
05:41 PM NoGodDamnIdea: how yall doing
05:41 PM XXCoder: ok-ish heh
05:42 PM NoGodDamnIdea: i feel fucking awful
05:45 PM NoGodDamnIdea: at least i have some wine left so i can drink myself to sleep
05:46 PM NoGodDamnIdea: i ordered the cnc shield _unreal_ :D
05:47 PM XXCoder: sick with something?
05:51 PM NoGodDamnIdea: its a sickness of the heart
05:51 PM NoGodDamnIdea: got dumped
05:52 PM XXCoder: ahh :(
05:55 PM NoGodDamnIdea: and its even one that i really liked
05:55 PM NoGodDamnIdea: this one really fucking hurts
06:11 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus_: just trying different physics engines
06:11 PM CaptHindsight: unterhaus_: I mean machine interference solver
06:16 PM * JT-Shop has 2 of 3 raised beds ready for planting next month
06:18 PM * Bleepshop has been digging through documentation and discovered that the Mesa 7196 board uses a Xilinx Spartan 6 FPGA.
06:20 PM Tom_L: Bleepshop, quite a few mesa boards do
07:39 PM Bleepshop: I've got what is probably a really stupid question. Which directions correspond to +/- ? Is + up and - down or vice versa ?
07:41 PM Bleepshop: Or is it now considered a matter of personal preference and therefore a reflection of your level of racism and gender identity ? ;D
07:43 PM Tom_L: right hand rule
07:43 PM Tom_L: on the Z axis - is down
07:44 PM Tom_L: https://bobcad.com/tech-tuesday-understanding-the-right-hand-rule-and-the-cartesian-coordinate-system/
07:45 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Only 'right hand rule' I know is for gyroscopes. I'm still leaning this and I had to pencil a set of axis arrows on the table so I can remember which way is X. LOL
07:45 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Thank you. :D
07:47 PM * Bleepshop is getting ready to clean all the parts of fthe cardboard on the table and try wiring up 1 axis at a time for testing.
07:50 PM Eric__: it's the same right hand rule. Airplanes, gyroscopes, physics, bolts
07:50 PM Bleepshop: Tom_L: Got some 2" vinyl letters and I'm planning on sticking them on 2 of the table edges along with +/- at the appropriate corners
07:56 PM ve7it: confusing depending on whether tool moves or work moves... z- is into work, z+ out of work (think router table vs milling machine)
07:56 PM JavaBean: not on the table surface i hope
08:13 PM Bleepshop: I'm resurrecting this from teh dead after nobody else dared to try. >:) https://imgur.com/a/6qgeGqY
08:24 PM XXCoder: well hope you succeed
08:29 PM Tom_L: gonna use mesa controls?
09:28 PM bjorkintosh: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUkX3iwr2iE
09:29 PM Eric__: Burpee says the average last frost for our area is 4/20 to 5/20
09:29 PM Eric__: Not sure how that's an average
09:29 PM XXCoder: bjorkintosh: yeah it can mill metal if you upgrade few stuff
09:30 PM XXCoder: barely
09:30 PM bjorkintosh: it is so stupidly cheap!
09:30 PM XXCoder: 120 usd something
09:30 PM XXCoder: unless it have gotten cheaper sinbce
09:30 PM bjorkintosh: I'm afraid it might break after a breath of air.
09:31 PM bjorkintosh: I'm almost done assembling my creality 3 pro.
09:32 PM XXCoder: cool :)
09:33 PM bjorkintosh: I still have absolutely no use for it. but uhh.
09:34 PM XXCoder: it moight be great for wood engraving
09:34 PM bjorkintosh: what, the cheapo milling machine?
09:34 PM XXCoder: yeah
09:34 PM XXCoder: it probably can also cut wood, though I woulnt hold breath on that, or even use that way as major use
09:35 PM bjorkintosh: it's really just a bunch of stepper motors and aluminium channel.
09:36 PM Tom_L: better start by cutting air then move up to butter
09:36 PM Eric__: it's too small for my current motion control project, but close
09:37 PM XXCoder: if youre thinking circuit board designing, meh because theres million cheap ones out there now
09:37 PM bjorkintosh: maybe it's good enough for pcb milling.
09:37 PM XXCoder: you can get 10 for $10
09:37 PM bjorkintosh: 10 for 10 of what?
09:37 PM XXCoder: pcbs
09:38 PM bjorkintosh: ah to be milled?
09:38 PM XXCoder: nah, complete, waiting for you to populate it
09:38 PM bjorkintosh: oh I see. through a service or something?
09:38 PM XXCoder: yeah theres TONS out there now
09:38 PM bjorkintosh: pcb printing is the new photo developing :-)
09:38 PM XXCoder: https://jlcpcb.com/
09:39 PM Tom_L: and you don't have to breathe the FR4 dust
09:39 PM XXCoder: https://www.pcbway.com/orderonline.aspx
09:39 PM XXCoder: so on
09:40 PM Tom_L: i forget what laen calls his.. the purple ones
09:40 PM bjorkintosh: yeah. but are art-is-anal organic craft pcbs?
09:40 PM Tom_L: i used goldphoenix for batches
09:41 PM bjorkintosh: You can only get that hand made, art-is-anal, organic craft pcb if you mill it yourself.
09:41 PM XXCoder: pcbshopper.com seems to be good site
09:41 PM Tom_L: http://tom-itx.no-ip.biz:81/~webpage/boards/new_batch/DSC_0001.JPG
09:42 PM XXCoder: ignore my last link
09:44 PM XXCoder: https://www.allpcb.com/ i picked 10x20mm and it seems cheap lol
09:45 PM bjorkintosh: I've never had to make a pcb.
09:46 PM XXCoder: me either
09:47 PM bjorkintosh: so now that I've got a fdm 3d printer I haven't even plugged in yet.
09:47 PM XXCoder: ask away if unsure what to do next
09:47 PM bjorkintosh: I think I should get an SLA to go with it. are the resins too noxious for a small space?
10:55 PM Eric__: I had some pcb's made for work once, it was really tempting to buy 10000 because they were $20 more
10:58 PM XXCoder: wow
10:58 PM XXCoder: not bad idea if you plan to sell some
10:58 PM bjorkintosh: if.
10:58 PM bjorkintosh: selling is hard.
11:00 PM roycroft: selling is not hard
11:00 PM roycroft: but it's not fun to me
11:13 PM roycroft: YAY!
11:13 PM roycroft: i am eligible at midnight tonight!
11:13 PM roycroft: less than three hours!
11:13 PM XXCoder: way to go!
11:13 PM * roycroft will stay up late and go to the registration website at exactly midnight
11:14 PM roycroft: actually i can probably register now
11:14 PM roycroft: since my appointment will not be until after midnight
11:16 PM roycroft: grr
11:17 PM roycroft: no appointments available right now
11:17 PM roycroft: but there will be more available on tuesday at the latest
11:17 PM roycroft: i'll be sure to carry my cell phone with me at all times so i can get the email from the health department as soon as it arrives
11:21 PM bjorkintosh: the public health sites are very crowded.
11:21 PM bjorkintosh: try CVS or walmart.
11:21 PM roycroft: we don't have a cvs
11:21 PM roycroft: and i will not go to wal*mart
11:21 PM bjorkintosh: they use linux :-)
11:22 PM roycroft: but our county health department are coordinating for two hospitals, a number of clinics, and they have two large drive-through facilities at the county fairgrounds and the university sports arena
11:22 PM roycroft: so they're not really crowded
11:23 PM roycroft: i go to their website and have access to all of those facilities for an appointment
